Can someone please enlighten me, what’s Lilith h21 in terms of interpretation? Does anyone use it when looking at charts and is it obvious how it shows up differently from the other Liliths?

Aspect Associations 2
Aspect Associations Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sun sextile/trine Uranus
[The influencer aspect]
People with this aspect are more prone to gaining fame on social media. This is because the Sun rules over attention/spotlight and Uranus rules over technology while sextiles and trines are harmonious aspects that bring ease
Ex: Charli Damelio
Interpolated Black Moon Lilith trine Venus
[The female beauty/sex symbol aspect] - code: H21
These people effortlessly attract men because of their beauty/body. Black Moon Lilith can represent sexualization by men in women’s charts. Venus represents beauty and attraction. Trines can show things that come at ease
Ex: Marilyn Monroe
Venus square Saturn in Composite Charts
[The long term couple that didn’t ever make it aspect]
A lot of couples with this aspect typically don’t make it long term unless there’s something combatting the energy like a 7th house stellium for example. This is because Venus represents romantic relations, Saturn represents longevity, and squares show obstacles/challenges. It can make you stay together for a while and keep going back to one another, but because of the square you may not end up together forever
Ex: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler
Jupiter conjunct/sextile/trine Pluto in Composite Charts
[The power couple aspect]
Couples with this in their chart have an extremely strong and powerful connection. If at an orb of 2° or below the couple will feel immediately magnetized to each other upon first meeting. Letting go of each other when you have this aspect is challenging. This is because Jupiter rules over abundance while Pluto rules over power, intimacy, infatuation, and magnetism
Ex: Ariana Grande and Mac Miller, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone
Venus conjunct Neptune in Composite Charts
[The twin flame aspect]
There is a strong spiritual bond between people that have this aspect. They have extreme compassion for one another and are very sensitive to each other’s emotions. This is because Venus represents love and Neptune rules over spirituality, compassion, and kindness. The reason this is deemed as a twin flame aspect is because Neptune rules over mirroring as well
Ex: Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds

I'm reading New Teen Titans and I finally got to the part that Joey's in (three cheers everybody!) and I have thoughts/feelings on how they treat him as a disabled character.
What really sticks out for me is how little he gets to define himself or choose his own path.
Marv Wolfman had a strict policy of not letting him have any thought bubbles and only showed his thoughts through narration. All the other characters have thought bubbles, but he doesn't and I can only assume it's because he's mute.
His thoughts are always shown via narration which keeps a level of separation between us and the character. Like this:
Tumblr media
[Tales of the Teen Titans #45]
And Wolfman knows how important thought boxes are with other characters:
Tumblr media
[New Teen Titans (1984) #13]
He's not allowed to actually explore and resolve his personal conflicts and he rarely gets to disagree or have his own ideas. He's usually going along with what everyone else wants.
He's introduced going along with what his mother wants. She describes him, she introduces him. She's not acting as an interpreter either, she's talking over him. The narrative isn't self aware about how he's treated, it just is. She talks, she acts, she has her motivations explained. His muteness is her motivation for revenge. Joey is just an extension of her, not allowed to define himself or his motives.
He was then run out of the Titans because they thought he was a traitor. Does he get to confront them about it? No.
He ends up on a mission with his mother where she tries to get him to kill someone who tortured her and he refuses. Then he chooses to save an art collection rather than capture him. And yes it's nice to get these character moments, but where's the confrontation + resolution between him and his mother? It's up in the air.
During the trial of Deathstroke he's the only Titan who's not present because he's being questioned by Interpol. This should be an important moment for him but he's not there.
And when the Trigon fight's over, Jericho is in hospital while all the others (including Lilith and Terry, who's literally not even a hero) get to have the post Trigon "talk about our feelings" chat but he doesn't. They don't hold the chat in the hospital or wait for him to recover. He's just left behind.
We're shown his insecurity over his masculinity, how his parents tried to force him to be like them and made him feel ashamed for not being manly enough, but he doesn't get to reach a resolution. He doesn't get to have his "what my parents said and did was wrong" moment. It's in the air. Things kind of just happen to him.
He's also framed as fundamentally pure, rarely getting to be angry and never hateful like literally every other character gets to be.
Tumblr media
[Tales of the Teen Titans #44]
Ironically, this is a very condescending way of speaking about him, but we are meant to take her word as true. No one on earth has never had a condescending thought, to separate him from those very human feelings and to treat him like he's pure is to dehumanise him.
He's a pacifist who doesn't care for violence but was forced to train for it against his will. Literally, why are you a hero if you didn't even want to learn how to fight? What changed for you? How do you reconcile your distaste for violence with your violence? There's no answer. His opinion doesn't matter. His mother wants him to fight, so he does.
The conflict between Cyborg and his dad who wanted him to be a scientist while he wanted to be an athlete is shown. They do fight over it and there is a resolution.
The conflict between Raven, her cults strict pacifism, her preference for non violence and the violence she commits is shown. She is conflicted, always musing over it and we get to hear her thoughts about it from her.
Jericho, however, is put in these conflicts without genuine exploration. There's no catharsis, there's no resolution. It just is. He just is.
He doesn't get to be angry at his mum, dad or genuinely argue with his fellow titans. He doesn't get to mess up and be emotional. Every other character gets this. Not him.
Like yes, he does have his moments sometimes but there's a huge disparity between him and other characters.
This all plays into tropes about disabled people. The idea disabled people either have to be beacons of perfection who inspire everyone else to be better or are discarded as needlessly bitter and angry, with this either being an explanation for their evil if they're a villain (Komand'r), or a flaw they need to get over if they're a hero (Cyborg). The idea that disabled people cannot make their own choices or have autonomy over their own destinies. The idea that disabled people have less of an internal life and aren't as complex as abled people.
Let Joey be a three dimensional person with complex motivations who is angry and hateful sometimes. Who gets to actually confront people, add to the conversation and have his own thoughts.

Is it possible to have multiple black moon Lilith in your birth chart? Just curious because I have black moon Lilith in 7th and 8th house 🙂
Hi! I don't think so, as it can only be in one place at a time. Is it possible you're talking about two different liliths?
There are five main ones:
Asteroid Lilith 1181
Black Moon (Mean) Lilith h12
Osculating (True) Lilith h13
Dark Moon (Waldemath) Lilith h58
Interpolated Lilith (Lunar Apogee) h21
Asteroid lilith is the only lilith placement with a physical body, the others are only theoretical points with differences in calculations.
Tumblr media
Black moon and Asteroid Lilith are probably the two most common ones and since they're all technically 'lilith' they often get confused! To figure out which ones are showing on your chart, look at the catalogue number it's under (1181, h12, h13, h58, h21).
In terms of which one is more important/accurate, I am not sure... Many people have different opinions and there's a lot of general disagreement and lack of consensus. I'd suggest looking at each one and seeing which one sounds more accurate to you personally.

Hi thankyou so much for answer my question back then! I have a couple questions too if you don't mind... its about the picture Alina Seo and a girl resemble with Elster. I assume Alina Seo is someone important to Elster (aka original Gestalt Itou Lilith who died on war..?)
Tumblr media
There are pics of Lilith seemingly in a ditch with dead bodies. Is that why Elster are not allowed to not mention the war, music, and art etc?
I always think that Lilith used have a romantic relationship with Alina Seo maybe that why Elster have a strong feeling and be warned to not communicate with people or Replika?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you think Elster used a soldier, possibly with a PTSD as her neural blueprint? I love the idea that our Elster being the one used
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I'm confused why Isa's sister (Erika) face always blured or her photo is fade/broken? I used think Elster might be Erika but I was wrong like that's impossible 😅
OH MAN............. i actually never made the connection between lilith itou and elster myself!! it makes perfect sense though that lilith is the original for the LSTR series - the persona stabilisation stuff for LSTRs indicates that they're based on a soldier, and it explains the blurring of the lines between alina and ariane that occurs on the sierpinski. the way lilith/alina and elster/ariane form two interwoven pairs, with elster's scrambled memory and the erosion of reality tangling the two couples together, until even alina's body is interpolated into ariane's...
the LSTR model being based on lilith, riddled with post-war ptsd, explains SO much about why elster is Like That, and why the persona stabilisation advice for the LSTRs is so draconian. even the most specific trigger listed - photographs - is tied directly to an artefact of lilith and alina's time together. there's also something just deeply, achingly sad about a living woman's trauma and feelings for another being encoded over and over like this. all her love and suffering, sealed into the subconscious of the LSTR model like a fly in amber, riddling each iteration in turn with pain and devotion that she will never understand..... and then lilith's neural blueprint is lost, and they start replicating and encoding the grief of one of those iterations instead. an echo of an echo of a tragedy, making itself anew. god. God
thank you for bringing this to my attention, i feel like i have a much fuller understanding of alina and elster's characters and the game as a whole now now. i actually didn't get the implications being raised by lilith's presence in the photo of alina at all, i thought the reveal that it was someone we haven't heard of before was like, some sort of deliberate un-twist lol

Killer duo camlil camila being the master mind and Lilith being her attack dog ❤️
love this concept actually <3
"Here's a thought," Lilith's voice moves behind her from one ear to the other, fingers dancing across the plane of Camila's shoulders, "I solve your problem my way."
Camila leans back into Lilith's arms. "Your way?"
"The things I can do with a knife darling," Lilith purrs into her ear, "he'd be singing like a songbird come morning."
A slow smile. "While I'm sure our friends at Interpol would just love to see more of your knifework, you're on a short leash until the heat dies down."
Lilith mouths at the back of her neck, with just the barest hint of teeth. "Just a little bit? I'll disguise it, make it real sloppy."
"I said no." Camila reaches her arm back to thread into Lilith's hair. She pulls sharply at the base, bringing Lilith impossibly closer. "Stick to the plan."
Lilith sighs, relaxing slightly against Camila's hand. "Follow the plan. Don't get picked up by Interpol. Don't cut off the hand of the man who tried to grab your ass in the bar last week. Don't solve your problem with expeditious haste. You don't let me do anything fun anymore."
Hm. Lilith does have a point. As much as Camila can settle her day to day, she is still a weapon, she needs to be pointed, to be used for some greater purpose. An addict, in need of a murderous fix. "I'll find you someone. Any requests?"
Lilith strains against Camila's firm grip in her hair, mouthing inarticulately at Camila's neck again, this time with more than a hint of teeth. Her hands run down Camila's arms, encircling her wrists. "Someone who won't be missed."
"Devious."
Lilith finally, finally, fully bites into her neck. "Only for you, darling." Her fingers leave faint scratch marks as they draw up Camila's arm. "Only for you."

How Mother Superion chose Beatrice to train Ava…
Duretti: I hope you’ve chosen someone to finally train our warrior nun properly
Mother Superion: Yes, I have chosen Sister Beatrice to do the job
Duretti: good she’s the best trained out of all of the rest
Mother Superion: you think that’s why I chose her? No you have it all wrong. If I made Lilith train Ava, she’d kill her within the first hour. If I chose Camila, she and Ava would create an international incident after 10 minutes. Not to mention that they would end up on the FBI’s and Interpol’s top 10 most wanted list. All that and I could spot the heart eyes that Sister Beatrice was giving Ava. Call this if you may, a romantic getaway to get them to confess their feelings for each other
Duretti: …

Mini Fanfic #1138: Queen of the Night~ (Super Smash Bros Ultimate)
9:45 p.m. at Aensland's Mansion's Living Room............
Lilith: (Eyes Begins to Sparkle at the Floating Ghost Dog in Front of Her) Oh my GOSSSSSSH!~ Who is this cute little guy?~
Ghost Dog: (Happily Barks) ('Worf Worf')
Luigi: That's Polterpup. I found him in the Gloomy Manor near the valley a while back and he's been by my side ever since.
Daisy: (Happily Scratches Under Polterpup's Chin) Don't forget he's the third goodess boy in the world~ Yes, you are~
Polterpup: (Happily Wags His Tail From the Affection He's Receiving)
Luigi: (Turns to Daisy) Who's the second and first?
Daisy: Second's Yoshi and the first will always be, you baby!~ (Uses her Other Finger to Scratch Up Under Luigi's Chin) Goodess Boy of all that's you~ (Starts Kissing on Luigi's Cheek)
Luigi: (Giggles Ticklishly by his Girlfriend's Various Affections) Daisyyy!~
Lilith: (Giggles Softly) Well, it's good see where you get your cuteness from, huh boy?
Polterpup: (Happily Nodded in Agreement) ('Worf')
Lilith: (Picks Polterpup Up and Shows him to Chun-Li) Wanna pet him too, old lady?
Chun-Li: Not old! (Starts Getting Nervous Around the Ghost Dog) And I dunno......You sure he won't bite? (Eyes Starts to Widened a Bit) Or try to possess my body and soul along with it?
Samus: Honey, I don't think he has any teeth on his mouth to begin with.
Luigi: Plus, he's more of a soul saver if anything. I can't tell you how many times he managed to save mines in the past.
Lilith: Your soul used to get taken before?
Luigi: On a few occasions. (Eyes Widened in Fear) Some of which were more traumatizing than the last......
Daisy: (Pulls Luigi into a Hug) Which is all more reason why you gotta be more cautious with your surroundings more, sweetie. You can't keep scaring us like this.
Luigi: Yes, ma'am.......
Samus: Well, would you look at that.
The gang turns to see Polterpup rubbing the side of his cheek onto Chun-Li's arm while wagging his tail happily.
Samus: The boy's taking a liking to you already, Chuns.
Lilith: He's such a loving boy~
Chun-Li: (Smiles a Bit at Ghost Pup) He does look adorable, in a.....ghostly kind of way.
Daisy: Right? He's a lover, not a biter~
Chun-Li: (Takes a Deep Breath) Okay. Um....Polterpup, my name is Chun-Li and.....(Slowly Moves her Hand Towards the Hop of Polterpup's Head) I hope we can along for the foreseeable-
'Boo'
Chun-Li: (Quickly Got on Samus' Lap and Hugging to Dear Life While Screaming) AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Don'tlethimgetme Don'tlethimgetme Don'tlethimgetmeeeeeee!~
Polterpup tilt his head to the side in confusion.
A feminine laugh is heard as the rest of the gang turns to see a long, teal haired woman wearing a dark purple dress, laughing up a storm behind the sofa.
?????: The look....on your face.....is so....pricelesheheheheheee!~
Lilith: Sis, is that you?
?????: (Getting Herself Up From the Floor) In the flesh of the eternal slumber!~ It's so nice to see you again, my dear little sister. (Boops on Lilith's Nose)
Chun-Li: (Glares at the Woman with Teal Hair While Gritting her Teeth) Morrigan........
Morrigan: (Smiles Brightly at the Now Angered Chun-Li) Chun-Li!~ My dearest interpol agent!~ How are you on this fine evening?
Chun-Li: I was doing JUST fine till you in came and scared me!
Morrigan: Aww~ But how else was I supposed to greet you?
Chun-Li: By saying 'Hi', like a normal person!!
Morrigan: You mean as old and bore as you, dear?
Chun-Li: (Angrily Gets Up) I'll show you who's "old" when I KICK YOU!!!
Samus: (Gently Lowers Chun-Li Back Down on her Lap Before Massaging Her Shoulders) Easy there, girl. She ain't worth kicking.
Polterpup circles around Chun-Li's lap for a brief second before sitting himself down on it and rest. Fortunately, his cuteness was more han enough for the Strongest Woman in the World to finally calm herself down and pet him softly.
Samus: So you're the big sister Lili mentioned. The name is Samus Aran, world famous Bounty Hunter, girlfriend of this cutie right here. (Gives Chun-Li a Kiss on the Cheek While Hugging Her)
Chun-Li: (Starts Pouting and Blushing) Not cute, Sammy......
Samus: Yeah, you are.
Luigi: (Smiles Softly at Morrigan) My name is Luigi Mario. Weird choice for a last name, but.....it's what we grew up with after all.
Daisy: (Forms a Welcoming Grin on her Face) Princess Daisy, at your service~ (Points Morrigan Towards a Sleeping Polterpup) And that there is our ghost puppy, Polterpup.
Morrigan: (Politely Bows at her Guests) Pleased to meet you all~ I am Morrigan Aensland, Queen of All Night ls and so on. (Happily Clasps her Hands Together) My baby sister tells me so much about each and everyone of you as of late. (Puts on a Somewhat Seductive Smirk on her Face Towards Luigi and Daisy in Particular) I especially heard of the time that you two were so brave and bold enough to satisfied her in more ways than one, in the past~
Luigi/Daisy: (Eyes Widened While Blushing and Sweating Bullets) Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Lilith: (Rolls her Eyes in Annoyance) Not a little kid anymore, sis..... (Starts Pouting at Morrigan) And quit googly eyeing at my plumper and princess, they're taken!
Morrigan: Oh will you relax, Li? I have no interest in stealing your lovers away. Your cookies were more than enough to satisfy me for the rest of night.
Lilith: (Comically Glares at her Older Sister) You greedy pig! I spent all day making those!
Morrigan: (Smiles Brightly) And they tasted wonderful, dear!~ A perfect 10/10 batch~
Lilith: ('Groans in Annoyance') And you still say that I'M a nuisance!?
Morrigan: Yes. Egregiously so. Need I remind of the time you lost Sir Walruskins?
Lilith: Oh my God, that was centuries ago, mistakes were made. Get it over it already!
Morrigan: (Crosses her Arms While Turning Away From Lilith) I'll get over it once you find him.
Lilith: Again, this all happened CENTURIES AGO! What makes you think I remember where your dumb walrus plushie is!?
Morrigan: (Glares at Lilith) His NAME is Sir Walriskins. (Turns Away From Lilith Again) And if you want my sincere forgiveness, I suggest you jog up that memory of yours pronto.
Lilith: (Groans Once More Before Turning Back to Her Friends) You see what I have to deal with all day? (Crosses her Arms While Pouting) So annoying!
Morrigan: Oh hush up. You know you adore me.
Lilith: Adore is a strong word. I say I tolerate you if anything.
Morrigan: Adore, tolerate, same thing. Unfortunately, as much as I would love to stay here and chat, I promised Felicia I would help with her fashion show tonight, so I must be off. But before I do that, Lilith, come here.
Lilith: You're not gonna prank me again, are you?
Morrigan: (Places her Hands on her Hips While Pouting Again) Does I look like a immature child to you? Get over here already!
Lilith: Fine, fine, I'm coming!
Lilith starts grumbling under her breath as she walks up to her older sister, only to suddenly get pulled into a loving hug, much to her surprise.
Lilith: Sis?
Morrigan: I'm proud of you, Li.
Lilith: (Raises an Eyebrow in Confusion) You are? I think I remember doing anything that spectacular as of late other watching over this ancient old mansion.
Morrigan: You have done a nice job watching over this place, I admit. But no, I'm talking about how much you've grown into your own as of late, How you're able to come out of your shell and see the outside world flr yourself. May sound cliche to say this....(Smiles Softly) But it makes me happy to have you as my little sister.
Lilith: (Heart Begins to Melt in Genuine Happiness) Morri~ (Hugs Morrigan Back) Thank you!~
Morrigan: (Immediately Pulls Away From Lilith) Nuh-uh-uh! What did I say about calling me that?
Lilith: Oh come on. It's not that bad of a nickname, Morri!
Morrigan: Quit it! (Crosses her Arms Again) It does not associate well towards my role of the Queen of Night and I refuse to think otherwise.
Lilith: (Groans Yet Again Before Throwing her Habds Up and Returning to Her Seat) ('Uggggh') You are such a drama queen!
Morrigan: (Simply Nodded) And proud of it. (Bows to Everyone Else in the Room) I would like to thank you all for being friends with baby sister as of late. I know she can be a handful at times.
Luigi: (Smiles Softly) It's really no problem at all, Morrigan.
Daisy: (Smiles Brightly) Yeah, your sister is great to have around.
Samus: (Smiles Softly) And we wouldn't have it any other way.
Lilith: (Heart Starts Melting Again in Pure Happiness) Oh my gosh, you guys, I'm gonna cry~ (Pulls Luigi and Daisy into a Group Hug) Thank youuu!~
Morrigan: Oh and Chun-Li?
Chun-Li: Yeah?
Morrigan: Despite our differences over the years.....(Smiles Softly) It's nice to see you again after all this time.
Chun-Li: (Genuinely Surprised by the Gesture) Oh.....It's.....Good to see you too, Morrigan. (Smiles Back) I like the dress you're wearing. It goes along with your hair perfectly.
Morrigan: Why, thank you!~ It nearly costed me a fortune to get this. The outfit you're wearing looks good on you too, for an old lady!~ (Sticks her Tongue Out in Glee)
Chun-Li: (Take the Compliment, Chun.) (Tales a Deep Breath Before Speaking, Trying her Hardest Not to Blow a Casket Again) Thanks.
Morrigan: You're very welcome. Sad to say, but i must bid you all adieu. (Summons a Trails of Mini Bat's Behind her Before Sitting Down on Top pf their Heads) Don't do anything I would in a blissful night like this. (Waves Goodbye as the Bats Flies her Off to the Window) Tootles~
Samus: (Watches Morrigan Leaves the Mansion) So that's your big sister, huh?
Luigi: (Smiles Softly) She seems nice.
Lilith: (Rolls her Eyes Again) Yeah, when she wants to be. She may be my big sister, but she can be a real brat sometimes.
Chun-Li: Ain't that the truth. (Starts Pouting Once More) I really wanted to kick her too.....
Samus: You'll get your chance one day, babe. Probably.

Dev Patel and the Green Knight
I finally got around to seeing The Green Knight. Overall, I enjoyed it--David Lowery does a good job capturing the essential weirdness of the tale, which is very much about taking a mundane circumstance (a Christmas feast) and suddenly catapulting the reader into a mythic otherworld through the intrusion of the alien and monstrous, and the fantastical costumes, dramatic lighting, and dissonant score all contribute very well to a sense of otherness that permeates the original story.
But I find it interesting--and, I'll admit, a little frustrating--that no modern film adaptation of medieval literature is really capable of taking the story it's adapting on its own merits. This isn't an objection to modifying the source text, or taking it in new, non-literal direction. I can think of plenty of adaptations of work that play with the source material in interesting ways, and are better for it. Even very faithful adaptations like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings are inevitably going to alter the source based on the need to adapt it for the screen and the whims of the director. But when it comes to medieval classics, texts like Beowulf or Gawain and the Green Knight are always held at arm's length. An ironic layer is always interpolated into the original story, and even in modified form the story is never allowed to stand on its own.
Contrast, for instance, modern retellings of Arthurian legend; or Wagner's Nibelungenleid; or something like Neil Gaiman's book of Norse mythology. These are all adaptations of much older stories, all medieval; and the authors typically happy to let the stories operate on their own terms. In fact, that is often a selling point: dipping into these tales is a way of sampling an alien culture, one that is remote from us in time rather than space, and part of the sense of heightened drama is the understanding that these stories do not necessarily depict the world in the same way that modern realist prose does. They are fairy-stories, in the Tolkienian sense, and something not quite even like "high fantasy," which, although it is a genre which owes much to the mythic tradition, is usually *told* in the same manner as other realist fiction. And you could take these stories and re-cast them in a realist mold--that's definitely been done with Arthurian legend, either via anachronism or trying to place them in an era-appropriate historical context, and even that yields something quite like the original in tenor, even if the language used to relate the story is often very different.
Watching this movie, I was *strongly* reminded of Robert Zemeckis's Beowulf, in that this did not feel like an attempt to adapt Gawain and the Green Knight for the screen. It felt like an attempt to tell a story *about* Gawain and the Green Knight (the text), a story which does not stand on its own. You don't have to have read the text to understand the movie (although I think some directorial decisions would be a bit mystifying if you hadn't), but the movie definitely situates itself *as a response* to the text. Which is an odd choice! Actually, another good point of comparison is Spike Jonze's Adaptation. It started life as an adaptation of Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief, but Charlie Kaufman sort of gave up writing that halfway through and wrote a movie about the difficulty he was having writing *that* movie, and the result is something very weird (and very good) that is full of metafictional elements that depend on the existence of this other work, in a way that a straight retelling of The Orchid Thief for the screen obviously would not. And while The Green Knight isn't that extreme, it is definitely playing on the structure of the medieval poem, and replying to it.
The core of the movie (as I understood it) is a tension between young Gawain's aspiration to knightliness, his ambition which is born at least in part from his mother's encouragement, and his own failure to live up to the heroic ideal of greatness. Not chivalric--this is a movie in which the ethos of chivalry makes not even the briefest of appearance, which is weird given that it's nominally an Arthurian romance, and that the chivalric ethos is extremely important to the original text. Instead we have a generic greatness being described, one which is associated with renown, with taking part in mythic events, and with achieving high rank and honor. In the service of seeing her son obtain all this, Gawain's mother seems to cast some kind of spell, whereupon the titular Green Knight appears at Arthur's Christmas-feast; and as in the poem, a game of beheadings is proffered. Gawain accepts the challenge, beheads the knight, and the knight rides away, promising he'll meet Gawain a year and a day hence at the Green Chapel. So far so straightforward. When Gawain sets off a year later to meet the knight, his mother gives him an enchanted belt to keep him safe from harm. Gawain goes on to have a couple of side-of-the-road adventures and mishaps, the kind of thing that's par for the course when you're telling an Arthurian romance, until he arrives at the house of a mysterious benefactor, just about a day away from the Chapel, who grants him hospitality until the day of his challenge.
Now, in the original story, this is where Gawain gets the magic belt, and it's hugely important: Gawain and his host promise to exchange anything they might receive at the end of each day, when the host has been out hunting all day and Gawain has been in the house recuperating from his travels. During this time, the host's wife repeatedly tries to seduce Gawain; and Gawain is trapped between the imperative not to sleep with his host's wife (a major violation of the rules of good chivalric conduct!) and the imperative not to offend the woman (also a violation of those rules). He succeeds, for the most part; he is forced at one point to give his host a kiss at the end of the day, since the wife kissed him; this is shown as him holding nothing back and acting in good faith on the vow he made to his host. When Gawain finally rebuffs the wife for good, she insists that, even if he won't sleep with her, he should at least take a magic belt she has woven that will keep him from harm. He does; but he does *not* give this to his host. When he finally goes to the Green Chapel, the Knight returns the original blow as promised--but only nicks Gawain lightly. He reveals himself to be none other than the host who was sheltering him; the nick was his reprimand for withholding that final gift, but because of his good conduct he is otherwise left unharmed. The whole thing was a test of sorts, one which Gawain passed. Despite flinching at first from the blow, and keeping the belt secret, he shows himself ultimately to be a man of good (albeit not perfect) conduct, and *that* is why he wins honor from the whole affair.
The movie takes this basic narrative and alters it in key places, completely changing the valence of the whole thing. First, Gawain gets the belt at the beginning of his quest, as mentioned; he loses it on the way, but when he reaches the castle, the wife of his host (who succeeds in seducing him with a handjob) presents it to him as if she had woven it herself. He does not actually engage in the game of exchanged with his host, who is *also* not the Green Knight. And we're treated to a monologue about the color green from the wife that feels beat for beat like it's been ripped off from someone's undergraduate essay about Gawain and the Green Knight, which is a little weird even in the context of the rest of the movie. Finally when Gawain reaches the chapel, the knight goes to return the blow--and Gawain completely chickens out and flees. We are then treated to an extended sequence of Gawain returning home; being feted as a hero; earning his knighthood (presumably by lying about what happened); succeeding Arthur as king; him abandoning his low-class beau once she bears him a son, and marrying a princess; going to war; his son dying in a war; and finally, as an old man, being trapped in his throne room as a besieging army breaks its way inside. Just before they do, he removes the magic belt from around his waist, his head fall off, and bam--we're shown this has been an Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge thing this whole time, and the Green Knight has not yet landed his blow.
Gawain finally takes off the belt, throws it aside, and tells the knight to go ahead--and the knight bends down and congratulates him. In context, the reading seems to be this: the belt is a talisman of Gawain's mother's influence, of external expectations for what kind of man he is. The Knight is Arthur or perhaps an agent of his, and the test in *this* case is whether Gawain can be his own person. All the events leading up to this point are perhaps a part of the original magic Gawain's mother cast, an effort to Lilith Weatherwax her kid to greatness by putting him into an epic story. Implicitly, then, the Gawain and the Green Knight we all know is the false version of the tale, the tale as Gawain's mother would have it told.
This is all very clever. But I'm afraid it's so clever it falls apart in the end. Because the structure of the original story that this depends on is dependent in turn on taking the whole notion of chivalric virtue seriously, which this movie plainly does not. Gawain is shown as irreverent and lustful and a bit of a party animal--lovable and good hearted fundamentally, but definitely not an Arthurian hero. That's fine, but that's a very modern sort of character, one that feels out of place in a movie that is trying very hard also to be tonally unmodern, firmly embedded in a mythic otherwhen of Arthurian legend. Moments of slice-of-life mundaneness, while charming, strain mightily against the epic tone the movie tries to take in other places, and strange events like a ghost seeking her lost head or immense giants striding the landscape. We are jostled: are we in the land of myth? Or are we in historical Britain? We cannot be in both!
And this is a movie that was definitely made by people who had read the original text; not just the original text, but also a great deal of criticism *about* the original text. The movie namechecks the theme of fivefold symmetry that's incredibly important to the structure of the poem; there's the aforementioned undergrad essay about colors about 3/4th of the way through; and there's the fact that the structure of the original plot (down to Morgan LeFay in disguise as an old woman in the host's castle) is present in altered form in every detail. But none of these details add up to much. There's a weird homoerotic kiss with the host that implies that in fact *he* wanted to sleep with Gawain, in addition to his wife; the ghost Gawain encounters early on tells him the Green Knight is in fact someone he knows (and therefore *can't* be the host; I think it's implied to be Arthur, like I said, but this is never quite confirmed), and while all these things *about* the original poem are shown, none of them ever get integrated thematically into the plot.
I think as a result, whatever Lowery was going for, the whole movie kind of falls apart in the end. And that's a pity, because somewhere in there is just a really weird, visually striking, really gripping, embellished-and-polished-for-modern-sensibilities-but-also-thematically-true-to-the-source retelling of Gawain and the Green Knight. And that would have been a much better movie! What are we to make of this, a movie that purports to be telling a story-behind-the-story, but one that leaves no room or context for the original? After all, Gawain in the end does *not* flee, does not return home a coward and a liar; presumably, he earns his honor, and can be honest about what happened. But if he is honest, none of the rest of what we have been shown makes a lick of sense, or has any point.
One feels a bit as if modern directors, when confronted with medieval texts being a bit weird, a bit alien in their worldview, instead of realizing that's actually something people like some of from time to time, feel like they have to construct an artificial bridge between the Middle Ages and the present day. But because it is invariably metafictional and self-referential, as if to say "don't worry, we know nobody REALLY wants to watch a bunch of boring medieval shit played straight," it comes off as cringing and ashamed of its source material. This isn't a plea for historicity! Gawain and the Green Knight is not history. But one does occasionally want to see an adaptation of one's favorite works without directors being ashamed of the text they are adapting! And since most people will not have read the original, I am rather confused about what the director intends for the audience to get out of all these references that are dependent on it, but don't stand on their own merits within the narrative of the movie itself.
The acting was good, the set design and costumes were terrific, I loved the slow and measured pacing and the weird score, and the design of the Knight himself, and the landscapes and almost everything else about the movie. So I don't think it's a waste of time, especially if you have read and enjoyed Gawain and the Green Knight, in the original or in translation. But it's definitely a pity to see a movie that was, well, *almost* great, but ended up merely OK.

I'm so deeply intrigued by the family dynamics of the slasher au. At any point does Suzanne have the "be careful with my daughter or they'll never stop finding you" talk with Camila? Does Michael remember Lilith from his childhood, and if he does, how does he react to his big sister being an internationally wanted killer? Does Lilith have a relationship with Jillian, or did she cling to Suzanne? Please feel free to ignore this if it's too spoilery (or you don't want to answer). I just adore this au and want to know all of the things.
Parts of this are theoretically "spoilery" but who knows when the fuck slasher au will actually come out so like. who cares lmaoo
michael does sort of vaguely remember lilith from his childhood, he's abt 8-10-ish years younger than lilith so she's around for part of his late childhood but she disappears when he's like 14 (a few years before his mothers "die" in the car crash) then it's like a big time skip for like a decade and change until he's an interpol agent and actual slasher au happens
he's. well. I don't think he's shocked when he discovers she's a killer and the one he's looking for, but he doesn't tell anyone that he knows her, so bea and ava are out of the loop on that one!! ooh drama!!
lilith does have a relationship with jillian! it's not as close as she is with suzanne. jillian is like. she's trying not to overwhelm lilith when she initially escapes from adriel.
I think it's smthn like one night while lilith is up stalking the house late cause she can't sleep she comes across jillian making coffee at like 3 am and she's like "shouldn't you be... not doing that at 3 am. suzanne told me I shouldn't."
and jillian is trying to be a cool mom to this very traumatized teenager who lives in her house like a shadow. "I won't tell her if you won't"
lilith shifts uncomfortably. "I don't like to lie to suzanne." she doesn't like to lie in general, really, if she can avoid it. she's very good at choosing her words very carefully.
"then you don't have to." jillian gestures with her mug "I'll take the blame on this one, she knows about it. do you want some?"
and anyway I think jillian and lilith bond over weird medical history and being awake at like 3 am. nd sometimes suzanne wakes up at like 6 am for her morning yoga on the balcony and lilith joins her and lilith obviously hasn't slept, but she has a small smile on her face and excitedly explains how people used to drill holes in their heads so that's something like progress.
