tis missin techno hours it seems
#cw grief#vent in tags#man i started watching breakin bad for the first time recently w my gf and like great show#but boy was i not prepared for all the cancer stuff. we had to stop watching one night because of how hard it was for me to watch#its just so hard to think about him going through that. like obviously#thats why the dedication by the sfa still hurts to even think about#and thinking about it all it makes sense to me why he never told us how bad it really was#i was. already so so worried about him all the time especially those last few months#even though he never gave us any reason to believe it was getting worse or anythin like that#so i cant imagine how badly id have been worrying if id known the extent of it all back then#and im grateful in a way for it. cause it gave me the chance during that last year we had him to really just love and appreciate#i just watched and rewatched vods and videos and i was so happy and so grateful to have him around.. im still grateful. cause hes not gone#i think he wanted it to be like that? i think he didnt want anyone mourning him before he left#dunno im just missing him and thinking of him as i often do. its just one of those Its All Painfully Real Lol moments#i sometimes have legitimate fleeting thoughts where im like. so. im gonna wake up tomorrow and someones gonna have created a cure for death#and hes gonna be back right. or like. for half a second my brain goes Cool so when does he come back?#its real strange#i think about his friends and family alot i find myself wondering if it hurts so bad for me then how are they even getting by?#but grief is always grief and grieving people are grieving people so maybe we arent as different as i think#yknow#whenever theres a meetup or something like that theres always this awful ache. this ringing in my ears#and it says. like. christ this is hard to type out.#it says ‘techno never got to do this’… or ‘sbi never got to do this’…#and its not a sentiment of jealousy or anger or even envy…. just grief#it’s just pure pure grief it’s just loss and it makes the whole world feel hollow#but i suppose that’s just the world without him.? everything echoes louder than it should#it seriously makes me feel sick when i think about that. augh. last hope we all had for an sbi meetup at vidcon#and how phil said they asked but techno. said he wouldnt make it that long basically. i think about that too much#i wont ever remember that vidcon as anything but the last few days of bliss before we found out#gonna rewatch some of his videos and sleep now. hearing his voice always makes me smile ❤️ goodnight

First off, thank you for tagging me @moondal514 . This looks fun! It’s insane to me that anyone would consider me a mutual but I’m happy about it sksksks
currently reading: Nothing in particular? There’s a bunch of books I want to read but my brain is SO not on board with me branching out in the book direction rn. I did finally cave and read Son Nefes in full yesterday, even if that is only book-adjacent (It’s really good. If you’re an AFTG fan and haven’t read it, you should. Even if you technically already know all it says from various posts floating around).
Fic wise, it’s whatever @jtl-fics has going on with Fluent Freshman. It’s just prime comedy complete with memes, 11/10.
favorite color: Midnight Blue. I will sing my love for it from the rooftops.
last song: Take Me Back To Eden by Sleep Token. I’m frothing at the mouth about the entire album, but the title song in particular is rotating in my mind like a rotisserie chicken.
last show: I haven’t watched anything in so long I literally can’t remember. @statistical-improbabilities my beloved is trying to bully me into Shadow and Bone and The Good Place and I’ve had my eye on The Legend Of Vox Machina since it came out so my next pick is most likely gonna be one of those.
currently watching: YouTube. If anything, it’s YouTube. I cycle through video essays, Hollow Knight content, Critical Role VODs and the YouTube channel of the animal guy from TikTok like nobody’s business
last movie: Probably my nth rewatch of Howl’s Moving Castle about a year ago (oh god, what is time?) I really wanna go see Across The Spiderverse—the first movie was SO GOOD. Also, Everything Everywhere All At Once when I get around to it (can you tell how I’m always late to trends?)
sweet/spicy/savory: People here expect me to CHOOSE??
currently working on: My beloved monster child of a WIP that is shaping up to be absolutely MASSIVE. It’s an Andreil soulmate AU with telepathy because I am forever true to my brand of ‘what does it do to a person if they have mental superpowers, would that be fucked up or what?’. I passed 110k on this yesterday. It’s still potentially less than half the story. Save me.
current obsession: Take Me Back To Eden by Sleep Token. Ooooh my god. I started listening into this album a couple days ago but sat down today to listen to the entire thing in its proper intended order and. I have ascended into a whole other plane of existence. I am experiencing emotions in colors previously only known to mantis shrimp. I can see my Spotify Wrapped of this year going completely down the drain as this album becomes the only thing I listen to for the entire rest of the year, on repeat. I wish this was an exaggeration. I am dead serious. Sorry to my friends on discord who will be subjected to my lethal case of Not Shutting The Fuck Up About It for the next while <3
6 mutuals: I have no idea at which point following a blog makes that person become a mutual. All I know is that @statistical-improbabilities @i-think-i-lost-my-phone and @swamp-world are legally obliged to put up with my bullshit. @dumbenby I’m roping you into this too <3
Anyone who sees this and feels like doing it (or sees it and wonders why the hell I didn’t tag them because we’re obviously mutuals (I’m sorry)), feel free to take this as your invitation to go ahead and/or yell at me <3

11, 17 and 21 for the Hermitcraft ask game! :D
Wheee, an ask jingling away in my letterbox! Thankyee :D
11 - favourite hermit to listen to?
I feel like this question has a lot of overlap with "which hermits do I watch live", lol. Joe is definitely up there, with Xisuma close behind bc he's the first person (not even hermit!) I ever watched on Twitch. HUGE fan of Cub's & xB's very distinctive ways of speaking too!
17 - have any episodes you constantly go back to? which ones?
Ok I've definitely mentioned this before but EVERYBODY GO WATCH S7'S APRIL 5TH 2021 HHH STREAM. I know it's not an episode but I've watched it over a dozen times it's just SUCH a delight from start to end and there's SO MANY HERMITS.... Remind me to make a full post abt why I love this stream sm + links to whatever vods I can find bc dear gourd the comfort stream of all time. :D
In terms of episodes I go back to? Uuuhhh Joehills S1 Ep. 35 "Reasonable Expectations", bc it's short and an excellent joement and there's so many videos to watch I don't often go back to rewatch specific ones it turns out ^^;
21 - favourite hermit interaction?
Beef & literally Anyone who came to visit him during the almost-year he spent out in that ocean developing the TCG. It was so great, ppl would show up to press their HP / attack stat buttons or drop off materials & Beef would immediately be like "omg company?? People??? 🥺 Hello hi welcome let me show you around I just finished 5 more cards here they are wAIT DID I LOCK THEM ok it's fine I'm fine my world is naught but maps and carpets and the flat flat surface of the sea, here is your card do you like your card please play my card game when it's done. I love you." And then everyone DID play his card game! And everyone loves it and it's still taking over the server now and I'm so happy for him. Beef episodes this season are so good ^^

what technoblade means to me
this still feels so surreal. its so strange to know that one of the most impactful content creators, and people in general to me has passed away.
i only joined the dream smp/mcyt fandom a year a ago. lore was really daunting to get into, and one of the only reasons i kept up watching old lore was definitely technoblade. watching his doomsday streams and daring escapes from the butcher army made me feel like i was truly watching something cinematic and dramatic in a way that no other lore did. he's the reason i stuck around at first. he's the reason i have this blog and have been able to meet so many great people.
he became the most interesting character and cc to me quickly, his sense of humour just perfectly fit with mine. i binged all his skywars, skyblock, and potato war videos. like i got home from school and only watched techno videos till i went to sleep it was actually a problem to my schoolwork at a point. i watched his old smp earth vods and minecraft monday tournaments. i was so consumed that a non mcyt irl knew enough about techno to buy me a pig plushie for christmas (of course named techno). here's some techno plush content to hopefully make you smile
Tumblr media
my mental health took a big dive from it's already kinda shit starting point around november 2021 and up until recently. one day, the one year anniversary of my friend's suicide, the only thing that made me smile a little bit and took my mind off of things was rewatching techno's potato war videos. i will always remember that. i suffered from a lot of insomnia in that period, and for a very long time the only way i could reliably go to sleep was putting on a long techno stream and waiting. it always worked. he was my healthy coping mechanism. it sounds like a joke or something, saying 'i watched technoblade just to feel something' but yeah, i did and i still do. i know that his videos or streams will make me laugh, or put me in awe and appreciation of his skill and dedication, or that i will be transported to a story where this decked out giant pig guy singlehandedly takes on the world and always wins. his content has served as such an important escape for me, i would have been so much more miserable without him. im so so thankful. i hope he understood even a fraction of the impact he had. techno accompanied me through my darkest times, he was joy for me.
the passion that this man had for everything he did was immense, his dedication inspires me to this day. his skill was unmatched because of that, and i will always consider him the greatest of all time at the craft. he displayed such kindness towards his friends and fans alike, i try to treat my friends how he treated his. his wit and humour brought life to everything he did. he managed to make hundreds of bedwars and skywars rounds each be interesting and memorable thanks to the strength of his personality. also he murdered orphans. an all around great guy.
god when i saw that notification. i saw 'so long nerds' and immediately my mind was jumping to conclusions. oh, so he was taking a break from youtube. maybe he had to go through with the amputation after all and couldn't continue with minecraft. i didnt even consider the reality as an option. when his dad started to speak my heart dropped to the floor. my love is going out to his family and his friends, what theyre going through is just horrible and it must be exacerbated by having to go through it so publicly. techno deserved a long and happy life, but it gives me comfort and i hope it does for everyone that he said he would choose to be technoblade all over again.
i really dont know if there is anything after this life, but i believe that the people we love stay with us and it is our duty to keep them alive in our memory. i also know that it is necessary for a while, but unhealthy to wallow in the grief. this is sad. this is terrible. but techno brought so much joy, and i just want to remember that. its gonna be a challenge to get to that point, but he deserves to be remembered like that. for you the world, techno.

Ayo curious anon here- im gonna rewatch rewatch the vod and take note of every single punch and why it appears to have happened then we can compare notes. Also i am interested in your opinion on relaxx's post :0 also if u want a vid rec i know a cool vid where someone replied to a dream apologist who;;; excused exile but it also brings up some interesting points :0
alright, well good luck! my focus was more on the fact that c!dream didn't start punching first until the very end (he did punch back a few times but that's not what i was tracking), and c!tommy was punching him the entire time beforehand, so if you count more "first punches" for the very ending i don't think that would matter that much, but if you have something beforehand that's a discrepancy on my part feel free to tell me :]
i'm not going to watch it for myself because i'm afraid they'd generalize dream apologists based on that one person and make a lot of assumptions that don't apply to me + use possibly insulting, emotionally charged language as a result, but if there are good points you'd like to debate about feel free to send those!
as for relaxx post ( link to the original ) i have a reply written up with my opinions, so yeah;
/dsmp /rp
i was going to put in a first part saying how this is biasedly worded and insinuating that c!tommy was somehow protecting his family by standing up against c!dream during the negotiation (which really was the other way around, him being reckless and endangering them) but i don’t wanna seem aggressive or condescending so i just deleted that. they have emotions about c!tommy and they see him in a certain light thanks to that and i respect that enough not to bother them.
the majority of this is about c!dream anyway, which is more my playing field.
“it didn’t even work because dream didn’t care about spirit”
basic misinterpretation by someone not knowledgeable about the character besides watching c!tommy’s pov. obviously this is not true in the slightest, c!dream has proven time and time again that spirit’s leather is what he cares about the most right after his friends - he traded one of the discs for it, and he had sentimental attachment to the horse. him saying later that he doesn’t is not him revealing anything, or maybe even lying (there’s different interpretations of that scene - in my opinion it’s more of a decision than anything).
of course i do agree that c!dream is manipulative. the reasons for that can be debated, but he is. i wouldn’t call him a “master manipulator” - that’s reserved for people who not even the audience notices are being manipulative despite the obvious red flags, but c!dream is very much manipulative - he’s just the only one people notice, which isn’t really pro of him /j
“dream tells tommy he cut off all attachments, he abandons and stops talking to his friends”
he did stop talking to them… after they abandoned him. small mistake, big difference in the way we see the character.
“he tells tommy among other things that he “does it all because it’s fun and he’s playing with his food” “no, i just like to cause chaos” “i’m doing this so you can have an origin story. the perfect hero origin” “i can make us immortal together!” we don’t have a way to confirm or deny these as true/false since we don’t know what dream’s thinking, but. sadly they appear to line up with his actions.”
no, it doesn’t. it doesn’t line up at all with the way he talks to… anyone else, or with his character in general. it’s an intimidation tactic to cover up his true intentions and make himself out to be more of a threat because he wants people to be afraid of him - that’s what gives him power, basically. threats and ultimatums are what gives him the most control over others even if he has no real power, so it’s important people fear what he could do or what he would be willing to do, rather than what he actually will.
“sapnap actually visited dream in prison and dream seemed to care more about using sapnap to get to ranboo then sapnap himself. ouch.”
have they. have they not watched the video where c!dream spends the first like 98% writing in a book about how he wants c!sapnap and c!george to come visit him again and trying to convince c!sapnap he can get better and be let out and meet again? where he only asks for c!sapnap to deliver the message like half a minute before the end? where are they getting this info from? because this is outrageously incorrect, i’m sorry but what even lead you to that conclusion?
“i am actually fully on board with the idea that dream lied, and that he does still miss and care about his friends! i consider often (because i like angst lol)! when dream finally gets his pov, we might learn about this. because we don’t know what he’s thinking. he could be missing them every second for all we know! it could all be one master plan to make them like him, or save them, or something. dream is innocent until proven guilty. as far as we can tell, he wasn’t lying. and he did cut off his friends.”
i think from everything that’s happened before and after the scene it is obvious he does in fact care about them. he did emotionally isolate himself, he did “cut himself off” (moreso by not reaching out than actually doing anything for himself), yes, but that doesn’t mean he wanted to or that it didn’t hurt him.
“even if it turns out he actually loves them, he still treated them awfully by abandoning them as he did”
i… don’t remember that happening, i’ll be honest. they left him and they never came back, so it’s much more on them than it is on c!dream that their relationship fell apart, although he technically could’ve tried harder. however, that’s only c!sapnap and c!george - he still proved to care about c!punz during before the finale, and even during the prison he still shows attachment to c!techno.
i could give examples of him caring about his friends, and will if asked (that’d take a while because there is a lot of canon evidence but honestly it’d just make me very happy so i wouldn’t mind), but in general it’s not that difficult to see that he… does care about people, as hard as that is to believe, and yes, he did hurt them indirectly because it hurts to see people who used to be important to you spiral to the point of doing terrible things, but i wouldn’t say he made c!sapnap feel terrible, especially during the prison visit when c!dream is very obviously Going Through It.
also i highly dislike the anon’s attitude. there’s no need to be that aggressive, like what the hell dude. everyone can have their own interpretations and opinions. in my eyes, this is sort of biased and partially incorrect, but maybe let people exist on the internet.

Stages of becoming part of the Dream SMP Fandom:
Denial:
“This amazing animatic storyline from SAD-ist cannot be from a bunch of Minecraft Youtubers and Twitch Streamers.”
Anger:
“Okay, okay! Finally. The story’s finally done, I will never watch anymore minecraft videos like this-”
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE STORY’S NOT DONE?!”
Bargaining:
“Okay, just a few more VODS and I will never watch any more, I just gotta wait until their story arcs are done, I’m not a Minecraft Youtuber fan, I’m not watching it, I’m just here for the storyline!”
Depression:
“I have sat here, for seven hours, by choice, watching eight different perspectives of the same video. For what? Why am I doing this? It’s not like the plot changed! I’m only rewatching this for the 10 minutes of unseen talking between these people. What... why is my life like this?”
Acceptance:
“You know what? This is top-quality content. They’re super funny and the family dynamics are so cute and the storylines are all so intriguing. I don’t think there is much content like this on Youtube and Twitch, this is really cool and original, and the fandom seems so talented and nice, and everyone’s so supportive of each other... I’m a Dream SMP fan.”
-------------------------
Uh, hey guys? I guess this my official hello to the fandom. I’m a fic writer and am currently writing a lot of Dream SMP Drabbles. Anyway, I’m so happy to be here and it’s great to meet ya’ll-
And to my followers: sorry I’ve been posting a lot of Dream SMP content, I’m just really into that right now, but I promise my love for Sanders Sides hasn’t swayed, and there are plenty more Sanders Sides fics on the way. <3

sapnap, ponk, and hbomb for the ask game!!
sapnap: what is your favourite part about watching the smp?
honestly the way its like... given? the format? the fact its ongoing and has SO many perspectives makes my hyperfocus go BRRRRRR at all times so I can’t like. get bored of it bc there's always something NEW and MORE.
really tho beyond that, my favorite part is the fandom around it. the artists and writers who make it more than just block game rp, and the fans who liveblog and theorize about it all. without the fandom, I doubt id be anywhere close as invested as I am
ponk: which part of the smp made you feel the happiest?
probably just bc it happened recently and thus its on my brain, but the season two finale FUCKED ME UPPP in such a good way. i was liveblogging it to a friend over discord and at one point I was stimming so fucking hard I couldn't type. mans was just keysmashing as a stim to cope. even afterwards I kept bouncing and smiling like crazy thinking back to it. i need happy endings and god season 2 finale fuckin hit that mark
hbomb: a stream you find yourself rewatching all the time
confession time..... i don't watch many of the streams over and over FJDSKLFJKL. hell, most of the time I barely even watch the full streams?? i just get the Vibes from my dash fjdkslfj. if I rewatch something a lot, its usually a youtube video instead of a vod. stuff like tommy’s modded series, wilbur’s 100 player videos, techno’s potato war, etc. wait a second, I know one vod i watched a few times: quackity playing jackbox after techno’s execution

The Package.
As the bonkers genre thrill-ride Shadow in the Cloud blasts into the new year, writer and director Roseanne Liang unpacks her love of Terminator 2, watching Chloë Grace Moretz’s face for hours, and the life lesson she learned from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s Cheng Pei-Pei.
Roseanne Liang’s TIFF Midnight Madness winner Shadow in the Cloud landed with a blast of fresh genre energy on VOD platforms on New Year’s Day. It’s A-class action in a B-grade body, cramming plenty into its taut 83 minutes, including: a top-secret package, a freakish gremlin, a hostile bunch of Air Force dudes, outrageous stunts, dogfights and a fake wartime PSA that feels remarkably real.
Throughout, the camera is focused mostly on one face—Chloë Grace Moretz’s, playing British flight officer Maude Garrett—as she tackles all of the above from a claustrophobic ball turret hanging under a B-17 Flying Fortress, on a classified mission over the Pacific Ocean during World War II.
While the film’s tonal swings are confusing to some, schlock enthusiasts and genre lovers on Letterboxd have embraced the film’s intentionally outlandish sensibility, which “makes excellent use of its genre mash to create an unpredictable, guilty pleasure,” says Mirza. Fajar writes that “it felt like the people involved in this project knew how ridiculous it is and gave a hundred and ten percent to make it work. Someday, it will become a cult classic.” Mawbey agrees: “It really goes off the rails in all the best ways during the final third, and the last couple of shots are just perfect.”
Tumblr media
Chloë Grace Moretz and her top-secret package in ‘Shadow in the Cloud’.
To most of the world, Liang is a so-called “emerging” director, when in fact, the mother-of-two, born in New Zealand to Chinese parents, has been at this game for the past two decades. She has helmed a documentary and a romantic drama, both based on her own marriage; a 2008 short called Take 3, which preceded Hollywood’s current conversation about representation and harassment; and Do No Harm, the splatter-tastic 2017 short in which her technical chops and fluid feel for action were on full display, and, as recorded in multiple Letterboxd reviews, established her as one to watch.
Do No Harm scored Liang valuable Hollywood representation, whereupon producer Brian Kavanaugh-Jones brought Shadow in the Cloud to her, thinking she might connect with the material. “It did connect with me on a level that is very personal,” Liang tells me. “As a woman of color, as a mother who juggles a lot.” She says Kavanaugh-Jones then went through the process of removing original writer Max Landis from the project. “He felt that Max was not a good fit for this project, or for how we like to run things. We like to be respectful and courteous and kind to each other…”
In several interviews, Liang has said she’s comfortable with film lovers choosing not to watch Shadow in the Cloud based on Landis’s early involvement. What she’s not comfortable with is her own contribution—and that of her cast and crew—being erased. While WGA rules have his name attached firmly to the project, the credit belies the reality: his thin script, reportedly stretched out to 70 pages by using a larger-than-usual font, was expanded and deepened by Liang and her collaborators.

That team includes editor Tom Eagles, Oscar nominated for Jojo Rabbit, actor Nick Robinson (the titular Simon in Love, Simon) and Beulah Koale, a star of the Hawaii Five-Oh series. The opening newsreel was created by award-winning New Zealand animation studio Mukpuddy, after a small test audience got weirded out by the sight of a gremlin in a war film, despite well-documented WWI and WWII gremlin mythology. It’s an unnecessary but happy addition. The cartoon style was inspired by Private Snafu, a series of WWII educational cartoons scripted by none other than Dr. Seuss and directed by Looney Tunes legend Chuck Jones.
But the film ultimately hangs on Chloë Grace Moretz, who overcame cabin fever to drive home an adrenaline rush of screen craft, in which the very limits of what’s humanly possible in mid-air are tested (in ways, it must be said, that wouldn’t be questioned if it were Tom Cruise in the role). Liang would often send directions to Moretz’s ball turret via text, while her cast members delivered live dialogue from an off-set shipping container rigged with microphones. “I just never got sick of Chloë’s face and I’ve watched her hundreds, if not thousands of times. You feel her, you are her, she just engages you in a way that a huge fighting scene might not, if it’s not designed well. Giant empty spectacle is less interesting than one person in one spot, sometimes.”
Ambitious and nerdy about film in equal measure, it’s clear there’s much more to come from Liang, and I’m interested in what her most valuable lesson has been so far. Turns out, it’s a great story involving Chinese veteran Cheng Pei-Pei (Come Drink With Me’s Golden Swallow, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s Jade Fox), whose film training includes a tradition of remaining on set throughout filming.
Tumblr media
Roseanne Liang on the set of ‘Shadow in the Cloud’.
That meant that, during filming of Liang’s My Wedding and Other Secrets, Cheng would stay on set when she wasn’t required. “In New Zealand, trailers are a luxury,” Liang explains. “I said ‘Don’t you want to go to the trailer that we arranged for you?’ ‘No, I just want to sit and watch.’ ‘Why do you want to watch it, you’ve seen it hundreds of times!’ And she said ‘I learn something new every time’. To Pei-Pei, the secret of life is constant education and curiosity and learning. Movies are her work and her craft and her life, and she never gets bored. If I can be like her, that’s the life, right?”
Speaking of which, it’s time we put Liang through our Life in Film interrogation.
What’s the film that made you want to become a filmmaker? Terminator 2: Judgment Day is the movie that is at the top of the mountain that I’m climbing. To me it’s the perfect blend of spectacle, action design, smarts and heart. It poses the theory that if a robot can learn the value of humanity then maybe there’s hope for the ships that are us. That’s perennial, and possibly even more pertinent today. It holds a very special place in my heart, along with Aliens, Mad Max: Fury Road, Die Hard, La Femme Nikita and Léon: The Professional.
What’s your earliest memory of watching a film? I have a cassette tape that my dad made for my grandma in 1981 (he’d send tapes back to his mother in Hong Kong). I was three years old and he had just taken us to see The Empire Strikes Back in the cinema. And he can’t talk to my grandma because I’m just going on and on about R2-D2. I will not shut up about R2-D2 and he’s like, “Yes, yes I’m trying to talk to your grandmother,” and I’m like, “But Dad! Dad! R2-D2!” So it’s actually an archive, but it’s become my memory.
What’s the most romantic film you’ve ever seen? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It’s not the sexiest, but it’s the most romantic. That last scene, those last words where she goes “But you’re gonna be like this forever and I’m gonna be like this forever…” and he just goes “okay”. That to me is one of the most romantic scenes I’ve ever seen. It is a perfect movie.
And the scariest? If it’s a horror movie, the most scared I’ve been is The Ring. I was watching it on a VHS and I was lying on a beanbag on the floor and I was paralyzed with fear. I couldn’t move, because I felt that if I moved she’d see me! Also, American Psycho just came to me this year. I caught the twentieth anniversary of that movie, which is a terrifying film, and again, possibly more relevant now than when it was made. The scariest film that’s not a horror is Joker. It scared me how much I liked it. When I came out of the movie, I was like, “I’m scared because I kind of love it, but it’s horrible. It’s so irresponsible. I don’t wanna like this movie but goddamn, I feel it.” Like, I wanted to go on the streets and rage. In a way we’re all the Joker, we’re all the Batman. That duality, that yin and yang, is inside everyone of us. It’s universal.
What is the film that slays you every time, leaving you in a heap of tears? This is a classic one, the opening sequence of Up. The first ten minutes of Up just destroy me every time. I also saw Soul a couple of days ago and I was with the whole family and I, just, if I wasn’t with the whole family I would have been ugly-sobbing. I had a real ache in my throat after the movie because I was trying to stop [myself] from sobbing.
Tell me your favorite coming-of-age film, the film that first gave you ‘teenage feelings’? Pump Up the Volume. Christian Slater! Off the back of Pump Up the Volume, I fancied myself as a prophet and wrote a theater piece called Lemmings. Obviously the main character was a person who could see through the façade, and everyone else was following norms. “No one understands me, I’m a prophet!” So clearly I have this shitty, Joker-style megalomaniac inside of me. It was the worst play, and I don’t know why my teachers agreed for us to do a staging of it!
Tumblr media
Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis in ‘Pump Up the Volume’ (1990).
Is there a film that you and your family love to rewatch? We’ve tried to impose our taste on our children, but they’re too young. We showed them The Princess Bride—they didn’t get it. We literally showed our babies Star Wars in their cribs. That’s how obsessive Star Wars fans we were.
Name a director and/or writer that you deeply admire for their use of the artform. I have a slightly weird answer for this. Can I just give love to Every Frame a Painting by Tony Zhou and Taylor Ramos? They are my film school. I was thinking of my love of Edgar Wright, but then I thought of their video essay on Edgar Wright and how to film comedy, and his essay on Jackie Chan and the rhythm of action and then their essay on the Coen Brothers and Shot Reverse Shot. I must have watched that 30 times ahead of the TV show that I’m making now. I started out in editorial and Tony Zhou is an editor and he talks about when to make the cut: it’s an instinct, it’s a feeling, it’s a rhythm. I realized the one thing in common that I could mention about all the films I’ve loved is Every Frame a Painting. It’s their love of movies that comes bubbling out of every single essay that they made that I just wanna shout out at this part of my career.
Were there any crucial films that you turned to in your development for Shadow in the Cloud? Indiana Jones was something that Chloë brought up—she likes the spiffiness and the humor of Indiana Jones. Sarah Connor was our touchstone for the female character. For one-person-in-one-space type stories, I watched Locke quite a lot, to figure out how they shaped tension and story and [kept] us on the edge of our seats when it’s only one person in one space. In terms of superheroes, I came back to Aliens. Not Alien. Aliens. You know, there are two types of people in this world—people who prefer Alien over Aliens, and people who prefer Aliens over Alien. But actually I think I vacillate for different reasons.
Can there be a third type of person, who thinks they’re both great, but Alien³, just, no? Maybe that’s the best group to be in. We don’t need to fight about this, we can love both of them! I was having an argument with James Wan’s company about this, because there’s a rift inside the company of people who prefer Alien over Aliens.
Okay, program a triple feature with your film as one of the three. I don’t know. Ask Ant Timpson!
I’ll ask Ant Timpson. [We did, and he replied: “Well, one has to be the Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner: Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. And then either Life (2017) or Altitude (2010).”]
Thank you Ant! I used to go to his all-nighters as a university student. He is the king of programming things.
Tumblr media
Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Life’ (2017).
It’s strange that we never met at one of his events! Ant would make me dress up in strange outfits and do weird skits between films. (For those who don’t know, Timpson ran the Incredibly Strange Film Festival for many years—now part of the New Zealand International Film Festival—and still runs an annual 24-Hour Movie Marathon.) So what’s a film from those events that sticks in your head as the perfect genre experience with a crowd? It was a movie about a man protecting a woman who was the girlfriend of a mafia boss: A Bittersweet Life. Not only does it have one of the sexiest Korean actors, sorry, not to objectify, but also I actually screenshot a lot of that film for pitch documents. And, do you remember a crazy Japanese movie where someone’s sitting on the floor with a clear umbrella and a woman is lactating milk? Visitor Q by Takashi Miike. I remember just how fucking crazy that was.
Finally, what was the best film you saw in 2020? I haven’t seen Nomadland yet, so keep in mind that I haven’t seen all the films this year. I have three: The Invisible Man, which I thought was just amazing. I thought [writer-director] Leigh Whannell did such a great job. The Half of It by Alice Wu, a quiet movie that I simply just adored. And then the last movie I saw at the cinema was Promising Young Woman. The hype is real.

mourning log from a few days ago
(didn’t post this at first but these feelings came back to me since i hadn’t posted them / vented them so i figured i might as well. added in some thoughts from today as well. obvious cw for death and grief)
spent a lot of time [while i was away] just letting myself be upset about techno some more… i knew the grief would come back around for me, i could kind of sense the ebb of it and i knew i’d need time again. it’s kind of worse in a way; at least all the crying my eyes out for days on end i did at first was cathartic (and also completely incapacitated me so i at least had an excuse to myself as to why i couldn’t get anything done.) now i don’t cry as much, or when i do it’s just a little — instead i just sit around feeling heavy and dull and sad. i keep finding myself still thinking, habitually, of when he’ll come back. i have moments while watching other people’s streams where i suddenly find myself anticipating him joining the vc, i have dreams of him streaming and sometimes i wake up and i have to remind myself of what’s real and what isn’t. just like i did before, i get struck with random bouts of missing him, except this time each wave comes with the reminder that he’s not coming back, and that fact hasn’t gotten any easier, not really
i finally got around to rewatching the emduo turtle stream for the hundredth time… i tried, before, but i couldn’t do it, and i tried again while i was gone and it was a bit better though not by much. watching from phils perspective instead of techno’s probably helped to be honest... i got a bit overzealous after that and tried to continue watching techno’s steering wheel vod but then i started crying and couldn’t stop so i had to switch away again. it always feels so strange and wrong when that happens, crying so much to something that usually would make me so happy; crying to a silly video of a guy i love playing minecraft, of all things lol
i sort of just can’t stop thinking about how young he was. same age as my brother, only a few older than me, he was barely getting started and i just feel so horrible that he didn’t get more time. it’s kind of obvious to say but it’s just so unfair, and it’s not hard for that unfairness to make you feel really hopeless about a lot of things. though i try not to let it, because techno wouldn’t want it that way
it’s… i can feel myself trying to compartmentalize what happened: when i watch videos with him i keep finding myself mentally figuring out if it’s from pre or post diagnosis.. both make me feel awful though so i don’t know why i keep thinking about it. if it’s from before i get so upset because i just miss when everything was okay. if it’s from after i get upset because even though he was as funny and energetic as always on stream, it would have been one of the last few things for his channel he got to do, and the knowledge that he was going through such a difficult and painful experience during that time makes me upset too, because he didn’t fucking deserve it. the unfair thing, again
i‘ve been thinking about that doc tweet a lot since i saw it a few days ago to be honest. he said everything there — “It is normal to feel very sad losing someone you loved and cherished. Eventually you will be able to look back and remember the good feelings you had watching.” like… ow. yeah. i just hope so. i get a lot of techno videos in my recommended and i’ve been watching them pretty regularly; the shorter content like that is a lot easier for me to just smile and laugh to while i watch without that nagging hollow feeling coming back too badly like it often does when i watch vods. i still flinch away from the sight of the last video every time i go on his channel to find something though and i don’t know when that will go away but yeah. it’s a weird feeling, you know? like when i’m watching and he does something that makes me laugh and smile, sometimes it’s okay, and other times my chest twists all of a sudden and there’s a pit in my stomach and it’s all too much to think about. it’s just strange
as i mentioned i started writing a c!techno closure fic, but it’s going to be so emotionally intense to write that i’m sure it’ll be hard to finish and hard to let other people read. even just the snippets i wrote last night sort of opened the floodgates of feelings and i woke up today thinking about it…. shoutout to c!ranboo dying so i can project my feelings about death onto him in this lol. also c!bedrock bros reconciliation scene IS HAPPENING. so you know. but yeah hahahaah i hope when it’s done maybe it helps someone
i’m borderline just a phil appreciation blog at this point but like seriously i’m always feeling so very very grateful for philza; if this has taught me anything it’s that he is definitely my ultimate comfort streamer lol. i’d gotten super into watching his vods on a near daily basis the last handful of months before the news, but ever since losing techno i have like completely latched onto him. i don’t think there’s been a single day since the news where i haven’t watched something of phil’s, he really helps me a lot. the fact that he’s constantly been the one to put himself out there for the benefit of the community and supported us even when it was hard for him too means a lot. christ
okay theres words. hopefully now that i have catalogued them here i will be able to think a bit less about them — that’s usually how it works with me :) i’m feeling a little wonky today so maybe i will channel that into some writing before bedtime
❤️ cia

I do not have dream merch (😔😔) but if I did and was in the discord I would literally never say anything and probably not even make it in time to the vcs before they got full. lmaoo more like dream is a milf. when dilf dream or whatever got trending a while ago because of connor, I replied to multiple people with “milf*” and I think I’d be happy if I ever got cancelled for that
yeah exactly!! I don’t want it to become a chore (which watching vods can be😭😭) I was watching ranboos mcc vod and I got so many ads I was ready to scream. also is it just me or are the ads always so fucking loud like it startles me so many times. idk about the sub thing tho but I’m like pretty sure you get an ad regardless
I haven’t bought a textbook for a single one of my subjects so I hope my lectures slides are good enough. last sem the exams were open book and online so I kind of just googled my way through the bio exam😬😬 also last semester I think I watched very few of my lectures and I’m already doing better than that this sem
apologist discourse is fully the lamest. it’s so boring too. and dumb. yeah!! discourse can be fun! I like having discussions and I love seeing different points of view but Apologist discourse?!?!?!! like seriously?? it’s so dumb especially with the assumptions made. which is why I always defend c!dream apologists. god you’re so right about the “in this day and age thing” but yeah teenagers will be teenagers
right?!?!! like I was like omg dream!! playing bedwars!! and I had a fun time watching it but like right after twt was back on their bullshit. good thing about living in australia though, half the stuff mcyttwt trends, doesn’t actually trend here lol. oh yeah that’s fair. I’ve watched hannah occasionally and she’s cool. absolutely cracked at bedwars. it’s so blatantly sexist!! and they’ll bend over backwards to justify how it isn’t it’s awful. lmao I felt the same when I left hannah’s stream once dream was gone😭😭 it sucks too cause they’ll whine about not getting dream content but the moment he goes and interacts with his FRIENDS they’ll start trending /neg or shitting on them for dumb stuff. like after dream played gartic phone with the ppsat crew and people started saying shit about gumi’s voice :/// plus another thing, kind of off topic but I was reminded, I see so many dream stans on twitter who hate techno so much (I don’t even know why and at this point I’m too afraid to ask like I know what he did but they’re so forceful in their hate) and just like??? dream is literally the biggest techno stan out there like how are you gonna have techno stans dni in your bio but still interact with dream🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
lolll. yeah my subjects really go from physics‼️bio🧫 chem🧪 to 😌being online: internet meets society😌
ranbob🥲🥲 I miss them dearly. the best dream apologist. YES DREAM WHERE IS THE LORE. it’s been MONTHS since the sneak peak. MONTHS. and sam slightly showing the courtyard in one of his streams and hinting at it’s importance??? like please give us the lore
but also!! new dream vid today :DDD
I’ve heard shipping rates to counties that aren’t american are killer and yeah I wouldn’t ever be awake enough to get into vcs….. here’s the thing though I’m not afraid to call dream a milf to his face but calling his mom a milf is a terrible first and only impression you know? My dumbass would walk in, reference the tapeworm post accidentally and be banned on site
They are loud but I’ve also found at that our favorite streamers are super quiet?? Like I was on dream’s stream for mcc and when I switch to quackity’s I got jump scared because he was so loud in comparison. Also if subs still get ads on vods I’ll fucking riot I’m jot subbed to anyone but no ads means no ads mother fuckers
From one college person to another :
Tumblr media
Also all my classes were live so I wasn’t able to go back and rewatch them…. But honestly good on you googling your way through test I was too anxious to do that but I was also too anxious to do well on any of the exams so lose lose for me.
As someone who whines about no dream content I personally love seeing him on his friends stream! It seems like he’s on his bedwars arc rn so I’m really happy he has a bunch of friends willing to play with him! AYO IF ANYONE SAYS SHIT ABOUT ANY OF THE PPSAT CREW ITS ON SITE. How dare they what gumi is someone bothering you I’ll take care of it what the fuck!!! The hannah stuff bothered me but the gumi stuff is pissing me off!!! I like gumi’s voice she’s baller!!! I’m about to start gatekeeping (/j) the dream stan community are you even a dream stan if you’re not also a rivals duo enjoyer???? Shameful. I’ve had the same sub title/heading thing for my tumblr page forever and it just gets truer every day. Also extremely curious to see how many people clicked the links in it. If you haven’t you should, the first one is a joke but the second one isn’t
Actually I can’t call you a nerd I’m put here taking math, spanish, chem, and bio of my own free volition. Actually if you have any group discussions promise me you’ll tell people to touch grass yeah? I just think it would be funny
Ranbob my favorite he/they when will they return from the war…. Or arrive to the war actually. Better yet when will tales from the smp return as a whole karl I know you’re busy but please spare some serotonin please! I didn’t actually read the inbetween lore ever but I liked the idea of it!! I also miss all the banger characters that came from it,,, crops, ranbob, the twins, Cornelius, robin, unnamed cattboy,,,, all of the other characters that I got attached to right away,,,, I miss them always. I was watching tubbo’s stream today and he was talking about how he’s getting bored on the dream smp and oh boy did that hurt. Logically tubbo isn’t actively trying to do any lore and several dream smp members still log in everyday and do something, but it was for sure a kick to the gut. About the courtyard stuff, I wonder what they’re waiting for? Is there something in it that hasn’t happened yet or is there a different reason we haven’t gotten to see it yet? Guess we’ll have to wait
I accidentally watched the wrong dream video so I spoiled the whole thing for myself akhdkfjd funfact the video and the extra scenes look very similar

Good sci-fi speaks to the times, and Domain has done that twice in four years
youtube
The email hit my inbox in mid-May. The reader kept things succinct.
Subject: Remember Domain?
Body: I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately:
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/12/the-domain-review-the-internet-can-be-worse-than-humanity-ravaging-epidemics/
Two months into a global pandemic obviously sticking around for a bit, I can’t say I had put much thought into a sci-fi B-movie I saw once several years back. But upon mention, I did instantly and vaguely remember Domain. I caught a screener for Ars ahead of a small sci-fi-only film festival in December 2016, and the premise stuck with me more than the plot or any single performance. In this unabashedly indie film (read: high-concept, super specific, and low-budget aesthetic), a viral pandemic called the Saharan Flu keeps racking up a body count. “The World Health Organization says it’s potentially civilization-threatening,” public broadcasts declare within the film’s opening minutes after 5,000 deaths (only!) sweep across Germany, Egypt, and Italy.
Ho-hum, another pandemic film, you say. We have a million of those. In fact, not even writer/director Nathaniel Atcheson had been recently thinking about Domain in light of our current predicament (I called and asked in June). But what happens in-film after its fictional pandemic makes Domain disturbingly prescient four years later. The movie follows seven people from across the United States, but most of the action takes place in similar-looking bunkers because humanity has been forced to quarantine en masse. And in this alternate version of the present day, the government requires these groups to keep tabs on each other by communicating through ever-present video chat—it’s not Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, or Skype; it’s the titular Domain.
“It was probably two or three weeks into [the pandemic] before I realized and put the connection together myself,” Atcheson tells Ars. “I literally made a movie about this exact scenario: people are home for a very long time and all they have is this Web interface. The real-world logistics are a bit different—obviously we can go outside, we just aren’t supposed to. So maybe that kept me from making the connection sooner, but I’m sort of embarrassed how long it took for me to think of it. I have the poster on my wall in my living room/dining room, and I was sitting here eating and looking at the poster. ‘Oh my god.'”
Talk about a 2020 logline: “After a deadly virus wipes out most of humanity, the survivors are forced to wait in self-sustaining bunkers with a networked video interface for communication, but one by one, they start mysteriously disappearing.”
Denver trying to send some long-distance love to Phoenix using the Domain video chat.
Maybe Domain isn’t a perfect movie, but it is definitely an interesting movie.

A lot of reviews from 2020 for a film from 2016…
Amazon Prime
IMDB
IMDB
Like the anonymous Ars reader above, others who had seen the movie had been making the connection, though. Domain hit DVD and VOD back in 2018, and the film sat on Amazon Prime waiting in plain sight as all of us started having more living room time than we bargained for this spring. Atcheson has since noticed an uptick in user reviews saying as much. And when we revisited our review of the film this spring, phew, does it make you do a double take.
If deadly flu destroys the world and we’re all left together on Skype, it won’t end well…
As the film’s reliance on a social network plot point may indicate, Domain has something to say about the nature of our interactions through digital means. It’s a place that empowers consequence-free action for trolls like Orlando, a place that can feel so isolating that suicide seems viable, and a place where a real mystery can propagate endless fear-mongering theories…
Domain‘s fictitious president oversees a US that is ransacked by viral outbreak and choses to save everyone by only focusing on a select few. And within this new world, bullying and fear could run wild. As with any good sci-fi, there’s probably a lesson somewhere.
Of course, when Atcheson was writing Domain sometime before 2015, he had no intention of predicting or speaking to life in 2020 (or to the very unexpected changes in the fall of 2016 when Domain debuted, for that matter). Without spoiling anything, neither viral pandemics nor the horrors of always-online life actually inspired Atcheson to sit down and write Domain. Instead, a separate subject still on the public’s mind did: the criminal justice system. Domain turns out to be a twist movie, a concept Atcheson has a love/hate relationship with. It can make a film more complex and interesting, but “they’re usually so often just a ‘Gotcha!'” he says. “They don’t always have thematic relevance, so I wanted this one to make you go back and think about everything else you saw.”
Making an indie film he knew would struggle to get footing since it didn’t feature a star, Atcheson ultimately kept Domain at a tight ~90 minutes to maximize his chance for finding an audience and earning festival showings. As such, the twist may not be as fully explored as some viewers would like. But the filmmaker told Ars he actually had a sequel in mind if the opportunity came about, and that story would lean much more into the ideas in Domain‘s final act. And if Atcheson had the opportunity to remake things (or to turn Domain into a series on Netflix or Quibi or whatever), those ideas would be emphasized faster and further.
“The virus stuff is interesting, but pandemics have happened. People have made movies about people waiting in isolation from viruses or viruses ravaging the world. For the original concept, I was inspired by this novel Station Eleven, which is about to be adapted into a TV series,” Atcheson says. “The concept is: everyone loves a good viral thriller. And for me, I wanted to set that apart from the crowd by having this other thematic thrust, which is this one-two punch of the virus and then [what happens in the end, #NoSpoilers]. Today’s Black Lives Matter and justice-reform protests have strangely made the movie more relevant than I could’ve ever expected. I never wanted it to have a happy ending, because that didn’t feel appropriate for the story. I couldn’t see a way for it to resolve into something positive for these characters.”
Given the odd state of cinema in 2020, revisiting small, possibly overlooked titles from recent years has become one of the few, reliable ways to see new (or at least new-to-you) films. And revisiting Domain, which is still available on VOD and Amazon Prime, actually took my mind to a few other recent smaller films. The stylish and claustrophobic High Life, Claire Denis space flick with Robert Pattinson, shares a similar high aesthetic and vibe (“I actually watched that at the beginning of quarantine,” Atcheson says. “I was definitely going for a similar thing, at least with the art direction, though obviously I’m not Claire Denis. I thought it was great”).
But Domain makes me think most about another Amazon Prime flick—The Vast of Night. These two films share an approach to storytelling: take a known archetype (pandemics and aliens), apply your vision and voice, and give audiences just enough to think about without offering an explicit message, thus allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions.
When Ars spoke to Vast of Night filmmaker Andrew Patterson last fall, he believed that should be the goal of both good sci-fi and of good films in general. They have captivating central stories and timeless-enough ideas and themes for different generations or time periods to see their reality within. “Good films will be about something else depending on the era they’re watched in. They can kind of meander through time,” Patterson said, citing a Lawrence of Arabia rewatch that brought the film’s LGBTQ undertones to his attention. “So I hope we made a movie that in 40 years is about the definition of a family or in 30 years is about something else.”
It’s only been four years for Domain, but already the film has lived through and resonated within two potentially historic and distinct times in US (if not world) history. Not bad at all for a young filmmaker’s little sci-fi B-movie.

hey cia how r u!! could u maybe rec any webseries, videos, tv shows, movies, books, fics, etc. that are comforting, happy, calming? i know it sounds silly but i'm not in a good headspace and i'm getting overwhelmed by what i'm watching: 1. a gta rp series from hispanic side of twitch that deals with really heavy stuff like death, violence, trauma. 2. dsmp, while its minecraft, it gets heavy with some characters, esp wilbur. 3. mr robot. its Too Much,i need a rest. i ask u cuz i trust ur taste <3
hiya!! it doesn’t sound silly at all nonnie <3 here’s some things i find comfort in ^_^
1. i have a comfort vods playlist full of fun and lighthearted vods if you’d like those — i’ve also been making my way thru the lovely philza vod archive document that was sent to me, if you too are a phil enjoyer!
2. video games are very peaceful to me, i always vouch for toontown rewritten as it is my ult comfort since i was a little kid, simple and fun and grindy so you can turn your brain off. i also play genshin impact despite not knowing Anything about it and all i do is explore and kill random monsters. both are totally free!!
3. on youtube, i like to relax to all sorts of random things, including: fine art restoration, cute little carving instruction videos, nilered chemistry videos, guy who is friends with a bunch of geese, funky video essays by various people, and random space science stuff. i also like the game grumps a lot and various compilations of them are pog
4. haikyuu!! is still my comfort anime after all this time and i haven’t watched anime in years so i recommend that. i also liked yuri!!! on ice :)
5. the last show i watched that really stuck in my brain was she ra and the princesses of power :) i also rewatch cartoons from when i was a kid a lot! i watched regular show recently, but i frequently rewatch spongebob (seasons 1-3 specifically) and also avatar the last airbender. if you like adult/comedy cartoons i think bob’s burgers and futurama are very good too
6. one of my favorite books i’ve read was Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe! super easy read, really nice coming of age lgbt story. i’ve also been rereading the original percy jackson & heroes of olympus books which are super nice and nostalgic
i don’t consume that much media cause fixations and stuff so a lot of these are just nostalgia or things i watched yrs ago but i hope something in here catches your fancy! sending good vibes anon <3
