240 - Private Life

We have another movie we adore to discuss this week! Writer/director Tamara Jenkins has long gaps between films, but has nevertheless delivered an all-killer-no-filler lineup, beginning in the late 1990s with Slums of Beverly Hills and returning a decade later with the Oscar-nominated The Savages. Her next film another decade later, Private Life, starred Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti as New York creatives going through every hurdle to have a baby, including considering their adrift niece (played by Kayli Carter) as a surrogate. The film was a part of Netflix’s awards slate, but didn’t receive nearly the push as some of the streamer’s other films in their awards slate, but we will always eagerly await the next Tamara Jenkins project.

This episode, we talk about Kathryn Hahn’s formidable career of praised (and sometimes undersign) television performances, and the culmination of appreciation for the actress around WandaVision. We also discuss Giamatti’s “shady record exec” period, Netflix’s emergence as an awards player, and Hahn’s appearance in the THR Actress Roundtable and swooning for Rachel Weisz.

Film after film: Private Life (dir. Tamara Jenkins, 2018)

Another great, intimate, inquisitive film by Tamara Jenkins, who makes films so rarely that it is especially unnerving when they don't get due coverage and visibility. Private Life came out when Netflix was increasingly interested in prestige cinema films, yet kept betting on just few selected ones (Roma, in that case). It's my favorite performance by Hahn, casually impressive at wherever she appears, who is a bundle of nerves, layering thickly the prickly sweetness that, we can deduce, is otherwise her mode. Giamatti and everyone else deliver great performances, yet it's Hahn, who gets the camera's well-chosen attention.

Litsy’s Jellicle Family Headcanons

A few disclaimers before we get into this:

These are based on my experience and opinions after seeing the tour in May 2021. I’ll include a cast list at the bottom if you’re interested. Most of these were approximately formed at the time (I recently reread my thoughts from immediately after seeing the show), but are being finalized and articulated over a year later, so some of it is a bit more recent.

Obviously I went into seeing the tour already with strong opinions and ideas from the 1998 film, so as long as those weren’t contradicted by the tour, or the tour inspired new ideas, I’ve often defaulted to my original ideas. So this is mostly to compare the two productions to each other in terms of my thoughts on the relationships between the characters.

You are not immune to backstage shenanigans.

I’m picking and choosing which “chorus cats” for featured performers are included in the canon.

I didn’t include romantic relationships unless they resulted in a child.

I’m gonna go through the 1998 headcanons pretty quickly because I’ve shared these before.

1998 film family tree headcanons:

Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella are the parents of Macavity, Munkustrap, & Rum Tum Tugger. They are former mates; she left the tribe when their sons were still young. They still resent her for it by the time of the canon Jellicle Ball.

Macavity and Demeter are the parents of Plato. Mac and Dem were never mated.

Munkustrap and Demeter are the parents of Jemima. Munk and Dem are mates. Munk is also a father figure to Plato.

Coricopat & Tantomile are twins. They have no other family in the tribe.

Exotica Wallflower is Cassandra’s mother. She is also mates with George, but George is not Cassandra’s father.

Gus is Asparagus’s father.

Asparagus and Jellylorum are the parents of Tumblebrutus, Etcetera, & Pouncival, who are littermates. Asparagus and Jelly are mates.

Jennyanydots is the mother of Bombalurina.

Skimbleshanks’s deceased sister was the mother of Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer, who are littermates. He took them in when their mother died, as their father is unknown.

Skimble and Jenny are the adoptive parents of Mistoffelees and biological parents of Electra. Skimble and Jenny are mates.

Jellicles with no blood/familial relationships in the tribe: Alonzo, Bustopher Jones, Victoria.

2021 tourverse/revivalverse family tree headcanons:

Old Deuteronomy is the father of Macavity, Rum Tum Tugger, and Munkustrap. They are half-siblings.

Macavity and Demeter are the parents of Plato. Mac and Dem were never mated.

Munkustrap and Demeter are the parents of Jemima. Munk and Dem are in a relationship but not mated.

Bombalurina is Demeter’s mother.

Kaylie and Austin Strip It Down

Here is my new Video for Kaylie and Austin. I always like Kaylie and Austin together and I felt Austin treated Kaylie better then Carter had treated her. Austin may ended up breaking up with Kaylie when he blamed her when he did not make onto the male USA Gymanstic but he never cheated on her with Lauren like Carter did. Austin did ended going back and apologized to Kaylie for the way he treated her, him and Kaylie had probably mostly got back together because he ended up celebrating with Kaylie when she made onto Female USA Gymnastics Team. I think they continue to date while Kaylie was training for the Gymnastics and he supported her and also while she went to Gymnastics. I think they mostly likely ended up dating for several years before Austin had ended up asking Kaylie to Merry him. I figure that Austin may been at least two years older then Kaylie because I don't think in the series if they make clear how much older Austin was then Kaylie but to me year difference doesn't make a difference in a relationship. I think once after Kaylie and Austin got married they ended up having kids ane maybe at least one of their kids may ended up having a Love for Gymnastics just like both of them.

I’m rewatching Make it or break it because I feel like it. I took some notes rewatching the first episode, and although I probably won’t do this for the rest of them, here, have my list:

- Aaa remember when it was abc family and not freeform :’) yeah me too

- The music is so damn dramatic sjsjsjs, I love it.

- Not someone wanting Payson’s autograph sjsjsjs and she was like ????

- Everyone be training their whole life, except for Emily?? Genuinely wondering if this is a thing that could actually happen. Or like, has she actually trained her whole life? But not professionally?? Unclear, anyways.

- That intro coming back to me apparently.

- Emily: *is a child*

Lauren’s dad: ewww, she’s poor

- Lauren already hates everyone.

- Ok wait, why do they establish Lauren having bulimia in the first episode and then not doing shit with it??? Messed up considering Kaylie’s future ED storyline.
