DRAMA REVIEW | Perfect Marriage Revenge (2023)

There’s an argument to be made about how Perfect Marriage Revenge had a perfect execution because it was a 12 episodes long drama and didn’t waste time for unnecessary conflicts. Everything took its right time and was resolved in a cohesive way with the characters development.

Both leads were compelling and had amazing chemistry, but the secondary characters were equally interesting to watch. All the performances outstanding and you can tell the actors are enjoying themselves in their respective roles.

On a story about a woman looking for revenge against her own family, this kdrama had a perfect balance between makjang and romcom. Making it an easy and fun watch. I highly recommend it!

Mini-review:

Look, I'm not gonna lie. I started this drama for a very superficial reason: Kim Yoo Jung and Song Kang are one of the most gorgeous couples I've ever seen. And tbh, that's one of the things that kept me watching until the end. The first half was pretty fun, thanks to their will-they-won't-they dynamic and some really funny supporting characters and recurring gags. Unfortunately, it began to drag around the middle part, and then it got more and more boring with each passing episode. By the time the final episode came out, I no longer cared about the plot, the characters or anything else (although the ending itself was quite nice). With all that in mind, I can't help but think My Demon would have worked much better as a movie.

Hands down a very underrated hidden classic. It’s from 2013 set in 1997 about the pageant beauty Contest and financial crisis era. If that’s not your thing then this might suit you much. Honestly it did take me a handful of episodes to fully be attached. The acting is crazy good in this all around. I would say this drama is more about overcoming one’s struggle and finding peace with one’s self and with another. On a side note, where the heck can I find a man like, Kim Hyung Joon, Lee Sun Kyun’s character???????!!!!!?????

The leads had so little screentime today and I didn't even care coz I was crying so hard. Just. this is such an important issue.

NotFun Fact: The scars Reaper Yun had are directly based on the scars of real survivors. They really did get that disgusting shit carved into their bodies.

EDIT: Sidenote, it really emphasizes that the point of this drama/webtoon are the stories of the victims. Life is hard, people have been through terrible things, everyone's pain is valid and we should do our best to help each other.

While it's really fun to go into the main characters' backstories, their dynamics, and tragic pasts - I'm a sucker for the JR storyline - that is NOT the point.

I was one of the people who was championing more LSH screentime for this episode since I knew he was more involved in the webtoon arc for this, but I'm not disappointed he didn't get more. That could have taken away the focus from this very important story they want to tell.

So I'd encourage people to hold that lens as they watch this series rather than complain there wasn't enough screentime for the main characters.
