Bit of an opinionated rant but:
Idk why everyone is so upset over the Zelda timeline and the Zelda continuity or whatever. I like the huge spaghetti mess that is Zelda lore. I like that the developers don’t give a fuck about consistency. I’m glad it gives them the freedom to make whatever the fuck in their games.
Is it perfect? No. Could it be better? Of course!
But isn’t half the fun of being a Zelda theorist, playing with the puzzle pieces yourself? For me personally, it doesn’t matter if Nintendo never had this grand master plan of the Zelda lore. It means everyone can come to their own conclusions on the origin of the heroes or the magic or the different groups of people. And that’s kinda by design.

In Defense of Tears of the Kingdom's Story
Hi, I just wanted to put this out because while there is a lot of valid criticisms about the story (even if I disagree with most of them personally), I've seen a bunch of people act like it isn't a sequel to BotW at all or barely feels connected. There are also other aspects that I want to talk about in here as well, but that's the big one I want to address because too many people seem to have missed the plethora of BotW references. If you still dislike the story after this though, that's totally fine, opinions are opinions. Anyways, spoilers of course.
Ok here's the elephant in the room, yes, Tears of the Kingdom is DEFINITELY a sequel to Breath of the Wild. The intro segment makes this very clear that Breath of the Wild had to have happened in order for this game to happen. Zelda talks about how after the Calamity, the castle went into neglect, which over time caused gloom to appear all over Hyrule. The Calamity caused Rauru's seal on Ganondorf to become extremely weakened only to finally fail when Link and Zelda see Rauru's hand and Ganondorf.
Not to mention the people remembering Link, yeah a lot of people forgot who Link was, but like do you think those people have any braincells? Bolson is tricky but to be fair, to him Link is just a customer. As for Link not being recognized by those that Zelda met in person, I don't think they'd care about a knight of the princess more than the princess who suffered for 100 years especially since he's always behind her. This even works for those who had side quests considering that most of the ones in BotW were really just small things. But the people who SHOULD remember Link DO remember him and even more remember him as well.
Also the Divine Beasts are mentioned several times, we just don't know where they went... However we can infer that the Sheikah have the ability to snap them in and out of existence thanks to Maz Koshia's arena in BotW's DLC. I highly doubt they'd want those things around anymore especially since they started breaking down in the True Ending of BotW. As for Guardians, they've been scrapped and used for stuff like Towers. The Shrines and Towers destroyed by Hudson's company. There are also things like Mipha Court, Kohga and the Character Profiles that prove BotW happened.
Now onto the timeline placement. At the end of one of the three timelines post-dragonbreak, all of the events from BotW and TotK, INCLUDING the Zonai coming down and the Imprisoning War, take place after the original Hyrule fell or got destroyed by the dragonbreak. Society starts to reform with all the races that are in BotW/TotK, eventually the Zonai come down and live peacefully with everyone, something happens to most of the Zonai, possibly warring with Ganondorf already, Rauru and Sonia then come together and form the new Hyrule Kingdom. They call it Hyrule and not New Hyrule because that sounds dumb probably. Then the events of the Dragon Tears happen, then like 100k years pass where the intro of Tears of the Kingdom happens, which is around 4-6 years after the end of Breath of the Wild. The events of Tears of the Kingdom happen and then the ending, which I will explain next.
The ending of Tears of the Kingdom is NOT a Deus Ex Machina, it is explained entirely in game. I highly doubt the Zonai ever tried to do an amplified Recall on a draconified person. So basically, according to the 6th memory/4th Dragon Tear, other stone users/Sages can amplify a stone's power even more by lending their power. Sonia and Rauru lent Link their power to boost his Recall to bring Zelda back, restore Link's body back to normal and to return Rauru's arm to him.
Update 1: Okay so people are saying this is an alternate timeline created by Zelda going back in time. This literally would contradict so much its insane how anyone could think of this incompetent idea. Zelda going back in time was FATE. She was always destined to go back in time in an endless cycle. There is no start, Zelda being the Sage of Time means she is out of time's restrictions. The murals that were blocked off at the beginning of the game prove this by showing Zelda becoming a dragon. The Light Dragon was always there in BotW above the sky barrier, which we've seen the dragons go through in that game.
Anyways I'll add more to this post later if I can think of anything else I want to address.

I was playing Hyrule Warriors and link & young link's brotherhood means the world to me so have some links growing closer throughout the war.
Link and the Princess had never quite seen eye to eye when it came to the battlefield. Sure, Princess Zelda was an intelligent and prolific fighter, but she was a politician first, a general second, and on days like these, Link wondered if she was even a person third.
"I will not be fighting alongside a seven-year-old," Link hissed, jabbing a finger dangerously close to her chest plate.
The fact that Link was talking to a superior officer like that would be unimaginable in any other situation, but right now Link wasn't sure Zelda even deserved the title. Impa stepped forward and grabbed his shoulder; Link expected her to shove him back away from her Princess, bark some overprotective bullshit while hammering down the importance of the chain of command, but this time Sheikah was quiet.
"I agree with the captain, your Majesty," she said, voice respectful but stern.
"What?" Zelda looked like Impa had just confessed to drowning a baby-- Link wasn't sure the woman had ever disagreed with her before. "Impa-- the Sheikah begin training at 13--"
"Glamour training, a child wouldn't even begin to wield a weapon against another until 14. And this child is far, far below that."
Zelda bristled. "We are fighting on all fronts, Impa, we are stretched far too thin to look this gift horse in the mouth--"
"I'm not seven," the child in mention said, ending his now hour-long sullen silence, arms crossed tight across his chest. He'd popped out of one of Lana's time gates just an hour or so ago, and it had been chaos since then. The three adults' heads whipped around; in all of Link's frothing, he'd forgotten the squirt was even here.
"That's so nice to know," He said, trying to tamper in the anger rolling around in his chest, "I can rest easy knowing I'm watching an eight-year-old get stabbed instead!"
The kid’s face twisted and he stood, shoving past Link and the two women and out of the tent.
"Wait, Link!" Zelda called, darting out after him, and Impa sighed.
"Take five," she said to Link, watching her ward leave. "And find somewhere to calm down. I don't need the men catching your attitude."
Link managed to growl out a 'yes, sir', and turned over his shoulder as he reached the tent flap.
"I mean it, Impa. I don't care how much of the Spirit of The Hero the kid has," Link said, voice unwavering and thick, "or how many damn adventures he's been on. I don't he if he's fucking Farore incarnate-- I am not fighting beside a child."
He was fighting beside a fucking child. Link wished he had fought more, had bit and clawed and screamed against taking the kid with them, but they hadn't had the time to argue. Lana had caught wind of monsters marching from the north with that terrifyingly wonderful Time-Space magic of hers, right near the growing Rauru Settlement where the blacksmithing guild sat, providing most of the Hyrulian Royal Army with its weaponry. So, instead of being back at base where he was safe, the younger Link (fuck, that was going to get confusing fast, wasn't it? They needed to get the squirt a name) was running with them to the collection of keeps recently established in Rauru's territory. Because in the Princess' eyes, an armory came before a child. Always the pragmatic politician.
"I need you to keep him with you and your platoon, captain." Impa had told Link. She looked him in the eyes with near painful honesty. "I need someone capable to keep an eye on him, keep him safe. I know you can do that. I don't like this any more than you do, but it's better than nothing."
"Yes, sir." Link told her. He agreed-- of all the military leadership here, he was the most qualified, other than Impa herself, to protect a ward, and Link's platoon was formidable, well trained. They could handle a battle without his immediate guidance. It should have been simple enough after that, except that the younger Link wouldn't stay in one damn place.
Link tore through the battlefield, racking his eyes through the carnage for the squirt. The younger Link was a good enough fighter, all things considered, movements slow but measured. He obviously had experience, and he wielded his sword with confidence. Link had seen many large swords in his life-- hells, the blade of Impa's Sheikah naginata's was as long as her arm-- but the squirt's blade was longer than the kid was tall and thicker than his thigh. It was simple enough for a two-handed weapon, well-crafted with blue hilt guards and a gold stamp of some Goron blacksmith. Link didn't even know the Gorons crafted blades. As massive as the sword was, the younger Link held it with ease, obviously well balanced in his hands. But apparently, his satisfactory grip on his sword hilt was enough to convince the kid that he didn't need supervision, and now Link was searching with growing panic through the crowd for a familiar flash of green and yellow.
He kicked a lizalfo corpse off of the Master Sword, immediately slicing diagonally at the second monster that lunged for him, leaving behind a spill of guts and gushing blue blood. The lizalfos were thinning at the northernmost keep, but he still couldn't find the damn kid-- no wait, there! Just a few hundred meters away was a splash of forest green amongst the swarming lizalfos. The kid.
He was doing his best, that much was clear, but when he'd wandered from Link's sightline he'd found himself in the way of an elite summoner. The waves of lizalfos would be a struggle for a trained platoon, let alone a single child. Link's heart jumped to his throat and he bolted. His platoon could handle the keep without him.
He ran, refusing to acknowledge the burning in his thighs and gut, but deep down he knew there was no way he could make it in time to get Link to safety.
There was an ear-splitting scream and Link couldn't help but freeze. He couldn't see Link in the sea of lizalfos any longer. Horror flooded his system. He let a child die, he let a child die, he--
Something-- someone-- stood. They towered over the swarm of lizalfos, tall and broad and muscular, armored and unnaturally pale. Arching tattoos covered their forehead and under their eyes, and they wielded a blade unlike anything Link had ever seen before. Their swings were vicious, violent, yet controlled, striking with an anger Link had never seen on the battlefield before, even from Impa after Zelda disappeared. In seconds the dozens of lizalfos were just a stinking pile of cooling flesh and blue blood, not a single twitching monster left. The man hadn't even broken a sweat. He raised a hand to his face and the world twisted for a moment, ripping backward and to the side, and then the man was gone and the younger Link was there, holding a mask in his hands. He was pale, shaking, but all together unhurt. When he turned to look at Link his lips turned up in the smallest of smirks.
Link's grip on the Master Sword went lax.
"What the fuck was that?"
---
Link became familiar with the Fierce Deity as the war progressed. The younger Link-- now nicknamed Mask after Lana called him the 'little mask boy' (which Mask despised) one to many times-- had started out using the Deity only when the fighting was at its most dire, but under Zelda's praise, the Deity was becoming a more and more common sight on the battlefield. It worried Link. The Diety was a formidable fighter, to the point of being terrifying, fighting with a pure viciousness the likes of which Link had never seen. He could take out platoons of monsters in seconds, rip through crowds of moblins and bokoblins like wet tissue paper, and never left survivors. He was the weapon that the Hyrulian Army had desperately needed. But after removing the mask, Mask was shaky and pale, exhausted to the point of being unable to swing his biggoron sword, and it left him sullen and quiet for the rest of the day, sleep fitful and unrestful. Impa had stuck the kid in Link's tent, which meant Link had a front-row view of the nightmares that only seemed to come after the mask was used. Whatever kind of magic that mask was, it was hurting Mask. That much was clear, and no one else seemed to notice.
"I think you should leave the mask behind today," Link said, trying to keep his voice light and even. Mask looked up from where he was helping to pack up the tent. They were on the move, deeper into Gerudo territory, and Lana promised Cia would be there. Link was pretending that knowledge didn't nauseate him.
"What do you mean?"
"We're going to be marching for a while, and you're going to need all your strength. You're always tired after--"
"I'm not a baby, I can handle a little walking."
"I know, I just mean that... Mask, I don't like what the Fierce Deity does to you."
Mask froze, fingers digging into the bedroll he was holding.
"I didn't ask for your opinion."
"I'm serious, Mask. It messes you up, I know you know it does."
"What I do with my items is none of your business!"
"Mask--"
"Stop it! That's not my name! You don't know anything, captain, you don't know jack shit about me or--"
"Language!"
"Fuck you!"
Mask stormed out of the tent, throwing the bedroll in Link's arms, and the storm on his face would have been terrifying if he wasn't ten. Instead, it just sent a pool of guilt in Link's gut.
Mask didn't talk to him as they marched to Lana's latest sighting of Cia. Link wanted the kid there, wanted to poke fun until he could squeeze out one of Mask's rare smiles, anything to get his mind off of Cia. But Mask was walking with Zelda in stony silence. Had Link been right to tell Mask how to fight? If someone told him how to handle himself or his men on the battlefield he'd be pissed too. But Link's fire rod or Master Sword wasn't actively harming him.
He didn't have much time to dwell on it. Lana was right about the number of enemies, just as she always was with her strange magic that transcended Time and Space. Link tried to keep close to Mask during the fight, but the kid was avoiding him and Link had a job to do, men to lead. And maybe if he kept busy enough, moved fast enough, he could avoid her.
The keep he and his men were taking suddenly cleared, the monsters scrambling apart. The oppressive pressure of Dark magic filled the air, greasy and wrong. Link called for his men to move behind him. He knew what that deeply wrong pressure meant, and the key to getting his men out of here alive was to keep her eyes only on him.
She stood elegantly as always, face flushed with the color of battle but not a silver strand of hair out of place, fingers wrapped gracefully around her staff. Seeing Lana's features on her face felt deeply, deeply wrong
"I've been looking for you," Cia said. "My other half thinks she's so clever, using magic to peer behind enemy lines. But I knew you'd come. You hero types are so predictable.”
Link knew he should fight. He knew he should stand his ground and cut her damn head off. He wanted to run. Nayru's love, he wanted to run. He charged, Master Sword a constant comfort in his hand, and Cia caught the blow with her magic with insulting ease. Link lashed out again, catching an exposed side, and Cia grunted as she forced it back with a blast of darkness.
Link didn't hear Mask coming, didn't fucking notice him, too focused on the Time Guardian in front of him, not until eighty pounds of scrawny ten-year-old boy slammed into her, biggoron sword breaking through her magic barrier. Cia screamed, a vicious, angry sound, and knocked him across the face with her staff, the sharp crystals cutting into the kid's face and throwing him back with a burst of Dark magic. Mask tumbled back, slamming into the keep's stone wall, and Link shouted his name. He ran to the boy, signaling his platoon for a full retreat; fuck the witch, Mask was more important.
What would Zelda say, prioritizing one soldier over the head of the opposing forces?
It didn't matter. Mask was all that mattered. He scooped up the tiny body in his arms, bolting out of the crumbling keep to where he knew Impa was stationed. Fuck this. Fuck it.
Medical tents always went up first after a battle, and with a few gentle waves of Lana's magic over Mask's bleeding scalp, the kid was awake by the time the rest of the injured had been set up. Link was supposed to be debriefing with the generals right now and facing the consequences of abandoning the battlefield. He was by Mask's cot instead.
"You've got a nasty concussion," he told Mask when the kid finally woke up. Lana's magic was effective, but always annoyingly sedating. "Careful when sitting up, the world might be a little wobbly for a bit."
"You're okay," Mask croaked. He smiled, a real, proper smile, and Link insides clenched and twisted.
"Yeah, thanks to you. That was very, very stupid. Cia is above your pay grade, kiddo."
"Mhm."
"I mean it. I can go out there without you, okay squirt?"
"Not a squirt," Mask yawned, and snuggled up on his side. It would take a good few hours for the magic to leave his system. "Didn't... wanna use the mask... make you mad. Thought I could do it by myself."
"You don't have to do anything by yourself, Link." Link said. The cuts on Mask's face were painful to look at. Lana said they would scar. "I'm with you for a reason."
Mask nodded, and then was asleep again.
---
Link was punished with babysitting duty and removed from the front lines until further notice. Link didn't think it was much of a punishment. Mask was still sluggish from his concussion; red potion was scarce, and Lana's magic was reserved for war first and healing second. So, the kid was stuck on bed rest and Link was stuck watching over him, which he didn't mind at all, frankly. The kid was funny when he was actually comfortable enough to be, and his smiles, while rare, were blinding. When they were alone it was like a whole other child came to light. Mask would curl up against his side or lay his head in Link's lap, all signs of his age that he would never show to anyone else.
"Where'd the yellow one come from?" Link asked Mask, mouth full of hardtack. He'd given his bread to the kid, sticking to tack with his boiled meat and vegetable mash and letting Mask savor the stale but still sweet bread crust that made up the rest of their food rations instead. Mask would never accept the food if he knew Link was giving his own, but the kid was growing and needed the extra nutrients, so Link always found a way to make sure the kid was eating half of Link's own military rations. He could go without the food. Mask couldn't. "The yellow fox mask."
Mask pulled the mask from his belt. "It's not a fox, it's a Keaton. They're trickster spirits, they like riddles."
"I've never heard of one before."
"That's 'cus they only come from Termina."
Link cocked his head. "Never heard of that before. Is it near Holodrum?"
Mask shook his head. "Nah, don't know where it is, really."
"Is that where you're from?"
Mask shook his head again but didn't supply a hometown. "Here, I have more!" He dug under his cot for his traveling pack and began digging inside. There was no way he could fit another mask in there; must be an expansion spell. The younger Link kept digging through the bag, tongue stuck out in adorable concentration.
"I want one you'll like... here!" He pulled out a round black-blue mask with the mark of an explosive on it. It reeked of gunpowder. "When you put it on you can cause an explosion! It, uh, isn't the safest, but it can be useful when you're outta bombs!" He went back to his bag.
"This is the bunny mask, it can make you run super fast!"
"This one, this is the Mask of Truth, it tells you secrets!"
"Oh! You speak to fairies, you'll love this one!" He pulled out a mask in the shape of a rather horrifying face with floating hair. Its resemblance to a Great Fairy was uncanny and the smell of fairy magic was beautiful and overwhelming. "A Great Fairy gave it to me."
"It's beautiful," Link breathed, and Mask blushed under the praise.
"They're my prized possessions. You can't tell anyone, okay? I don't want anyone to steal them."
Mask's eyes were so earnest that it hurt. Link mimed a zipper over his lips.
"Promise."
---
The plan had gone to shit. Link felt pretty awful about that in all honesty-- it had been his plan after all. They should have listened to Impa when she critiqued it, but she and the Princess were fighting so Link's plan was guaranteed to come on top. It seemed a shallow way to treat lives, but that was the Princess for you.
Volga rolled his eyes as Link picked himself off the keep floor. What was left of his platoon had fallen back for reinforcements; he told them he would hold Volga back until they arrived, but it was starting to seem like he had overestimated his abilities and underestimated the dragon knight. The knight let out an amused breath through his nose, the air shimmering with heat.
"I expected better from the Goddesses' chosen hero," He drawled. "But then, when have the Goddesses ever proved to be worth anything? Cia will be disappointed that she wasn't there to see your demise."
"Tell her I'm terribly sorry," Link spat. It came out bloody. "Maybe she can come to the funeral."
Volga spun his spear and brought it down hard, Link only just catching it with his blade. Volga pushed harder and Link's arms trembled. He couldn't feel his right arm anymore. That was probably a bad thing, wasn't it?
He slammed his weight against Volga, teeth grit, and the knight easily batted him aside. Well, that was just insulting. A second swing of the spear sent the Master Sword spinning out of his hand, and Volga kicked him onto his back. Link wheezed, trying to stand, but Volga pressed his knee down onto his chest. Link's broken ribs creaked, the open wound gushing a new round of blood at Volga's weight.
"I want to feel you die, hero," Volga said, leaning close. "I want to smell it."
"That's... a weird kink..." Link wheezed, "haven't ... heard that one before."
Volga grabbed hold of his neck with one hand and the side of his head with the other. Volga's skin rippled from flesh to scales, bones snapping into something new. The grip from the dragon arms was painfully strong, the muscles bulging compared to Volga's normal arms. He dug his claws into Link's scalp, drawing blood, and then the heat began.
Link told himself he wouldn't scream, wouldn't give Volga that satisfaction, but as the flames licked his face, catching in his hair, rippling across his flesh, the smell of cooking meat and burning hair was too overwhelming. His vision wavered, pain and heat turning the air above him into shimmering water.
He was going to die, Link realized with surprising clarity. He was just glad Mask wasn't here to see it.
Almost as soon as he thought it, Volga was ripped off of him. White hair, armor, tattoos-- Link watched with only dim awareness as the Fierce Deity flung Volga into the keep wall with so much strength that the stone gave way. The Deity stalked towards him and slammed him onto the ground, dropping on top of him in a rather ironic mirror of Volga's earlier stance over Link. The Deity ripped off Volga's helmet and grabbed hold of the dragon knight's face with such strength that Link swore he heard the dragon's bones creak. The Deity raised his head and brought it down hard on the stone.
Crunch.
Again.
Crunch.
Again, and again, and again, over and over until Volga didn't even have a face anymore, just a bloody, mushy pulp that might have once been a head. The Deity didn't stop. Link tried to reach a hand, tried to call Mask's name, but he couldn't seem to make his body work.
His eyesight no longer shimmered, now just dim and getting dimmer. He heard shouting, footsteps, what might be his name, the familiar cool of Lana's magic, small hands, sobbing-- then nothing.
---
When Link woke the first time the pain put him back under almost immediately. The second time he heard voices. A hand lifted his head; he tasted lukewarm water and tried to swallow before sinking back to sleep. The third time he felt fuzzy and warm with a pain numbing potion and was vaguely aware of an uncomfortable pressure on his chest. He forced his eyes open. He was Impa's tent-- so he must have been injured enough to be moved out of the medic tent. That had never happened to him before. First time for everything, he guessed.
He looked down at his chest; it was Mask, curled up almost entirely on top of him, rather like a cat. He tried to raise an arm to run a hand through the boy's hair but hissed at the movement. Even through the potion's magic, his arm, neck, and face screamed in protest at any movement. Mask bolted up.
"Link!" He shouted, voice full of desperate energy as if he hadn't just been asleep, and before Link could ask him to lower his voice the boy burst into tears.
"Hey, hey hey hey..." Link croaked, "no tears..."
"You almost died, you fucker," Mask hissed, but the runny nose wasn't helping him sound scary. "If Lana hadn't been nearby to stabilize you, you would have!"
"I'm sorry."
Mask rubbed his eyes furiously. "You don't get to die."
"This is war, Link, I can't promise that."
"No! No, you don't get to die! No more dying, no more leaving! You're my brother, I can't lose you!"
Link pulled him close, even with his body fighting the movement. Mask continued to sob, clinging to him like a lifeline. They sat like that until Mask wore himself out, dipping back into sleep again.
Brother, Link thought as he fought his own exhaustion, the pain finally pulling him back down under. He called me brother.

My opinions on the relationship between Link and Zelda in BotW, and why I personally detest romantic BotW Zelink:
A strong title, I am aware. I'm aware of the risk this runs of causing a right shitstorm lol.
I'd like to preface this essay with the disclaimer that all of the following are merely my interpretations. It is completely fine if you disagree with me.
My views are not any more or less valid than anyone else's, and do not invalidate conflicting opinions.
Nevertheless, if you are an avid BotW Zelink shipper who does not wish to hear a great deal of criticism about this pairing, then I suggest you do not read this post.
If, however, you are curious to hear my opinions, then I merely request that you keep an open mind, and be respectful of everyone else's interpretation. I will admit that these interpretations are integral to my characterisations within my fanfic series.
OK, so. Firstly. I do not think that anyone can reasonably argue with the fact that Zelda treats Link AWFULLY in the earlier memories. Indeed, BotW makes a rather large point of showing just some of the ways Zelda mistreats Link.
For context, Link is appointed as Zelda's Royal Guard by her father, the King. It is, therefore, his sworn duty to protect her, and he doesn't really have any say in the matter. But I believe that he would be proud to serve his kingdom in this capacity.
Zelda, however, takes great offence to his presence. She takes out her frustration by constantly belittling and berating Link, (knowing that she will not face repercussions for her mistreatment due to their respective positions) and repeatedly trying to escape his escort, despite the fact that he is there for her safety, and despite his best efforts to be as unobtrusive as possible to her.
And then, when Link finds her, because he is devoted to his duty of protecting her, she berates him again.
For merely doing his job.
What Zelda is showing here is that she holds utter contempt for Link and his duty, and actively tries to make his job, and his life, miserable. I cannot imagine the stress Zelda's constant absconding would have on Link, given that if he fails his duty to keep her safe, it's his arse on the line. Plus the entirety of Hyrule's arse too, given Zelda's destiny that she needs to perform.
We know from Zelda's diary that Link, despite his blank facade, IS hurt by her blatantly hurtful actions, as is completely natural and normal in his circumstances.
Now, to be completely fair, I believe that Link is highly sympathetic to Zelda. He understands why she mistreats him, especially since Urbosa spells it out in her cutscene. He understands that Zelda is in an unenviable position, and that she is taking out her frustration and anger for not being able to live up to her destiny on him.
However, despite this understanding and sympathy, that does not mean that the hurt Zelda has caused him vanishes.
He has an explanation for her behaviour. But it is NOT an excuse.
So anyway. Zelda's behaviour continues until the Gerudo desert. Remember that Zelda fled from Link's protection (again) to go to the Gerudo Town, where Link is not allowed to set foot as a male. After he tracks her down to Vah Naboris (in the dead of night - dude must have been walking all day across a desert to reach her), Zelda's first reaction when she sees him is scorn. I can't imagine how hurtful that must be.
Anyway, the next morning, Zelda ditches him YET AGAIN, making her way across the desert alone.
When she is jumped by Yiga Assassins. Who come within moments of killing (or worse, capturing) her, until Link comes flying out of nowhere to save her.
(On a little side note, some people think this is where Zelda fell in love with him. And really, at this point, Zelda knows nothing about him, since she'd never before given him the time of day. She, at best, has a crush on the concept of a Saviour)
Now, fair play to Zelda in that after this pivotal moment, she changes her attitude and behaviour towards Link, even admitting to her previous faults in her diary. This shows a surprising maturity that contrasts her previous childishness.
However, again, this does not make all of the hurt she caused him just vanish.
Now, over the next months, I believe that Zelda and Link became very close friends. Especially given that Zelda was so starved for relationships. And they come to know each other very well, especially with Zelda sympathising with Link's lack of choice in his own destiny, similar to herself.
However, well... even after this point, Zelda still mistreats Link.
I'm referring primarily to the Frog Cutscene.
Now, to preface this, in this instance, I do not believe that Zelda is behaving maliciously to Link intentionally. I believe that she is trying to tease him.
However, her behaviour is not ideal.
In this cutscene, Link shows extreme discomfort with Zelda's insistence that he eat the live frog. This is especially significant, given his usual stoicness. The fact that Zelda causes this reaction means that he feels extremely strongly about this issue.
However, Zelda keeps insisting and pushing him, effectively taking her teasing too far, and causing Link more discomfort. Because who would want to eat a frog? (No offence to French people).
Now, coming from my own experience of having friends take teasing too far with me, and having unfortunately done the same with other people, I can say with absolute certainty that Zelda's behaviour here is not ok. Especially given Link's very apparent discomfort here.
However, there is also another aspect here that I've never seen anyone else mention.
Namely that, despite Zelda's wishes of friendship, she holds authority over Link, as Princess of the Kingdom.
As a Knight, he is duty bound to follow Zelda's orders and instructions. And one could argue that Zelda's insistence could be viewed in the context of her 'ordering' Link to eat the frog. Of course, I do not believe that this is her intention, but, from Link's perspective, there is definitely cause for reasonable doubt.
Which forces Link into the exceedingly awkward decision of having to refuse what MIGHT be an order from the Princess.
And, especially framed in the context of Zelda's previous immature, unfair behaviour towards him, he doesn't know if his refusal might cause Zelda to get all stroppy with him. Let alone other, more significant consequences that might arise from disobeying his superior.
And I feel sorry for Zelda here, seeing that she wants to view Link as a friend (or potentially more), however she must know that they are both bound by their respective positions at this point. Her behaviour is... inappropriate, and as sorry as I feel for her, that does not change the fact that she's dumping Link in an extraordinarily awkward position, and being very unfair to him.
Because, if Link does take issue with her behaviour, what can he do to stop it? Zelda is the princess, and he has no right to tell her what she can and cannot do.
Now, that is effectively the crux of my argument, however I will also note that I interpret Link to be extremely depressed in BotW, due to how much he has lost, and how he is grieving the deaths of well... everyone he's ever known, many of whom he cannot even remember. He's grieving the death of an entire civilisation, as well as people extremely close to him.
In such circumstances, it would be natural for him to resent the fact that Zelda did not awaken her power sooner, and resent Zelda's decision to have him resurrected, even in spite of him understanding the necessity of it.
Basically, whilst I interpret Link and Zelda to be very close, I am very strongly against the idea that Link would form romantic feelings for her, due to his formative impressions of her being filled with mistreatment and abuse. Whilst I do not doubt that he forgives her, the fact remains that first impressions are important. And Link's first, second, third... (and so on) impressions of Zelda are... unfavourable.
If this happened to me, then, perhaps with a healthy dose of sympathy and understanding, I could come to forgive the one who has mistreated me so extensively, as I believe Link does for Zelda.
However, I do not think that I could ever fall in love with them.
And, whilst this was not meant to involve my interpretations about Miphlink, I will say that during the whole time Zelda was abusing and disrespecting Link, Mipha was nothing but kind, accepting, caring and devoted towards him.
As such, if the sequel explicitly puts Link and Zelda into a romantic relationship, or even just strongly implies it, I will be...
Honestly, I'll be furious. Because this would run so completely contradictory to all of my interpretations about BotW and the characters.
I pray that they write with subtlety and leave reasonable room for interpretation.
Once again, these are only my interpretations. If you wish to add your own, then feel free. I'm all for having a reasonable, respectful and informed debate on the matter. However, please remain respectful of other opinions, whatever your interpretation is.

Damien The Littlest Brother
Or: Stuff Damian does with his siblings.
Dick
Dick in some ways was another form of idolization for Damian. Damian was so very young when they first met, younger still when Ra's and the league sunk their teeth into his heart and tried their best to tear it to shreds. Dick's role, part sibling part guardian, was the first major form of stability Damian had. Little Damian had been born with the mythos of The Bat hanging overhead, and the hope of measuring up to first his grandfather's and then his father's standards had nearly broken him.
Like a lot of children Damian didn't necessarily understand or appreciate what Dick was trying to do for him until he was older. But just like other children Damian clung to the emotional support and care Dick gave him, the care he had so often been deprived of.
Damian wasn't necessarily there for the events that shaped Dick and the rest of their family, but he is growing up in the aftereffects of it. Dick chose to give Damian the love he deserved, Dick chose not to punish a child for the situation he was born into. But Dick isn't perfect. He loses his temper, he gets frustrated, he gets things wrong, he makes mistakes, he bleeds. Dick, at least initially, was real and human in a way Bruce wasn't to a little boy who already had his future decided for him.
While he may not admit it, Damian looks up to Dick because in a lot of ways Dick is a better person than most. Dick is a good man, a better man than Bruce in some ways. He shows Damian what a hero actually is, and that the concept of being a hero isn't tied to the suit. Dick shows Damian that he can and is a good person, that he can make those decisions for himself and that his own emotional needs are not anything to be ashamed of. Damian is a boy first, not a weapon.
So Damian leans into his affection. There are shared naps after patrol, and days out getting ice cream or going to the zoo. Damian wakes a tired Dick up with a pillow to the face, and pillow fights and laughter ensues. Dick comes along to the school showcases, where an embarrassed Damian has pictures and paintings of their family up for all to see. He never once mocks Damian's desires, instead listening with seriousness to every moment of Damian's vulnerability.
That's what sticks with Damian the most. That Dick wholeheartedly believes Damian is a good person, that Damian can be good and kind and soft. He sees Damian fumble with his cool demeanor, growing shy and embarrassed when chatting with students his own age. Damian knows the names of most of his classmates, takes down random details that shouldn't be important to a stranger "We're NOT friends Grayson," but Damian talks to the youngest students about animals, and how to properly hold puppies. Damian has lists of underfunded animal shelters and regularly sends them to Bruce and Tim when preparations for the Wayne Foundation charity events come up. Damian knows most of the officers in Bludhaven since he occasionally stops by with something for Dick, a late lunch or hot drink or Dick's spare clothes in case he needs out of his police uniform. After many coos, head pats and cheek pinches, Damian is occasionally "babysat" by some of them while Dick is out on patrol of the police variety. He does not realize how much he has charmed Dick's co-workers, talking about his pets or his brothers.
Dick is the kind of hero, the kind of person, Damian was told wasn't real. That heroes were childish nonsense, that mercy and love were weak. The concept that someone could love him, that he was deserving of love instead of being forced to earn it, was foreign. But Dick Grayson was all of that. So Damian puts up less and less of a fight over the silly pictures they take together. Dick buys books about animals, and Damian grudgingly wears the cute stupid animal ear headbands Dick buys him. While part of Damian knows he won't be, the part that viciously beats "heroes" and "love" and "ice cream" back with a vengeance, another part of Damian, a very small fragile part, thinks that maybe if he grew up becoming like Dick Grayson the Person (TM) it wouldn't be so bad. "Awww thanks Dami!"
Jason:
Next to Tim, the Cain Instincts are strongest with Jason. Jason is constantly ruffling his hair, calling him names, and sitting on him. Jason does not give a single iota of a damn for any sort of authority except Alfred. Jason is not afraid of Damian.
So when Damian latches onto Jason's neck ready to strangle him, he laughs like it's the best thing he's ever seen, and a wrestling match ensues. They bond over it, over the goading and the competition.
They bond over books too, over stories and musicals and words Damian shouldn't care about but he does. Damian says he's too old for fairy tales even though he never had them to begin with, never had stories told when tucked into bed unless it was for a harsh life lesson. And yet Damian will find books as gifts for Jason, and Jason will read them aloud after Damian annoys him by pressing his feet into Jason's side. He swears up and down that the exaggerated voices and accented narration from Jason are done purely to annoy him. Damian constantly interrupts him, always asking questions and Jason tells him to shut up and be patient, "learn to listen demon brat."
They watch Disney and Ghibli, Laika and Illumination, and after a very enlightening conversation with one Tim Drake, Jason introduces Damian to theater. From Antigone to Romeo and Juliet, from West Side Story to Hadestown to Heathers the Musical. Bruce has walked in on them recreating various iconic sword fights too many times to count, quoting lines while dressed in blanket robes and crowns made of craft feathers and stick on jewels. Alfred thorough enjoys their riveting performances.
Like a lion teaching his cubs through play, Jason teaches him that he's never too mature for anything and screw anyone else who doesn't like it. Jason teaches him fun in a way Damian never allowed himself to have before, to look past his mission, and do things for enjoyment. He teaches Damian defiance and rebellion, two very important things for him to learn even if it's only interrupting rude rich people and disagreeing with his father over whether he needs to attend another gala.
Damian and Jason have a strange relationship, and initially aren't quite sure how to act around one another. Such large parts of their identity and experiences were formed by an indirect overlapping influence. Jason's death and the effect it had on the family and how they treat Damian, Jason's time with the league and the lazarus pit. But at the same time they understand each other in a way some of their other siblings don't. The strength and struggle in establishing their independence and identity means that their grudging respect turns into fondness with time.
Tim:
It appears that Cain Instincts don't particularly care if one is related or not, given the sheer amount of times Tim and Damian are at each other's throats initially. But with time they settle and grow more comfortable with each other, the words turn from anger to a grumbly sort of discontent, like irritated puppy's more than anything.
They bond over pride. They bond over failure. The two aren't that different really. They've seen each other at their worst. Missions with too many close calls, where the knife wounds cut too close and the bullets bit to deep, when the snap of Gotham's jaw came to close to closing over them and the only thing saving Gotham's Rogues from the collective wrath of two angry Robin's was the weight of their family's morals.
They had to learn to trust each other. But they do.
The insults are more to fill the silence, partially affection and partially with the need to annoy. They watch reruns of Star Trek and play Legend of Zelda in pajama pants (Tim) and hoody's (Damian), half draped over each other with his feet in Tim's lap. When Damian couldn't find one to his satisfaction, he gifted Tim a new skateboard with his own hand drawn and painted design. He sends a video to the family group chat of him laughing when Tim faceplants.
They are the DEFINITION of annoying to each other. Damian chucks clothes at Tim to make him shower, they get into slap fights over breakfast, they sneer at each other's drinks. "With all the coffee it's no wonder you don't grow Drake," While handing a sick Tim herbal tea for his throat.
It's an underlying trust that rarely needs to be affirmed. But when it does Damian won't hesitate to let his opinion be known. Whether it be high school bullies mocking his gangly brother, reporters trying to pit the "blood son" against the "Boy CEO", or shady members of the Gotham elite with too much interest in his family and his company, Damian's blunt attitude comes back with a vengeance. There will be no Wayne Charm, no shop talk, no backhanded compliments, when Damian Wayne gets between them and his brother. It's "I trust my brother," and "No business with the likes of you," or even "When I said you two weren't on the same level, I meant that you were the incompetent one."
Tim always tries to scold him, tells him he shouldn't be petty, I can protect myself demon, but he smiles while he says it.
Stephanie
She teases him mercilessly, will smile sweetly while "blackmailing" him and challenges him to do things he has never done before. Damian won't admit he enjoys any of it even upon threat of death. She's loud, annoying, and demanding and unapologetically so and Damian is convinced she was dropped on her head as a child. Stephanie is his sister and he loves her as a younger brother would, hurling insults at each other while fighting over french fries drinking smoothies in some fast food restaurant at 2 in the afternoon on a day out.
What strikes him about Stephanie is that she demands respect because she knows on a fundamental level that she deserves it, that all of her hard work was her own and she knew she could do it even when everyone else thought she didn't belong. As he grows Damian comes not only to admire her, but finds this a very important lesson to learn for himself.
Stephanie pushes him, she encourages him even if it's hidden under mutually shared insults. On days where she "babysits him" (she does not, Damian tells himself he doesn't need a babysitter he doesn't) she's perfectly happy to work on their motorcycles together, or have random picnics in the park with bags of fast food, or challenge him to rounds of ping pong. They learn eventually that they make a very good team together. Either destroying Tim and Jason in video games, the occasional local ping pong or DDR tournament when visiting Gotham U, or spur of the moment plans in a night time fight. Stephanie is crazy enough to believe it will work, and Damian is crazy enough to believe Stephanie will follow.
Stephanie understands what it feels like to constantly have to justify yourself, to be told you can't measure up and that you're place isn't here, even though you know it is. To have the weight of your family's decisions hanging overhead for the judgment of others.
So they learn to love each other through healthy competition and teasing remarks. Stephanie shoos him off to "talk to kids your own age, don't be so serious!". It's normal, in some ways the closest to normal Damian has had in a long time. And though they won't say it out loud, it's nice to know someone else agrees that they are entitled to these moments of happiness, these moments they were stripped of and denied for so long. They believe in each other and their right to happiness. Damian will never doubt Stephanie's strength, as spoiler or Batgirl or robin or Stephanie, and in return she will never doubt him or his place in their family.
...
Even if that means trying to escape when she wants to play dress up. "I am not your doll Brown," "Fine fine, whatever you say short stack."
Cass:
The moments between Damian and Cass are silent, but if you believe nothing is said then you are entirely wrong. They speak to each other quite often even if they don't use words.
He watches her dance, and thinks she is so strong. Damian swears she could have been a princess in another life, if life had not sunk its fangs in and poisoned her with pain instead. Just as he would have been a prince. While he initially tried to hide it, Cass always knew he was there. Damian watches her. Damian hears her words, her joy and her tears, and puts it down on to charcoal and paper. I hear you, and he shows them to her, how her form litters his pages as she pats his head. There is, Damian thinks, a poetic irony in seeing something so dangerous create something so beautiful. She is art and deserves to be heard, and Damian is grateful that she hears him too. He lets her look at pages of charcoal and ink, at canvases of paint full of everything Damian can't put into words quite yet, and finds understanding.
But while he is a Wayne, he was an Al Ghul at one point and his mother gave him the training every prince should have, skills beyond his sword. So one day, as she stretches, he brings in a case and sets it down with a clunk. He tunes the strings and plays Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor, as she watches him with eyes that understand far too much, eyes that say I know, I hear you baby brother. Damian almost wishes she didn't, partially due to the struggle of his own pride, but also because no one should ever have to understand that kind of pain.
Moments with Cass are quiet, but they are never silent. Cass teaches him understanding, helps teach him empathy. And while Damian knows he can never dance the way she can, he can play and sketch and paint and between them their secrets can no longer be secrets. Cass doesn't teach him how to feel ,no, he's always been too good at that. Instead she teaches him ways to coax them out when the words won't come, to look around him with the wonder he wasn't allowed to have before, to let him be defined by a different set of skills that shows he can create something beautiful too.
Duke:
Damien thinks Duke is "cool", like the kind of cool you see in movies and TV shows, the average teenage boys in jeans and sneakers who fight for the underdog and stand up to bullies in a 3-on-1 fight even if they know they won't win. There is a conviction in Duke that rivals Damian's own, and Damian can't help but admire someone willing to strike out on their own and do something when they felt others were failing.
Duke is "Chill" as Jason likes to say, he's low pressure and not pushy in a way that Damian appreciates. He's calm, not in the stoic way of some of the others, but in a way that doesn't put Damian out of his comfort zone with expectations.
Time spent with Duke often consists of puzzles and card games, or movies. Duke is very good at using Damian's own pride against him to "trick" him into playing, but together they do everything from DnD to Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters. It's relaxing.
Duke tells him about school and if Damian is having trouble with the more normal things of being a tween, like worrying whether other kids like him, or wearing something embarrasing, Duke brings him out of his own head. Duke plays along with his competitive nature, challenging him to races the few times they patrol together. He finds Damian outside drawing, and teaches him soccer. Other times they sit there together, Duke writing whatever comes to mind while Damian sketches. Damian gifts Duke a detailed portrait of himself; standing in the center of the crowded streets, body spliced into neat clockwork-style segments with patches of his Signal uniform, the red jacket from his time in the "We R Robin" crew, his sports uniforms, and casual clothing, the bright light of his powers bursting from within in a halo under the Gotham smog. He is Gotham's daylight protector, unique and gifted, and Damian respects that.
It's not easy, Damian is still young and cocky, still isn't very good at saying what he feels. But Duke sees right through his attempts to play it off, and it's always met with head pats and a "Whatever you say lil' D." Damian won't say it out loud but he thinks that the sheer conviction Duke has for doing what's right bleeds into every aspect of him, and that maybe with time it will do the same for himself. Damian admires his strength of will and determination, and the work Duke is willing to put in to get what he wants.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity; How Nintendo Subverted Expectations and Emphasizes Unity over the Lone Hero Trope
Having played Age of Calamity to death, I was one of the many people who expected the same outcome of a prequel to the much beloved Breath of the Wild; an exciting, battle based game that ultimately confirms the outcome that we see in flashbacks of Link’s service to the princess before his 100 year slumber, a tragedy waiting to happen.
But, spoilers down below, the rug gets pulled from under your feet in the most positive and heartwarming way.
In order to emphasize the message of Age of Calamity, let’s return to Breath of the Wild for a minute. The game shows very clearly that this follows the Hero’s Journey, which we’ve played many times before in Zelda games. This Lone Hero Trope, as I call it, is the dedication of a single person for a greater cause, who shoulders heavy burdens on their own in order to carry out a noble mission. Both Link AND Zelda represent this trope! Not only do we learn of Zelda’s quiet, lone suffering as she struggles and fails to achieve her inner sealing power, but we see it visually when we play as Link, following his quest to defeat Ganon.
Just look at the Memory Images Link follows. When each one opens up, Link and Zelda often stand apart as time begins. Even their fellow Champions stand apart during the first memory where Link is being knighted, expressing doubts and concerns, while Zelda shrinks with reluctance.
But then when we see the opening scene of the first playthrough mission of Age of Calamity, our first shot of Link not only has him teaming up with an entire platoon, but they’re all united. Standing together, roused by a common cause to fight evil, and positioned close together. In many of the cutscenes thereafter, there’s an increasing closeness to all the characters, and a budding sense of familiarity.
What changed? Baby Guardian.
The Baby Guardian is only given a short period of time to be seen by the audience in the opening prequel, awakened by Zelda’s sealing power, and urged to flee back to the past to find her. We see the shift from Lone Hero to Unity right away; Baby Guardian knows they can’t carry out the rescue of Hyrule on their own and instinctively goes to find someone he KNOWS can. In doing so, he finds Link and Impa, who are pulled to Zelda’s side while chasing him. From then on out, this change draws more and more people together.
Now I have my own theory, which you can agree or disagree with. What we see of Baby Guardian in Zelda’s flashbacks of him hark to a childhood when her mother the Queen was still alive. And, to a smaller degree, we can connect this memory to another one not seen, but shown when Zelda gives her father a tool she and her mother found while investigating Sheikah technology.
Though her mother is dead, she is still sending means to protect her family, all of which are only achieved when the characters communicate and listen to each other. King Rhoam would most certainly have perished to the Guardian assault on Hyrule Castle if he had not accepted the tool Zelda gave him, and Zelda would not have developed her power to fight with the Sheikah tools had Baby Guardian not arrived either.
The very fact that there are literal swarms of monsters, more intense challenges, only drives home how hard it is to take someone down when they’re not alone. Any of the playable characters can take down literally hundreds if not THOUSANDS of monsters at a time because in most cases, they’re not doing it on their own. Just look at the characters we can recruit; while Hetsu, the Great Fairies, and Monk Maz Koshia are all aids to Link’s journey in Breath of the Wild, we never receive their aid as staunchly as we do in Age of Calamity. Even Kohga ends up joining the fight, when it becomes clear that Astor is a threat to their existence. And the more that join, the greater the offense.
Why change the future? What turns this prequel into a spinoff with a happy ending? It’s a shift in mindsets; from Rhoam’s to Baby Guardians.
Whether you can appreciate the King of Hyrule as a complex character or hate him for being a terrible father, the fact of the matter is that he is not only a leader, but a manifestation of Hyrule as a kingdom All kings more or less fill this role as a model for what a kingdom could be. Rhoam undoubtedly was raised to follow the Hero’s Journey to the letter, to expect a princess with sealing powers, a Hylian with a sword to seal the darkness and a monster to overcome. But when things don’t happen the way the stories tell him, like when Zelda can’t access her sealing power, he only buckles down on the importance of sole strength.
This ends up being a fatal flaw in Breath of the Wild, as he ends up pushing his daughter away. In his diary, readable in Hyrule Castle if you access his private office, we see his regrets, and decision to accept her no matter what....all far too late by the time he writes them.
But in Age of Calamity, when faced with the huge group Zelda has gathered with Baby Guardian’s help, as well as having been rescued by the very technology he tried to urge Zelda away from, he can’t deny the facts any longer. After Rhoam is recruited as a playable character, we see much less of him as a leader. He’s accepted his daughter’s growth, aided by the help of her friends, and seen the truth for what it is.
That a people united is a people saved.
Now don’t misunderstand me. I love Breath of the Wild. The music, the challenging shrines and boss battles, all of it. However Age of Calamity hit me emotionally and more or less exposed some of the weaknesses of most Zelda games. While there have been mild exceptions, we’re so used to carrying the burden of saving the whole world on our own, we forget just what a crushing responsibility it must be for these young people. We can see it in Zelda’s heartbreaking scene in the Spring of Courage, cursing her fate, pushed to tears, and standing apart. It sends a particularly poignant message to me now, often feeling like the only way something can get done is if I do it on my own.
But Breath of the Wild is evidence to why this doesn’t work. While we can see a true victory over Ganon, a kingdom saved, and a princess rescued, we also see the toll it took before it could be achieved. The Champions, King, and countless other civilians and soldiers are killed. Zelda and Link are left alone again to pick up the pieces of a fractured, weakened kingdom. The Hero’s Journey is set to continue, a long, solitary journey of hardship.
Age of Calamity on the other hand, showed how beneficial and wonderful it is to conquer a daunting world with your friends. Not only does it spirit you to the end of your journey faster, but it reinforces the message that “burdens shared are burdens halved”. And we get to save our friends, by calling upon the ones we made in Breath of the Wild through Riju, Teba, Sidon, and Yunobo. Most of the missions playable in the game, at least for replay, are able to be done by ANYONE. If you play the final battle with Link, you can replay it with Baby Guardian.
Anyone can be a hero if you fight together.

RP Hooks ––––
In need of a dress? Isabelle got you covered! You might have heard from the talented miqo’te, who specialized in dresses, maybe from someone who was a customer, or someone from the weavers guild recommended her.
Miqo’te in Kugane are still quite rare, as i heared, so Isabelle is easy to spot there, when she takes a stroll through the city, talking to people and learning more about the culture and how to recreate the eastern clothes. Maybe you run into her there?
The Birdseekers. Maybe you know the family from Limsa, known for their business around ships, specialized on making the sails or clothes for the crew.
Adventuring is fun and interesting, as you can explore new places, meet new people... that’s why Isabelle does it every now and then. You might have seen her at the adventurerers guild in Ul’dah, or on one of her trips through Eorzea.
“What’s this aether...?”, you might ask if you can see or at least feel it, as Isabelles aether is far more condensed than anything you might have seen, even though she doesn’t even know that herself...
A dancing beauty, as some people describe her, although she is still learning to dance and makes clumsy mistakes here and there. Maybe you want to lend her a hand?
What i’m looking for ––––
New friends, new people to interact with, new stories... i just want to have some fun. If you are interested, just send me a message! Nearly everything is fine, although i don’t want to do ERP. Slight nsfw is okay, like... talking about things and stuff. (Like... look at her chest. It’s, eh... yeah. I think one can mention that) But that’s nothing mandatory!
Other Information  ––––
OOC: I’m a male student from germany and 26 years old right now. Most of the time you can find me playing video games. One of my favs is the Legend of Zelda, but there are many more, like Animal Crossing right now, so i might talk about that a lot, too, so you have been warned. As of FF XIV, i started to do the extreme raids a while ago, so at times i might be busy with them. So... just so you know.
RP Style: Personally, i prefer to write stories in Discord, as i haven’t done any rp ingame yet and i don’t feel like i am any good at that. But there has to be a first time, right? So if you want to rp ingame, i’m interested in giving that a shot. Just ask! :D
Contact Information: You can message me here on tumblr, or find me on Discord - just dm me for the info! Also, as my mainblog is @pjarox, you can also message me there, and follows will come from that blog, too, so don’t be confused.
Availabilty: As i am from europe, my timezone is CET, where i am active around 7pm~1am most of the week, but tbh, i will answer whenever i have the possibility to.

A CAOS PROFILE STUDY: FAUSTUS BLACKWOOD
From the very first moment he appears on the screen, Father Faustus Blackwood, High Priest of the Greendale’s witches coven and Headmaster of the Academy of the Unseen Arts is set up to be the show’s big bad. But is he truly evil? How did we get this way? Can he ever defeat the Spellmans? Using what the show’s two seasons has already given us and little guesswork, I’ll try my best to answer these questions. Before I get started, I like to state that the ideas discussed in this are 100% mine. The next season could prove me right or wrong, I don’t know. You, of course, could agree or disagree. I would love to see a debate here but, as this blog is a safe place, I must ask everyone to please keep things friendly.  Now, let’s begin:
BACKGROUND
As a feminist, I want to address Blackwood’s extreme sexism. There is nothing good to defend here. Since this wasn’t even an issue until the middle in season 2, some viewers have blamed lazy writing and I don’t disagree but it is in the show so I’ll talk about it. I’m fairly sure that little boys aren’t born thinking that they’re better than little girls.  They need to be thaught that shit. Which leads  me to my 1st   guesswork. We know nothing of Faustus’s childhood, but given his disgust for ‘half- breeds’, I felt safe saying that the Blackwood family are all pure-bloods. I imagine that Faustus’s father is an ancient warlock who had a weak, submissive witch wife and possibly both believe that ‘witches must serve warlocks’ jazz. As for Faustus’s boyhood, I am 2 minds; he could be a golden child-a only child or maybe an only son, favored above his sisters because he was a boy. Or if he had many brothers, he might have been a black sheep; overlooked, teased for preferring books to more manly pursuits.
Whatever lays in his childhood, at age 16, Faustus Blackwood signed his name in the book of the beast and enrolled in the Academy of  Unseen Arts. He must have done well there. After all, he was popular enough to win the election of top boy (unless he cheated) and he’s a powerful warlock so he must have studied hard. Of course, he becomes a teacher and while teaching at the academy, Faustus meets the family that changes his life forever; the spellmans.
There is   a lot to unpack here so I decided to discuss Blackwood relationships have broken down Spellman by  Spellman:
EDWARD: Faustus was Edward’s mentor. It’s possible that, in the beginning, given Edward’s power as a warlock and the fact he was the top  boy himself, Faustus could see himself in Edward. As a teacher/mentor and student, Faustus and Edward were close, possibly even friends. However, the clash between them had to happen. Why? Faustus Blackwood is an extreme traditionist, Edward Spellman, the extreme reformist. It’s the old vs new, Blackwood vs Spellman. The fact that Edward was made high priest, a student put in a position of power ahead of him, must have rubbed Blackwood the wrong way. It’s not only over ideas these men clash it’s also over love. The scene where Faustus tells Zelda that he once confided in Edward that he was going ask for Zelda’s hand in marriage. What’s so interesting here it’s not what’s be said, it’s the faces. Zelda has a look of surprise, this is brand new information to her and she’s not sure what to do with it. But look at Blackwood’s face when he said Edward rebuked him. The man looks in physical pain. Okay, it’s likely that Edward knew about Faustus’s way with women and didn’t want his sister near that mess. Yet, I would like to know what the hell Edward said to Faustus about marrying Zelda that even now, 16 years after Edward’s death and Faustus still looks like a sad puppy just by recalling this memory. It’s also worth noting that Zelda also taught at the academy while Edward was alive. Talk on the show suggests the brother and sister were close and as he was Edward’s mentor it is not that far a stretch to imagine that after he began high priest and headmaster, Edward would make Faustus and Zelda his top advisers. If this is the case, Edward might have unknowingly set the groundwork for Faustus Blackwood’s resentment of him.  Think about it; Faustus started out as Edward’s mentor NOW he’s Edward’s employee at school, Faustus is a devout man but Edward is high priest so he must obey but disagrees with all his polities add to all this that Faustus is working closely with Zelda-a woman he’s clearly in love/in lust with  but had been forbidden to marry. At this point,  Blackwood tries to find comfort by having meaningless sex with women who mean nothing to him. Things come to a head when one of these women (Prudence’s mother) becomes pregnant with his child. Sometimes after giving birth to Prudence, a  female child, the mother begs Faustus to marry her but Faustus, perhaps still entertaining hopes of making Zelda his wife, flatly refuses to marry the mother of his child so the poor woman drowns herself out of shame. Blackwood didn’t feel guilty about his lover’s suicide on the surface, but it was guilt, shame or pity that makes Faustus take his motherless infant to be fostered at the academy, where Blackwood can keep an eye on Prudence but isn’t forced to actually forced to claim her as his own. I had already said that Faustus and Edward don’t agree on many ideas but a prime example of this is their conflicting views are on mortals. Faustus has no needs for mortals, it’s against witch law for a witch/warlock to marry a mortal and Edward did just that by marrying the human Diana. Now Edward is not just changing the rules, he just breaking them. Edward fell in love with Diana-a full human who knew nothing of witch ways, the church or path of the night yet Edward married her and only punishment he received was to sign his child’s name in the book of the beast, something he was expected to do anyway. Yet Faustus was in love with Zelda-a full witch of their world and devout to the path of night, the ideal partner, yet he was forbidden to marry her. Blackwood did eventually, marry a witch named Constance, but from what I’ve seen there’s nothing of love or lust between them. So, why her? I personally believe that Faustus was forced to marry Constance, possibly even by Edward himself. Let me explain. At some point, Zelda, maybe even before Prudence’s birth, must of left teaching to focus on her training as a  midwife, maybe she even left the country, going to England to study with Hilda.  Yet Edward knew his sisters would not be gone forever. If he knew the sad story about Prudence’s mother, Edward would have kept a  close eye on Faustus and was dismayed when Blackwood showed no signs of interest in settling down with a woman that wasn’t Edward’s sister. When Constance showed interest in becoming Lady Blackwood, Edward took matters in his own hands. Playing on Blackwood’s love of power, as headmaster, Edward offers  Faustus a  big job promotion,   but ONLY if he marries Constance, Faustus grumpily agreed. As high priest, Edward perhaps married them himself, killing Faustus’s last, lingering hope of marrying Zelda, well, at least, for a while…
I’d saved the million-dollar question for last: did Faustus Blackwood kill Edward and Diana Spellman? The 1st time I saw the show I thought of course he did but as  I reviewed the evidence in mind,  I honestly don’t know. True, as a warlock, Blackwood could cause a plane to go down without being near it and Edward’s ghost directly Sabrina that it was Blackwood that killed him. Case closed? Not really. Edward is one DUMB ghost.  Right after he tells his daughter that Blackwood bought his plane down, he also tells Sabrina that if Blackwood marries Zelda, he will kill her too but we know that this never happens. I really do get the need to reach out to his child,  but for all her determination and well-intentions, Sabrina is still only 16, a child and not the best pick to stop the wedding.  My question is if Edward wants to truly stop the wedding, what didn’t he just go talk to the bride, Zelda himself? Zelda even has this question herself. But let’s get back to the main question, did Blackwood kill Edward? On the morning of the wedding, Sabrina tells Nick about Hamlet.  For those of not in the know,  Hamlet’s uncle murdered his brother but the guilt only shows itself after Hamlet gets actors to reenact the murder in a play presented to his uncle. Sabrina does not this effect. Sure, when  ‘Edward and Diana’ crash the wedding, Blackwood sees right through it, he knows it’s just the kids using a glamour spell. But in explaining he knows it’s them, he oddly pays Edward a  complement, says that Edward would disrespect their ways by interrupting a sacred rite like a marriage service. Afterward, Faustus still shows no guilt, he simply goes on with his day, throwing Ambrose in a cell and marries Zelda privately. Is Blackwood’s hatred of Edward so deep that he simply feels no guilt over the murder or did he not commit the crime? If it is Blackwood’s master plan to destroy the Spellmans, why kill Edward and then wait 16 years to make his next move? The show doesn't give us enough evidence, either way, to show him as proven guilty or innocent.
Okay, guys, this went on way longer than I thought but I have a lot more to say so I'll break this into parts. Meanwhile, I want to hear from you! Do you like this? Do you agree or disagree? Did I miss something? A like is nice but I LIVE FOR COMMENTS AND I LOVE TO TALK TO PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you seen the newest Extra Credits episode? And what do you think about them in general?
I assume this is in reference to this:
youtube
I can see where they’re coming from. Nazis were bad; as close to real, actual “evil” as it gets. They were pro-genocide, gained a lot of power, and laid wasted to entire cities. They killed over ten million civilians. Not soldiers, innocent people. On purpose!
And we, in 2019, have a Nazi problem. There’s no other way to put it.
And the problem is, we are so many generations removed from the original Nazi problem, a lot of us don’t know how to deal with it. Which is part of the reason it’s spread so easily, because the waters have become so muddied that a lot of naive, nice people are too afraid to take a hard line stance against them.
Because, well, gosh, they aren’t really Nazis, are they? They can’t be, right? Nazis don’t exist anymore, do they? We can’t just throw around the term “Nazi” to describe anyone we don’t like. That’s Godwin’s law! Right?
And then you have people who definitely do not personally self-identify as a Nazi, but are definitely and unintentionally contributing to the growing firestorm out of ignorance if nothing else.
The heart of Extra Credits is in the right place; they are merely trying to find the root cause in all of this. And their solution is a simple one: make it clear that the Nazis are bad. Do not humanize evil. Not as a joke, not as anything. The brand of hatred the Nazis were peddling was worse than a virus, because even if you portray them as weak and ineffective, that still gives them door to the inside.
And yet we have become so complacent in the idea that Nazis were never coming back, that Nazis were so ineffective, that we refuse to believe their ideals are right here under our noses. I mean, we’ve beaten the Nazis in movies and video games so many times! It’s over now! We’ve known this story since the day we were born! It can’t happen anymore!
It’s made us afraid to label obvious white supremacy. Because there’s no way that’s still a thing, and it would be both offensive to them and embarrassing to you use that term. But that just gives more power to white supremacy, because it becomes a way for them to have control. It’s put us in a position where corporations are now afraid to denounce these ideologies – things that would normally be no-brainers – because they’re afraid they might lose business. And the shadow these people can hide in grows ever wider.
The problem with the Extra Credits video is they gloss over a lot of background information and context in favor of making a video that’s meant to be easily digestible. It comes off as being very poorly communicated, more than a little preachy and even hammy. People are having what I would describe as an expected reaction.
Tumblr media
Which I think classifies most of what I don’t like about Extra Credits these days. Ever since they changed hosts, they’ve felt a bit less high-concept. The new host seems just as interested in reminding the audience he has a cat that meows sometimes than actually unearthing the logic behind deep gameplay systems. Extra Credits used to feel like a show I would get genuine insight from, but I’ve been feeling a lot more dumb, obvious observations coming from them as of late.
Like recently they did an episode called “Sticking to Your Guns” about how games don’t need to change so drastically and how we need to better identify the core of what people are looking for. The examples used are Dragon Quest 11 and Doom 2016. Though it briefly touches on how different Doom 3 was, it completely ignores the fact that we got games like Dragon Quest 10, which… well, we didn’t actually get Dragon Quest 10, because it was an MMO exclusively released in Japan. Which is… pretty different!
The rest of the video are all surface level comments that boil down to “Don’t forget your fans and just do the things that people like.” But how useful is that advice in practice, really? It only feels logical in hindsight, because you’ll never know you messed this up until you’re in the thick of trying to recover. It’s like Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. They did the wrong thing to show them what the right thing was.
The video could have dug deeper to understand why games like Doom 3 or Dragon Quest 10 happened, but instead it just glosses over those.
So, yeah. I’m sure Extra Credits is still trying to do the right thing, and I don’t even necessarily disagree with them a lot, but they’ve been kind of clumsy since getting this new host. They’re saying the right things in the wrong ways. Which is a bummer.

My Smash Bros. for Switch      Character Wish List
You know It’s been awhile since I’ve made an article for my blog and with Smash for Switch having just been announced in the latest direct; I think it’s the right time to add a spot of fuel to the Smash Hype Train.
A few things of note in regarding this list before I begin, This list will be presented in a top 10 like basis but I will be cheating a little bit when talking about certain characters and scenarios. Also, most of the characters on this list will be first or second party and no veterans; I want to focus on the new. This list will be pretty lengthy but it’s Smash related so I believe it’s deserving of such pedigree.
With all that out of the way let’s begin.
   10. Part 1. Simon Belmont/ Castlevania
Tumblr media
When It comes to 3rd party representatives in smash I’m of the belief that said fighter should have two qualifications. 1. Noteworthy as a franchise in gaming, meaning either Iconic or influential, even classic. 2. History with Nintendo. Many of the 3rd parties represented in Smash already reach such criteria in my opinion and Castlevania’s Simon Belmont, I believe is another well suited for battle.
Like Mega Man, Castlevania as a series has seen a wide variety of releases over the last thirty years but the main series has received a ton of love on Nintendo’s platforms. Now there are many faces that share the name Belmont in the series but like Mega Man, I see Sakurai pulling mostly from the original, classic trilogy with some exceptions. The Belmont whip is such an awesome and iconic weapon and Castlevania has many interchangeable secondary weapons, there are B moves just waiting to happen.
But how likely is Castlevania to be represented. That falls on Konami and yes we all know that they are a fickle sort to say the least. I suppose it would be wishful thinking but Hey! You never can predict the future when it comes to smash, only speculate. It would be a pleasure to see Simon break out of the Pachinko parlor and into the fighting ring, if you know what I mean.
10. Part 2. Bomberman
Tumblr media
Like I said I’m cheating a little with this but personally I group both Simon Belmont and Bomberman together on the same spot, both of which are owned by Konami although for Bomberman that wasn't always the case. Bomberman has been around since 1983, his first game having been developed by now defunct Hudson Soft and released on multiple platforms including Nintendo consoles. Today Bomberman has been featured in over 70+ games, spanning countless generations of platforms.
More recently Bomberman appeared on the Nintendo switch exclusive Super Bomberman R; a game that Konami surprisingly kept alive past it’s initial release. So unlike Simon Belmont, many would argue that Bomberman would have a better shot. However some would also argue as to what Bomberman could bring to the roster; he just throws Bombs right? Well to that I say, dig a little deeper.
While it’s true that his primary form of combat would involve bombs. if you’ve ever played a Bomberman game you’d know that there are many hazards and pick ups that could be brought to the table. Bomberman is no stranger to 3D platformers either, with both Bomberman Hero and 64 on the N64, there are multiple moves that could be incorporated into a viable move set. In addition he even has his own animal companions, one example being Louies. A race of rabbit like, kangaroo creatures that are essentially Bomberman’s answer to Mario’s Yoshi. Naturally There would be elements of Super Bomberman R featured as well.
In conclusion I believe Bomberman has potential and between him and Simon; I think Bomberman would be the likelier candidate as a potential Konami representative. Thought honestly I would love to have them both. You know what they say, the more the merrier.
9. Banjo and Kazooie
Tumblr media
I agree many would argue that Banjo Kazooie is really no longer relevant but there is one thing I want to address. To me a 3rd party character should have at least some relevance to Nintendo. Smash Bros. as a whole is a celebration of Nintendo and it’s many franchises. And no other 3rd party character has had a relationship with Nintendo quite like the Bear and Bird tag team.
You know the story. Rare and Nintendo had a perfect chemistry together, releasing some of the most well acclaimed system sellers of their time during the Snes/N64 era and then Micro$oft came along and the rest in unfortunately history. Banjo Kazooie is considered by many to be their best work/outside of Donkey Kong Country. That’s were i’m coming from, this game was one of my childhood favorites and personally I don’t view them as third party, I view the duo more as long lost family. Like that cousin you never knew you had but just met at the recent family reunion.
Let’s face it Banjo and Kazooie would be perfect for smash,Their move set practically rights itself. Any number of Bottle’s moves from egg shooting to beak barging, flying across the stage in a barrage of feathers the list goes on. Not to mention any number of Mumbo’s transformations that could also play a huge role in their play style, including Final Smash. In terms of stages, naturally it would have to be Gruntilda’s castle, complete with the Witch herself as a boss. flying around and striking players with her magical spells and making them cringe with her rhyming quells.
Do Banjo and Kazooie even have a chance? It’s hard to say, Micro$oft’s Phil Spenser has publicly stated in the past that he wouldn’t mind leasing the Bear and Bird to the Smash team in regards to the smash poll. I wan’t to believe that I really do.If Banjo and Kazooie never do come back to their full potential I would at the very least love to have them here in Smash. I can dare to dream.
8. Impa/ The Legend of Zelda
Tumblr media
Lets be honest, Do we really need another sword fighter? NO!
But do we need more Zelda representatives? YES!
With Link sporting his new Breath of the Wild look and many jumping on board with numerous Zelda characters they wish too include in the roster, plus additional hopes of Zelda getting a coat of Breath of the wild Paint as well. I felt it only fitting to go ahead with my personal Zelda pick. Legend of Zelda naturally is a vast franchise with many unique faces over the years and it can be difficult to pick just one.
Many want the Skull Kid from Majora’s Mask or Midna of Twilight Princess, Ghirahim of Skyward Sword or any one of the Champions from Breath of the Wild; the list goes on. But why Impa, well a few reasons; she’s awesome in Hyrule Warriors, I mean let’s be real that game can make a great fighter out of anyone in the Zelda Cannon but Impa stands out to me the most.  My second and most important point in this case is her relevance in the series. Impa has been in a majority of games in the cannon almost since the beginning, that can’t be said for many other charters in the franchise, aside from the hero of time himself, the titular Princess and the big bad.
While Impa has had drastic changes from game to game. In one instance being a frail, older woman or in another being captain of the royal guard, regardless she’s still there. That longevity and adaptability I think would have her recognized by Sakurai as a Series regular and worthy of a spot in the roster. Of course she is a sword fighter, many tire of that and I can relate but taking Hyrule Warriors into consideration I think she could be a lot of fun to play as and a great addition to Smash’s leading ladies. She’d be plenty more unique than Lucina that’s for sure. Also if it’s not to much to ask give Ganondorf an original move set this time around, Please!?!.
  7. Dixie Kong
Tumblr media
Yep, I want more Kong's in Smash and while I too support the King K.Rool movement; for this list I’m gonna be a little different. Unlike K.Rool many argue that Dixie would be way to similar to Diddy in terms of move pool but I have to disagree, at least to a point. Dixie naturally has a built in recovery with her pony tail which alone can be used in a variety of melee attacks and grabs. Like Diddy and his peanut pop guns, Dixie would utilize a weapon from DK 64, in this case the feather bow previously used by Tiny Kong. Dixie has also been one to dabble in musical arts with an electric guitar; maybe that can play a part in her moves as well.
I do think Diddy and Dixie would share similarities with each other but in the same way Mario and Luigi or Ness and Lucus would. They would both have unique spins on a familiar play style but incorporate separate elements from their franchise. Hey we still don’t have any sign of the animal buddies in smash; like Rambi or Squawks and the like.  Why not include them in Dixie’s move set or impalement them in D.K or Diddy’s, I’m just spit balling ideas here.
So whether it be King K.Rool, Dixie, Funky or even Cranky and what have you, I and many others would love to see more Donkey Kong Country love in Smash Bros.
6. Issac; Golden Sun
Tumblr media
When it comes to Nintendo R.P.G’s and Tactics games people have their obvious choices. Another Fire Emblem rep. (shudders) or a face from the recent Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to join up with shulk. There is one classic Nintendo R.P.G series that many overlook, that is except for smash fans like myself.
Issac is an interesting choice, the Golden Sun series has seen a fun, little trilogy across Nintendo’s portable systems. Now Issac was an assist trophy in previous Smash titles but he’s so much more than that little forced push thing you saw there. Issac is Golden Sun’s equivalent to an earth bender, using a variety of landscape and plantlike magic to defeat his foes.
There’s lots of potential for unique attacks here to be explored outside of the traditional R.P.G offerings. We’ve seen so many other elemental’s in Smash already with fire, Electricity and even Water; why not earth?
Golden Sun is a series that needs more love and Smash is no exception. I also wouldn't mind a new Golden Sun on the Switch but we can’t have everything now can we?
    5. Takamaru; The mysterious Murasame Castle
Tumblr media
I’m always a sucker for old school choices; I call them the 8-bit Ambassadors. You know the ones, Ice Climbers, Duck Hunt, R.O.B, Pit, Little Mac and so forth. There’s always one in each addition of Smash and my list is no exception and while choices like balloon Fighter or the Excite Bike Racer were tempting, I just had to include this guy.
The final member of the Famicom 4 and an assist trophy in Smash 4, Takamaru could have a lot of potential evidence for his inclusion. Sakurai has actually considered him for the roster numerous times, dating as far back as melee. The biggest reason for his exclusion before was his lack of presence outside of Japan. Nowadays he’s more well known namely for said Smash appearance but in addition his game was featured in Nintendo Land on the Wii U and his original game was released on the 3DS’s virtual console, so there’s that.
Again some may grimace at yet another sword user but he’s a Samurai; A bloody Samurai. I don’t think anyone should complain on that subject alone. From his one game they could easily pull a satisfying move set and even then they can get get creative. Also have I mentioned yet;  He’s a fricken Samurai. I think I made my point.
  4. Another Kirby Rep.
Tumblr media
Much like Zelda and Donkey Kong, I think Kirby is do for another character spot. There are just so many possibilities that it can be difficult to pick just one and let’s face it, the recent Star Allies isn’t making it any easier. Favorite choices include Bandanna Dee, Knuckle Joe, Marx, Magolor, Gooey, Adeline, Susie, The Robobot armor and the list continues. But I have my own Ideas
I want to see Kirby’s Animal Friends Rick the hamster,Coo the Owl and Kine the fish as a collective one piece character. I don’t necessarily see them as a tag team but rather you would primarily play as Rick, Coo and Kine would assist in various moves. Examples include Coo being used in a up B special, as well as with aerial attacks and Kine being used for stronger smash attacks and a down B special; Kine would also allow Rick to swim and never drown in water areas in certain stages.
As far as moves, simple. Thanks to Kirby they can perform a variety of moves that could be implemented quite easily into their respective move set. Rick can breath fire and produce spikes. Coo can throw Talons, be turned into a feather duster and produce lightning. And Kine could be thrown around like a weight, make shock waves and bust light bulbs. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. That’s my idea anyway.
In addition I also wan’t to highlight Marx for a moment. I think he would be the perfect villain to represent the Kirby series (even though he’s only been in one game) and I think they could have a lot of fun designing a move set around him. Though that’s just the Kirby fan in me coming out and saying “Hi”.
 3. Dr.Eggman
Tumblr media
  My last 3rd party pic.
Admittedly I’m not the biggest Sonic fan but I’m of the belief that at some point, in some way; Sonic is getting a second rep. I would much rather have another Sega franchise represented; we know that's not gonna happen but I would love to be proven wrong.
That being said as to which character; many would love Knuckles or tails and many sonic fans suggest Shadow but as for my choice, Why not Dr. Eggman himself. Like K.Rool, Smash needs more villains, Smash needs more heavy weights and Eggman fits that criteria to a T.
Eggman or Dr. Robotnik I think would be a worthy addition to the roster. He would fight in a mech, much like Bowser Junior and would have the raw horsepower rivaling that of Bowser or Donkey Kong. As far as moves you would have a plethora of boss battles spanning nearly thirty years of Sonic games to choose from.
Like King Dedede and his Waddle Dees in brawl, Eggman could summon his robot minions to do his dirty work in many instances and ranged projectiles like missiles and bombs are a given. Honestly I think this could work, fighting in a mech would not be out of the ordinary for him, just look at Sonic Adventure 2 or that Sonic arcade fighter. Shoot! I’m kinda getting giddy over this.
  2. Dillon; Dillon’s rolling western
Tumblr media
A personal pic more than anything else.
As a causal fan of the downloadable 3DS series I think Dillon would be a fun addition to the roster. However I don’t really see it happening unfortunately, many would complain that he would be to similar to Sonic and personally I think Dillon could easily differentiate himself from the blue hedgehog by showcasing various weapons and other game play mechanics the series is known for but at the end of the day this one is really a pie in the sky choice.
Although Dillon is a Nintendo IP and lets face it Nintendo is running out of options when it comes to newer franchises, We got the Splatoon Inklings and I’m sure an Arms fighter is on the way but then what? No matter the case I’m positive the Smash team has something planned up their sleeves.
I don’t know maybe it’s just me but I really like the western setting. We have fantasy and Sci fi represented in smash already and I think of the idea of having a cowboy in the line up and the thought just makes me smile for some reason. So yeah, maybe it’s just me.
1. Waluigi; Mario
Tumblr media
Whiter it be out of sheer stubbornness or innocent curiosity; I kinda want to see the purple clad mischief maker finally make his Smash debut. Much like Fire Emblem many would rather not have another Mario character make the cut after getting what? Three reps in the last installment and I can defiantly understand where you come from by that logic.
However to end of this list I wanted to include a popular fan pic and it was a coin toss between him or Ridley so, there ya go. But to be frank I think a move set for this guy would be really interesting, to say the least. Like Wario his moves would be weird and Sporadic; Waluigi could even take inspiration from the sports and party games he calls home; utilizing various sporting equipment and referencing classic Mario Party Mini games.
Hell! in some games Waluigi’s proven himself to be a certified water bender and I’m not making that up. And if you’ve played Mario Golf on the 3DS or if you've seen him in action in the latest Mario Tennis coming to the switch; you know very well what his Final Smash has to be.
Also a Waluigi Pinball stage needs to be a thing. And let’s not forget his taunts; you know what I’m talking bout’ Strikers fans.
  Bonus. Poochy; Yoshi’s Island
Tumblr media
     Okay here me out on this. I want Poochy in Smash for one reason. His Final Smash, now hear me out on this;
His final smash would be Touch Fuzzy get Dizzy. He shakes the Fuzzies out of his fur like fleas and they would bounce around the stage until they’ve made direct contact with the player. Poochy’s final smash would be a remake of Luigi’s final smash in brawl; the negative zone.
Tell me that’s not a great idea, I NEED THAT.
And that concludes my Smash for Switch wish list. I hope you enjoyed this; do you agree or disagree with my choices? Who do you wan’t for the next smash? The hype train is once again leaving the station and it’s time for us Smash fans to rejoice. It’s going to be a short but wild ride, so let’s enjoy it while it lasts.

More of my favorite YouTube comments
(in response to Musical Hell's review of Legends of Oz: Dorothy's return) "There's no way you're going to make a rainbow look threatening to anybody but a FOX news anchor." Allow me to offer some counterexamples. Prism Justice, Disgaea 2. Sonic Rainboom, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. All of the light-elemental attack spells in Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. Depending on how you interpret its appearance, Prismatic Spray, Dungeons and Dragons. And many more, I'm sure.
(in response to the educational video Social Acceptability) If I were writing this, it would probably end with Marion, Clara, and Pete starting a revolution and eventually overthrowing the clique, er, "cleek".
(in response to Off Camera Secrets | Pokemon Snap - Boundary Break) I know it's probably a coincidence, but I found it interesting that you said "The Rapidash that GALLOP behind the scenes," since Gallop is Rapidash's Japanese name.
(in response to MasaeAnela's Let's Play of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze) Searching for keys in an underwater maze as a mammal with a limited air supply while awesome music plays. Now, am I talking about Shoal Atoll or practically every level in the Genesis Ecco games? :)
(in response to MasaeAnela's Let's Play of Super Mario World) "Who wants to eat dolphins?" The Vortex Queen, for one.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of Suikoden II) Random fun fact related to the Jowy gender issue: I actually had a female friend in high school who sort of looked like Jowy.
(in response to SlimKirby's Let's Play of Sonic CD) Sonic: "I'm outta here!" Kids in the background: "YAY!"
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All) Other commentator: Is yours and Maya's priorities being similar/the same a good thing, or a bad thing? :) Me: If we knew that, we'd probably know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.
(in response to Shoot for the NBA! 10 cats obsessed with Basketball) Air Bud...WITH CATS! =^_^=
(in response to SlimKirby's Let's Play of Sonic Adventure DX) It took you two minutes to find One Piece? That's pretty impressive - Luffy and his crew still haven't found it after like 800 episodes. :)
(in response to MasaeAnela's Let's Play of Donkey Kong Country Returns) World 2 boss: We Bare Crabs.
(in response to Eye of Sol's review of Family Guy) "Esoteric"? Sol, Family Guy is not a food. :) Seriously, though, it's nice to see a non-negative review of this show.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of Suikoden) Say what you will about Tesla's "Albert" disguise, he at least knows not to use his name and portrait in his text box when using it. :)
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations) Other commentator: So for those that remember Phoenix being in the hospital earlier on, I think we can conclude that the guy is legit invincible. Chewed and ate glass/metal that had poison kept in it, been punched on two separate occasions by massive dudes, threatened by gangsters, attacked with a 600,000 volt stun-gun, hit over the head with a fire extinguisher, and has now fallen into a river infamous for having bodies that end up in there never turning up. Phoenix is hacking the game so hard it's unreal. Me: And, worst of all...eating Jean Armstrong's cooking!
(in response to Resulka's Let's Play of Ultima VII: Serpent Isle) The fact that Voldin is the senior member of the royal council should be proof enough that the city of Fawn doesn't banish people just for being ugly. :)
(in response to Bobsheaux's review of The Duke) Look on the bright side: at least you aren't a solid gold lion. :)
(in response to Bobsheaux's review of The Duke) Other commentator 1: You know this movie doesn't sound all that enjoyable. Me: That's like saying the Pacific Ocean is moist.
(in response to Failous' review of Beauty and the Beast Bevanfield) So...wait. You don't hate the 17th century, or you don't know why you hate the 17th century? :)
(in response to Failous' review of Cricket on the Hearth) Other commentator: Old Man makes every movie better. Me: Let's agree to disagree.
(in response to Failous' review of Anastasia (Golden Films)) Other commentator: The only credit I give to goldenfilms that they at least know about the tsar tragedy and didn't sugarcoat they're tragic deaths...While those 3 godawful  crappy animated films of titanic took a crap on the tragic deaths of the million of people whom died on the titanic............etc...... Me: How can millions of people have died on a ship with a maximum capacity of 3547?
(in response to BCSBuster's Let's Play of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time) Maybe it's just me, but those eyespots on the back of Ruto's head are pretty disturbing.
(in response to BCSBuster's Let's Play of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time) Counterpoint: The Deku Tree is dead, so how's he going to stop you from going inside? :)
(in response to Lewtoons' review of Beauty and the Beast) This is automatically better than Phelous' review on the ground of containing 100% less Phelous.
(in response to Bobsheaux's review of The Swan Princess 5 & 6) Other commentator: Elise should probably be more grateful for her princess title and being adopted by the unrealistically nice royalty, considering she, you know, came from a family of wood cutters? Me: Agreed. After all, Derek and Odette didn't kill her parents and destroy her village, only keeping her alive so that she could tell them where the village's secret treasure was kept.
(in response to MasaeAnela's Let's Play of Katamari Damacy) My personal theory about why people don't notice katamaris is that they generate SEP fields.
(in response to MasaeAnela's Let's Play of Katamari Damacy) What would the "hunk" constellation be, though? I picture it being Hercules or Orion.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of D*ng*nr*np*) Other commentator: Bacula is the son of Dracula from Phoenix Wright. Explaining why Bacula has the Edgeworth voice. Because Bacula is Edgeworth. Edgeworth is part of the Phoenix Wright trilogy which has three games. Triangles have three sides. Illuminati has a triangle shaped symbol with three sides. Bacula is Illuminati. Me: And my brother is my sister and my sister is my mother and Sakunoshin is my sister and Akai Homura is a woman!
(in response to Phoebe Kalinowski's Let's Play of Terranigma) And, of course, part of the path to becoming two-legged was to become a rabbit with the face of a cat.
(in response to Musical Hell's review of Peter Pan Live) I believe in coyotes and time as an abstract.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of D*ng*nr*np*) Spoiler alert: Rosebud was Charles Foster Kane's sled.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of D*ng*nr*np*) Other commentator: Aaaaaand Hifumi's dead. Yeah, no big deal. Seriously though, I still can't help but feel bad for the guy. A murder is a murder, after all. And he was a funny dude in his own way, so it's kinda sad because of that, too. Me: I officially lost any sympathy I might have had for him once he started creeping on Alter Ego. Sorry, but that's just how I feel.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of D*ng*nr*np*) Multiple killings with hammers...it must be Maxwell Edison! I know he used a silver hammer and these ones are wood, but you take what you can get.
(in response to Children's Film Riffs' commentary on Why Did The Bus Stop?) Why did the bus stop? Because it crashed. Why did the bus crash? Because Jimmy was driving. Why couldn't Jimmy drive? Because he didn't have any arms or legs. Why didn't Jimmy have any arms or legs? Because he was a potato.
(in response to Movie Nights' Mary Kate and Ashley Triple Feature #1) Say what you will about this, I do like that one twin's black tank top with the gold dragon or whatever.
(in response to Bobsheaux's review of The Legend of Frosty the Snowman) Karen doesn't need Frosty anymore because right after the first movie, she fell off the roof where Santa left her and died instantly.
(in response to Thomas the Riffed Engine and Friends' review of Fiery Flynn) "It would only make sense for Thomas the Tank Engine to have a fire engine character..." By that logic, it would only make sense for Fireman Sam to have a steam engine character to teach about railway procedure.
(in response to Phoebe Kalinowski's Let's Play of StarTropics, specifically the My Country 'Tis of Thee/God Save the Queen snippet) Let's just split the difference and say that it was the anthem of the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen. :)
(in response to Bobsheaux's review of The Nutcracker: The Untold Story) In a world of living toys, I'd say that, yeah, toys ARE the worst things you could burn.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice) Too many glands...so he's the anti-Zucotti Manicotti?
(in response to Phoebe Kalinowski's Let's Play of Equestria Bound) Other commentator: You know, as much as Mother 3 was a good game, I am still completely frustrated by its ending.  Was it a happy ending?  A dark ending?  I still have no idea. Me: It's whatever kind of ending you want it to be. Personally, I like to think of it as a happy ending because Lucas deserves one, dammit.
(in response to Top 10 Worst RPG Dungeons - PlayStation Edition) The Kislev Sewers is, indeed, the pits - literally and figuratively. :)
(in response to Miss Nightmare's review of Gumby: The Movie) I haven't seen the actual movie, but I have seen Bobsheaux's review, and you are right about the song being a total earworm.
(in response to a video of the Ritual of Fire going wrong in Ultima VIII) Other commentator: Lol in Ultima VII I would take items from dungeons and it would be "stealing," guards would come etc lol. I remember in Ultima V the best way to get good items is to steal magic keys from the merchant in Minoc then raid British's basement. I think the only thing bad it does is make the mage in Trinsic not tell you the mantra of Honor. I wish getting rich was that easy in real life! Hey could you do me a quick favor and tell me if you are able to watch my uploads or if they are blocked Me: And, considering that the mantra of Honor never changes... ;)
(in response to Lucahjin's review of D*ng*nr*np* 2) Other commentator: Remember when Lucah was so mad about Mahiru's murder? And really anxious to find the culprit? I guess we know just how much she actually cared for her. Let's not forget in our rush of sympathy that Fuyuhiko murdered a girl while in high school with a baseball bat. And that Peko murdered Mahiru. They might love each other but that does not make them good people. Me: I actually like Peko more because she murdered Mahiru. Good riddance.
(in response to Lucahjin's review of D*ng*nr*np* 2) Let me be frank: I'm mostly just watching these for the executions these days, and that last one was pretty weak. Not exactly heartbreaking, but definitely disappointing.
(in response to the Cinema Snob's Let's Play of Christmas with a Capital C) Personally, I favor Happy Boxing Day Eve. :)
(in response to MihariofMabinogi's Let's Play of Chrono Trigger) I think that those people talking about how Robo speaks were referring to the fact that in the Japanese version, he speaks in kind of a weird mix of hiragana and katakana. The closest English equivalent would probably be having him put emphasis on the wrong syllables.
(in response to Phoebe Kalinowski's Let's Play of Pony Fantasy VI) I like to think that the ghost isn't so much "unwilling" to help after that point as "unable" - the Train's influence prohibits it from proceeding any further without being taken over by its consciousness.
(in response to Treble0096's Let's Play of Mother 3) Another mole cricket fact: They're apparently edible. If nothing else, I saw them listed in an article on strange canned food in Uncle John's Ahh-Inspiring Bathroom Reader.
(in response to Treble0096's Let's Play of Mother 3) Who would make wallpaper look like a filled bookcase? Probably someone pretending to be an intellectual.
(in response to Golden Book Video Killers XXV) The song that you said was about slavery clearly wasn't, because it mentioned Jenny being paid, with the implication that she could be paid more if she worked faster.
(in response to Autumchild's Let's Play of Breath of Fire III) I recently had a dream about using the dolphin's battle form as transportation in another game.
(in response to His Theme from Undertale: The Musical) I'm not normally the type to cry over fictional characters, but this song can come pretty drat close to making me do so.
(in response to SlimKirby's Let's Play of Lemmings) Me: If I'm not mistaken, I think almost every level without a unique tileset gets remixed at least once. SlimKirby: you are mistaken. There are definitely some levels that are unique beyond that classification. Me: That's why I said "almost". :)
(in response to Musical Hell's review of Happily Ever After) "There's only one Shadow Man!" (referring to Dr. Facilier) I'm guessing you've never played Mega Man 3, then?
(in response to Bobsheaux's review of The Swan Princess 2 & 3) Other commentator: I think all of these characters’ mothers were hamsters. Me: But did their fathers smell of elderberries?
(in response to Laws Broken: Dark Knight) Can Batman use self defense? Yes, because he's motherbleeping Batman.
(in response to Lucahjin's Let's Play of Suikoden II) Ah, Coronet. Jowston's leading producer of cheesy educational shorts.
(in response to MasaeAnela's Let's Play of Banjo-Kazooie) Clanker's Cavern is definitely the worst level in the game, but at least that means that it can only get better.
(in response to Top 6 Worst Characters from Good Cartoons) I know it's weird, but there is no South Park season 20. It just goes right from 19 to 21. Kind of like how there's no Leisure Suit Larry 4, I guess.
(in response to Bobsheaux's review of Miracle in Toyland) Other commentator: There is a woman with the word Nazi In her last name? Me: Ironically, Eskenazi is actually a Jewish surname. If you don't believe me, Google it.
(in response to Phoebe Kalinowski's Let's Play of Final Fantasy Tactics) If you're using Brett, better watch out for stray bullets. :)
(in response to The End of Time from Chrono Trigger: The Musical) "Unless time gets very desperate, in which case you could risk it." Anyone else have a feeling that this is foreshadowing?
(in response to the Media Hunters' review of Titanic: The Legend Goes On) Other commentator: The uncut version is somewhat better but that’s not saying much Me: Which is like saying that Death Valley is somewhat cooler than the surface of the sun.
(in response to the Cinema Snob's review of Gotti) Looks more like Ingeni-theta-us to me.
(in response to Phoebe Kalinowski's Let's Play of Illusion of Gaia) You say never to trust a man named Edward, but what about a blue engine named Edward?
As before, they literally are my comments unless specified.

What are the reactions Zelda, Link, Mipha, Sidon and Urbosa when their s/o is a merciless badass on the outside, but is an actual sweet and kind person when they are alone together?
OH YES SOMETHING QUICK AND EASY I CAN DO TO FINALLY PUT SOME ACTIVITY ON THIS BLOG
(Speaking of which, I’m sorry guys. School got very, very busy and I have a series of exams [but not finals, those are nearer to June] tomorrow, and a thing for my liberal arts class Wednesday I haven’t even started.)
and i’ll add on how they got together too just for fun
Zelda
Was at first cautious of this total badass, pulverizing bokoblins if they so much as looked at them
(Holy shit, Link, they’re scary???)
While out, she sees them a few times and decides to watch them for a while before she approached.
They caught her within five minutes.
She was very stuttery while she tried to explain and not mention the fact she found them pretty hot
They didn’t mind, but they were still very, very menacing (oh dear)
She was the one who eventually asked them out, and they were stark surprised
But totally said yes
It was towards their first anniversary she started noticing it
They were very thoughtful and such, and when their anniversary came around
They gave her a necklace with a pendant filled with little pressed flowers.
She was surprised, and nearly cried she was so happy
Let’s just say she very much enjoys when they’re alone, and her s/o is constantly the sweetest person she could ever meet.
Link
He suspected it from the start tbh
Mostly because they met when s/o had seen Wolf Link and squealed, rushing over and asking if they could pet the doggo and when Link said yes, they had a ball
Before that squeal, they had been pummeling a bokoblin to dust
Wolf Link totally agreed when s/o asked if they could travel together for a bit
Link didn’t argue, not at all
Especially when he thought they were kinda cute
Let’s just say, in their time spent together, Link watched many, many more bokoblins be pummeled to the ground
poor bokoblins
The two never really asked each other out, is a mutual, and silent, thing
Eventually, they were much sweeter
Holding his hand when he had a memory
Always making sure he had arrows or weapons
Getting him out of the radius of his bombs when he wasn’t paying attention
“Link, you have to be much more careful! You’re gonna give me a heart attack I swear!!”
and then they kiss him on the temple
He’s very happy for his simultaneously badass and sweet af s/o
Mipha
She found them defending a group of returning Zora aristocrats, after she had gone to help them back from a trip
She insisted they return to Zora’s Domain with the group, so that her father and herself could formally thank them
They didn’t complain, and were pretty okay with it
It was when they got such a big thanks that they were sheepish about all the praise
They decided they would hang around Zora’s Domain for a little while
Mipha would help them when they fought if she found them
and heal their wounds, to which they would blush and thank her profusely
After a while, they asked her out, and she was surprised, but said yes
They had seemed this serious badass
But why was this dinner so nice?
And why were they blushing pretty hard?
Oh, they were so cute
She kissed their cheek, and they fell to the ground, their knees were so weak
She laughed, and helped them up
Almost every date was like that afterward, with Mipha giggling at how bashful and sweet her badass s/o was
Oh my god they’re so cute guys, look at her cute lil s/o
People are looking at her like she’s crazy
That person is repeatedly stabbing a lizalfos and is covered in blood??
How are they cute?????
Okay whatever you say, princess, they are cute
(No one understands her)
Sidon
He watched them fight the Lynel near Zora’s Domain
And SPARE it
He quickly walked up to them afterward, because they had a few little wounds
When he asked why they spared it, with the wounded beast walking away to wherever it would heal itself
“Why kill a perfectly good enemy when you can earn it’s respect?”
Good point.
He mentioned how amazing they had done in the fight, explaining how clever they had been and what a great fighter they were
When they had dropped on the Lynel’s back and started striking the weak back
Amazing!!
They shrugged, saying it was nothing
Sidon disagrees, completely. Absolutely disagreeing.
He insists they come back to Zora’s Domain to be healed, and they’re sort of wary about it
“I don’t know, Prince, I haven’t been near society for a while.”
He insists, and they can’t argue with that face, even if they had just met him
They kind of.. cling to him the whole time, and stutter the whole time they’re being healed
They cling to Sidon, basically
Afterward, they’re still clinging
But asleep, because fighting Lynels is tiring, okay!
Ohmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocutehmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocutOhmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocutehmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocuteOhmygoddessthey’resocute
Sidon’s head right about now, with this cute lil warrior curled against him
He doesn’t know what to think of this badass cutie
He just knows he’s gonna love them to bits no matter what
Urbosa
She had seen them fighting a Molduga, alone, without bombs.
Just fighting a Molduga
With three lizalfos simultaneously trying to pulverize them
Oh my Hylia! She has to help!!
She goes as fast as her sand seal will take her, but once she gets there, s/o is wiping their brow as the Molduga fades to nothing
She goes to ask them how they did it, so quickly and efficiently
They trade techniques, and she takes them to Gerudo Town (if they’re male, they stay close to the wall, if female, she lets them stay in her home)
Either way, s/o doesn’t come around much, but when they do, them and Urbosa get closer and closer and eventually get together
They take out Yiga Clan members with two swings, one from each, sometimes a bash from a shield
It’s when they find a baby sand seal that s/o just melts.
Literally, they fall to the ground squealing about how cute that little baby is.
They don’t get too close, because the mom is giving them a death glare, but they squeal about it, and to Urbosa as well
She laughs the whole time, surprised how her s/o’s heart of stone was turned to mush so easily by a little baby sand seal
She tells them to calm down, but they do no such thing
A day after that they nonchalantly ask to borrow her sheikah slate so they can take some pictures of the desert
She agrees, and thinks nothing of it
Until she gets her sheikah slate back, and the memory is filled with a thousand pictures of sand seal pups
Oh goodness, she doesn’t know what to do with them

What makes a game a good game? I’ve been thinking about this, as well as what I have to offer to the greater conversations that are perpetually in motion Online. Taking a break from my usual outlet due to a huge feeling of apathy, I looked back towards my younger days just posting whatever it was on my mind on Tumblr and thought that was a time I was more satisfied. Not with a byline or great recognition but just kinda creating and putting it out there for nobody but myself to look over on a portfolio. So here are some thoughts on game criticism and media and the way they are used and could be used.
There is no such thing as an objective review. A great example of this is Objective Game Reviews that would post “Game reviews that are fact, not opinion.” An example from their “review” of RAGE:
One of the weapons in RAGE is the “wingstick,” a thrown blade weapon that can slice off the limbs of enemies and return to the player. Wingsticks can be steered through the air by moving the crosshair, and if they hit a hard surface or an armored enemy they can break. The player can craft wingsticks and alternative ammunition with parts looted from the world or purchased from vendors. Normal ammunition can be looted from enemies and refilled during a fight, whereas if alternative ammunition runs out the player must pause to craft more.
Another great example is Jim Sterling’s “review” of Final Fantasy XIII. Sterling did not like Final Fantasy XIII, giving it a Below Average, 4/10, for Destructoid on March 16, 2010. Of course reactions ranged from “whoa!” to “you didn’t even play the game.” In response, Sterling wrote up an objective review:
The videogame has graphics and sound. The graphics are seen with your eyes and the sound is heard by your ears. When you start the game the graphics and the sound will occur almost at the same time, letting you know that the game has started. There is also text which players can read.
Gamers who cry out against reviews that are not objective just disagree with what is being said, and don’t actually want an objective review that is just listing the things in the game as factual statements with no opinion on whether those things are good or bad. The same can be said of those who cry that a reviewer is “biased” towards a certain game/company/genre/etc. Most famously this is hurled towards Nintendo reviews for games that are perceived as bad but get good reviews “because Nintendo.” Sometimes it can be hard to not fall into this trap, as my reaction towards Skyward Sword getting hugely praised in 2011 was viewed as coming from people who couldn’t help but worship at the feet of Zelda and Nintendo.
The issue though, of universal praise for nearly every major title every year is something worth discussing. Both Nick Capozzoli, Vincent Kinian, and Tevis Thompson have talked about this before, the latter with a bit more hostility and other issues all his own, but the fact remains that there is a deep hole of variety when it comes to game reviews. This isn’t helped by the fact that more sites are beginning to realize the stupidity of assigning a score to a game, as if a number can accurately sum up a game’s worth and that elevating all games on the scale of numerical weight means games never meant to be compared to each other will be. See the meme of IGN’s review of Party Babyz Wii whose 7.5 was copy+pasted next to “better” games that got a lower review score for years.
Tevis links back the inability for game critics to come out and say Red Dead Redemption 2 sucks to the universally praised Bioshock Infinite of 2013, a game that mainstream media made multiple offerings to in the form of breathless praise, whereas others wrote out their criticisms on the periphery, best exemplified by the recent Critical Compilation on the game.
One critic he mentions is Videogamedunkey, a YouTuber who puts out short videos about whatever game is currently in the discourse. His slant is generally as an entertainment, comedian, wanting to make his viewers laugh, but also he talks about what he liked in the game and what he didn’t like. With Red Dead Redemption 2 Dunkey’s conclusion is the excess bears down on the game and he became as disillusioned as protagonist Arthur Morgan does with his mentor Dutch. It’s a fine video/review, though doesn’t nearly have the bite Tevis appears to want with regards to Red Dead Redemption 2, a bite I personally found in Jess Joho’s review of the game for Mashable which most aligned with my own feelings on the game and one he does list. Listing Dunkey also either shows Tevis’ ignorance or agreement with another Dunkey video: Game Critics, which provoked lots of conversations about people who review games for larger sites. Though, reading through Tevis’ piece, that video might be why he apparently looks up to Dunkey for good criticism. It is not like some of the issues Dunkey lists are wrong.
You’ve got your fanboys, your hobbyists, your escapists.  Your ‘objective’ reviewers, your consumer advisers, your spec hounds.  Your people pleasers, your twitter cheerleaders, your industry bootlickers.  Your never hate a game philosophers, your games are hard to make sympathizers, your but some people like it! tsk-tskers.  You’ve got old critics who’ve given up and young critics who’re getting there.  You’ve got so many internet professionals and professional apologists.  The tired, the self-censored, the players of the game.  None mutually exclusive.  All guardians of the status quo.
I think the real issue here is that the required work to put into really proving this sort of thing is massive. Reading and sorting the reviews based on site and author, taking into account Twitter posts that extend the conversation into an endless timeline unsearchable by keyword due to the often vague nature of criticizing criticism publicly. There have probably been hundreds of tweets in response to just Tevis’ blog as well as games criticism in general. It seems like the conversation about reviewers, their role, their work, their compensation, their method, is repeated ad nauseum monthly. Games media loves to talk about games media. I mean here I am, someone much lower than those I’ve mentioned, talking about it myself.
This sort of work loses the point, about what is it that makes a game good? Objective reviews are useless, subjective reviews are useful. What makes a subjective opinion worth reading? What makes the work their talking about worth something? These are the sorts of things that have many answers.
Some small things to get out of the way are some more useless things, specifically the belief that a 10/10 means a game is perfect, is a belief that is hard to get around despite how simple it is. A 10/10 just means it is the pinnacle of what games can achieve and others should be more like this one. What constitutes a 10/10 is, as everything is, up to personal taste. For myself, 10/10’s practically don’t exist since no piece of art is without flaw. We are all humans. Remember before when I said assigning numerical value is stupid? Well given the circumstances of Metacritic, assigning a numerical score might not actually be a dumb thing when it's used as a statement, a punctuation at the end of your text. If Tevis used numerical scores in his reviews and got onto Metacritic he would be able to wield them much more usefully as a way to vocalize dissent through metascore than as just a page of text most will pass by without reading.
Phrases such as “Isn’t for everyone” or “not a perfect [x].” are also useless in terms of criticism. Not every game is made for everyone or could even accomplish that if it were the intention. That phrase can be applied to any and every game and is therefore useless. As mentioned before, no piece of art is perfect, so simply stating that as some sort of qualifier that, “I like this but it’s far from perfect,” is such a pathetic qualifier that should never be used.
A review worth reading is one that brings a point, a perspective, an idea that you didn’t have before about a piece of art and put it in your head. It also has to have supporting evidence for its conclusions, the sort of Philosophy 102 cogent argumentative qualities that blew my mind as a college kid. Given that we have already had decades of consumer grade reviews: ones that break a game into categories and tie them together into a qualitative statement at the end, that we would be able to move on from that into something different. This includes the derogatorily described “blog” reviews, ones that are less about whether or not the graphics never stuttered and more about whether or not a personal connection was made to a specific aspect of a game, whether large or incidental. These are the kind of conversations that bring something new than whether or not the guns sounded satisfactory. This is the sort of conversation that differentiates critical YouTubers like Raycevick from Noah Caldwell-Gervais. Both put out videos on the recent Wolfenstein series and both took very different approaches to what they wanted to say about the game. Raycevick was more focused on the mechanics, the variation of the map, the way it linked together its setpieces. Noah was more interested in what the game had to say about America, Nazism, and the ways to resist and cope with a fallen country. The former might make for a good quick recap of what the games are and what they do in a input-output sense (think right-trigger, left-trigger of Call of Duty), but it's the latter that does the digging into what the game is beyond whether the shooting was good or the stealth sections not too frustrating.
When ascertaining whether or not a game is good there are some easy questions to ask. Did I make an emotional connection? Was that emotional connection cheap (say showing a dog dying) or earned? Does the game have something to say about a topic and do I agree with or disagree with its conclusion about said topic? Did I enjoy spending time within the game and why? Was this a worthwhile spending of my time?
Mechanic’s based criticism is also valid, but personally less interesting. Does it matter if Anthem has good shooting and flying if the things surrounding it are bland? This is where subjectivity again comes in. So far, out of all the shlooters released, I’ve found that you can have the most mechanically satisfying circle, but if that is surrounded by mediocrity it doesn’t matter, it’s a bad game. I don’t care whether or not the shooting felt good in a game, I want to know if the things surrounding those mechanics is worth investing time into. Red Dead Redemption 2 had a rote shooting gallery mechanic underlying most all of its missions, and that couldn’t be saved by the characters and world surrounding it which left me feeling like I had wasted my time come the credits. Of course many felt the opposite, and its the ways we craft the arguments and explanations for why we felt that way that make a good criticism. A review is likely not going to and not meant to convince you that a game you hate is good, but it should at least allow you to understand why the author felt that way about it.
Something that has cropped up recently when covering games is the conditions under which they are made. As we, hopefully, work our way towards a labor revolution not only in games but across all aspects of culture, we have become more aware of the way corporations exploit the lower class workforce. AAA development means overwork, let’s not even get started on the lie of the 40 hour workweek, underpaid, and stress that routinely leads to the end of careers. Rockstar management came out and boasted about their 100 hour work weeks in New York Magazine, which was then qualified as just the writing team, and then was further qualified by a Kotaku report (that has been the norm) about the conditions under which Red Dead Redemption 2 was created. The question became whether or not this would affect reception of the game. It didn’t.
I sometimes struggled to enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2’s most impressive elements because I knew how challenging—and damaging—some of them must have been to make. Yet just as often, I found myself appreciating those things even more, knowing that so many talented people had poured their lives into crafting something this incredible.
The game currently has a 97 on Metacritic, there was only one “mixed” scored review, and even those who didn’t give scores offered only a slight hand wringing at the way the game was created in their text. Kotaku’s section ends with a shrug, “yeah the people who made this were exploited but I’ll be damned if that exploited work isn’t impressive.” It’s useless to have in the text as it leads nowhere, and the question of, “was their labor worth it?” should always be answered with a resounding NO. We are attempting to unionize the industry in order to keep exploitation from happening. What a fucking useless gesture to contemplate whether or not someone spending weeks crunching was “worth it.” It’s the sort of thing Tevis called out in his post,
They couch any troublesome truths in acceptable gamerese, outline all possible caveats, neuter any rhetorical force, maybe dress it up for their academic buddies while they’re at it.  Suddenly everything is ‘messy’ or ‘complicated’ or ‘full of fascinating contradictions’.  Sure, they’re ‘frustrated’, even ‘disappointed’, but they’re still rooting for the game.  And always with due deference to their audience.  It’s not for me but it’s cool if you and it’s totally just a taste thing now don’t get me wrong now I know what you’re thinking now I’m not saying that, y’all.
Some of this comes from the fact that games media is largely made up of, and rooted in, enthusiasts: people who do it out of a love for the media itself. This may best be exemplified by a recent (now deleted) tweet from Brian Altano, video host/producer at IGN Entertainment:
I've been working in the video game industry since 2007 and I don't think I've ever heard more than three people legitimately call themselves "game journalists" without being sarcastic, ironic, or putting it in air quotes while laughing about it. That's... not an actual thing.
Brian has never been someone you go to for criticism or news, the things journalists do. He exists to make you laugh, to entertain you. Going to Brian to determine whether or not you should buy a game will end with “Yes!” or “Maybe try it out.” Brian exemplifies the type of critic Tevis decries in his opening paragraph. He isn’t a critic, but he does represent a larger audience than critics do. There isn’t a real large audience for the type of work done at Bullet Points Monthly, or else their Patreon would be much higher than it currently is. People go to websites like IGN and GameSpot to have their already convinced minds reinforced that what they like is Important. This is why there are multiple articles whenever a new trailer or piece of information comes out about the next Star Wars or Marvel movie or Game of Thrones. These things are big so we have to talk about them and reinforce their importance, further enriching the pockets of corps like Disney, whose billion dollar company is immoral with its continued existence.
The roots of game criticism comes from the game magazines and websites of the 1990’s. Work that existed to be read and shared not because they did a good job interrogating the things they proclaimed to love but because they were entertaining to read and reinforced your love, whether it be Nintendo, Sega, Sony, or Microsoft. The same sort of circular reinforcement continues in the larger sites today, which is why AAA games will never fall below a favorable average on numerical compilation sites, with exceptions of course. Not that this sort of status quo is unique to just games media. Noam Chomsky, in the book On Western Terrorism, mentions how the media in the West give no time to dissenting opinion,
If you want to say that China is a totalitarian state you can say it, you know. If you want to say something like the U.S. is the biggest terrorist state in the world, they are not going to stop you, but you do sound like you are from Neptune, because you are not given the next five minutes to explain it. So you have two choices, to either repeat propaganda, repeat standard doctrine, or sound like you are a lunatic.
I hope you’ll forgive me for likening the universal love of game critics to the propaganda machine of western news media, as it's comically different in terms of importance, but the similarity is there. People who don’t conform to the generally accepted opinion on a game are labeled contrarians just looking to make a buck off a different opinion. Those who are praising Breath of the Wild are just Nintendo hacks. Those who call into question aspects of God of War are just SJW cucks.
Michael Thomsen touches on this status quo as well in his review of Jason Schreier’s book Blood, Sweat, and Pixels for The New Inquiry,
In these times, the most important task of game journalism isn’t to serve a public interest but to ensure that fans can continue to identify some version of themselves in the games they have played, and ensure future releases will allow them access to even deeper levels of self-expression and understanding. In playing the next game, owning the newest console, having an opinion on the latest patch, we feel like we can become stabler versions of ourselves, all at the cost of clearing out space—both mental and financial—for open-ended consumption of a form without any purpose beyond this increasingly tautological pleasure. This process is necessarily dehumanizing. Games matter because you are here to play them, and you remain here to play them because they matter.
We can do better, as being human is to strive to be more than we are (yeah its a corny Star Trek clip but that episode fucks me up). I think it should be obvious that better games criticism is probably pretty low in terms of importance when you look at other things, but I do think it has influence on creating and leading conversations, the kind that lead towards stronger rights for laborers and are more critical of the output of corporations who seek only to deepen their own pockets.

My personal headcannon for Vaati
You don’t have to agree. If anything, friendly debate encourages ideas.
So, this might get lengthy, not sure yet.
So, just gonna say this right now. I'm not making excuses for the things Vaati has done. He is a legitimate Villain and has earned the right to be feared by his opponents. I'm simply sad that so very few people have seemed to consider this angle (I think I found 1 vague comic). With that being said, let's get started.
I honestly don't think that Vaati had meant for things to happen as they did. And I'm not just talking about being defeated. Wishes are powerful things and we were never told the specifics of his, only the results. And as many a cautionary tale has taught us, wording is EVERYTHING when it comes to wishes. I think our impatient rage ball had no idea just what he signed himself up for.
I think his wish might have been to no longer be prey.
Which, for a minish, is a completely understandable wish. There is literally nothing that couldn't kill them with very little effort. The problem with this wish is that it is extremely non-specific. And there are very few things that are less likely to be prey than, say, an apex predator like a demon.
From there, it's actually very easy to see how this would progress. Now a newly made demon, his confidence soars but part of him still knows he's vulnerable and, therefore seeks to gather more power, specifically one of the only powers still capable of taking him out.
Also, the fact that he didn't just slaughter those in his way says a lot more about who he was and who he became than I think a lot of people might realize. Being a Mage with the power of wind means he's actually far more terrifying than Nintendo is likely to ever show us because of the rating system. Air is everywhere, which means nearly unlimited resources for him to manipulate at will. Some of the off the bat ways he could have just ended Link, Zelda, and even Ezlo include but are not limited to: creating an air-vacuum around their faces causing suffocation, expanding the air in their lungs and forcing them to explode in their chest, and even turning pebbles into sniper bullets via wind manipulation. And that's just assuming he didn't care if they actually suffered and was going for efficiency. Then again, if Nintendo hadn't nerfed him from the get-go, we as the players would not have had a chance in hell.
Vaati himself even admits that his personality has done a 180. I believe his exact words are “Because of you I have gone from being a meek, miniscule nothing to the greatest sorcerer alive.” And, let’s be honest, what we find out from Ezlo is subject to bias because, chances are, Vaati didn’t confide in him. If he had, and Ezlo still hadn’t seen this coming, then he is clearly not nearly wise man that everyone tries to make him out to be. For all we know, Vaati’s facination with “the cruelty of man” might very well have been their capability for coming out on top despite being smaller and weaker than the monsters they face. Not to say that men aren’t cruel, they most certainly are. Also consider that some of his other examples of how not-prey behave aren’t all that much better. Cat’s and birds sometimes play with their kills. Also, this might just be the supernatural fan in me, but that kind of language sounds an aweful lot like someone who’s had the very nature of their soul changed and/or possessed. Again, I’m not saying Vaati is innocent. Far from it, If he had been possessed, I’d say enough of his own personality remained to effectively say HE assimilated IT, not the other way around.
Now, to look at the actions he took with this line of thinking in mind:
He cursed Ezlo and left him relatively unharmed in a safe environment. Ezlo was only put in danger by his own actions of chasing after Vaati. I think (and you can feel free to disagree, I encourage it) he liked Ezlo enough not to kill but feared his interference enough to curse him (at least, that's my take on it). His actions only became overtly harmful after Ezlo had shown up again with what he might think is a lacky, attempting to stop him.
He cursed, not killed, Zelda. He recognized her, not Link, as a threat from the get-go and made a move to neutralize her, but made no moves to kill her until it became a necessity of getting what he sought after. I don’t think he gave a damn about her after that, one way or another.
As for Link, I think he honeslty hadn’t cared about the brat with a shield until he became a problem. Had Link stayed out of it, the only victims might very well have been Zelda and the King. He didn’t want to rule. He only wanted power. He wanted to be THE scariest thing there so that, perhaps, he no longer had to fear anything. Of course, most of this becomes a moot point around the end of Minish Cap when Vaati goes through multiple transformations and allows his rage to consume him, fully becoming a demon with the full intent of destroying this brat and everything he holds dear.
Well, maybe. The whole kidnapping maidens thing is suspect. Yes, Nintendo did it because it was an easy, classic story. At the same time, though, when you think about his first romp as an OP sorcerror, you’s think he’d immediately take out the kid with the sword who looks a little too familiar. Nope. He takes the girls, who, if I’m not mistaken, are shrine maidens. Shrine maidens with the specific job of keeping him sealed. Keeping them within sight at all times. He knows these girls are capable of sealing him again should he be overpowered and keeping them where he can watch and eliminate them at any time could have very well been his strategy, hidden behind insinuation and inuendo. Because, even if the brat defeats him again, with these girls gone, he might think he still has a chance of not being seal away again.
Well, that’s all I got. Feel free to debate and talk to me about this. I love evolving headcannons.
