Confidence and Vulnerability at Work
HR has a reputation of being the principal’s office. no one really wants to go there because you’ll get in trouble with “The Man.” it’s disappointing and unrealistic. there are a thousand reasons we are looking out for employees basically all of the time, but more than that, the people that process those things are victims of the same company and culture that everyone else is. my hope is that we can all be proud of where we work, and that it wouldnt need to be a source of embarrassment or just something to get through so you can go back home. we spend so much of our lives at work, how can we enjoy it more?
i think, in order to do that, there’s aspects of vulnerability and honesty that have to be modeled from the company culture. and the way that HR is done can support that. i think it’s possible that there are ways of doing business that reinforce that culture. but it does take an openness from HR staff and leadership.
i’ve also noticed that working at a nonprofit human services agency, there is a general sense of “you dont know how hard my job is” and “you have a comfy desk job while i’m out here working my ass off”. i cannot deny that my job is less physically demanding. i have never had to run after a student darting into traffic or the woods. but, i do have other significant challenges and strategies to work with every day that aren’t as visible. my goal is not to be in a pissing contest with people i work with and for - my goal is to say, i see you and i hear you and i’m working for you. my job is for you.
what does honesty and vulnerability look like in the workplace? i know it’s being transparent as much as you can, it’s having real compassionate responses when someone is struggling or hurt, it’s saying “i dont know” when you dont know, it’s calling out when something is wrong, but also not being afraid to say when something confusing or apologizing when it didnt go well. it seems to me like it’s having the confidence to do those things.
i’m thinking a lot about confidence today. my boss is leaving in just three weeks, and all of us on our team are feeling pretty lost. she’s carried so much for us through so much transition. she’s been the rock, and i can’t imagine what it will be like without her. i know we’re going to make it, the business is going to keep operating and my job isn’t at stake. but it’s going to mean some really big changes, that are scary. she has done so much for us:
1. strategic insight and vision for the rest of the organization
2. final say/decision-making power on high stakes things, which is a lot of things
3. handles so many things that i dont know anything about.
4. go-between among senior leadership and our team for next steps
5. has the wisdom of 11 years of history at a growing company
6. holds space for us - i have been asked on multiple occasions during 1:1 meetings with her, “how are you, really - how are you doing.” that is immense.
7. encouragement and reinforcement, bragging about us to other departments and having full trust in us to make the right decisions. despite having the power and wisdom already stated, she believes in us and wants us to succeed.
i think these combined strengths have allowed me to both rise up and also slack off. that being said, i do have a difficult time letting myself off the hook for “slacking” - what does it mean, really? i struggle with self-regulation sometimes between staring at my phone for a few hours at work vs. being a perfectionistic stressball. but anyway, i am noticing that i’m not feeling very confident at work and i dont know if it’s a result of knowing that i can very quickly defer to the person who is right; or if it’s a difficulty i’m encountering in applying the HR studies i’ve gathered; or if it’s really just me and my own internal issues.
confidence and vulnerability are tightly wound, i think - but i personally have not yet found a way or a means to navigate the nuance well.

Refugee on page 244, is described as someone who is forced to leave his or her home, community, or country. I took this picture of my friend in her apartment, she is my big in my professional fraternity here on campus. She is a Bosnian refugee, when she was a child her family had to leave Bosnia to come to the United States, and find a home in Atlanta due to the war. My friend directly relates to this key concept of refugees because not only is this a very prevalent topic of conversation today in the news, but it also impacts real people. Moreover, because I have come to be a part of her life, I have learned about her struggles and the life that she has been able to create for herself, regardless of what her family experience when she was younger. I think it is vital to understand the backgrounds of various people, and I also find this very inspiring because I can relate to her in certain ways due to my childhood. If I were a sociocultural anthropologist, I would want to know more about the process of becoming a refugee and maybe more of the psychological impacts that this has on a person. I additionally think that it is important that people think about the circumstances of situations such as these, instead of just looking at the physical person.
Migration described in page 240 of the Miller textbook is described as "movement from one place to another." Many Bosnian refugees have gone through international migration, which is the movement across country boundaries. The book goes on to discuss the causes of migration are directly linked to basic aspects of life and survival such as providing for food and shelter. In relation to the picture that I have provided of my friend, I think that since she migrated to this country, these are other aspects that are vital to think about. Even though, she might not have directly worried about specific aspects of this since she was a child, her parents most certainly did have to figure out how to survive in this new place. Recently my other friend, who is in a human services class, and I have been discussing migration and the impacts that it has on many families, and in turn how this impacts one's inner and outer circles. She described this as the Bronfenbrenner ecological system, and I would really like to learn more about this. This system describes how there are many components or circles such as the inner, middle and outer circle that impact a person. For example, their inner circle are their immediate family, while their outer circle is mass media. But, although all of these circles are independent, they also intertwine to create a person, and this impacts the way in which they interact with others. If I were a sociocultural anthropologist I would take the initiative to investigate this, and maybe apply it to specific people so that I am able to understand how specific events like migration shape a person.
