When Ron had invited him to the carnival, he had been expecting clowns, cotton candy, screaming children, maybe even elephants and tigers, as well as all manner of trickery.

What he hadn't been expecting were magical creatures. There were magnificent dragons, confined to tiny cages with a protective spell around them, both to prevent the public from reaching in and to keep fire from leaking out. There were hippogriffs, dressed up in gawdy, glittery outfits, displaying their mighty wings and dancing around like show ponies. Hinkypunks swayed side to side in their cages, glowing faintly, while they clung to their lanterns, completely given up on luring people away.

Feeling slightly sick, he wasn't sure he wanted to continue looking, but there were large tanks in the distance and his curiosity got the better of him. The first display was the smallest, it had a sandy bottom and long, thick reeds that reached towards the surface. At first, he didn't see anything, until a grindylow shot out of the darkness, slamming into the glass. It went limp, floating back into the weeds. He quickly kept walking, hoping it hadn't killed itself, because he'd decided to look. The next tank was the largest. It was wide and open, with a clump of rocks in the center of the clearing. They weren't quite large enough to hide the hippocampus trying to cower behind them, its tangled mane drifting into view and revealing itself. The final tank was set in the far corner. It was circular and tall, with a set of stairs that wrapped around it, leading to the top. He could see all manner of trash and rotten food littered along the sand.

There were no reeds or rocks to hide behind, as the tank was almost entirely bare. He thought it rather looked like an afterthought. The water was so murky, he was about to turn and leave, thinking it was empty, when a webbed hand pressed against the glass. He nearly fell over, his heart thudding. A pale, gaunt face appeared out of the gloom. His cheeks were hollow, and his eyes were dull. Taking a step closer, the merman seemed to spot him and tapped on the glass, his expression frantic and desperate. He climbed the stairs, reaching the platform that stretched above the water. There was a small machine along the back, which had a slot for coins. He could see through the glass, it was full of dead fish. They looked awful, as they were set in some sort of sludge.

Behind him, something breached the surface with a splash, sending water all over his shoes. Seeing him up close, he could see now how thin he really was, as all of his ribs were showing. There were two fins that stuck out of his cheeks, only they looked as if they were made of plastic and had been glued on. The skin around that area was red and inflamed. That wasn't to say that the rest of his skin looked healthy, as it was slightly pink in multiple areas and had a yellow pallor to it.

His hand rose, pointing to the box full of fish in the corner. "Please. Please."

He glanced back towards it, realizing that it was probably the only thing he had to eat. Digging his hand into his pocket, he pulled out a sickle and popped it into the machine. There was a small cup dispenser beside it, which he used to catch the fish, as well as all of the slime. Hearing it splat against the bottom of the cup nearly made him gag.

"Can do trick. See?" He dove beneath the water, before he launched out of it, attempting to spin in the air. Only he wasn't able to and flopped back into his tank, reappearing a moment later, his face panicked. "No. No. Can do better trick. Can do better."

"You don't... You don't need to do that." He handed the vile cup over to him, watching as his eyes lit up.

"Thank you. Thank you." His hands shook, as he reached his fingers into the slime, pulling out a sardine, which he dipped into the water to wash off, before he swallowed it whole.

Feeling ill, he looked away, suddenly realizing why the water was so filthy. "Is that all you have to eat?"

There was a sharp swallow. "Yes. Do trick. Get food."

He looked back over at him, realizing that the cup was already empty.

"Do you want more?"

"Please. Can do another trick. Better trick."

"You don't need to." He slipped another sickle into the machine, filling another cup with off sardines and slime as thick as jam. "Here."

Enthusiastic hands received it, pulling the fish out and washing them. "Thank you. Very kind. Can do trick. Lots of trick. Make sure... Make sure happy."

"No. That's really not necessary." He watched, as he slurped down all of the sardines. "How long have you been here?"

"Been with master for as long as remember." The empty cup was sat beside the other one. "Been in tank few year."

He frowned. "Right."

"Do trick. Keep happy."

"No. No tricks." Moving closer, he kneeled along the edge of the platform. "You're... You're quite stuck here, aren't you?"

His lips curled into a pout. "Can't say."

"Alright. Can you come onto the platform?"

"Not... Not allowed."

"What if... What if we say it's a trick? Can you do it then?"

He went silent for a long moment, thinking. "Trick. Yes."

"Alright, Come here... What's your name?"

"Draco." His hands curled around the edge, pulling himself up, until he was partially on the platform. "Trick. Happy?"

"Yes, that's very good. Can you come a little more?"

Reluctantly, Draco dragged himself further, until his entire tail was out of the water. "Trick. Happy?"

"Yes. Very happy. Thank you." Draco was looking at him expectantly, but he ignored him for the moment. "I'm going to take you out of here. Okay?"

"Oh. No. Master wouldn't-"

"Master won't be able to get to you anymore. I'm going to take you somewhere safe. You can have all of the fish you want. Real fish, not... that."

"Safe?"

"Yes. Safe." He looked around, very aware that he could be spotted at any moment. "I'm going to take you now. It's going to be dark, and it's going to be tight at first, but it'll be alright. I'll explain everything once you're out of here."

He grabbed onto Draco's arm, pulling his wand out. He knew he would need to tell Ron what had happened, but he needed to get him somewhere safe first. He would deal with the repercussions of stealing a merman later. Whatever sort of jam that would put him in.

Everything started to spin, before the world went dark, and he felt as if he were being squeezed through a tight tube.

Draco watched from behind a large rock as the land human took off all their clothes and walked into the cold, salty ocean water.

A blush was slowly creeping up Draco’s pale cheeks. He couldn’t deny it. The land human was absolutely gorgeous.

From the messy dark hair and the strong muscles in their arms, to the bared chest glistening with droplets of water. It was quite a sight to see.

As the land human walked further into the water, Draco hid more behind the rock. They couldn’t see him yet. It was too dangerous. He couldn’t be sure.

But Neptune be damned if the urge to press his cold, wet lips to that warm, inviting chest wasn’t simmering in the pit of his stomach.

Narcissa does not think that Harry Potter is an appropriate mate for her son.

He'll make a good husband. Politically, he's a fantastic match, and secures their family as allies to the winning side of this war without ever having to reveal the hand they had in ending it. He's rich and famous and of a respectable enough pedigree. He's even easy on the eyes, looking perfectly matched standing next to her handsome son. As a witch, Narcissa has no complaints.

As a merman's wife and a merman's mother, she's concerned.

Harry Potter isn't known for his ruthlessness, for being bloodthirsty or wild. She worries that he's distracted by her son's beauty and is missing is ferocity, that he's only interested in pursuing the parts of Draco that he finds palatable and enticing and not the parts that turn any respectable wizard's stomach.

She tells this to Draco, not to break his heart, but to warn him. Before it's too late, and he does get his heart broken.

But he just grins at her, lopsided and honest and wide enough that she can see most of his very sharp teeth. "Relax, Mum. Since when has Harry been a respectable wizard?"

She pauses, considering. "Darling-"

"He took me hunting," he cuts her off. "The first time he saw me transform was to attack his godfather's mate. He knows."

Narcissa herself married into a rich, powerful line of monsters, the Malfoys a force to be reckoned with on sea and on land. She does not consider Sirius's choice of a common mutt to be equivalent.

But there are enough similarities between them that she sighs and shakes her head and leaves Draco to his courtship.

Harry has a werewolf for a godfather. Perhaps Draco's most terrifying instincts are not so foreign to him.

Angel!Draco shuts you out whenever he transforms into his angel form, due to the pain he has to endure whenever his wings practically rip out of his back.

You do anything in your power to help him.

The first time you witnessed him transforming, you were shocked. You hated to see the pain your boyfriend had to go through. You ran over to him immediately after his wings fully emerged from his back and you held him in your arms as he cried due to the pain, that was the only time he let you see him like that.

He comes to you as soon as he’s finished with his transformation for comfort(he transforms once a month.)

It’s more of a curse than a blessing, ironically.

He loves nothing more than your touch after those rough nights, you help him with the scars on his back from the wings and bandage him up.

He appreciates you so much, and he’s so happy you didn’t leave him after finding out what he is.

He calls you his angel.

One time, after many days of begging, he let you come along to the astronomy tower to help him with his transformation. You held him and comforted him during the process and he took you out for a flight, it was pretty scary but he held you tight to his chest, process style.

After that, he makes it his routine to take you to the best view nearby, which is also the highest.

MATTHEO RIDDLE - werewolf

Werewolf!Mattheo is so cuddly and clingy, especially before full moons.

You help him get to safe places and prepare him before full moons as well.

After full moons, you help him clean up any wounds or bruises he obtained from the night before.

He definitely loves head scratches as much as you love giving them.

Just like Draco, he comes to you for comfort after his transformations.

He loves those early mornings in your dorm when he’s laid up on his bed and your sat on his lap, bandaging up his cuts and kissing his bruises.

Nap dates!!

He’s definitely the type to surprise you with some wildflowers he found in a field.

He never lets you witness his transform because it’s too much of a risk for your safety

He only wants to meet you safe :(

THEODORE NOTT - merman

Merman!Theo is so playful and he loves to mess with you.

Whenever you guys are swimming at the black lake, he would flick his tail and drench you with water.

He also goes under the water and pulls you under when you least except it to scare you.

At night, you both hang out by the dock while he’s in the water and you’re laying by the edge just chatting away in the moonlight. Your head is laying on your hands just before the edge of the dock while he’s gazing up at you in the water (kisses definitely occur in this position).

He collects shells and cool rocks from the bottom of the lake to gift to you, as well as he makes jewelry with the shells for you.

Swimming dates 24/7!!

You both stay in his dorm whenever it’s raining and cuddle up under the blankets, the coziest thing ever.

BLAISE ZABINI - vampire

Vampire!Blaise is extremely careful around you, since your human, he has the so much self control because he doesn’t want to hurt you.

He’s so polite and sweet with you.

He goes into London at night to feed off of the muggles, since they’re useless in his eyes anyway.

He definitely steals the money off of them and buys you gifts with the stolen cash.

He spoils you so much!!!

He adores placing small kisses on your neck and shoulders.

You’ve definitely asked him to turn you a few times, to which he denies because he doesn’t want you to turn into a monster like him.

“You’re too sweet, my love. I do not want you to feel the way I do.”

Since he doesn’t sleep, he wakes you up in the morning with tea or coffee.

He loves to just stare and admire you from up close or afar, he just loves you so much!

LORENZO BERKSHIRE - ghost

Ghost!enzo is literally the sweetest most precious man to ever exist.

He goes ghost when he’s shy or whenever he’s flustered, it’s adorable.

“You’re so handsome, Enzo.” And poof, he’s gone.

Unlike all the other boys, his transformations are more random, but he can force it as well.

He mostly only uses his powers to sneak out of class to see you or leave earlier to walk you to your next class.

Also, he loves to sneak up on you and scare you. it’s so annoying.

Since he’s a ghost and can literally go through walls, he can sneak in the girl’s dormitory, which means he always gets to wake you up by pressing a thousand kisses all over your face.

He sneaks over to hogsmead late at night and buys you so much candy from honeydukes every week, so you’re always stocked up.

Even though he’s a ghost, his love language is physical touch!!

I actually wrote about half of these stories this year, but this is what I posted this year. I spent a good month digging out and wrapping up some WIPs that had been hanging around. They're at the bottom, since most of them are not HP related.

A Christmas fic for the Drarry Microfic exchange of 2022 which, just like the one for 2023, started out being something very different, and ended up this - a short snippet of an older, married Drarry, reflecting and enjoying their life.

The Old is New Again (Harry Potter|Drarry) (1,471 words)

I wanted to do my own take on trans!Draco, and this became Calla, and honestly? I love her.

Kinktober was so much fun. I really wanted to challenge myself with these, and I continue to be challenged with more of these stories that'll go out in 2024. It's been so much fun, especially writing kinks I don't share, since I have to really dig into characters and why the kinks appeal to them.

dare to dream it, dare to be it (Harry Potter|Harry/Sirius/Remus) (1,886 words)

I loved writing this boot worship kink story, I loved finding the ways that it's important to both Harry and Sirius, and exploring Harry's hopes and insecurities when it came to Remus.

Never Too Much (Harry Potter|Harry/Remus) (3,432 words)

This watersports story is so wholesome, honestly. It's E rated, but it's an established relationship, and it's very much about trust and vulnerability, and I love that aspect of exploring kinks like this, that can involve judgement.

Unlocked (Harry Potter|Drarry; Harry/Sirius) (1,205 words)

This collar kink story was one of the most fun ideas I had. I wasn't able to flesh it out as much as I wanted to, but I'm definitely hoping to revisit this magical collar idea in the future. There's so much potential!

A Charitable Endeavour (Harry Potter|Drarry) (2,322 words)

I actually have a few more fics planned in this verse, but we'll see if I get to them. So much filth to write, so little time.

The Heart of Our Home (Harry Potter|Drarry) (2,592 words)

This year's Drarry microfic exchange fic! Cottagecore with a scant spoonful of angst, and a sprinkle of sentient house fun.

Another challenge, which I set for myself, was to post stories that had sat around in my WIPs for a long time. I generally needed to add something, but in most cases I found that, even if I'd meant it to be a lot more, they stood alone as they were, or with some brief connections between scenes. I learned a lot from this effort.

Another Beginning (Teen Wolf (TV)|Deaton/Sheriff Stilinski) (3,168 words)

This was such a healing story for me to write and to put into the world. These two characters don't really get a lot of attention, especially in a romantic way, but I think they both have a really intense loyalty to the pack that makes them uniquely suited to one another, and I was really glad to be able to get this out so other people could enjoy it.

Our Relentless Dreaming (Dragaera - Steven Brust|Vlad/Morrolan) (4,431 words)

I'd had this one partially finished for quite a while, and I'd planned to tailor it for Yuletide and gift it. That...didn't work out very well, since I ended up being on the Yuletide naughty list, but I was still able to tweak it and gift it, and enjoy having it out there and off my WIPs list. It got a hearteningly beautiful reception, and I appreciated that so much.

Picked Clean (Harry Potter|Draco & Harry) (989 words)

I never entirely knew where I wanted this to go, but I wanted it to be a darker look at Draco, especially, after the war. I wanted to take both Harry and Draco in a new direction, to understand them in a different way, and I really enjoyed exploring this take.

I love Jody and Donna, and I loved exploring their relationship, how Jody would navigate it and what she would get out of it.

This sat in my drafts because of a transition issue...I added a sentence and let 'er rip, and I like it a lot. It's about the slow process of working through guilt and grief, and how it's just a little easier with someone who understands.

And the feeling of emptiness in his chest, the feeling some part of him was missing, was at least better than the alternative. Or at least it was until the last few months when he kept getting called down to the police station to get Harry Potter out of trouble. Indecent exposure and possession was one thing, but the latest charge was for murder. OR Harry and Draco find each other again after the war in Oxford, a completely non-magical city. Together they solve the mystery of the city which hates all wizards but them.

He was nobody in this world. His marriage was a failure, his son wanted nothing to do with him or his job. He was just a little person drifting on his boat in the middle of  the sea. He didn’t even know if his family would be waiting for him at home. 

He watched the sea, hoping that someone would come for him. Someone who could truly love him and wasn’t forced to because of an arranged marriage. 

“Hello,” a voice said beside him. 

Draco jumped out of surprise as he looked at the man in the water. He had vibrant green eyes and a big, green fishtail swishing around in the water. Draco moved away from the edge of his boat. He didn’t believe his eyes! There was a real merman right in front of him!

“You’re Draco Malfoy, right?” the man asked with a soft smile. “I’ve seen you so many times! I’m Harry.”

Draco was at a loss for words. He looked at Harry with growing interest. Maybe this was his new beginning? That little person in the world he had been searching for.

“Hello,” he said, “I’m Draco.” 

“I know.” The merman chuckled. “You looked so sad today, I thought you would like to… come with me?” 

Draco had heard all the stories about fishermen getting captured by sirens. He knew this was dangerous. But he couldn’t help staring in those deep green eyes. They were so hypnotising. 

“Take care of me,” Draco said as he held out his hand.

The merman smiled wildly as he took the hand and dove back into the water. Draco gasped at the strength that dragged him over the egde. He thought he might drown, the water filling his lungs. It was too much. He wanted to follow but he didn’t want to die. 

But then he felt those lips on his. It was the last thing he felt before falling unconscious.

It's not just pearls.

Merpeople like fine, glittering things. Pirates and merpeople were a perfect match for more than one reason - many relationships were built on worse foundations than a love of the sea and stolen treasure. Besides, any captain with a mermaid for a lover never had to worry about burying their treasure on some abandoned island. Entrusting it to them to guard meant no human would ever be able to find it.

But adorning his boyfriend in jewels is considered tacky among humans, on top of being expensive, and it's not like Draco wears any anyway. Harry's sure he'll wear whatever pearl he finds for him happily enough, but it doesn't seem to be something he allows himself to indulge in.

"It's not about value," Ginny tells him in exasperation. Harry wonders if he should be offended at how much easier she's finding this whole dating a merperson thing, but Luna is significantly more forthcoming than Draco. About some things. "Not these days, and not to merpeople like the Malfoys, who have more than enough of their own gold and money and jewels on both sides of the family. Draco will probably give you a pair of emeralds when he can find a suitable enough occasion, but that doesn't mean he wants the same."

What's he supposed to do with a couple emeralds? Should he get his ears pierced, maybe?

"That doesn't tell me what to get him, though," he says.

"Luna like weird, kitschy jewelry that I find in bargain bins in Knocturn Alley or that Dad confiscates and sends me after it's been de-cursed," she shrugs. "It's - the point is lots of it, and often, and something they like."

Draco doesn't seem to really be attached to things though, which is likely a side affect of growing up being able to have anything he wanted. He liked flying and fighting and hunting -

Hm.

"Do you like it?" he asks anxiously while Draco looks over the dragon bone dagger he'd had Charlie help him find. It wasn't particularly expensive, but it's genuine, and well made, and ethically sourced. "I know you have your claws and teeth but you use your trident sometimes too and I thought you might like-"

Draco kisses him, the edges of his too sharp teeth pressing against his lips before he pulls back. "Yes."
