I’m in love with your SG1 rabbit hole. It makes me so happy. Most especially your Janet/Daniel content cause that is my bread and butter/consuming obsession that hasn’t left in 21 years.

oh wow!! that is some serious dedication. that ship was my entry into stargate fandom, so i have great fondness for them. i'd love to hear more of your thoughts, anon!

my daniel/janet thought of the week is about how Everyone Else will react to them (and if i've already posted about it this week, sorry everyone).

i see teal'c being like #1 fan. he understands grief and loss and is so connected to daniel's grief and loss specifically (!!! i feel like we don't talk about that enough!!) that he will be The Most Supportive, and also the friend who is 100% confident that this is good and right and will work out. if daniel's ever having a moment of "we might be too different" or going through the inevitable ups and downs of a new relationship, teal'c is the friend who is like no, you are Right For Each Other and i am Confident You Will Work It Out. (plus, he has great respect for both of them, so he has independently determined that they are an acceptable match.)

jack is going to be the friend who is like "i don't know?? this seems... weird? unnatural somehow???" but also will say this mostly with his face because he's not about to get into like deep relationship talk unless daniel backs him into it. he couldn't explain why it seems weird, but it's because daniel and janet have existed in separate mental boxes for a long time (janet is super-professional and kind of intense, daniel is daniel), so for them to suddenly start hooking up is... you know. he's not opposed. he's just. well, he's genuinely weirded out at first, and then just pretends to be weirded out indefinitely because now he thinks it's funny.

sam is a little put out at first, tbh, but she keeps that to herself because she doesn’t want to be! she loves her besties so much and wants them to be happy! she thinks they'll probably be great together, and she's very careful to be 100% supportive. but it's going to be hard for a little while, personally, that her besties are honeymooning together, because they'll be pouring their attention into each other at the expense of their other relationships, and the whole fraiser family dynamic is changing, and of course they will want her to hang out with them sometimes and it's awkward to end up third-wheeling.

sam will also be the natural outside support to help cassie process this change (cassie being a teenager who Does Not Care, Ugh, but of course deeply cares). jack also helps out with that, in his own way. i don't see daniel ever replacing jack's role as cassie's primary paternal-ish figure, though of course they will get much closer as this goes on. but jack's ongoing joking disbelief lets cassie both complain in a lighthearted way and then wind around to arguing why it's fine, actually, omg stop when jack amps up the ridiculous... but sam is going to be the one to really listen and support her.

“May I?” Loki was asking— and he was trailing one hand downwards, fingers teasing along the line of Mobius’s belt. 

Mobius’s breath caught in an embarrassing little whimper, but he nodded anyway, a little distracted from wondering… Should he tell Loki he didn’t have any idea what he was doing, not really? Should he keep quiet and hope maybe Loki wouldn’t notice how woefully inexperienced he was beyond his own hands? Or— 

Mobius’s nervous train of thought was interrupted by Loki’s fingers finding his stiffened cock through his suit pants with a little squeeze— 

…And then Loki stopped, pulled back, and stared at Mobius with wide eyes and a slightly shocked look. 

“Wh… what is it?” Mobius asked, face flaming, instantly certain he’d done something wrong. “I’m sorry—” 

“Sorry?” Loki breathed, and to Mobius’s tentative relief, that slightly slack-jawed expression twisted up into a grin of delight instead. “My dear Mobius, you should definitely not be sorry about this.”

hmm! i think it’s a tie between thunder in our hearts, baby (a repo! band AU in which a zombie apocalypse happens) and we were warm until we went to hell (a star trek repo! au). they’re my only two works with the MCD tag, so.

gosh. i dunno. maybe last night i had a dream that you adored me, just because it’s a college AU where shilo is briefly aware of what happened in canon and really appreciates what she’s got.

do you get hate on fics?

no! thankfully. the closest i got was a comment recently telling me what i should do for the next installment of the series without even an “i liked this!” so. like i said. i’m thankful.

i have just resigned myself to not being a person who writes smut, okay. some of us just can’t.

so i started a sandman/sg1 crossover like a year and a half ago and i do, in fact, have a decent chunk of it written! i am still in love with the concept! (hob gadling, the man who doesn’t die, and daniel jackson, the man who dies so much they make jokes about it in-universe; also, hob gadling, the man who doesn’t die, versus everyone’s favorite space vampire wasps.) but at this point idk if i’ll ever actually finish it.

what are your writing strengths?

i am being! kind! to myself! i am good at getting into characters’ heads.

what are your writing weaknesses?

sometimes i have trouble figuring out where to start something, and if i can’t figure that out i have real trouble just jumping ahead in the scene. i’m getting better on it though. (also, ends of scenes my beloathed.)

thoughts on dialogue in another language?

I like to respond to comments! I appreciate it when people take the time to read and leave lovely notes and it always cheers me up, I try to do the same.

Ever since I started writing and being more active in the community I see how much hard work gets poured into everyone’s fics and I know that it spreads a little joy. I only wish I did it sooner.

Obviously no pressure to do that for mine - I would rather people enjoy reading my writing and if they don’t then that’s fine too… plus I know sometimes it’s hard to find the words!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Maybe How to Trap a Ladybug (E) I had to go back and write a sequel (Memories of You, E) because I wanted them to to get that happily ever after.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I had to think very hard about this. Maybe the Duke and I (M)? I should write more happy endings or maybe I should write more endings...

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not really and not often… it’s a gamble.

I wrote one where Adrien adopts the Robins and Marinette gets amnesia so they convince her that they’re all her kids. There’s a bit of Overboard (and its source of inspiration and namesake, Falling for Christmas (T)), MariBat and Lilo and Stitch and it was a fun Christmas fic.

I’m thinking of Renovator’s Delight (T). It was from a sprint fic at the Miraculous Writer’s Circle, I had to finish it in my own time but I really enjoyed the characterisation of Hugo and Emma.

John’s heart does a little jump of hope, but then stumbles. When Rodney came out to John as bi, he’d asked John, blunt as ever, if guys did it for John sexually, and John had answered an honest no. Rodney had barrelled onward with the conversation, not giving John a chance to explain any more. Because he would have, could have said:

Nobody does it for me sexually, exactly. 

He’s almost sure he could have said it to Rodney, given the chance, even if he’s never said it to anyone else. Not even Nancy, although she knew. When the moment came that her own enthusiasm for sex with John faltered, leaving John with nothing to work with, they’d gone cold so quickly John still shivered to think about it.

He loved Nancy as much the day they parted as the day they wedded. He just didn’t work the way guys were supposed to work. It bugged him, not that he should be different but that the world was so wedded to there being only one story. 

Every now and then John would become… attached, enamoured maybe, with someone. There hadn’t been many. Kyle Fraser had been his best friend when he was thirteen through fifteen, and they’d lived inside each other’s bubbles, constantly touching, close enough to breathe the same air, and then suddenly Kyle was friends with someone else and John had no idea at all what had happened, except he knew his heart was broken. 

There was nobody after that until Nancy. John finally had – or thought he had – some sort of a sexual awakening, because when Nancy wanted John, well, John wanted her back, and it was good – so good. Until it was suddenly gone, and John’s heart was broken again.

His last sexual experience was Mara; not his first one-night stand after Nancy. It makes John feel a little less lost to know if a woman throws herself at him hard enough, John can respond appropriately, and enjoy the outcome. DADT is the only reason he doesn’t do the same with guys. He starts to live up to his undeserved “Kirk” reputation. The real comparison there is the unrequited and obvious crush on the Science Officer in blue. 

John’s already anticipating the loss of whatever this magic is between him and Rodney, because he’s never going to be what Rodney wants, and he’s at least half certain Rodney just sees him as some hot-looking bones to jump, a friends-with-benefits, easy thing, and John’s feelings for McKay are not easy.

“Look, you know I’m a bit of a slut,” Rodney says to him, “so it’s simple – we fuck, you decide if you like it, if you do maybe we can fuck some more?”

He’s so damn casual about it, and John knows he’s putting his heart on the line, but he can’t escape the underlying draw of Rodney wanting him. Even if Rodney has everything all wrong – it isn’t bi-curiosity at work between them, it’s a longing of a different kind.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I think it's A Long Retirement! Get happy, Philip Marlowe! Move in with a guy! 'I never saw him again' AS IF, babe, move to mexico instead.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don't do it (instead using the age old work arounds), and when I do, it's only in languages I speak. So while I have enough German to do a little German in fics, but I really don't do it because I have never been confident in my language skills ever in my whole life!

19. First fandom you wrote for? probably it was Stargate SG-1 :)

Favorite fic you’ve written? okay so keep in mind that I basically never want to look at a fic I wrote before 2015 ever in my whole life, AND the target audience for everything I've ever written is Me in the Future, so this is big grain of salt territory. The one that really jumps to mind, that I come back to and remain happy with the writing, pleased by the idea, etc etc is a fic that comes up a lot in ask games and so on: Route 117 (also March! which is for an audience of literally only me, I think, but I do like it) (and all my perry mason fics let's be real)

14.) a fic you didn’t expect to write

Of published fics… about any of them, actually, since I haven't done a gift exchange this year and I find writing at all a generally difficult task. Of unpublished fics, definitely all of them, though I'm happy to write for the SGA fandom because of all the new things to play with.

25.) a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read

Many reams of reading later, I've managed to find the fics I've read from this year that I'd recommend the most:

Pilgrim's Progress by sardonicsmiley

Stargate Atlantis, Teyla & Rodney, Teen, 43k, Whump, Religion, Artificial Intelligence, Mind Control, Action/Adventure

Summary: ""You're not God, Sheppard's not your messiah, and I'm not the anti-Christ. But I am going to kill you.""

Mad respect for the author making an enormous fic just to use one line, and also an exceptionally strong argument for why Rodney and Teyla are such well-bonded friends (also a strong argument for Teyla/Rodney, as some other readers have commented, even if not an intended focus of the fic), because canon does not... articulate that. It does a great job on the particularities of living in a different galaxy, and how one thing on the "what problem are we having this week" scale can snowball and have a very narrow possibility of being fixed. In that respect, it's a very Stargate fic, and worth settling in for a long read.

Summary: "For a time there were two of them: a blood-and-bone Rodney and one made of data and light."

This fic is so sad. Gotta read it, though. This follows the Last Man!Rodney through his entire decision-making process to get John back home, and the author has done such an excellent job at following and developing Rodney's thought process - and even how it differs when he becomes a hologram - that it stuck with me to the point that I started writing Theorems of a Ghost and, a little bit, also Interface.

The Idiot's Array by @ashcroft-writes

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008), Cad Bane/Obi-Wan Kenobi, mentioned Obi Wan Kenobi/Satine Kryze, Explicit, 161k, Enemies to Lovers, Slow Burn, a lot of other tags I'm too lazy to write out but played a major factor in me deciding to read this fic

Summary: "Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi with countless regrets. However, forging a shameful secret with the notorious Cad Bane while undercover… it actually wasn’t one of them.

He wishes it was. What sort of man does that make him now?

After all, something inside has started to crack. Perhaps that’s why he isn’t even surprised when a certain bounty hunter surges back into his life, dead set on turning his calamitous fall into fortune… and on making the Jedi suffer that did him wrong."

Part 1 of Gunslinger's Paean (and how cool is that name for a series??), I think I was initially intrigued by this one because of some fanart? Or maybe I just saw it in so many bookmarks that I went "fuck it" and clicked the link. Either way, great decision on my part - if I hadn't already liked Bane/Kenobi, this would have convinced me. It's always been a bit of a what-if question in the SW fandom of "what if Obi-Wan was a bounty hunter?", and this answers the question with its own interpretation very, very well. I haven't read the other two fics in the series but I should probably get on that whenever my fandom brain swings back to Star Wars.

The Hobbit, Bard the Bowman/Thranduil, Teen, 11k, Canon-Typical Violence, Canon-Compliant Battle of Five Armies, Pre-Relationship, other tags that also made me click the link

Summary: "“It is because of love that I have spent centuries, millennia even, fighting against the evils of this world.” Thranduil could hear the hints of tremor in his voice but found that he could not steady himself. “Love for my people, love for the forest that is our home, love for Arda herself. Just because it is not the love you have read about in your storybooks does not make it any less real and it, like the Greenwood, like our kingdom, like our people, will endure. Now. Get out of my way.”

Or, how the events leading up through the Battle of Five Armies might have gone differently."

#i just shoved book canon and movie canon in a blender to see what came out <- tag that made me click on the link. This is probably a cornerstone fic in how I headcanon Thranduil, and the author does a fantastic job of taking the tatters of canon Tolkien left in the book(s) and propped up the inconsistencies in movie canon to make Thranduil a solid character. Load-bearing work in the fandom, really. I love the fact that it both does and does not happen in Thranduil's point of view, and that the author does a great job a differentiating how the differences in lifespan and experiences shape a character's perspective on the same events.

Indeed, even a lofty being like a Doriath elf feels faint among all the death - darkness is dwelling strong here, and Thranduil feels dim and alone as he walks the war-torn streets of Dale.He is untethered as he drifts among his fallen soldiers like a ghost. So, when a child turns a corner and runs directly into his leg, Thranduil almost doesn’t notice. ~~~ Bard's youngest, a talkative creature named Tilda, is separated from her family. Thranduil knows something must be done, but it is a challenge to figure out exactly what."

I quibbled on whether to include this, but, genuinely, aww. This is a Thranduil who's not great at something, knows it, and does his best anyway. I love how the author convey humor with their verbiage and pacing, and Thranduil's sincerity come across very clearly. He's a little awkward, means well, and can admit to himself when - and that! - he likes Bard. Short, sweet, worth reading.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Ronon Gets Mad at Sheppard, i think. i've got a lot of fics with a happy ending but i'm really proud of this one and how it turned out. it was a bit of a challenge bc i don't write ronon very often but it was really fun to get into his character and i'm happy with how things got wrapped up in that one, i think it's a very cute fic

thankfully, no!

yesss i love writing smut 🙏🏼 im honestly surprised at how little smut i have on my ao3 honestly, i don't think i even have a kink fic posted which is my favourite kind of smut to write. i should fix that 🤔 (feel free to send me ideas!!)

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

i have written exactly one crossover in my life, i posted it unfinished on wattpad like a decade ago and it was a bones/one direction crossover where the boys got kidnapped by the gravedigger. i think i wrote like 4 chapters total before i abandoned it 😅

not that i know of, and i really hope i never do. i have no issues with people sharing my fics but please don't claim it as your own!!

so i had this idea for a fic about radek visiting rodney everytime he's in the infirmary, and it starts off with like a "hey can you sign off on these things cool thanks bye" but then after the storm he visits him and sees his arm and it progresses to radek getting very sad and stressed every time rodney gets hurt so he visits him in the infirmary. i've written a few scenes for it but it's such a big project that i doubt i'll ever finish it

i'm very very good at writing angst and sadness, probably bc i am a void of angst and sadness 😂

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

endings i'm so bad at endings i can't write endings for SHIT i feel like most of my endings suck lmao i also cannot do technobabble i'm not smart 😂

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

i only speak my bastard native language so i have to rely on other people or google translate so i very rarely do it, but i think it's so cool when other writers can do it!!

uhhhh i don't remember if it was one direction or dan and phil that i first ever wrote for, i wrote for both of them right around the same time

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

i really love all the fics i've written, both published and unpublished, but i think my absolute favourite fic i've written was this ficlet i posted here for a kiss prompt between ronon and jennifer (i just think it's so adorable and i love them and the little team dynamic/interaction is so sweet it's just so cute okay i love it)

How many works do you have on ao3? 119, which is kind of...something when you consider that I only started writing fic again in 2022

What’s your total ao3 word count? 101, 481. Yeeps.

What fandoms do you write for? Most of those words are for The Clone Wars, but there are some other SW shows/movies in there too. I'm 100% Star Wars these days. But there are also works from Stargate, Firefly, Supernatural, and a couple of others.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I do! I always respond to thank those who left me a comment at the very least and will try to answer questions or react to something specific if they have called it out. Fandom is about interaction.

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I suppose that depends on how one defines angst. Intensive Care ends with both Cody and Obi-Wan gravely wounded in bacta tanks. But None of Us Perfect ends with an OFC giving Anakin advice that will ultimately fail because...you know...Vader. So one of them is what I would maybe call "modern angst" in that fandom seems to have more specific definitions of it now but the other seems like a somewhat happy ending when we all know it's really not and never could be.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Honestly? I have no idea. These days, I tend to only write happy/fluffy sort of stuff, so most of them end well. Strictly Ballroom is about Waxer and Boil's first kiss and it's pretty sweet and happy, I think.

Do you get hate on fics? To date? No. Will I eventually? Probably? I dunno. I'm pretty small potatoes in the fic world....I don't have the kind of spotlight that draws hate.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, I suppose that I do. 98% of it is clonesex, but there is a side of het in there with Thire and an OFC because when I started writing smut, I needed to do it with the kind of sex I am familiar with.

Do you write crossovers? I have written one crossover in my life. It is not on AO3.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I am aware of, no.

Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, but it was a million years ago in a fandom far, far away.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes.

What’s your all-time favorite ship? This question gives ME angst. I am not a shipper by nature and I've never had an OTP. In TCW, I very much enjoy Rex/Cody and it probably edges out my fondness of Codywan a little.

What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? I have about 15K written as a sequel to None of Us Perfect and I really would like to finish it because I started it when the Kenobi series aired as a sort of tribute to my friend Alex, who passed away before she could see it. I'm also just really fond of that OFC and would like to tell more of her story. But it's such a personal project that gets me deep in my feels, so it can be hard to work on.

What are your writing strengths? If the comments are to be believed, I'm somewhat funny? I do think I can turn a decent phrase from time to time, too.

What are your writing weaknesses? I used to write in past tense and, back then, I think I was pretty good at action, but now that I'm in present tense, I don't think that's true anymore. I struggle with it not reading staccato (he did this, then he did that, then this happened), so I actually tend to avoid it.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I tried it once with that crossover mentioned above, but did it phonetically because I wanted the readers to have a sense of how it sounded instead of just looking at words in a language they didn't speak. I don't think I would do it again aside from a word here or there as needed.

First fandom you wrote for? Highlander: The Series

Favorite fic you’ve written? I have a very soft spot for the second HL fic I wrote, which is probably still online somewhere, but I'm not going to try to link to it because it's under my real name (because that's how we rolled in 1997). Here and now, under the cover of usernames, it's probably A Brighter Star than You.

Adrien, Marinette. 59k When Adrien Agreste is scheduled to go to a Military School in Germany, Chat Noir must make a critical decision. Does he give up his Miraculous? Or does he give up Adrien? Zuko; Toph; Jack. 196k Through the spite of the spirits or plain rotten chance, a door that would have been better left untouched has opened. On the other hand, with Fire and Earth as one's allies, sometimes escaping is the easy part.

The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris Avatar: The Last Airbender Teen. Family/Friendship. Zuko; The Gaang. 36k Some people are born with soulmarks. Zuko has them, but his grandfather burned them off because they "make you weak." Team Avatar has a few things to say about that.

And he considers it a good day, magic-wise, if he hasn’t set anything on fire.

Uncle Bilbo Is Not Going On Your Adventure by Erisah_Mae Lord of the Rings Gen. Family. Bilbo, Frodo, Thorin, Gandalf. 16k Gandalf assumes that he is going to be able to bully Bilbo into coming along on the quest for Erebor. You know what they say about people who assume... Bilbo's not going, and nothing Gandalf can say is going to change his mind.

Watashitachi wa Roger kaizoku desu (we still stand proud) by stereden One Piece Teen. Family/Hurt/Comfort. Buggy; Shanks, Roger Pirates. 280k The Roger Pirates disappeared after their Captain's death, and were happy enough to let the Marines forget about them. Until the Marines decide to execute their Captain's son, that is.

What the Cat Dragged In by Kryal Marvel/Miraculous Ladybug Gen. Friendship. Tony; Adrien; Marinette. 70k Tony's pretty sure it's written into cosmic law somewhere: superheroes are not supposed be cute. Apparently, no one's told these two. He’s okay with that.

While the Ring Went South... by ThunderaTiger Lord of the Rings Gen. Friendship. The Fellowship. 145k For two weeks, the Fellowship wandered south from Rivendell making for Caradhras, yet Tolkien tells us almost nothing of this journey. Behold the missing scenes!

“It’s not really the Under, though. Space is pretty liminal here. Gravity is just a concept. If we push through the perceptions and find concrete substance, we’re really next to time. So even though you fell, it wasn’t really down. It was sideways. Not that it matters. However we are is what we perceive. It’s all the same in the end.”

“So this is-” Lawrence screws up his face, trying to think about any of that information in a way that sticks. “This is the Sideways? The Adjacent? The Next-Door?”

Din chuckles, or swallows their own teeth. Lawrence can’t tell from the sound. “You’re starting to understand.”

When they pull up, there’s a group of guys loitering beside the door, smoking. One of them glances over and nods at Rune. Jet turns in time to see her roll her eyes while taking off her helmet.

“I thought you said no punching people.”

“I meant it!” Rune grabs his arm and holds it. “This is a gym. I full intend for us to punch bags made for punching.”

Jet shakes his arm but she doesn’t let go. What is happening?

The same guy wanders over from the rest, stomping out his cigarette on the pavement. “Hey, Rune. Who’s this?”

“This is Jet,” Rune answers, very blandly, like she doesn’t want to be conversing with him.

Oh good, Jet can already feel his instincts creeping up his spine. Days of peace are overrated. If they do end up punching people, he’s fine with that. “Nice to meet you,” he says, equally blandly.

she comes in quietly dripping black lace like ink off a letter left out in the rain and it drags behind her - staining the carpet, the walls; she lifts a finger to trace your expression like she wants to feel it deeper than her skin and it settles like a dust cloud over her hair - staining the strands, her neck;

By silent consent, they stayed close together while trekking through another long white hallway after the red room. After arriving at the mouth of a cave-like staircase, Rothis took the lead, not because he thought Quileya was afraid, but because he didn't want to show his own fear. A brave face was almost as essential to a mission like this as bringing along the proper equipment. Not that it was wise to ignore caution when poking around in Its territory, but courage was often the most important tool a wizard could carry.

The staircase, besides being black and dark and wide enough only for two people to pass each other, also seemed endless. Around and around the two wizards stepped, with Rothis holding a wizard's light in one hand to show the way. Although he could not see her, Rothis knew that Quileya was preparing her spells, reciting in her head eight of nine words to a killing spell, or a shield spell, among others. He tried to do the same. If not for Quileya's interpretation of the pattern messages from the red room, he wouldn't have felt so nervous. But the words kept rebounding in his mind. Enter the chamber of restitution; the debt will be paid; life will end.

Daisies grow under the junipers down in the valley. They turn red up in the hill, where they drink the river and blush all day. It doesn't hurt them, just changes their face.

I lay back on sweaters that need mending and poke holes in the ceiling and when it starts raining I think maybe I’ll just drown now. Maybe there are new worlds at the bottom of the sea. My house is underwater when the sun comes back outside and I’ve grown roots. There is a tree poking out of my windows, draped in honeysuckle and last night’s noodles.

I dig my way out of the driveway and build a monument to myself in the snow. Winter was ages ago. I’m still sleeping it off.

Sharp teeth sank into his skin, the pain a welcome respite from the darkness. Marz opened his eyes with a shuddering breath, his body quaking from the effort of it. Two bright blue eyes stare up at him, unblinking. A mangy street cat let out a half-hearted growl as it released its bite into Marz’s arm. As it backed away, Marz lifted that same arm up above his head, wondering at the smooth skin of it.

Hadn’t he just been covered in dirt? In his own blood?

The second realization jolted him upwards. Marz sat panting in the alley where he’d fallen, the ground cold and icy beneath him, the air frigid around him. He moved his limbs around. They all followed his commands, as energetic as ever, and none of them were covered in either dirt or blood. Instead, on his wrist sat a bracelet.

Rodney slammed his hands onto his desk, coffee mug shaking. All eyes flashed to him, the lab falling silent.

“Alright,” He spat. “Which one of you did it?” He squinted his eyes, running them over the tense faces in the room before standing slowly. “I know it was one of you,” He huffed, “It had to be one of you.” His voice rose steadily, “-and when I find the person responsible.”

He started pacing, shoulders back, hands waving around wildly, “Oh-ho, just you wait and see.” He shook his head back and forth, teeth grinding, "You'll wish you never messed with me. You think you've seen me mad before?" He rubbed his hands together, "My blood sugar is dangerously low and I haven't slept in two days," He threw up two fingers stiffly.

He stopped suddenly, whipping back to face everyone before pointing around the room. “You idiots better start talking or you’re all getting in trouble,” He yelled, body shaking in rage, cheeks flushed, eyes flashing.

Dr. Coleman stood suddenly, knocking into her desk, “The mouse looked so sad, I just had to let it go.”

“I-I forgot to recalibrate the measuring instruments yesterday,” Dr. Simpson stuttered, “I'll do it this instant.”

Dr. Lindstrom rubbed his neck, “I didn’t mean to leave the toolbox on the west pier, I really didn’t, how'd I know a wave would wash it away?”

“It is only the one picture, I will delete right away.” Dr. Kusanagi said, blushing heavily.

Dr. Abrams eyes widened, “I’ll bring the computer back I promise, I-I was just borrowing it.”

“I had no idea Dr. Bryce was married, I swear.” Dr. Watson babbled, his face pale.

Everyone turned and stared at Watson.

Rodney cleared his throat loudly, they looked back at him in fear. “Right… I don’t care about any of,” He flapped his hand, “That.” He shot a death glare, “What I want to know is... Who took my chocolate bar?” He pointed at his desk drawer, “I left it right here this morning.” He bared his teeth, “I know one of you snuck over here and took it, I just know it.”

All the doctors glanced around the room blinking at each other. Rodney shook his head, “Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.” He turned on Dr. Zelenka, “Did you take it, Zelenka?” Rodney crossed his arms, “You’ve been suspiciously quiet.”

Radek pushed his glasses up his nose and leaned back in his chair, “Well, I did not do any wrongs so I have nothing to say.”

Rodney stepped toward him, eyes crazy, “No, It has to be you," He shouted, his head shaking, "I should have known,”

“Rodney, calm down,” Radek held his palms up. "None of us took your chocolate,” He placated.

"Calm down!? No, I know you did something," He wagged his finger, "If you don't admit to something then, then I'll know it was you who stole my chocolate."

"Rodney, this makes no sense." Radek frowned, brow wrinkling.

"Either you admit to something or you're guilty." Rodney yelled.

Radek sighed loudly, "Fine, if you must know something then," Radek tapped his fingers in thought, "I did curse at you in Czech during our chess match the other day." He rolled his hand, "Happy?"

Rodney squinted his eyes again, opening his mouth to retort when Dr. Kavanagh walked into the lab munching on a mostly finished chocolate bar, a corner of it still wrapped in its foil.

Rodney pointed a finger at him, grinning madly. “Ah-ha! I got you, you weasel!”

Kavanagh stopped mid-chew, his eyes wide, “What?” He asked, mouth full of chocolate.

“You stole my chocolate bar,” Rodney growled, rounding his desk toward the man.

Kavanagh swallowed, placing a hand on his chest defensively, “I did no such thing.”

Rodney got right up in his face, flailing his hand at the chocolate bar, “The evidence is right there.”

Kavanagh looked around the room. “I found it in my lab pocket, I swear. Most of it was snapped off anyway.”

Rodney stood back grimacing, “You found a chocolate bar,” He said, using finger quotes. “A mostly eaten one and decided to what? Just finish it?” He tightened his lips together, “That lie is completely ridiculous.”

Kavanagh frowned, “It's the truth.” He said through clenched teeth.

Rodney waved his arm, “Who in their right mind ingests a mostly eaten chocolate bar that they just found in their pocket?" He crossed his arms, "That makes absolutely no sense.”

“Hey, there isn’t a ton of chocolate around here so I figured, why not,” Kavanagh shrugged.

Rodney shoved his finger into Kavanagh's chest, “You’re a sneak, a weasel, and a liar.” He leaned back, “And now you’re in charge of the sewage leak instead of Zelenka.”

Kavanagh’s mouth dropped, “You can’t be serious.”

“As a heart attack, Kavanagh," He puffed up his chest, "That's not all, you're going to talk to those marines about their shower issues, remove the gunk from device X-02, and then check all of our equations at the end of the day."

Kavanagh waved his arms, “Dr. McKay, come on, I’m telling you the truth, I swear.”

"I'll never believe your lies!" Rodney shouted.

Radek slipped out of the lab, his lips quirking up as the voices got further away. He hummed happily before popping a piece of the stolen confection into his mouth.

idk the bit about Rodney being misogynistic bc he got taken advantage of by an older woman feels kinda uncomfy. like it veers too close to a justification for his misogyny. (ik in a real person this wouldn't like excuse his actions but since he's a fictional character it's like kinda trying to paint his worse actions in a more positive light, yk?) and like in real life people don't become misogynist/etc for like. a particular reason like that. seems kinda iffy idk

don't mean that as an attack on you or op or anything, sorry if I came off to harsh or anything! just kinda made me a lil uncomfortable (bc like I have seen similar things with other characters in the past and it always seems a lil sketchy to me)

first of all, you don't have to apologize. I get harsh anons sometimes, and they don't often feel the need to explain themselves lmao. also, I love getting asks like this; they make me all thinky :)

and you're absolutely entitled to your feelings of discomfort! while we're talking about fictional characters (which are vehicles for all the nasty or complicated thoughts & feelings that would get us shunned in polite society), discourse surrounding them still reflect a lot of things outside fandom (i.e. in the 'real' world). there is still that responsibility to be careful with the beliefs and ideas we promote.

having said all that, Rodney McKay is definitely the epitome of a 'problematic fave'. while he is a protagonist in the narrative sense, some of his more obvious flaws can make him a difficult character to like (or in my case, to justify liking heh).

as for the whole backstory headcanon, I can understand why it wouldn't sit well with many people. it does seem a bit shoe-horned and, having seen the same kind of justification for other Favorite White Male Characters' terrible behavior in other fandoms, I can definitely see where you're coming from.

(btw, I can't speak for OP but I'm glad you sent this ask, so at least I'm afforded the opportunity to reclaim my honor explain myself haha)

any kind of abuse should never justify horrible actions or behavior that one has been given a chance to change or rectify. in this case, if Rodney had been a victim of an older, female sexual predator in his youth, then that still doesn't excuse his misogynistic tendencies (and outright sexist comments & actions). it can certainly explain it, though, which is what I find so compelling about the idea.

the thing about Rodney ( & Stargate + all its characters) is that he's very much a product of his time. while today's media still exhibit a lot of backward tropes and tasteless stereotyping, we've started to find more and more artists & creators who are willing to apply nuance and care to their writing / art. though I'm sure pioneer Stargate fans have made their metas and criticism of Rodney already, his flaws as a character are even more easily brought into sharp relief now because he is not the kind of character that ages well.

if you've been following me for quite some time now, you probably have an idea why I like him. it's not the easiest thing to be, a Rodney fan, but I always make it a point to not excuse any of his bad traits. however, it's also no fun if all I do is bend over backwards to justify why I enjoy his character so much, which is why (since his writing is so inconsistent and there are so many gaps to his backstory) fans like OP and I, whenever we're given the opportunity, try to come up with bits of headcanon to tie a few loose ends together.

I certainly won't fight anyone about it, and I'm very much welcome to arguments that would debunk these ideas, but I'm acknowledging it to be a pretty neat concept. do I think real people (or even fictional characters) who are as terrible with women as Rodney is must have been abused by women when they were younger? hell no. does the headcanon make some kind of sense for why he is the way he is (which, again, is more a product of bad writing than any deliberate characterization)? I think it does.

so it's really more, 'if Rodney had been sexually abused by an older woman when he was younger, then that contributed to his misogyny,' and less, "if Rodney is misogynistic, then he must have been sexually abused by an older woman when he was younger'. there's an important difference that (I'm not even gonna euphemize this because it is rampant) so many fans defending their faves often miss.

I love Rodney for all the bits that I love about him, and I try to appropriately handle all the rest that I don't. what I wouldn't give for Rodney to have had better and consistent writing (one that, while not necessarily erased, at least properly addressed his flaws). that's why I like Trinity a lot even though he messed up so much in that episode. it had been an opportunity for growth.

End of the Year Creative Wrap-Up

1) What is your favorite thing you created? Which work are you the proudest of?

I’ve written more this year than I have my entire life put together, which isn’t saying a lot, but it does make it hard to narrow down. :P For now, I’ll say St. Judy’s Comic, All That Remains in My War-Ravaged World, and Mac + Breakfast + Jill + Dreams.

2) Is there anything else you are proud of that you achieved this year?

Okay, this isn’t a creative thing, but. I’ve got this chronic thing called Hashimoto’s disease, which makes me feel generally exhausted and sick pretty much always. I go through phases where it’s not particularly debilitating, but I’ve spent the last year and a half essentially bedridden, which meant I had lots and lots of time to write stories and do art. The second half of last year and the first half of this year, I was more creatively productive than I think I’ve ever been, and it felt AMAZING. I couldn’t be physically productive, so making pictures and stories sort of started to be my day job. Flash forward to about, mmm, July/September-ish of this year, which finds me so tired even scrolling on my phone while flopped, otherwise motionless on my bed, makes me ache with weariness. And let’s not even mention the brain fog. I’m suddenly so tired I can’t even do the tiny things I was doing to be productive before, and I start to feel guilty because I gotta do SOMETHING, right?

Well. I’m learning that I am doing something. I’m surviving, and I’m doing my best to grow and take care of myself and encourage the people around me, and for right now? That’s enough. Doing my best today might not look the same as it did a year ago or a month ago or even a day ago. And that’s okay.

It’s been a hard lesson to accept, and one I expect I’ll always be learning it to some extent, but I feel like that’s probably my biggest accomplishment this year. :)

3) Did you explore anything new this year? (A new way to be creative, a trope you didn't write before or an idea you hadn't thought of earlier, etc.)

I got really into digital art, which has been soooo fun. I started a giant AU that scares the living daylights out of me, and I’ve been part of a fic collab which is so utterly rad on so many levels. I wrote a fic in my best attempt at the style of Cormac McCarthy and failed miserably, but had a splendid time nonetheless. It was also, incidentally, my first fix-it fic.

4) Which work gave you the most difficulty? What was your biggest creative challenge this year?

Sat Phone + Heat Stroke + GPS was a struggle to get through, but I was pretty satisfied with it in the end. It’s also been a fun challenge to figure out the best way to do a writing collab when the authors are on different sides of the universe, but I’m happy to say, I think we figured out a pretty decent balance!

5) Which work brought you the most joy?

Warmth, maybe? It’s art, not a story, but it took a lot of work and it was kind of a breakthrough for me at that point, and I was just so happy with the vibe it gave me. I also loved doing Sky Full of Stars SO much. And my guys, I had the best time with So Happy Together. Don't judge.

6) Which of your works do you think people should check out?

Asdjfksadfakhdafda. Well. All my stuff is up on AO3, and everything that’s not an art is also up on FF.N. I’ve got an increasingly large repertoire of MacGyver (2016) stuff, a slowly but steadily growing pile of Stargate: SG-1 content, some NCIS: New Orleans, a few Jack Ryan (2018) fics, plus a few other miscy misc things. I think it’s all gen/found family feels except That One Jack Ryan Fic that almost did me in. I’d be thrilled and honored if anyone wants to check any of it out! Y’all welcome by my fire any time.

7) Do you have creative plans for next year? Is there anything exciting you are currently working on?

[glares at Prison Break AU] I don’t wanna talk about it.

Kidding. I’ve got a bunch of smol things and a few biggish things and that one heckin lorge thing in the works, and I’m really excited about all of it. I’m mostly making Stargate fic at the moment, and I’m really excited to explore those characters more. I also got an art commission from someone that’s making me fangirl a little, and I’m pretty psyched about that! I think my main plans are just to keep growing my skills, though, and hopefully challenge myself.

8) Lastly, any words of wisdom or anything else you would like to share?

This applies to creative pursuits, but also just. Life. Be gentle with yourself, love. Your fic didn’t turn out as beautifully as you imagined? So what? I garuntee you your readers aren’t going to see it that way, and you’ve grown in writing it. Your art was messier than you planned? That’s okay! You’ve made an important step toward your goals! You haven’t produced anything creative in months? Don’t worry. You’ll find your mojo again. For now, it’s okay to feed your muse and let her rest. Do your best each day, whatever that looks like, and learn to be proud of that. Give yourself the same grace you’d give to a friend, and I think you’ll start to see yourself in a different light. I have, anyway.
