Racism is Complicated

I was accused of being a racist the other day. Also a bitch, but the racist accusation was more interesting. Back story; At a local cafe I ordered and got my food and went to sit down. There was one open table on the patio. There was a mauve leather handbag hanging on the back of a chair at the table. I decided that either it had been forgotten by the last diner, or had been dropped off by someone behind me in the line who had not yet ordered and received their food. I figured either way, taking it to the counter was a good idea. So I did. A young woman from far back in the long line came up to complain that I had “moved her bag”. I offered up the thought that her bag had been untended and I had turned it into the staff for safe keeping. To which she replied “I was saving that table!”

I asked if she thought she could basically crash the line and take a table ahead of people who had been there before her arrival? She said yes. I pointed out that clearly she was mistaken and she should get her bag back from the staff. I went back to my table and my party to enjoy my meal.

Sometime later she came with her phone and took a picture of me. I smiled and said nothing. She called me a “Bitch” loudly and then turned to leave. She paused before she exited to turn back and scream “Racist!!” drawing the attention of everyone in the place. Which I thought was interesting. Because if I was, in that exchange, racist, I was racist to a mauve leather handbag. Because I made the decision to ‘Unreserve” the table because I thought it was rude to tag a table in that manner. I had no idea, at the time, that she was Asian.

But her assumption was that I had made my decision based on her race, not on her lack of manners. Was I a bitch? Maybe, from her perspective, it was a pretty aggressive move on my part, taking her bag to the counter. But was I racist? Pretty much no.

I have experienced this before. People of a different ethnicity than I, accusing me of racism because I would not accommodate their rudeness. People who escalated their emotional response all out of proportion to the situation. People who are undoubtedly hypersensitive because they do encounter racism. But also, people who can’t tell the DIFFERENCE between a normal interaction between two people with conflicting views on what is acceptable behavior and one between two people in conflict because one is disrespecting the other based on their race.

Newsflash. If someone is a different race than I am, and we disagree about a situation? That doesn’t make me racist. In fact in this instance the young woman with the mauve leather purse gets the racist tag, because she assumed that I was behaving in a way that she didn’t like because of my race. Instead of because of her actions.

It’s complicated, I get that. Everyone is racist. This exchange is just an example of that. EVERYONE. We all make assumptions based on appearances. My personal challenge is Middle Eastern men. I’ve had a few bad experiences, I have to struggle to rein in my knee jerk response. I have lived where I was the minority. I get it. But NOT everything is racism. People can be difficult or jerks or rude or stupid with race never becoming part of the equation. Which is why people of the same race are often in conflict as well.

We ALL need to not dismiss the possibility that any given encounter is influenced by nothing more that our imperfect humanity.

Memes make it to easy to generalize. Don’t generalize. It’s racist.
