I finally got all the pieces of Virginia's "Meet Outfit" and did a little photoshoot! (The indoor photos were taken at the historic Hotel Ruby Marie here in Madison WI, where they very kindly allow cosplayers and other photographers to use their beautiful vintage decor as a backdrop!)

Oh, and because I'm super proud of her jewelry, some closeups and info on each:

This is the pendant on her necklace; it was inspired by Victorian-era mourning jewelry, which often contained hair or other parts of the deceased loved one. If you look closely, you may notice her father's photo is actually Jim Beaver as Carter Cushing in Crimson Peak (Edith Cushing was one of my main inspirations for Virginia). I edited the photo for that "vintage" feel. The hair, which is meant to be from her father's beard, was actually taken from Captain's tail! 😅

I made her ring using a blank DIY ring from Etsy and a skull charm intended for nail art

Her bracelet is made from real Jet beads (I made it by taking apart a human-sized bracelet and restringing part of it). Jet was a very popular stone for mourning jewelry in the Victorian era.

Little libraries -

Free little Libraries are a great passive mutual aid project. Originally inspired by DIY projects they are easy to build, are generally low maintenance once established, creative and fun artworks within themselves, and its a great way to introduce a gift economy into your neighborhood!

History-

2009- Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one room schoolhouse. It was a tribute to his mother; she was a teacher who loved to read. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors and friends loved it, so he built several more and gave them away.

UW-Madison’s Rick Brooks saw Bol’s do-it-yourself project while they were discussing potential mutual aid projects. They were inspired by community gift-sharing networks, “take a book, leave a book” collections in coffee shops and public spaces, and most especially by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.

2010 the name Little Free Library was established and the purpose of these Little Free Library book exchanges became clear: to share good books and bring communities together.As Bol and Brooks continued to give away Little Free Libraries with wooden charter signs, engraved with official charter numbers, curiosity and demand for more Libraries grew. The acceleration centered on the enthusiasm of early adopters and stewards, who were crucial advocates. Some small grants and informal partnerships began to have an impact on Little Free Library’s ability to keep up with demand.

2011 brought national media attention, and by the end of the year there were nearly 400 Little Free Libraries in existence. That number would skyrocket to over 4,000 Libraries within a year. 

2012  Little Free Library became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the states!

Little Free Libraries have continued to grow by leaps and bounds every year. In 2022 we surpassed 150,000 registered Libraries in more than 120 countries worldwide. Even establishing an online map and app to help people locate the libraries!

How do I do this?

The little library website hosts a bunch of plans and blueprints to make a library or get ideas for locations. Even having ready to order kits if you want!

You will need either land or public approval to establish one however, this can be by the city, neighbours, or other public spaces but they are technically put on private land. You wont find anyone ho would object to their installation but I would not recommend just installing one unless your okay with it being taken down.

Pick a location that has a lot of foot traffic and be highly visible to anyone nearby and is accessible as possible.

Register your library! You can get an official charter sign by doing this step!!

Fill it up with books!!

saw something going around a little while back asking people what they accomplished in 2023 and just going down the list i really think i was so much more human that year than i ever was before:

-i feel more stable and secure in the city i live in than i ever have… my house feels like a home for the first time and i’ve gotten to surround myself with lovers, intimate friends, and more more more

-i’m jewish now + i’m part of the diy scene (again) and the leather scene (for the first time)

-i made so much art (zines, poetry, collage, painting, leather) and encountered even more

-i made a lot of strides in my transsexual healthcare

-i visited out-of-town friends (and/or travelled with them) more than i ever have (the twin cities, boston, okc, galway, madison area, pittsburgh, bois brule, milwaukee, the bay area, dubuque, grand rapids)

-and then on the flip side, hosted more out-of-town friends and friends of friends who were visiting, passing through, or needed a place to stay

-finally it’s sunk in that “you can do what you want forever”

One month and counting until the 5 Seconds of Summer Show.

Now although it is July and the tour begins at the end of this month, I have now reached a month until the North America leg begins with my first show kicking off the tour. I should probably go ghost on social media soon to avoid any kind of spoilers. I have officially welcomed in every last bit of stress that has come alongside planning for my shows. By the end of the year, I will have officially been a fan of 5SOS for TEN years so I deemed it appropriate to be a little bit extra for this tour than I have before. As of right now, I will be attending the Mohegan Sun show, both nights in Boston, Madison Square Garden, and Chicago. I have begun preparing the intense itinerary that comes a long with going on tour with your favorite band, with all the hotels, bus tickets, and flights. I am in the process of hand-painting jeans commemorating the last 10 years with the band and it continues to be very stressful despite how well everything is turning out so far.

I posted a snippet of my creative process on Sunday and the video has since blown up on TikTok. While I love the kind words that so many strangers are leaving on the video, I hope this leads to me connecting with more 5SOS fans over all. I’m looking forward to meeting and making new friends throughout this tour. I decided that I wanted to go full DIY for this go round and am surely on my way to completing all of the projects I’ve created for myself. Instead of purchasing multiple pairs of album earrings to contribute to last years Youngblood earrings serve, I instead learned how to make the earrings myself and turned all of 5SOS’ albums into pairs for me to rock at each show.

With Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour taking the world by storm this year, it came with a lot of creativity and fun ideas for people in other fanbases. Hence why I have also began making up as many 5SOS themed friendship bracelets to trade or give away at shows. Although it is tiring and time consuming, I love seeing everything come together and cannot wait for the shows next month! This one is going to be special I can feel it.

Greta Van Fleet - Grand Rapids

Intro

This week I will be covering the second show I went to in 2022, Greta Van Fleet Grand Rapids. Greta played at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, MI on March 12th 2022. As previously discussed in my first blog post, The Rival Sons and The Velveteers opened for this date as well.

This show was the second show of the Greta Van Fleet - Dreams in Gold Tour! I had never seen a show at the Deltaplex before and even though I loved the artists performing I will never be attending a show/concert again at this venue.

The Outfit

For the second show of my DIG tour, I decided to wear the same pants I wore to the first show only because I did not plan accordingly and LOVE these pants. This time I wore a red tank to go with the pink/red in the pants. I paired the shirt with a white frill jacket and made another DIY cowboy hat to wear to the show, only because I had such a fun time making the first one.

Pre-Show

For this show I did not camp out this time, which I am glad I did not because on this day there were freezing temperatures and below freezing windchill. I really felt for all the dedicated fans who camped out OVERNIGHT & all day, the day of the show. I believe the GVF team ordered pizzas and hot chocolate for the fans in line to help them face the cold.

I had dinner and drinks with some other friends I met in line at the concert two days previously in Kalamazoo. It was nice to not have to wait in line or camp out, I was able to spend more time with people I met in line and grow on those friendships.

The Merchandise/Lining-Up

The merchandise was the same as it was the previous two days prior. This time I did not see any merchandise team members set up tents outside the venue as they had done before. I assume this is because of the weather and how cold it was that day.

The Performance

As always Greta Van Fleet’s performance was amazing. This being only the second show of this tour, I know the band was still getting in the groove of things. The band had only previously done a short tour called Strange Horizons tour the previous fall, only playing a couple live shows over the United States.

I was able to get within the first five rows of the GA audience with only walking in about 20 minutes before doors opened. My favorite song performed at this show had to be Trip the Light Fantastic, the lights and the ambience in the arena during that song was unmatched. This is also one of my favorite songs and to my knowledge was only performed in a handful of shows during this DIG tour.

Getting out of the venue was not too difficult, but the parking lot was a mess. Overall, I did not like the venue or the venue staff. I know that people camping for the show had a lot of issues with queuing inside the venue- after camping outside in freezing temperatures all day and had trouble with the staff once inside the venue. The Deltaplex in Grand Rapids is now closed
