re-doing heroes of olympus

HOO sucks, in a lot of aspects. And so I'm going to talk about how I'd fix it because I'm bored and also for fun. To be fair, I would rewrite HOO so quickly if I had the time and motivation.

(featuring: frank/leo, drew tanaka, and katie gardner)

(warning: long post under cut. and i mean long.)

The (revised) Seven:

Drew Tanaka - Drew replaces Piper here because, although I think Piper is interesting, Drew is a far better and more nuanced character if you let her be. Featuring: Drew's trauma, her thoughts on Silena, and her femininity!

Percy Jackson - objectively (not objectively), Percy is the most powerful character in the series. However, he could be a lot better, especially his character arc. Featuring: Percy's compassion, his hatred of Luke, and his straining relationship with Annabeth!

Katie Gardner - Katie, as the daughter of Demeter, is an incredibly powerful character and therefore deserves a spot. Plus, I think she's cool. Featuring: Katie's cool plant powers, her insecurity about herself, and her struggle to be recognized!

Leo Valdez - I happen to think fire is cool, and that Leo is an incredibly compelling character. He's not going to be a baby misogynist in my version, nor is he going to be particularly flirty. Featuring: Leo's cool fire!!!! but also his apprehension in using it, his (rightful) anger at Hephaestus, and his idea of himself in a world that's scared of him!

Frank Zhang - he's cool, he's interesting, and I am not going to make him an Asian stereotype! Featuring: Frank's hatred of seeming 'meek', his idea of being Asian in xenophobic New Rome, and his struggle of falling for someone who could kill him!

Hazel Levesque - she's interesting, especially as someone so young. But I'm going to make her act more her age, and also not have a weird age gap thing with Frank. They're not dating here. Featuring: her hate of all the responsibility that's being placed on her shoulders, her hesitant relationship with magic, with all its vices and virtues, and her dislike of her father, Hades!

Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano - she deserves it. Plus, she and Percy are parallels in my mind, more than Percy and Jason. Reyna's cool, and I loved her chapters in BOO, so more Reyna it is. Featuring: her seemingly insurmountable past, her stress to be perfect, and her relationship with a xenophobic New Rome!

and Grover Underwood - instead of Coach Hedge, I'm putting Grover in. Because I love him.

Relationships:

Drew/Katie - I love this ship. Plus, I think it's intriguing - two people from cabins vastly underestimated coming together to be amazing. Developing romance, and it's not established until the last book.

Percy/Annabeth - but not how you think! Percy and Annabeth both reconciling with how they don't like each other as much as they've been pushed together, and breaking up amicably but remaining friends.

Leo/Frank - tragedy here we come! Instead of having something like Jason/Piper where Jason leaves New Rome for CHB, Frank doesn't do that. He and Leo fall in love, get together, and then split, all on the Argo II. Frank can't leave New Rome, Leo can't go to New Rome. The perfect tragic romance, but with a glimmer of hope - maybe sometime, in the future, Frank and Leo can live together, outside of New Rome and outside of CHB. Plus, in chemistry - they're both afraid of fire, they both are insecure of themselves and their places in the world. They compliment each other.

Hazel & Frank - besties. They may be three years apart, but they are staunch best friends. Hazel teases Frank about Leo all the time.

Reyna & Percy - understand each other the way only people who know each other's situation in different fonts can.

Drew & Frank - East Asian mutual understanding! They bond over, although they're different places in East Asia, they're both living the experience of an Asian American/Canadian. They're living the immigrant dichotomy, and add on Leo to that kind of idea.

Katie & Hazel - they care so much about the people around them! I like the idea of Katie being Hazel's older sister figure in a way. Also, they bond over art. I don't make the rules.

Drew & Reyna - they're both incredibly logic-driven people, but whereas Drew is completely aware of her emotions and others', Reyna isn't, not as much. Also, they judge people together.

Katie & Leo - Katie and Leo are just the right kind of combination of sweet/overly excited ever. Katie helps remind Leo he needs a break, and Katie is always happy to just listen to Leo ramble on and on about something, as long as she can draw while he's doing so.

Reyna & Leo - they get along pretty well, which is kind of a surprise at first. But they have a minorly antagonistic friendship, but they still work together.

Drew & Percy - they're judgemental besties. What else can I say?

Percy & Leo - they're incredibly similar people for obvious reasons. It's even acknowledged in canon!

Katie & Grover - they bond over their mutual love of plants.

Reyna & Grover - they both understand duty and passion to be similar, and they both understand the amount of pressure to be a leader from a young age.

etc. I'm not going to outline every one of their relationships, because I'm lazy.

Book One: The Lost Heroes

Here, I'm combining TLH with SON, because we need all the space for the other parts of the series. It oscillates between Reyna, Leo, Drew, and Katie's quest, and Percy, Hazel, and Frank's quest. I never really liked how Annabeth didn't really do anything for the first two books, considering she's a main character for the last three, so everyone gets a quest. This makes the quests more condensed, and more in the length of the original PJO series, in terms of book size. Percy, Hazel, and Frank's quest stays mostly the same, albeit with a bit of condensing, whereas Reyna, Leo, Drew and Katie's quest changes a lot. It follows the same blueprint, but they don't meet with the Hunters at any point, and Khione and Medea and Drew are set up as intentional parallels to explore what Drew could be in the future.

Book Two: The Promise of Aphrodite

Yes, I'm deliberately changing it from the Mark of Athena to the Promise of Aphrodite. This time, they visit Troy first. I know, weird, but the Argo II in this book is slightly quicker at getting places. It stays mostly the same, with the storyline, though, although I'm removing the part where the Argo II needs repairs. However, Troy is, of course, where Aphrodite's biggest folly was, with Paris and Helen. Drew follows it, and at the end, Percy and Drew fall into Tartarus because of Drew needing to metaphorically bring down Aphrodite's legacy, the legacy of hatred (woo symbolism!), because they've become friends over the course of the book, and also angst potential. It also shows Percy and Drew's newfound friendship, and I want them to be something that isn't just romance in Tartarus. Also, Nico is here.

Book Three: The House of Hades

This time, the entrance to the doors is in Rome. So they go to Rome, fully intent on this. Nico comes out to Hazel in a sweet, private moment, because I want Nico's coming out to not be homophobic, and this is prompted by Nico seeing Hazel tease Frank about Leo, and him realizing that Hazel, and most of the demigods, might not have the same strong homophobia. Katie stresses over Drew in the Underworld, and Grover stresses over Percy, especially, but they're all stressing. Annabeth's moment of realizing about the pen part of Riptide is given to Drew, whereas Percy realizes about the M&Ms. This time, Jason makes the trek out to the Argo II instead of Reyna, and Jason, Grover, and Nico bring Reyna's purple cloak - a symbol of power and peace - back to CHB with CJ waiting to fight.

Book Four: The Blood of the Gods

Yes, it's The Blood of the Gods now, because reasons. This time, there isn't any huge 'one girl and one boy demigod' thing. Instead, it's 'one Greek and one Roman demigod'. Everything is more or less the same, but with different characters, so different things happen. In Athens, Reyna and Percy are the ones who bleed instead of Annabeth and Percy, because they're foils and stuff. However, this book balances nine POVs, as each book has at least seven POVs. Because... stuff. At the end of this book, the Greeks and Romans decide to reconcile temporarily to win together against Gaea.

Book Five: The Goddess of the Earth

All-out war! Finales only mean so much if they're actually finales. TLO was such a fun read because it's an actual war. Therefore, The Goddess of the Earth is a full-on war. Unlike normal, Gaea is slow to wake, and her power is more emphasized. It's also the Romans being lead together with Reyna and Jason, Percy and Annabeth, and it also leads to a lot more ability to develop these relationships. The lovely Piper-and-Jason scene at the end of BOO, where they're on top of the cabin in the stars, is given to Katie and Drew instead, because Aphrodite kids are like that. Annabeth and Percy, already having broken up, talk together. Nico can have a moment where he realizes his self-worth, and exclude romance in his future for now. And Frank and Leo have that heartbreaking conversation where they talk about how they can't be together. Anyway, peace.

“Well. That was a huge waste of time,” Connor said, letting out a long breath the second they were away from the Big House.

“What do we tell the kid?”

Connor closed his mouth. “What.”

Travis looked at him like he was plain stupid. “The kid. Nico. What do we tell him?”

“Tell him—?” Connor asked, perplexed.

Travis made a frustrated sound in the back of his throat, pinching his face together. “I know you can be Connor sometimes and worrying about other people isn’t exactly natural for you, but surely, even you can understand how delicate of a situation this is: his sister was nominated for a quest. A quest she’s unprepared for. A quest where she might die.”

“Might is doing a lot. She is going to die.”Connor shrugged. “And I don’t see how that’s our problem.”

“It’s our problem because Nico’s in our cabin,” Travis said. “Because you’re a head counselor.”

Connor snorted and rolled his eyes. “That only means something to you. I’m in it for the shower privileges.”

The pinched look on Travis’s face relaxed. “Yes. I’m trying to be a good head camp counselor because it’s my responsibility and I care for the kids even if they’re just passing through. And I don’t know, maybe, I care about Nico more than I should. You heard what Aphrodite said.”

Connor hesitated.

The goddess of love gave them a simple enough task. Give the shirt to the Hunters. She wanted nothing to stand in the way of Percy going on the mission. In gratitude, she had told them, when Nico gets his heart broken chase after him.

“Nico’s sister is leaving. She should be the one to tell him,” Connor said.

“We agree.” Travis folded his arms. “But I don’t think she will. She’s barely talked to the kid since she’s been here. Whatever her reason, I think the sooner the better. There’s been a lot of excitement tonight.”

Connor found himself nodding along. It had been a lot between the capture the flag game and the oracle deciding to take a midnight stroll.

“We can tell him in the morning during breakfast. There’s barely anyone else out,” Connor said.

“And we’ll tell…”

“Him the truth, Travis. That being a half blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways.”

Travis looked at him but Connor could tell he was somewhere else.

“What?” Connor asked.

“It’s just. I don’t know. I’m glad we have each other,” Travis said.

Connor’s grin widened, a warmth in his chest at the acknowledgement of them. “You’re such a chick.”

“Dick.” Travis’s face mirrored his own.

Together they walked the worn path back to their cabin. Thankfully the harpies had been warned of their meeting so they weren’t prowling around waiting to pick one of them off. Nico noticed them first.

He popped up from his spot on the staircase, beaming at them. He raced over. Drew followed at a slower pace.

“You’re not dead. That’s awesome! Look at what Drew got me. Look!” Nico shoved a plastic pack of cards in Connor’s face.

“Nico, I don’t think he can see like that.” Connor heard the smile in Travis’s voice.

A moment later Connor blinked rapidly. Nico chattered. “I’m sorry. It’s the limited edition Africanus Extreme expansion deck. It has Ananasi and Katobleps and Eshu, and so many others. I can’t wait to go back to Westover. Man, Donovan is going to be so jealous. Thank you, Drew.”

“I told you, Nico. It’s no big deal. I was going to give it to my brother for Christmas, but Mom got there before me.” Her eyes were bright as she did a half shrug.

“Very cool.” Travis placed a hand on Nico’s head, gently ruffling before leading him up the cabin. “And it’s way passed lights out. C’mon.”

“I don’t even know who my brother is anymore,” Connor said when they were alone.

Drew’s smile widened.

“He’s a cute kid,” Drew said. “There’s really nothing more to it. The meeting?”

“You’re going to have to keep an eye out for Silena. She’s fixin to fight every Hunter that looks at her funny.”

“Hmm. I’ll talk to the meatheads in Ares. Was it bad?”

“I’ve never heard of a good prophecy,” Connor said.

Drew glared at him, a hand on her hip. “Anything about Annabeth?”

Connor raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t look at me like that. She’s an annoying know-it-all with a self important stick jammed up her cooch. But. She’s Annie.”

“Your heart really has grown three sizes.”

“Why are you so annoying?”

Connor threw his head and laughed. “There wasn’t anything about Annabeth. It was agreed the Hunters would go with their chosen three, then Grover and Thalia would make up our two. Grover promised to search high and low for her.”

“So, Percy’s not going.”

“I think he believes that.”

Drew snorted. “He’s got it bad. Oh well. They’re pretty cute for being basic. I’ve got to go now.”

She waved goodbye to him, sashaying away.

The floorboards creaked in the dead of night. It was another reason Connor knew Nico wasn’t theirs. Most of their brothers and sisters don't make noise when they move kinda like an assassin or ninja. Nico's steps were loud and clumsy …

Connor lifted from his mountain of pillows.

“Wait.”

Connor moved close to the edge of the bed, he leaned over, staring at his brother long ways on the bottom bunk.

“Don’t follow him.”

“Werent you the one bitchin’ earlier about how we need to protect the rugrat and swaddle him like he's the newborn baby Jesus?”

Connor couldn't see it but he knew his brother rolled his eyes. “OK, smartass. One day, you and I are gonna sit down and talk about the words compassion and empathy. Anyway, I'm saying we don't follow him because what if he’s seeing his sister.”

“And what if he’s running away with his sister because he learned the truth?”

If he ever found out Travis was going on a quest, he’d follow him in a heartbeat.

“That’s his choice.”

Connor laughed. “The monsters sure will be lucky when the di Angelo’s step passed the boundary. It’s like a two for one deal.”

“Would it kill you to show optimism?”

“Probably.”

“Just leave it. The kid needs some privacy.”

Connor pulled back from the edge and settled on his pillows. He got comfy. It was whatever. If Nico wanted to run away then that was his decision. If the Gods were kind he’d be eaten two seconds alongside his dumbass sister.

It would save them the trouble of having their hopes and dreams die a slow and torturous death.

The next morning Bianca and Percy were nowhere to be found and Nico was parked between them swinging his legs as he picked off his fruit salad, bright eyed and bushy tailed as always.

“I have a secret,” he announced.

“Do you now?” Connor buttered his toast.

“Well, I’m not supposed to tell,” Nico’s voice dropped. “Percy might get in trouble.”

“You can trust us,” Travis said as sweet as a sinner in church. Connor nodded.

Nico beckoned them closer. His curious dark eyes darted between their faces. “Percy went on the mission with the Hunters even though he wasn’t supposed too. He promised he would protect Bianca, my sister. I lied to Mister Chiron and he believed me.”

It was adorable how Nico thought he pulled the wool over the eyes of a kid-trained thousands year old being. Travis gave him a look, which told him not to break the fantasy. He was no fun.

“Really?” Travis grinned. “That’s awesome!”

Nico nodded practically purring with self importance.

“But you know Bianca can still get hurt?” Connor asked.

“I know that. That’s why Percy’s going with her. Percy’s the strongest demigod ever. You should have seen him when he was fighting.” Nico mimicked holding a sword slicing the air with his cutting edge noise effects. “He’s a hero! No one can stop him. As long as he’s there nothing bad will happen!”

Did you hear the sound of that flush? There it was. The script of them gently breaking the news of Bianca’s almost sure death just flushed down the toilet with this hero worship crap.

Connor caught the startled look in Travis’ eye and the twitching smile he struggled to keep. He had really fallen head over heels for the kid if he wasn’t prepared to yank him back down to reality.

“Percy’s pretty strong,” Connor agreed around a mouthful of toast. “And he always manages to come back from pretty dire situations. He’d probably crash his own funeral. He’s like a roach now that I think about it. Those things could survive a nuclear blast.”

Nico nodded. He picked off the last remaining pieces of strawberries and blueberries. “I’m all done. Can I go shoot arrows with Drew?”

“Go on,” Travis said softly. “Meet us back at the pavilion at noon.”

Nico headed over nearly tripping over his own feet in his excitement. Without a care in the world.

Travis groaned, he slumped onto the wooden table. His fingers tapped a nervous rhythm.

Connor continued to eat his breakfast. He’d never budge on his opinion even years down the line. They should have told Nico the truth.

Sometimes people made promises they could not keep. Sometimes the best of heroes failed.

It took until the fourth one to connect the dots. Hearing his mother's voice, calling him to go to the living room, to watch the news…

Hearing the news reporter saying, "Another student went missing from Stony Brook University. Tom Payne, 18, is suspected to be gone since Tuesday. He was the fourth student to go missing in this university, and up until now authorities are still trying to catch the perpetrator…"

It all clicked.

Tom Payne, 18, majoring in marine biology, silver medal swimmer-

The guy, who asked him out on a date, then before they could have agreed on a day that was working for the both of them, ghosted him.

No. Not ghosted him. He went missing.

Just like Kate Spencer, James Reed and Anne Bancroft did, soon after they told him they were attracted to him, and wanted to date him.

The common point between these seemingly very different people was - besides all being SUNY students -, him.

Of course, there could have been another common factor, or it could have been a weird coincidence, but as a demigod, he was too attuned to this kind of weirdness that he knew he was right. Once again something bad was happening, and he, Percy Jackson was in the middle of it.

The ring of his monster-proof cell phone brought him back to reality. The news was over, but his mother was sending him anxious looks from the kitchen. She also suspected something weird was happening, weirder than four college kids' random disappearances, and ever since he was the missing person the news was talking about, she took things even more seriously.

"Hey, I just heard. Are you okay? You weren't attacked right?" The worried voice of Nico warmed his heart, never getting quite used to the fact that now they had a working, close relationship. He noticed his mother perking up, obviously hearing Nico through the phone, ready to hear if they knew something more than the media. If it was god-related. Well, and because she had a soft spot for Nico. She liked his friends well enough, but she never failed to make it clear that gods didn't have DNS, so they weren't really cousins.

Percy could barely hide his blush, just by thinking about it. His mom was right, and Percy wouldn't have cared about it either, but the 'You are not my type' still resonated in his ears. There was no point in wishing for more.

Maybe for the better, because if what Percy suspected was true - Nico might have also been in danger if the perpetrator knew about him.

"Yes, no, I'm fine. Just… poor Tom. He was such a good guy," he sighed. He might not have felt anything for him, just wanting to date him because he felt like he should, but he liked him. They were both on the swim team, all of their classes were together, and they were on friendly terms. It was hard to imagine him gone. Dead, probably.

With demigods, there was always an underlying threat in their lives. If they went outside of Camp Half-Blood, or New Rome, there was a chance they would never get back. But with mortals? With mortals, Percy never really expected to be the one surviving their friendships. And now he lived through four. He wasn't kidding himself that they were alive.

"Did you know him?" Nico asked, something strange resonating in his voice.

"Yeah… I… I knew all of them. I was the closest to him, though," Percy confessed. Sally stopped at the vegetable chopping, staring at him with concern, horror on her face.

"What? Percy!" She shouted, as did Nico. "What do you mean? You never mentioned that you knew them," she demanded.

"I didn't connect it before. I mean, I know a lot of people in the uni, with the classes, swimming team, volunteer work, and the study groups, so I didn't find it odd. But… Okay, so, all of the four of them had confessed to me not long before they went missing."

It was so silent that they could have heard it even if a pin dropped.

"Oh, gods," his mother sobbed.

"Did they?" Nico whispered, something dark in his voice, but before Percy could question the strange comment, Nico stated what the three of them were thinking about. "So it might have connected to you. Fuck."

"Yeah… my thoughts exactly."

"Okay, listen to me," Nico said. "Don't try to find them, okay? Don't go around, trying to find clues, or don't talk to people. Preferably, don't even go outside, or just come back to camp…" Before he could finish it, Percy cut him off.

"I'm not going to sit on my ass and do nothing while my friends are going missing!"

"Perseus Jackson!" His mother shouted, slamming the knife down on the counter. "This is the matter for the police! Whoever did this, might be coming for you, and while I can't do anything against the whims of gods, mortal matters are different!"

"Listen to your mother, you can't do anything about this. Do you want me to visit you? Maybe if I…"

"NO!" Percy shouted before Nico could finish his offer.

"Ah," the son of Hades breathed, and Percy knew by the sound of that little noise that he hurt the other.

"No, it's not because I don't want to see you! It's just… if whoever is doing this is targeting my friends, people who are close to me, I don't want to paint a bullseye on your back!" Percy explained, and Sally nodded. Of course, she understood.

"Percy…" Nico started, but then sighed and continued differently. "Okay. But please, don't do anything stupid. Don't try to play detective. Monsters may be scared of you by now, but humans don't know you. I don't want you to get hurt. Promise me, you won't do anything."

Percy didn't want to lie, not to her mother, not to Nico.

But he said, "Okay. I promise."

He was a lying liar who lied.

He did something stupid, obviously.

He went to look after clues, obviously.

He got into trouble, obviously. Just not into the trouble he was expecting. It was… he was not sure what he was expecting, but it was definitely something human, something ordinary, something that he could fight off alone-

It was not that.

"You sure it's… he might… the gods?" Snippets of conversation caught his ears as he drifted in and out of consciousness. He was trying to remember what happened after he reconstructed what happened to Tom on the day he disappeared, but it was hard to get a good grasp on his memories.

Heavy eyelids fluttering, he could only catch blurry glimpses of the place he was and the people he was with, but everything felt fami-

Oh.

Oh, gods.

His heart lurched in his chest, the world turned around in front of him. It was not happening. He felt like he was floating, but his limbs felt like granite, too heavy, too rigid. Budging them even for an inch was too much work, too difficult. Everything felt dream-like, surreal, like a fantasy, but he knew it was real.

The prick of a needle, the little scar it left on his skin was real.

They were real.

"Percy! Ah, finally you are awake!" Drew beamed, caressing his tangled hair, and Percy let her. If he'd had enough energy, he would have snorted - it's not like he had the strength to even move his head, what else could have he done then let her?

"Perce?" Nico appeared in his vision. "How are you feeling? The drug we used should have dampened your powers, but if you feel sick, we can give you something to counter the side effects." The son of Hades cupped Percy's face, and he let it. He let everything. The drug's effects were wearing off, but the powerlessness wasn't because of that. He, himself, felt bereft, useless.

"Shh, it's okay. You are safe with us. We are not a threat to you, we just had to make sure you don't get into any troubles," Nico explained. "You broke your promise to me," he sighed, disappointed and betrayed, and Percy was thrown back to the time when he had to tell a cute little child that his sister was dead, that he couldn't keep his promise.

"I'm sorry," he whined.

"Oh, Perce… It's okay. It's okay, we got you now. From now on, we will take care of you!"

"Of course, we will!" Drew chimed in. The two of them were caressing him, gently, lovingly, nothing like how they must have dealt with the four college kids. But their eyes were devouring him, burning him alive. "We tried to do it from the shadows, but we should have expected that you would get into trouble without us. We know you, it's not your fault that you wanted to be the big hero we all know you are." She said all of it with complete sincerity, the usual contempt on her face gone, only fondness shown. Blood rushed to his face, and he felt he was the worst person in this world. They killed at least four people, and kidnapped him-

Yet he still wanted their approval. Their attention.

Their love.

He always felt something for Nico, something unexplainable attraction, something that went beyond friendship, kinship, everything. And since Nico and Drew became almost inseparable - after almost a year of passive-aggressivity -, he started to become so fond of her too. She was bitchy and sometimes cruel, sure, but also honest and dependable. She was nothing like Piper painted her to be; she was just broken. Just like Nico.

Just like Percy.

Maybe that was why it seemed obvious now...

"She is right, we'll be so good for you," Nico said, mindlessly drawing figures on Percy's chest. "Will you let us love you? Take care of you? Adore you and spoil you?"

Percy swallowed, hard, a sound stuck in his throat. He wanted to protest, he wanted to deny, he wanted to run away-

But he nodded. He was selfish.

But that was okay. After all, they all deserved to be selfish.

Heat filled him, unbearable heat that could only be quenched by their touches.

"Yes," he moaned. "Yes, please."

"It's going to be so much fun!" Drew smiled with too many teeth. It should have been threatening, but all he could feel was affection for her, for her fierceness, for these two crazy people he loved so much.

He felt like Alice, jumping into the hole after the curious little white bunny who offered something new, something exciting. And like Alice, he didn't care about the possible dangers - he threw himself into the hole, bravely, gladly.
