"My character's name, Fuji(藤) means wisteria in Japanese. You might imagine Mt.Fuji(富士), but the character is different! Her name means the flower one. I really like her name. So Carlos(@thecarlosrosario) chose the kimonos and the cloth with wisteria patterns of pale blue and purple tone. And my hair accessories like ribbons are basically purple too." Moeka Hoshi
In Japan, Wisteria symbolizes youth, love, and perseverance, and represents the transience of life. Interestingly, there is a kabuki dance called "Fuji Musume" aka Wisteria Maiden where the heroine carries wisteria to symbolize the sentiments of love.
It perfectly reflect her character and her love for her family and house that she's willing to protect at all cost. The costume designer and production team really outdone themselves with their attention to detail to every single character on set!

A very rough Sesshomaru in a woman's kimono. Well he was always wearing a furisode so I just threw in an obi on it. I may fix this up or not.

For #FrockFriday, this was definitely one of the highlights of the #KimonoStyle exhibition at The Met:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man's Under Kimono (Nagajuban) with Spider and Spiderweb Taisho (1912-26) or Showa (1926-89) period, 1920s-30s Crepe silk (chirimen) with freehand paste-resist dyeing (yüzen) The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
"Worn under an outer garment or at home, the nagajuban frequently bore eye-catching designs that would be seen only by family and friends. The large spider perched on the right shoulder of the crepe silk robe, whose back is covered with a web against gray clouds, exemplifies such a decoration. The pattern could be a reference to Tsuchigumo [Yōkai], a monstrous, shape-shifting spider featured in Japanese myths and legends as well as in Noh and Kabuki plays. The dramatic, supernatural subject was also featured in ukiyo-e prints, which might have inspired this nagajuban's composition."

Fun fact: Japan is soon going to contain one (1) very excited Elliott, with an unreasonable amount of money to spend on souvenirs and niche af cultural visits!
I'm honestly not sure how much I'll be able to be online for the next two weeks (probably not very much); I'll still be available on Discord, and I might log into Tumblr every now and then to infodump about Shinto shrines.
I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA!!!! 😁

I drew this a while ago, but here's a picture of everyone in their kabuki disguises in Trials of Trust. As of the latest chapter, we have everyone in their outfit. One small mistake I made was drawing Cyan Nya in her kimono series kimono when in the story she wore the same one as Red Nya. Oops.

Final Fantasy X Kabuki stream
This post will remained pinned until end of streaming date July 19, 2023 (Wed.) - November 11, 2023 (Sat.). My region qualifies~~~
Tumblr media
Two videos, enough story / plot scene change for you to pick your save points to load up after breaks
A little promo vid and me gushing over it

My experience with opera is limited, sat through 3 musicals and one Cantonese opera. Japan has anime musicals - Fate Grand Order and Yuyu Hakusho being ones that I wanted to find ways to watch. Kabuki is totally new for me.
I almost forgot that Kabuki is an all male cast Yes it actually took me a while to remember why that side quest in Kugane was structured like that, they were a Kabuki troupe. I knew I was forgetting something. Yeah Kugane's The flooding of Doma Castle. suddenly Hylnyan's Oni of Light (incognito and light armour) doesn't look out of place, when I look at Rikku over there.
Sooo SquareEnix, like any chance of Maria and Draco or I want to be your canary?

Asian Clothing Figurines Review
Asian Clothing: Japanese Kimono
Kimono Type: Kabuki Kimono: Tachiyaku
Accuracy Rating: 5/5
Explanation: Kabuki lovers, pay attention! This is the most one-to-one representation of a traditional kabuki character I've ever seen! Luffy is meant to be the character Tadanobu Sato from the kabuki play, Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura. This character is actually a disguise worn by a kitsune (played by the same actor in a different costume) that uses it to get close to the mistress of Minamoto Yoshitune, who has a hand drum made from the skin of its kitsune parents. You can compare the figurine's costume to the kabuki character's original appearance below.
Tumblr media
(Source: https://hobby.dengeki.com/news/973412/)
The details are striking! Firstly, he's hitting the mie (or pose) very similar to the signature mie for the character. They also simulated the ipponguma-style kumadori makeup, which is often used for roles that are seen as strong and reliable, but also rough and rascally. Sounds like Luffy, doesn't it? Secondly, his kimono is tit-for-tat with the traditional costume! He wears a fringed men's kimono with the sleeves bound up using a nio-dasuki as a tasuki. The nio-dasuki (仁王襷) is the thick, purple-and-white braided cord that's often seen worn by guardian kings surrounding Buddhist dieties and sumo wrestlers; anyone wearing nio-dasuki is trying to evoke the power and majesty of those fierce Buddhist guardians. Lastly, he has the signature twin swords of a samurai with a maroon-colored sheath and bright green sageo (i.e. hanging cord) as well as the big sloppy bow for his obi musubi! The only real difference is that Luffy's kimono has a black background, while the original costume's is bright red. I find the difference negligible, however, since it still features the golden fringe design on the hem and the genji-guruma (源氏車, imperial cartwheels) motif throughout. Excellent figure for both fans of One Piece and kabuki!

"Defective Vinsmoke bros", now in Wano.
The text says something to the effect of "Tie Dye Brothers: Wano Chaos". Specifically, this kind of tie dye (it kind of looks like their hair).
I really need to finish the WCI scenes just to clear out the sad baggage before making more crazy scenes, but I keep on having wild ideas, so here we are. Maybe more Wano stuff later.
One thing for sure though: RIP Law's sanity.
They're still "off" even in Wano because they sometimes can go "off" for, like, many days. Not just a few minutes and hours. It's really random. That's how their hair get stripey. When they're off, the hair grows out blond, but then when they switch back "on" it grows in the rainbow colours again. So each hair strand are actually stripey.
(I think too hard about these things sometimes)
Man, all those fanarts with Yonji and Zoro making the Spiderman meme or being confused for each other aren't wrong. I got confused for a second while drawing this myself.
Also additional LOLs/thinking too hard:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*) The extensions are not streaked blond like their natural hair
*) Tuna cutting knives can be easily as big as katana, with some even going over 100 cm in length (this is about the size of an oodachi sword). In Shokugeki no Sanji, if Sanji had owned one of these he wouldn't need to borrow Zoro's sword, hahahaha.
Random long talk about the clothing patterns:
This drawing is kind of a remix of the 2019 One Piece kimono calendar, but I made the patterns more relevant to their powers instead of just traditional yukata/kimono patterns. And, well, Sanji is just wearing what he wore in the series.
Calendar:
Tumblr media
Kabuki costumes inspirations (Wano has a lot of Kabuki inspirations anyway):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ichiji's fire pattern is based on the costume of Narukami
Niji's cloud and lighting is based on Fuwa Banzaemon
Yonji's wheel patterns is based on Genkurou Kitsune or Kitsune Tadanobu (same character from the same play, but has two names in ukiyoe)
Random aside, the Tadanobu role is probably the most "iconic" of all Kabuki looks, it's what people tend to imagine when they hear "Kabuki". The pose, the makeup, the costume, everything:

"12.." you took a deep breath while counting another soon to be dead nobushi samurai. "Its truly a shame.. such distinguished warriors as ourselves can succumb to banditry." You raised your cursed blade. preparing to kill the nobushi samurai as the rain drenched through your hair. "Y/n!?..Y/n? are you here?!" You lowered your katana as the sound of pattering footsteps through the forest grew louder, along with a familiar voice. "Kabuki?..What are you doing here?" the shorter man approached you. Unbothered by the rain as his amulet dangled from his kimono. "Well..Niwa said you would be here..So I went looking for you!" You sighed, cursing your brother in your head for bringing your lover all the way out here. "Buki.. Its been awfully dangerous in inazuma. You should be back at the estate, WITH niwa." He sucked his teeth at your remark. "Ugh. Who cares about that Y/N. Cmon.. I wanna hang out with you already~ and maybe have some fun~" He peaked his head over your shoulder to notice the wounded samurai behind you. "Who is this?" You turned around, now holding your blade up again. "THIS. Is the danger ive been trying to tell you about buki.'" Kubuki scoffed andwalked around you Infront of the nobushi. "Looks weak to me." he grabbed the samurai by its helmet, watching as thin streaks of blood could be seen brushing through the outside. He then whispered into its ear. "A pathetic excuse for a samurai like you shouldn't have existed. If it was up to me, I would've killed you already. Humans like you always take up my time with y/n..My everything. Know your place."
The rain picked up, Now turning into roaring thunder and lightning which crackled through the sky. Your primary concern of killing changed once your lover arrived. Now you we're focused on getting him back to the estate safe. You held onto his hand, He turned away from the samurai and blushed as you sheathed your sword. Now walking him through the forest. The walk was silent, mostly consisting of you looking around at your surroundings and Kabuki in absolute love with your dedication to protect him. A simple eep or yell and you'd be ready to protect him in a heartbeat. You then broke the silence. "Our almighty shogun hasnt been doing a good job of maintaining order within inazuma. Day after day things get worse buki. More samurai leaving the clan, more people betraying us. Thats why i keep telling Niwa to not send you on wild chases for me." He frowned while gripping tighter onto your hand. 'The almighty shogun' was his mother. He couldnt do much to change her will regarding eternity. After all, To her. He was nothing but a liability. "im..sorry..I cant do much about my mother y/n. If only I wasnt so..Emotional..Like she said things wouldnt have-" He was cut off when you suddenly smashed your lips against his. Pulling him into a messy kiss then pulling away to witness his dummed out expression, how the rain fell against his shiny purple hair. "Dont be sorry baby. Your perfect just the way you are. Infact If you we're our archon i think id have to put in more work to impress you."
You two eventually made it back to the clan's estate, fingers intertwined together as you both settled into the kitchen. You sat on the couch. Resting and wiping off any remaining blood from your weapon. "Oh Y/n! I was with some blacksmiths earlier and they offered me some tea. I didnt think much of it, but they insisted I tried it and it was really good!" He sat beside you and placed a cup on the table. Seeing kabuki so happy over something as dull as tea made your heart ache. You grabbed the cup and blew onto it before consuming the drink. "Huh...whats this buki?" He smiled at your reaction. Did he like it? "Its bitter black tea! its great right? I took one cup but then i just kept drinking more and more until they had none left! hah hah.. but some old man gave me his recipe so I can make some for you!" "Thats great kubuki, Im glad your starting to enjoy being around everyone."
You sat closer to him. Now placing your hand along his body. "How about..I make you feel even better? Would you like that?" His body shivered at your request. "Y-yes..Id like that.." you got up off the couch and the shorter man followed you to your room. Closing the behind him then pushing him against the wall. "mmm..How about I treat you right here tonight buki? would my baby boy like that?" He let out a small moan at your sudden agression. "Ah~ yes~ I want it." You bit and licked along the side of his neck. Kabuki covered his mouth at the sudden wave of pleasure. "Shit..Bet this cock is so hard for me isnt it?" he nodded his head while still covering his mouth. You slightly pulled down his pants, enough to reveal his cock already covered in precum. "Your such a needy boy buki~" You whispered into his ear. Rubbing the tip of his cock with your thumb "Y..Y/n..~" "Yes baby?" "W-want.. more.." you laughed. "Hmm? what was that buki? Need you to get a little louder f' me." tears began to form in his eyes. He wanted you to push him harder against the wall and stroke him so roughly he screamed for you to let him cum. "Please! Go faster Daddy!!" he yelled out desperately. "Anything for you baby boy~" You grabbed him by the hips, pushing his body closer against your own as he held onto the wall, Crushing him in-between you and it. "Oh fuck~ YES~" You roughly grinded your body against him, grabbing tight on his cock while stroking it. "Fuck...Love how desperate you get for me buki' like a slut." "I Wanna be your slut daddy~ Wanna be your good boy~" he panted hard with how close he felt to cumming, how much his body burned for you. "you are buki~ so fucking good for me. Cum on daddys hand, let me taste you baby~" he yelled out your name with a sharp cry. Ropes of his cum oozed onto your fingers. "hah..Such a good boy buki'" you tasted his cum. Letting him watch as you licked it all off of his fingers. His grip fell light against the wall, falling back into your embrace "Y/n..." "Shh... come baby.. lets relax a little." you guided him to your bed, helping him take off the rest of his kimono and switch into lighter clothes of yours, Rubbing your hands through his hair as he laid besides in bed. "Y/n...I love you, I love you so much..is that okay?" You pulled him into a hug. Letting him sink into your touch by how happy yet sad you we're by his words. 'is that okay?' "Of course it is Buki, I love you more than anything else in the world." He smiled, then suddenly remembering his conversation with your brother. "Y/n..Are you not going to be home early tomorrow? Miwa said you we're going to be busy." he pouted, hoping you could cancel what ever you had to do to stay with him again.
"Im afraid so my love, I have to bring him on a acquaintance he has with a man known as 'the doctor' We're going far out into tartarsuna and I dont want him getting injured on the way there or back. But please, Dont worry about me. I will be back for you. No matter what."

Hello! i saw your kimono drawing guide, and i have some questions. I saw this art and was wondering about a few things: what is the tied knot& tassel things on the sleeves for? and, what hairstyle is the lady wearing? If you know, please tell me! If you don't know, could it be possible to direct me to someone that might? Thank you for taking the time to answer, if you're able! Have a lovely night/day!
Hi and thank you for your question :) The ukiyoe you are sharing is by Utagawa Kunisada and titled Genji rokujo no hana (源氏六條の花), or "Cherry Blossoms at Genji's Rokujô Mansion". It is part of a three prints set:
Tumblr media
It depicts an imaginary scenery from The tale of Genji, and the young lady playing with her pet cat is the princess Onna San no Miya.
Characters are not shown wearing period accurate clothes (from Heian era), but luscious Edo period attires. Because of her rank, the young princess is wearing what Edo princesses would, especially the trademark hairstyle named fukiya 吹輪.
You'll find below a translation from a costume photobook I did a while ago. Note the big bridge style front hairpin, and the drum like one in the back. Princesses from the buke (samurai class) would also have dangling locks called aikyôge (I also found the term okurege), but I am not sure kuge princesses (noble class) wore them too.
Tumblr media
There is a whole dispute about this hairstyle, as we are not actually sure it was worn as such by actual princesses. This style may have in fact started as a somehow cliché bunraku/kabuki costume used to depict princesses (think a bit like Western Cinderella-types princess gowns). Nowadays, it is found only as a theater style, or worn by Maiko during Setsubun season.
For comparison, here is character Shizuka Gozen from kabuki play Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura:
Tumblr media
As for the dangling cords, I covered those in a past ask about kamuro that you can find here (part 1 / part 2). TL:DR: I am still not sure what is the exact name for those decorations (kazari himo? sode no himo?).
But their use is pretty much linked to 3 things:
1) luck + protection (knots have auspicous meanings),
2) reinforcing weak points of garnment (here: sleeves wrist opening)
3) cuteness impact, as much like furisode (long sleeves kimono) those dangling ribbons were mostly seen on girls/young unmarried ladies by the Edo period
All the design elements chosen by Utagawa Kunisada for his Onna San no Miya stress own young and carefree she is still (which considering her narrative arc is in fact a bit sad... like all Genji Monogatari stories). BUT: bonus points for pet cat!
Hope that helps :)

Welcome to
🇯🇵Elliott's Japan Trivia Corner!🇯🇵
Where you can learn random stuff about Edo-era Japan (and sometimes other periods) from your local neurodivergent nerd ✌️✨️
.
So y'all have heard of Kabuki right? If you haven't, it was the more popular form of theatre during Edo (by opposition to the more intellectual nō theatre), and it's got awesome makeup and fun flashy costumes.
Like a lot of cool things, it was created by women, who where then slowly driven out of it by men 🙃 But it was also super queer! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
Kabuki originated from female travelling entertainers, then later welcomed male actors. Plays mostly happened in the pleasure districts, and they eventually kinda merged with prostitution. Long story short, if theatre-goers really fancied one of the actresses, they could go home with her for a reasonable fee 💸
The shogun, who didn't like many things and especially did not like fun, decided that this was unacceptable. And that the best course of action was obviously to ban women from performing kabuki.
Wanna guess what happened ?
That's right. The exact same thing continued, but with male prostitutes instead 👍 Good job, shogun.
Male actors playing female roles were called onnagata, and they were considered an ideal of feminine grace and beauty, that all the Edo-era women tried to copy. Which, if you've ever been to a drag show, is pretty understandable imho 💅
(Some onnagata apparently stayed in feminine attire even off-stage, which I personally cannot interpret differently than "Me? 🏳️‍⚧️Trans🏳️‍⚧️?? Noooooo, you misunderstand, I'm just reeeaaallyyy into method acting! 🤞")
