The nine-banded armadillo I work with was being so cute I couldn’t help but show her off. Her name is Delilah and she was enjoying a morning sunbathing!

Animal of the Day!
Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Southern United States
Size (Weight/Length)- 6 kg; 58 cm
Diet- Insects; Fruits; Bird eggs
Cool Facts- Evident in its name, the nocturnal nine-banded armadillo sports 9 distinct lines on their osteoderm that allows them to curl into a ball. Eating almost exclusively insects, these armadillos rip into logs and hard soil in search of grubs, worms, and termites. Sleeping in burrows during the day, nine-banded armadillos carefully prepare multiple burrows as quick escapes throughout their territory. Despite living in the desert, nine-banded armadillos can hold their breath underwater for up to 6 minutes. To cross a river, they simply walk across the bottom or fill their stomach with air to float across.
Rating- 13/10 (A pig mixed with an anteater mixed with a roly-poly.)

Taking a Break

I say it found me because it came out of some heavy underbrush into the more open area where I was walking. It looked around, never saw me, and began to follow its nose around in search for some…
