Ricky Martin - La Bomba 1998
Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Ricky Martin began his musical career at twelve as a member of Puerto Rican boyband Menudo. His solo career started in 1991, and his third album, A Medio Vivir (1995), helped him rise to prominence in European countries.
"La Bomba" was the third single from his fourth studio album, Vuelve (1998). The album earned Martin his first Grammy Award. The song's title, which translates to "the Bomb" in English, is derived from the Afro-Puerto Rican dance music of the same name. Lyrically, it is a metaphor in which Martin compares the bomba music "to a drink that makes you drunk; the listener is high from the rhythm of the dance".
"La Bomba" is one of Martin's most commercially successful songs in his career. It was a top-five hit in Central American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. The song peaked at number 27 on the US Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart while in the same week, the song peaked at numbers 11 and 13 on Billboard's Latin Pop Songs and Tropical/Salsa charts, respectively. In Spain, it reached number five, giving Martin his second top-five hit in the country, following his 1998 chart-topper hit, "La Copa de la Vida". "La Bomba" also peaked in the top 40 of several non Spanish-speaking countries, such as Australia and Sweden. It won the award for Best Danceable Tune at the 1999 Premios Eres.
"La Bomba" received a total of 85,3% yes votes!

the batfam's fave music genres:
Dick: pop girlie through and through - big abba fan, loves britney and tswift, seeing yoncé live is the best thing that ever happened to him
Jason: musical theatre nerd - he looooves newsies so much, used to dream abt being a broadway star; occasionally dabbles in folk music and leftist protest songs (he knows the lyrics to both Solidarity Forever and The Internationale)
Tim: 2000s emo/pop punk guy - loves mcr and green day, simple plan for when he's feeling particularly angsty, nirvana when he's angry at the world
Steph: extremely eclectic tastes, her fave playlist goes from skrillex to taylor swift to cardi b to disney to daft punk to tupac to
Damian: big k-pop fan - loves bts (but would never admit it ever) - but mainly listens to arabic rock
Duke: he's a boyband guy through and through - nsync, backstreet boys, one direction, jonas brothers - if they're a group of men making silly pop songs, he's into it EDIT: have been informed that duke canonically likes heavy metal that critiques the american prison/judicial system (which is so fucking cool)
Cass: heavy metal, death metal, gothic metal - her favourite band is Nightwish
Bruce: he likes 'old' music - frank sinatra, billie holliday, the andrews sisters, johnny cash - and, somewhat incongruously, Marina Diamandis
Others:
Babs: she loves opera and has a particular fondness for prokofiev and wagner (inherited from her dad, they used to go to the Gotham Opera together)
Selina: latin pop - gloria estefan, enrique iglesias, ricky martin, selena - as well as reggaeton and salsa (she loves to take bruce salsa dancing bc he's a pretty good dancer and can throw her around a bit)
Clark: he loves country music - johnny cash, dolly parton (he met her as superman and got her autograph), shania twain, orville peck - but he mainly listens to podcasts bc he's a nerd (affectionate)
Talia: like damian, she enjoys arabic rock but also arabic folk music, bollywood music, and frank sinatra (like selina, she likes to take bruce dancing except it's swing dance instead of salsa)

Tomorrow X Together drop epic music video for ‘Chasing That Feeling’
Tumblr media
The track is taken from the boyband’s new album, ‘The Name Chapter: FREEFALL’
Tomorrow X Together have returned with their new album ‘The Name Chapter: FREEFALL’ and dropped the epic music video for its lead single, ‘Chasing That Feeling’.
‘The Name Chapter: FREEFALL’ marks the five-piece boyband’s third studio album and follows the release of the ‘The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION’ in January.
The video for ‘Chasing That Feeling’ finds Tomorrow X Together in a film set designed to look like the streets of New York. The members each take different routes, but all follow their own ball of flaming light until they reunite. As they do so, the cityscape around them twists and contorts, adding new layers of intrigue to the video.
“My fate, come and kiss me / I just keep on chasing that feeling,” they sing on the chorus. “Though I’m marred, leave me / I just keep on chasing / Chasing that feeling.”
youtube
Alongside ‘Chasing That Feeling’, ‘The Name Chapter: FREEFALL’ also includes the group’s recent singles ‘Back For More’ and ‘Do It Like That’. The former featured Latin-pop star Anitta, while the latter saw the boyband team up with The Jonas Brothers.
Speaking to NME about their new album, Tomorrow X Together reflected on their experiences with fame. “It is reality, but I don’t think it has a negative connotation,” Beomgyu said, adding that, rather than seeing that side of their careers as a “free fall”, they have “become more greedy about bringing [our fans] better music”.
Around the release of ‘Do It Like That’, TXT teamed with Manchester City FC on Roblox. The group shared footage of them meeting the team’s Kevin De Bruyne and discussing their roots with him.
The player was also surprised to hear that the members had been together for seven years – including their trainee days – responding “Already?’ and later telling them to “keep doing what you’re doing. You’re amazing.”

Billboard USA Exclusion Zone Episode 17 (06/24/2023)
Sorry for posting this late because this girl just graduated! Yes everyone now this is my full time job now /j. No but seriously this week had been a roller coaster and interesting. Certainly more interesting than our new entries here.
-----------------------------------------------------
1. "Take Two" by BTS
Seems like BTS is out of their hiatus? Anyways what I found most interesting about this song isn't the song itself, but where it debuted. In both global charts this song debuted at #1 meanwhile on the Hot 100 proper, it only debuted at #48. I think the whole top ten of even the Global 200 that included US numbers suggested that maybe America isn't really trusted anymore for worldwide smash hits or that other countries showed up to have bigger impact that a lot of people realized.
32. "Who Told You" by J Hus ft. Drake
With the rise of afrobeat, I was wondering about what's the early proginator of the genre are cooking up and capitalizing on the success of afrobeat. Well we have a cool and chill afrobeat song from J Hus with a surprisingly decent Drake verse (thank god he didn't do any accent here).
74. "Polaris" by Saiko, Feid & Quevedo ft. Mora
Something is happening in latin music scene and I'm excited for it. This song is one of the reasons as to why because the mix between reggaeton and drum & bass is so seemless. I hope this gets big stateside because man we need more of these.
102. "Grain of Sand" by Lim Young Woong
You know how in Japan, pop and rnb ballads are still big with artists like Back Number and Yuuri scoring multiple hits? Well seems like we have a K-Pop ballad and I'm plesantly surprised at how well produced this song is. Lim has such a great voice and perfect for this guitar driven ballad. Even the whistle isn't bad here. Highly recommended.
103. "Tuya" by Rosalia
I don't know what to make of this song. On one hand it's nice to hear more Rosalia material and even after Motomami she can make some catchy reggaeton song. But just like LLYLM, the song itself felt hollow and kinda checked out? I don't know but this song felt less vibrant than most if not all the songs on Motomami. We'll see what happened next though because I do love the ending portion of the song.
175. "Let Me In" by EXO
I...have never been a fan of EXO. That's partially due to when they were popular I was falling out of love for K-Pop since most of its bigger bands like Super Junior and Shinee were doing conscriptions. I do think EXO was supposed to be THE boyband than would crossover into the USA before BTS did. But the mismanagement and just Kris Wu in general really doesn't helped. But hey they have a new singles out and this is definitely a more subdued RnB comeback that I actually kinda like.
194. "Padam Padam" by Kylie Minogue
I think we need more retrospective deep dive into Kylie Minogue career because she's lowkey still churning out hits after hits even though she's less popular than Madonna. This song is no exception like holy crap she can adapt to the deep house trend that we are in right now. This song does give me clear skin thank you very much queer ally Kylie Minogue.
195. "Lover" by Taylor Swift
One of my favorite moments of 2023 is Swifties memeing Cruel Summer into an actual singles even if Midnights still have its own singles run with Karma.
I highly recommend everyone to listen to these songs

https://at.tumblr.com/stylesunchained/i-really-dont-think-he-believed-hed-get-that/ibm6jlmwe53c I thought it was was between Beyonce, Bad Bunny, or Harry, for several different reasons. But if we had to go off which album broke the fandom bubble, you're right. Beyonce's Renaissance was a great album but it just didn't have as big of an impact outside of BeyHive, at least not this time around. Bad Bunny was very close competition for Harry because on a broader scale, he brought Urban Latin Music, Caribbean music, into mainstream media, and so quickly at it too. Harry though? He really tore barrier this UP year, his fame just fucking skyrocketed from HH, to his movie deals, to his insanely long LOT. Harry's worked his ass off all this time, to see people on twitter say he came no where close between Bey and Benito is just ignorant as hell. They all deserve their awards, but only one can win AOTY and I'm proud that it was Harry.
It’s all about perspective. There’s people saying she did break the bubble but not really. In Benito’s case, for example, he never really took off here in Brazil. But it was unanimous to the academy that Harry’s House broke through the glass roof and reached a new audience and made an impact in pop culture throughout the past few months. It’s not that difficult to see the reasoning of it all, people just don’t want to lol
Unfortunately, the fact he came from a boyband and is going against big and beloved names in the industry will always work against him. And the hive wanted Bey to get that award to “compensate” for other years she didn’t win for better albums, like Lemonade. At the end of the day, whoever won it that wasn’t her was damned either way.

Valorant Agent Headcanons - Favourite Music Genres
A/N: I decided to do some headcanons ‘cause why not? Here are what I think the Valorant agents would listen to music-wise. I won’t get specific with artists- just genres. It’s gonna be simple and to the point.
Also, I headcanon that each agent (except KAY/O and Omen) listen to a lot of music from their respective home country. So, that part will go without saying too.
Hope you like it!
Word count: 201
No warnings.
Astra: Instrumental piano music; think elevator music. Also listens to meditating music too.
Breach: Hard rock and metal. Secretly listens to pop boybands when no one is around.
Brimstone: Classic rock, but also likes metal if he’s in the mood.
Chamber: Classical music, but also enjoys opera.
Cypher: Rarely listens to music; prefers to work in silence or with others if need be.
Fade: Heavy metal; the harder, the better.
Jett: K-pop, but also indulges in regular pop music too.
KAY/O: Doesn’t listen to music; it disrupts his system.
Killjoy: Lofi music, especially while she works away.
Neon: Pop and rock music, as well as pop/rock.
Omen: Instrumental classical music whenever he needs to block out his thoughts.
Phoenix: R&B and hip-hop, especially while training or working out. Secretly likes pop music from female pop singers.
Raze: Hip-hop Latin music.
Reyna: Latin music especially, but also likes American rock thanks to Brimstone.
Sage: Instrumental music; anything goes.
Skye: Country, but also likes country/rock and country/pop.
Sova: Rarely listens to music, but will listen to classic music from time to time.
Viper: Classic rock music; used to not really care about music, but Brimstone influenced her.
Yoru: Hip-hop, rock, and rap rock.

Does the hot dentist know Latin? Because he’s a DENTIST?
Also Heartstopper boyband AU??? Did I know about this one because yes please!!!
I want it on record that I started this au way before Noah played a dentist who knows some Latin! I predicted it just like I predicted Kit and Joe having glitter on their faces (spoilers!).
“Where’s Dr. Brewer? Dr. Patrick?” He adopted a faux-posh accent, “Dr. Patrick Brewer, handsome dentist.” A sweet little giggled escaped at that.
“He’s back at his office.”
“What? Why? Why isn’t he here with me?” David sounded sad, and Stevie gave a quick glance to her right to see a massive pout on his face. “Patrick? Dr. Patrick?” He was looking all around the car, presumably in search of his absent dentist.
Lol, so the Heartstopper boyband au idea popped into my head this past week, and I immediately messaged @dessertwaffles for obvious reasons. Words didn’t exist for it until last night…
On its face, [BAND NAME] opening for Heartstopper didn’t make a lot of sense. While [BAND NAME] prided itself on having an indie pop vibe, Heartstopper was one of the most popular boybands in history.
But Nick Nelson, the breakout star and heartthrob of Heartstopper, had seen [BAND NAME] perform at a club in London and had fallen in love with their music. And their drummer.
(If anyone has any band name suggestions, send ‘em my way! Our top contender right now is Something About Leaves.)
I have a lot of WIPs so ask me about them!

New Hope Club
Joining the New Hope Club
By Kayla Marra
New Hope Club is a British boyband consisting of George Smith, Reece Bibby, and Blake Richardson. The boys came together in 2015 after viewing each other’s popular covers of songs on YouTube. While the guys still do covers from time to time, they also have music of their own. In 2017, New Hope Club’s debut EP “Welcome to the Club” was released, followed by their debut album in 2020, and now their newest singles “Getting Better” and “Girl Who Does Both” in 2022 from their upcoming studio album.
The boys began their Getting Better Tour in 2022 starting in the UK, then going on to perform in cities all over the US, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Europe.
We were lucky enough to sit down with the boys prior to playing their first show of the US leg of the tour in Philadelphia to discuss upcoming music, their musical influences, and even Philly cheesesteaks!
How did you guys come together as a group?
George Smith: We were all individually posting covers on YouTube. It’s a little up and coming app. (Laughs) But yeah, we were just posting covers individually and we found each other online. I met Blake when he was fourteen, and then we met Reece a couple of months later. It was just so important for us to get on as best friends, and obviously, we still are the bestest friends. I’d say we’ve gotten even closer over the last two years.
Reece Bibby: One hundred percent! If we hadn’t gotten closer over five years, I’d be worried! (All laugh.)
George Smith: I meant over the last two years!
Blake Richardson: We’re getting closer every day.
Tumblr media
Congratulations on the release of “Getting Better” as well as “Girl Who Does Both”! Could you walk us through your writing process?
George Smith: “Girl Who Does Both” was written over the pandemic. We wrote it with our friends Ross Golan and Jackson. We wrote that one at my house. It’s almost a love letter. You can go listen to the lyrics if you want. When we wrote the song, we came up with almost like a Strokes vibe for it, originally. We let it sit there for a couple of months and then we revisited it. We always loved the song, we love the lyrics in the song, and we wanted to strip it back and let the lyric breathe. We actually went back in when we were in LA. We decided to strip it back almost a Simon and Garfunkel vibe.
Blake Richardson: Let’s talk about “Getting Better.” “Getting Better” came near the end of the writing process for this album. To be honest, it just came out. We were so proud of the journey that we’d been on to that point of really finding ourselves and writing all these songs. The label was happy with them, and we loved them. It was such an amazing time. We were just coming out of COVID, so this song “Getting Better” just fell out in like twenty minutes. It really sets the scene for the whole album and [shares] the message that we’re trying to put out to everyone.
Tumblr media
I bet it was a drastic change to go from being able to play shows to none at all. How would you say the last three years have impacted and/or grown your songwriting?
Reece Bibby: Obviously, it’s been such a weird time for everyone, especially in the music business since it shut down completely, like a lot of industries. For us, it’s hard looking back on it because there was so much negativity because we couldn’t tour the album that we just released. We came off of the back of that album so excited. We got top five in our home country.
Congratulations!
Reece Bibby: Thank you! We’re so proud, but then we couldn’t embark on a tour. We can’t even do all the things that we want to do and all the benefits of releasing an album. It was weird but to be fair, we took a lot of positives out of it. I think looking back on it we now see it as a positive time, as weird as that is. We never really had the time to sit down and look back on all the things we’ve done and really evaluate what we’ve done over the last five years.
Blake Richardson: It was a weird time, and we wrote a great album!
Tumblr media
Who would you say are your biggest songwriting influences, and have they changed over time, or stayed the same throughout the years?
Blake Richardson: I mean, The Beatles are definitely by far number one. I think they always will. I can’t see it ever changing.
Reece Bibby: We write this album with a lovely man called Ross Golan, and he has honestly inspired us so much. He’s one of the best writers around right now. He’s been a mentor to us over these last couple of years. We didn’t meet him until lockdown stuff was over, but we pretty much spent every day on Zoom with him, getting to know him. We’ve been through so much together over these last couple of years writing the album and growing as people and as artists. Yeah, he’s got to be one of our number one inspirations now, for sure.
Blake Richardson: He definitely would look at the situation and want to put in a hundred percent. As much as we wanted it to be great, he did too. It was a dream team. I love that man.
George Smith: He gave us confidence as well. He basically mentored us and helped us push as we can go.
Tumblr media
That’s great to have someone on the same wavelength and have the same vision. You guys post lots of covers on your social medias, what are each of your favorite songs to cover?
Reece Bibby: We cover so much. We usually cover a Beatles song when we perform live.
Blake Richardson: I like the ones where they end up not sounding like the original because sometimes it’s impossible. But sometimes we nail a cover and we’re like “You know, that could be better than the original!” That always feels good. I’m not saying that any song we’ve covered is better than the original!
I’m sure all of the people you’ve covered before have had a moment like this, what would you each say your “I made it” moment was?
Reece Bibby: For us, every time we can do something like this is unbelievable. We’re from very small towns in England and to be able to travel the world release albums, shoot music videos, do shows, and meet fans, it’s just crazy for us. We're reaching corners of the world that we never thought we’d even visit, never mind play and do it as a job. It’s just amazing for us and every step we take every week gets better. We’re growing and enjoying it along the way which is the most important thing. I wouldn’t say we’ve had one “I made it” moment, we’re just enjoying it.
Blake Richardson: I would say that we’ve had “pinch me” moments.
Tumblr media
What was your biggest “pinch me” moment?
George Smith: I’d say getting top five in the UK. That was crazy, the fact that people actually like our music.
Reece Bibby: There are a few shows that we’ve done where halfway through the set I’ll be like “Wow, this is wild.”
Blake Richardson: The Amsterdam show was mental. We played two songs back-to-back and then we stopped. The fans screamed, and they kept screaming. It was genuinely three minutes, and we broke the decibel record.
Reece Bibby: In UK venues, I don’t know why there’s a little decibel censor.
Blake Richardson: To test how loud it gets.
All: And we broke it!
George Smith: And that wasn’t us either, it was the fans. We weren’t just yelling into the microphone. (Laughs)
Tumblr media
What can you tell us about any new music coming up? What is the vibe of your new tracks?
Reece Bibby: I don’t think we’ve ever released music like we’re about to release. We wrote and released the first album when we were quite young. We wrote it over the five years when we were new to the industry, new to touring, and new to everything. We're still growing up. This is the first project we've really been able to sit down and plan out everything from the artwork, and every song is written by us, and production, every music video, and everything else! The whole album is done by us so it's just exciting. Everything means a little bit more because we've done it ourselves. For us, it's like a whole new era, so if you're going to listen to any New Hope Club I would listen to the new stuff for sure.
Tonight is the first night of the “Getting Better” Tour, how does it feel to be back performing in front of live audiences again?
George Smith: We’ve obviously missed it so much. It’s been a little while. We did a couple of shows in the UK last year, but to come back to the US… and as Reece said, we’re obviously not from here, we’re from tiny little towns. To come all the way here and have this amount of people show up and sing along to songs that we wrote in our bedrooms, and even the new ones.
Reece Bibby: We just hope anyone shows up! If there’s anyone in there, we’ve been successful.

What can fans expect from the show tonight? New songs, old songs, a mix of both?
Blake Richardson: New songs, old songs, probably about an equal amount.
Reece Bibby: A lot of unreleased stuff.
Blake Richardson: I don’t think we’re doing a cover today.
Reece Bibby: We haven’t rehearsed for like six weeks! It’s the first show and we’ve not really prepared like we would have wanted to, so it’s going to be an interesting one.
Do you have anything you’d like to say to your fans coming out to see you on tour?
All: Hi! We love you.
Blake Richardson: You are great. Thanks for coming to our tour. It’s going to be special. We appreciate everything you do. We love you, stay healthy, see you soon.

Lastly, we are here in Philly, have any of you tried a Philly cheesesteak yet? If so, what do you get on it?
Reece Bibby: The last time I was here I had one. I just arrived so I haven’t had one on this trip.
George Smith: I tried a vegan Philly cheesesteak, it was good.
What do you get on your cheesesteaks?
All: Cheese!
Go check out New Hope Club’s latest singles “Girl Who Does Both” and “Getting Better” from their upcoming album, and make sure you see the boys on tour if they are coming to a city near you!

emily antonia. she/her. prehistoric millenial. a relic of the Before Times.
obligatory welcome post. this is a marvel sideblog. i follow from @sithdownani.
about me: i still have the original .zip file containing every single issue of marvel's civil war that i downloaded in 2010. old enough to remember printing copy-pasted a"friend"gers tower-era fanfics from livejournal so i could read them in the middle of my university history classes. literally wept for joy when they announced avengers 1 was greenlit by paramount studios. i am ancient. don't mess with me.
what i like: tony stark. steve rogers, a.k.a. peter's original father figure. deadpool's sparkly nail polish collection. wandavision has been my otp since kindergarten. wanda and pietro are magneto's kids period. the one where literally everyone adopts peter parker.
favorite fandom tropes: clint in the vents. peter, resident Youth of avenger's tower, eating peanut butter straight out of the jar at 2 a.m. steve sleeping on a grease-stained sofa in the corner of tony's workshop. bucky and sam: special guest stars on brooklyn 99. coulson will always be everyone's favorite. kate and yelena are everyone's problem.
what i do not like: people forgetting that a lot of these comics were written for kids who felt (and feel) like outsiders. x-men gave my weird ass a place to belong in my youth and i'll be damned if that wasn't the entire point of the series. fandom drama. discourse in general, but especially discourse that reads like a disagreement between unhinged eighth graders. The Bad Ending.
under the cut: myspace survey from 2008 (to really drive home that i am too old to be here) in case, for some reason, you want to know more about me:
1. Ever been to a professional sports game? i bleed los angeles blue
2. Ever get engaged? yeah. i'm getting married about it.
3. Have you ever been on TV? yes.
4. Ever been to prom? only under duress.
5. Ever stayed up for 24 hours or more? i once hallucinated a blue coyote running across all 15 lanes of the southbound 405 through some part of orange county because it was 3 a.m., i'd just ended my third consecutive 12 hour work shift of the week, and my daily commute was 2 hours one-way
6. Have you ever been to a concert? favorite performance i ever saw was a defunct j-pop boyband front-man who happened to be playing at the nokia club for mysterious reasons
7. Have you ever been in a car accident? sideswiped by a big rig the day of my university music department audition. got a scholarship for showing up anyway.
8. Did you ever learn another language? studied classical latin in high school because apparently i had big plans for updating the roman empire
9. Do you wear make-up? you mean modern war paint? i sleep in it, baby
10. Ever caught the stove on fire? once caught the house on fire with a loaded drier and burned the entire place to the ground
11. Ever meet someone famous? in my misspent youth i was almost internet famous for writing a novel about two guys who ate a lot of ramen and beat the shit out of each other.
...so yeah, that's me. 'sup.

I saw a lot of ask here and I felt comfortable expressing myself too, why don't people have the same negative reaction when I say I'm a fan of some white artist? I said that I liked bts and some people started laughing I didn't understand, I also said that I liked ariana grande or even that latin singer anitta and nobody laughed at me, until a while ago I didn't comment that I liked bts, I don't listen to anyone but them in kpop now I don't care, there's also the issue of my age I'm 25 and bts were the only artists I really love, people say my time is up cause I should have liked 1D meanwhile I see men crying and hurting themselves because their football team didn't win and nobody says anything…what a crazy world
people are just full of opinions I don’t think u should pay attention to what people think you should do or like w this is your life and you should do what you want to do. I don’t get why girls get made fun of for liking Boybands…. It is so fucking stupid because guys literally have a meltdown because of football. You do you babe, how is your time up for liking a celebrity like this so dumb,

Feel like they chose those specific voters to create some discourse lol cause in reality there are like 12000 voters and most of them are probably normal adjacent
i mean, is any voting party in hollywood really normal when we still hear shit like "first black woman to be nominated" or "first latin singer" lol there was def always a prejudice against one dee as well for being a boyband, having mostly a young female fanbase, doing pop music etc etc

I think Harry’s biggest problem is that there’s no there there. He’s marketed as this woke, queer artist, but he can neither walk the walk or talk the talk. There’s no substance to his image. Scratch the surface even a little and you expose the unevolved straight man underneath. It’s relevant for both your discussion on discriminatory employment and his recent press missteps. Louis presents as a person with flaws so people accept that. Harry doesn’t so you get pushback. (1/2)
Likewise Harry is great at flag waving. When questioned, there’s no depth to his understanding of queer issues so people call him queerbaiter. Harry was less exposed as the most famous member of a boyband. He’s even stepped outside the music scene where his team have most of their influence. There’s no hiding. The GP know who he is now. Not all of them will love him, and those that don’t will gleefully expose his flaws. (2/2)
*******
The question about whether there's a there there for Harry as an artist and what the consequences will be of whatever the answer is - to me that's a central question of Harry's career. But I don't agree with many of your other premises.
One of the first thing this anon makes me think about is what fans mean when they say 'marketing'. Harry is not being marketed as a 'woke queer artist'. If you actually look at his marketing - that's not about being woke and queer. I'd be interested in talking about what it was (my starting point is aesthetically driven over other forms of speech. The key features of that aesthetic are engaging with both masculinity and femininity). But I think it's really important not to confuse what gets projected on him and the discourse, with how he gets understood. If you're going to argue he's marketed in a certain way - you have to point to material that has been produced by his team, or his or his team's contributions to material produced by other people. Rather than assume every way he's talked about is the result of marketing.
The second small point I want to make is that I don't think that the fact that he discriminates against women in the workplace has much to do with the question of whether there is a there there. Artists with a much more substantive sense of self that is much more explicitly feminist have treated women much worse than that. I think drawing connections between the decision people make about how to treat people when making art and the art itself never follows.
I also think there's a disconnect between your starting point - there's no there there - and your conclusion - the GP know who he is now. I think it was very telling how widely people were prepared to believe that he spat on Chris Pine - it suggests that there isn't a fixed idea of who he is in a lot of people's minds - but while I do think this year has changed the way people see him - I don't think that's fixed. Everything was too vague and distanced for that.
I am interested in both questions - whether there is a there there and how he's going to negotiate that and what the impact of this year has had on his career.
Particularly after the video for Music for a Sushi Restaurant - I have come to think there is often a there there, but he's not giving us access to it. I do wonder if that will change (it would come with serious challenges to his existing models of success).
As for the impact of this year on his career - I am fascinated by that and particularly by his plans for next year. He talked about coming back to Brazil next year - is he going to do a second Love on Tour leg in Latin America? The finances of that would probably work. But that would get him up to 5 months of touring. The question then becomes when and how is he going to exist in a pop culture way 2023?
It seems unlikely that he's going to release an album (and am I right in thinking we still have no word about his deal with Sony - except rumblings about it being negotiated and his team wanting a lot a few months ago), although he may make one (more time spent not doing pop culture relevant things). Is he not going to really appear at all? Is he going to do a cameo in one of the Marvel Movies? What impact will that have? (I personally think the odds are that he won't work in a Marvel movie and it'll play to his weaknesses and not his strengths).
And then with all that there's him saying that 2022 changed his life - that's fascinating to me - it does imply (but doesn't necessarily mean, because he could just be saying it) that his life in 2023 is different from what he'd expect at the beginning of 2022.
I feel like there's a lot of uncertainty about what Harry going into the new year and that's really interesting to me.
