[Shukufuku (Blessing)], moving art piece by Shiori Matsura depicting kitsune Kuzunoha, in her human shape, lovingly embracing her young son (who will grow to become famous onmyoji Abe no Seimei.)
The shadow nicely echoes the famous ukiyoe “The Fox Woman, Kuzunoha, Leaving Her Child” by Yoshitoshi:

Today is the 20th Anniversary of the release of Haibane Renmei, which is a great time to post art. Good art, you ask? Oh the best - early 2000′s wallpapers from the dregs of the internet, of course!
Tumblr media
Nothing says “graphic design is my passion” like throwing black font on a black background because, like, its the Black Parade? It has to be black???
Another genre of Wallpaper at the time was the ‘anime + poetry’ blend, which Haibane was a poster child for:
Tumblr media
Posted by “Knight Of Lain” in 2005 as their first wallpaper, King tier shit. This genre really died out by ~2010, but I think early internet had a lot of quasi-spiritual, “Christian-ish but I don’t like, read the bible ya know?” teens for whom Haibane’s ennui & iconography really hit home. Those people are either practicing capital-W Witches or Gwyneth Paltrow now.
Something I did discover when browsing DeviantArt was the people who uploaded “wallpapers” that were just screenshots? Of their desktops? So like their UI was still there, so you couldn’t really download it as a wallpaper:
Tumblr media
At the time that would be frustrating, now its perfect Y2K-core vibes. “Posted in 2006″ yeah I gathered that, show me the Warcraft 3 mods don’t tease me like this!!
To diversify a bit, I did find this Winamp skin in the Museum, fully ‘flipped image’ and everything like how it was done at the time:
Tumblr media
I find this particularly amusing because I know why it exists - Serial Experiments Lain was hugely popular with the techno scene for obvious reasons, so there are tons of winamp skins for that show, and Haibane is related to Lain, so even though Haibane shares like none of Lain’s aesthetic in that regard...why not right?
On the more professional side, Megatokyo Author Fred Gallagher absolutely did a Haibane-inspired sidestory in his webcomic in 2007! He loved the anime and I think its ‘genre’ was something he was trying hard to emulate in the late 2000′s:
Tumblr media
Link if you want to read it, though the Haibane elements are more aesthetics than plot.
To end this a little meta, Haibane wallpapers, like everything back then, were built out of “constituent parts”, official art from scanned artbooks and promotional material, cut & recoloured in photoshop. One of the big source ones at the time came from this image, if I recall correctly:
Tumblr media
Which is funny, because it kindof isn't from Haibane Renmei? That isn’t Rakka. Its from Yoshitoshi Abe, in a doujin he published in 1998 *called* Haibane Renmei, but it was extremely different from the show. Its just a collection of standalone art jumping between cute and gothic-creepy, and these angels live in modern Japan:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The latter creepy stuff is actually kindof funny, as you can tell this guy is definitely designing for Serial Experiments Lain at the time - which shares that sensibility deeply - but its an aesthetic that would barely survive in the actual product by the time the *true* predecessor doujin of the anime, Haibane of Old Home, would be released in 2001. But since so many Haibane fans *were* alt-edgy goth loving freaks due to how Haibane was situated & transmitted in western anime cultural spaces at the time (and its inherent themes, not taking that away), pulling from the extant creepy art out there was a natural instinct. So that og image just...became Rakka.
You can check out the 1998 doujin here in full if you want - if you are a fan of NieA under 7, the other anime based on one of ABe’s doujin, you will definitely notice some proto-characters for that story in this.
(Also since it has happened before, every art featured here is unironically great, their creators are great for making them. Cringe is dead, I love all of this)

so more adventures in book cover illustrations today….
I picked up this book at the bookstore today cuz I was like damn that’s a nice cover
Tumblr media
and it also……..looked a lot like the covers for the Japanese edition of the Murderbot Books?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(look at how the covers line up??? uhg theyre so good)
so we checked and yes they were illustrated by the same guy, yoshitoshi ABe, who, if you dont already know, did the character designs for serial experiment lain !!
Tumblr media
which just totally blew me away cuz like, I loved this series as a kid! I watched the whole thing when I was like 12 on the floor with a portable dvd player, it was hugely influential to me at the time.
i apologize if this is like already well known information and im just late to the game but this was a wild reveal for me! i just think it’s neat!

#mARTch challenge day 2 - inspirations
Im writing since the things off this list that Id want to draw are a circle diagram with "favorite thing to draw"
Animals and plants are probably the biggest source of inspiration. Especially lesser known animals and weird plants. I like looking into flower symbolisim and stuff too, the idea of being able to communicate complicated ideas with a coded visual language is appealing to me. Tho probably not a lot of people know flower symbolisim of hand (i dont either) its just a way to guide myself in picking which flower... i feel similarly about gemstones and minerals. I like drawing them and i love looking at them, but i think its harder for me to capture the "essence of beauty" in a stone than a plant or animal. I think birds and fish are the most fun for me to draw and I love learning about them. They all have really different life cycles and "personalities". They can also be very colorful and I'm drawn to that. Same with insects, they are funny little guys, and they have great features to incorperate into other creatures.
Similar to animals I love mythological creatures. They are probably on of the most consistent and lasting sources of inspiration for both my art and writing. Its a pretty much never ending topic, its why i went with it as the theme for my long term comic project Tidal Lines. I also just love learning about and drawing weird little guys. Tsuchinoko are an eternal favorite. Dragons also, since they can be so many different ways. The dragons in breath of fire 4 are some of my favorite and a very early (like age 7) source of inspiration to draw and think about dragons.
Those are like the main inspiration for subjects i like to draw... in terms of actual drawing style its a bit more difficult to talk about since I tend to just draw "however it wants to be drawn" in the way that I can manage. In a sense the tactile elements of the medium are the inspiration. I love the way watercolors control, and love watching it and ink on the page. I dont do a lot of "style studies" and sometimes I think i really should.... Id like to be influenced by the art of yoshitoshi abe, range murata, clamp, miyazaki (especially the nausicaa comic and his pencil+water color style). I also would like to be able to draw in a more simple but appealing way, the style of digimon adventure is one I like a lot for that quality. I think once i list these out I can see the influences in my "style" but im not sure if one would think of it nessecarily... im always interested to hear what people think my art looks like and compaires to, since i feel like i can't really tell.
Oh, the way I draw noses is consiously chosen because of Secret Saturdays and early Soul Eater. Its changed a bit, because I wanted ways to get more variation, but its something in the way I draw faces that can be directly traced back to those styles.
I am also inspired just gennerally by the marriage of visual art and storytelling. I like being able to include character and worldbuilding details visually. In a sense it feels more naturalistic to present these sorts of details visually, and when I see nice examples of it in other works its really exciting. There is a lot of this in miyazaki's films.
I am also inspired by people who can get "messy" or scraggly lines to look good and give a vibe. Randal's friends is a comic that i think of, and I want to draw with more looseness and weirdness.
I am very much inspired by my friends who draw. Drawing together and working on our art and talking about it and showing each other is one of the main things that keeps me encouraged to keep drawing.
TLDR i am inspired by everything in the world, all beaings and stories and my friends :>

Your original illustrations are really fantastic. I dig the colors and the anime girls. I feel like I resonate with them well, so I am curious about what creatively influences you. Like... Why do you color as you do? Why are your illustrations of anime girls? What do you think of when illustrating? Are there artists, pieces of media, or events in your life that inspire your stylings? Sorry if that seems like a lot or if I'm being intrusive! I just really want to know why your art is the way it is, but I feel that if I ask that so simply, I may not receive an answer with nuance, which is what I'm hoping for.
no worries about being intrusive, if anything, i appreciate the ask!
there's no clear-cut answer for a lot of these, but i'll try to articulate as much as much as possible. i started drawing from a very young age (~5 or so), and my preference was always cartoons/games/anime. i always enjoyed heavy stylization - not that i disliked realism, it just felt as if i had already seen so much of it before? and this isn't to discredit such works, just that they werent something i personally gravitated towards.
as i got older, i realized i wanted to pursue my goal of becoming an artist. things started to change when i entered college, though. it's a choice i dont regret, but i often felt a bit lost in comparison to my peers - because i didnt really draw [or study/learn] the way they did. i still struggle with insecurities regarding technical skill or talent because of this - and i actually stopped drawing for a year or so after i graduated. i kept thinking "its just another anime style anyways." (which is discrediting in and of itself, as all art has value regardless of how subjective it may be).
basically, i did a lot of soul searching - and the reasons i wanted to draw started to resurface. i loved drawing incredibly cute, yet somewhat outlandish looking characters. of course there's a sense of nostalgia with this, but i always preferred the art used for older anime (90s and early-mid 2000s specifically). i'm also really into hobbyani, which is basically hobby/kids media (precure, duel masters, beyblade, etc). i love the sense of experimentation that comes from designers who intentionally market stuff to a broader audience within restrictions, if that makes sense? it just seems to resonate with me.
i'm also heavily into old tech/computer graphics. a big example of this is the old (and still running!) chat program known as worldsplayer. i discovered it about a decade ago, and while a lot of people found it ominous or strange, it felt... comfortable to me. reminded me a lot of the stuff i used to play as a kid, but beyond that, a sense of style/texture i wanted to replicate in my artwork.
(as a sidenote: i actually run a sideblog dedicated to old chatroom media called digitalspacetraveler!)
as for specific inspirations/artists? i love the traditional sketchiness of van gogh, rembrandt, etc. a lot of classical painters during the renaissance era + beyond come to mind. for more modern artists, id say yoshitoshi abe, shigenobu matsumoto (duel masters mangaka), yoshihiko umakoshi (doremi, heartcatch precure, casshern sins), hajime ueda, and a plethora of artists on tumblr/pixiv/twitter.
basically, i love the idea of combining ridiculous amounts of texture with otherwise cutesy and/or 'smooth' styles, such as those found in anime/manga. the end goal is pretty different from the initial sketch, but that's what makes it fun to me. mimicking traditional mediums while also incorporating digital processing, overlays, and filters!

thinking out loud about some anime an illustrator i like worked on
so, one of my favorite illustrators (at least, I think that's the right term for him) is yoshitoshi ABe. recently i made the decision to look through a bunch of projects he had a hand in, mostly because i wanted to see what kind of stuff he'd attached himself to over the decades. prior to this i'd only seen Serial Experiments Lain, but i feel like basically everyone's seen that so that's not saying much lol. this was partially spurred on by a friend of mine telling me Texhnolyze was among their favorites. at time of writing, i've finished Texhnolyze and NieA_7, and i'm watching Haibane Renmei on-and-off and loving it. the world is bizarre and beautiful, and the character designs are lovely and have so much personality in my eyes. so that's where i started. so below is a series of rambles and thoughts i've had on this little journey of mine up to this point. i've still got a ways to go.
misc. spoilers for Texhnolyze in the next section
texhnolyze was a show i really enjoyed, but falls into the same pit as serial experiments lain in my brain. i struggle to understand what it's trying to say below the immediate surface and i end up primarily enjoying it as a surface-level product. not to say that i didn't make some connections in my head along the ride, i have so many questions about the world that i want answered, and some really fun observations I made. ichise's conversation with the voice in the chair was something that i had a lot of fun picking apart because it tickled that little goblin in my brain that loves social science. with the whole idea that height relates to authority, the pile of stones bringing images of gods on mountains in myth, but the chair tying all that powerful imagery up in this idea of boredom. apathy of the gods and all that. the entire trip to the surface is something that had me on the edge of the seat, and kinda tied into my greater sci-fi brainrot. that whole idea that one a society stagnates and rots people seek "better times", and this is how you end up with so many space prussians/germans being bad guys in older sci-fi anime like classic gundam and legend of the galactic heroes. it's people clinging to an idea of a """better time""" to larp that they're better than they are. this is what was going through my head during the arc of the story on the surface, whenever i saw that outdated technology that lives only in old b&w movies and period pieces. despite these obversations, i feel like i can't formulate a big picture, this is by no means bad, but i can't help but feel like i'm "missing something". though, this might be rectified in lain's case when i get around to it, it's been close to 10 years since i last watched it.
misc. spoilers for NieA_7
this is one that i don't think i ever heard someone talk about prior to me just plucking it off of ABe's wikipedia page. it's this weird slice-of-life comedy about living in poverty but there's also humanoid aliens that are kinda just around and comically failing to integrate into society. that whole second point, with the aliens, i feel it kinda detracts from a lot from the show's actually really simple and touching heart about just trying to escape being poor. the whole thing is kinda tainted with this mild xenophobia for the sake of "comedy" and the vast majority of the recurring aliens are these really mean-spirited racist stereotypes. eventually i came to ignore the vast majority of that aspect of the show, besides the titular NieA, and focus on the part of it that really spoke to me. the main character, Mayuko, is a young adult working 3 jobs on top of going to cram school in a desperate attempt to get into a good college and escape poverty by getting a """real job""" and a """future""". the reason why i use quotations is the same reason why her character really spoke to me. she was so focused on the mere act of survival and vaguely working towards the future that she never found the time to really think about the future. no plans, no dreams, inching towards a success she has no idea how to capitalize upon. something similar happened to me, personally. i spent the vast majority of highschool and college fighting for good grades and accolades with no other plan than to just get away from a very toxic family situation. and i succeeded. i gave up a social life for the sake of advancing and was rewarded by getting poached right out of college into a fairly comfortable. i moved out 6 months later and subsequently broke down. without that constant pressure of ESCAPE ESCAPE ESCAPE i had this sort of psychological explosive decompression and became incredibly depressed, and almost made some very poor and very permanent decisions. i saw a character that was flying towards the same mistakes i made and i was wondering all along if the show would propose some kind of "solution" that i'd failed to see. it didn't offer anything concrete, but something much simpler that i nontheless really appreciated. a loving promise that things will be okay somewhere, someday. the same sentiment helped me when i needed it. i get that that's corny as hell, but i'm a stupid mushy man-thing. it's a show i really recommend people look at, because while the lows are INCREDIBLY low and mean, the heart is there and beautiful.

Demons Unleashed ~ Origins of the Ink Demon Gaiden Pt.9 ~
[Iwakura-Maxell Residence - Japan]
Heero : So, you say that Duo Maxwell saved Lain's life...from men?
Rei : Yep It's the truth. The only reason that I hid you in this facility because you were being targeted by criminal and men that wanted to bring sexuall assaults on you, but luckily, Duo saved your life and he saved yours.
Lain : Oh wait a sec. I remember now, men were out there trying to assault me, hurt me, and tried to tease to bring those awful things doing this to me. However, I was saved by both Duo and you, Rei. Why didn't you tell me this before?
Rei : Because, Lain. You're a girl and you have an awareness for your autism, no one wonder why filthy ugly men wanted to hurt a girl that has an awarenes who doesn't knows much about the people. For your safety, all of Yoshitoshi Abe's characters are here for you and they need you for your protection.
Heero : Now I understand why one of my boys saved a girl's life. Being saved from criminals before The Wired attacked and almost lay waste on Tokyo.
Rei : As everything is in order in this facility, I will understand that I must protect my bestie from being harmed by the hands of a criminal scum, taking her to safe place and keeping her protected with all the security I installed for her. That's why chose this place for to be her new home, along with Alice and your robot Deathscythe.
Lain : Now you understand how I felt that way. I always thought that everyone say that we are always connected as a friend. My protection for your kind would be satisfying since the day that Duo saved me.
*flashback*
Lain (as seen in flashback) : Yamero! Oi, Yamete! Yamete!
Alice (As seen f : Please, you guys! She's only a girl with autism! You criminal scums are going down with the fishes if I ever lay a finger on her, she's not lewd bait and there's no way you aren't gonna be so lucky that men are totally disgusted as you are! You can all go to hell without us!
Thug A : Hey there, girlfriend of this computer girl. Better watch your mouth before I gonna have to do something for her really naughty.
Alice : Tatsukete...Tasukete...Lain-sama Tasukete! Hope you'll like me saying that! Cause you'll never know something for a girl screams and cry for help-!
Thug B : Speak english, b*tch! Just tell how much you loved this girl very much, we're just gonna make you and this Lain girl the victim to sexual assault and raping. Let's hurry up and--
*DBZ SFX : Grab*
Thug leader : Huh? Who the hell are you?
Duo : How about you leave that poor girl alone, Criminal scum. I'm here show you some justice and I have the urge to hit some balls yesterday. You're just a bunch of pussies that are too cringey for to be thugs and criminals. I'm just gonna have to teach a lesson.
Thug : Yeah, right. This guy would never do anything for-
(sounds of thugs getting beaten up by Duo)
Lain : I'm safe.
Duo : Now then, leave now or I'm gonna use my robot's scythe cut you down. Now scram, you punk ass motherf***ers! Don't you ever lay a finger on these girls again!
[the thugs screams in horror and run away]
Thug leader : Oh man! We're leaving!
[Chip's Memories - Takahito Eguchi]
Duo : Phew! That felt good! That's the last time I ever faced some f**kheads ever try to mess up this girl from being assaulted. The hero always save the day!
Lain : [blushes] Umm, thank you for saving my life, kind person. You finally stood up to those men that were trying to hurt me and humiliate me to cause an incident like that.
Duo : Hey, it happens all the time. It's too dangerous for you talk walk around these parts in Tokyo. If you wanna stay clear to find something safer from these parts, then I suggests that you should stay away from the bad streets of Tokyo. They're not as always dangerousl like the criminal scum of the Underworld, Yakuza!
Lain : You're quite the man I ever seen you as my knight in shining armor, I've always dreamed about you being a hero one day. I'm Lain Iwakura, and I aware of people's problems. What's your name?
Duo : It's Duo, Duo Maxwell. I'm a hero that's just for fun, you must be Lain Iwakura.
Lain : Duo...Please, just listen to my words. I want you to become my Knight in shining armor! So please, do that as a favor to keep it all a secret!
Duo : Of course, I will keep it as a secret. I'm sure that no individual would unveil this. That's why I had to make a promise that you'll be safer from now on, won't you? Hey, Heero. I'm gonna give these girls a special treat after I saved them from those thugs! It's on the house!
*flashback ends*
Heero : So Duo manage to save your life that was day when bad dudes tried to ever harm you in the Tokyo, no wonder why real world creator Abe abandoned you in this facility.
Rei : I decided that you were the one who saved from the dangers that lies within us!
Heero : Well, certainly. You needed the intriguing opposition on whether we save her or protect her from bad people. Just because she just girl trying to collect some data from information, doesn't she could be a victim to minor crimes that men has been condeming for their crimes and that is a steep price to pay.
Rei : Glad you got it right. (sips tea) God knows how the country can really lift up crime and desperately keeping others to be protected from being harmed. I beat up a bunch of baddies who dares stand in my way. I did recognize that I had the second chance to keep my bestie alive being from being in danger. So, that's no serious concussion whether these losers on the streets are basically heartless or no heartless. Thugs that I usually beat up are nobodies and heartless.
Trowa : Will all do in favor.
Quatre : I agree.
Wufei : Why absolutely.
(phone ringing)
Rei : Hold on, that's someone on the phone. It's my from studio Khara. I better check this one out. (phone beeps) Hello?
Asuka (via phone) : Hey, Rei. Are you there!?
[Old Rozenom City - Hideaki Kobayashi]
Rei : Asuka! What's going on?
Asuka (via phone) : There's something happening at the studio! Studio Khara has just been robbed by soldiers from SEGA!
Rei : Soldiers from Sega? Asuka, who are these soldiers? Where did they come from.
Asuka (via phone) : PSU! Soldiers from Sega, are from PSU!
Rei : What's PSU? Is it Penn State University?
Asuka (via) : What!? No, you Baka! it's Phantasy Star Universe! Those soldiers from PSU are the Illuminus and they've taken someone as Hostage!
Rei : Who's taken someone as Hostage?
Asuka (via Phone) : It's Shinji Ikari and he went missing for days since our last movie, I haven't seen in a day since his traumatic problems with psychological feelings from the show. You gotta give him some brain cells to grow! Whatever it is, Shinji is in danger and I've just managed to find the location where the Illuminus soldiers taken him to.
Rei : I know it. Misato knows what happened at the studio. Shinji wasn't taken by soldiers, he was taken by soldiers that were disguising their selves as them. Now I understand what it means to get fed by the Darkness that much. Shinji Ikari was taken hostage by Heartless!
Asuka : How did you know that, Mr. Smarty Boots Nice? You know that there's no such thing as--(hears Heartless laughing sinisterly) Oh God! Get back! I warned you, mister! No! Don't touch! UWAAAAAAAHHH! (phone line cuts off)
Rei : Asuka? Asuka! Great! Always something with those heartless. Neverless the odds stopping the evil forces that are linked with the spreading influence of Shinra Kusakabe.
Heero : Damn, Square Enix! Looks like these video games are going at a console war thing again. I hope it's not World War Blue, it's just the fact that Heartlesses are beginning to piss us off!
Duo : Guys, Rei. We gotta find and resuce her friends. They're in danger and we need their help.
Alice : But what about Lain? What are you planning on doing something when Lain gets in danger of being invovled of sexual assault and rape? Won't that be bad when you come back?
Rei : Don't fret it. This entire facility is filled with security that I Installed with from NERV. Lain and her Abe pals will be safe from criminals and it's got capable defenses. The keeper of this here facility shall keep an eye on her. Hey, Ichise, keep an eye on her. And whatever you do, do not fail us. That's an order.
Ichise : Understood. I will look out for the enemy intrusion.
Rei : Alright, let's go get these sons of b*tches. Cause they've picked wrong girl and I mean it. Time to give them a painful lesson about messing a girl with her awareness.
"Only Justice itself can protect Lain from the dangers that lies within us."
"No criminal or sinner shall ever get dirty hands someone that truly entrusted with."
"I'll keep on winning just to maintain the precious thing that is never to harmed."
"Always be the champion."

My Biggest Inspirations
It's impossible to create your own art without first being inspired by someone else's. And often times, artists' work is deprived of many different inspirations, all mixed together into one unique style.
Throughout the years, I have been inspired by many artists ranging from famous artists that painted during the 1700s-1800s to artists that I follow on social media.
I think it's interesting to look at my sources of inspiration and see how they appear in my own art. So, I'll be going over a few notable artists that have influenced my art throughout the years.
Alphonse Mucha
Alphonse was a famous Czech artist during the art nouveau movement. It was rare to see artists that combined a realistic, soft painting style with harsh lines during this time period, so his art stood out to me immediately.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The black lines contrast the soft shading of the skin and hair, and I think it looks really amazing. Something you may note is how outline of the figures are much thicker and darker than the smaller details (compare the lines around the hair vs the lines on the accessories). This brilliant use of line weight makes for a great composition, and it's something I have tried to encorporate into my art as well.

Pigeon is an artist from Korea. I found their art on Pinterest, and I immediatelly followed them on here as well as on Twitter. They are a MASTER at shading, and it's not surprisingly that they even teach their own art classes. Pigeon has been a huge inspiration to me for a few years, and their ability to render clothing, light, hair, etc. is breathtaking.

I think their art is so beautiful, as well as their intricate character designs. If you'd like to view more of their artwork, I recommend following them on Twitter.
Yoshitoshi ABe
Yoshitoshi ABe is a Japanese artist, most commonly known as the illustrator for the anime Serial Experiments Lain. He has a distinct style that gives off a somewhat eerie yet nostalgic vibe.

One thing I especially love about his art is the colours. There's a lot of green, blue and yellows used to give off this otherworldly feel. There's just something about early 2000's anime art that feels so nostalgic. I love this type of colouring, and I often incorporate it into my own art a lot.
Conclusion
Obviously these aren't the only artists that have inspired me, there are plenty more. Perhaps I'll make a follow up post. Anyways, definitely check these artists out, they're all fantastic and amazingly talented!
