Info dumping huh? Well then.

I have been the biggest fan of this one ship for as long as I remember. Back in high school, I developed an interest in Homestuck. I obsessed over John Egbert specifically.

As I read fanfiction and looked at fanart, no ship sparked. I didn’t really care. I would read and yeah it’s cute and blah blah blah not my OTP.

Then the worst thing could have happened.

I looked at a crack ship and then I was fxcked. The more I thought about it, the more I loved it. Karkat who? Dave who? Dirk who? Sollex and Eridan who? Literally everyone that’s a common ship WHO?

It didn’t stick with me.

Want to know what stuck?

Caliborn.

I had this idea of Calliope getting to John first and then breaking up for one reason or another.

Then Caliborn and John date or live together for other reasons.

Calliope doesn’t really come into the equation anymore or show up in my daydreams.

I don’t why, but I thought it was adorable if John just got bothered by Caliborn at every turn. They’d bother and fight and just it was cute how much they antagonized.

Then I started developing my trans Headcanon and June eventually makes her first appearance without her being June. It’s only recently (late 2022? - 2023) that I heard the name June and went from there.

I would draw and write fanfiction after fanfiction adding and subtracting details.

June stays 8ft tall and Caliborn is slightly shorter by a few feet or inches.

Caliborn gets rid of the half shaved hair look for short curly hair.

I couldn’t stop doodling John all over my school work to the point my science teacher recognized him when I gave her a little quiz. She had a bearded dragon in the classroom and I loved holding them during class :3

I had a ton of ideas and a lot of them were problematic tbh so I’m still curving them out of my head for far better ideas.

No matter what fandom I became a part of John/ June x Caliborn never left me. I didn’t want to really read fics anymore since no one writes my ship.

Does anyone actually do pixies and Crocker and Harley and Egbert family dynamics? Do they ever have them interacting like a big extended family?

If I had the urge, I’d write my AU ideas more. (I’m kinda stuck at the moment, work burns me out to much and too often that I don’t have motivation to get through the one? Shot I have)

I am going to attempt to redraw this political romance fancomic I drew a long time ago to update it with my newest version of John/ June. That means she will be June. If I could find the notebooks I had.

With my inability to write I’m stuck with lackluster chapters and get nothing done. I need some form of energy boost for my creativity. It’s at an all time low at the moment, being used for other fandoms.

Like this Transformers AU that got me in a chokehold.

The messy Age thing with Sari, it’s because I plan of having her die at some point (trauma) and I can’t in good conscience do that to a 3-5 year old (it’s by electrocution).

Yeah it’s messed up, but the world of Transformers is equally if not more messed up and morally grey :3

At least Ariel (Black Arachnia) and Sari get to become extensions of Unicron and Primus!

BIG THINGS ARE COMIN' YALLS WAY, AND HERE THEY ARE!!!

So, as you all know, 100 followers, which is super epic mind you and I'm still squealing about it.

But I feel the reason I have so many is because of my ROTTMNT fancomic, and I'm glad to say that I'll be getting back to it whoever I can! I'm not really sure when, but be on the lookout~!

BUT, continuing it, I think I need to explain that it's not necessarily some Future Fancomic, it's actually a little AU!

Its called 'The Last Hope AU' and from the name you can probably get it already... Okay maybe no-

So, Mikey knows the Multiverse, he knows how space time continuum can bend at the will of time travel or mystic abilities, and knows there's multiple universes where the Krang don't win, where they didn't even show up in the first place... But there's one universe, one that decided to twist time to change the future they had before, to make it better.

That one universe, could change everything, could change their future, the one they've been given, it's their last hope, cause if it goes right, there's a chance that the Krang of their universe could be sent back to their prison... Casey Jones just has to complete his mission- er- well- the other universe Casey.

So the AU takes place during the Krang takeover, and also kind of an 'After The Krang Are Gone' since they have to replenish, or just- learn to lie in the desolate wasteland that's left of their world.

Soanyways, thats kinda what to expect of the AU!!

And the NEXT thing is... I'm making a Fic!! Specifically a Donnie x Tamsin Fic. Not sure where I'll post it, probably get a AO3, but I'll figure it out once I get a chapter planned out, but for now, I'll be explaining the fics basic plot!

It takes place after The Mad Dogs have successfully sent back the Krang, all recovering and getting New York back on its feet.

Tamsin and Donnie are... A bit complicated, they haven't exactly expressed how they feel for one another, and it's obvious is getting on both their nerves.

It doesn't help the fact Tamsins parents had just come back from a long business trip to see a destroyed New York and their daughter nowhere to be found.

Once she finds her parents, they are immediate to announce they are leaving- completely moving away from New York and back to Tamsins hometown... Wyoming.

Obviously the Hamatos are a bit hurt they have to give up their friend, saying their last goodbyes before she's finally gone.

Now, flash to six years later, and Tams is 23, and just graduated college, people wondering what she will do now that she's finally put of her parents house and graduated, her answer... She's going right back to New York to find some work... And maybe meet some old friends and mend some broken ties with a certain softshell... But that last option is just if she has the time! Right?

Gonna be honest, aside from fandom events/celebrations I'm prob not gonna be very active here again, on account of busy-in-general but also, my side-accounts are still always more art-oriented.... I like to post my own arts hehe x3 so I guess I'm writing abt this as a gentle reminder to myself that it's alright to not be active & how much I really enjoy posting my own work when possible.

some more thoughts on this under cut! the blog will stay mostly usagi chronicles related with reblogs related to other usagi stuff and tmnt but I will try to keep it to my own art as I originally intended.

right now I've also been obsessing again over the Tintin fancomics and animations by @/professorcalculusstanaccount (not gonna tag them bc this is not directly related) and their work (+ just ruminating on my own old stuff) has been inspiring me enough that I'm thinking of returning to my og comics again. just in a... very subtle way. i don't like drawing attention to myself as much(as much as I should at least) and I wanna take a lot of babysteps to get back to building those up again.

for my SRTUC/TMNT2003&ROTTMNT crossover fic, I am thinking now that I want to take a similar approach in that it is mostly images, some larger text. bc I realized I do not actually enjoy writing long spans of prose. like. I enjoy making comics bc I am more used to those, but also, I am imagining things much more visually so it is hard for me to put some of these into text form at all times. I think that's why I probably haven't written this fic properly or finished any of my old fic. So a pretty normal "I explain my fic/AU idea" post, but I would like to try it in a concentrated way. I dunno how I would format this crossover on AO3 for example, but here in tumblr I could put them neatly under a cut and write away. It would be cool if I had the energy for animations/comics too bc those, while taking more time than writing, are far more enjoyable on the whole to make (but again, I am much more used to them)

I also want to explore more of a genfic (general "genre" fanfic) look at crossovers. As much as I like the Yuinardo/Leochi (Yuichi x Leo) ship, I also really enjoy exploring more unusual dynamics and situations in fanfic haha x3

my health's been slowly declining this week again and i haven't noticed next to work so I'll try to keep phone and personal internet time to a minimum now. sjdnddj i also just haven't had the energy for new art in general, so I'm basically going into spring hibernation until the next big spike in free time.

but hey! things I look forward to posting about more are some of the short comic thumbs I've been doing! I've fanart mostly for usagi chronicles right now but I'm also probably gonna post other short sketches I've done on my regular fandom art/ sketchblog, @aghhtdraws . There's a Chi/Ki (Chizu x Kitsune) doodle post I wanted to do and also a few other Usagi sketches I wanted to post.

I also like to write analysis of shows I like often enough, but writing is usually very taxing for me if it gets too long so I try to avoid it unless I have a very strong idea. Wait... have I been writing essays this entire time??? x3

I'll still tag those as #analysis bc that makes sense for me as a short tag and I don't really keep to an essay format as much, but yeah, you can block that or #aghhtposts if u don't wanna see those xP

Heads up, when I read fanfic, I typically prefer stuff with a lot of worldbuilding and dedication to side characters as well - so not all of these are gonna be light and fluffy. Also, I’ll just give my take on the fics and you can read the descriptions yourself if you click on the link.

This is the LOTR/Hobbit fic to end all LOTR/Hobbit fics. Genuinely the best LOTR/Hobbit fic of all time. Maybe the best FIC of all time. There’s such an attention to details and such a nuanced, complex, and expansive plot. So many characters as well, and all of them are given such care in their development and creation. Like, NO character is spared from character development, growth, or even being featured at least once. Even side characters and OCs, who you will come to love. You will learn more about Middle Earth in this fic than you would in trying to read the Silm. This fic is amazing, I think any LOTR/Hobbit fan should read it at least once in their life. Like, I genuinely cannot convey in words how amazing this fic is and how much it means to me. It’s also longer than all of the LOTR books combined. Also, ALL of this fic is canon-compliant. Not strictly Bagginsheild, but the ship is one of the main focuses there. 

Retelling the Hobbit

GOD. This person is making a HOBBIT FANCOMIC OF THE BOOK. It’s AMAZING and I’m blown away by their skill. I’m not sure if it’s Bagginsheild yet since it’s a retelling, but the ship is tagged. Regardless, this is amazing and we should all give this creator some major support. Plus, it’s all framed as Bilbo telling Frodo a bedtime story which is 🥺

Customary

This is probably the shortest on the list. But it’s still cute! It’s a quick read and involves some confusion around customs and such, which I love for the drama and the humor. 

Birthday Wishes

Thorin is SO FUCKING STUPID in this one and, for that, it’s a JOY to read. Himbo rights. I absolutely adore this one. Also, features a lot of the company as well which is a plus. And the idea of platonic kissing, which I’m a fan of!

A Passion for Mushrooms

God, this one is so cute. If you need a multi-chapter of something just about their relationship, I HIGHLY recommend this one. It’s like the perfect mix of “mutual pining but neither knows” and “they are both fucking idiots”. And mushrooms. Mushrooms are so important in this fic. I love mushrooms. Also, there’s some background Kiliel, which I personally appreciate. 

so many beautiful reasons

I have a thing about dwarvish courtship fics because they always mainly consist of: A) Thorin going to the company for help, which means we get to see more of the company and B) Thorin absolutely not understanding that Hobbits don’t have the same customs as them and getting so confused when his efforts to be romantic fly straight over Bilbo’s head. This fic has it ALL. God, it’s so cute. Misunderstandings, the drama, and Fili and Kili. Literally, what more could you want?

An Unexpected Addition

Oh, this one is cute. A lotta of other stuff happens as well, like political intrigue, plots to overthrow Thorin, fight scenes - it’s great. Also, BABY FRODO is in it. Along with a lotta of Fili and Kili. A fucking joy. 

The Courting Habits of the Line of Durin

I’m actually only on chapter four of this one right now! But I’m enjoying it, a lot. Fun times, cute stuff, and my BOYS, Fili and Kili. 

Modern AUs

Under New Management

This fic seriously fucked me up but like in the best ways. It’s not exactly Bagginsheild - like the ship is there but this fic focuses mostly on Fili and Kili who are my BOYS. It’s essentially a fic about healing from past trauma, and how messy that can be. MAJOR warnings for CSA mentions, child abuse mentions, graphic depictions of suicide attempts, and graphic depictions of self-harm. Like, despite the heavy topics, this fic is ultimately about healing from these things and I think all the topics are handled VERY well and respectfully. I HIGHLY recommend NOT reading it unless you are in a good mental place. Still, though, it’s amazing and the character dynamics and the world-building are absolute PEAK. One of my favorite fics. 

Nothing Gold Can Stay

God. God. I literally take a week out of each year just to go back and re-read this fic. It’s one of the BEST of all time in my opinion. Essentially, it’s a modern AU where Thorin is a king of a modern-day country, and Bilbo is hired as a tutor for his nephews. There’s political intrigue, espionage, drama, comedy, plot twists reconciling with family trauma, and - you guessed it - a whole lotta Bagginsheild. And of course, Fili and Kili, who I believe are essential to making any Bagginshield fic good. HIGHLY recommend.

Do you think we can bring back ROTBTD in 2021?

(Oh wow I mulled over this ask for quite some time. I hope this is somewhat helpful!)

If by "bringing back" you mean restoring the crossover to something close to its former popularity, then no, I honestly don't think we can. I think more than just a fandom, part of what made RotBTD so well-known back then is because it got picked up as a tumblr trend, and trends move on. Not to mention with the lack of new source material, the possibility of coming up with inspirations for fanworks (something that creators need, and i feel like this is particularly harder for crossovers) as well as topics to talk about are pretty limited, so it's understandable that most people who participate decided to leave for good after having their share of fun. This is just the way things are.

On a brighter note, it's not like the fandom is actually dead, far from it. The fans are very much still around; there are those who never left (salute to you guys, seriously), those who return (like me!), and those who get into this old fandom late. Discussions are still happening. New fanworks are still being made; lots of it! And though the traffic might be slower, I think a lot of people would agree with me that there's been something like a fandom revival recently.

And this is just my personal opinion, but I do think that what we have right now is even better than what we had back then. The community is much more chill. There’s a deeper appreciation and understanding of the four franchises as well as the characters that the earlier fandom frankly lacked. People are respectful about shipping. I can go on.

However, I understand that it could still feel less lively than the RotBTD fandom that you remember and wish to bring back. And I’m afraid I only have one advice to assuage that: try to reach out and engage more with the current community. 

Look for people who like the same characters/ships/AUs that you like and follow them. Reblog fanarts that you like and maybe even tell the artist what you like about their work. Comment on fics you enjoyed and maybe share it with others that might appreciate it too. Send asks to folks whose headcanons you’d like to see more of. Maybe join one of the discord servers and hang out there. Or if you haven’t found a particular thing you’d like to see, make a new post and just talk about it! 

Like I said before, many of us are still around and kicking, and I think it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that everyone here is open to having another person to talk to about our interests. So if what you're looking for is a livelier experience, simply chat and interact with other fans! After all, having like-minded friends/acquaintances/mutuals of some kind helps a lot in making fannish experience more fulfilling.

oh and please don’t read this as an imperative to be sociable, but rather as an assurance that it's okay to be more present in the fandom space!! If the idea makes you uncomfortable, there’s always the option to use the anon feature or only pop into the fandom tag once in a while. Just do what feels right for you, and remember that just because it's a smaller fandom now doesn't mean you can't have fun.

(Also a little off-topic but i feel like we often forget just how big BIG rotbtd was. It was like a giant stone soup collaboration across all types of media: fanfic, fanart, fancomic, gifsets, edits, RP blogs, fan videos, fan songs, animation, cosplays, fanzines, etc. It felt like everyone was doing it and pitched in with something new or at least knew about it and passed it around. Of course it would feel a lot emptier when we're being compared to that.)

Celebrating 10 years of Tangled!

Ah, I remember going to see ‘Tangled’ in theaters and I was ready to hate it. I was so upset that Disney had done away with their traditional hand drawn films, and on top of that the trailers for the movie irritated me because I was a stuck up animation snob who didn’t like this weird direction Disney had decided on. 

But as soon as the movies’ opening chase sequence started I was hooked. Every preconception I had vanished, and I was here for the ride whole heartedly. I immediately saw what they were going for and it hit all my story buttons. Horses: check. Awesome visuals: check. Swashbuckling: check. Great music: check. Forests: check. Pub fights: check. Characters in (shiny) uniforms: check. Obligatory Campfire scene: check. Epic Villain song: check. Great physical comedy: check. Frying pans: check. Unlikely duo going on a roadtrip where they are forced to learn about each other and grow as people: check. Visual storytelling: double check. Genuine heart: triple check. 

It just hit every single note for me, and I left the theater totally in love.

The holidays were spent endlessly listening to the CD I’d gotten as a gift. Just playing it over and over. I couldn’t get the movie out of my head. I had the video game, and played it several times (just replayed it again; still holds up), poured over production art and copied some of Glen Keane’s drawing for the film. I even wrote a few fanfictions, including like a forty page Flynn Rider story, that I’ve never shown to anyone. Really should dig that one out and give it a read... I spent months on it, and loved every second of it. 

A while after the theater release I went to DisneyWorld, and I actually bought the DVD there, in DisneyWorld, because it had just released. And instead of going on any rides I hunkered down in the hotel room with a Tangled themed birthday cake my friend surprised me with, and my Pascal plushie and watched ‘Tangled’. That was a really happy time in my life, and when I think back on that time, ‘Tangled’ is a big part of it.  It really inspired me, and it made me feel wonderful.

The series has equally meant a great deal to me, and spurred me to take (albeit very small) chances with my own artwork and storytelling. My friend is no longer with us, sadly. I wish I could’ve shared the series with her, - she would’ve really enjoyed it, I think. It stung a bit to think we couldn’t watch it together. But I’m happy I discovered the fandom and got to make new friends through the series. ^^ I’ve enjoyed every moment of being in this wonderful fandom – it’s full of so much talent, and passion, and friendliness. I really love talking about this movie and the series, and this fandom welcomed me and gave me that outlet. Times have been tough, but I can’t tell you how many times being dragged into an AU discussion, or seeing some beautiful fanwork, or knowing I had my fancomic to work on has pulled me out of a funk and brightened my day.

(Things are getting a bit sappy, now, so I’ll just wrap it up.)

Tangled is a very special little film. I’ve grown up with this movie, and I feel as if it’s made me a better person, in so many ways. It’s a movie that just gets me, on a personal level. The characters just feel like old friends, and they always brighten my day. I could wax on and on about everything the movie has done for me, the rough times it’s seen me through, how personally I relate to it’s characters and theme (artistic shut-in who is overly anxious/excited about every little thing? I feel called out), and everything I love about it, but that would take me days - many happy days to be sure, but I have comics to finish, and fanart to draw, and that old fanfiction to dig out. So I’ll just say:

Happy Birthday Tangled!

Puzzleship JP & KR Fancomic Recommendation List

UPDATE (19-12-2020): Added two more artists and two more titles on the Japanese lists!

I don’t consider myself as someone very tidy and organized, but I just like making lists of the things I love, somehow. Hence this post. I haven’t been in the fandom for long but I thought I’d share some of my favorites primarily from two sites: pixiv and postype. Most of the postype ones are behind paywall, and I will mark them differently.

Some of my favorites come from the same artists, so I’ll also link their pixiv profile on top of my favorite work of them.

(I actually bookmarked a lot and picking them isn’t an easy task, so I will update this step by step. If you see only a link of an artist, that’s the reason, but I can guarantee you will love their works! Feel free to recommend me yours through reblogs or DM as well!)

Japanese

Artist: CYHGM

She is a Chinese and is more active on Weibo (she posted tons of puzzleship there, but my Mandarin is beyond rusty so I could only cry in despair lmao), but she has two fancomics that I absolutely adore of. Those two mentioned fancomics are:

The Past and The Future. You can check my translation for this one here. It tells about Atem who gets transported to 3000 years later before his coronation, and that’s where he met post-canon!Yugi. Just... everything about this comic is so wonderful. I teared up at the last page, not gonna lie ;_;

The Pharaoh and The Fairy: An Ancient Egypt-slash-fantasy AU featuring the S0/TOEI casts. The fairy Yugi was saved by Atem, and it’s an obligatory for fairies to grant their savior’s wishes. However, Atem doesn’t exactly have something he wants of, and this confuses Yugi on how he should repay him back. Pure undiluted sugar, and fairy!Yugi is just so cute.

Arguably one of the most popular Puzzleship fanartists in the JP fandom (look at their number of followers on Twitter, man), but maybe it’s also due to the fact they were in AoT fandom too. They’re mostly active on Twitter, and if you also watch Zexal, they draw tons of Yuma-centric pairings too. They have released lots of books, and their prices on the reseller sites are... well, let’s just say, unbelievable. Just to show how famous they are. 

From everlasting to everlasting: Set after DSOD. A mysterious figure appears in front of Atem, claiming to be his queen. Everyone in the after life somehow acknowledges this person, which makes him even more confused because he’s the only one unaware of this. On the living realm, Yugi who is on the way to his home got hit by a truck (isekai much??) and when he woke up, he suddenly plays the role of Atem’s queen. I’ve always adored Fushitas’ drawing, and this is no exception. The story is pretty simple, but is still good! The ending of this comic is everything I’ve always wanted from the canon lol. 

The King’s Guest: Ancient Egypt AU. The councils are starting to get worried because Atem shows no interest in marrying someone, so Shimon opens up a “chance” sort of for civilians to become “someone for the Pharaoh to talk with”. The civilian Yugi takes this chance right off the bat, and stuff happens? This one is just so sweet and the misunderstanding later in the story kinda cracks me up. I really love the way they build the two’s chemistry in here.

They only draw two puzzleship fancomics, but both are so good and explores the themes I’ve loved from the pairing.

The Lotus’ Devil: Set post-canon with a flashback. It tells about Yugi’s regret in the past where he wanted to show Atem a small pool supposed to be full of lotus flower only to arrive seeing them not blooming. Fast forward to the post-canon, he found out that there’s actually a monster residing on that pool. I really, really loved the ending scene of this one.

Who’s The Detestable, Fortunate Guy Here: I think this is set sometime in the canon story, although the exact timing is unclear. It’s a short comic of Yugi asking Atem to pretend to be his date and go on a “dating practice”. A very pleasant hurt-and-comfort kind of story, and who doesn’t love a story of them dating anyways? :”D

She doesn’t draw much YGO, but she has some Arc-V and 5D’s fanarts too if you watch the series! 

Hourglass: Sets after the Memory World arc. Yugi keeps hearing a strange sound inside his mind, and he finds out there’s a huge hourglass standing there, guarded by the will of Millenium Puzzle. Apparently, the hourglass is linked to Atem’s remaining time in the living realm? Anyways, the ending of this comic might look like a cliffhanger, but I personally think it isn’t. I love the theme this comic picks to explore and the way it is presented.

Present: Same setting with Hourglass, but this one focuses more on Atem sorting out his feelings about the Ceremonial Duel and what he has learned from Yugi in general. It’s a very nice extra detail that the canon slightly lacks of, and I just love... bittersweet stuff in general haha.

Are you the type who wants puzzleship to be full of happiness and fluff and nothing else? Well, she has a number of comics to fill that need! I actually love all of her works, but if I have to pick, these two are my favorite:

...Don’t Ever Leave Me Again: A short story about Yugi having a nightmare of where he was stuck in the fire accident at Otogi’s store. Well... this isn’t a fluff sort of, but it’s... a happy ending still? /shot

[Untitled]: A dialogue-less comic, but this is the sort of post-canon what-if that I really, really like. Atem stroking Yugi’s face while sleeping is just... so soft man....

The Soul Stays Awake: Post!DSOD. Atem comes back from afterlife in hoping that Yugi would be as happy as he is, but months after, Atem’s existence still hasn’t been registered on Yugi’s life just yet. Another post!DSOD take that I like which involves the fear of another farewell and uncertainty, but this is a good hurt-and-comfort. I swear, it’ll hurt you just... for a while. :”)

The Attack’s Aim: Set during the canon series. A short comic mostly portraying Yugi’s hidden strength but also the tenacity of duelist that is not only targeted toward the opponent, but also to Atem, without the person actually noticing it. The last page of this one is so... soft and gentle I had to put it into this list.

Often draw with S0/TOEI style, characters and characterization in mind. Their coloring in illustrations is so soft, plus artists who specialize in S0/TOEI style can’t be found so easily. Their comic style is not a manga-like one and they write the dialogues with handwriting, but if you can read hiragana and write and understand how kanji works (so you can write it on translation machine), their comics are easy to understand!

magenta: S0/TOEI AU where Yugi and Atem are two separate person. A short comic of Yugi lying under the rain as Atem searches for his whereabouts. I really love the way they portray the rain and the atmosphere surrounding the scene. Or maybe I’m just biased with rains in general, ahahaha.

Yuugi and Mao’s Stay Home: Same AU as above. Our two boys has to face the same shit we do IRL in this comic, which is quarantine. Atem offers to cook something for Yugi since he can’t eat outside. You love seeing Yugi eating stuff? This is a perfect comic for y’all.

Gemini: As Atem comes back to the living world, Yugi faces the dilemma of having being separated by “his other self” physically and mentally. A short comic, but the lines the artist used are so... beautiful. Like, the way they describe Yugi’s loneliness?? Just hits the park so much. 

Until The Hourglass Runs Out: Set after the Memory World Arc. As their farewell day goes closer, Yugi decides to give Atem a full control of his body at school so he could spend his time with Jounouchi and the gang more. However, things don’t go as smooth as Yugi had expected. If you like that little teeny weeny pain before the Ceremonial Duel, this comic perfectly suits the taste. 

see you sometime: Post-canon. Mahaad offers Atem a chance to meet Yugi in the living realm one more time, but with several conditions. Firstly, he could only stay for a day at maximum. Secondly, Yugi won’t be able to remember who he spent his time with after Atem hangs out with him. Thirdly, Yugi will not be able to “recognize” this Atem; he will only be registered in Yugi’s mind as a new classmate. A bittersweet comic in whole, but seeing the two having fun like a normal teenager would just makes me grin.

After The Rain: A dialogue-less comic, so everyone would be able to read this right away. A short comic of the two, but still very cute and wholesome!

The Tropics of Horus: Post!DSOD, Atem has to chase Kisara who lingers around Kaiba’s soul and he needs Yugi’s help to bring Kisara back to afterlife, but he has his own ulterior motive. This manga is so dialogue-heavy and might be hard to dissect especially if you don’t understand JP grammar and context, but the time spent trying to understand the meaning behind every words will be worth it. That much I guarantee. Just... everything about this comic, and how Atem’s “ulterior motive” connects to our boys’ adventure in canon series are so well planned. Christmas Day: S0/TOEI puzzleship hint (dark puzzle???). There’s something in store for Yugi in Christmas, but this one might surprise Yugi a lot. It’s not that the prompt of “Atem gets separated from Yugi temporarily” is uncommon, but it is still a sweet one and makes you smile throughout the pages.

Yugi’s 2020 Birthday Anthology: Rain and After End

This is an anthology consisting of four titles, but they share the same (or similar) setting where Atem is reincarnated, but he doesn’t remember his past (or has not yet, depending on how the story portrays it). Some are age-gap (adult!Yugi and high school student!Atem), so you might want to consider that if it’s not your cup of tea.

To Like Someone is to...: Age-gap setting. Mostly tells about how Yugi deals with his feeling as the reincarnated Atem in front of him turns out to have a feeling on him. I like how the story’s conclusion is that Yugi will sort it out slowly while also teasing Atem how he’s “too early” to date Yugi w.

In A Circle: A story about how the two met through an online chess game. Iirc Yugi works in a game company and Atem is sort of a famous e-sports player in this setting. There’s a lot of dialogue in this one and the app sometimes can’t process them very well, but I liked what I can understand from it! not very convincing is it haha i’m sorry i shouldn’t have done this

Familiarity: Age-gap setting, where Yugi becomes Atem’s caretaker. The comic mostly focuses on how Atem notices how kind (or too kind) Yugi is sometimes, but there are times where he feels distant. The plot where Atem gets into a fight with the other kid in his school because the kid mocks Yugi, and how Yugi just... accepts it even when Atem doesn’t want to say his reason of punching the kid is just.... god... I love this kind of age-gap setting like this I guess ;_;

Touchdown: Age-gap setting, but Atem is older in here (university student). The two goes to Atem’s university festival and they think about their own feeling when they got separated. On their way to drop Atem off, he confesses to Yugi, but Yugi is still unsure on his overlapping feeling between the reincarnated Atem and the Atem he knows. Make sure you play Motohiro Hata’s Rain and Aimer’s After Rain during the car scene to make the “rain” mood works even better :”)

Try For Point: A continuation of Touchdown, where Atem (like, the one from the past) visits Yugi in his dream and helps Yugi in sorting out is his feeling toward his reincarnated self. Atem’s advice is so sweet and there’s one certain line from this comic that I remember very deeply - there’s a part where he says, “If you don’t pull out the card, you won’t know what card it is, right?” to help Yugi clearing out his hesitancy ;w; at this point, I curse myself for not being able to understand Korean

Following a Character in Balan Wonderworld

This is mostly for my AU fancomic (Maestro of Misery) and for myself, so it's probably gonna be really disorganized and maybe hard to follow? If you're not interested feel free to scroll :)

Okay, so in this collection of nonsense, I'm gonna talk about how the game introduces characters; what's the difference between the main characters and the side characters? Also, some minor criticism on how the book deals with the characters.

When you start up the game, the only characters who get backstory before you start playing are Leo and Emma. Since there's no actual dialogue in these cutscenes we're left to assume what their problems are. For the most part, I don't really mind getting their backstories that way (I actually am more bothered with the placement of the cutscenes, and how it gives you little to no time to actually get to know and understand the character but that's another rant for another day). However, it does feel a little awkward. If I were to ever produce Maestro of Misery, I'd prefer going down the "show don't tell" route, which is what the game tried to do but didn't really do well in my opinion. Little Nightmares is a series that does "show don't tell" the best, and I wish that BWW could have told its story like Little Nightmares did.

That being said, I'm unsure of how to go about telling the story of my character, Kira (name might change? or I might use a character I already have that isn't being put to use for anything). While explaining her backstory/why she's at the theater in the first place would be very useful to the reader in order to better connect with her off the bat, I also don't really want the story to entirely be about her solving her problems; the story is supposed to be about Balan getting help. I don't know how feasible it would be to have her problems be solved in the act of her helping Balan. I may have to change the timeline of events in order to make it work out the way I want it to because again, I want the story to be about Balan going through his own issues - which will most likely be about spreading himself thin/neglecting to care for his own emotional needs.

Because of that, I think that maybe it would be best if, like in the game, Balan takes Kira through her own stage expecting to deal with some daunting issue when in reality it's not as bad as he expects. I think it would be really interesting to turn the tables and ask Balan to create his own stage. I may need to review some aspects of his character in order to properly portray what Balan's personal stage would be since they typically reflect some part of a character's psyche. Of course, we learn about the character by existing in their stage since it's such a deeply personal creation. I think that this will be beneficial to the medium I'd tell this story in (comic) since stages are so visual.

So yeah at the end of the day I'm mostly stuck between explaining Kira's backstory upfront at the very start of the comic, or having it explained later on. I may go the latter, and just make Kira a very charismatic individual. I tried to write it up quickly the other night and the flow did feel off explaining her upfront, yet I still understand the appeal of knowing who the main character is and what they're about before you start. But again! Kira isn't supposed to be crazy-important. Like yes, she's important, but she's more like The Doctor's companion in that she's an average person who acts as a link to further understand a wildly complex character who has gone through/committed atrocities beyond the understanding of the consumer.

fluff or angst? - I like to include both in my work. I draw from my own experiences, and most of the time those get turned into cute or humorous moments (i.e. fluff). That way when things fall apart, you actually care about that angst because you got to know and fall in love with the characters through the fluff.

favorite character to write? - I struggle to write one character in a vacuum. I don't know if you know about my Homestuck AU at all, but my favorite dynamic between characters to write is the one I developed between Spades Slick and Karkat Vantas. I haven't written a lot of Sonic related things, but I like to imagine how Shadow could be introduced to the Fleetway universe and interact with characters like Fleetway Amy, Tekno the Canary, etc.

favorite ship to write? - I don't really know how to answer this question. I am a very low drama person, so romantic entanglements, will they won't they, meet cutes, miscommunication, and other romantic tropes like those are more likely to aggravate me so I don't write those. But when a ship is already established and I'm writing for it, I don't write them particularly differently from any other combination of characters. The dynamic between their personalities is always most interesting to me, but that barely counts as a specific ship to write? Again, I don't know how to answer this question.

favorite fandom for write for? - I have written fanfiction for Homestuck, Transformers, and Mass Effect. Right now I'm most engaged with my Homestuck fanfiction, but my interests shift and change all the time.

do you/would you write smut? - Sometimes I imagine how characters would interact sexually, like their own ideas on what it means to them and how a sexual interaction between them might go. If I ever write it down, though, I'd be unlikely to share it. I don't think I'd give the people who are looking for erotica the experience they'd be seeking out.

fave fic you’ve written/fic youre most proud of? - My Junkon's Treasure fancomic was very ambitious and full of great ideas, but I was not able to complete it, which makes me sad. Out of things I've actually completed, Adding Fuel To Flames (another Transformers fan comic) gets into it more.

fave trope to write? - Found Family. I also like to write jokes and situational gags that make people laugh or smile. ESPECIALLY if the humor comes from the characters just being themselves and acting silly.

fave type of au to write? - Whatever you call an AU that takes everything about the canon and reconfigures it into a completely new story. I think that's called like, a reimagining?

how do you get yourself in the mood to write? - I listen to music I already know will get me in the groove, and lose myself in that.

what inspires your fic ideas? - All sorts of things! Usually it's a combination of thoughts that I'm having at any given time. My current Homestuck fic was inspired when I thought about Homestuck and The Iron Giant at the same time.

canonverse or au? - I like to stick as closely to canon as possible. If I wasn't interested in the canon then I wouldn't be making fan fiction for it! Even though my current fic project is an AU, I try my damnedest to keep the characters close to their canon personalities and include all the things I loved from the original work, just with my own spin on it to make it fit the new worldbuilding I did.

any fics planned? - Fleetway Amy Rose rescues Shadow the Hedgehog from Prison Island, and introduces him to the Fleetway canon while evading GUN.

Hey Chekhov, it has been a few years since I logged into tumblr and checked on your blog, but I thought of a question for you the other day. I cannot remember what it was. However I have a handful of other ones that came up since I've been thinking of you. A lot of them are direct and I hope they don't come off as abrasive. Most are based on the assumption that you are still in Japan. Question 1: Is the fact that LGBT is criminalized in Russia part of the reason you stay in Japan? (1/?)

Hey there, welcome back to tumblr! 

I’m going to put this under a cut so that it hopefully does not take up too much space on people’s dashboards, because it will get LONG!

I’m gonna preface this whole thing with first clarifying - 

I have not lived in Russia for the past… 17 years. It’s been a while. Although I’ve been back to visit family for prolonged periods for numerous occasions, it’s not quite the same as a permanent residence there. So take what I say about russia with a grain of salt.

Before I moved to Japan, I was living in the states. I was in the states for about 12 years. I imagine that will color some of my answers in a specific way. 

Question 1: Am I staying in Japan because Russian law criminalizes LGBTQ? 

No. I’m staying in Japan because I currently have a job in Japan and also because American healthcare sucks. I have national healthcare in Japan and I rather enjoy not going bankrupt if I have to go to the hospital. 

Now, granted, I’ve been propositioned by my grandparents and other family SEVERAL times (read: every time we talk on skype) to return to Russia and resume living there. The reason I refuse THAT is, by and large, because of the attitudes and laws towards LGBT in Russia. (: My spouse and I have even considered going to visit there, but we keep putting it off because we would have to take some significant safety risks, and it’s just dodgy. 

Question 2: Was I ever outwardly LGBTQ+ in Russia? 

No, not ever. Not beyond presenting androgynously in public (which I also tone down on when I’m over there). 

I am not out to ANYONE in my family except for my mother, and although I make my opinions on matters of LGBTQ+ stuff quite clear when I’m with family, I am personally not mentally up for the amount of arguing that would ensue were I to come out to them. 

Beyond that, my social circle of peers in Russia is nonexistent at this point. Any friends I used to have in my youth I’m no longer in touch with. When I go back, I interact with family and no one else. 

Question 3: How am I navigating Japan’s strict immigration laws? 

I’m not sure which laws you’re referring to specifically. I came in on a working visa, have renewed it multiple times throughout my contracts, and have now changed it over to a spouse visa. Aside from copious amounts of paperwork, I’ve not had any trouble. 

Question 4: Has my androgyny caused me trouble at the workplace because I work with children?

So far, no. At least not to my knowledge. I know that at least SOME people read me as androgynous because when I was new at the office, I had an older man straight up go up to me and say (in English) “You - man or woman?” 

Younger kids also can’t read me well and argue about my gender in front of me. Their teachers are usually very quick to ‘correct’ them, though. Teachers treat their inability to gender me on the first try as something embarrassing and seem to be mostly fine with my androgyny, perhaps finding it somewhat ‘unfortunate’ that I look the way I do. They’ve never been unkind about it, though, and my job has never been affected by it on a professional level. 

Question 5: Do I have a background in art + education?

I actually have a background in Linguistics - specifically the acquisition of languages (second languages… foreign languages…) I’ve never taken art classes except for a Generals course in community college. It’s just something I do as a hobby. 

BUT (segway time!)

Question 6: Does art provide a significant income for me? 

Yes.

Which is actually shocking for everyone involved, especially me, because I never foresaw my art as being profitable, which is why I never went to school for it. 

Now that my Patreon is thriving, I’m making QUITE the headway into repaying my student loans. Granted, I never thought it would be possible, but the fancomic I’m doing of the White Diamond AU gave my artwork so much more visibility that I’m now able to say I DO make a profit on my art and could probably continue to do so. 

No one is more surprised than me! I do think that having a background in art can give you more TOOLS to start with. You can definitely make a living on art but it takes a while to get the momentum of it started, so having a backup steady job like teaching (as you mentioned) helps you stay afloat while you figure out the creative niches you have to fill.

For your last question regarding racism:

Racism in Japan is different than racism in the US (duh). Most of it is actually directed at Korean and Chinese and southeast-asian immigrants living in the country. In some ways, there’s also racism towards black people and latino people and etc - but it looks different than racism in the US, or racism in Europe. 

I’m hesitant to say that white people experience ‘racism’ in Japan as such. There’s definitely xenophobia that’s running rampant in Japan as a whole, and there’s issues of fetishism on a HUGE scale - stereotypes GALORE! Some people literally try to get with a white person ONLY for the sake of having mixed-race babies because they are “cuter”. It’s uh. Super weird.

But frankly, that’s all really minor compared to what you get in the states. It will change, of course, depending on your race, but if you’re white, rest assured that you are likely to get special treatment in Japan instead of discrimination. (Though of course that comes with the bonus of having to field really weird questions based on myths perpetuated by being an isolated island country.)

If anyone else living in Japan wants to chime in, feel free, but that’s all I’ve got.

straight ships: *has incest, age gaps, abusive, toxic elements* anon: ... gay ships: *has all of the same things that a straight ship has, subtly implying they're both on equal terms, except it's two men/women* anon: "this is literally homophobia and it means you think gay people are predators!" straight ship: *insert that one meme of the guy smiling all confusedly* ????

There would be an argument to be made if ALL the m|m ships were like that in fandom, but: 1. Most m|m shippers usually prefer fluff, nice and romantic. The freaks such as your server are really the minority. It has always been like that. Compare the readings a fluffy simple story gets against a darkfic. The difference is fucking obvious. Even fics about couples who should be problematic (Rickmorty) will be fluffy on it’s majority and if incest is ever brought up, it’s only an obstacle or completely ignored, not the appealing factor per se. Same with Elsanna. Actually few shippers even like the incest factor, compare with the majority at least, they just enjoy how close the characters are to each other. That is how came out so many AU where they are not really related or fans argue about how they are not “really” family in the first place so it’s okay, it’s technically not incest. See any ship between the sibling from Umbrella Academy as another example. There is a big camp of people who insist “they were never siblings, they were just child soldiers” and those that are “I don’t care they are siblings, I like the characters”. ACTUAL incest shippers, who like the incest aspect, are far and few. 2. M|m people are just as capable of liking problematic content as anyone else because problematic shit can make things interesting, offer conflict, give it flavor. Have you even tried to read geicomi, m|m works by m|m authors? You can’t tell me that all of it is meant to be fluffy and wholesome. There are works like that and there those that aren’t at all. 3. You are literally never going to be able to just know the thought process of someone for shipping something unless they explained it to you, so assume instant malice is just jumping to conclusions. You might as well just assume that they eat salted apples before writing because why not.  4. Again, you COULD make a case if it was a trend that surpasses all other ships, maybe, in which you would have to include headcanon and the way people talk about those ships outside of fanfiction/fancomics, to truly grasp the perception of the majority of people and then take into account the source material. Make a m|m abusive ship out of a series that is full of abuse and horrible people doing awful things to each other cannot be counted the exact same way as a abusive m|m ship whose canon is as innocent and wholesome as anything can be, for example. And then you would have to add the established preferences of each shipper. Some shippers just like toxic element on their ship, whatever that ship is, while other shippers just see that dinamic appealing if it involve only those characters.  In other words, you could make that case but it would be a mess of variables that no fucking anti is equipped to do and thus their protest are very unlikely going to mean anything.
