Okay but what if Melinda referred to Dick as her baby brother and Dick just started retching lmao.

"Listen. I'm seven years older than my first little brother and seventeen years older than my youngest brother. I've always been the big brother and always will be. I'm nobody's baby," Dick hisses.

"You're our baby," Bruce and Alfred chime in.

"And you're our baby girl," the Titans say.

Dick whirls around and jabs his finger at all of them. "Would you guys shut the fuck up?"

Okay, I don’t know how many people are going to see this but I really want to talk about this. I want to start out by saying that I love comics, and normally I try to keep this blog positive, but Tom Taylor’s writing in the current Nightwing and Titans run has really been bugging me.

I know a lot of people on this site have already talked about this, but I want to discuss why I think his writing is poor and harmful to the character.

This is a page from Batman Year 3, where Dick Grayson finds out the man who killed his parents was let out of jail:

At this point, Alfred had been trying to get the chance to tell Dick until he saw it on the computer himself. It’s one line of dialogue, but you can feel the shock and the panic the moment he finds out. He’s scared. Alfred isn’t even on the page and you can feel how his heart goes out to Dick. There’s so much tension and emotion in this panel, and the fact that Zucco was let out of jail was never said, the reader just knows based on the context and character reactions.

Compare this to the same incident in Nightwing #99:

There’s nothing. There’s no emotion, no substance, no soul, no heart. Reading this is like watching to actors just read lines off of a page. Dick barely even has a reaction, the man who murdered his parents was let out of jail and he’s making quips. I feel absolutely nothing looking at this page, and that’s a problem. Storytelling is supposed to get the reader to feel like they are a part of the story, the audience should feel what the character is feeling, or at least be able to tell when the character is feeling something. Here, there is nothing. The dialogue feels like it was written by a robot, the characters feel like pod people pretending to be human.

I’m not saying that I want some world ending events or super emotionally devastating arcs for Nightwing, I think after the last few years Nightwing does need a lighter, more day in the life feel for a while, but even lighter stories need to be emotionally engaging, and this isn’t.

Tom Taylor has made a lot of creative choices that I don’t necessarily like (giving him a random long list sister, for one, and the whole thing with Olivia) but that doesn’t bother me as much because it’s a case of the audience just not liking a story, as opposed to the story being objectively bad.

I can think of a million other examples like this where he has introduced a concept that should have deeply affected Nightwing, but were executed in a way that made the characters and the audience feel nothing. (Him and Barbara getting together, finding a long lost sister, getting superpowers, fostering a daughter).

I want to bring this up because it looks like Tom Taylor is getting more and more control at DC because people keep buying his issues. Presumedly, because of the lighter, fan-servicy feel. But this writing is objectively bad. If he’s going to be writing more titles he needs to make his stories more emotionally engaging, and to do that, he needs to stop telling instead of showing.

Random DC vs Vampires talking.

Major DC vs Vampires series + All-Out War + Hunters plots spoilers

Do you remember back in the DvV: Hunters, Dick did not want to kill Damian. He wants his little brother safe and sound.

He also confessed when he was turned he had no one, which lead to the newest issue All-Out War #3 <King Nightwing: Origin>.

Alone in the dark, with no help, thinking about his dog Haley to block out his fear.😢

He was betrayed by his own sister, who leads him straight to hell and blows up his secret identity. Surely he will trust Melinda because she is the only blood kin Dick left (what a horrible Grayson blood, now I understand the owls). She said "You made yourself so easy to manipulate", that hurts a lot.🤕

Even when Dick realized she was turned he can not kill her because "family means a lot to him". Evil Melinda knows that and uses it as the breaking point. So that was the tragedy began.

Although there is no explanation of why Dick became evil, maybe the evil blood of Pandora affects him or some sort of sire/child will passing effect (I'm not the vampire expert😅). But he did kill the head of the vampire gang. Good for him.

Still, we can see there is still some good left in the King's heart. Maybe just a little but he does want his little brother(s) could stand with him.

Now you see he wasn't joking about wanting to make his brothers join him. Cuz once again, family means a lot to Dick.

I have a weird feeling since this tragic story started with the family (Melinda), it probably will end with the family (Damian, or Bruce if they successfully revive him) too. You see, Dick didn't make the kill order on Damian. That shows his twisted "love" for his special little brother, the key to sharing the world with humanity. It's very likely that Dick will end by this soft spot.

No matter how this story won't end peacefully, it takes strong willpower to continue reading. I constantly think if you're not a Nightwing fan or Green Arrow fan, you probably will not last long till the end of this series.

Can't believe I took so much time to write this.😅 Turns out that if you repeat reading the story, it's not as bad as you thought. I just love my baby girl Dick Grayson in every universe. Thank you for reading.💙

Which leads to the saddest scene on this issue, where Dick has the chance to attack his sister but he really can't bring himself to do it:

I really want to see what else happened between the timeline of this side story and the main dc vs Vampires story. Because Vampire King Dick has no problem killing his family members and he's a cold hearted person. I want to see how this change on his values occurred.

sooooo melinda zucco is totally a vampire, right? that’s what we’re all thinking?

she was probably called in to deal with the vampires or something (or she was targeted by the vampires because she would give them easy access to dick grayson??), got turned, and is now working with them to lure dick in to turn him too (because he’s powerful enough to take down mary ?? idk)

i just feel like it’s awful suspicious how they could only go at night because obviously, dick, vampires only work at night (even tho they’re safe inside their super secret vampire cave)

Do you have any opinion on Melinda Zucco? I've seen a lot of people saying that they don't like her because she doesn't gives anything to the plot, but like, regardless of that i don't really see a reason to not like her

Also i love her mother, i forgot her name but she's so nice 💔

Yeah, I don't really have any reason to hate her as a character so far (I say "so far" because I'm still not 100% sold on the idea that her and Dick are actually related). I mean, fine, it was dumb of her to say Dick's real name in front of the baddie in #94, but TT makes the characters do dumb shit like that all the time in order to progress the plot, so I see that more as a TT problem rather than a Melinda problem.

We don't really know anything personal about Melinda (other than how she was born) so it's hard to care about her much. So far she feels like a character that the next Nightwing writer will forget about and never/rarely mention.

Tbh, I'm more interested in Audre than I am in Melinda. I keep expecting TT to pull the forbidden love trope where the bodyguard falls in love with the president's daughter or the princess 😂. I would 100% rather ditch the current story in favor of reading about Audre and Melinda having a slow burn relationship (except TT can't write them because he writes romance like a Wattpad fic). I could literally plot out a whole story with them, and I feel like it would be funny if Nightwing was constantly dragging Melinda into shit and Audre fucking hated him for it because stop putting Melinda in danger, dammit! I'd be very amused by her beef with Dick.
