“Y’all I’m freaking out.” Y/n notified her friends as they stepped off of the bus at the beach.

“If it makes you feel better,” Kenma starts, pulling his psvita from his backpack, “He has no clue who you are.”

Y/n gives Kenma a blank stare. “Yeah, thanks K.”

“You have nothing to worry about.” Kuroo told her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. “If anything goes wrong, we’ll beat him up for you.”

“I appreciate it, but three out of five of you would get stomped.”

“And who do you think wouldn’t get stomped?”

Y/n shrugs. “Probably you and Kotaro.”

“What about me?” Mikey asks, wanting to be included.

“No, remember Molly beat you up last year?” Y/n responds, referring to their two-year-old cousin who was barely a year old when the incident happened.

John Michael hid his face in his hands and continued walking.

When the they stepped into the entrance to the beach, they were enthralled by the decorations and the warm fire. A few teams were already there—that being Seijoh and Inarzaki—but Y/n decided not to stress herself because Karasuno wasn’t there yet.

The four of them went to find a spot to set up while the rest of Nekoma’s volleyball club went their own way. It was about five minutes before Shiratorizawa and Fukurodani showed up.

“Hey, Y/n!” Bokuto yelled, pulling her up from where she sat on her towel. “Come play volleyball with us!”

“You know I suck at volleyball, Ko.” She reminds him, “Everyone will laugh at me.”

“I think everyone else is a little preoccupied.” He pointed over to the left where a group of boys were crowded around what Y/n could only assume was a girl, and no one stood at the volleyball net.

“Oh, okay then.”

Their group went to the volleyball court and tried to teach Y/n and John Michael how to play.

“I expect that all of you will represent Karasuno in a positive manner.” The vice principal lectured everyone from Karasuno who all murmured in response, only half listening.

The volleyball club was excited for this trip, but no one could match Hinata’s excitement.

He’d been restless for days, waiting for this day to approach, and now he’s being held back by a lecture from a guy he doesn’t even like.

“We’ll be on our best behavior, sir. Please let us go play in the beach and we’ll represent Karasuno better than any other schools can represent themselves!” Hinata enthused.

The vice principal side eyed Hinata and then nodded, and everyone finally entered the beach.

Hinata, Nishinoya, Kageyama, and Tanaka immediately ran to the water, stripping off their shirts in the process while the more chill members of the team found things to do on land.

“Where do you guys think the girl who likes Tsukki is?” Tadashi asked, grabbing a deflated floaty from his bag.

“Who cares?” Tsukishima responds, taking a seat near the fire and grabbing a marshmallow. “I certainly don’t.”

“I heard she’s cool, Tsukishima. Maybe you could learn a thing or two from her.” Suga says, trying to discreetly take a seat next to Kiyoko.

“Be nice, Suga.” Daichi replies, squeezing in between Suga and Kiyoko. “But no, seriously, Tsukki. I think you should give her a chance.”

“I’d rather not.”

“Do you guys think that’s her?” Tadashi asks, pointing towards to the volleyball net.

Tsukishima doesn’t look up.

“She’s very pretty.” Daichi compliments.

“Someone that pretty shouldn’t like Tsukishima.” Suga says shamelessly.

“Cut it out!” Tadashi yells, wanting to do nothing more than defend his best friend.

“Sorry, Tadashi.”

“We should go spy on them.” Tadashi suggests.

“Yeah!” Asahi replies, surprisingly eager.

Tadashi and Asahi get up and walk towards the water where the four idiots are playing shark.

“Hey! We’re going to meet Tsukki’s girlfriend! Do you guys want to come?” Tadashi yells, glancing to the left as Suga catches up with them.

The four of them exit the water almost instantly. “Yeah!”

The seven of them walk over to where Kuroo is standing behind you, trying to show you how to serve.

“Hey! I’m Hinata!” Hinata yells suddenly, catching you off guard and making you flinch a little. “Are you Y/n? Kuroo told me about you. Tsukishima may be a big sucky jerk-face, but if you push him enough he’ll like you. That’s how he likes us. Do you like volleyball? I love volleyball. Can we be friends?”

“Calm down, dumbass! You’re gonna scare her away with your stupidity!” Kageyama yells, making you flinch again.

You blink at the two of them who continue to bicker back and forth.

“Should I say something?” You ask.

“They’ll stop on their own. They do this all the time. I’m Yamaguchi Tadashi. I’m Tsukishima’s best friend!”

“Nice to meet you! I didn’t know he had a best friend, Kuroo didn’t mention you.”

Tadashi loooks over to Kuroo who shrugs.

“Anyways, he can be a little mean but sometimes he means well.”

“Just sometimes?”

“Yeah, he’s a little hard to deal with.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“For what?” Kenma asks, sniffling to keep the snot from exiting his nose. “You’re not going to talk to him. You’re too much of a pussy.”

“Kozume Kenma, I will fuck you up.” You threaten.

Kenma shrugs. “Do your worst, I guess.”

You roll your eyes and continue talking to Tadashi about Tsukishima before you all somehow end up splitting in half and playing volleyball together.

With your few minutes of training, you thought that if you served the ball, the outcome would be decent at the least. But when the ball flew way over the net and people started to yell the name of your crush, you knew you fucked up. You ran and didn’t look back.

When Maura reenters the room, Tsukishima is sitting next to you with an elbow rested on the panel that you were earlier instructed not to touch.

You decide to keep quiet, hoping that he’ll get into trouble for it and will shortly be removed from the internship. Instead, Maura approaches him with what appears to be muscle memory as she doesn’t even look up from the key card until his elbow is moved and he’s reaching to take it from her frail hands.

“Thank you, Maura.” He bows his head.

“No problem, sweet pea.” She ruffled his hair.

She looks at the two of you silently for a second. You’re looking down miserably and Tsukishima seems to be mentally far away.

“Now I may be old, but I am not dumb.” Maura notices you both. “What’s wrong?”

You raise an eyebrow. “What do you mean, Maura?”

“Oh please. The tension in this room is so thick that even heavy metal couldn’t cut through it. What’s wrong? Are the two of you exes or something?”

You scoff and cross your arms. “We are not.”

He rolls his eyes. “She wishes she could pull me.”

You gasp in offense. “Jerk!”

“Bitch!”

“Excuse you!” Maura yells. You both turn to look at her. She rests one hand on her cane and the other on her hip. “I do not tolerate this kind of behavior.”

Your eyes widen. This is the moment you’ve been anticipating for all of three minutes.

“You two need to go out together and learn how to be civil.”

You nod, hearing an entirely different statement than the one she actually spoke. “So true, Maura! Never agreed with you more.” Your brain finally catches up with her words. “Wait, what?”

“You heard me, Ms. Y/L/N. As you two are both new and my only interns, I need you both to work together seamlessly to get the job done. What’s a better way to get to know each other besides going on a quick coffee run?”

You sigh. “Okay, Maura, but I’m only doing this for you.”

Tsukishima nods in agreement.

“I’m sending you to Mama Sweet Café. It’s two blocks from here. Here is ¥7,287.00. I doubt you’ll need that much, but this is just in case you decide to buy up the whole cafe. Please look out for cars.”

The bell to the cafe rings behind the two of you after a long silent walk.

“Welcome in!” The lady behind the counter chirps. “What can I get for you both today?”

“I’ll have a hot pumpkin spice latte with two pumps of white mocha syrup, two pumps of apple brown sugar syrup and some caramel syrup.” You tell her.

Tsukishima looks down at you and raises an eyebrow.

You keep your eyes forward. “Oh, and a cinnamon roll.”

“A hot pumpkin spice latte with two pumps of white mocha syrup, two pumps of apple brown sugar syrup and some caramel syrup and a cinnamon roll. Okay! And for your boyfriend?”

Tsukishima’s face heats up and you nearly choke on your saliva.

“Oh, he’s not-“

“I’m not-“

“My apologies for assuming! What would you like, friend?”

You roll your eyes. “Psh…”

“Black coffee and a glazed donut.” He responds to the lady.

“Boring just like you.” You mumble.

He looks down at you. “Do I need to pick you up and throw you in the trash?”

The barista watches in amusement, stopping and clearing her throat when the two of you look at her. “Um.. will that be all?”

“Oh we also need a white hot chocolate and a cheese danish to go.” You tell her. “That’s all.”

“Okay! Your total is ¥5353.90.”

You go to hand in your card, refusing to use Maura’s money but Tsukki plucks it from your hand and pockets it, giving the lady his card instead.

She rings him up before taking your names and handing you a number.

The two of you make your way over two a table and sit in silence. Tsukki gives you your card back, and It’s only a few minutes before a waitress brings your items to your table.

“You two are a beautiful couple!” She smiles. “Let us know when you’re ready for the hot chocolate and cheese danish to go. It’s in the back until then. Have a nice day!”

She walks away quickly and the two of you are left dumbfounded, staring at the spot she was just standing moments earlier.

When the shock wears off, two of you enjoy half of your food and drinks before standing up to retrieve Maura’s items. On the way out, Tsukki holds the door for you. You mumble a quick “thank you” and the two of you walk in silence yet again.

Maura greets you both when you make it back to the music store. “How was coffee?”

“It was fine.” You tell her.

“It was awkward.” Tsukki corrects you.

You gasp in offense. “It was not awkward!”

“Yes it was.” He debates. “We didn’t speak at all and people kept making the horrible mistake of thinking you’re my girlfriend.”

“Well it’s not like you would’ve responded if I spoke to you.” “All you do is grunt and complain. By the way, anyone would be very lucky to have me as their girlfriend!”

“Your opinion doesn’t count. It’s biased.”

Maura waves her arms around, stepping in between you both. “What is the issue with the two of you?”

“Nothing!” You shout in unison.

Maura sighs and places two fingers on the bridge of her nose. “Okay, I have a project for you two. Get to know each other enough to understand one another and be civil! I’m not saying you have to like each other, and you certainly don’t have to get married. But this can’t happen every day.”

“Yes ma’am.”

The rest of the shift is mildly uncomfortable with many stolen death glares behind Maura’s back. You were excited for this internship beforehand, but Tsukishima’s presence is really getting to you. When the clock shows 14:57, you do a quick look around to make sure Maura isn’t, then you

try to leave the store. Unfortunately for you, you couldn’t find Maura inside because she was waiting for you outside by your car.

“Ms. Y/L/N! I figured you’d try to do this.” She chuckles, looking over to where Tsukki is across from her. “I just wanted to remind you both about trying to be civil tomorrow. It was nice to meet you both, see you in the morning!”

And with that, Maura walks back into the store leaving you and Tsukishima in close proximity yet again.

“So um…” You speak nervously. “I think we should try to be civil. For Maura’s sake.”

“Yeah,” He nods, “For Maura.”

“Can I have your number?” You ask shyly. He raises an eyebrow.

“Oh come on!” You try to convince.“It’s for Maura’s project. Scouts honor.”

Tsukishima huffs. “For the sake of work and work only.”

“Sure!”

He reaches for your phone and gives you his. When the two of you hand the phones back, Tsukishima is almost surprised at how tame your name in his phone was.

“Okay then.” He says, looking at you weirdly. “I don’t need or want to be in your presence any longer so I’m gonna go.”

You nod. “Alright then.”

He begins to walk away until you call him back.

“Hey Tsukki?”

He stops walking and turns his head slightly, not looking at you but silently letting you know he’s listening.

“I’m sorry about the whole volleyball and marshmallow incident.” You speak hopefully.

Tsukki says nothing and walks away, leaving you standing alone in the parking lot.

Y/n and John Michael are brother and sister. Y/n attends Nekoma and John Michael attends Fukurōdani. Y/n is a first year, and John Michael is a second.

Kuroo and Y/n dated for 3 months. They broke up because their relationship didn’t really feel like a relationship… they remain close friends though!

John Michael has been friends with Bokuto since they were five. They met when he and his family visited Florida.

Bokuto had a crush on Y/n since the moment they met. After Kuroo and Y/n started dating, Bokuto pushed his feelings down so it wouldn’t seem like he was betraying his friend.

Kenma is a double agent. Since he’s friends with Hinata, the two of them also talk about people within their friend groups.

John Michael’s full name is Jalen John Michael Thompson, but he doesn’t like “Jalen” or “Thompson” so he chooses to go by John Michael.

Y/n is obsessed with the ocean and all things ocean related. They sometimes call her Moana.

Akaashi is 100% the mom friend of the group. He does everything in his power to prevent the group from doing anything chaotic but inevitably gets dragged into it 80% of the time.

The group has a diner that they meet up at once weekly.

FUN FACTS:

Kageyama and Tsukishima have both left the groupchat a number of times, but either Hinata or Daichi have brought them back in.

Ukai, Takeda, Yachi, Kiyoko Ennoshita, Kinoshita, and Kazuhito are all included but they don’t say much.

A few months back, the group chat was primarily used for Daichi to uplift his team. After Karasuno found out Nekoma also had a groupchat that they chatted in frequently, they decided to one-up them.

Hinata, Nishinoya, and Suga often use the groupchat to ask the team for opinions on their outfits for when they go out altogether.

They play Crazy 8s and the winner always gives the losers a dare.

At one point in time, the groupchat was called “Crappykawa”, but Ukai caught it and cussed them out. They changed it immediately.

Tsukishima was actually the one to put the rest of the team—minus Daichi and Ukai, they already knew—onto TLC (hence the name of the gc), but Tsukki refused to say he was crazy, sexy, or cool so Tanaka excluded him.

[chapter five: tickets to my downfall]

summary: in which things start to go wrong very quickly.

You stand from your car and smooth your hands over your outfit before shutting the door and walking up to the front door of the music store.

The moment you walk in, you’re immediately riveted by the many eras of music staring back at you.

Music boxes, record players, walkmans…

“Whoa! An iPod touch!”

And right when you reach out to touch it-

“Please, no touching the electronics unless you plan on buying.” A shaky voice speaks from behind you.

“Oops, sorry.” You apologize sincerely, quickly retracting your hand and turning to face the old woman. “Are you Maura Wilkerson?”

“I suppose I am.” The woman responds. “And you are?”

“Y/L/N Y/N!” You answer eagerly. “I’m here for an internship starting today!”

“Oh, Ms. Y/l/n.” Maura smiles softly. “You’re early by thirty minutes.”

You nod, shifting in your place nervously. “I was very excited.”

Maura chuckles. “I can tell.“

“When do we start?”

“We’ll start as soon as the other young lady arrives.”

“Someone else will be here?”

“Yes, dear. Will that be a problem?”

“Oh, no ma’am! I was just under the impression that I’d be the only one interning here.”

“You were but another venue had one too many candidates and needed to switch someone out.”

“Okay I understand.”

“For now,” Maura reaches her arm towards you. “Let me show you to the booth.”

You nod enthusiastically and join arms with her. The two of you proceed to the recording studio in the store's back section. Her words fall onto deaf ears as you seat yourself and take in the beauty of the place and the opportunity.

Maura looks at you knowingly. “Ms. Y/l/n?”

“Oh!” You shake your head rapidly, pulling yourself from your reverie. “I’m so sorry, Ms. Wilkerson. Can you please repeat that? I was a little distracted.”

“No worries, sweet pea.” Maura speaks, taking a seat next to you. “You seem to have quite a knack for music.”

You smile politely. “Yes, ma’am. I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember.”

“What’s your favorite genre?” She asks.

“I like R&B.” You answer honestly. “I read that this music shop has been in your family for generations. Are you here because you have to be? Or do you love music as well?”

Maura looks down. “That’s a very heavy question, dear.”

Your eyes widen. “Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to offend you, I just-“

“I’m not offended, I’m just not sure how to answer. I like music, but I think I’d like to be somewhere else for the rest of my days.” Maura gestures to herself. “I’m not getting any younger.”

“How long have you worked here?” You ask curiously.

“I took over from my father when I was nineteen. He had gotten sick and couldn’t run it anymore.” Maura smiles sadly, avoiding your brown eyes. “Now my granddaughter Lana and my husband Bert help me when they can.”

You frown. “I’m sorry you had to go through that.”

“Life isn’t always easy.” Maura stands up from her seat and grabs her cane. “Now, please don’t touch anything until I get back with Keiko.”

You smile as she leaves the room. “Yes ma’am.”

You struggle internally for nearly four minutes, willing yourself not to touch anything before deciding that no one would notice if you did.

You reach over to touch the buttons on the panel when Maura saunters back in.

She gasps. “Y/n!”

You flinch, jumping back and taking your seat.

You frown in embarrassment. “Sorry, Maura.”

She chuckles. “You are going to send me into an early grave, aren’t you?”

You scratch the back of your next sheepishly. “I will try my hardest to not cause that problem.”

Maura chuckles before handing you a small card with your information on it. You look up at her in confusion.

“That’s your key card. You’ll need it to enter the booth and to access the registers.”

“Thank you, Maura.” You smile in appreciation. “Is Keiko here?”

“About that…” She sighs. “I read the paper wrong. No one named Keiko will be attending.”

You shrug. “That’s no problem. Whoever they are, I’m sure they’ll be lovely.”

“I’m glad you think so! His school is the main rival of your school. Maybe the two of you might know each other?”

You feel your heart drop into your ass. “Do you know what his name is?”

“Why yes I do. The paper says his name is-”

A knock on the door and the steady footfall of two big feet entering the room cut short Maura's monologue. You immediately turn to face the intruder, but his eyes are only on Maura.

“Excuse me, miss. I’m Tsukishima Kei and I’m here for the internship.”

Despite the fact that he is standing in front of you, you make every effort to convince yourself that you are dreaming. You tune out the rest of their introductions and get lost in thought until Maura mentions you.

“…and you may know Y/n? I heard that her school is rivals with yours.”

When Tsukishima finally turns his head to look at you, your heart drops past your feet and lodges itself six feet under.

“I know of Y/n.” Tsukishima admits. “We were at a group event together not too long ago.”

“Well this internship will surely bring you two closer since it doesn’t seem like you are already. Why don’t you two get to know one another while I go make a new key card?” She raises an eye to Tsukishima. “You can have my seat.”

Tsukishima smiles politely at the little old woman and thanks her for her kindness. When she leaves the room, he glances in your direction and you swear you can see embers in his eyes. After giving him a fake smile and a forced laugh, you whip out your phone and immediately open the group chat.
