Endangered MerMay: Polar Bear
Tumblr media
A Polar Bear Mermaid? That doesn't any make sense!
Actually it does! Polar Bears are classified as Marine Mammals, grouping them up with manatees, whales, and plenty of other creatures that could be mermaid-esc!
For my MerMay lore, the Polar Bear Mermaid is one of the most unique mermaids to exist; It can walk on land! Much like Polar Bears, these mermaids are solitary. They have adapted so well to their climate, they look almost identical to their bear counterpart- albeit with human features and complex culture. These creatures traditionally use bone tools to aid in seal hunts and have hunting rites of passage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Polar Bear is endangered due to the ever increasing threat of climate change. Only though world wide funding and global agreement may this threat actually be dealt with.

This is a drawing I did for a potential MerMay workshop ad, so the girl isn’t really a character in know much about. She doesn’t have a name or backstory or anything, but she’s based off a pygmy seahorse. In doing research to make this, I learned that male seahorses actually have heightened levels of prolactin (the hormone used to regulate lactation in female mammals) while they’re pregnant, which is honestly even weirder and more fascinating than the males being the brooding vessel in and of itself. Animals are cool and very interesting.
Anyway, that development resulted in the conclusion that female seahorse mers do not have breasts, but I’m still debating whether males would instead? By all preset rules for my merfolk thus far, they should, so probably? But yeah. Weird little guys.

Guys, to help you in your MerMay NSFW (or just courting) Species guide! (YIPPEEEE)
This is for mammal species! (Mostly because most fish just… lay eggs and whoever gets there first wins-)
Orcas: Male orcas make different types of displays or show off different skills. Some methods to attract females range from posturing to make themselves look good (think of how people flex their muscles) aggressive displays towards other males, but mostly in general, and noises such as clicks, whistles, and lots of other sounds.
Noises and sounds are the most looked-at trait, according to marine biologists, because these are ways the animals communicate. Scientists have also seen that different pods or groups will look for different traits, these bonds can last over a period of several years, or even a lifetime! Male orcas are even known to go back to the same females, showing they have relationships! Even though they aren’t a monogamous species as a whole, or course.
Average offspring amount: 1, a set of twins is possible, but rare
Dolphins: Dolphins are actually really promiscuous, many females having multiple males breed her in a season, but I don’t say that for just the girls! Many dolphins, like the Bottlenose, the males are seen to engage in same-sex breedings, and it’s even proven to help with their relationships as a whole! Males have a few ways of attracting females, tail slapping, headbutting, and body slamming are common ways to get a girl’s attention… which isn’t always a romantic way to start the season.
Dolphins are actually very mean during breeding season, and they will often force themselves on females, chasing them away from the pod so multiple males can… well. They’ve even been seen to drown babies just for a chance with the mom. Females select males based on things like agility, dominance, and physical looks.
Average offspring amount: 1, less than 1% chance to have twins
Sperm Whales: Testosterone fueled, angsty rage is a good way to describe it. Males literally go head to head, slamming their heads and bodies against one another as they call for females. Whoever wins is seen as the dominant male, and females flock to the bull with the best clicks, physical prowess, strength and size. Sperm whales often have harems, where one male defends multiple females as his own, and sires the children. The females usually mate with the dominant male, so… sister wives?
Average offspring amount: 1, less than 1% chance to have twins.
Seals: THEY ACTUALLY GO INTO HEAT! Yup, heat or estrus season can last from 1-9 weeks. They actually have a pre-mating season courting ritual too, and it’s… kind of wholesome. Both genders participate by blowing bubbles in the water, rolling around, that thing where they smack their sides with their flippers, and mouthing at each other’s necks. Actual mating season gets tricky, with males going underwater and calling for females, doing underwater dives to impress. Males actually make sure they are close to foraging and resting sites, just so they know they will get some attention.
The girls don’t fuck around either, when the males get aggressive, so do they. The males engage in ‘rough play’ which is chasing, flipper and neck biting, and embracing, which is a polite way to say ‘smothered with aggressive, forced cuddles.’ Anytime females are approached by a male, they growl, wave their flippers, and bob their heads aggressively. Males are known to mate with several females.
Average offspring amount: 1, twins are extremely rare
Sea Lions: Whoo-fuckin’-boy. This time, girls are the ones to initiate! It starts with males establishing a territory for themselves along a beach, fighting each other and proving to the females they are the ones to be with. Often the battles get bloody, very bloody. Barking and growling at other rival males is common.
Males breed with multiple females, and the females actually approach the male. They come into heat too, and go to the male with a submissive posture and lowered head, which starts the breeding progress. Females decide when they are done too, by biting the male who kind of awkwardly retreats. Kinda funny.
Average offspring amount: 1, twin births are seen only in captivity
Manatees: One cow (female) can get the attention of multiple bulls (males). It is by god, literally a race. Females will twist and turn on a whim, forcing males to try and remain close to her, following as close as possible for a chance to breed. Males are, obviously, competing with each other for the chance to breed, and this is one of the few mammalian marine species that have different… positions in which they breed.
Females may also mate with several males, but they don’t form bonds or pairs for life either any of them.
Average offspring amount: 1, twins are very rare, but can occur.

I want to share this absolute delight I stumbled upon while Googling manatees. It's a poem from the 19th century, and the rest of it can be found in "Parodies of the Works of English and American Authors" on Project Gutenberg.
Enjoy.

Speaking as a fish nerd, I think Ariel having bright colored fins means it makes more sense for her to have dark skin than light skin.
Bright colored fish are typically in warm water -> shallow -> sunny -> tropical -> close to the equator. The people in these warmer, sunnier regions close to the equator are often darker skinned, so it makes sense that the mermaids would be too.
A pale Ariel would be from colder or deep water, so her tail would likely be more muted, and assuming she's a mammal, she would have a thick layer of blubber to keep warm.
Obviously there's exceptions to that, (wrasse my beloved) and also the fact that mermaids aren't real so you can do whatever you want when drawing or writing about them, but I just think it's neat.

PARALOUSE (Bug/Water), SQUAKER (Water) & PARASCYLLA (Bug/Ghost) PARALOUSE (Parasite/Louse/Perilous) is a small bug type pokemon that lives among the corals, it awaits for a fish pokemon with a mout big enough to jump in, where it will eat and replace that pokemon's tongue. Once it has gained enough strenght by weakening its host it will evolve
PARASCYLLA (Parasite/Scylla) the "Mermaid" pokemon. It emerges from its host's mouth, the one it completely fills. At this point its host is competely taken over, becoming PARASCYLLA's new tail. To further keep its "tail" in place, it will stick its lower legs through the fish's gills, securing it in place.
SQUAKER (Squawk/Cracker) is a parrot fish pokemon that inhabits the same coral reef where PARALOUSE can be found, they love to feed on coral using their strong beaks to cut and swallow large chunks of it, which sadly makes it the perfect victim for PARALOUSE. How ever if SQUAKER manages to avoid becoming infected by PARALOUSE it can evolve into the dangerous PARROTEER (Parrot/Privateer)
Tumblr media
PARROTEER (Water/Dark) is PARASCYLLA's natural predator, it preys upon PARASCYLLA with extreme prejudice, using its massive size and hard-as-rock head to knock them out, it then uses its bolt cutter-like beak to cut them in half by the waist, feeding only on the upper bug half and leaving the tails to sink to the bottom
PARALOUSE is based on the cymothoa exigua, a type of parasitic isopod that attached to fishes mouths replacing their tongues
Tumblr media
PARASCYLLA is based on a twisted version of a mermaid with some inspiration is the Greek monster Scylla, a creature with the upper torso of a woman, but a lower body made out of heads and tails
Tumblr media
SQUAKER is based on the Steephead parrotfish and its colors are based on the Scarlet Macaw
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PARROTEER is based on the Humphead parrotfish and its colors are based on the Dracula Parrot, as well as being based on a Pirate
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PARROTEER hunting and feeding only on PARASCYLLA is a reference to Pirates hunting mermaids as represented in some myths and popular media, like Peter Pan or Pirates of the Caribbean
At the moment, SQUAKER is the only suitable pokemon available in PARALOUSE's habitat for it to attach, but, if more pokemon were avaible it could attach to them as long as they met certain criteria: -Being a Fish (No mammals, reptiles of crustaceans) -Having a big enoug mouth Here are some examples of PARASCYLLA using other fish pokemons as its tail
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only exception to this rule being Gygantamax PARASCYLLA
