This edit of an #AbandonedNewMexicoChurch was done entirely and exclusively using #InstagramFilters; more specifically, the #MayfairFilter. As a tour guide with 20 years of experience, I know so much more than the regular average #SouthwesternTraveler. I know of so many beautiful places that haven't become Instagram trafficked just yet... I plan to keep it that way as long as possible! Examining Instagram and Snapchat Filters: Their Impact on Body Image and Dysmorphia
Introduction
Popular social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat have included filters that employ augmented reality to change things like a person's appearance, skin tone, and body proportions. While using such filters can be fun and make photos look better, other people are worried about the damage they could do to self-esteem and the increase of eating disorders (Eshiet 2020). The purpose of this piece is to investigate the link between using photo editing apps like Instagram and Snapchat and body dysmorphic disorder, illuminating the potential repercussions and advocating for a more nuanced understanding of how one should display oneself online.
The Appeal of Filters and Digital Alteration
Enhancing Appearance: Users can digitally alter their appearance with the help of filters, which can result in smoother skin, larger features, and altered body proportions.
Creative Expression: With the help of filters, users are able to experiment with their photography and create striking visual works
Body Image and Dysmorphia
Body Image Concerns: Dissatisfaction with one's physique is exacerbated by the use of filters, which can lead to the promotion of unrealistic beauty standards and the promotion of comparison to others' filtered images.
Dysmorphic Tendencies: People who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a mental illness marked by an unhealthy fixation on one's appearance, may be especially susceptible to the deleterious effects of filters. Their already warped sense of identity could be further skewed by exposure to digitally edited photographs.
(Kamleshun & Mejias 2018)
Tumblr media
Reinforcement of Unrealistic Beauty Standards
Perfectionism and Comparison: The use of filters on photos has been linked to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction among users by increasing their quest for perfection and their propensity to compare themselves to digitally modified photographs.
Reinforcement of Narrow Ideals: Oftentimes, filters reinforce cultural ideals that may not be representative of a varied range of appearances by emphasising a narrow concept of beauty that emphasises smooth skin, thin features, and symmetrical proportions.
( Raj et al. 2022)
Social Media Culture and Influences
Validation and Attention: Filters are used by users of social media to increase their number of likes, comments, and follows in order to feel more accepted by their peers.
Idealised Online Persona: As a result of using filters, one's digital persona may diverge from reality, which may have negative consequences for feelings of self-worth.
(Abbas & Dodeen 2022)
Tumblr media
Promoting Digital Well-being
Awareness and Critical Evaluation: Insisting that users think about how filters might affect their sense of identity and analyse the messages they send.
Authenticity and Self-acceptance: Promoting the values of self-love, self-acceptance, and a wide range of attractiveness standards.
Digital Detox and Balance: Promoting a healthy connection with technology involves suggesting regular breaks from social media and ensuring that time spent online is balanced with offline activities.

Week 8 - Digital Citizenship and Software Literacy: Instagram Filters
When I think of Instagram Filters I think of a shortcut to influence a large community. So in recent years, many women would use these filters, altering their appearance by making themselves look better or changing their facial structure. This caused a massive negative effect on women and is still used today, photoshop and makeup were the old shortcuts, however, it was a skill that anyone can achieve but also add their own style of twist to the makeup design. With filters, it just makes everyone's face the same, causing people to feel bad and wanting to modify their face or body in real life.
Meanwhile, the men have been influenced by other men in the fitness industry and what they use is Photoshop and damaging supplements that can cause significant injuries and effects. Dwayne Johnson is an example of this: being shredded with a low body fat percentage all year round while promoting his movies and other side hustles. He is creating a fake fairy tale for young men who will never achieve that physic without taking illegal supplements.
All these shortcuts create young individuals to feel depressed which will damage their routine of sleep and other important habits. Which may lead to silly acts that may never be reversible.

Instagram Filters
There’s no denying that social media filters and editing apps have made us all question whether we should use them or let ourselves embrace being natural and unedited. The increased usage of apps like Facetune has provided anybody with the opportunity to fix anything about themselves. This includes teeth whitening, face sculpting, and body slimming…. LITERALLY ANYTHING!
The biggest problem is, that those who are choosing to not use the editing apps like the majority of women feel pressured and judged for posting an unedited photo of themselves.
“According to a new Dove Self-Esteem Project, research has revealed that a shocking 85% of girls have applied filters or used an app to change the way they look in their photos by the time they are 13; whilst 67% of girls try to change, or hide, at least one body part before posting a photo of themselves to social media” (Mind-bending and Filtered Faces, 2021).
Tumblr media
Nowadays, media and industries aren’t the only ones who are misrepresenting female aesthetics, any person is able to alter themselves through Photoshop and apps which produce a false normativity (Coy, 2016).  Western society and media have manufactured women’s aesthetics for the likes of the male gaze despite the fact these aesthetics are deemed to be unachievable and unrealistic. However, instead of creating a society that accepts inclusiveness, an image of women’s bodies can be edited to meet the desired standards of feminity (Coy, 2016). Anyone who owns a smartphone has high accessibility to download these apps as they are free to use. Women feel pressured due to the unrealistic expectation that is portrayed for females of how a female body should look which has decreased women’s confidence and produced increased rates of body image issues.
Tumblr media
The uprise of Digitised Dysmorphia
In recent times, there has been an increase in body dysmorphia, especially amongst women, body dysmorphia is a mental illness involving obsessive focus on a perceived flaw in appearance (Mayo Clinic 2016). Both males and females who face body dysmorphia can face extreme anxiety about their appearance and can develop obsessive and compulsive habits and routines regarding their appearance (Coy, 2016).
There are substantial similarities between body dysmorphia and digitised dysmorphia.
Digitized dysmorphia is not considered a mental illness but is fuelled by the increasing power and standards from beauty-related industries and cultural norms regarding the female body. The increase in edited photos causes women to feel like that’s how their female bodies should and need to look. Therefore, individuals who fall victim to edited photos fall into a toxic cycle of producing a false reality of themselves and are subject to having obsessive habits and routines of editing like those suffering from body dysmorphia.
