TIL a family in Georgia claimed to have passed down a song in an unknown language from the time of their enslavement; scientists identified the song as a genuine West African funeral song in the Mende language that had survived multiple transmissions from mother to daughter over multiple centuries (x)

Still laughing at Brian May offhandedly writing the greatest understatement in the history of academia in his astrophysics doctoral dissertation:

Ah, yes - “various pressures.” Like being one of the greatest guitarists ever and playing/writing/singing for the most legendary rock band of all time.
Those various pressures.

society is spiraling and culture is a wasteland. i know this because i looked and most people prefer things that are fun and easy, making fun and easy things extremely popular. this is the first time that's ever happened, historically.

Tubbo's grown so much as a DJ these past few weeks, but I gotta say, every time he drops Spanish or Brazilian music into the mix, I lose my damn MIND, this goes so hard 💿🎶

since a ton of people are getting into music as gaeilge because of hozier, can i recommend my fave artist, róisín seoighe? she's a native irish speaker and language ambassador whose lyrics often involve the preservation of irish culture and deep rage against colonization. níl mé marbh ("i'm not dead") makes me cry like a baby and sin do lamh ("reach out") makes me want to burn all of colonialism down. she's also done several collabs with imlé, another EXCELLENT irish language band that does modern-feeling rock and dance music! my fave of their collabs right now is ÉAD ("jealous").
both artists have less than 1,700 monthly listeners on spotify simply because they sing in irish & they deserve more bc their music Really Is Excellent. translations of many songs are google-able & when there Aren't english translations, it's really good practice for people learning irish!

You! Internalize that you do not always need to "improve your art/craft" now! It's great to learn and develop your skills, but you do not need to come from a place of hating where you are now! You certainly do not need to force yourself to improve if it is coming in between you and enjoying the things you do. Improvement for improvements sake does not have to be the only goal, nor the only one that "should matter"
You are allowed to have motifs, enjoyment, ameturism, and "less skill." Kill and devour the capitalist in your head that dictates that you must always improve for everybody else's sake and your "productivity."

I've noticed that YouTube's auto-generated captions have begun indicating when music without dialogue is playing, but sometimes these musical interludes are captioned as "[music]", and sometimes they're captioned as "[foreign music]", and at first I was like "okay, there must be some algorithmic exotifying going on here", but I've listened to numerous examples and for the life of me I can't figure out how it decides which one to use. At one point it was captioning the Pizza Tower soundtrack as "[foreign music]".

literally i cannot stress the importance of taking your ear health seriously. like it scares me how many people just don't think about this. since i don't see this discussed enough on music tumblr, here are my tips...
If you listen to music/audio 8 hours a day, it's recommended to listen at a maximum of 85 decibels (you can use a sound meter and some googling to measure your headphone's sound level).
If you want a more practical measurement, the maximum recommended volume with headphones you should be listening at 60% of your devices volume.
If you can take your headphones off and still hear your music, your music is too loud!
Headphones that block out external noise are better than normal headphones since less external noise means it's easier to hear your music at a lower volume. earbuds and airpods should be avoided at all costs.
If you're going to a loud event like a concert, bring earplugs.
At the end of the day, just be mindful and considerate of your listening habits.
