I rewatched Nightbreed (director's cut) half on the 24th, finished up on the 25th (I had gotten interrupted and didn't feel comfy using headphones with a stranger in the apartment) and it was a really good choice aside from being one of my top favorites. Couldn't get my external drive to play the bluray and shudder dropped it but I had also bought it streaming on am*z*n at some point so resorted to that.

I have semi joking opinions about why it's a Christmas movie I won't go into right now (it premiered in mid February 1990, so not cuz release date) but it's also one effective antidote to me spiraling around some ugly & violent past stuff around and coinciding with big family holidays.

Anyway, I love that it shits on psychiatry, police, and the church as the real monsters without indicating that the professions are 100% held by villains, and there's a gentler sideswipe at sensationalist media. It doesn't make cishet nuclear families the enemy but naive and vulnerable, which is good and I don't think any kind of appeasment. It doesn't and can't take direct aim at homophobia or compulsory heterosexuality, most of the queerness of the movie is metaphorical - it did come out in 1990 - although Narcisse very clearly hits on Ohnaka. It doesn't get into abusive parents/alienation from family of origin so much as just implies it with Boone and Lori and imo Narcisse. It makes Boone and Lori more normal/cool than they were in the original novella which is understandable and works out okay. It still goes a lot of places the studio did not like (the monsters are the good guys!) and the theatrical release was a very different beast and yet it still had a big cult following. At least one actor in the cast had a very gay headcanon for his character and worked some of that subtly into the movie.

It also has a lot of gorgeous monster makeup and practical effects. The director's cut was restored from a lot of film that was lost in storage for decades.

I read this one comic:

And as with most things, it lead me to think about comic books.

Specifically, DC, and how the alien members of the Justice League would react to an alien fetish site.

(Sidenote: Tim Drake is the one that makes them aware of the fetish. Either on accident, on purpose and to cause problems or to save the world. Any reason works.)

I think Clark would at first be kind of weirded out and a little offended, 'cause to him an alien is just a fella from another country, so it's like fetishising French or Nigerian people to him.

Then he realizes there isn't any interest in him because he looks totally human, and he figures out it's got more to do with big teeth and tentacles.

So now he's less disapproving but still a bit miffed that he's not considered alien enough to be sexy, to Lois' amusement.

Martian Manhunter reads minds, so he knew already. Now that the rest of the League is aware, he can admit that the reason he doesn't walk around in his normal martian form has less to do with not scaring people and more with not being flirted with.

Starfire notices no difference in the amount of people fawning over her. Neither does Icon, or Lobo.
