🧜‍♀️Tourist of Opportunity [Deuce Spade] 🧜‍♀️
It had been one of the last vacations Deuce had taken.
Being a single mother meant they didn’t often have the opportunity to travel as a family, and his behavior didn’t exactly make him deserving of one… But a relative of his mothers had won free lodging in a contest and wasn’t able to attend, so they had asked his mother if she’d like to go instead. She had asked him, with a desperate pleading look, to be on his best behavior while they were at the resort and he had agreed with a shameful nod of his head.
He hated that he caused her trouble.
To make the trip truly relaxing for her not only would he keep his nose clean, but he’d stay out of her hair as well. While she seemed worried about a young teenager wandering around, the workers assured he wouldn’t be allowed to leave resort grounds without her explicit consent. She seemed to relax her shoulders at that, enough that it gave Deuce some relief as well. He knew how to entertain himself and even if he didn’t, he’d start counting every spec of sand on the beach before bothering her.
He found a cozy spot on the beach near a set of rocks that made for—well, it was a seat. He had a watch that he had since he was little, recently smashed in a fight, and he had been tinkering with it for quite some time. He knew that it was probably hopeless as the mechanisms inside were ground to dust at this point, but he was finding a way to keep his mind busy; it helped him get a little more familiar with how it worked, what made it tick, and he did that often with machinery even if he knew it was broken.
It was just his own little way of being useful around the house, helpful and a good son like he should be.
There’s something glittering in the distance that Deuce noticed, just beneath the water, but he doesn’t pay it much mind. It could easily just be the bright sun reflecting off the ocean’s surface, plus, the watch was taking up all his attention. There were splashes of water, waves hitting the beach, a large one coming in faster than Deuce could realize until it had him completely soaked.
Well, the watch was done for after that.
It was his own fault for trying to fix something like that on the beach of all places but he sighed, wiping what sand he could off of it.
“That’s a pretty thing you have there. A watch, right?”
He nearly dumped the watch right back into the sand when he looked toward where the voice had come from, eyes scanning the nearby rocks until the glittery something hit his eyes again. Scales? Definitely scales. He’d only seen a certain types of fish up close, none quite that striking color or as a sparkly—Merperson. A merperson!
You seemed amused by his surprise, leaning further against the rock and smiling at him as he soaked in your image. The existence of merpeople was well known but it wasn’t often you got to mingle; you knew there was some type of potion that would allow you to talk on land but it was expensive, and you had never had a reason to look into it. Swimming near the shores where all the tourists liked to go was your source of entertainment, having met plenty of interesting people (and some creeps, but thankfully you could swim far faster than they could).
Deuce wasn’t used to be talked to like this. You hadn’t just surprised him, you weren’t showing an ounce of wariness. You flicked your tail playfully at him, splashing his feet with some water.
“Why not come closer?”
Wasn’t there a tale that warned against that? Deuce hadn’t read many fairy tales…
“Can I see that thing you keep messing with?”
Deuce gave in, knowing the employees were just a stones throw away if he really did have to call for him. He carefully navigated over the rocks, nearly slipping from one a little deeper in the water; he gets an up close and personal view of just how fast a mermaid could be, your hands on his back to hold him up right until he found his footing. That rock was his final destination, seating himself carefully while you pulled yourself up on the other side, hand held out expectantly.
You turned the watch in your hand, over and over, a curious expression on your face.
“This doesn’t look like it works…”
“It doesn’t.”
“Then why have you been staring at it all day?”
“Oh, uh…” Deuce suddenly felt sweaty, nervous, like he was supposed to be more interesting than he actually was. He looked at his hands, the rock, the birds loudly squawking in the distance, anywhere but at you. “I was trying to… fix it.”
“No luck?”
“None.”
“That’s okay, it’s kinda fun to look at anyway.” You reached your hand in to touch the tiny clock hand, manually moving it around. “Do you know what time it actually is?”
“Let me check…” Deuce pulled his phone from his pocket, thankful again that he hadn’t been fully submerged as he wouldn’t have gotten this working again either. It would’ve been more trouble for his poor mother… Maybe he should’ve just stayed locked up in his room.
He gave you the time and you spun the hands around, setting it properly.
“There!” You reached out to give it back to him, “Now it’ll be stuck at the time we met forever. And you’ll never forget me!”
It would be hard to forget you in the first place, but for you to forget him… He was just some punk kid sitting on the beach staring at a watch, you’d probably seen a dozen more interesting people that morning. Something about it unsettled him, left a queasy feeling in his stomach. He wanted to be interesting to you. He wanted you to remember him.
“You keep it.”
“Me? I don’t have use for a watch…”
“It’s broken, so me either…” You both stared at it for a moment, only the sounds of the waves filling the empty space. You finally smiled, retracting your hand that was holding the watch and keeping it close to your chest.
“Thank you for your present. I should give you one too, right?”
“Yo-you don’t have to—” You slipped into the ocean and slid beneath the surface before he could get a word in, moving slowly to peak over the edge at where you had disappeared. It’s only a few moments until he sees the glitter of your tail again shining through, his eyes mesmerized by the display; such a wonderful color, unique, one he could certainly never forget. And suddenly it’s in front of him, tinier, but there.
“A scale. My scale!” He didn’t move to take it so you took initiative yourself, taking hold of his hand and opening his fingers so his palm was upward; you placed the scale in, then closed his fingers, regaining your distance. “I should be getting home for lunch, parents get a little twitchy when I go to shore and don’t come home, buttttt that should be a promise. To never forget me, ‘kay? I’ll be mad if you do!”
Your head stayed above the surface as you drifted away, waving to him until you finally seemed to disappear into the sunset; he waved back as long as he knew you could see him. He didn’t think there was much left to do on the beach, now that his watch was gone and it was time for dinner, and the one promise he had made to his mom was to always been on time to dinner.
It was years since then, yet the day still stood out in his mind. He’d never met someone so beautiful before, so unafraid and confident even when dealing with someone they didn’t know. He held onto that experience forever, hoping to one day visit that resort again, wondering if you still traveled there to tourist watch or if you’d moved on to better things. You seemed about his age so maybe you were too busy, and that he should’ve asked you more about yourself when he had the chance. It was such a fleeting moment he almost felt silly about how it stuck in his mind like glue.
And then there you were.
The lack of tail and soaking wet hair didn’t phase Deuce, he knew it was you.
Walking, with legs, in your Octavinelle uniform, speaking to another dorm member with a smile on your face. He almost approached you but decided against it, too embarrassed, too afraid, to be confronted with the fact you might not remember him. He reminded himself again that it wouldn’t be unusual, that you had been a social merperson who had seen a million land dweller’s faces, but he would’ve remembered you among a sea of merpeople’s faces (if he ever had the opportunity to meet more than one).
“What’s wrong with your watch?”
Deuce was still deciding on whether to bite the bullet, to introduce himself like you’d never met before, when he heard your friend speak up. You regarded them with the same amused smile you had worn all those years ago, head tilting as you held up the wrist that had your watch on it—The same one he had given you! He’d recognize it for sure, if from no other detail than the broken face of it and it’s unmoving hands.
Still stuck to the same time.
“It was a gift from this cute boy I met,” You seemed to look at the watch fondly, at least, Deuce thought it was something like that. Had you really liked his broken watch so much? Your scale was something far more valuable. He had carried it around with him in his pocket as a good luck charming, squeezing it tight when he thought he may be getting into trouble; it always seemed to help him when he needed it most.
“It’s broken?” Your friend seemed puzzled. “Some dude gave you a broken ass watch and you still like him? You’re weird.”
“You had to be there.” You shrugged, unbothered by their disbelief. “I don’t really know how to find him, but I’m hoping he’ll just plop on my lap again someday.”
“You sound just like the prince… Well, not exactly, but…”
“Yeah, yeah, let’s get back to studying before we’re scolded.”
Deuce felt his heart clench, holding his breath until he heard your footsteps fade into silence. He might not be able to talk to you just yet but you were closer to him now then you ever were. He’d have plenty of chances to strike up a conversation and then after that…
Deuce could offer you something far better than some broken watch.

Mermay related thought: going diving to see a shipwreck but it turns out to actually be a resting mer-transformer and you both accidentally scare each other.
Okay this is so WHOLESOME I can seriously see the entire thing playing out! Human is a professional diver with a love for bringing up treasures and artifacts and has a boat with a sonar sensor. One day they detect some kind of large item within diving range and think "Sweet, new discovery!" before putting down an anchor and suiting up for a dive.
Unbeknownst to this human, there's no treasure or sunken ships awaiting them. A merformer simply needed to rest and found a nice spot in comparatively shallow water for a power down. They're curled up on the sea floor amidst a forest of undersea greenery and stones, making it impossible to identify them as anything more than an apparent mass of metal in the dim light. It doesn't help that they pulled seaweed around themselves like a giant blanket.
Human grows perplexed as they begin to swim around the shape and realize it's not built like any kind of vessel they're familiar with. Eventually they begin to explore more up close, unknowingly swimming around to the bots front where they spot something like arms. Brushing away the seaweed for a better look startles the poor bot, and the sight of two bright optics flashing on in the dim light terrifies the diver just as deeply. Both parties swim away from the other in a panic, but of course the much larger bot sends the human spinning with their wake, something they notice once they get their wits about them and realize there's no threat.
Bot immediately feels guilty and helps human right themselves, and escorts them back to the surface when it becomes clear humans can't speak underwater. A host of apologies are exchanged, and when it's explained what the human was looking for the still regretful merformer produces some trinkets they pulled from an actual shipwreck as an apology. Human is delighted but says no payment is needed, though the bot insists and eventually the two get to talking about the ocean and the sights they've seen within.
As both are quite lonely, this immediately sparks a friendship. The human doesn't relate much to their kind, and the poor bot doesn't have many other merformers to hang out with on Earth. Eventually they decide they'd like to see one another again, and the bot even accompanies the human all the way to their dock to keep the conversation going... If they live on their boat, they might just have a little sleepover.
I can't even imagine how cute this might be. Swimming together, bot giving the human rides and showing them the best shipwrecks, the human bringing them fun things from land... All of it develops into the cutest romance.

Oh to be a handsome little merfolk living happily under the waves of the sea.
Watching how the other merfolk disperse or silence themselves at the mention of the sea witch who lives far away in a hidden cavern. Only whispers of a broken riddle as the map of how to find him.
They say those who are brave, can. And those who are lucky, leave with their greatest wish granted to them. At what cost however? As the unlucky never return.
You are of some luck, both good and bad to have been swimming amidst the kelp beds when you see him for the first time.
And he was something to behold, black tentacles sprouting from his waist where your tail was. Stout figure covered in intricate golden markings along skin, and long white hair flowing around his form. He looked nothing like your fellow merfolk, who's agility and speed gave way to lean and lithe form, no. This was a massive man who's greatest assets looked to be strength, with the form to match.
Your curiosity grew as you watched the creature, noting how he muttered to himself over the different ingredients he must have been looking for, and as you saw his dark eyes you realized that your prior thought had been wrong. He was strong, that was certain. But this creature's greatest asset? Was intelligence.
Hiding within the vegetation along the sea floor, you simply watched the cecaelia with wide, intrigued eyes. Waiting till after he was gone to finally swim up and away yourself.
After that you kept an ear out for the cecaelia. Hearing every time one would seem desperate enough to search for him, watching as some returned proud and gleeful, others with some reluctance, and most, didn't.
The common theme between all of them that you could understand was there was a greater price to pay than expected.
The proud didn't realize what they might have lost, the wary knew all too well, and the others you had no clue.
You could almost taste fear in the salty water whenever he was mentioned, never by name, however.
One day, by your unknown state of luck, you saw him again. Along the reef where many merfolk will sell their wares and creations he was there, perusing a keeper's hand grown clams, ignoring the keeper who was hiding behind his own tailfin.
He was quiet in his search, selecting three with great care before leaving a generous portion of coin on the keepers counter as the merman wouldn't dare look the cecaelia in the eye.
The cecaelia seemed unbothered by such treatment, leaving you feeling a certain sort of empathy. You remember the days that most merfolk would almost ignore you for being different in personality and appearance.
This creature was such a mystery! Generous, and reserved, and intelligent, and capable, and possibly dangerous, gah! Why did he have to make it so hard on you?? Couldn't he be good or bad acting to easily let you know if you should squash those feelings you had begun to notice in your chest?? The nerve.
It takes another few days for you to make up your mind to satiate your curiosities and feelings. If you can find him by the riddle those who have been whisper, then you can speak with the creature and decide if it's worth anything at all.
After all, even he must be lonely, yes?
It was no easy venture, finding someone smart enough yet stupid enough to remember the words and to be willing to share them took effort, as did following the directions within those hidden words.
After a length of time would pass, you would be swimming along the bottom of a hidden trench in the sea floor, only accompanied by the occasional eel or slug.
And yet, you saw it. A deep crack in the stoney walls of the trench that widens into what would be a doorway for something over twice your size... Which the sea witch was. With any hesitation having long left you, you swam carefully towards and through the makeshift doorway. Eyes adjusting to see a cavern with makeshift shelves, lined with various oddities and ingredients, few set along the shelves, apart enough that their faint glow lit up the walls, hard rocks lining the ground and ceiling.
You swam slowly and carefully as to avoid any possible injury, wondering if the massive cecaelia could wander through with ease or as much difficulty as you were maneuvering with.
"I would be a poor host should I not greet you at the door." Spoke a strong voice from the shadows, you flicked your tail down, stilling your motion as you looked around. "However-" the voice called once more as the giant cecaelia moved into the dim light, tentacles carrying him easily as he moved to tower over you in the cavern entrance way. "-Had I been aware of your coming, I could have prepared, so I can't quite say I've been a poor host if I wasn't aware I was one. Wouldn't you say?" The words held no malice though there was something guarded in the way he watched you.
Your tail flicked nervously as you found your words, "My intention was not to cast you in such light, nor to enter unwelcomed. I... Wasn't quite aware that this was your home," you smiled sheepishly, hand resting upon the gills of your neck for a moment to stop yourself from continuing.
The sea witch watched with a more relaxed demeanor, granting a small grin as he gestured further into his home. "I suppose when put like that I can't mind. Come, you deliberately sought me out, did you not? Come further in and tell me what it is you seek."
You stalled for a moment, realizing he was waiting for you to move as he would not turn his back to you. Curious indeed. With no outward malice, you felt comfortable enough to flick your tail and move forward once more, swimming past the cecaelia and further into the cavern, you noted that the rocks smoothed and disappeared, leading to soft sand along the floor.
The sea witch followed you closely, stopping as you did in front of his makeshift table.
You turned with a slight startle, noticing how close he was, or at least it felt like it, with how his tentacles splayed out along the floor, they could easily reach out and wrap thrice around you at minimum. Though they remained as relaxed as he appeared. "I must confess, I am here for my own curiosities, not for something of a physicality."
He paused, settling down at the table and resting his arms against it, leaning towards you. "And what curiosities are you to indulge in here?"
Following his lead, you relaxed against the tabletop, trying to ignore the warmth in your cheeks and neck as well as your ear fins nervous twitching. "Curiosities of you..."
"I'm sorry?"
You watched the incredulous look upon his face with confusion. Surely you weren't the first to take an interest in the man. Tilting your head, you watched carefully as you chose your next words one by one. "I am curious of you, I've seen you multiple times before. I've felt certain ways at the simple mention of you and with you only coming around every so often I decided to find you myself to learn more about you and decide what to do with these feelings of mine."
The sight of such a powerful looking creature covering his mouth with a dark purple flush covering his round cheeks was quite a sight. Especially once you realized that his tentacles had curled up, making him look smaller than before.
You smiled easily and patiently as you waited for a reply.
"I...-" he cut himself off. Shaking his head and finally looking away from you, to the ground. Eyes going from something warm to cold, almost cruel. "Have you come to humiliate me on behalf of some sorry fool who thinks me to blame for their misfortune?" His quiet voice turning into a snarl as he bared a row of fangs you hadn't noticed before.
You jolted back, confused and concerned now. "What could you possibly mean by that?"
The creature shifted to height once more, no longer settled but looking between a mix of agitated and hurt. "Just what makes you think I'd believe for a moment that such a handsome little merfolk like yourself would express such interest in this monstrosity?! There are plenty of other mers of your own size and almost of your own beauty to settle with, not some-" he raised a hand, attempting to accentuate his point before letting out a deep sigh, closing his eyes and lowering once more.
You stared for a moment, caught between flustered over the manner in which he referred to you, and feeling sorry that he didn't believe you. Slowly, you swam upward, to be at eye level with him, as soon as the water current from your movements reached him you saw him almost flinch back.
That wouldn't do.
Slowly, gently, you took his far larger hand in your own, raising it up to hold as you waited for him to open his eyes.
Slowly, he did, turning to look at you with such an open expression you couldn't help just how soft your own voice had grown. "I am here of my own volition because there is something about you that I wish to know more of." You watch as the flushed look returns to his face, feeling the warmth emanating off of his form. "I have seen your intelligence, I have seen your quiet, I have seen your generosity and gentle hand, even when ignored so blatantly." You lean closer, less than a tail away and able to feel the water shift where his tentacles have risen and circled around you, almost close enough to hold. "This, is why I am here. To learn from you what I could only learn by spending time with you, if you'll let me?" You question softly.
The cecaelia stared intently, eyes never leaving your form, he can smell a lie, and there isn't a single one. A cautious voice rises from his chest. "If this is what you truly wish, I would happily welcome your company for as long as you care to return. However, such a deal even if this nature, requires something in return."
"I'm ... Afraid I don't have much," your voice wanders off
The water tenses as his voice grows stronger, more certain in his words, "I find that this will be easily granted by you, should you wish strongly enough to do as you've said." You feel his hand in yours finally grip yours with a gentle strength, almost refusing to release as he slowly pulls you closer, massive form almost encompassing you as his confidence returns in full force. "A kiss." His breathing deepens as he watches your response.
You can practically feel the intensity of this creature in just his gaze alone. You've already learned something new. He is very intense. That intensity might manifest in whatever deals he creates but in this moment it is focused entirely on you.
With that thought in mind, you move suddenly and without warning, allowing you to catch him off guard. With a strong push of your tail you've made yourself close enough to grab his face with your free hand and press your lips to his, closing your eyes and feeling his entire body jolt before melting into your far smaller form, happily.
It only last a moment before you pull away with a small grin, hand still resting on his cheek. The expression of surprises and genuine warmth catches you off guard.
"Akos."
You tilt your head at his response.
"I give you my name, Akos. You wanted to learn more of me, the first thing I can tell you that no one else knows is just that." He speaks easily, arms moving to keep you close.
"Akos," you mutter quietly, delighting in how you can see him shiver despite trying to hide it. You lean closer once more, watching his eyes close as your nose bumps against his, lips slowly finding their way back together as you speak. "What else will you give to me?"
A quick breath catches in his throat as he feels your lips move over his with your words. Trying and failing to at least keep his tentacles from holding onto your tail as well.
"Anything," he breaths, finally pulling you close enough to be pressed against his form. "Everything."

For mermay requests what about the colonel as a mershark? I’ve always thought he’d be a neat mershark like a light brown color with red on his shoulders and chest for his suspenders/neckerchief thing

I'd like to think that he found the hat searching around the ocean floor and that his tail would have scars on it for various reasons.
Thanks for the request anon <3
