BEE !! HAPPY 400 ILYSM
can i get #7 from the friends to lovers list with slightly drunk college realer and matt post party ??
maggie baby! ily!
mentions of alcohol
7-friends to lovers: being awfully nervous when they're having a sleepover because they just wonder where their thoughs will be wandering when they're sharing a bed
-----
Matt could hold his liquor a hell of a lot better than you could. He could probably outdrink you and still have a sense of sanity. Thankfully, you didn’t get as drunk as you wanted to, grumbling about some project and an 8am class, but you were still giggly and unsteady which led to Matt helping you to your dorm from a frat. He grabs your key from you and helps you in, sitting you upright on the bed.
“I can’t take my shoes off.”
“What?” He asks.
“I can’t take them off, the world starts spinning when I bend over.” He sighs and gets on his knees in front of you.
“What are you doing?”
“Taking them off for you, unless you wanna sleep with them on?” He joked and you scoffed and shoved the heel of your sneaker at him. He laughs as he takes the both of them off and turns around so you can get changed.
“Can you toss me that sweatshirt on my chair?” He grabs it but before he tosses it to you, he feels the material.
“Wait- did you steal this from me?”
“I didn’t steal it! I just… never returned it.”
“That’s stealing.”
“Shut up, lawyer.”
“Soon to be.”
“You should have an off button, or at least a mute. Give it to me.” He hands you the sweatshirt and you throw it on.
“Alright, I’m headed home, catch you in class tomorrow? Unless you’re hungover, of course.”
“I hate you, I’ll be fine.” He laughs as he leaves and you lock the door after him, smiling to yourself.
Climbing into bed, you get under the covers and begin to drift off to sleep a few minutes later until you hear several knocks on the door.
“It’s Matt, can you let me in?” You hear and sigh, taking the warm covers off and unlocking the door for him.
“What’s wrong?” You ask, rubbing the sleep from your eyes.
“I-uh… heh, I lost my keys.” He says.
“What about Foggy?”
“Out with Marci, probably won’t be back until tomorrow. Can I stay here?” You looked shocked at his question.
“Here? Matt, I don’t think I have the room for the both of us.”
“I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“I’m not letting you sleep on a dorm room floor. Maybe if I move some pillows there should be enough room for the two of us.”
“Are you sure? I am totally fine with sleeping on the floor.”
“Matt, get in the bed.” He huffs and gets in after you, the bed squeaking under your weight and suddenly you realize how close the two of you are under the blanket.
“Goodnight, Matty.”
“Goodnight.” But your brain doesn’t begin its descent to dreamland, no, it starts overthinking. Can he smell the alcohol that you were too drunk to wash off? Are your feet too cold? Are you on his unspoken side of the bed? Could he hear your racing heartbeat, telling him that you felt a little something a little stronger? Little did you know he was sweating for the same reason. Neither of you were getting any rest in this bed.
Matt was trying to wrack his brain, trying to think of any logical reason he was overthinking sharing a bed with you. You were irregularly warm, he could feel the heat wafting off of you practically in waves.
Finally he has enough, and shakes you “awake” although he already knew you were wide awake.
“Hey.”
“Hi.”
“I can hear you thinking.”
“Yeah? What does it sound like?”
“Nails on a chalkboard.”
“That seems like an insult but I’ll let it slide.” He laughs.
“Can I- can I come closer?” He’s taken aback by your words, but nods and lets you tuck into his body nonetheless.
“What are you thinking about?” He asks, voice soft and somehow lulling you to sleep.
“Is this a safe space?” You ask, half joking and half serious.
“Always.”
“I’m thinking about you.” Your heartbeat flutters and he wraps his arm around you just a little tighter.
“In what way?”
“In this way. The way we’re close right now, my head on your chest,” and you can’t tell if it’s the alcohol still in your system or just being exhausted from tiptoeing around Matt but you keep spilling, “I want it, Matt. I want us… like this.” He smiles.
“Can I kiss you?”
“What?”
“Can I kiss you?”
“Y-yeah, yeah you can.” It doesn’t take him anything else than your affirmation for him to cup your face and dip his chin to connect your lips. He smiles into it and it grows deeper as you swing your leg over his body, straddling him as he rests his hands on your hips, pulling you until your body lay directly on his.
“I don’t- mm- wanna crush you.”
“You won’t, just keep kissing me.” And you do, you’ll kiss him for as long as he wants.

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health Attacks the Republican Anti-transgender Policies
Tumblr media
The World Professional Association for Transgender Health has released a letter from WPATH President, Dr. Marci Bowers, addressing the attacks on gender affirming care throughout the United States. Read it. This is important!
Here’s the letter:
//Dear Colleagues,
In the United States, 2023 has been a difficult year thus far for trans rights, to say the least. Although anti-trans sentiment has simmered for years, the exponential rise in TGD [Transgender and gender diverse] identification among adolescents has triggered unprecedented attacks against all things trans.
American anti-trans legislation
More than 400 anti-transgender bills, particularly in conservative states, see anti-trans messaging as a winning political posture for some. Eleven (11) states alone have already banned or restricted gender affirming care for gender diverse adolescents.
Last week, Missouri became the first state to attempt gender enforcement on adult populations when attorney general, Andrew Bailey, issued an 'emergency declaration' that added draconian new hurdles for adult trans care to its adolescent ban.
It is already probable that gender affirming care will be a wedge issue in the 2024 US election cycle.
Cherry-picking arguments
Globally, many of the arguments used here in the US to ban transgender care have been cherry-picked or use narrowly excerpted language for restrictions that have been implemented in gender services policies in Sweden and the UK---'lack of evidence', 'experimental' and 'focus on mental health'. They also ignore European countries where access to trans care has recently expanded (Spain, Portugal, and France).
And unlike Swedish and British restrictions---which do not end treatment but rather, make research participation compulsory in order to answer remaining questions---conservative US policy makers have no interest in research on TGD medical therapy; they only care about shutting it down.
Rather than safeguard young people by outlawing automatic weapons and high capacity munitions, conservatives feel that banning trans care and removing LGBTQ-themed books will better protect society.
Anguish and despair
Caught in the middle are TGD individuals, providers, and families, who are now in anguish here in US-affected states. WPATH membership continues to receive stories of growing despair, clinics closing, families moving or seeking healthcare out of state [see link]. Suicidality and desperation are again, needlessly in play.
Telemedicine and the emergence of sanctuary US states (California, Minnesota, and Colorado) that have chosen to defend access to trans care, provide some hope. But real progress on the road back will be difficult until the flow of anti-trans legislation slows and then stops. If there is one reductionist word that WPATH does not deserve, it is advocacy--all scientific organizations participate in some form of advocacy.
Scientific and biological arguments
Tumblr media

That said, the scientific and biological arguments can all be won and should continue to be argued. In a recent interview, Dr. Eli Coleman responded
"WPATH followed a rigorous, multi-year process and was based on the best available scientific evidence and weighing all risks and benefits to arrive at the recommendations in our Standards of Care 8 guidelines. Our multi-step methodology is clearly set forth in the guidelines themselves.
“When you compare the process we followed, the SOC8 has by far the more robust methodology than any other trans health related guidelines. We had 119 experts from around the world involved, developed PICO questions which formed the basis of systematic reviews, used a consensus-based approach (Delphi) involving all committee members to arrive at our conclusions and then graded the strength of our recommendations.
“We had an extensive period of public comment on a draft of the SOC8 and this input was checked against the available evidence resulting in the final version of the SOC8. The rationale for our recommendations is clearly explicated in the SOC8 referencing the extant research. WPATH stands behind our process and conclusions."
The recent New York Times opinion piece, "What Decades of Providing Trans Care Have Taught Me", was my take on the situation and can be read here.
Make the suffering visible
The first step on the road back, in my opinion, will be to allow the public to hear the anguish and the stories of those in pain as a direct result of anti-trans legislation, difficult as this will be to watch---and to pin this pain upon those legislators and policy makers who have inflicted the agony.
In my interview with CBS Evening News to be aired any day, I called it 'legislative cruelty'. The moment we are in reminds me of San Francisco's Harvey Milk and his plea to gay persons to come out. We need to be heard-trans persons, allies, parents, families, politicians, clergy---those who have been hurt and those who know us.
Intersectionality
The second step on the road back will be to unite disparate causes in our fight against a common foe. An attack on trans care is an attack on women. It is an attack on black people, brown people, and Asian people. It is an attack on Jewish, Muslim, Hindi, Sikh, and trut Christian communities. It is an attack on diversity and all of the ideals that diversity holds. It is an attack on us all.
A majority of Americans favor access to adolescent trans care (see link to NPR-Marist poll) but the support is regional and it is thin. We need to better explain what adolescent TGD care looks like, why it is effective and indicated and who these patients really are.
Anti-trans legislation needs to be fought with every voice, every thought, every inclination by all who know it. We need to make anti-trans legislation a losing political issue.
A need for sex education
Already lost in this debate is the deplorable state of health and sex education throughout the Southern US. Furthering this ignorance, books are now banned, especially and specifically those with LGBTQI themes. It is of little surprise to many that persistent rates of new HIV infection, incest, and STDs remain highest where sex education is lowest, most in states where anti-trans legislation has been proposed.
What is a woman?
And finally, 'What is a Woman?', the title to a trite and condescending 2022 American movie produced by conservative Matt Walsh, whose edits left out any answer to the question, as though the answer was obvious.
What was cut from the piece was reality; that nature lacks a definitive answer to the question. Because there is no biological measure----not chromosomes, not hormones, not anatomy nor any of the six other biological markers of sex---a woman is what society sees based upon the gender identity the individual projects. No measure in biology gets it right every time. For every rule, there is an exception.
Sex and gender are complicated and diverse---but let us explain the phenomena, not allow the issues to be put back in the societal closet.
Ultimately, what terrifies conservatives most is that gender diversity is a force of nature that can no longer be contained by religious conscription or enforcement of a gender binary.
Killarney, Ireland and EPATH [The European Professional Association for Transgender Health] will again surely exceed expectations as we meet April 26-28, 2023.
Until we all dance once more.

Sashannarcy Week Day 6: Song Lyrics
Can i just say that this was, far and away, the single hardest entry to write.
I mean, writing it was easy since stress is a great motivator, but actually coming up with something to write was harder than anything else. I struggled to come up with a song that wasn’t A. too depressing and angsty. and B. completely unrelated.
I then remembered that Amphibia is a Disney show and decided to mine from there.
Elton John is a good song writer and ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ is a great song. So that’s what i went with. I also decided to write in Lumity, since i like the crack theory that Marcy moves to Connecticut and befriends Luz.
Anyway, thank you @phrogfrommars again for the Sashannarcy Week.
In this story: It’s prom night in Marcy’s new school and she never got the courage to ask her Loves to come over to be her dates. Luckily, Luz is a good friend who likes to meddle. Romantic dancing abounds.
Words: 2.3k
Night had fallen over Gravesfield Conneticut. By all accounts, this night was no different than any other one: The sky was clear, the moon was full, and the temperature was nice and cool. This night, however, was vastly different for the students of Gravesfield High School. Tonight was the night of Prom.
Gravesfield High was not a particularly large high school, it had never had a graduating class larger than 400. And yet those students were enjoying the night in style like they were from a city rather than a large town. Fancy dresses and nice corsages were as far as the eye could see, with the prom king and queen arriving in a rental limousine.
The gymnasium was blasting a K-pop song at full blast, and many of the students had formed a semi-mosh pit in front of it. Streamers hung from the rafters and a few balloons were on the gym floor as many couples tried to dance with one another. It was, by all accounts, a very nice night.
“Marcy, you can’t just spend the whole evening in the bathroom.”
“Yes I can, Luz. Watch me!”
Or, at least, it was a nice night if you weren't Marcy Wu.
The Taiwanese girl was huddled on top of a toilet in the girls room, her knees to her chest as she laid her head on said knees. Her hair was done up in ringlets, something possible as she’d decided to grow her hair out over the last three years since moving to Connecticut. She was wearing a very cute looking forest green dress with black flower designs across the chest. Lily’s were woven into her hair, and she looked stunning.
“Marcy, come on.” knocking sounded on the door. “Please come out?”
“No.” Marcy huddled further into her little ball and tried to block out the world.
She was being stupid, she knew that she was, but right now she didn't care. She knew that Sasha and Anne hadn’t forgotten about her, she knew that if she asked they would probably come out to see her.
And yet…
It was Prom. Prom. She’d been planning to ask out Sasha and Anne to prom ever since she first learned about it all those years ago. It was how she wanted to confess, she had it all planned out. Moving to the literal other side of the country hadn’t changed that desire, just made her have to plan out how she was going to manage it all.
And nothing. Sasha and Anne hadn’t said anything so neither did she. And now Prom was happening and the two loves of her life were on the west coast, probably going together to prom, and Marcy was once again forgotten.
“No you’re not Marcy! No one’s forgotten you!” She could hear her new friend, her only friend in all of gravesfield, call out from the other side of the stall door.
Luz Noceda was a godsend: a quirky girl who kept up with Marcy’s infodumps, who understood Marcy’s desire to flee into fantasy, and who shared her love for Anime and complicated fantasy works that needed entire encyclopedias to keep track of the backstory of.
Marcy had only come to Prom because Luz had insisted. Marcy had almost asked Luz out as a friend just so she wouldn’t be alone had Luz’s girlfriend from… somewhere out of state arrived with a bouquet and a face like a tomato.
“I… didn’t think I said that out loud.” Marcy muttered to herself.
“I mean, I only listened to the end part if that makes you feel better?”
“Not really. Look, Luz, i appreciate what you’re trying to do but i just want to be alone for a bit right now. Go dance with Amity, please?” Marcy said, somehow curling up even tighter.
“If you stay in here all night you’ll miss the surprise…”
Marcy blinked and lifted her head. “What’d you say?”
“Nothing!” Well, if Marcy wasn’t curious before now she was. “Look, can i make you a deal?”
“...sure.” Marcy planted her head back on her knees and listened.
“If you come out to the dance floor for at least five minutes with me and Amity, then afterward we’ll go out and watch ‘War Of The Warlocks’ yeah?”
‘I always watched that with Anne and Sasha…’ she thought to herself.
But Anne and Sasha weren’t coming, because neither of them brought it up and she never asked. Maybe talking about all her theories about some of the script and set design choices would make her feel happier.
It couldn’t make her feel worse.
With a sigh, Marcy uncurled herself from atop the toilet and opened the stall door, looking at her friend. Luz was in a very nice black floor-length dress that went down to her combat boots, while she had a suit jacket and shirt on top. It was a nice combo of feminine and masculine designs so it was a perfect Luz outfit. She’d gelled her hair back, giving her a roguish appearance
Normally, Marcy would be asking about the odd corsage over her breast: A purple and green thing that almost looked like a melting flower that… was moving? But right now she was too sad to care.
“That’s the spirit Marcy!” Luz grabbed her hand and led her out of the bathroom, where a long line of girls waited with annoyed expressions.
“Finally! It’s about time you both got out of there. Do you freaks know how long this make-up needs to be tou-” The red-haired girl was shut up by a hard shove on her back sending her through the closing doors with a yelp, her friends following after her with scared glances to the girl standing behind them.
“Don't care. Didn’t ask. Shut up and go to the bathroom already Tiffany.” Amity Blight, Luz’s girlfriend from… somewhere, she never told, said firmly. The girl was wearing a deep purple dress with a white collar and shoulders. Bright green buttons ran up and down each side of her top while her sleeves were poofy and seemed to look like green eyed faces. Her hair was done up in a complicated looking braid.
“Ah, good. Glad you’re out Marcy.” Amity said with a small smile.
“Been out for years but thanks for noticing.” Marcy replied glumly, stepping aside so the small gang of girls tagging along with the local prom queen could pass by without comment. Luz chuckled and Amity let out a small giggle as they both led her out onto the dance floor.
“Are we ready?” Luz whispered to her girlfriend as they did so.
“Yep, just need to go set the music.” Amity whispered back with a serious expression. She nodded and afterwards, with a shocked gasp, pointed across the hall.
“Oh my titan, Or god, Or whatever! What is that?” Amity said, her voice coming out high and yet, somehow, unconvincing. Marcy and Luz just stared at her, Marcy with confusion and Luz with encouragement, when Amity decided to bolt towards the mosh pit.
Luz waited an appropriately long time before something caught her eye, she looked over towards the entrance and smirked before looking back at her glum looking friend. “Hey Marcy? I’m going to go get some punch, be back in a bit!”
Marcy just stared shocked as Luz ran away, leaving her alone in the middle of a crowd of people. ‘This was your idea…’ she thought to herself. She was just starting to gain the courage to leave and go home when, with a crackle, the speakers around the gym blared to life.
‘Alright you lovely couples, this next one's for you!’
And then, with a dining of the lights into a more atmospheric coloring, the song began to play.
There's a calm surrender
To the rush of day
‘Elton John, really?’ Now the universe was just mocking her.
Before Marcy could turn to leave, a hand grabbed her arm gently. She turned to look and beheld a vision. Blonde hair cut short, almost buzzed. A deep red suit much like the one she’d worn back during that date to Stumpy’s. Metal armor covering her entire left arm and a rose held in her lips.
Except it couldn’t be her, she never brought it up.
When the heat of a rolling wind
Can be turned away
Before she could fully process, Marcy felt herself be drawn into a waltz. A firm hand at the base of her back and her hand held tightly in anothers. Marcy couldn’t do anything but stare deeply into the beautiful blue eyes of the person dancing with her.
An enchanted moment
And it sees me through
It's enough for this restless warrior
Just to be with you
‘She’s here, she’s really here.’ Marcy’s thoughts all ran together as her chest almost exploded with shock and joy. She was dancing with Sasha, one of the loves of her life. She was actually doing what she’d wanted to do since she ever learned of dancing and prom.
‘She’s here, she’s really here. But where’s…’
And can you feel the love tonight?
It is where we are
Sasha lifted her into a twirl and spun her along, and before Marcy knew it she was back in her arms. Except it wasn’t Sasha’s arms. Because Sasha didn’t have gorgeous hazel eyes, or beautiful frizzy brown hair. She wasn’t wearing a beautiful coral dress that went down to the floor or pearls formed into a tiara.
The vision of loveliness held her close and rested her head on Marcy’s shoulder. Sweeping back and forth along the dance floor, they both danced as if there was nobody else in the world.
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we got this far
‘They;re both here, they’re both here and dancing! They both came… for me?’ Marcy couldn’t believe it, she couldn’t believe anything as Anne dipped her low to the ground, low enough that Marcy saw Luz and Amity standing together and smiling off into the distance as they watched on.
Amity whispered something to Luz and they both held each other and started to dance just as Marcy was undipped and brought back to stare into Anne’s hazel eyes.
And can you feel the love tonight
How it's laid to rest?
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best
Anne spun her around and Sasha came back, catching her and holding her close like her own personal knight in shining armor. They spun around the dance floor together, Marcy listening to nothing but Sasha’s heartbeat.
And then there was Anne, catching her hand and bringing her close and before Marcy could bring her growing joy under control, they danced close together and Marcy was in heaven.
There's a time for everyone
If they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope
Moves us all in turn
There's a rhyme and reason
Finally, ruefully, the dance ended or at least Marcy managed to bring Sasha in to hold them both close. The three girls held one another as the music washed over them.
“I didn’t think… I didn't think you would come.” Marcy whispered into Anne’s chest as she held the two girls close.
“What, and miss dancing with one of the prettiest girls in the world?” Sasha said with mirth in her voice, still thrilled to be holding her two soulmates close. “Never.”
“We’d never miss this, Marcy. Never. “ Anne rested her head on top of Marcy’s as she said this. Never wanting to let the taiwanese girl go.
“We love you too much for that Marbles.” Sasha said firmly.
To the wild outdoors
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager
“But I never said anything!” Marcy said shocked, pleased, overjoyed, and confused all at once. “I was too afraid to say anything, how did you know?”
“Your friend told us, actually.” Anne looked over at Luz dancing with Amity, the two just slowdancing as if they were moving to their own internal song. Anne frowned a bit, a foggy memory trying to poke its way to the surface regarding the hispanic girl but right now she didn't care enough to focus.
“If she hadn’t told us when Prom was, we’d have missed it. Pretty thankful for that.” Sasha said with a nod.
“That’s what she was talking about.” Marcy muttered to herself.
Beats in time with yours
And can you feel the love tonight?
‘I can music, I really can.’  Marcy thought to herself as she held the two girls tightly. She had never felt more loved in her life. She had never felt happier.
Slowly, the three girls detangled in order to keep dancing. Sasha leading Marcy into a slowdance as they swept arounds the floor again. Anne and Sasha would trade off every now and again. And Marcy couldn’t be happier.
It is where we are
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we got this far
“We love you Marcy.” Sasha said, looking her in the eyes.
“Now and forever.” Anne said afterwards, smiling down at the other girl she loved more than anything.
Marcy teared up, but she couldn't fight off the dopey smile on her face.
And can you feel the love tonight
How it's laid to rest?
Sasha tipped her face upwards and caught her in a kiss that stole her breath away.
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best
Anne rubbed her hand down her cheek and leant down to kiss her, and it was wonderful.
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best
“See Amity? I told you meddling in her love life would lead to wonderful results!” Luz said happily as she rested her head on Amity’s shoulder and watched the three girls kiss in front of everyone.
“I’ll admit, this is probably the best outcome.” Amity replied as she slowdanced with her own soulmate. “Just, ah, please ask before the next time you ‘meddle.’”
“... Fine.”

Today was the first productive day ever since returning from Iceland, and I'm so fucking happy with that, so I'm sharing a small atobaoi snippet!
~
A scoff escaped Sasha as she tried not to roll her eye. “Oh, please, Mar Mar. Don’t try to tell me you’ve missed them for more than one second.”
Marcy’s jaw tightened. But her begrudging silence told a story Sasha was all too familiar with.
As the girls had grown older, most slumber parties happened at Anne’s house. And lunches. And game nights. And all the other times they wanted to bask in each other’s presence but couldn’t go to the mall or a Starbucks. The Boonchuy parents regularly joked that they were one day gonna mistake Sasha and Marcy as their own kids, given how often they came over.
There was this silent understanding between Sasha and Marcy. It was unspoken and unheard, yet it bound them together in a way Anne would never grasp. Could never grasp.
The Boonchuy residence was warm, both in the metaphorical sense and the literal one. King Bhumibol guarded the kitchen with a kind smile, his faded portrait surrounded by dozens of framed pictures and beloved childish drawings. The presence of broken coffee rings on the mahogany table was not resented, but celebrated. It was a place of ceaseless love and support.
There was love in Sasha and Marcy’s houses as well. But unlike Anne, they intimately knew the alternative reaction to carelessly forgetting a coaster. The smiles in their pictures on the walls were flimsy things, faked so they could dart out of the camera’s range as quickly as possible.
They lacked unconditional support.
If they hadn’t had each other, they would have thought that maybe, just maybe, they didn’t deserve it.

another writing warm-up! this time featuring sasha, i’m still trying to make sure i can capture her voice well enough ahaha. enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the night passes, Sasha wonders how she had gotten so lucky.
It’s a quiet night, for once, but that doesn’t little to ease the frantic beating of her heart, the way her blood sings for battle. It’s a form of post traumatic stress, Yunan had told her once. The way she felt restless, uneasy in her own skin, itching to get back into the fray and calm the adrenaline keeping her awake and on her feet. Most soldiers have it in some way, Yunan had added, like Sasha had cared enough about her opinion to listen.
In any case, it made it very difficult to sleep at night. Sasha had learned fairly quickly that it was easier - and produced less night terrors - if she just stayed awake until her body physically couldn’t handle it anymore and passed out. Easier said than done, though, when she’s not alone anymore.
Like now, in the cozy tent built for an army but occupied only by three. Sasha sits awake at the entrance, keeping guard - they are still in the middle of a war, even if the biggest threat of them all has been defeated, even if the conflict has faded to just the outlying robots and other factions of newts and toads that remained loyal to the former king - but mainly watching her girls.
When was she allowed to have this? Anne, back from the human world even though she had been okay there, she had been safe there. Marcy, freed from the ghastly creature possessing her, weakened but weathering on. Sasha’s girls, here with her, choosing to stay in her tent where she can watch over them like the protector she was meant to be.
And maybe it pains her a little, watching the way Marcy curls into Anne’s chest, the way they slot together so perfectly, but Sasha shoves it aside. She doesn’t need that, she just needs them, and she can live with that.
“Sasha.”
Sasha jerks upwards, gaze snapping to where both Anne and Marcy are staring at her. Anne had sat up at some point, Marcy still curled against her but blinking sleepily at Sasha, like Anne had woken her up specifically for this.
“Do you really need to keep watch?” Anne asks, when Sasha doesn’t respond to the use of her name. She glances at the space next to her and Marcy on the bedroll, and then back up at Sasha pointedly. “If you can’t sleep, you can at least come provide warmth. It’s cold.”
It’s callous for Anne, who is usually so emotionally open, but the wounds between them haven’t finished healing, and Sasha had already accepted that she might never truly get her Anne back. This, however, is enough, and she crosses her arms, legs drawing into her chest. “I didn’t think-”
“Sasha,” Marcy whines, drawing out the vowels in her name. Her voice is raspy and lilting, a consequence of the blow that had nearly killed her, and even as she lifts her arm to make grabby hands at Sasha, Sasha knows she won’t be able to resist. “Come cuddle?”
How lucky is she, Sasha thinks as she gives in, trudging across the tent to slide in next to Anne, to have this? To have Anne, who hasn’t fully forgiven her yet, an against her, tucking her head against Sasha’s shoulder with a sleepy yawn? And Marcy, alive and healing and warm Marcy, tilt her head from where she’s tucked into Anne’s chest and offer Sasha a sleepy smile, hand sliding to find Sasha’s own?
As Sasha wraps an arm around Anne’s shoulders, her other hand squeezing Marcy’s so tightly Marcy can’t possibly let go, she knows that whatever happens, as long as they’re together, she’s gonna be okay.
1, 6, 11, and 15 + the fic of your choice 😁
The fic I chose for these was “nothing lasts forever, but this is gonna take me down”. (Amphibia. I tried to link it but it didn’t work.) There are other fics I like better, but I haven’t shared them yet because I’m saving them for FemslashFeb.
1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?
Honestly, I just wanted to write some angsty Anne. I had recently finished season one, and I was thinking about writing something about that. The scrunchie thing was just because I found a scrunchie of mine and was playing with it.
6. What makes this fic special or different from all your other fic?
It’s my first amphibia fic! There will me more… >:]
11. What do you like best about this fic?
umm idk! just take this excerpt I’m proud of I guess:
“Anne presses it to her face, wondering if it still smells like its owner. It just smells like fabric. Sasha’s overwhelming scent of strawberry shampoo and mint gum no longer lingers, but Anne still remembers it perfectly.
Sasha was strawberry and mint and stomping high tops and the hum of an electric guitar. Marcy was gummy bears and old books and popping fireworks and the beeps of her favorite video games. Anne doesn’t know what she smells and feels and sounds like, but she knows her friends like the back of her hand. Or she thought she did.”
15. What did you learn from writing this fic?
you can fit lotso angst in 400 words >:]
Thank you for the ask! <3
The man had literally an endless supply of ammo it seemed, since they had to continue to avoid being shot at from the grenade launcher, and he was still too close to the residential areas that Rhodes didn’t want to use his heavy artillery. Also, the police that had been following the assassin were too close. So, he stuck to repulsor blasts, but when they did manage to connect, didn’t seem to harm him that much besides some first or second degree burns. That wasn’t enough to take down the man that was clearly enhanced in some way, judging by the way he’d picked up his motorcycle and threw it at Buck with ease. The man wasn’t fast enough as he was slammed by the 400 pound vehicle, flying back as he tumbled across the ground. Thankfully, there wasn’t anyone or anything around.
“That’s it, I’m putting him down,” Rhodes growls. Buck lifts his head and sees the man’s suit shift as a missile comes out of his shoulder as well as his mini-gun.
Buck wants to stop him, because he didn’t want him to kill anyone regardless if the other was trying to kill them. Before he could, Rhodes is unleashing the missile and then the mini-gun when the assassin dodges the projectile. As he was dodging the bullets, Buck saw his opportunity and stood, flew to where the motorcycle was at. He took hold of a flash grenade JARVIS provided that was apparently part of the armor’s arsenal. He attaches it to the motorcycle and then was amazed as he was able to lift it, and started to swing it around and then let it go in the man’s general direction.
As expected, he was able to dodge, but he wasn’t expecting the flash grenade which exploded close enough to knock him off his feet. This wasn’t the movies so the motorcycle didn’t explode, but the one of handle bars did rip the rest of the way off after the second throw though. Buck is already in the air moments after he throws the motorcycle, so he arrives as the Winter Soldier is starting to get up and kicks him across the face. It knocks the mask off his face, as well as quite a bit of blood from his mouth. Buck winces, but knows he doesn’t have a choice. War Machine is on them in the next moment, knocking into the man with all the strength of a battering ram as he had tries to stand a second time.
“Hold him down!” Buck quickly jumps forward and helps Rhodes, who forces the still struggling man onto his stomach. Rhodes puts a pair of heavy duty handcuffs on him, but it extended from the wrist all the way to his forearm. Their newly secured prisoner struggles but isn’t able to break out of them. “Good luck breaking out of that, buddy. It’s Starkanium.” He pulls his fist back and punches the man in the back of the head, finishing in knocking him out before he looks at Buck. His faceplate lifted as he gives him a grin. “Good work, Evan.”
Buck is breathing heavily, from exertion and the adrenaline coursing through him. His own face plate lifts and he grins back at the other, since that was the single most craziest thing he’d ever done. It was also the first time in a long time he’s worked with someone and felt trusted. “Thanks!” He swallows as he tries to regain his breathing back to normal. “And it’s Buck, by the way. No one calls me Evan anymore.”
Rhodes laughs and claps him on his armored shoulder. “Sure thing, Buck.”
Bobby was very concerned, because Athena had called him a few minutes ago but she couldn’t really get out much from in between her sobs. So, a heavy feeling was quickly building in his chest and choking him; a feeling he was very familiar with. It was the same feeling from when he’d lost Marcy, Robert Jr., and Brooke. So, as soon as he managed to find a parking space —that may or may not end up with him getting towed— he’d jumped out and started to make his way toward the medical center. Before long he was jogging, and then running as that feeling started to build.
Finally, he sees his wife and there were tears running down her beautiful face, and slows to a stop as he reaches her. “What? What’s happened?” Bobby demands, wrapping his arms around her to try and offer some kind of comfort to the woman he loved. It was just, he was too freaked out to properly do so.
“Buck... his...” she tries to get out, thus further confusing Bobby. It was then she pulls away and hands him something that his heart dropping down through his stomach, because he recognizes it. He was holding the charred remains of Buck’s license plate.
Bobby suddenly realizes with a horrifying clarity that he had just lost another son.
- ~ - ~ - ~ - ~
Eddie zipped up the hoodie over his sweaty, battered body with a wince, since he had taken more body hits in order to not get punched in the face. It would be harder to explain away a black eye than hide a bruise to his stomach. And not for the first time, he wondered if he was making a big mistake, and then remembered the winnings that were burning a hole in his pocket and all he could do with it.
Originally, he had gone to the street fights to release his anger and forget about things that he didn’t want to think about. He didn’t want to think of Shannon and how she had left him twice, once by choice and the other unwillingly, and that she would have left him willingly anyways if she hadn’t died. And how pathetic that he was angry at a dead woman, even months after her death.
Then there was almost losing his son in the tsunami, and the one that had almost killed himself searching for him; and found him in the end. Buck. He was the one he didn’t want to think of the most, and the look on his face the last time they’d seen each other and Eddie had spewed hurtful words that weren’t true. And Eddie had never felt more like his father than in that moment, and he wished he could push the words back into his mouth so they could have never caused such a look on Buck’s face.
He was just angry, angrier because he couldn’t see him. Mostly at himself, because if he was being truthful, he had preached about all of them having problems and needing to suck it up, and when he had examined his words he realized he’d sounded like his father. His old man had always drilled into his head that he couldn’t whine about his problems, that he had to be a man.
‘No puedes llorar o te verás como un maricón. Aguántate como un hombre.’
You can’t cry or you’ll look like a faggot. Hold it in like a man.
It was those lessons that always reared their ugly head whenever he tried to deal with his own emotions. He knew it was because of this, the machismo taught to him by his father that his marriage with Shannon had failed. Also, because he hadn’t been there to help her when she needed him. That was also tied with it though, because a man’s job was to provide for the family and the woman to raise the children. It was wrong, of course, but it’s what he’d been taught growing up, and he had let it control him for so long.
Now, he was making the same mistakes all over again with Buck, even if he knew that their relationship wasn’t that of a couple. It wasn’t to say that he was adverse to the idea of them together, but he knew that Buck and Tony were together, and that was one of the reasons he had lashed out. That as well as that sleazy lawyer bringing up Shannon and reminding him all over again where he had failed.
As he got into his new truck, having made enough money to make a sizable down payment on it, Eddie turned on the A/C. His phone started to ring as he pulled out of the parking lot of the run down factory, and frowned when he saw that it was Bobby. He was wondering what he needed and hoped he didn’t need him to come in for an extra shift, since he wasn’t exactly in a position to do so. Besides, he had seen the man earlier at the end of their shift. The grocery run had been the last thing they did before they were finished, having to extend it because of the road rage incident in the parking lot.
“Hey, Bobby,” he greeted as his phone connected to his truck’s bluetooth. That’s another thing he loved about the truck, since he could answer his phone and not have to worry about taking his eyes off the road. “What’s up?”
‘Eddie,’ came the man’s choked voice, making Eddie immediately snap to attention. Something was wrong.
“What’s wrong?” His heart was already beating wildly in his chest, fingers gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were turning white.
‘It’s Buck.’
Eddie felt his heart jump up into his throat and images of the truck bombing, the pulmonary embolism, and the tsunami coming to him so abruptly that he had to pull over before he has an accident. “What happened? Is he alright?” It didn’t even matter that he was mad at him at the moment, because in the end, Buck was Eddie’s best friend and would come running if he needed him.
‘He... his Jeep... you should come to Kaiser Medical Center on Sunset Blvd,’ he finally said, clearly unable to finish what he had wanted to say.
Eddie immediately swiped up on his screen to get his phone to the main menu and brought up his map amp as he found the complete address on there. “I’m on my way,” he told him before ending the call. Then he pulled away from the curve, hearing as someone blared their horn behind him as they had to stop when he pulled into traffic so suddenly. Eddie didn’t pay them any mind and floored the gas pedal, the feeling of dread building more and more the longer it took to get to where he needed to go.
When he was unable to get through due to emergency vehicles, he felt his heart stop in dread. “Buck,” he whispered, before he’s out of his truck and running toward the scene. When he gets to the police line, he can’t see much besides the red lights and black smoke of something manmade on fire, like a building... or a vehicle.
Eddie is suddenly under the police line before he knows what he’s doing as Bobby’s words echo in his ears. ‘It’s Buck. He... his Jeep...’ And also the last thing he said to him in that grocery store. The words that he didn’t mean, but had said them anyways.
‘Because you’re exhausting! We all have our own problems, but you don’t see us whining about it. No, somehow, we just manage to suck it up. Why can’t you?’ And Eddie hadn’t meant them, not really, he was just mad. Eddie was mad that he couldn’t speak to him, that Christopher was having nightmares and calling for Buck, and the man couldn’t contact them.
In that moment, none of that matters, and all he’s thinking and praying, is that Buck is alright. That if that’s his Jeep burning, then he isn’t inside of it. Because if he’s... If Buck’s...
He’s stopped by some officers as they try to hold him back. Eddie only doesn’t swing at them because he’s so desperate to get through and make sure Buck is okay. Then he hears a voice that makes him stop and he sees it’s Athena, and she saves him from getting arrested, again.
“Is it Buck’s Jeep?” he demands of her. Normally he wouldn’t ever speak to the older woman like that, but he needs to know. Eddie wants her to tell him that it isn’t Buck, and that he’s just being irrational right then. She shatters his world with her next words.
“Yes, it’s Buck’s Jeep.”
A strangled sob escapes him and she’s suddenly hugging him, and he’s never ever hugged or even touched Athena besides a brief pat on the shoulder. However, in that moment her arms are the only thing holding Eddie together.
- ~ - ~ - ~ - ~
Buck flight back toward Kaiser is much better than when he left it. He thinks he’s getting the hang of the suit, even if he didn’t really think it was a great idea. After all, even if JARVIS had said that Tony had built the suit for him, it couldn’t really be for him... surely not to keep. Buck can’t really think that he will. That’s just crazy.
He sees mayhem when he flies over the medical center, the lights of police and other medical personnel and he knows that he’ll have to answer for some of it. Rhodes had told him not to worry about it, since it was only a few damaged cars and a few minor injuries, but luckily no one died. He told Buck before leaving to secure the prisoner, that after the attack in New York, Tony had created the Stark Relief Foundation and that the destruction caused today would be covered by the Foundation.
Buck had of course heard about it but the day had been wild that he hadn’t really been thinking of that at the time. He also really hoped that meant he’d get his Jeep as well, since he had just gotten it back from the shop after the tsunami, and he needed his Jeep. It wasn’t the same one that his sister had given him, which had quit on him when he was six months into his probationary year.
The Jeep he had brought afterwards wasn’t the latest model, because he hadn’t been rich or anything. All that mattered was that it was a Jeep and he’d managed to keep the word JEEP from the one Maddie had given him and had it put on the dash. It and a few other things he had added to his new one, so it wouldn’t feel that much different. The damage had been extensive after the tsunami, but nothing that couldn’t be repaired, especially after the water had receded and the vehicle recovered. So, he hoped it could be recovered again this time.
Although as he flew over the parking lot and saw the remains of the Jeep, or what he assumed was the Jeep after being hit by the projectile from the grenade launcher, he was sure it wasn’t recoverable. He was only thankful that he hadn’t left his wallet in the middle console as he normally did when he drove. Then again, he had been trying to keep Tony awake on the way to Kaiser, so he hadn’t thought to pull his wallet out of his pocket.
His phone, however, had been in the console since his maps app had been guiding him to the medical center and had forgotten to grab it when Rhodes and the Rescue armor had arrived. So, it had likely been destroyed, and he wouldn’t be able to call anyone for a ride, or even order an Uber or a Lyft. There was no way he could take the suit back to his apartment, since his neighbors were still asking him about Iron Man, or Tony Stark, as if they weren’t the same person.
He could just imagine the gossip if he stepped out of a suit of armor of his own. Oh boy.
Buck was thinking about landing the suit on the roof where no one would see him leave it to check on Tony, but heard JARVIS’s distinct voice suddenly. ‘Mr. Buckley, there appear to be several police officer’s trying to get your attention from down below.’
“Shit... uh, what do I do? Should I go down there, J?”
‘It does seem to be a good idea to speak with the officers about what Colonel Rhodes has told you, Mr. Buckley. Although, if I may suggest, it would probably be better to keep the faceplate down. The Rescue Protocol was only a last resort, and revealing your face would paint a target on your back. It’s prudent to stay off HYDRA’s radar for now.’
Buck inhaled and nodded. “Y-yeah, I think I can do that.” He started to pilot down, now a bit more confident that he can land now without causing anymore property damage. It’s a bit rough but not too bad, and two police officers are suddenly there, and he realizes that one of the has the Captain’s rank and the other is none other than the Chief of Police.
“Iron Man?” the Chief asks, uncertain.
Buck tried to will his voice not to shake as he opened his mouth to answer. “No, I’m not Iron Man,” he told him, surprised when his voice came out warbled like Tony’s does when he speaks without lifting the faceplate. He saw them wait for him to identify himself and he wasn’t sure what to say, and latched onto what JARVIS had called the armor. “I’m Rescue.”
He saw the reporters being kept back by the police lines snap pictures, their flashes lighting up the night along with the lights of first responders. Buck was a bit thrown that their cameras were aimed in his direction, but then again, he guessed he could understand. He did have on armor like Tony, and of course they wanted to know who he was. “Can you tell us what happened here, Rescue?”
“Yes, of course,” he said, clearing his throat and was glad that wasn’t heard since he didn’t want all of them to know how nervous he was. He was surprised as words started to appear on the HUD, and realized that JARVIS wanted him to read it. So, that’s what he did after he took a deep breath to calm his nerves. “At proximately 5:47pm, Iron Man was attacked in a safe house by an assailant that has yet to be identified.” He wondered why the AI didn’t want him to say that it was the Winter Soldier. He wasn’t sure, but he wasn’t about to offer it up and decided to stick to what JARVIS had written for him.
“He managed to escape in a suit of armor that only had flight capabilities and met up with a friend, who took him here for medical treatment. However, his attacker followed him here and proceeded to attack myself and War Machine, who had arrived to offer backup.” He noticed that the ‘statement’ didn’t mention Buck’s name, which was just as well. “We left the area to prevent anymore destruction of the surrounding area, as well as the medical center. The assailant followed us from the ground and managed to cause destruction on a residential home. I was able to rescue the people trapped inside, who were a married couple and their daughter. Afterwards, War Machine and I were able to finally restrain our attacker. War Machine has gone ahead to secure the prisoner while I came back to see to Iron Man. The Stark Relief Foundation has already been informed of this incident and will be on both scenes within the hour.”
“So, Iron Man is inside the medical center receiving treatment at the moment?” the Chief of Police asked. Buck couldn’t remember the man’s name for the life of him, and JARVIS wasn’t giving him anymore information. He nodded instead of speaking again. “Then we shall provide a protection detail for him,” the man told him.
Buck refrained from breathing in relief and turned away from them. He hadn’t taken more than a step when he heard a shout and paused when he recognized the voice. Buck turned and saw three figures heading toward him through the police line; Athena, Bobby and Eddie. He froze, since he hadn’t expected them to be there. Also, he couldn’t really greet them as if he knew them, since there were too many cameras still pointed at them. He also wouldn’t put it past the news reporters to have microphones pointed toward him to try and capture something.
“Yes?” he said, his head tilted down when he saw Athena’s badge attached to her belt. “May I help you, officer?”
“I’m Sergeant Athena Grant, and the friend that helped Iron Man is also a friend of ours. We found the remains of his license plate and we want to make sure he’s uninjured.”
Eddie and Bobby looked like they were really trying not to interrupt her, the former’s hands clenched into fists at his sides. It was hard to make out the expression on his face due to the darkness, but Buck could imagine he was angry. “Sergeant Grant, this isn’t the place to discus these things,” he told her, trying to keep his tone neutral. Buck did not want them to know it was him and risk them revealing his identity. “I’m sure Dr. Stark will get in contact with you about... your friend as soon as he can.”
Buck’s gaze turned toward Eddie as he jerked forward, looking like he wanted to get into his face if not for the hand that Bobby had put on his shoulder to hold him back. “Where is he?!”
He looked at his best friend, not sure if he could call him that after everything that had happened, and wanted to say something. Buck wanted to wipe the angry expression he could see due to the suit, since JARVIS had turned on the night-vision. “I have nothing further to say.”
Buck turned and blasted off, leaving Eddie, Athena and Bobby behind.-
The Year I Thought I Wasted
Part 1: Jukebox Fics
Tumblr media
It seems like everyone is doing one kind of list or another to sum up 2020. Truthfully, for me, 2020 was mostly a fever dream I’d like to forget. Job loss, pandemic, serious health issues in the family, depression, anxiety...but in the midst of it all I found a way to escape, in the form of writing. Which eventually led to podficcing.
It may seem like a small thing, or a silly thing. There are still a lot of people out there who unfairly malign fan fiction. But for me, it gave me something to look forward to, a way for me to feel productive during the times when I felt hopelessly useless. And it brought me a community and friends that I absolutely cherish, even though I’ve never met them in person.
So, because I love lists, and I think it would be very helpful for me to see my accomplishment in a year when I constantly felt like I had nothing to contribute.
I’m going to do this in parts. Part 1 is a listing of all of my Jukebox Prompt Fills.
Here we go!!
Flutter - Patrick thinks about the way David always flutters his hands over Patrick.
Published: 2020-01-10 Words: 130 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
Fiscal...Whatever - David is the one who comes up with a really reasonable budget for the wedding.
Published: 2020-01-18 Completed: 2020-01-27 Words: 1,704 Chapters: 2/2 Rated: E
Surprisingly Soft - Prompt fill for the_hodag: something with Ronnie & Patrick at the reception.
Published: 2020-04-11 Words: 490 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
Three Spoons - Prompt fill for goodmorninglovelies: David, Patrick and Stevie cuddle together.
Published: 2020-04-11 Words: 311 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
This is Nice - David has climbed into Patrick's lap countless times. It’s his safe space, completely enveloped in the arms of his person. Sure, sometimes David feels a little ridiculous, like Gulliver curling up in the lap of a Lilliputian. But Patrick doesn’t seem to mind, so neither does David.
Published: 2020-05-30 Words: 627 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
More fics below the cut!!
Grass Stains - David mows the lawn. And Patrick loses his fucking mind. That’s it. That’s the entire story.
Published: 2020-05-23 Completed: 2020-06-04 Words: 4,125 Chapters: 2/2 Rated: E
Can’t Argue With That - Patrick and Ronnie agree to say one nice thing to one another.
Published: 2020-06-05 Words: 602 Chapters:1/1 Rated: G
It’s Okay. It’s Just His Business Partner - Patrick startles. He hadn’t been that obvious had he? Is it weird to gaze longingly at your business partner over a small, intimate table in a small, intimate restaurant, with mood lighting and soft music playing in the background, in an atmosphere that David himself had called “cozy”?
Published: 2020-06-03 Completed: 2020-06-09 Words: 3,413 Chapters: 3/3 Rated: T
What’s Cookin’, Good Lookin’? - “In here!” David’s voice called out from the direction of the kitchen. Patrick frowned and braced himself. The thought of David alone in the kitchen all day was both terrifying and adorable. He frequently spent his days off cooking things for Patrick, deep diving on Pinterest for recipes he thought would make Patrick’s mouth water. And Patrick appreciated the thought, he really did. It was just that sometimes, after a day spent in the kitchen, all that David had to show for his efforts was the thought. And some kind of lumpy, burnt thing that was supposedly a pot roast or maybe banana bread.
Published: 2020-06-14 Words: 1,435 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: E
Nowhere To Go But Up - “I just...I miss you,” David said, ducking his head to stare at the coffee cup in his hand. “I’m right here, David,” Patrick said, unable to hold back a slight note of annoyance from his voice.“Are you, though?”
Published: 2020-07-01 Words: 2,679 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: T
Knock, Knock! - When something is so exciting, so important, that he just has to share, those are the times that boundaries get just the tiniest bit...overlooked. Or: The first time Ray walks in on David & Patrick in bed.
Published: 2020-07-06 Words: 584 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: T
More Than Fine - Patrick sees David before 3.08 and is so overwhelmed he tries to get Ray to take the appointment for him.
Published: 2020-07-24 Words: 270 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
No Substitutions - From the_hodag’s prompt: Patrick has a ukulele. David is horrified.
Published: 2020-08-06 Words: 400 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
Every Good Thing - Another jukebox prompt: the first time david turns down buying something, maybe a nice sweater on ebay, because he deems it too expensive.
Published: 2020-08-07 Words: 750 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
A Little Bit (Too Much) Alexis - David comes home to a little more than he expected.
Published: 2020-08-10 Words: 280 Chapters:1/1 Rated: G
Not On My Watch - A discordant honk breaks the tranquility, and David sees his nigh unflappable husband turn suddenly...well, flappable.
Published: 2020-08-17 Words: 774 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: G
Underneath Your Clothes - David asks if he can draw Patrick nude. Patrick agrees and has a lot of feelings about it.
Published: 2020-08-20 Words: 953 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: T
Comparing Notes - Stevie snorts and sputters, covering her mouth with her hand. “Asshole! You made beer come out my nose.” Patrick may be drunk (he’s not, but whatever), but he still has manners. He grabs a handful of tissues from the box on the table and hands them to Stevie. She glares at him from over the fistful of tissues.
Published: 2020-08-20 Words: 900 Chapters:1/1 Rated: T
Hair: A Love Story - When David was 19, Belinda had said she liked a man with a little hair on his chest. Until she’d seen David’s. Then she’d said it was “a bit much” and it just “didn’t do anything” for her. That was the first time David subjected himself to a full body wax. It turned out, she hadn’t liked him hairless either.
Published: 2020-08-26 Words: 675 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: T
The First Cut is the Deepest - From DelphinaBoswell’s prompt: What if Patrick doesn't go to the Barbecue, but Rachel does? And she and David discover their connection to Patrick.
Published: 2020-09-03 Words: 5,000 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: T
Talk Dirty(ish) To Me - Prompt from Januarium: Patrick practices dirty talk out loud to get comfortable saying things in front of David.
Published: 2020-09-03 Words: 946 Chapters: 1/1 Rated: M
Pavlova - From spiffymittens’ amazing prompt: David affirms the fuck out of a litte boy trick or treater dressed as a princess or other female character and makes his whole night.
Published: 2020-10-15 Words: 978 Chapters: 1/1 Rated:  G
Movember Blues - Patrick grows a beard for Movember. He and David have differing opinions on the result.
Ask Me No Questions, I’ll Tell You No Lies - Marcy overhears Patrick and David having a disagreement. She doesn’t want to get involved, but sometimes her son’s communication issues are too much for her to overlook.
Okay, so shout-outs to the anon (or maybe multiple anons) who told me to read Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook. I freaking loved it! I’m also glad I read it at this point and didn’t wait until after the whole series. It makes such a good companion piece to the Stakes mini-series.
The Enchiridion was...not quite as exciting, but still had a couple of neat tidbits. Simon’s notes are nice. The Wizard section was fairly interesting. Some nice lore and world-building. I kind of wish the Bestiarum Vocabulum section had a bit more to it. And I must admit I was slightly disappointed that the Enchiridion did not, in fact, explicitly state that you should not strike a foe who’s raised their bottom to the sky. The Scrapbook is so in line with the mini-series; it would’ve been nice if the Enchiridion could’ve incorporated that as a little nod. They cover their bases with the explanation that there are multiple editions and even strongly imply that Finn’s was an earlier edition, but it still would’ve been neat.
A far more glaring omission is the Empress. Hierophant and the Vampire King are both mentioned in the Scrapbook, but the Empress isn’t. She knew both Marceline and Simon. Marcy had her power of invisibility so she must have staked and absorbed her at some point. My best guess is that the Empress enthralled Simon at a point when Simon was still writing the notes and it was on one of the pages he pulled out before he left. Or maybe Marceline just didn’t write it down for some reason. Or the writers just dropped the ball and didn’t catch this little continuity hiccup.
Those are my general thoughts. I’m also doing the whole images of my some of my favorite stuff interspersed with my reactions and commentary thing, but since this is gonna be an extra-extra long post, I’ve decided to actually use a read more cut this time.
Tumblr media
Marcy and Bonnie talking about Simon in the margins. Give me some of that in the show.
Tumblr media
This is the kind of lore development I like to learn about.
Tumblr media
Does that mean the writers have thoughts about more Shoko development in future episodes and didn’t want to burn up their ideas in the side material?
Tumblr media
International crisis. I mean that was more-or-less implied by the irradiated world, but I like learning more info. Also, he’s already talking about going North. It fits that they paired this with the Scrapbook. The notes follow through for tracking Simon’s progression into madness.
Tumblr media
Sure. Again, kind of vaguely implied already by the series, but nice to know.
Tumblr media
Now all I can think of is “long ago the four nations lived together in harmony...” Thanks to whoever sent that ask.
Tumblr media
I may wanna get these on buttons or patches for my coat to go with the Avatar symbols.
Tumblr media
Not sure what to make of this. I feel like it’s some kind of lore for the show. Maybe something to do with Prismo?
Tumblr media
Hoo boy. Here we go. The feels train is pulling into the station.
Tumblr media
This relationship is just so moving. I’m a sucker for found families.
Tumblr media
More world building. Bring it on.
Tumblr media
Even if Simon’s story hadn’t been tied to Marcy’s, it would still be one of the most interesting parts of the show. And that first paragraph feels like something that should’ve come up in the show by now. They really haven’t explained quite enough about Betty for my liking. Learning that she has a history of studying these kinds of things helps clarify why she’s so willing and able to take the approach she’s been taking.
Tumblr media
After Bonnie and Neddy, I can only assume that this is the Mother Gum in its early days.
Tumblr media
Mmhm. Sure. Matter’s more pliable. I can dig it.
The vibrational talk reminded of that bag of miniature people that Magic Man planted on Finn that one time. And he had to shake them to speak to them on their vibrational plane or whatever. I wonder if that’s ever gonna come back with some kind of added significance.
Tumblr media
Reminds me of when Life kissed Death.
Tumblr media
Wonder if that was a deliberate nod or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This. Relationship.
Tumblr media
Again, I’m glad I read this now. The thing I couldn’t quite puzzle out after Stakes was where Hunson Abadeer fit into things. This is filling in some of the blanks quite nicely.
Tumblr media
You know, after seven seasons of Grob Gob Glob Grod, it was a little jarring to actually see the word “God” here. I’ve got a pretty good recall for character voices, so I could basically hear Tom Kenny saying it as I read it. Of course it makes sense that Simon would have God in his vernacular. Somehow, after the phrase being conspicuously absent for so long, it seems to punch up the impact.
Tumblr media
She celebrates her birthday around the time Simon found her! This precious child!
Tumblr media
Oh, I can hear it in her voice. My heart!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I don’t think I’ll ever see him again. Ever.”
There’s no mention of her encountering him again in the scrapbook. I’ve already mentioned the Empress, conspicuous in her absence. And she alludes to other meet-ups in the episode “I Remember You.” I can only assume those meetings take place after the last page of the scrapbook.
I’d love to know more though. I’d love to see her first discovering that Simon’s still alive, but completely insane now. And I’d love to know how we get from this:
Tumblr media
To this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s so much of the story that’s still untold.
Tumblr media
That moment in Bad Little Boy where Ice King was like “Gob, I’m sorry I doubted your power” kind of takes on a new dimension when you think about how Simon’s from a different time.
Tumblr media
“I hope these bring you comfort now that I’m gone, and remind you that you are loved.”
Just fuck me up, why don’t you?
Tumblr media
“I want to feel her holding me in her arms and hugging me again like that.”
JUST FUCK ME UP, WHY DON’T YOU?
Again, this ties in so well with the Stakes mini-series. This was exactly the right time to read this for maximum emotional resonance.
Tumblr media
Oh, Marcy, you poor, sweet, confused, little angel.
Tumblr media
Well, I wanted to know where Hunson fit into things. Should’ve known it would be bad times.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I can kind of relate to not having a great father but still wondering how much of who you are is from him.
Tumblr media
Deep. Especially at her age. Simon did say she was smart. And of course she had to grow up fast, given that world was a wreck.
Tumblr media
“He didn’t deserve what happened to him.
I concur.
Tumblr media
I can also kind of relate to giving your not-so-great dad another chance and getting burned again. I suppose it’s not really a shock that I gravitate toward characters who have poor relationships with their fathers.
Tumblr media
I never really gave any thought to how difficult it would’ve been to even find fries at that time. And the fact that it was the first time he stole something specifically from her also gives it a little more weight. Like I’ve said before, it’s hard to tell when something’s just a throwaway gag and when something’s gonna come back later with added perspective and significance. I have to wonder how much they thought about in advance and how much is just them looking back and saying “we can expand on that.”
Tumblr media
There must be at least some of it that they knew they wanted to develop even from the very early stages.
It’s interesting to figure out where Hunson comes into the picture, but I still don’t fully understand all of it. Primarily: How could a human woman see enough merit in Hunson Abadeer that she would want to sleep with him? What stopped him from immediately sucking out her soul? Why was he even on Earth shortly before or during the Great Mushroom War? There’s still a lot of room to grow on here.
Tumblr media
Oh, honey, you’re the most interesting person in this universe.
Tumblr media
“I still hope for a living friend.”
I was kind of hoping I might get the story of how she met Bonnibel, but I guess they’re saving that for the show. Must be after the events in the scrapbook.
Tumblr media
Gimme all the lore. And Marcy wandering through an abandoned sunken mall full of skeletons shouting for Simon is an absolutely heartbreaking thought.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This angel child deserves nothing but happiness.
Tumblr media
THIS. RELATIONSHIP.
Tumblr media
She found a puppy! Ahhh! They’re so precious!
Tumblr media
Yas, Queen!
Tumblr media
This poor girl can just never catch a break.
Tumblr media
This backstory is fantastic.
Tumblr media
RIP, my dude.
Tumblr media
Rise, Marcy the Vampire Slayer.
Tumblr media
Let’s go!
Tumblr media
Oh no, what’s wrong with Schwabl?
Tumblr media
Marcy defending the last of the life on Earth against the scourge of the vampires. I’d seriously watch a whole series of this.
Tumblr media
“Staking vampires, protecting the last remaining humans. It felt like I was protecting you. It was the only thing that brought me happiness during those years.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fascinating.
Tumblr media
It’s rough watching a character who’s so good go through so much pain.
Tumblr media
No, not the puppy!
Tumblr media
Save the puppy!
Also, that time she almost went feral on Jake was probably really terrible for her because it would have stirred up these memories.
Tumblr media
Another good reason to pair the Enchiridion - and particularly Simon’s notes - with this. Who would’ve thought that Marcy owned it for a time?
Tumblr media
Thank goodness something turned out okay in all of this.
Tumblr media
Wild. So is this Simon and the Crown, or some other force causing it? Does it affect the whole planet, or just the continent Marcy’s on? What about all the humans who were leaving on the boat? Can they survive an ice age? Is it a full “400 really boring years” like in Finn’s wish world? Longer? Shorter? This side material raises at least as many questions as it answers.
Tumblr media
So Simon found the Enchiridion and took notes on it for a while before finally sending it to a museum in Scandinavia just was the international crisis that would become known as the Great Mushroom War was ramping up. Then some wizards found it. Then Marcy found the wizards and took it from them. Now the Enchiridion is with Marcy in hibernation. Then somehow it ends up with a minotaur later and Bubblegum is the one who tells Finn where to get it. There’s another chapter in between there and I feel like it involves both Marceline and Bubblegum. Marcy’s life after the ice age could probably fill another book or two.
Tumblr media
Precious angel child.
Tumblr media
Oh snap, it’s actually written by the people who play Marceline and Hunson.
That was a trip and a half to read. I love the backstory and world building so much. Even in the early episodes I suspected that there must be some kind of substance to this universe for the show to go on for as long as it did. Based on the early stuff though I had lowered my expectations and never imagined that this universe would gain so much depth, complexity, and (above all else) tragedy.
Marceline seems so carefree, but she’s been through SO. MUCH. Most of it while she was still a small child. The people of Ooo are absolutely blessed to have someone like Marceline in their world. And they’re also quite fortunate that her trauma didn’t push her to the full-on dark side. Even after a thousand years of so much confusion and loss, however chaotic she may get, she still has such a good heart.
And wow does reading this ever reinforce my desire for them to figure out a way to save Simon. “He didn’t deserve what happened to him” is so right. Although if it hadn’t happened to him, he never would’ve been able to protect Marcy. He probably would’ve died in the Great Mushroom War like almost everyone else, and Betty would’ve died too. Maybe you could chalk it up to Marcy’s mother’s last prayer being answered or the universe working in mysterious ways or possibly even retrocausality that Simon was able to survive and care for Marcy. Even so, I’m about four seasons beyond ready for the heroes and protagonists to help this poor old man get back the sanity that was stolen from him.
I feel like Finn’s the key somehow. The Crown seems to be possessed by a ghost or spirit. Gunther’s unfinished ghostly business was Evergreen and Evergreen’s unfinished ghostly business was the Catalyst Comet and Finn’s the reincarnation of the Catalyst Comet and all of that’s tied up with the Ice Crown. It seems like there’s some kind of puzzle taking shape there. Betty’s studying psychometric energy, magic, and Glob’s freaking helmet...Glob who was last seen facing off against, once again, the Catalyst Comet.
And just from the Doylist perspective, the writers have been spinning out this tragic tale of Simon Petrikov for a long time and it would be emotionally unsatisfying if they never save this poor man’s mind. I’m worried they might make me wait until the end of the show to fully resolve it though. I was worried for a while that getting his mind back would kill him, but after the events of the episode “Betty” I don’t expect them to take that route.
Simon and Marcy are such tragic characters and I feel for them both. I love learning more about them, even when most of what I learn breaks my heart. The two of them embody so much of what gives this universe its heart and brings it to life.
A War Against Climate Science, Waged by Washington’s Rank and File
What would you do if you were a university professor who received a federal grant that paid for researching how meeting the Paris Agreement’s carbon reduction targets would affect extreme weather events, and prior to publication the Energy Department told you to either: (1) remove “red flag words” like Paris Agreement and acknowledge the agency funding, or (2) keep them and not mention the grant that funded your research? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Efforts to undermine climate change science in the federal government, once orchestrated largely by President Trump’s political appointees, are now increasingly driven by midlevel managers trying to protect their jobs and budgets and wary of the scrutiny of senior officials, according to interviews and newly revealed reports and surveys.
A case in point: When John Crusius, a research chemist at the United States Geological Survey, published an academic paper on natural solutions to climate change in April, his government affiliation never appeared on it. It couldn’t.
Publication of his study, after a month’s delay, was conditioned by his employer on Dr. Crusius not associating his research with the federal government.
“There is no doubt in my mind that my paper was denied government approval because it had to do with efforts to mitigate climate change,” Dr. Crusius said, making clear he also was speaking in his personal capacity because the agency required him to so. “If I were a seismologist and had written an analogous paper about reducing seismic risk, I’m sure the paper would have sailed through.”
Government experts said they have been surprised at the speed with which federal workers have internalized President Trump’s antagonism for climate science, and called the new landscape dangerous.
“If top-level administrators issued a really clear public directive, there would be an uproar and a pushback, and it would be easier to combat,” said Lauren Kurtz, executive director of the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund, which supports scientists. “This is a lot harder to fight.”
An inspector general’s report at the Environmental Protection Agency made public in May found that almost 400 employees surveyed in 2018 believed a manager had interfered with or suppressed the release of scientific information, but they never reported the violations. A separate Union of Concerned Scientists survey in 2018 of more than 63,000 federal employees across 16 agencies identified the E.P.A. and Department of Interior as having the least trustworthy leadership in matters of scientific integrity.
Findings published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE in April on a subset of those agencies found that 631 workers agreed or strongly agreed that they had been asked to omit the phrase “climate change” from their work. In the same paper, 703 employees said they avoided working on climate change or using the phrase.
“They’re doing it because they’re scared,” said Maria Caffrey, a former geography specialist at the National Park Service who battled managers as they tried to delete humanity’s role in climate change from a recent report on sea-level rise. “These are all people who went to the March for Science rallies, but then they got into the office on Monday and completely rolled over.”
Examples are plentiful, not all of them new. But increasingly, scientists are willing to speak out.
On April 24, 2017, Noah Diffenbaugh, a climate scientist at Stanford University, published a study showing the links between extreme weather events and climate change. Since the research was funded in part by Obama-era Energy Department grants that included more than $1.3 million for Dr. Diffenbaugh’s project, he credited the agency in the paper’s acknowledgments.
On April 25, emails show, the researchers were told that acknowledgment of Energy Department support would require additional review.
“It was alarming to receive this email because it was so far outside of our normal practice as a scientific community,” Dr. Diffenbaugh said.
Full disclosure of funding, he noted, is required by most scientific journals and by the university.
The emails said managers in the Energy Department’s biological and environmental research program, known as B.E.R., felt their program was “under attack internally” and were worried about certain terms, including “extreme event attribution,” which refers to how much a given weather event can be linked to global warming.
They also worried about references in Dr. Diffenbaugh’s research paper to terms like the Clean Power Plan, an Obama-era regulation on coal-fired power plants; the social cost of carbon, a principle that puts a price on climate-warming carbon dioxide emissions; and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Citing those three subject areas, a research supervisor wrote to Dr. Diffenbaugh six days after his study was published, “Was trying not to put too much of this in writing, but the concern here is avoiding the impression that B.E.R. is supporting research directly focused on policy evaluation.”
Those were exactly the subjects of Dr. Diffenbaugh’s federally funded research.
A subsequent paper examined how meeting the Paris Agreement’s carbon reduction targets would affect extreme weather events. When Dr. Diffenbaugh submitted it for approval, he was told Energy Department officials felt it was “solid on the science” but contained “red flag words” like Paris Agreement, emails show.
His choice was to either remove those phrases and acknowledge the agency funding, or keep them and not mention the grant.
Dr. Diffenbaugh and Stanford decided that the research should not be changed and would be published with the so-called red-flag words and the disclosure of funding sources. Department officials later notified the project leaders that funding would be cut in half. Dr. Diffenbaugh’s project was zeroed out.
Jess Szymanski, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy, said in a statement: “There is no Department of Energy policy banning the mention of ‘climate change’ or ‘Paris Agreement,’ nor is there department guidance to withhold funding for projects including this language. To allege so is false.”
Then there is the case of Marcy Rockman. Until she resigned from the Park Service in November 2018, Dr. Rockman served for seven years as a climate change adaptation coordinator; five of those years were spent developing a strategy to protect cultural resources from climate change. But when the strategy was issued in late January 2017, her supervisors decided to drop plans to send copies to each national park.
“There was no appetite for any of my management chain to write a memo that would have their signature on it that said, ‘I am distributing the climate change strategy,’” she said.
The European Association of Archaeologists took notice anyway and invited Dr. Rockman to present her work in the Netherlands. Her boss approved the trip, and then retired.
But several months later, Dr. Rockman said, she was informed that she needed to reapply for approval. Her supervisors suggested she play down climate change. Then the trip was denied.
“I was responsible for making and carrying out decisions that no one above me wanted to make,” she said.
The Department of Interior declined to comment on Dr. Rockman’s case, citing pending litigation.
Patrick Gonzalez, the principal climate change scientist at the National Park Service, requested policy approval in March 2018 to publish a paper based on analysis of more than a century of climate data across 417 national parks.
His supervisor did not get past the opening sentence: “Anthropogenic climate change is altering ecological and human systems globally.”
“Without reading any more of the manuscript, she said, ‘I’m going to have to ask you to change that,’” Dr. Gonzalez recalled. He said in an interview that he was speaking in his own capacity and not on behalf of the federal government.
Emails and other documents show that Dr. Gonzalez then approached John Dennis, the agency’s deputy chief scientist, to protest. Dr. Dennis encouraged compromise.
Documents show that Dr. Dennis highlighted the phrase “anthropogenic,” or human-caused. “Is this word here necessary to the basic scientific thesis of the paper — which I interpret to be ‘climate change is revealed already to have had major impacts to parks?’” he asked.
“From a policy standpoint, it might be too strong for a DOI person to say ‘anthropogenic climate change,’” Dr. Dennis wrote, suggesting instead “carbon dioxide driven climate change.”
Dr. Gonzalez refused to make the change and, after three months, the agency backed down. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Research Letters in September 2018, without changes.
Conner Swanson, an Interior Department spokesman, said Dr. Gonzalez’s research was about “adaptation to climate change rather than cause of climate change and, as a result, the integrity of the science did not require discussing the cause of climate change in a situation where such use could divert attention from the scientific findings of the article.”
That same summer, the Park Service tried to delete every mention of humanity’s role in climate change in a report on sea level rise. Its lead author, Dr. Caffrey, objected. It was released after more than a year’s delay without the attempted edits. Dr. Caffrey, however, said she was then demoted before her position was eliminated.
Dr. Gonzalez said he was taking a risk telling his story. But, he said, “I aim to serve as a positive example of standing strongly for science.”
Mr. Swanson said that since Mr. Trump took office, the Interior Department had “improved scientific integrity by following the law, using the best available science and relying on the expertise of our professional career staff.”
Trump administration officials have noted that in almost all of these cases, the science was ultimately published.
But scientists said that came at a cost. Dr. Crusius was given informal approval in the summer of 2019 to publish research in the well-regarded journal Earth’s Future, which is published by the American Geophysical Union. Then, in September, after the paper had gone through a round of peer review, his employer, the U.S. Geological Survey, reversed course and opposed publication.
“I appealed this decision, and I was allowed to publish this as a private citizen,” he said.
Dr. Crusius said the research, on the environmental benefits and risks of storing carbon in trees, soil, ocean and wetlands to delay climate impacts, was important because climate change is a problem the government ultimately will need solid science to confront.
“We need all the help we can get, including from both federal and academic scientists,” he said.
The U.S.G.S. denied that the paper was not approved because it dealt with climate change.
Lawmakers and others who work with scientists said publication of the research did not diminish the hurdles thrown in the way, which served to signal that writing about politically disfavored topics comes at a personal price.
At least one case predates the Trump administration. Danny Cullenward, a Stanford Law School lecturer, said the Energy Department tried in 2015 to distance itself from his research, which showed the United States could not meet its Paris Agreement goals with the policies that President Barack Obama was pushing.
It is now widely acknowledged those policies most likely would not have cut emissions enough to meet those goals. But at the time, the Obama administration was working to persuade global leaders that the president’s plans would get the country substantially toward that goal.
Dr. Cullenward, then a research fellow working with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said a lab adviser initially told him the research could not be released before the Paris Agreement talks. After he objected, he was told the study would require further review.
“I interpreted that to be, ‘We’re going to stick this thing in a black hole,’” Dr. Cullenward said. He resigned his affiliation with the lab.
John German, a spokesman for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said Dr. Cullenward had been free to publish his work on his own but that Energy Department research must meet strict peer review standards that had not yet occurred.
Dr. Cullenward said his experience did not compare with the scale of violations in the Trump administration. But, he said, a pro-climate change president would not automatically make scientists’ work secure.
“We can’t get partisan about what scientific integrity means,” he said.
