BUG TIME
So earlier this week I spent a whole day just writing; working on a bunch of different scripts…and one of those was the KQR script. ^^ And I’m ecstatic to report that Episodes 1-3 have been written in full!
They ended up being split in half between MK/DMK/GK’s antics, and the more serious plot involving ^these characters. And one thing I noticed while writing their half of the story was how…dark, it felt compared to the rest of the series (Magical Friends included). o_o Morpho especially feels like a truly evil character, not just a ‘jerk’ like Magolor or Dark Meta Knight. I think making them all smiley and calm about their diabolical plans sort of backfired; like, I accidentally characterized them as a heartless manipulator who relishes in people’s suffering. ⚆_⚆;;;
If you’re worried, it’s really not that bad; certainly nothing that the Disney censors would take issue with. ^^; But I may try to tone it down a bit in future drafts, if only in the interest of consistency. And if it turns out that I can’t, well…I guess I wouldn’t mind KQR being MF’s slightly edgier sister series. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Conflict: Method and Meaning
When I write stories, and I'm not emotionally decompressing something awful, and I'm not satisfying some sadism through breaking fictional characters' hearts and minds, then it's odd to hear that conflict is the central feature of every story.
There should be another word for it, but because there isn't I want to expand the definition of the term conflict in this context. Story conflict can be a curiosity about a world that the central character or the reader doesn't know. It can be everything or something about that world that the central character doesn't know, even if they're not curious. There can be a conflict that gets that character started with living through the story, but by the end the only resolution is character development from a state that previously wasn't the obvious problem in the first place. There can be the conflicts between two equally true and valid tenets that cannot coexist, but, here they are in the same story, ready to crash into each other. There can be the more classical conflicts: exile, betrayal, rebellion, disaster, bereavement, and so on.
One distinction I heard and liked is that if the central character is a shining-armoured knight errant from a fairy tale, then the external conflicts can be dragons while a character's internal conflicts are knightly ordeals or vigils (but the former I have only read in Tamora Pierce's Lioness Quartet, and the latter in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.)
The dragons are what happens in the story, or the plot conflict.
The ordeal, or the vigil, is why the story has any meaning.
That's a rudimentary understanding of story conflict. It is something that I've found helpful, and can go through the motions of constructing a complete story around the resolution to the central conflict.
Beyond that rudimentary, though, I tend to think in two contradictory bits of advice. The first is to develop the story around a strong central theme, to have a clear idea of what you want to say with this story. The second is not to do that, because a heavyhanded message removes the nuances and complexities that give a story momentum and pizzazz. If you truly do have a drive towards the theme that you're planning then that's going to make its way in there even if you don't plan it. It's going to barge in at every opportunity and seep between the cracks in the walls.
When it comes to troubleshooting writer's block or a dry spell in creativity, any of these might work.
I might start out excited by what I simply think is a nifty story idea, like "What if a haemophiliac royal prince was turned into a vampire?" or, "What if the myth of Galatea ended as tragically as the myth of Tithonus?" and deep personal issues start to show between the lines.
I have to believe those are the themes and conflicts that make a story work. As Ernest Hemingway said of writing, there's nothing to it, "All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed."

New Frontier A Hollow Knight and Bug Fables crossover OC fic.
Full fic is under the cut!
PLEASE REBLOG!! MANY HOURS WENT INTO THIS AND I’D RLLY APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT!!
It had been a very interesting trip, taking the ferry from the continent Bugaria resided to the main continent known as The Outlands. Team Snakemouth, the heros of Bugaria were treated like celebrities everywhere they went. Everyone knowing them all by name and singing their praises, and if some weren't convinced of their greatness, many times bugs would contest them in combat and were quickly swayed into seeing their power. Vi especially enjoyed this attention.. being one of the first bees to truly venture beyond the Hive and find her place in the world as an explorer and rouge. The other two would often need to reel her in. Usually Leif did not mind Vi's more combative nature, so long as it wasn't a major risk.. though her pride is what both Leif and Kabbu would regularly keep in check. Leif appeared largely indifferent about their praise, but beneath his cold exterior, his friends knew he couldn't help but be grateful and flattered. Kabbu on the other hand loved the praise as much as Vi did, but unlike her, made sure to ground himself. If their mission around the legendary Everlasting Sapling taught him anything, it was that nothing was indestructible. Not the sapling, not his team, and certainly not him. After their first adventure however the one thing they all unanimously agreed on, was that they longed to continue their quests and even venture beyond Bugarias borders, and travel the mainlands.. The Outlands. They set sail into the world... the main continent.. the setting of their greatest adventures yet.
Team Snakemouth now walked on these ancient grounds.. and already the way they'd seen the world was beyond different than the world that came into view around them all. Chompy, the fourth and most beloved member of the team, who was resting comfortably around Vis neck and shoulders spread her autumn colored leaves.. taking in the bright sun. The other three gave a breath of pure awe.. The Outlands were full of rocky and mountainous terrain. Great mountains could be seen in the distance, their might and elegance seen plain and true even in the most distant horizons. "OOOUGH WHERE DO WE GO FIRST?! THE MOUNTAINS? THE PLAINS? THAT GIANT CLIFF?? OR- OR MAYBE WE COULD SEE WHATS OUT AT SEA OVER THERE!!" Squealed the VERY excited honeybee! "I'm not sure Vi! But my.. it is truly beautiful.. just as the tales foretold!" replied Kabbu. Looking just as giddy as Vi! The sun shining onto his iridescent green shell. "We feel like we've entered an entirely different realm. We can already feel an abundance of magic and energy here.." Leif remarked, spreading his navy blue and pale yellow accented wings. "Yeah yea, but can you imagine what kinda crazy treasure we could fine here? I heard this place is ancient as HELL!" "If I recall correctly Vi, The Outlands were settled eons before Bugarias continent was! It was filled with ancient scattered kingdoms." Kabbu knelt and placed his clawed hand on the ground, as if he were resting his claws on a monument of ancient history and peering into its secrets. "Hundreds of years ago, these lands were barren wastes. Polluted and corrupted with a dark substance.. These Outlands were once called The Wastelands, lawless and filled with mad bugs. That is why these scattered kingdoms existed. In a world devoid of life and law, someone had to do something." "Are these lands not still devoid of law? Law only exists in those kingdoms still we'd imagine." Inquired Leif. Kabbu stands back up and looks at his moth friend. "Well, yes and no. Some of the rulers of these lands keep an eye on the Outlands as a means of protecting potential citizens." Vi looked at Kabbu and raised a brow, "Jeez how do you even know all this stuff Kabbu?" "Well! If we planned on visiting this place, we might as well get to know it's history a little better." Vi shrugged, "Meh, fair. But hey, there's a lotta history in treasure toooo.~" "We anticipated a response like that. Lets not dally then. Kabbu, you know more about this place than either of us, do you know where we could head first?" Kabbu hummed wonderingly. "We could potentially head for the mountains, there are a fair few kingdoms there and we could stock up on supplies for the rest of our journey!" "FUCK YEA MOUNTAINS!!" Vi cheered, much to Kabbus displeasure hearing her curse like that again. "VI!! Watch your language!". Leif proceeded only to laugh.
It had been a long day, traveling to the base of the mountains. Bandits and beasts making attempts on their supplies and even their lives. Nothing they weren't used to really. Though there were a disturbing number of poachers. A dark stain from the Wastelands past economic practices; slaying bugs and selling valuable parts of them to the black market. Primarily wings, fluff, horns, hard shells and stingers, unique defenses of specific bugs, even certain pheromones to lure in bugs like ants. To say that their encounters with the poachers did not shake the group up a fair amount.. would be a dirty lie. They triumphed, but were still very on edge if they could harvest them. The sun began to set however, and the quartet was weary from the long day. Not a bad day, only a long one. Whimsy tainted by the reminder that the life of an explorer was still a dangerous one. Regardless, the team kept their spirits up. Knowing that the next day would bring great discovery! Following a nice meal and usual banter expected of their team, Team Snakemouth set up their temporary beds, and went to sleep for the night. Though one member of the team was far less of a deep sleeper than the others.. hearing faint, yet heavy footsteps, caused on of Vis antennae to perk up. She perked up, slowly looking around the area.. bathed in moonlight, yet sheltered from it in some areas with the rocks and shelter of the mountain and nearby terrain. But she could clearly see it. In the distance.. a tall, large and shadowed figure a fair distance from the team. It's silhouette was not one that Vi could identify, it appeared to have multiple horns, but the rest of its body held no defining traits. No abdomen, no wings, just a horned head and a long cloak.. as well as.. something spilling from its head that nearly dragged against the ground. Was... this even a bug? The lack of identifying features deeply frightened the bee. She remembered the last time she saw something like this. The reminder of the canniness of the Dead Landers shot a spine straight through her of pure fear and stress. This was... big. Not nearly as big as that.. thing with those large orange eyes was.. but it was still big whatever it was. Vi, now thoroughly terrified, slowly grabbed her beemerang and slowly approached the large rock that sheltered them from outside sight. Slowly she turned back to look at the figure. They appeared to sit down, back against the base of the mountain, sifting through items that Vi could not properly see due to the lighting. She squints to try and get a better look, before her heart was thrown into the base of her stinger. It looked at her. Two bright blue sparks for eyes stared directly at her. As quick as she could she immediately ducked back behind the rock, stifling any and every sound she made by desperately covering her mouth. Claws digging into her cheeks as fear overtook her. Dammit! Being stuck in this sort of situation scared the hell out of her, no, terrified her beyond words, but at this point she was starting to grow frustrated. They were fighters goddammit! Not cowards! Her and the others took out way worse than this, she- they could do this! So then why would her limbs not move an inch? Why was she still paralyzed with horror despite her frustration and rebellion against these intense feelings of fear?? She held her beemerang in a death grip, shaking intensely, which only grew worse when those footsteps began to approach once again. Move. MOVE! "VI! KABBU! CHOMPY! ON YOUR GUARD!" yelled out another voice. The familiar crack of Leifs magic smacking against the carapace of an enemy bug, as the large figure stumbled backwards with a grunt. Leif stood over his resting spot, glowing with that cold, blue magic. Kabbu and Chompy following suit. Chompy let out a horrendous roar, the chomper had grown in size since the teams first adventure, and while not as big as the mother she would eventually become, she was still quite formidable. Horrifyingly, the other "bug" let out an enormous and otherworldly sounding roar in response, as the appendages that came down its head flared up like black vines. Even Chompy recoiled at the sight. The creature leaped back, drawing a large sword and glaring with those bright blue eyes. "Vi!" Kabbu looked over to the trembling bee. "Come on, it's okay. Lets take care of this!" He held out his hand to help her up. Snapping out of her paralysis, she glared a serious look at Kabbu. "R-right!". The dark figure loomed over all four of them. Squinting at them as they readied for battle. "Four on one don't seem too fair.." it spoke.. it's voice, surprisingly normal sounding, though it had a sort of accent that struck the four as unfamiliar. "Yeah?! And NEITHER DOES SNEAKING UP ON A GROUP WHILE THEY'RE ASLEEP!!" Shouted Vi, anger and fear clear in her young voice. She threw the beemerang with all of her might, making a sharp CRACK as it made contact with the beast. It growled.. "I was doin no such thin' lil girl! I saw you gettin' a good look at me while I was lookin' through mah thin's!" Kabbus expression lightened a bit, "Wait- then maybe this was a misunderstanding?". The creature huffed, "S'fine. M' a big guy after all.. tend t'scare a few bugs out ere.. but since ya'll got up wantin' a fight then lets have one!" The creatures voice went from a gruff, tired and frustrated tone, to sounding as if it had all the energy in the world with the prospect of a battle. "BRING IT ON BIG GUY!! WE'LL WIPE THE FLOOR WITH YOU!!" Vi angrily shouted. Kabbu and Leif looked to one another, Vi's rage evident in her tone and posture. Kabbu and Leif knew there was no bringing her back from that, but they couldn't simply leave her to fight alone. They straightened themselves out once more. The creature turned out to be quite quick for its size, and it was able to take one hell of a beating. The Team would need to react quickly to block and chip away at its health. Saving Team Points primarily for healing and reviving, as well as low cost special attacks. Unlike The Everlasting King, it could heal but it could not steal health from them, and healing spent its entire turn. What sucked however was that his defense was high and his attacks hit hard. It was tough for sure, multiple times the team would go down, but they got right back up thanks to Kabbus pep talk and Vis shared stash. Eventually, for as long as the fight went on, it eventually ended with Team Snakemouth as the victors. As the beast finally fell, the light of dawn spilled over the land. Everyone was weary and very injured. The beast chuckled, "Good fight... hh..hhh.. ain't had one like that n' a while I gotta say. Good job.." "Who.. hhh. are you.?" "And more importantly WHAT are you..?" Kabbu asked before quickly being interrupted by Vi. With the light of dawn more of the beat became visible. Its horned head was an off-white shell, that looked almost like a mask, even the right side of it had a long crack that stretched from the top of its head to the base of its chin with some grass stains littering it in some places. It wore a black and grey patchwork cloak with a blue medal clipped to it and lastly, it's eyes. Not fully blue, in fact mostly black with blue pupils that looked like sapphire rings. What spilled down from its head however? None of the bugs could identify. It wasn't antennae, or fur, and while they somewhat looked like vines, they were smooth and black and even appeared to glimmer as if they were wet. "M'names Finnley. M' from a far away Kingdom ere.. betcha mighta heard uh Hallownest. But guessin yer not quite sure what I am thats- actually a toss up huehue!" Kabbu perked up a little bit. Despite his exhaustion, he couldn't help but be excited. "I have heard mentions of that place, yes! But its whereabouts and information I am unfortunately unaware of." It was hard to tell, but Finnleys face appeared.. vaguely happy.. despite lacking a mouth and appearing more like a mask. "Well. S'where me n all my kind 're from. We're vessels, n all of us 'r siblin's too! Ya might actually run intuh a few'uh us out ere!" Leif canted his head slightly, "Vessels. An odd name for a species of bug.." "Yeah and how are ALL of you siblings?" Vi interjected, skeptical of Finnleys claims. "Well it's a long ass story, one ion't think you'd wanna hear all of from me. But you stick round long enough you'll find out soon enough. S'pretty common knowledge ere." Finnley perks up a bit. "Oh! Shit I should probably heal yall up actually. Er, gunna need t' hold yalls hands t'do it though, if ya don' mind." Leif extended his hand, aware of what this could be. He's proven correct when white energy swirls around Finnley, moving over to Leif. Patching up his wounds. Soul focus. An ability utilized by only gods, higher beings and powerful mages. Kabbu and Vis eyes widened. "Woah what the hell?? How did you do that??" Asked Vi, amazed. "Soul Focus." spoke Leif. "But we believed only higher beings, gods and powerful mages could do something like that.. we did not take you to be any of those things." "S'a long story, again, like I said. But ey. S'th' least I can do after scarin yuhs." Finnley chuckles before healing Kabbu, Vi and Chompy as well. "Thank you kindly Finnley. We should likely introduce ourselves as well come to think.. My name is Kabbu. This is Leif, this is Vi, and this.." he lifts up the chomper plant. "Is Chompy!". Finnley giggles again, stroking Chompys head with his finger. "D'aw! Cutie pie! S'one hell of a murder machine but a cutie pie nontheless." "We agree wholeheartedly." Agreed Leif. After a while of speaking, Finnley gave the group a map of the Outlands, as well as what places to avoid, and a list of hotspots to rest up and stock up before actually making it to a kingdom. "If yer thinkin' uh goin up t'the mountains, ah'd suggest goin t' Xhalyun. Eroanne's nearby Xhalyun too n both 'r cold as hell, but Xhalyun shit is a helluva lot cheaper than Eroanne, closer too." Finishing that thought he handed Kabbu the map, to which he made a delighted squeak of excitement. "Thank you kindly, Finnley. Despite first impressions I am very glad to have run into you!" Leif nods in agreement as Finnley lifts up his bag. "Ain't no problem sir. I wish ya'll luck out there. N hey, maybe if we meet again ya'll can tell me shit bout Bugaria. Been wantin t'head over there myself someday." "Oh you'd love it there! It's a wonderful place.." Finnley nodded, before kneeling down to Vi. "Ay kid, sorry fer scarin' ya." He holds out his hand and Vi raises a brow. "Let's battle again sometime aight?" Vi hesitates for a second before her usual smirk returns to her, placing her hand in his for a handshake. "Abso-goddamn-lutely heheh!! Better be a bigger challenge next time though!!" Finnley gave a great laugh and stood back up again. "You too kiddo! If you ain't gettin better ain't no damn point in it! I'll catch ya'll later uh?" "For certain. Take care." remarked Leif with a smile, as both teams parted ways.
As the towering Vessel took his leave.. he chuckled to himself.. "..Seeker.. Wanderer.. I wish ya'll could come with me when I go t'Bugaria.. I know ya'll'd love diggin' intuh th' place.." "...Maybe one day we will.. I'd love that."

admiring (luke skywalker x reader)
pairing: luke x reader (romantic, super fluffy)!!  request: (hey pls message me if you got this, tumblr eats my asks way too often) HEY HEY HEY, how bout a lil luke fic where he catches the reader admiring his x-wing shortly post-ANH on Hoth, and he teases the reader that they might like his ship more than him? details/specifics up to you :> requested by: @g1sunstreaker a/n: i’m finally getting around to all of my requests! this one has been sitting in my inbox for a little while and now i’m finally writing it, i’m excited. luke is one of my favorite characters, he’s really adorable so thank you for sending this in and giving me an excuse to write for him-
luke skywalker’s crush on you was completely, and totally obvious to leia and han. the two of them also had feelings for each other (both of them finally acting on it on the falcon prior to the destruction of the death star). leia loved teasing him about it every now and then, knowing full well you thought of him the same as he did you. han didn’t know that, since leia promised you that she’d keep your secret from the two of them. if han knew, so would luke. those two were practically best friends now.
luke was practically a celebrity now with the rebels, and he was suddenly a well known, inspiring face to the galaxy. but with that fame came the target on his back from the empire, which he decided to ignore. he was here for a good time, not a long time.
his x-wing definitely needed repairing after the destruction of the death star, and he knew it. he was going to ask you to help him repair it as a makeshift ‘date’ without him saying the words ‘would you want to go out on a date with me?’ to prevent his heart from pounding out of his chest. it seemed like that didn’t go very well as he chickened out right after walking up to you.
unbeknownst to luke, you already wanted to fix up his x-wing anyways. it was beautiful to you, more beautiful than the other x-wings in the hangar for no reason at all. they all looked about the same, but you assumed you liked this one more because it belonged to luke.
the rebellion’s base was on hoth, the icy, freezing planet home to plenty of terrifying creatures. you couldn’t remember the last time you went outside other than for helping someone else do something. luke had liked it. he told you he grew up on tatooine, a sandy dust planet in the outer rim. he told you he hated it there, but when obi-wan had asked him for help in the task of getting leia out of the death star with han. obi-wan didn’t make it, and that fact shook luke down to the bone. he felt guilty about it, but he couldn’t let his death get to him.
you’d heard of obi-wan kenobi before, of course. he was a famous jedi knight during the clone wars. you could’ve swore he died before you were born but knowing that obi-wan protected luke with all he had left in him earned him a newfound respect for him. if you were able to ever meet obi-wan, you’d be sure to thank him for keeping luke alive for you to meet.
leia, being your best friend, told you all about her being saved from the death star. she was saved by luke, han, and chewbacca, the incredibly tall, imposing looking wookiee. luckily, he was one of the sweetest souls you would ever meet. he was fiercely protective of his friends, and now, that included you.
it felt weird being included in their little quartet. you thought they would solely stick to themselves before but right as they arrived and became official members of the resistance, they were constantly away from each other and meeting new people. han, of course, flirting with everyone he met even if he did have a liking towards leia.
you knew why you liked luke. he was kind, you could see it in his eyes. his heart was full of compassion and love, he was determined to defeating the empire and seeing the end of darth vader no matter the cost. he would set his life on the line to protect anyone, and that was only the first part. his personality was lovely, and he always found a way to make those around him laugh.
his physical features were only a bonus to the beautiful personality he had. his eyes were so loving as they maintained eye contact with you whenever you talked. you could’ve swore his eyes sparkled whenever he talked about something or someone he loved. leia told you his eyes sparkled like that whenever he talked about you, but you refused to believe her and shook it off anyways. there was no way you could make luke look like that.
he always had a smile on his face, and his eyes crinkled upwards whenever he did so. you loved being able to make him smile. luke was single handedly the most beautiful person you’d ever seen.
the smile on your face grew as you worked quietly on said persons x-wing. he didn’t have to ask you to do this, you wanted to do it yourself. he was practically an angel to you, always being kind and polite whenever he asked you for something. you wanted to pay him back for all of the things he did for you for fixing and upgrading his x-wing. hopefully he’d like it.
you wiped the sweat off of your forehead, and stood up off of the stool you’d pulled next to your work space. you backed away from the x-wing and crossed your arms, staring up at it with curious intent. what else could i do to better it? you asked yourself, chewing on your bottom lip in thought. you quickly walked a circle around it, admiring it from all angles. it was perfect.
you sat down your materials on the table. they weren’t actually.. yours. they were luke’s. you figured he wouldn’t mind you using them to repair something that belonged to him. you made sure they were all in good condition before placing them in the toolbox.
you heard someone clear their throat from behind you, and you turned around in shock. it was luke, a beautiful smile etched across his features. the smile you knew you fell in love with. “luke!” you laughed, awkwardly, scratching the back of your neck. “what are you doing?” he asked you, taking a step towards you as you turned back towards his x-wing, desperately trying to hide the growing blush on your face.
“you don’t like my x-wing more than me, now, do you?” you heard his tease, and your eyes widened. you chuckled, breathless at his statement. “no, no, of course not.” you told him. “i like you a lot more than i do anything..” you mumbled under your breath, your eyes closing to avoid his gaze. “what was that?”
“nothing! nothing.”
at this point, the hangar bay was completely empty. it was the middle of the night, when you thought luke would be fast asleep, but here he was, standing beside you. you took a peek at him, and his eyes caught your gaze.
“say.. y/n. what would you think about.. i don’t know, going on a date with me?”
is he seriously asking me this right now? alright, play it cool.
“that would be.. nice.”
“what planet do you want to go to?”
“luke!”

Title: Faster, Faster WC: 1100
“All that was just an act?” — Richard Castle, Under the Gun (3 x 03)
She never wanted a pony, not for one instant. Her past is devoid of childish crayon drawings of fat bodies on uncertain legs, mane and tail streaming out behind to suggest speed and rushing wind to chase.
And she never wanted to be a princess, though she learned to fake that one at some point. She’d learned the hard way that the lack of fascination with veiled hats shaped like a traffic cone, a dearth of fantasies of being rescued, and no hard-line preference for pink its infinite shades were all liabilities, so after a lonely second grade year, she’d learned to play at it.
She’d sketched her share of turrets with lonely windows. She’d been good at actual horses, less so with the knights meant to ride them. She’d played the game until the boy–girl lines that diverged early wended their way back toward one another.
She was never quite a tom boy, She was definitely never a girly girl, even when she was faking it. And as awkward as the pre-teen years were, for her as much as anyone, they were a relief, too. I like him—that one, she could point and say when what she really liked was his moves on a skateboard, his way with a banged-up bike, his obsession with NASA and all his cool toys. I like that one.
She was never a popular girl, either. Somehow, she wasn’t, even though she was . . . sought after. All the right guys thought she was cute, thought she was cool, thought she might be fun to hang out with.
And she was fun to hang out with. Whether she was in her harsh eyeliner and blunt bangs phase, or pairing Doc Martens with a babydoll slip dress—whatever persona she was trying on or discarding, she had an ease about her. She had the gift of flitting in and out of the groups and subgroups, the trios and quartets and whatevers that constantly split off only to merge again.
She had an ease about her, and from that rose up the urge for a bike. It wasn’t about a boy. It wasn’t even about rebellion, though making the vein in her dad’s left temple do a little dance was definitely a bonus some days. It wasn’t about the pony she had never wanted, whatever fiction she’d invented on the spot to make the vein in Castle’s left temple do a little dance. The bike—the desire for it—was simply a thing unto itself.
That’s a fiction, too. She knows that as she opens up the throttle right now. The bike was a new identity—a new persona, just as invented as any other. In its infancy, it spoke to the constant itch to stand on her absolute tiptoes and stretch beyond the admittedly pleasant confines of her too-little world. Friends fell by the wayside with it—girls, guys who saw it as too absurd a posture, and she was not sad to lose them.
Later, it was continuity. It was evidence that she had once been someone—not a tom boy, not a girly girl, but someone who needed to see the black of asphalt speeding by beneath her. Later it was survival. It was the promise of a mind absolutely blank but for the concentration it took to  wind her way along rutted dirt paths with her shoulders hunched against the wind.
It’s something like that tonight. The promise of a mind absolutely blank, and when she’s too tired for it to be safe anymore—when her thighs burn with the unrelenting effort of keeping the bike balanced beneath her at speed—she looks for the next promise.
It looks like an actual roadhouse. It isn’t of course. The gravitational pull of Brooklyn and all its artifice is too strong. But there are bikes of all kinds leaning out front. There’s no rhyme or reason to them that would suggest any particular artisanal identity she might run afoul of, so she rolls her bike up to a spot a little apart from the rest. She slips the chinstrap of her helmet over the handlebar and wobbles a bit on her weary road legs.
She pushes through the doors and starts working on the calculus of a woman entering a bar alone. There’s a vacant stool on the short side of the L, and at first, a buffer of two to her left and one more just around the bend. She is one whisky into her promise of a blank mind. She is staring at her hands and trying to to eradicate the image, the haptic feedback, the sound of Mike Royce’s own cuffs closing around his wrists.
“Is this seat taken?”
She has the impression of height, dark coloring. By force of habit she catalogs likely vital statistics and enough description for a BOLO.
“No.” She gestures with her mostly empty whisky glass. “And neither is that one or that one.”
He shrugs and takes the stool around the bend. There’s silence and the promise of a blank mind. She shouldn’t drink any more. She won’t, but she can sit here for a good long while, thinking of nothing. Not thinking of Royce or late night treasure hunts—not thinking of the embarrassing ninety seconds of sobbing she did against Castle’s chest as they stood, both of them, knee deep in someone’s grave with jewels at their feet, glinting hard in the moonlight.
“It’s the softail, right?” Her tall, dark caucasian male tries again. “I like to match people to their bikes. Yours is on the end, isn’t it?”
“Why is this your line?” she asks flatly.
“Not a line.” He makes an apologetic gesture. “Sorry to bother you.”
“You’re not a cop, are you?” she asks after something like a decade of silence. She’s thinking of the fat, spindle-legged ponies she never drew. She’s thinking of manes and tails streaming in the wind. She is thinking of something wholly different than the misery before her. A new person, a new cast of characters. “Your name’s not Alexander?”
“Surgeon,” he says, drawing back a little in surprise. It’s satisfying to make him draw back—to make him unsure of himself. It’s satisfying to feel in control, even though she can still feel the roar of the road beneath her feet where they’re braced on the rung of the stool. “Josh.”
“Josh.” She repeats She likes how ordinary the name is. How plain and predictable. She likes all that implies at this moment in her life. “Kate.”
A/N: UGH. This is a Brain!Poneh Mary Sue. IT IS NOT A THING.

Note
for the ask meme, top 5 favorite animes?
5. Cowboy Bebop: Kinda hard to talk about this classic without repeating all the points everyone else has said. It’s a very amazing anime that is able to mix so many different influences into a truly unique thing. I’d say it’s mandatory watching for any anime fan.
4. Garo: The Animation: Honestly, if someone put this on their favorites list for the two OP’s alone, I’d entirely understand. Divine Flame and Bloody brother are the perfect blend of animation and music. The show attached to it is almost as amazing well. You don’t need to have any knowledge of the Garo series to understand what’s happening, I sure didn’t. It just tells a very compelling story about what it means to be a knight, a king, and a protector.
3. Sword Art Online II and Alicization: I don’t have much love for the first season of SAO (Aincrad and Fairy Dance), but once Sinon is introduced the show has a pretty dramatic climb in quality. While quite messy at times, I always feel the passion behind the exchanges all the characters have, and it’s really hit home with me on several occasions. Episode 19 of Alicization is still one of the episode of anime that has left me entirely breathless and crying. I can’t wait for Progressive though, so people can have a better introduction to Aincrad, and it’ll probably be my recommendation for where to start the anime from here on.
2. Kino’s Journey (’03): My favorite character Kino is in it, and they’re someone I find endless intriguing, but I should probably explain the draw of the show instead. The appeal of Kino is that it’s like the Twilight Zone, but instead of a narrator being the connecting force for these vignettes, Kino is. It was one of the first anime to do such a formula that was later taken on by Violet Evergarden and Mushishi, and while I like those, I still think Kino’s Journey is the best at it. While the production values don’t look as impressive as the other two, I think its rougher look conveys a thematically fitting style to the show, one that I still feel fondly for to this day.
1. Madoka Magica: I’ve already gushed super hard about it many times before, so I guess I’ll talk about what makes it unique compared to my other favorites. It’s one of the few anime that motivates me to seek content from it beyond official sources, but actually engage the fan communities around it to see even more. It makes me actively want to see it succeed further, and wish Magica Quartet/Aniplex had made a stronger effort of marketing it in the west. I still think if Kirara Magica had been released her, we might’ve had something to keep fan communities active between Rebellion and MagiReco, so that it didn’t become dormant. I want all the best for Madoka.

Dawn
The prophet sighed , the din of the tavern unable to drown out the visions he had witnessed.
Brown eyes shining in anger, sword raised into the air as blood dried on the man’s armor.
A blonde man pleaded with the townspeople, begging them to join their cause, to save themselves.
Blue eyes glowed as runes were drawn along the walls of the cave. The light faded to reveal the man’s tears.
Grey eyes closed as a breath left his chest. They opened again to stare up at the ancient statue.
He had seen glimpses of the four men he had dreamed of in this almost empty town. The prophet knew he would have to face them eventually.
He would eventually have to send them to their deaths.
The prophet had managed to avoid the quartet, but he knew that couldn’t last forever.
I all came to a head early on a rainy morning. The prophet was caught unaware, forced into a corner by a knight with hair the color of the morning sky. His armor still shone, though the sun hid behind the clouds.
“Who are you?!” He demanded, “Why do you watch me?”
“Why do you care? I am no one,” The prophet croaked with his voice that had long since been damaged. He made a weak attempt to escape the knight’s grasp but failed.
“I’ve seen you watching me, stranger, and my companion. So answer me; Who are you?” The knight demanded.
“I am no one of importance, please, just leave me in peace,” The scarred man begged.
“Roman! Leave the poor fellow alone!” A younger man said, pleading with the knight, pulling at his shoulder, a lute held in his other hand, “Violence isn’t the answer,”
“Leave it be, Patton, he could be dangerous,” The knight, Roman, growled.
“My prince, please, he looks but makes no move to help or harm. Leave him be,”
Another man walked over, clothed in black, a staff in his hand, “I agree with the child,”
“Hey!”
The black clothed man ignored the musician, “He has made no move to harm you, so why do you insist on hurting him? He does not seem to be an a state to do much at all any way,”
The scarred man sighed, leaning his head back into the wall.
“Maybe you should allow your friend here to talk before making such assumptions,” A cloaked man nearby said lightly, the grey eye he could see gleaming with mirth, “We all might find out the reason for his stares,” All four looked back at him, the knight releasing him and taking a step back.
“Well?” The black robed man prompted. The prophet cleared his throat.
“It is a long, long story. We shouldn’t be out in public when I tell it,” The cloaked man smirked.
“Good thing I know a dinky little bar with a bartender who won’t ask questions, eh?” The shadowed man, who still remained nameless, led the other four to a run down building, a shady man standing lazily behind the bar, slurping on some iced coffee thing.
“Virgil, babe! Where have you been?!” He yelled.
“Around,” The hooded man answers with a smirk. He pulled the cloak’s hood off of his head to reveal pale skin and eyes, and dark black hair. “How’s your husband?”
“Emile is great, what can I get you and your friends?” The sun glasses wearing man asked politely.
“Nothing too alcoholic and some privacy,” The hooded man, Virgil, said. The bartender nodded and gestured them over to a table in an abandoned corner of the dingy tavern. Virgil led them over. The five sat, accepting the drinks gratefully.
“So who are you, what’s this about,” Roman demanded, looking at the prophet.
“That, my valiant fellow, is quite a long story. Where to start is the question,” The scarred man pondered.
“Perhaps the beginning, would suffice,” The wizard, who had long since introduced himself as Logan, suggested.
“Perhaps so,” he allowed,”My name is Elijah, and I am oracle for the wicked, self proclaimed queen of this land, though not my choice. I was captured during the rebellion, before which I happily served the Council of Four-”
“But that would make you hundreds of years old?!” Patton exclaimed. Elijah leveled him with a flat look.
“If I may continue?” Elijah asked. The blonde nodded sheepishly. “Thank you. As I was saying, recently, I made my escape from the tyrant’s castle and made my way here,”
The knight, Roman, spoke up,”That doesn’t explain why you were watching us,”
“I am curious to discover that as well,” Logan commented, twisting his staff around next to him. Elijah sighed, looking at the black cloaked man.
“I suppose you all are. Prior to my escape, I had a dream, a prophetic dream. It told of four men, each pure of heart in their own rights, who would be able to take down the kingdom’s oppressor and rule the land in the same spirit as the council did long ago,”
Virgil snorted, “You’ve got the wrong guy, mister, I’m no hero, and I’m certainly not pure of heart,” There was silence around the table, thunder rolled outside. The cloaked man glared at the sky.
The prophet looked at each of them.
Roman, with his gleaming armor and fierce determination.
Patton, with his sunshine smile and kind hand.
Logan, with his sharp wit and aura of power.
And Virgil, with his dark cloak and mysterious appearance.
“I assure you, when I move to bring forth a prophecy, I am never wrong. You four are the heroes this land needs. I will give you time to pack. I expect you all to meet me on the northern side of town at daybreak,” He stood, and with a flourish of his cloak, disappeared into the night. The remaining four sat in silence for a few minutes. Roman then sighed.
“I suppose I will see you all in the morning then?” He asked, standing. Patton smiled.
“Absotibly!” The golden haired man said cheerily as he followed. The mage gave a curt nod as he stood as well.
“I have not made my decision, but I will likely join you,” The four looked at Virgil expectantly.
“How about you, dark and stormy?” Roman asked. The cloaked man scoffed.
“Running to my death? No thank you,” Virgil snarked. The knight, bard, and mage looked down at him. Patton made a sad noise.
“We’ll leave you alone then, kiddo,” The musician said with a sigh, leading the other two away.
As they left, Roman declared loudly, “We’ll be fine without him, we don’t need Mr. Down in the dumps! We can take the Dragon Witch down, just the three of us!” Virgil winced, sighing as he watched them leave.
“That was a little harsh,” The bartender commented, glancing at the cloaked man.
“It’s fine, Remy,” He sighed.
“Are you sure you don’t want to do this? You’ve wanted revenge for so long,” Remy asked.
“I don’t care about revenge anymore, Rem. I don’t want to waste my life on hate,” He slipped his black hood back over his head and stood, “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” Remy nodded, turning back to his cleaning. The cloaked man entered into the darkness of twilight, walking the opposite of the trio who had left earlier.
As he walked through the dark, a glowing apparition appeared, walking next to him. Virgil sighed, stopping, “Hello, my lord,” The apparition scoffed.
“I told you just to call me Thomas,” He said softly with a smile.
“Alright, Thomas, why are you here, why now?” He looked at the deity
“I think you should do it,” He said gently. Virgil groaned. “I’m serious, Virge, you know what I can see. You will find your place among them, I swear to you,”
“I could also find my death,” The cloaked man said pessimistically. Thomas rolled his eyes.
“So will they, if you refuse to go with them,” Virgil winced, “I know what you can do,”
“That was a low blow, my king,” He snarked. The apparition rolled his eyes.
“So will you do it? For me?” He begged.
Virgil rolled his eyes and gave an exasperated sigh, “Fine, but only if that’s what you’re ordering me to do. That way if I die, it’s your fault.” Thomas squaled in joy. The cloaked man flinched away, covering his ears
The apparition winced in sympathy, “I’m sorry. Take care of yourself, okay?”
Virgil nodded, “Say hi to the others for me, okay?” And then Thomas was gone. The cloaked man sighed, trudging back to his room.
And the night was silent and still.

(The) Lesser Men announce new album with an omnibus music video
References, Reflections: Revelations is the new album by the Croatian scarf-rock quartet (The) Lesser Men. The band introduces it with a pioneering project - first-of-its-kind omnibus music video for the song Trilogy, a duet with Irena Žilić.
'The song is a triptych and it’s naturally suited for a three-piece video. It perfectly represents the sole intention of the album - to fathom out the origins of what we consider and have always perceived to be - our music.'
Opening part, Knights, directed by Lame Oh, sets the story of uniting and disintegrating that, after almost dissolving mid-way through (adapted extract from a short film by Ben Benko Rebellion Trap), gets built again in black&white animated world of Angels, elegantly portrayed by Dario Pustaj.

Yesterday I finally finished the first draft of KQR’s Episode 1 script! :D To be honest, it’s still pretty rough, but there are some good lines in there, some of which I illustrated above. ^^
So far, everyone has a fairly clear personality except for MK, which is upsetting because 1) he’s supposed to be the main character, and 2) I usually don’t have trouble writing him??? o_0 I dunno, maybe it’s just ‘cause I haven’t done it in a while...
I think I just need to keep going, see how the whole story turns out, and he’ll get better. Very excited to continue working on this concept in the background~

heya!! do you mind if i ask a bit abt ur kyokoswap au?? if u dont wanna thats fine but any info/hcs u have abt it wld be cool bc the au seems rlly neat!! tho again if u dont wanna def no pressure ^^; have a wonderful day!! :D
Tumblr media
VIBRATES EXCITEDLY i’ve been waiting 50 years for someone to ask about this!!!!!kyoko magica is one my oldest and most developed aus, i’m more than happy to answer this!
aside from minor adjustments to better fit each character’s arc, the story itself follows canon’s exactly! starts with kyoko having a dream about mami, ends with mami tearing apart kyokami in a new world. ofc a lot of the girls’ original traits remain in tact. kyoko is more like her pre-tds self, kind but ditzy and reckless, mami retains her ladylike grace, homura her overprotectiveness and so on…i always prefer leaving aspects that makes characters…themselves in swap aus if u get me? or maybe that’s just me
KYOKO
swaps with madoka. madokyoko or kyokami, as i like to call her!
a simple christian girl with a plain, ordinary life. kyoko had everything she could ever ask for: a loving family, supportive friends, amazing teachers- just everything! all of that changed when she meets a mysterious blonde girl in a post-apocalyptic setting in a dream…and that very same girl appears in her life the very next day!
while she has a kind heart, she is known to be fiery and unreasonable at times. this temper was usually displayed in heated confrontations with mami
the sakuras used to be rather poor. their financial status improved when the akemis stepped in to assist them, and the two families had forged a close bond ever since
eating is practically her hobby. still hates wasting food and will call out anyone who does so
is a d@ddy’s girl through and through. her father is wise and caring, so she often seeks him out for advice
her wish varies from time to time. in the first timeline she wished to save a cat she named Amy, while others had to do with wishing one or all of her friends back or to be able to defeat walpurgisnacht etc. her final wish was to erase all witches from the past, present and future with her own hands, which caused her to ascend to godhood and leave no trace of her existence in the new world.
kyokami felt lonely when she first realized she had no way to get in touch with her loved ones on earth. it felt even strange to be god herself…she’d always been a girl of faith yknow? she eventually embraced her fate as the composer of the universe, and is perfectly happy in bring salvation to magical girls all over the globe.
ophelia is the witch of abandonment. unlike gretchen, who desires to save the world, ophelia wants to destroy it. kyoko’s faith in humanity died the second ophelia was born…and the all-powerful wudan witch stops at nothing until this cold and cruel world is nothing more than barren wasteland
MAMI
switches with homura! her nickname is homumami, but she’s usually mamicifer to me
i like to call her moemami (or moemi???) in her ‘moe’ phase
was orphaned at the age of 6 when a fatal car crash killed her parents and left her paralyzed from waist down. the hospital had practically been her home since, until she was officially discharged yeaaaaars later
used to wear her hair in drilled pigtails, complete with colorful flower clips that surprisingly correspond to her future friends’ colors. in later timelines she would let her hair down and replace the childish clips with her signature bronze ones.
used to be wheelchair bound before contracting. learned to utilize her healing powers so she could walk again; she used crutches and ribbons to assist her during the early timelines. in later timelines, she fully healed her injured spine the same time she changed her personality
she had a big crush on sayaka in the past…something she’d rather forget. it still flusters her
her wish ofc was to redo her meeting with kyoko sakura
her birthday falls on may 1st. more abt it here
mami has a major sweet tooth.
candeloro is a miserable witch, literally shackled with chains of despair, forever alone in this nightmarish prison- her eternal pity party. although she comes off as aloof at first, her true nature warm and inviting, almost needy even.
she has her own set of ‘clara dolls,’ known as delightful dolls. there’s four of them, each resembling the girls of the quartet but represent the hostess’/mami’s worst aspects: vexation (kyoko), disgust (madoka), cruelty (sayaka) and love (homura)– the youngest doll is the least favorite and looks suspiciously a lot like the good-for-nothing’s dolls (see sayamura for the answer)
HOMURA
switches with sayaka. i lovingly dub her sayamura
was kyoko’s friend from childhood. they attended the same catholic elementary school together before mitakihara middle school.
sported her ‘moe’ appearance pre-contract. after making her wish, she ditched the braids and glasses in order to look ‘cooler’ (@ which kyoko wld say she always looked cool in her eyes
kyoko had been her knight in shining armor for as long as she could remember, and homura really wants to repay that by protecting her as well! she is also hella gay for her bff
her wish was to have the strength to protect others
her shield is very similar to the one seen in the original madoka manga, though it lacks the hammerspace storage. her firearms are formed via magic
her desire for kyoko, self loathing and jealousy are big big factors to her inevitable demise.
homulilly here is a mix of her nutcracker and mortal world forms. each and every one of the clara dolls still exist along with lotte, luiselotte, liese and lillia.
love is in fact, one of homura’s dolls; because homura and mami cherish the same person deeply, their feelings intertwined and therefore ‘share’ ai. post-rebellion, ai continues to pose as one of the delightful dolls and attempts to revive homura’s memories behind mamicifer’s back
SAYAKA
switches with mami. her nickname is mamisayaka here!
ghost and lonely are big inspos, esp for oktavia
came from a rather well off family, so she never really needed to worry about provisions when she was left on her own. still, all the money in the world could never fill the gaping hole in her lonely heart
knows how to play the violin
her parents and kyousuke and hitomi all perished when a theater collapsed on itself. old wounds reopened when madoka left her to live life her own way
is the ideal big sis! cheerful, sporty and has good grades…For A Sayaka. beneath the facade she’s a depressed slob who doesnt take care of herself as much as she should. its oke as long as she hides it all with a smile :)
oktavia von seckendorff is very highkey based off lewis msa; deadbeat-esque familiars, an abandoned mansion/concert hall labyrinth and a disembodied glass heart, which sits at the very bottom of her lagoon- that kind stuff. those she falls in love with, whether romantically or platonically, are never to leave her- she wont be alone, never again. one condition must be fulfilled in order to kill her successfully: stay. if she’s truly feels content, she will accept death without fail.
MADOKA
swaps with kyoko. kyodoka has a nice ring, doesnt it?
used to be exactly like the sweet and well-meaning canon!madoka in the past, a key difference was she would resort to stealing and breaking other rules to keep herself and her parents and little brother alive.
her mother was a businesswoman who wanted to take a more innovative approach to her work. alas, this would cost junko her entire career and the kaname family became penniless
madoka wished for her mother’s dream project to become reality. just as ur familiar with canon!kyoko’s story, it backfired horribly. disowned from her family, her mother became an alcoholic, dad gets pushed around and baby tatsuya doesnt understand whats going on. days later…press f for the kanames and madoka’s broken heart.
is vile, absolutely vile. can be sweet in one moment then violent and emotionally manipulative in the next like the two-faced bitch she is
rarely uses honorifics to address people anymore, unless she’s playing sweet to get something out of someone. uses ‘-chan/kun/san’ for those she sincerely cares for; she didn’t call homura ‘-chan’ before she began sympathizing with the latter
has a minor problem with booze and tobacco, namely the latter.
she loves loves loves melons!
knowing the value of being frugal, madoka hates wasting things that could be put to better use. she can be kind of a cheapskate in some sense, though she's sane enough to avoid resorting to ridiculous extremities.
kriemhild gretchen is exact the opposite of canon!ophelia. this towering witch continues oh so obsessively reaching for what she cannot; that one faraway glimmer of hope sitting at the endless skies of her labyrinth she calls paradise. shes stubborn as all hell, and will not let herself be destroyed UNLESS one convinces her the world is already a happy place in no need of saving
NAGISA
nagisa is nagisa.
the same charlotte that ate mamisayaka’s head is now a bapy that lives with her post-rebellion
her wish remains the same: to have one last cheesecake with her mother
not much to say here
thats all i can remember from the top of my head! if you want me to elaborate further, pls ask me @mahoutrauma!!

Man of Steel: Warner Wanted This Hilarious Change
https://ift.tt/3BCU46W
Man of Steel may remain widely divisive nearly a decade after its 2013 release, but the pedigree of its storytellers, The Dark Knight Trilogy’s David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan, is often obscured by the sizable shadow cast by director Zack Snyder. However, for studio Warner Bros., the Henry Cavill-headlined Superman reboot’s primary purpose was to launch the Marvel-like continuity we now know as the DC Extended Universe. Consequently, with such high stakes, work on the film regularly came with suggestions via studio notes. Yet, Goyer’s recollection of one particular note is not only funny, but will make you wonder if anyone’s paying attention.
Goyer, having come through for Warner as the writer of director Nolan’s supremely successful, Oscar-winning Batman efforts, had the material knowledge and gravitas for the job, and was thusly tapped to write the Man of Steel screenplay, with Nolan’s name touted as a story developer. However, that didn’t stop Warner personnel from offering suggestions for the sake of suggestions. Yet, one would think that providing feedback for this crucial Superman endeavor would, in the very least, necessitate knowing that Krypton was destroyed, especially since that galactic calamity played out in elaborately-explosive form in the very footage the studios suits were shown. Oddly enough, as the screenwriter recounts in a broad-topic THR interview, such a prerequisite was apparently not implemented.
“One note I got was on Man of Steel, where the ending involves Superman utilizing the pod that he arrived in as a child in order to bring down General Zod’s ship,” recalls Goyer. “The note we got from the studio said, ‘You have to change that.’ We asked why. They said, ‘Because if Superman uses that pod and it’s destroyed while saving the city, how is he ever going to get back home to Krypton?’ There was just this long pause and we said, ‘Krypton blew up. You saw 30 minutes of it!’
Perhaps putting the franchise cart before the immediate plot horse, someone—maybe a group of people—at Warner thought that the destruction of the ship used by Phantom Zone-escaped villain General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his Kryptonian criminal cohorts wasted a potential opportunity for future film exploits in which Superman buckles in and discovers his roots on the planet from which he was jettisoned as an infant. However, the aftermath of Man of Steel’s flashback first act—having followed Superman’s father, Jor-El (Russell Crowe), in his resistance to Zod’s militant rebellion, and the bureaucracy’s failed effort to save the powder keg planet—left Krypton as broken clumps of dirt destined to drift in space for eons. Zod, of course, was using said ship in his attempt to terraform Earth into a new version of Krypton (a reboot of Krypton, if you will,) thereby killing everyone on the planet in the process. However, while Superman’s climactic choice—under extreme duress—to kill Zod became widely controversial, early watchers at Warner, by contrast, lamented the killing of his ship, which could have facilitated a trip (via the sacrificed pod or the ship,) to the aforementioned clumps of dirt in space for an unspecified sequel.
Warner Bros.
Fun aside, the clear fail moment depicted in Goyer’s anecdote could simply be chalked up as an understandable example of someone at the studio having an off moment—a brain fart, if you will. Moreover, it’s not even the dumbest note the writer ever received, since he previously recalled one for his never-realized pre-MCU Doctor Strange script for Columbia Pictures, in which a clearly-clueless studio suit told him to “take a lot of the magic out.” Indeed, the pressure to perform from the top-down at Warner’s corporate hierarchy was likely enormous, creating a far-seeing mindset focused on the broader franchise; a mindset that ironically hides glaring concepts already in front of one’s face, like, say, Snyder’s lengthy destruction of Krypton sequence. This is especially the case as they were starting to see the fortunes of direct competitors Marvel Studios exponentially increase year after year.

From Man of Steel to Zack Snyder’s Justice League: A Complete DCEU Timeline
By Aaron Sagers
Thusly, Man of Steel was never going to be anything less than an ambitiously redefining effort. After all, the reboot was released just seven short years after director Bryan Singer’s Brandon Routh-starring big screen reboot, 2006’s Superman Returns, and, not for nothing, arrived a mere two years after the last small screen Superman, Tom Welling, wrapped up a decade-long run with the 2011 end of Smallville. Indeed, along with the enduring iconic specter of the Christopher Reeve quartet, there was already no shortage of live-action Superman material in the ether at the time, which meant that this new movie had to be something extraordinarily special in order to convince understandably-cynical audiences, yet again, that a man can fly. Of course, arguments about whether or not Man of Steel was an artistic success remain ongoing, especially after the film’s $668 million global box office numbers—while impressive by normal standards—didn’t quite create an uprising powerful enough to match Mighty Marvel’s reliably lucrative world-building.
Tellingly, Snyder’s subsequent DCEU effort wouldn’t be a direct sequel, but instead became a crossover, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which ended up introducing the name stardom of Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader for a bleak battle of heroes over vigilante philosophy and apocalyptic dreams. While grosses improved to $873 million for that film, its return on investment didn’t measure up, cementing Warner’s behind-the-scenes loss of confidence in Snyder’s vision, which, coupled with a personal tragedy, led to his exit from ultimately-under-performing 2017 mega-movie Justice League; an exit somewhat rectified by his lengthy redux, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, released earlier this year. However, the DCEU remains in a continuity flux, with more imminent sequels for familiar characters like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Shazam and a solo debut for The Flash, along with cold-intro spinoff Black Adam and, notably, continuity-disconnected Earth-2-set reboot The Batman—and that’s not even addressing the nebulousness of its television side on HBO Max and The CW.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
…Come to think of it, maybe Superman could have gotten away with that trip to a non-existent Krypton.

Princess Connect! Re:Dive – S2 02 – Smiles and Shadows
Tumblr media
Last week showed off Priconne’s impressive aural, visual, and comic chops when it comes to epic fantasy adventure, along with the sweet, lived-in chemistry of the main quartet. But I count myself among the many who were surprised without strong its dramatic chops could be. Last week we only got a slight glimpse of that as Pecorine looked at the palace where she should rightfully rule.
But this week is all about Karyl and her unique position in the Gourmet Guild as a spy and “princess knight” with divided loyalties. Her small act of rebellion against her majesty is forgiven, but with that clemency comes the threat that it better not happen again. And so just like last season, Karyl is torn between her love of her guild-mates and doing her royal duty.
Tumblr media
Speaking of royals, Pecorine’s longing look at the palace is followed up upon this week when Kokkoro mentions that Peco still hasn’t told Karyl or Yuuki about her true identity. While she can’t do anything about Kokkoro knowing, she’s not ready to tell the others.
Peco asks Kokkoro to keep the secret a little while longer so she can tell them herself when the time is right. For now, as long as she’s able to keep the people of Landosol safe and smiles on their faces, she’s mostly content to maintain the status quo.
Tumblr media
Both Peco and Karyl’s internal strife is briefly soothed by a visit to the clothing store owned by Carmina, a three-member idol group that sings, dances, and fights to put smiles on the faces of their fans. Their goals are thus aligned with Pecorine’s and the Gourmet Guilds.
This act introduces Tsumugi, Nozomi, and Chika, and also provides an opportunity to dress everyone (including Yuuki) like cute idols. To the show’s credit, however, our Gourmet Guilders’s idol cosplay doesn’t extend to actually taking the stage; that’s left to the professional performers.
Tumblr media
When everyone is getting a good night’s sleep before Carmina’s next big concert (Yuuki having been warmly initiated as an official member of the Carmina Fan Club), Karyl slips out on her own as she tends to do. In the palace she meets Christina, who relays to her a mission for the two of them involving Shadows.
Before heading home, Karyl sits on a vantage point offering a gorgeous nighttime vista of the city…including the outdoor concert venue, where Karyl finds Tsumugi rehearsing on her own. When asks why she’s up so late without the others, Tsumugi says she doesn’t have the natural talent of Nozomi or Chika, but still wants to help them shine, hence the outfits and extra practice.
Tumblr media
The big day of the concert arrives, and Karyl heads off on her own, telling the others she has something she needs to do. That something turns out to be fighting off all of the stray Shadows in the nearby woods that Carmina’s performances (and the crowds they bring) seem to lure out of their hiding spots.
There’s a contrast between Karyl and Christina’s “dirty work” in and with the shadows while Carmina shines brighter than ever on stage and make everyone who showed up to the concert smile. While the crowds are CGI, the three idols are smoothly animated in 2D; it’s a very nice-looking concert.
Tumblr media
After her shadow-hunting duties are complete, Karyl is so physically and emotionally drained, she’s ready to pass out under a bridge in the dark. But her three guildmates, feeling it not proper to start dinner without their fourth member, head back into town to look for her, calling her name until she finally emerges.
Karyl tells the others their calling her name embarrassing her, but you can see in her wonderfully subtle facial expressions that she was also extremely happy they came out looking for her. It might mean there are no easy answers for her
Karyl’s problems aren’t solved this week, nor should they have been. I’m hoping that sometime before this season ends she’ll be able to pick a side and find happiness and peace—and hopefully it’s the Gourmet Guild’s side—but that’s far from certain right now. Even so, all Priconne, Peco, and Karyl can do is take things one day, and one family meal, at a time.
Tumblr media
P.S. The OP is back, and the same theme song is used as last season…which is just fine with me! If it ain’t broke…Having recently watched Twin Peaks: The Return, I’m struck by how similar Yuuki is to Coop-as-Dougie Jones…The new ED is a stunningly beautiful sequence of Kokkoro staying up late looking at photos from the guild album, followed by Peco and Karyl putting a blanket over her when she nods off, then Yuuki putting a blanket on all three of them. So simple, and yet so full of heart-bursting love…
