genshin modern au cheat sheet
i’m planning to do more pieces set in this au, so i’ve put together a quick list of the characters i'm planning to write about/include!
there are three main groups here - the zhao family, the ragnvindr family and friends, and the Miscellaneous Pals™
(the next volume in this au is going to be a xiao piece, and that should be up within the next two or so days!)
Tumblr media
1. the zhao family
zhongli, 36: history professor at the local uni who also plays the guzheng very well, tea-enjoyer, a very proud and supportive dad who loves his kids more than anything in the universe - probably unironically has so many pictures of them in his wallet
xiao, 23: taking a degree in psychology at the local uni, has a cool motorbike, bit of a control freak, doesn’t like surprises, will drop-kick you if you look at him or his sister funny, wants a cat but his dad’s allergic, never really grew out of his emo phase
yanfei, 19: baby of the family, prodigy lawyer-in-training, far smarter than many people give her credit for, likes building snowmen, has to protect her unsuspecting dad from Evil Salespeople looking to make some extra money
xiao and yanfei are biological siblings, and zhongli adopted them when xiao was 11 and yanfei was 7. the circumstances of this adoption is a mystery that none of the zhao family members seem willing to divulge…
the zhao siblings can have a little bit of tragic backstory. as a treat.
basically they were born into poverty and often went hungry for days on end. biological parents were distant and neglecting (though not actually physically/emotionally abusive - yet.)
when xiao was caught shoplifting bread and fruit from a local grocery store so that he and yanfei could actually eat, both parents went ballistic and kicked him out the house in the middle of one of the coldest winters the town had seen
poor kid was practically freezing to death out there, and yanfei raised such a fuss back in the house that mum slapped her square in the face to get her to shut up, which xiao saw through the window, and he promptly decided that he Was Not Putting Up With This Shit for any longer
immediately went to a neighbour’s house and told them what was going on, neighbours promptly called cps, and an investigation was launched
parents were deemed unsuitable for raising kids and (after a lot of back and forth) the two kids were taken into care
meanwhile zhongli was kind of sad because he had no friends or family in this town and all he really did was write articles, read books, and mark work
then one of his co-workers mentioned hearing about xiao and yanfei’s story and it hit zhongli so hard that he immediately rang up the adoption centre and ended up taking them in
and from then on both yanfei and xiao were very happy and healthy because zhongli was literally the best dad ever and put everything into taking care of them
2. the ragnvindr family (+ friends)
diluc, 29: budding businessman who still works at his dad’s cafe but is looking to open up his own company some time soon, still buys himself juice in those little cartons with the straws, still doesn’t know how raising bread works?? how does it get bigger???
diona, 7: diluc’s adopted daughter who has her father firmly under her thumb, bit of a spitfire but can also be the sweetest kid ever, enjoys making ‘potions’ out of grass and flowers and water (diluc can and will actually drink these potions because his love for his daughter knows no bounds)
kaeya, 25: diluc’s idiot little brother who’s changed majors at least five times and still doesn’t really know what he wants to do, practises fencing and horse riding in his spare time like a nerd, spoils his niece rotten
lisa, 26: the first of kaeya’s three roommates, has a degree in english and could easily have gone on to become a leading scholar but chose to instead open a bookshop that gets way more business than expected because she’s pretty and men and women alike are all simps
albedo, 23: the second of kaeya’s roommates, bit of a genius, has already started his chemistry phd, is almost concerningly pale and exhausted at all times, has not gone a day without breaking one of the cups for at least two years
venti, 21: the third of kaeya’s roommates, studying music, acts way older than he is sometimes but is mostly just a child, asks at least one of his roommates to marry him every day without fail, was and still is both a music and a theatre kid
lisa’s actually the one who owns the roommates’ residence because it’s on top of her bookshop
i was going to keep the whole ragnvindr family trauma thing but i decided that diluc deserved to be happy in at least one au so the brothers are still happy brothers :D
unfortunately that means that i’ve transferred a lot of the family trauma over to diona
essentially her mother died when she was a baby and her father, draff, turned to alcohol to get him through the stress of raising a child alone. unfortunately this led to him drunk driving one day, and he crashed the car into one of the wall’s of diluc’s dad’s cafe.
draff died on impact since he was in the front seat, but three-year-old diona managed to pull through despite her injuries. one thing led to another, diluc ended up taking care of her for a bit while the authorities sorted the whole thing out, but then he got too attached and decided to adopt her permanently
now diona has a dad, three uncles and an aunt who are all willing to shower her with all the love she deserves :’)))))
3. the Miscellaneous Pals™:
xiangling, xingqiu, chongyun, 17: local high school kids, they’re all kind of dating each other, low-key got adopted by xiao at one point, guoba is xiangling’s guinea pig and they all have joint custody over him
barbara, bennett, razor, 17: also local high school kids, also kind of all dating each other (but a lot more tentatively), regulars at diluc’s cafe, almost never seen apart
lumine, aether, ??: they keep showing up here and there around town to climb a tree and just sit there throwing leaves at people on the streets, then disappear. no one knows who the fuck they are
tartaglia, 23: nicknamed childe by his friends, also known as Mr Moneybags, is always just hanging around the local uni campus but doesn’t actually study anything there. his real name is ajax, but he thought that was lame so he gave himself a cool new one
eula, 24: new teacher at the local high school, her father used to be headmaster and was notoriously cruel to his students so everyone’s kind of wary of her, but she’s just really sweet and wants the best for her pupils :(((
amber, 21: number one eula defender, teaches the younger kids at the local primary, likes bunsen burners a little bit too much, still can’t remember how to spell the word necessary
hu tao, 25?: shady local mortician who may or may not practise illegal things, was kind of dating yanfei at some point but zhongli sent her packing as soon as he realised who she was, no one knows what her deal is
xiangling’s already a budding master chef and has received several offers from culinary schools, xingqiu is planning to study literature/language at uni but also might just go straight to trying to get a book published, chongyun is going to continue the family tradition of studying the supernatural with maybe a side job at xiangling’s future restaurant so that he doesn’t end up with no money if he doesn’t get any supernatural work
barbara is planning to go to medical school and also sings/dances in her spare time, bennett still doesn’t know what he wants to do but is considering carpentry among other things, and razor is dead-set on working at either a zoo or an animal shelter when he’s older
tartaglia never leaves the house without at least three pocket knives and a water pistol. he’s never had to use them yet, but you never know...
eula and amber live together and are probably dating but they’ll both just dodge the question if you ask them about it
they’re most definitely together though because on eula’s birthday amber brought her entire class of little kids to say happy birthday and bring her flowers
(incidentally amber is diona’s teacher)

93 fun OC asks because why not (PT 1/2)
i’m splitting this up cus its a LOT, but it’s gonna be all 93 LMAO. courtesy of @lazysunjade. this one’s for YOU!
BASICS:
1. What is their gender?
Cis Male
2. What is their sexuality?
Bisexual
3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?
Silas means “the youngest”.. which is ironic really since he’s the oldest. He doesn’t really have many nicknames. He’s either just referred to by his first name or last name.
4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger? Which sibling are they the closest with?
Silas only has one sibling: Marcus. Silas is older than Marcus by about 4 years, but despite the age difference they are incredibly close with each other. Marcus is Silas’ best friend, without a doubt about it.
5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?
Silas was incredibly close with both of his parents while they were both still alive. His only other known relatives were his maternal grandparents, and he also had a positive relationship with them before they died. He had no other living known relatives.
6. What would they give their life for?
His family. No hesitation. Whether its for his brother or his kids, if he had to make the decision to sacrifice himself for their safety, he would do it.
7. Are they in a romantic relationship? With who? How did they meet?
Silas is/was(?) in a relationship with Miss Camellia Pineda. It’s a bit complicated at this point in time but you can reread how they met here!
8. What do they believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?
Part of him still believes in the old Greek myths of departing to the Underworld. But another part of him believes that nothing will really happen, considering he already had his second chance to experience something out of death and all as a vampire. It’s unsettling to him, to say the least.
9. What is their favorite color? Favorite animal?
He really likes deep shades of red. His favorite animal has always been the Black-Winged Kite, a small bird of prey that’s native to Greece.
10. What are some of their talents/skills?
Silas is a master of the arts. Throughout his whole existence, he’s studied multiple art forms, but the one’s he’s perfected are painting and sculpture. Besides that, he’s very proficient with hand-to-hand combat, specifically Pankration which is the Greek form of martial arts. He has an almost perfect memory, which comes from his special talent of being able to project his memories.
11. If they could make a mark on history, what would they like it to be?
He honestly really wouldn’t want to change much, but maybe he’d like to be credited for a certain famous sculpture that he made that doesn’t have a “known artist”.
12. How old are they? When is their birthday?
Silas is 2,346 years old and his birthday is March 20th.
13. What do they do for fun?
Silas likes to create art, whether its painting or sculpting something. He also really likes to read history books. He was asleep for a good portion of it, so he likes to read up on what he missed.
14. What is their favorite food? How often do they get to eat it?
Silas is honestly really simple when it comes to human food. He likes freshly made loaves of bread. He doesn’t eat it often, simply because of how specific he likes it. Its more of a special treat whenever he’s in the mood to make it himself.
15. What was something their parents taught them?
Silas learned how to tie simple sailors knots from his father at a young age, meanwhile he learned how to bake bread from his mother.
16. Are they religious?
In a way, he is still. He does believe in the Greek pantheon to an extent. With his rebirth as a vampire, he isn’t 100% sure anymore, but he tries not to think too hard on it at times. When it comes to practicing his religion, he makes offerings to the gods with every new season that comes.
17. Where were they born?
Athens, Greece
18. What languages can they speak? Where did they learn these languages?
Silas can fluently speak Greek, English, Spanish, and Italian. He learned Greek from his human life. When he woke up from his hibernation, he learned English, Spanish, and Italian over a span of 100 years from traveling and attending university.
19. What is their occupation?
Technically, he has none. He doesn’t necessarily need to work, but he does take freelance art jobs from the city whenever they’d like something from him.
20. Do they have any titles? How did they earn them?
No titles.. yet.
PERSONALITY:
21. What is their favorite thing about their personality?
He likes how patient he can be. His patience has been a gift, really, in moments of high stress and it really could have drastically changed things if he didn’t have it.
22. What is their least favorite thing about their personality?
He’s got the good ol “Montolvo Hot-Head” trait. It takes a lot to get him genuinely angry, but when he gets mad.. he gets MAD. He’s almost blind to it and reacts entirely all on emotions, as seen when he punishes all three of his kids for something only one of them did.
23. Do they get lonely easily?
I’d say he does. Especially with how attached he’s gotten to Camellia in such a short amount of time.
24. Do you know their MBTI type?
I think Silas would be ISFJ: the Defender. Protective, warm, and caring.
25. What is their biggest flaw? & 26. Are they aware of their flaws?
He’s too forgiving, almost to the point of being a total pushover. He’s taken a lot of shit, specifically just from his ex-wife Serafina, but he still gave her the courtesy of explaining herself to their kids instead of just telling them himself. In hindsight, he shouldn’t be giving so many chances to people who’ve only proven to continuously fuck him over. He is WELL AWARE of his flaws, and he’s taken responsibility for them.
27. What is their biggest strength? & 28. Are they aware of their strengths?
His sense of loyalty. Whether its to his family or someone who he’d consider as family, if he’s needed, he’ll be there. He’s aware of it, but he tries to humble himself and doesn’t really focus his attention on it that much. He’d much rather focus on improving his flaws.
29. How would they describe their own personality?
“Loyal, Protective... and boring.”
30. When frightened, will they resort to “fight” or “flight”?
It’s sorta a case by case thing, but he’s more flight than fight simply because of how strict vampire rules are in New Brando.
31. Does this character ever put somebody else’s needs before their own? Who do they do this for? How often do they do this?
uh, ALWAYS. He ALWAYS does this. He’s always putting other people before himself. He does it ESPECIALLY with his family and Camellia now.
32. What is their self esteem like?
He’s got a pretty average level self esteem. He doesn’t necessarily consider himself all that good-looking or interesting. He’s only recently gotten a confidence boost ever since he started dating Camellia.
33. What is their biggest fear? How would they react to having to face it?
His biggest fear is losing his kids. If he even loses ONE of them, he won’t be able to handle it. His guilt would consume him, and honestly, he’d probably just lose himself in order to be with them again.
34. How easily do they trust others with their secrets? With their lives?
Silas doesn’t really trust others with his secrets all that much. I mean look how long it took just for him to reveal the truth about the divorce. He’s the same way with his life. He only trusts a select few with that as well.
35. What is the easiest way to annoy them?
Just by being overly obnoxious and in his personal space.
36. What is their sense of humor like? Give an example of a joke they would find humorous.
“Dad, did you get a haircut?” “No, I got them all cut!”  He’s a dad. Dad humor is in his blood at this point.
37. How easy is it for them to say “I love you”? Do they say it without meaning it?
Silas will only say “I love you” to someone that ISN’T his family if he GENUINELY means it. If he doesn’t feel it from the instant spark, then odds are he’s not going to ever really come to say it.
38. What do others admire most about their personality?
He wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s extremely open to others and caring and protective.
39. What does their happily ever after look like?
Well I can’t just spoil that. It’s gonna be the ending!
40. Who do they trust most? Is that trust mutual?
Marcus, Angelina, and Camellia. That trust is all mutual.
PHYSICAL PROFILE:
41. What does their laugh sound like? Do they snort when they laugh? How often do they laugh?
Silas has this kind of hearty laugh. Its very warm and inviting. He’s been laughing a lot more lately with Camellia being a sort of light in his life.
42 & 43. What is their favorite & least favorite thing about their physical appearance?
He likes his hair. He thinks its the most interesting thing about himself, physically. He doesn’t really have a least favorite thing about his appearance? He just considers himself to be really average for the most part.
44. Do they have any scars? If so, what are the stories behind those scars?
He does not have any real noticeable scars.
45. How would they describe their own appearance?
“Tall, a bit on the skinnier side, and boring clothes.”
46. How easily can they express emotions? How easily can they hide emotions?
He tends to wear his emotions on his face really easily. He knows how to hide them though, but he chooses not to.

Tumblr media
So, I’ve always run into loons while dating, but with my SEEKING FRIENDS ONLY profile I talk to everyone, including people I’d never go near if looking. And my goodness, it’s everybody. Well, not everybody, but the INTERNET. After age 28 or so, EVERYONE IS A FUCKING WEIRDO. Mind you, I do not screenshot things from family, people I actually know, and real life people, but I definitely don’t mind talking some shit.
Dude above was from out of town and raving about Ocean City, MD, the resort near to me. I worked there for many years and remember a drunk biker getting killed on the road by my store. People looted his pockets and I got paid in bloody cash for weeks after that. Place has crime. Not the worst crime, but it’s a small area with too much of it. So I told the guy, just making conversation and he chirped that his uncle or whatever was a local cop and there was no crime. I said bullshit and linked him to local stats. I mentioned there was a lot of theft, assault, and rapes. Dude asks me, “why, were you raped?” What the hell? I told him that wasn’t classy of him to ask, and I said, “you aren’t a local and you’re just defending the place without facts.” etc. Then he throws out that charming line that he’s a virgin at 30!
What exactly are people’s realities? I either run into bug-eyed staunch liberals screaming that men farting is a form of sexual assault or these religious Neanderthals that think abortion is murder. I had to think about why the guy asked me if I had been raped, then it kind of hit me, my profile says I wasn’t looking for sex which has made some people ask me if I was a virgin. So maybe I’m projecting but the dude was probably making sure I was “pure.” I’ve had extremist religious folks tell me before that women that have been raped are impure and must be forgiven. Okaaaaaaaay then, that makes so much sense? Anyway the guy asks me out the next day and I’m glad he couldn’t see me laugh.
Sexual preferences and choices are personal. If you’re a virgin, you do you, and figure out what you want to do or not do with it. But honestly, I think that once you get past 23 you’re barking on unhealthy territory unless you have severe physical or mental disabilities, etc., and extreme religion is never healthy.
Yesterday I was pooping around on Reddit and someone was explaining that being a Satanist meant you were simply non-conforming and not being a part of traditional religions. Okay, but you’re still following something and conforming to that. It is still a crutch and you are still brainwashed by it to a degree, just like any other religion. And if you’re so about being neutral, why Satan of all things? Say what you will, but that’s a historically bad name. Why not create the Church of Cuddly Puppies? Or better yet, THINK FOR YOUR FUCKING SELF and don’t use any religion.
Alright, so we’ve covered oppressed religious weirdos. Next: The Wannabe Old People. 35-45 year old women that try to mother me, and 35-45 year old men that act like I’m 5 generations beneath them. In 2017, aged 28, I had a date with a dude, 36 and it went well. Didn’t see him again because of distance but added him on FaceBook and he sees my pinup shots and is like “my goodness, young lady” and made sure I was behaving safely around men. Dude, what? “Young lady?” I’m not going to rip apart the one dude but these days I’m still being hit up by guys in that age range calling me that. Like I said, 35-45. I’m 31 and don’t think 35 is that far away. But what the fuck do I know? 40-50 is not “old” but when you look down upon younger people, even in a fatherly way, it ages you, and is usually creepy. Don’t do it! You can’t date someone or be their friend unless you consider them to be your equal and I do not have daddy issues.
LASTLY, and the most common theme I’ve dealt with lately, the MOPERS. “No one will ever want me... I keep looking... My exes were just horrible people. There’s no hope.” That shit. I have some terrible exes, the most notable of which tried to literally kill me then made my life a living hell. And I talked about it too much, I was/am traumatized. I still bring it up too much, like now. But, seriously, mopers like this guy: https://www.reddit.com/r/relationships/comments/jxko56/ive_tried_everything_to_get_love_and_affection/
You cannot let the past define your future, get counseling if you have to. I’m not going to claim to be an example of mental health or success but when I’m with my family, we laugh and joke. When I talk to my friends I might vent about my day but I care about how they are and we talk social topics and “hey man, have you had that new croissant crust pizza yet?” @ Jay lol.
I don’t bombard people with how my bad exes fucked me over or how I have no hope. Because there is hope if you make it. Luck with people may never be all that spiffy, even for me, but you have a whole world of options out there to make yourself happy somehow, even if you have to take mental health steps like counseling or medication. I know too many people that wouldn’t take medication  that clearly made them better for depression and other issues and it ruined their lives. The mind is just as important as the body, folks. Never feel ashamed about getting help, I’ve been in counseling and could always use more myself.
So, y’all, how about we all just vibe out, look in the mirror, and think for ourselves?
Happy Thanksgiving.

Character Questionnaire: Arthenni Stonecutter
BASICS - 1. Height?     3′2″. (I know.) 2. Eye colour?     Dark brown. 3. Do they need glasses?     No. 4. Scars and birthmark?     None. 5. Tattoos and piercings?     Basic ear piercings. 6. Right or left handed?     Right handed. 7. Any disabilities? Physical or mental.     None. 8. Do they have any allergies?     Things can get pretty rough on her during pollen season. There wasn’t as much pollen to deal with in the underdark. 9. Favourite colour?     Royal blue. 10. Typical outfits?       She doesn’t spend too much time thinking on her outfits. Just anything comfortable for the day. 11. Do they wear any makeup?       Not much. 12. What weapon do they use, if any?       She primarily defends herself with her magic. She could handle a dagger or a crossbow if she needs to.
PERSONALITY - 13. Are they more optimistic or pessimistic?       She’s realistic. Optimistic when the odds seem good, pessimistic when the odds seem bad. 14. Are they introverted or extroverted?       Introverted for sure. 15. What are their pet peeves?       When people fold the corners of books to save their place. Stop that! You’re creasing the pages! And stop eating when you’re reading a library book! And due dates are there for a reason-- 16. What bad habits do they have?       I don’t know if she would consider it bad, but she puts salt on everything she eats. An excessively sickening amount by anyone else’s standards. It’s what she’s used to from her home. Watch out if you sneak any food from her. 17. Do they have any phobias?       She’s not a fan of thunderstorms. It wasn’t something you dealt with living underground and they just seem so immense and scary when they happen. 18. How do they display affection?       Mostly through little actions. Picking up that muffin from the bakery that she knows they like on her way home. Sitting and listening to them talk about their favorite book in the world even if she’s never read it. Just being appreciative of her significant other being around and enjoying their company.
19. How competitive are they?       Depends on what the competition is. If it’s an academic competition, then she’s very competitive to come out on top. Competition in the secrets world hasn’t really been prominent yet for her, but she would be competitive in that too if it becomes an issue. 20. If they could change one thing about themselves, what would it be?       She’s pretty comfortable with herself and how she is. After 86 years, you get that way. There would be times where being more outgoing and confident in herself would be beneficial, though. 21. Do they have any obscure hobbies or routines?       She does like to find old diaries and journals from people long past in the archives of the library to read. Some might consider them boring, but she finds it fascinating to be able to open someone’s life and thoughts so easily. And, of course, cheesy romance novels are good too.
BACKSTORY - 22. What are the names and ages of their close family members? Parents, siblings, etc.      All of that isn’t something she’d share lightly. 23. Is their family alive and are they still in contact with them?       They’re still alive, and she does do Sending every once and awhile to say hello and check up on them.
24. Where are they from? City, nation?       She came from a pretty normal deep gnome town in the underdark. 25. Did they have a childhood best friend?       Not really. She didn’t fit in as easily with the other kids. Most of the kids were learning how to work in the mines and pick up the family business, and she kept herself tucked away with a pile of books instead. They were much better company, in her opinion. 26. Have they had any pets?       She had some of the typical pets growing up. A bat, a spider, the usual fare. Now that she’s on the surface and settled in, she wouldn’t be opposed to looking into getting a familiar.
27. Did they grow up rich or poor? What were their living conditions like?       She had a fairly comfortable upbringing. Comfortable enough to have the opportunity to read to her heart’s content, and to be able to leave for further education rather than stay in town. Not that she would’ve chosen to stay regardless. 28. What is their educational background?       She did get an educated upbringing. Most of it was provided by her own means, though. The town she came from focused more on practical skills, such as learning about the stone around them and how to work with it. Boring stuff. That was why it was more beneficial for her to head to the surface for education. 29. As a child, what did they want to be when they grew up?       A writer. That idea still isn’t entirely off the table. 30. What advice would they give to their younger self?       That you’re going to get to a way better place when you’re older. It’s okay to be frustrated with where you’re at right now, but there’ll be more out there. 31. Growing up, were they ever bullied or were they the bully?       She was the one who got bullied. Which is why books were so much better. 32. Who do they look up to/who is their role model?       She admires Thalra Hylune. The fact that Thalra willingly makes time for her and expresses confidence in her is wild. There’s also one or two romance novelist who she admires and would definitely go get an autograph from if they went on a book tour.
PRESENT - 33. Do they currently have a place of residence?       She currently primarily resides in Arx for her work with the Siang Institute and Destiny’s Archive. 34. What is their most treasured possession?        Most likely a rare edition book of some kind. Probably signed by the author. 35. What is their drink of choice?       Tea with lots and lots and lots of salt. There’s also a fermented fish drink that comes from her home that she misses, but no one up here on the surface can make it quite right. 36. Which king/queen are they loyal to, if any?       None. Loyalty is a very strong word, but she’s not a huge fan of the ones that keep propagating war and disrupting everyone’s lives. 37. Have they ever killed anyone?       Nope. 38. What was their last promise and did they keep it?        I think her last promise was to not tell anyone that Eobald was a client of Thalra’s, and she’s kept it. She doesn’t plan to break that trust. That can’t be promised for everything, though.
LOVE - 39. What was their first kiss like, if they’ve had one?       She’s never had one. 40. Are they in a relationship/have a love interest?       She’s not, and she doesn’t. 41. Have they ever been in love?       Maybe a little bit, once, but nothing ever came of it. 42. Have they ever had their heart broken?       Not really. Can’t get a broken heart if there wasn’t anything to start with, right?
SPIRITUALITY - 43. Do they follow a god, if so who?       Not at the moment. She wouldn’t be against it, though. Istus seems like a reasonable goddess from what she’s heard about her so far. 44. What do they think happens to them after death?       Something complicated, that’s for sure. She’s well-read, so she’s read all sorts of theories and legends about the topic. The concept of the planes seem to be the most valid. 45. What is their spirit animal?       If she went ahead with picking a familiar, I think she would go with either a rat or a raven. So one of those two. A raven sounds cooler.

really… Really... R E A L L Y… How very fcking BOLD of you 😂

Something that could probably end badly for us lol My friends and I always look back on our nights out saying to each other “atleast we didn’t die tho”

First, I’d cry. Then I’d go practice my aim peeing standing up lol

More often than not I’m cooking for myself, especially if I’m training because it’s cheaper eating healthy with homemade meals.
9. If you had to lose one of your senses, which one would you rather lose?
I need my sight, hearing, and touch for sure, and I already know how much it sucks to lose taste after my radiation treatments, so smell would have to go.

THE CHRISTIAN AND WAR
William D. Barrick Professor of Old Testament
Answering the question, “Should a Christian be a member of the military?” is the best way to elaborate on “The Christian and War.” On the positive side, the military emphasizes the importance of moral character for its leaders. On the negative side, the military is a profession in which killing may be a part of one’s responsibility. Four possible positions to take regarding this difficult issue are nonresistance, Christian pacificism, just war, and preventive war. Also at stake is the Christian responsibility to submit to governmental authority as indicated in Romans 13:1-7 and 1 Peter 2:13-17. New Testament analogies comparing responsibilities of Christian living with being a good soldier seem to point to the legitimacy of Christians being part of the military endeavor of their country. That plus other factors support a Christian’s being involved in military service. Yet the conscience of each Christian must prevail in making this difficult decision about the issue, “Should a Christian be a member of the military?”
* * * * *
Introduction The issue of war and Christian involvement in military service is so extensive that it is necessary to limit the scope of this study of “The Christian and War.” Its literature dates from the earliest years of church history,1 with a history too vast even to be summarized here. Obviously, biblical exegesis and Scripture rightly interpreted must inform any resolution of the issues. Therefore, at least to look at what the Bible has to say about the topic is imperative. A focus on one basic question is the best approach: “Should a Christian be a member of the military?”
Since the question deals with “a Christian,” the emphasis should be upon what the NT has to say about the matter. However, the question itself did not originate with the Christian church. Indeed, the issue predates the Christian era. Even in OT times believers faced the problem of involvement in war. Certainly Abraham had given some consideration to the issue prior to commencing armed action against Chedorlaomer’s coalition of kings (Genesis 14). He engaged the kings in battle in order to free his nephew Lot and his family.2 Since both testaments are the inspired Word of God and “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness,” 3 a consideration of the teaching of the whole of Scripture on this issue is in order. “If Christians are to have clear attitudes towards war, they must first come to some understanding of the subject in the Bible, including the Old Testament.”4 However, in order to keep within the length restraints of this article, the study will limit itself to what is revealed in the NT. The OT has much to say about war, but it is not often directly pertinent to the specific question upon which this study will focus.
Military service is a brotherhood of sorts because a fighting unit must be as one if it is to succeed under fire. It is a strange brotherhood since, in the passing of time, even enemies will regard themselves as having a bond forged in the horror of battle. That is why American and Japanese veterans can meet at Corregidor or Iwo Jima and British, American, and German veterans congregate on the beaches of Normandy fifty years after the fact and shed tears together for departed comrades in arms. Such a brotherhood, however, is not the supreme brotherhood that believers enter through the gospel of Christ.
Military service involves keeping faith with a vision for a nation’s freedom and greatness. Nothing less than total commitment is required of a soldier. Semper fi is more than a motto for the United States Marine Corps, it must be a way of life—and death. Without total commitment, a man or woman cannot serve as a good soldier in any army.
It is the modern military that finds new slogans that emphasize personal development and individual potential. “Be all that you can be” does not focus on selfless commitment to one’s nation. Such a trend is not unlike the transition experienced in churches that offer a need-based ministry rather than upholding selfless commitment to the Word of God and the cause of Christ.
This push for personal development is associated with a renewed emphasis upon core values and ethics in the military. Every member of the United States Army carries a laminated card entitled “Army Values.” On it are the following words:
Loyalty: Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit, and other soldiers. Duty: Fulfill your obligations. Respect: Treat people as they should be treated. Selfless-Service: Put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own. Honor: Live up to all the Army values. Integrity: Do what’s right, legally and morally. Personal Courage: Face fear, danger, or adversity (Physical or Moral).5
Both of my sons serve in the American military. Nathan is now a major in the Army and Timothy is a captain in the Marine Corps. Both have made it clear that moral character is vital to proper military leadership and that values-training in the current military is something that committedChristian officers are uniquely qualified to teach. General John A. Wickham, a past Army Chief of Staff, wrote about the importance of moral character for military leaders. He noted that “one does not develop character in the heat of battle or a moment of crisis. Character grows out of the steady application of moral values and ethical behavior in one’s life.”6 The Christian home and Bible-teaching churches are the best institutions for producing individuals with high moral values and consistent ethical behavior.
If moral character were the only issue, Christians would find military service a simple decision. However, the challenge is far more complicated than that. A number of arguments for a Christian to stay out of the military are as follows:
The military is a profession in which killing people may be a part of the job description.
The military can be a very worldly environment in which Christians can face all kinds of temptations. . . .
Jesus said to love your enemies. . . . In contrast, the military is about hitting the enemy before he hits you.7
Some of the hard things about being a Christian in the military include:
Family separation during deployments can make it tough on the family.
Family separation can be a source of temptation. . . .
It’s hard to be an evangelical witness on the job. . . .
There is a lot of peer pressure to drink alcohol, curse, and party “on the town” in places of ill repute.
You have to be politically correct. . . .
I might have to kill someone someday. . . .8
War is violent and terrible. During the American Civil War in 1862, Confederate troops held a low ridge called Marye’s Heights near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Union troops sent to assault Marye’s Heights had to cross exposed ground. Wave after wave of Union troops charged but were cut down before they could reach the Confederate lines. Over 12,000 were slain. Watching the battle, Gen. Robert E. Lee turned to Gen. James Longstreet, whose men were holding Marye’s Heights, “It is well that war is so terrible; else we would grow too fond of it.”9 Any man, woman, or child who has experienced the horrors of war firsthand knows how awful the toll of war can be. That toll is perhaps the strongest argument (outside Scripture itself) for devoting time to an examination of the Christian’s involvement in the military.
The violence of military conflict creates a natural tension with the normally peaceful nature of Christian living. One must not forget the significance of nonviolence in Christian character and behavior, but must remember the following biblical truths:
Non-violence is preferable to violence (cf. Rom 12:17-21).
Non-violence is more consistent with Christian morals (cf. Matt 5:9, 38-48; 1 Tim 3:3)
However, the Scriptures themselves do not allow the believer to seek peace at any price (cf. John 2:13-17; Acts 23:1-10; 1 Cor 4:19-21; Gal 2:5-14; Eph 5:11; 2 John 9-11; 3 John 9-10). Granted, the situations to which Scripture passages refer are nonmilitary in nature. However, there is a line to be drawn when standing up to the forces of evil. There are occasions in the course of Christian life when there cannot be peace—when it would be unchristian to compromise or to fail to act unpeaceably toward someone. Sometimes Christians shun confrontation while using Christian love, compassion, and mercy as an excuse. That can result in direct disobedience to Scripture—as in the matter of exercising church discipline against a sinning brother or sister in Christ.
Francis Schaeffer declared that “to refuse to do what I can for those under the power of oppressors is nothing less than a failure of Christian love. It is to refuse to love my neighbor as myself.” 10 He went on to say that was why he was not a pacifist: “Pacifism in this poor world in which we live—this lost world—means that we desert the people who need our greatest help.”11 Peace at any price is never right, whether it is in the realm of spiritual warfare, church discipline, or government.
Does a posture in defense of truth and morality include military action? Christian apologists have offered four major views in the search of answers to this question.
Four Views
Nonresistance. The title chosen for this view reflects the words of Matthew 5:39: “Do not resist him who is evil.”12 However, although physical force may not be employed to resist evil, spiritual means may be enlisted to combat evil (cf. Luke 6:27-36; Rom 12:21; 2 Cor 10:3-4; 2 Tim 2:1-2; Jas 4:7; 1 Pet 5:8-9). In this view the Christian is dedicated to the work of the gospel as his/her highest priority as a citizen of a heavenly kingdom. One may pray for peace and must support the government, but must never be involved in any action that takes the life of another human being. If the unbelieving government needs to fight a war to fulfill its obligations to defend its citizens, let it do so, but no Christian should be an active member of combat troops.13 Christians holding this viewpoint ought to request non-combatant status when fulfilling a military obligation.14
Christian pacifism.15 The basic philosophy undergirding the nonresistance view is also foundational to the Christian pacifist viewpoint. The key difference is that the Christian pacifist will not serve in the military in any role. Whereas the nonresistance adherent may serve in a non-combatant role, the Christian pacifist must be a conscientious objector.16 Views that tend to pacifism rest upon texts in the Sermon on the Mount (cf. Matt 5:9, 21-26, 38-48). This viewpoint also relies on the Scriptural background of Matthew 5:21 in Exodus 20:13/Deuteronomy 5:17.17 The Christian pacifist believes that Christians are called upon to counteract this world’s warlike tendencies by promoting the spiritual love and peace which Christ exemplified.
Just war. Adherents to the just war viewpoint have sought to establish guidelines to ensure the exercise of the military option in a just fashion. Those criteria include the following:18
A just cause is basically defensive in posture, not aggressive.
The intent must also be just—the objectives must be peace and the protection of innocent lives.
War must be a matter of last resort when all attempts at reconciliation or peaceful resolution are exhausted.
A just war must be accompanied by a formal declaration by a properly constituted and authorized body.
The objectives must be limited. Unconditional surrender or total destruction are unjust means.19
Military action must be proportionate both in the weaponry employed and the troops deployed.
Non-combatants must be protected and military operations must demonstrate the highest possible degree of discrimination.
Without a reasonable hope for success, no military action should be launched.20
Although the just war position may seem fairly straightforward, it is, in reality, a very complex matter. Consider the possible combinations and interrelationships of the factors: (1) unjust cause and just means; (2) just cause and unjust means; (3) unjust cause and unjust means; and, (4) just cause and just means. Remember, too, that all of these possible combinations apply to at least two different sides in the conflict: friend and foe.21 How should each of the criteria apply to each side in the conflict? “Since human beings of a mind and will are involved on both sides of a conflict, it is often hard to determine what is the just cause in asserting or shunning a ‘just’ hegemony.” 22 War is never simple. It is always complex. It is not a blackand-white matter, nor even gray—if anything, it is blood red.
Preventive war. This view is an extension of the just war position. It supports preemptive action or first-strike options (even with nuclear weapons, when necessary) if an enemy’s aggression is thought to be imminent and unavoidable. Preventive war adherents also advocate the use of military force to recover territory unjustly seized by an aggressor.23 Indeed, such aggressors may be struck without warning while they are residing in their conquered territory in apparent peace.
Governmental Authority in the New Testament Just war advocates normally base their position on passages revealing the divine origin and approval of government and its functions. Romans 13:1-7 is the cornerstone of this viewpoint. Consider a question in regard to this important text: May Christians wield the government’s biblical sword? The apostle Paul represents the government as a divinely constituted authority (vv. 1, 2).
It was to Paul a matter of little importance whether the Roman emperor was appointed by the senate, the army, or the people; whether the assumption of the imperial authority by Caesar was just or unjust, or whether his successors had a legitimate claim to the throne or not. It was his object to lay down the simple principle, that magistrates are to be obeyed.24
Even though the civil and military assets of the Roman Empire would be employed to slaughter Christians, the Holy Spirit directed the apostle to instruct believers in Rome to submit to the Roman government. Even though the emperors of Rome lived profligate livessteeped in immorality and debauchery, their authority was legitimate. Every believer was to submit to that authority unless the demands of that government directly contradicted divine command (cf. Acts 5:29). All other “resistance is a violation of God’s law and meets with judgment.”25 According to Everett Harrison, the seeming contradiction of Romans 13:1-2 and Acts 5:29 might be handled in two different ways: (1) assume that the apostle merely presents the norm stripped of any possible biblical exception26 and (2) apply the principle of Romans 8:28, trusting that God eventually will “bring good out of apparent evil.”27
The text is also explicit on the role of God-ordained governmental authority: the sword is to be employed in avenging28 wrong (vv. 3, 4). As John Murray explains,
The sword is so frequently associated with death as the instrument of execution (cf. Matt. 26:52; Luke 21:24; Acts 12:2; 16:27; Heb. 11:34, 37; Rev. 13:10) that to exclude its use for this purpose in this instance would be so arbitrary as to bear upon its face prejudice contrary to the evidence.29
Government cannot be passive nor can it avoid actions that might involve the taking of life in order to accomplish its Scriptural mandate. “The Biblical state protects against tyranny from within (crime) and tyranny from without (invasion).” 30 Interestingly, this fact is recognized by all four major views concerning Christian involvement in the military. For some, however, the Christian must not take part in any avenging action, although they would allow non-Christians in the government to do so.
Subjection to governmental authority is not just to avoid punishment for civil disobedience. Subjection is a matter of maintaining a good conscience with regard to one’s obligation to God (v. 5).31 This involves active monetary support for the government by all legitimate forms of taxation (v. 6). Not even the Christian pacifist is given the option of refusing to support the government financially in its military actions.32 Whether the Christian is on the front lines of battle pulling the trigger or serving as a non-combatant or remaining at home as a conscientious objector, each must pay the taxes for that war. By those taxes, every Christian is a participant in that war and the killing that takes place in its progress. An interesting fact is that the very taxes that Paul exhorted the Roman Christians to pay eventually financed Paul’s own execution.
Paul was not the first to experience this irony. Christ Himself ordered the payment of taxes to Caesar and was put to death by Roman soldiers paid by those taxes. Historically, the church has carefully defined a balance of duty for Christians in these matters. Augustine’s statement is representative:
So if anyone thinks that because he is a Christian he does not have to pay taxes or tribute nor show the proper respect to the authorities who take care of these things, he is in very great error. Likewise, if anyone thinks that he ought to submit to the point where he accepts that someone who is his superior in temporal affairs should have authority even over his faith, he falls into an even greater error. But the balance which the Lord himself prescribed is to be maintained: Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s but unto God the things which are God’s (Mt 22:21).33
First Peter 2:13-17 lends support to the submission so carefully delineated in Romans 13:1-7. Peter states quite clearly that such submission is the will of God (1 Pet 2:15). The one who rebels in this area rebels against God. Although this study focuses upon the matter of military service, recognition that the role of the civil police in society is also a function of the avenging arm of government is relevant. If a Christian must avoid military service, neither must that Christian be a police officer. Christian pacifists sometimes attempt to distinguish between police action and military action, allowing the former while denying the legitimacy of the latter.34
Does the NT give any examples of Christians acting as officers of government who bear the responsibility of wielding the avenging sword of Romans 13:4? Are they approved or disapproved? Were converts required to resign from such positions when they entered the early church? Consider the following:
Cornelius was a centurion, a military officer of high rank in a battalion of Roman fighting men (Acts 10:1). Although he was a soldier on active duty, he is described as “devout” (,ÛF,$ZH, euseb‘s, v. 2), a term that, at the least, describes a man of high moral character and piety. He became a convert to Christ and was baptized publicly (v. 48). The Scripture is silent about his status from that point on.
Sergius Paulus was a proconsul in the Roman government in Cyprus (13:7). A proconsul’s (a Roman provincial governor) authority included ordering the execution of criminals and deploying Roman troops in battle when needed.35 He became a believer (v. 12). The Bible gives no record of any resignation from his office upon becoming a Christian.
Erastus (Rom 16:23) was an active city treasurer even after his conversion. As a government officer he managed the funds that would be utilized in the execution of criminals and the payment of police. As an active official, he could be called upon to wield the Roman sword of authority both figuratively and literally.
Zenas (Titus 3:13) was an active Christian lawyer. In the Roman system of the courts, he played a role in the application of the avenging sword—the application of capital punishment.
Somewhat related to the matter of Christians bearing a sword is the instruction Jesus gave to His disciples for taking prudent measures for self-protection in Luke 22:36. Although it might seem at odds with His teaching in Matthew 26:52, it should be obvious that the two are not mutually exclusive. Luke 22:36 “more likely indicates, not a reversal of normal rules for the church’s mission, but an exception in a time of crisis (cf. ‘but now,’ alla nyn). Jesus is not being ironic but thoroughly serious.”36 In regard to this passage, Loraine Boettner declared, “If we lived under such conditions we would have occasion to become much better acquainted with weapons than we now are.”37
On the basis of the Gospels and the teachings of Jesus, a number of arguments supporting the believer’s participation in the military are the following:38
Jesus’s approval of a king who waged war against wicked people (Matt 21:33-41).
After Peter cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest (John 18:11), Jesus did not tell him to rid himself of his sword, merely to resheath it—for future use?
In John 18:36 Jesus stated that it would have been proper for His disciples to defend His kingdom with swords if it had been an earthly kingdom.
New Testament Analogy Throughout the Bible the Holy Spirit led the writers in the choice of legitimate metaphors for describing both the character of God and the character of the believer. It is axiomatic that inherently evil vocations or activities are not employed for such descriptions. The simile of the thief (1 Thess 5:4; 2 Pet 3:10; Rev 3:3; 16:15) in eschatological judgment is not an exception to this principle. The text does not say that the Lord is a thief, only that He will come as a thief comes (viz., unexpectedly). The metaphor of a thief is reserved for one who is anti-Christ (cf. John 10:1, 10).
The metaphor of warfare, armor, and the soldier himself is common throughout the NT. The Christian puts on the armor of God (Eph 6:10-20). Each believer is to be a “good soldier” (2 Tim 2:3-4). Believers are to be active participants in waging spiritual warfare (2 Cor 10:1-6). If being a soldier was as inherently wicked as being a prostitute, a thief, or a murderer, the Holy Spirit would not have permitted the writers of the NT to employ that metaphor.
It is hardly conceivable that the Scriptures should present the Christian life under a symbolism having to do so distinctly with soldiering and warfare and at the same time repudiate the reality for which that symbolism stands as always and everywhere wrong.39
In addition, that Christ Himself will engage in actual, blood-shedding, lifetaking warfare when He returns to set up His kingdom (Rev 19:11-21) is significant. He cannot be the Righteous One, the Holy One, if war is inherently evil and the combatant’s role satanic. When He comes, the Lord will instruct His people to engage in that future warfare (cf. Obad 15-21). Would He demand His people to commit sin? Of course not! Therefore, warfare cannot be inherently sinful.
Christians in Military Service Why should a Christian serve in the military?40 Are there any positive points to be advanced for such service? Soldiers at war are serving in a situation that can only be described spiritually as desperate. Men occupy a position where death is a real possibility for them to experience—a horrible and agonizing death by violent means. Such men are in desperate need of the gospel and the ministry of Christians. War itself creates an atmosphere of destruction and inhumanity. Violent deeds may bring out the very worst of the sinful nature’s traits. Christians may need to stand in the gap in order to maintain decency, order, and just action.
Such a thing as a just war may also occur. World War II could very well make the claim of being a just war.41 Doubtless, there are others and will be others. War is the result of sin (cf. Jas 4:1-2), but war itself is not necessarily sin. “The one who takes original sin seriously knows that life is lived on a descending escalator and that it is a tough job even to stand still.”42 It becomes all too clear to any sound theological thinking that the rejection of the employment of force might be a recipe for anarchy or tyranny attended by multiplied suffering and death for many innocent people. That is why all four major views of Christian involvement in war uphold the right of a state to maintain a standing army and to order it onto the field of battle. The issue is the degree of individual Christian involvement. “All violence is caused by sin, but not all violence is necessarily sinful—it may even be the occasion of virtue when it calls for courage and self-sacrifice.”43 In short, the need is for men who will stand for God and for His Word in the world—including in the military among soldiers who need the gospel.
The Christian’s Conscience Certain principles of Christian action apply even to considering participation in the military. Each believer is accountable to God (cf. Acts 5:29). No believer can leave this decision to someone else. Each Christian has liberty to determine the will of God for his or her life (cf. Romans 14). Part of that determination must take into account the dual citizenship of the Christian as being in the world while not being of the world (cf. John 15:19; 17:11).44
Consider the matter of prayer. Do Christians pray that the Lord Jesus will return soon? In point of fact, we are praying that
the whole pitiless machinery of war may go forward to bring, if possible, a speedy conclusion. It is mangled bodies, tortured minds, orphaned children that we are concerned with. There will be unstable children growing up to be parents of unstable homes, till the third and fourth generation, as a result of our war.45
Do Christians pray for the deliverance of Christians from persecution in places like China, the Sudan, and Pakistan? Do Christians pray for the release of the missionaries held hostage in Colombia? What will be the outcome if those prayers are answered by God? Christ eventually will come to judge those who have rejected Him and the gospel concerning Him. God may choose, in the meantime, to utilize war in China, the Sudan, or Pakistan to accomplish the deliverance of His people from persecution. The answer to these prayers may be war. Do believers know what they are praying? Any who have prayed these prayers cannot claim to have hands free of blood just because they have refused to be a soldier in their nation’s military.
Christians should not too hastily claim the role of “peacemaker” (Matt 5:9). Such a role is not necessarily antagonistic to the role of a warrior. Christ’s employment of the Greek term (,ÆD0<@B@4`H, eir‘nopoios) is the only Scriptural occurrence. Outside Scripture it is found only as a description of Caesar who wielded the sword of military might to produce the pax Romana. 46 A true peacemaker will not make peace at any price nor will he or she shun the employment of legitimate force to produce that peace.
Conclusion The issue is not one that can be decided quickly nor easily. No believer dare take the matter lightly. It is a difficult matter that involves the conscience of believers and perhaps even their Christian liberty. Note John the Baptizer’s response to the soldiers who inquired what they should do as works that would appropriately result from repentance:
And some soldiers were questioning him, saying, “And what about us, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.” 47
They were not told to resign from their vocation as soldiers, but to be content in that position with the wages it paid. Their behavior was to be just and honest—even while remaining soldiers. They were not instructed to resign, the life of a soldier not being viewed as inimical to true repentance. Ultimately, however, John’s instruction must be recognized as a pre-Christian declaration. Also, it was directed at those already in the military, not to those who might consider joining. These tensions have been recognized since the earliest centuries of the Christian church.48 The passage is offered here as a catalyst for further study. Has its teaching been revoked or revised by Christ or the apostles? What are its logical and theological implications in the context of all the rest of Scripture’s teachings on this subject?
The issue of war might be ignored for a time, but every individual must, at some time, come to grips with it personally. Peter Craigie described his encounter with the issue in the following way:
When I was a theological student, I worried about the “holy war” problem in the OT and sought the advice of a professor for further reading. He recommended one or two commentaries and von Rad’s Der heilige Krieg im alten Israel (“The Holy War in Ancient Israel”). I went off to study and found a mass of material of linguistic, historical, and cultural interest. But I found nothing which spoke to my problem, the theological anxiety I had about the identification of God with war. One cannot generalize from a single experience, yet I have met a large number of clergy since that time who experienced the same problem in their theological training.49
It is up to each believer to go to the Word of God in order to study this issue for himself/herself. Each believer’s good conscience is at stake in the decision. It is the opinion of this writer that the just war viewpoint offers the greatest consistency with the overall view of both the OT and the NT. Such a viewpoint ought not to be imposed on any individual believer, however. Perhaps the Scripture’s silence about any resignation from military service by converted soldiers on active duty is but an indication that the matter falls in the realm of freedom of conscience rather than the realm of absolute morality. That is the best answer to the question, “Should a Christian be a member of the military?”

In regard to the example of Abraham in Genesis 14, Lot and his family w ere not descendants of Abraham, therefore the action cannot be legitimized by appealing to the Abrahamic Covenant. Likewise, for those who would point to the uniqueness of Israel’s situation in the OT with regard to war, Genesis 14 was prior to Israel’s existence.

7 Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general, was reminiscing with Gen. John Hunt Morgan about their exploits in Tennessee and Kentucky in the summer of 1862. Morgan wanted to know how Forrest had captured the garrison and stores at Murfreesboro in spite of federal forces filling the surrounding countryside. Forrest replied, “I just took the short cut and got there first with the most men.” His answer has been enshrined as “I got there fustest with the mostest.” Cf. Clifton Fadiman, ed., The Little, Brown Book of Anecdotes (Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1985 ) 214. Forrest’s statement aptly describes the nature of military engagement and the concept of preemptive strike.

11 Ibid. Schaeffer uses the illustration of the obligation of Christian love to stop (by any means necessary) a big man from beating a tiny tot to death, if one were to come upon such atrocious conduct (23-24 ).
12 Matt 5:39 is best interpreted as a reference to personal interaction with other individuals in daily conduct, not interaction between armies or governments in a time of war.

Should the story of the woman caught in adultery be removed from the Bible? Um, NO, and here is why:
Tumblr media
The story of the woman caught in adultery is one of the most powerful historical events to be found in the Gospels. It speaks to the heart of God’s love and mercy, a love that we are to share in our hearts, a love we are to share with the world. It is also a foreshadowing of the gift of grace and salvation to come, a gift won by the physical death and resurrection of Christ, a gift that can bring about our own spiritual resurrection. Who cannot feel compassion as this woman is dragged before the public, an invisible scarlet letter emblazoned on her chest as the religious leaders speak out loud about her sin? Who cannot feel her broken spirit as they mention the Old Testament laws about how those guilty of adultery were to be stoned? And who cannot feel her shock and relief when Jesus states ““Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7). Who cannot imagine her exhilaration when Jesus said that he did not condemn her? What a beautiful story of Christ! It is almost impossible to imagine the Gospel of John without it.
And yet, there are many Christians who want it removed from the Gospel of John! I repeat: there are many Christians who want it removed from John’s Gospel! Now why, pray tell, do they want it taken out of the Bible? The following note in the ESV bible offers a clue:
“The earliest manuscripts do not include John 7:53-8:11.” That’s right. The Oldest copies of the Gospel of John that we have do NOT have the story of the woman caught in adultery, which is also called the Pericope Adulterae. Indeed, the earliest copy we have of the Gospel of John that has the story dates from the 5th century AD (though this doesn’t mean that there weren’t earlier copies of John with the passage in it. Not all manuscripts from the ancient world have survived to the modern era. Thus, some may very well have had it. Indeed, there is evidence for this; the Pericope Adulterae made its way into Jerome’s Latin Vulgate Translation in 383 AD, in the 4rth century AD (the year he finished translating the gospels. The Old Testament was translated into Latin from Hebrew by 405). This seems to have been a story that was circulated for a time and then later added to John. Indeed, it is believed by many to have been part of the early Christian oral tradition, just as the rest of the Gospels were before they were put into print. Though many scholars accept that it tells a historical event, its placement in scripture has been a point of debate. Indeed, there was some debate in the ancient world about it as well (more on that later).
So…the Apostle John didn’t write it, its not in the earliest manuscripts of John (i.e. that we have), and therefore, according to many Christian scholars, it should not be considered scripture. Seems like a pretty strong case, doesn’t it? It would be, if it wasn’t for the fact that its based on both the special pleading fallacy (aka double standard)  and a refusal to accept the early church father’s testimony about it.
Tumblr media
Let’s deal with the latter issue first.
Didymus the Blind, a Christian theologian who lived in the 4rth century, wrote that the story was found in “certain gospels”. It was presented as a historical event in the third century Christian document the Didascalia Apostolorum. Jerome, who translated the bible into Latin (the “Latin Vulgate”) put the story in his translation, even though he acknowledged that it wasn’t found in some versions of John. However, he stated that it was found in many Greek and Latin manuscripts of his day. Augustine was a big supporter of the passage. Indeed, he mentions something quite sinister about Christian leaders who opposed the story in his lifetime: “…certain persons of little faith, or rather enemies of the true faith, fearing I suppose, lest their wives should be given impunity in sinning, removed from their manuscripts the Lord’s act of forgiveness toward the adulteress, as if He who had said, 'sin no more' had granted permission to sin.”
Augustine, De Adulterinis Conjugiis, 2:6–7. Thus, people were removing it from the scriptures.
Tumblr media
Is it any wonder, then, that none of the early copies (before the 5th century AD) of John that survived to the modern era don’t have it? Some must have, in order for Jerome to have put it into his translation (remember, he also said there were many Greek copies in his time that contained it).
Now, some have discarded Augustine’s testimony, saying that he also defended the Old Testament Apocrypha (1rst and 2nd Maccabees, Judith, Tobit, Ecclesiasticus, etc.), which are found in the Catholic Bible but not in the protestant bible (save for some King James Bibles). This is a genetic fallacy, a logical fallacy where someone disregards an argument based on its origin instead of on the merit of the argument itself. Yes, Augustine did have some bad theological views, but so did Martin Luther, who started the Protestant Reformation (Luther wrote an anti-Semitic theological book titled “On the Jews and Their Lies”. I guess we should all be Catholic now…). Plus, the fact of the matter is that Augustine actually didn’t consider the apocrypha on par with scripture.
“So what?” the enemies of the Pericope Adulterae will say, “Its still not in the early manuscripts of John! John didn’t write it, therefore it’s not scripture!” Really? Really want to go down that road? Well, then you might as well cut out sections from the Pentateuch as well…
Tumblr media
For many ages, Moses was considered the sole author of the Pentateuch aka Torah. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy were thought to have been entirely pinned by Moses. Then skepticism reared its ugly head, and many scholars rejected the idea of Mosaic authorship, pointing out passages that proved problematic to it (more on them later), as well as repetitions that differed in details and different names of God being used in certain parts of the books (including some areas where Yahweh was used in stories that take place before Moses. The name of Yahweh wasn't revealed to humans until God spoke it to Moses, according to Exodus 6:2-3). This led to the Documentary Hypothesis, the idea that the Torah was written in stages over many centuries, with no parts written by Moses. Eventually, these documents were put together as the Torah.
Interesting idea, but even it has recently come under scrutiny, primarily due to the fact that ancient near eastern literature was known for odd repetitions that at times differed on details (see Paul’s conversion tales in Acts 9, 22 and 26). Individual storytellers and writers in the ancient near east did this, and Moses would have been expected to do the same. Other aspects of the Documentary hypothesis, including the use of different names for God in some passages, likewise fails under closer scrutiny (The passage in Exodus 6:2-3 can be translated to mean that “Yahweh”, as a name for God, was known of long before Moses was born).
Personally, I’ve never accepted the documentary hypothesis, in part due to the fact that there are multiple verses that indicate that Moses wrote a significant amount of the Torah (Ex 17:14, 24:4-8, 34:27, Num 33:2, Dt 31:9, 19, 22, 24). Combined with the fact that most of the material from Exodus to Deuteronomy deals with Moses’ life, as well as the answers to objections about repetitions, differing details and the use of different names of God noted above, one can conclude that a good case can be made for Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch or Torah.
But did he write the entire Torah? Um…Nope.
Tumblr media
Genesis 12:6 is our first clue:
“Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.” At that time…the Canaanites were in the land. Now, if Moses wrote this, then there is a BIG problem.
Tumblr media
You see…the Canaanites were STILL in the land while Moses was alive! The Israelites hadn’t even invaded the land yet (Dt 26:1)! That didn’t happen until after Moses died, when Joshua led the invasion (se Joshua chapters 1-3). Indeed, if you read the book of Joshua closely, chapters 13-18 show that, despite the hyperbolic statement of Joshua 11:23…the land had not been fully conquered. After Joshua died, there were still Canaanites in the land (as shown in Judges chapters 1-2). Indeed, they were still in the land during the time of Ezra, when the Israelites returned to Israel during the time of the Persian Empire (Ezra 9:1)! This happened during the reign of Cyrus the Great of Persia, who conquered Babylon in 539 BC and then gave the Jews permission to go back home.
Cyrus died in 530 BC.
Moses lived about 1400 BC.
Tumblr media
Next, let’s look at the Edomite Kings list in Genesis 36:31-39:
“ These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites.  Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, the name of his city being Dinhabah. Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, the name of his city being Avith. Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.  Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates reigned in his place.  Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place.  Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place, the name of his city being Pau; his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.”
Now, did you catch that first verse? Let’s look at it again:
“These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites.” (emphasis mine) Moses didn’t write that. How do I know?
Tumblr media
Because King Saul, the 1rst King of Israel, didn’t live until centuries after Moses! Heck, his reign marked the end of the Judges period!
Now, to be fair, Abimelech, son of the Israelite Judge Gideon, was made king of Shechem, and ruled Israel for 3 years (Judges 8:30-9:22).  However, his kingship wasn’t instituted by God (thus God didn’t recognize it, see Dt 17:14-17). He was an evil king, and during a battle a woman threw a millstone onto his head. Not wanting to die due to a woman, he had his armor bearer run him through with a sword. This was all due to the wrath of God (Judges 9:1-57). Oh, he also lived long after Moses and Joshua.
Tumblr media
Now, some may say that there may have been a king who reigned during Moses time, someone who wasn’t mentioned in the Bible. Well if that’s the case (no evidence for it whatsoever), then how do people who believe that explain Deuteronomy 17:14-17:
“When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, "Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us," be sure to appoint over you a king the LORD your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite. The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, "You are not to go back that way again." He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.”
Thus, many of the Edomite kings in the Genesis 36 kings list lived long after Moses.  Ergo, Moses didn’t write Genesis 36:31.
It’s also safe to say that he didn’t write Deuteronomy 34, which records his death. No one writes their own obituary.
Tumblr media
Some try to say that Moses was writing about his upcoming death as a prophecy, but if he did…why did he describe it in the past tense? Indeed, the passage seems even less like a prophecy in verse 10: “And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,” Indeed, in Dt 33:1, right before he gives his final blessing on Israel, it states: “This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced on the Israelites before his death.”
Similar arguments have been made for Genesis 12:6 and 36:31. Some have tried to make the case that both are actually prophecies penned by Moses, the former referring to the eventual removal of the Canaanites, the latter to future Edomite kings and the future Israelite monarchy. However, just like the passages about Moses’ death, they are described in the past tense. There is a reason for that; Genesis is a history, not a prophetic book. True, it does record some prophecies (Genesis 3:15, 15:4-5, 13-16, etc), but Genesis 12:6, 36:31 and Deuteronomy 33:1 and 34:1-12 (Deuteronomy is also a history) are written in the past tense, meaning...that they already happened when these passages were written down. They are no different from the rest of the historical passages in the Torah. They are structured as history, not prophecy. To say otherwise  is to commit eisegesis, instead of considering the historical facts of the Bible.  Let’s face it: Moses didn’t write these particular passages. Indeed, there are no doubt other parts of the Torah that he also didn’t write. Though Moses wrote the Torah, people added to it over time. Indeed, some of these additions were put in centuries after Moses’s died.
Just like the story of the woman caught in adultery was put into the Gospel of John a few centuries after it was written…
This begs the question; why are the same people who want to cut out John 7:53-8:11 not raising a ruckus about these passages in the Torah that Moses didn’t write? Why the double standard??
Tumblr media
I could understand a little if they believed in the Documentary Hypothesis, but the Documentary Hypothesis doesn’t jive with the Biblical evidence for Mosaic authorship seen above. Whether one thinks that Moses wrote a little bit of the Torah, or most of it, there is no denying that some of the Torah was written much later. And yet, the scholars who dismiss John 7:53-8:11…don’t dismiss Genesis 12:6, 36:31, or Deuteronomy 34. I once had a short twitter debate with a Biblical scholar (whose name I won’t mention) over the Pericope Adulterae . When I brought the passages up in the Torah that Moses obviously didn’t write, then asked why he didn’t want them gone because they weren’t written by Moses, yet still wanted John 7:53-8:11 gone, because it wasn’t written by the Apostle John, he said “That’s not how textual criticism works.”
What a way to sugarcoat a Special Pleading Fallacy. Now, some will cry foul, saying that there was controversy over the passage even during the ancient world. Well...guess what? Come on, guess what?
Tumblr media
There was also controversy over Jude, James, Hebrews, the Book of Revelation, 2 Peter and 2 and 3rdd John! Indeed, in the third century, these (and several other NT works) were at times excluded from scripture! Though there was already recognition of some NT books being canon in the 1rst century (2 Peter 3:16) it wasn’t until 367 AD that the New Testament canon acquired its current form. Folks, Textual criticism is an interesting field of study. To see what was originally in a historical document and then dismissing what’s not can be comparable to a surgeon removing a tumor from a body. But we also have to remember that God is the ultimate author of the Bible, inspiring John, Moses and countless others to write these sacred treasures. The story of the woman caught in adultery is no different. To remove it from the Bible would be like a surgeon removing a healthy organ from a body. Like Jude and the book of Revelation, this passage passed the test of the ancient church and later the reformation (when the Old Testament Apocrypha was removed). It speaks to the character of Christ, whose life perfectly reflected the truth that God is love (1 John 4:8,16).

All the hcs for the good knife boy
1. How does your muse feel about seafood?
Not a fan of seafood, though he’s never tried much of it, to be fair.
2. What is their favorite piece of technology?
His new rad as fuck lightsaber.
3. When did they lose their virginity?
He hasn’t yet.
4. Was there anything their parents pushed them to do? (e.g. sports, theatre, band)
Nah, Castor’s dads were happy to let him do his own thing and pursue any interests he pleased. They did encourage him to learn to defend himself, as that’s just a useful skill, but otherwise he made his own decisions.
5. Describe your muse’s worst nightmare.
Finding out his fathers are dead, and then proceeding to lose everyone else he cares about, one after another.
6. What is a deal-breaker when it comes to dating someone?
Cheating on him, most likely. Castor’s always had trust issues, so breaking his trust like that would be unforgivable.
7. What was the most embarrassing moment in your muse’s life?
I believe I’ve told the story of his most embarrassing before, so I’ll give his second-most embarrassing. When he was about twelve, he and Polly were playing in one of the big trees near their home, and they decided to have a little competition to see who could reach the top fastest. Castor had the upper hand the whole time, being such an athletic kid, and it looked like he was going to win— until he slipped off a branch. His jacket got caught on the way down, which saved him from falling, but also meant he was stuck dangling halfway up the tree while Polly ran to get help from their parents. Xavier laughed the entire time he was getting Castor down.
8. What keeps your muse up at night?
What ifs. What if he never finds his dads? What if he does find them, and they’re already dead? What if Percy never forgives him? What if Percy does forgive him? What if someone else he loves gets hurt?
9. What chronic illnesses does your muse have, if any?
If chronic mental illnesses count, then depression and some mild ptsd.
10. Does your muse get carsick?
Nah he’s good, doesn’t really get motion sickness.
11. Does your muse wear glasses/contacts?
His kind adopted sister Val had to buy him glasses because everyone realized he was blind as fuck except for him.
12. What are some warning signs that your muse is getting depressed?
The walls go way, way up when he’s upset. He’ll shut down and refuse to talk to anyone, and he’s much more likely to snap at someone if they try. It’s also very likely that he’ll have a bottle of some sort of alcohol in his hand.
13. What is your muse’s favorite candy?
He’s never really had much access to candy until recently, but he’s discovered he’s a fan of Snickers.
14. Does your muse have a “victory song” and if so, what is it?
Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. He loves those old Earth jams.
15. Who do they tend to bicker with the most?
Icio, no contest. He does care about them, though, underneath all the prickles.
16. Has your muse ever been hospitalized or institutionalized?
A few times, yeah. You don’t grow up the way Castor did without breaking a few bones.
17. Does your muse pray, whether it be to a god or some other force?
Nope, not at all. He doesn’t put any stock in matters of faith.
18. Has your muse ever lived in poverty?
Pretty much his whole life has been in poverty.
19. Do they have any distinct voice mannerisms? (e.g. saying ‘like’ or ‘um’ a lot, stutters)
If cursing an absurd amount counts, then he does that. He also tends to stutter when he’s under pressure or doesn’t know how to word something.
20. Where are your muse’s ancestors from? Do they keep any of their traditions?
Castor doesn’t actually know anything about his ancestors by blood. The only family line he’s aware of comes from his dads, and even then he never got to meet his grandparents on either side. They were nice people, from what he’s heard, though Xavier’s parents tended to be a little rowdy.
21. When did your muse learn about sex?
He’s known about it from the time he was about eight or nine. His dads never shied away from teaching him that kind of stuff, though they didn’t get into detail about any of it until he hit puberty.
22. What is your muse most thankful for?
He’s never said it, but he’ll be forever thankful for Luna picking him up with Icio and Ciri. He’s been given a huge family he never knew he could have, and he needs their support more than he could ever put into words.
23. What shoe size is your muse?
Eight. He’s got feet on the smaller side.
24. Does your muse hate their middle name? \ What is it?
His middle name is Sirius, and he’s rather indifferent to it. Never really comes up.
25. How many hours a day do they spend on the internet/watching TV?
He never really had anything close to the internet or TV growing up, but TV wouldn’t really interest him regardless. He’d probably spend a good chunk of time on the internet, but he prefers actually being out doing things.
26. Does your muse have any trophies?
Not really. He might have to start taking some war trophies from people he defeats though.
27. If your muse was given the opportunity to go sky diving, would they?
Absolutely. Castor’s an adrenaline junkie through and through.
28. What is the most common lie your muse tells themselves?
“Don’t let them in. You’re safer if you keep them at bay. Don’t let them in.”
29. Has your muse ever had a pet? If so, what type?
He’s never really had a pet of his own, but there was a stray dog that he and Polly sort of adopted. It tended to hang around their house, and they played with it and kept it fed when they could.
30. Who was your muse’s first kiss?
Percy, though Castor doesn’t remember it.
31. What is your muse’s first memory?
He has a very distinct memory of a particularly bad thunderstorm from when he was about three. The thunder was so loud it rattled the walls of his house, and as a frightened small child, he was convinced lightning would strike them at any moment. Thankfully his dads were both there to comfort him, and they distracted him with warm food and cuddles under blankets and fun stories. It helped at the time, but he’s been afraid of thunderstorms ever since, and only his dads have ever really been able to comfort him during one.
32. How does your muse feel about crocs?
If he saw them, he would instantly hate them.
33. What are your muse’s biggest pet peeves?
People who eat with their mouth open/smack their lips when they chew, people who’re too nosy, being called short.
34. What was your muse’s happiest birthday?
He doesn’t really have one birthday that stands out for him anymore. They’ve all blended together into “birthdays before” and “birthdays after” his dads were gone. The ones before were all his happiest. The ones after have just reminded him of what he’s lost.
35. Does your muse cross their legs/ankles when they sit?
If he’s sitting with his legs stretched out, he’ll cross his ankles. Otherwise, he sits too weird in chairs to be able to cross anything.
36. What simple task is your muse surprisingly bad at?
Cooking. You’d think after living on his own for a few years, he’d at least learn the basics, but he’s still pretty awful at it.
37. Did your muse ever own a Tamagatchi?
He has no idea what that is, so sadly no.
38. What was your muses’s first job?
Bounty hunting was the first “job” he ever took, though he’s never had what most would probably consider an actual job.
39. Does your muse usually go for truth or dare?
He’s a dare taking kind of boy, especially since he doesn’t like sharing secrets about himself. But he’ll take truth every now and again.
40. Has your muse ever been to a concert?
Never. Concerts weren’t really a big thing on Earth.
41. What is your muse’s favorite holiday?
Candlenights, by far.
42. Does your muse reply to scary chain emails/messages?
He doesn’t have any means of receiving scary emails or messages, but honestly, he’d probably be the idiot to keep sending them along. He’s a conspiracy theorist and fully believes in shit like ghosts, so he wouldn’t want to believe chain mail, but he’d always listen to it anyway just in case.
43. Describe the first person your muse remembers losing.
His dads. They were his entire world, his best friends apart from Polly. He went to them whenever he needed comfort or reassurance or someone to laugh with. They taught him everything he knows, and they gave him a childhood he’ll always cherish, even though the world they lived in wasn’t the kindest. He misses them more than life itself.
44. Would your muse ever roleplay?
He doesn’t really have the confidence for something like that.
45. What is your muse’s Hogwarts house?
Slytherin.
46. What is your muse’s first thought upon waking up?
“Why the fuck am I awake.”
47. Name a song your muse can sing every word to.
Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance.
48. Who would your muse sacrifice themselves for, if anybody?
Everyone on the Freedom Vessel except Adrian, his dads, and Polly. Percy is the highest priority on the Freedom Vessel, though.
49. How long is your muse’s penis? || What bra size is your muse?
It’s… average? He would probably say it was on the bigger side but it’s average.
50. If your muse could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?
Genesis.

Prompt 23 & 36, please.
Hi anon! thank you for requesting! I chose Liam x MC, I hope this is fine with you 😘 Thank youFavorite momentsSummery: Liam’s favorite moments are always the moments he and Mc have to themselves, when the eyes of the court and the press doesn’t prick into them. When his brother, Leo, drops off their niece without prior notice, they share another one of those moments.*Written from Liam’s POV*Author’s note:  This was so fun, since I had the creative freedom to choose which pairing I’d like to use those prompts on. Thank you!I loved the possibility to do a (kindof) crossover from my fav couples from roe and trr :D I hope you’ll like that!@thatocladyplayschoices I hope you’ll like this too, this is a light & fluffy piece ^^ Pairings: Liam x Mc, Leo x Kelly (ROE’s mc)-Liam and Mc were still getting used to being a married couple. They were married for six months now, and while MC wasn’t raised at court, or prepared for that her entire life, as some people have, she’d been a natural. Even Bertrand said that, during their wedding, when giving them his regards in person. “She was a delight to sponsor” “Maxwell did an outstanding job” and “She brought hope for the entire court” were just few of the things he’d let slip when talking to them, but Mc wore a proud, slightly teary-eyed smile and pulled him into a hug afterwards.“This, for an example, wasn’t queenly-appropriate behavior” He had to remain his judging, grumpy self, but the smile on his face and the hand around her back - returning her gesture - told them otherwise. She was still her stubborn, cheery, and righteous self, but she’s also been a wonderful queen. All those traits only made her a better, more generous ruler, alongside with Liam.Liam loved it when Mc eyes sparkled after every time they’d pass a law that helped those in need. And they’ve faced harder decisions, together, too. No matter what they’ve had to face, they always pulled through. While the photos scandal shook them at their core and almost broke them apart, it also taught them a lesson. If they managed to overcome that obstacle, they could do anything, as long as they’re together.“Your love makes me stronger.” Liam had told Mc. And each time they’ve faced a new hard decision, she’d squeeze his hand, reminding him and reassuring him they could do it.They both had busy schedules, and were pre-occupied with many things, each had his duties to attend to, and so Mc suggested they’d make a promise; every other weekend was a date night, and they’d have an entire day to themselves. They made it as much as it was possible. Those were still his favorite moments together, when the eyes of the noble families and the press weren’t all directed at them.Liam finished off a busy day at the office, after countless meetings and political discussions, and headed for their bed chambers. He knew it was supposed to be date night, and the exhaustion vanished off him right over, filling him with excitement instead. It was only when he reached their room, only to find it – unfortunately – empty, that he had thought to check his cell phone for any text messages or notifications. There was, one unexpected text message waiting for him there.Sorry, bro. She’ll be in the garden ;) – Leo.That was strange, Liam thought to himself, while changing from his royal attire to something more comfortable, while still keeping it appropriate for outside of the bedroom. He got out into the palace’s garden, searching for Mc and scanning the garden. He finally found her, and started making his way towards her, while Mc didn’t notice his presence. She was too busy playing along with the 4 year-old angel who happened to be their favorite (and only) niece. The sun was starting to set, coloring the sky in a pinkish color, and it made both of them glow in the dim light, making the scene unfolding in front of him to even more lovely.Mc was wearing a simply white sundress, and her hair was tied up in a slightly messy bun, it was obvious a certain 4 year old was tempering with it earlier today, but she still looked just as beautiful as ever. This seemed like it would join the list of his favorite moment, too.“So this is where my two favorite girls have disappeared to.” Liam amusingly commented when he reached them, making Mc jump in her place, and wrap him in her embrace, and the little girl giggle. “Liammm!” their niece jumped up as well, and hugged his leg. Mc broke their hug apart long enough to let her pick her up, and then returned and hugged Roselyn from the other side, planting a big kiss on her cheek. She was named after her grandmother, from her mother’s side.“So, is little Rosie ready to go to bed yet?” Liam wasn’t even bothered his brother leaving them on babysitter duty, not ever. “Nuh-uh!” She protested. “Mc promised I could play a little longer today!” She used those puppy-eyes of hers, and Liam was sold. “I did promise that,” Mc confessed, popping her head behind Rosie, and both of them looked at him with those big, hopeful eyes.“Okay, okay, you know I can’t say no to that face. That’s unfair!” He joked, putting Rosie down. The little girl didn’t waver, running back to her toys and continuing what seemed to be a fight between a knight and a dragon. Liam chuckled at the sight, and felt Mc leaning against him. He instinctively wrapped a hand over her waist, holding her close.“Leo and Kelly dropped her off today afternoon. I finished off early and thought I’d rather spend time with her instead of a assigning her a nanny, though they’re great and she loves them too. She especially loves Bastien, even though he insist he’s not her nanny. They said they had some urgent business, and were in the neighborhood, they should be back tomorrow.” Mc updated him. Liam chuckled when Bastien was mentioned, memories of the last visit of Leo, his wife and Rosie, when Rosie decided to ride his back, and his ‘upset’ reaction, even though everybody knew he loved it.“I also wanted to send you a message, but I knew you were in the middle of meeting, and afterwards I must’ve trailed off.” She blushed.“It’s okay, Leo told me to go looking for you in the garden.” Liam kissed her cheek, thinking that Mc would make a great mother. She absolutely adored Rosie, but then again, Mc always loved kids. Liam got a wave of excitement wash over him, when the thought of having their own kids came to his mind. He couldn’t hind his smile, and Mc sent him a questioning look, still wearing a smile. He sat on the porch, watching Rosie continue her play, and motioned Mc to sit beside him. She sat and instantly lean into his touch, and he hummed happily.“I was just thinking how good you are with Rosie.” Liam started, placing a hand over Mc cheek, and stroking it lightly.“Well, you’re not so bad yourself,” She returned at him, with a satisfied tone.He was glad she thought that, she always seemed to know how to get Rosie’s attention better than him.“And I’ve just thought… about having our own kids one day.” Liam admitted, looking into her eyes. There was some kind of blissfulness in her eyes and the way her lips curled up into a wide smile, with something additional hiding behind it.“Just one day?” Before Liam could ask why she looked at him like that, she replied.“W-What…” He stuttered for a moment, trying to understand what she was meaning.“The reason I finished early today was that I needed to take a test.” She explained. “One day might be closer than you’d think.” She added. Liam’s eyes shot wide open in surprise. “Are you saying?-“ He caressed her face with both hands, waiting for her to say it out loud.“I’m pregnant.” She confirmed it, smiling excitedly at him.Liam almost felt tears of joy forming in his eyes, when he pulled her into a long, passionate kiss.“Ewww!” They pulled apart when they heard Rosie commenting, and burst into laughter with her.“I’m so happy.” He told her, when they both caught their breath.“Me too.” She said, stroking his cheek. He pulled her into a hug, holding her tightly against him. “You have no idea how happy you make me. With you, I always feel like the luckiest man in the world.” He whispered into her ear.It was getting late, Liam helped Rosie gather her toys, and Mc lifted the yawning, sleepy-headed girl in her arms. They accompanied her to her room, which was right next to theirs. A nanny already prepared it earlier today, so they only had to tuck her in.“Did the knight beat the dragon?” Liam questioned Rosie before she made it to her bed.“Nope. But don’t worry, the princess was there and she saved the day!” She excitedly told him about the princess defending the knight, and how it all ended with them being friends. Liam nodded at the delightful story, and Mc stood proudly beside.Rosie fell asleep immediately when she lied on her pillow, and they slipped out of her room before she’d notice. They entered their room afterwards. The moment they closed the door behind them, Liam’s lips were on Mc’s, and his hands were on her waist, holding her close.“Liam,” She breathed out. “I love you so much.” She pulled at his shirt, until he helped her and pulled it off. “Me too.” He rested his forehead against hers. Afterwards, they changed into their sleepwear, and fell asleep curled into each other. Liam drifted away into a blissful sleep, with Mc’s in his arms. This was defiantly getting in his list of favorite moment. Actually, it just shot up to the head of the list.

Rules: Answer these 92 statements and tag 20 people. I was tagged by @dyannehs
LAST:
1. Drink: Water 2. Phone call: Myself. Because I lost my cell phone. Outside of that, my mom! 3. Text message: One of my awesomeful friends of awesomeness who I’ve nicknamed Hux (she’s the Hux to my Kylo!) 4. Song you listen to: A nerdy composition project I’m working on. *grins* It’s a secret ’cause I’m gonna share online when I’m done! 5. Time you cried: Actual-actual cry? Don’t remember. Tears in the eyes? Maybe like two days ago? Yay for being broke.
HAVE YOU:
6. Dated someone twice: Yes, I have dated the same person twice, and both experiences were quite wonderful indeed! And I’d probably date her a third time if life came around to it - both times we broke up came from us being too timid to do basic communication about relationship goals. We’re still really good friends rn - honestly either as friends or as dates, I’m happy either way! 7. Kissed someone and regretted it: Yes 8. Been cheated on: Not in the sex way, but my first relationship ended because my current gf was hitting blatantly on someone in front of my face, and while we were talking about maybe doing a poly thing, this hitting-on-someone-else was in the venue of putting aside and ignoring me, and that wasn’t okay.  9. Lost someone special: Yes. 10. Been depressed: Oh shit I forgot my depression meds again... *runs to take them* Umm. Yes. The answer’s yes. High-functioning depression, here I am, prime example. Yayyyy [sarcasm] 11. Gotten drunk and thrown up: I don’t drink alcohol so nope.
LIST 3 FAVORITE COLORS:
12. Silver 13. Chocolate brown 14. Black
IN THE LAST YEAR HAVE YOU:
15. Made new friends: Aye! 16. Fallen out of love: Not really? I mean I don’t know how to explain it. 17. Laughed until you cried: Thanks to Lance and Kaltenecker, yes. 18. Found out someone was talking about you: I guess my coworkers thought I was quitting instead of just reducing my hours, so I had to fix that rumor chain straight. 20. Found out who your friends are: I think that’s always an ongoing thing in life. This year, I’d say that I’ve had reaffirmations that the people I care about care about me, so that’s really awesome. It’s wonderful to know that people are thinking of me. And I’m thinking of you, friends! 21. Kissed someone on your Facebook list: Yep!
GENERAL:
22. How many of your Facebook friends do you know in real life: About 99% of them. It’s very rare for me to add an internet friend to my FB contacts. 23. Do you have any pets: No. My apartment only allows cats and dogs, and I want guinea pigs again. ;_; 24. Do you want to change your name: I’m proud of my name and have used it as a source of inspiration (it means “pure”). That said, in the last few years, I feel increasingly distanced from my name and honestly think of myself far more as being named “Haddock.” Haddock is my name, my birth name is second. Still a good name, but I’m a Haddock. 25. What did you do for your last birthday: On the day itself: relaxed, bought myself froyo, Skyped family, chilled, was awesome. The general-ish week of my birthday: had a dinner with family, stayed up and binged all of VLD S4 the night it came out, hung out with a friend and also binged VLD. Basically, a lot of VLD. 26. What time do you wake up: The number fluctuates quite wildly day-per-day because “sleep schedule” is a myth. Today, I got up at 11 AM. 27. What were you doing at midnight last night: Answering asks on tumblr and PMing/texting a few good friends. 28. Name something you can’t wait for: Having enough money to live comfortably and not stress every time rent week comes around. 29. When was the last time you saw your mom?: A few days ago, Friday. 30. What is one thing you wish you could change in your life: Oh where do I fucking start... Well. The biggest thing is I’d do is go back in time and prevent a terrifyingly bad argument/falling out with my ex/ex best friend that happened in 2011-2012, not because I want to still be friends with this person (I don’t anymore), but because the experience was very... traumatic... to both of us and I’d love us not to live with those mental scars. I’m still getting over those scars and it sucks. 31. What are you listening to right now: The composition I’m working on. 32. Have you ever talked to a person named Tom: Yeah. Don’t know anyone well named Tom, though. One of my coworkers is a Tommy if that counts? 33. Something that is getting on your nerves: There’s one wonderful friend of mine who’s going through a really challenging time. I want to help them so badly, but they’ve been closed off and hermitting themselves to the point I think it’s harmful for them, it’s hard to contact them to help them, and they live too far away for me to check on them in person easily. I want to do anything to see them in person to help, or to talk to them, or anything... sitting in silence makes me very worried because this wonderful human soul deserves all the love and support they can get for what they’re going through. 34. Most visited website: Tumblr, Facebook, Netflix, Google. 35. Mole/s: I have two bumps on my forehead, one to either side. I jokingly call them horns, but they’re not evenly lined up, and the one on my left is much larger than the one on my right. 36. Mark/s: Bellybutton scar from a second degree burning incident, lots of scars on my hands right now from falling on concrete two months back, lots of scars on my wrists from a whole bunch of whatnot (I even have one from my sophomore year of high school when a school binder scraped me?), oh. And I have basically leopard-speckled shoulders from countless acne/pimple scars. For unnatural marks... three tats! Plans to get at least two more. 37. Childhood dream: To be a published, bestselling author or a college prof. 38. Hair color: Currently dark brown with bleached bangs and a strip on the right side. Natural hair color is what I call “dusty brown” and some people would call dirty blonde; it’s in that random in-between blonde and brown where the top is blonde-ish and the bottom is rather brown. 39. Long or short hair: I have the conundrum of enjoying my hair either really long or really short. I’m in the process of regrowing it to the long stage. It’s sort of at the bottom-of-the-shoulder-blades/boob length now. Goal is to go back to waist length. 40. Do you have a crush on someone: Does Takashi Shirogane count? 41. What do you like about yourself: Honestly, quite a lot? XD I’m very thankful to be a nerd who is apt to learn anything from sciences to arts and music and sports. I’m thankful to be a musician, a composer, a creative writer, an animation junkie, an analytical and logical mind, a complete and utter NERD beyond belief who lives in nerd culture. I love my appearance, I love my facial hair, I love my eyebrows and face shape, I love my body shape, I love that I’m left-handed, I love that I’m not conventionally pretty. I love being a Christian. I love being aroace. I mean when I’m not in a depressive, self-deprecating mode, I really am proud and thankful to be who I am all across the board; there’s very little that I dislike about myself. Mostly what I dislike is my current life situation of not being anywhere career-wise. Everything else, pretty happy. :) 42. Piercings: Two on each earlobe and one halfway up the cartilage. Dammit and I wanted like a dozen piercings by this type in my life. Get me a more stable paycheck and we’re fixing this! 43. Blood type: O+. Most common blood type, woot? 44. Nicknames?: I’ve had a terrifying slew of nicknames over the years. Currently, the most common ones are Haddock, King, (Kylo) Ren, Spock, and Toast. 45. Relationship status: Single in my chill natural habitat. 46. Zodiac: I am so bitter about my Zodiac sign I refuse to say it even though it’s not too hard to figure out what it is given other answers to this meme. 47. Pronouns: He/his/him, though honestly I really don’t care too much what people toss at me. 48. Favorite TV Show: Voltron: Legendary Defender. 50. Right or left hand: LEFT-HANDED WOOOOOOOO LEFT LEFT LEFT LEFT LEFT LEFT LEFT LEFT LEFT LEFTY PRIDE YOOOO! 51. Surgery: When I was nine I had four baby teeth and then the four adult teeth under them removed. Basically, a wisdom tooth like surgery but younger and with different teeth. 52. Hair dyed in different color: FUCK YEAH! I was getting really bored of my natural hair color but was keeping it natural for the purpose of looking professional (job searches). I’d been wanting to reinstate some purple and black again, but with my current job only allowing “natural” hair colors, I decided I couldn’t go that route. Instead I bleached the front and dyed the rest dark brown in a sort of inspiration from Takashi Shirogane. 53. Sport: I played soccer all growing up, so much fun. Love jogging. Sports are great, miss having the opportunity to do team stuff. Also really enjoy watching professional gymnastics, soccer, American football, and especially tennis. 55. Vacation: I want to see so many locations oh my fuck. My “to go to” list includes Bhutan, Nepal, China/Tibet, Mongolia, Cambodia (again... come on I miss it!), Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Japan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom (England & Scotland), Norway, Canada, Peru, Mexico, South Korea, India, Myanmar, Austria, Germany, Iceland... um. Yeah. You. Get the picture. I NEED TO TRAVEL, YO! 56. Pair of trainers: Uh they’re like really raggedy and old and stuff
MORE GENERAL:
57. Eating: I’m snacking on M&Ms again, like always. 58. Drinking: Water, though methinks I shall make some homemade ginger tea. 59. I’m about to: Probably go shower. It’s 3 PM and I still am in my pajamas. 62. Want: To fucking write and do NaNo and yet life’s been busy and I haven’t had the time for a word but I HAVE SO MANY VLD FANFICS I WANT TO DO AND AURGHGHGHGHGHGH the goal is to somehow write and finish my universal translator mix-up one this month???? We’ll see! Translators, stay tuned, and thanks again for offering to help! 63. Get married: 97% of me doesn’t want to get married I think? 64. Career: Linguistics consultant of doom. Not sure if this can be a career but if I could, I would enjoy continuing the remote work. To explain: I currently work contract positions with various companies who hire me for short-term projects, in which I use my linguistics expertise to analyze and annotate large sums of data according to certain guidelines. 65. Hugs or kisses: Hugs. I. LOVE. HUGS. SO. MUCH. HUGGGGGMEEEEE! I always look closed off in my body language but I swear the inside of me is always going “Giff me the cuddles and don’t let go.” 66. Lips or eyes: Eyes. Eyes are the most gorgeous thing about humans seriously. 67. Shorter or taller: I prefer to be the short one in all social situations. 68. Older or younger: For friends, I’m chill with whatever age you are. Dating, also chill, though I think I tend to prefer being slightly older just ’cause that’s how most of my relationships have been? But really doesn’t matter. 70. Nice arms or nice stomach: Arms. Nice arms are unique for me. I’m pretty happy with lots of different stomach types I see - tummies just are cute! :) 71. Sensitive or loud: A combo is fun but what I look for most in any platonic or anything relationship is someone with a deep heart. I want friends with whom I can confide in anything... so has to be that sensitive side (sensitive-logical if that makes sense is what I like best). 72. Hook up or relationship: I’ve done random PG hookups? But my answer for this is relationship; hookups are only fun for short-term boosts of self-confidence and not being 100% genuine and just being like carefree “whatever” for a night (make sure you both know you’re just doing the hookup night though, please guys, no deception!). Long-term relationships though are glorious like none other for their emotional power. <3 That is pure beauty, caring for someone deeply with lasting loyalty. But of course ya’ll know me... I find nothing more beautiful to cherish than deep platonic care! 73. Troublemaker or hesitant: Combo of both!
HAVE YOU EVER:
74. Kissed a Stranger: Yeppers 75. Drank hard liquor: Nope 76. Lost glasses/contact lenses: Yes ugh I have no clue where one of my pairs of glasses are again 77. Turned someone down: Yes 78. Sex on the first date: I’ve had sex never so this is an easy answer 79. Broken someone’s heart: Yes 80. Had your heart broken: Yes 81. Been arrested: No 82. Cried when someone died: Yes 83. Fallen for a friend: Yes
DO YOU BELIEVE IN:
84: Yourself: Yes, typically 85. Miracles: Absolutely 86. Love at first sight: I mean I don’t deny it happens. It happens. But I don’t think it’s pragmatic to think that’s what’ll happen to you. 87. Santa Claus: Come on, of course North and the Guardians are kicking Pitch’s butt! 88. Kiss on the first date: Sure, why not
OTHER:
90. Current best friend name: I don’t have one best friend right now. A few of my current closest friends are named Josh, “Hux”, Keith, JuLee, Rachel, Peter, and Meredith. 91. Eye color: Brown 92. Favorite movie: HOW DO I PICK ONE FAVORITE MOVIE FUCK YOU?? The Prince of Egypt, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the How to Train Your Dragon movies, Pacific Rim, there, I made a list.
Uhhhhh let’s so who should I tag... if you want to do it... @akkeyroomi @the-mr-eggplant @chiefrosepetal @thefuriousnightfury @insaneskye @fanwriter02 @dragonpride99 @jettara @margarethelstone @shailyesshadow @hubwalker1 @godguy0001 @theravenfliesagain @frosty-viking @jackthevulture @hiccup-is-left-handed @dragonnan @spacekeet @nightfury326 yaknowwhat I am not going to count but we’ll say that’s about 20 XD

Damon, TAKE STEALTH LESSONS {2x04 Review}
1. I’m sorry, we really need to talk about how this twenty year old man is this jealous over his 17 year old brother, like get over yourself, Damon and grow up, be an older brother. Stefan is SEVENTEEN.
2. In this dream, Elena says that it’s Damon’s turn at the pool table but then Elena is the one who’s playing while Damon is like teaching her how to play even though Elena can play pool but I guess Katherine wouldn’t know about the last part.
3. Also I’m laughing because when would Damon and Elena actually do anything like play pool in their actual relationship.
4. Tyler is actually being quite calm considering he knows werewolves exist now.
5. Katherine actually annoyed me in this episode, mostly when she’s trying to be coy about werewolves, something about Nina’s enunciations and she exaggerates her features the way Ian does for Damon.
6. I still have no idea why all the vampires would look to Katherine.
7. Katherine, my girl, why would Stefan come back to MF to fall in love with you all over again when he thought you died? Girl, stop.
8. Stefan is also a lot better at emotional manipulation than Damon like Damon does it the most and he does it aggressively but Stefan is way more stealth when he does it.
9. I can appreciate that Stefan is given the chance to torture his abuser but I am hella annoyed that Caroline wasn’t afforded the same chance with Damon.
10. I find it ridiculous that Elena tells Jenna to be nice to Damon when Damon killed her brother and Jenna’s nephew and I also find it ridiculous that Jenna tells Elena she’ll be nice when Damon “keeps [his] paws off [her]” and doesn’t tell Damon to leave her underage niece alone. Like Jenna, he was flirting with you and Matt’s mother at the bar! And this whole dynamic makes me question why Elena didn’t question Stefan and Damon dating one woman before she knew they were vampires because Stefan and Damon dating one woman is like her and Jenna dating the same guy.
11. Now when I watch the scene of Mason and Damon introducing themselves I think of that blooper when Ian goes, “Oh hey I’m Ian”, completely ruined the scene because now I expect Ian to introduce himself as Ian.
12. Lol Caroline trying to break up Stefan and Elena on Katherine’s orders just makes me laugh now.
13. But she’s eating chips and now I want chips.
14. Katherine legitimately comes off as a delusional, crazy ex girlfriend. “Does she know that you love me?” but like pretty much any woman who falls for Stefan comes off that way and that includes Elena storming into Tessa’s cabin when she had no business there.
15. Also they need to establish time with vampires because I’m sitting here thinking like, for argument’s sake, let’s say Stefan did love you in 1864, Katherine, that doesn’t suggest that he would love you over 100 years later, 100 years is a long ass time and throughout those years you watched him and he wasn’t pining for you and he thought you DIED soooooooooooo, I need to know if 100 years is considered like a year for a vampire especially since in season 7 Caroline is freaking out over Stefan being away for 3 years and gets her ass engaged in that time so like RULES.
16. It also makes absolutely no sense to me that Katherine would be staying in a house full of men in 1864 Virginia and everyone is OK with it. Propriety was a thing.
17. Damon stays being trash. “Is my love not enough?” well I don’t know, Damon, who did she take to the ball? It wasn’t you. She didn’t even speak to you all night! WHAT DO YOU THINK.
18. “I never compelled your love” but here’s the thing besides the fact that Stefan was clearly just infatuated, it doesn’t matter because once you do start compelling him, it all goes out the window, it poisons and pollutes what was there before because then you make him your victim, you take away how he truly feels about something and continue a relationship with him then everything that comes from that can never be completely real particularly since she compelled Stefan to drink her blood, like she really fucked up his life though.
19. DAMON IS SO BAD AT BEING STEALTHY. Yes, let’s antagonize Mason openly with pictionary because that is SO smart. Damon is bad at stealth also because he has a false sense of power and intelligence but Caroline’s “Puppy! Puppy! Puppy with a tutu!” is hilarious.
20. “Aunt Jenna is getting tipsy.” “Will you stop plying her with alcohol?” “Well I want her to like me! Nice. Very nice. A tactic he also uses on Elena in 1x11. This is typical predatory behaviour.
21. Also Damon is just UP in Elena’s space and she’s actually constantly startled and uncomfortable, that isn’t sexual tension.
22. Elena, aren’t you at all conflicted by the fact that Damon plans on stabbing one of your friend’s uncle? Like that just doesn’t cross your mind?
23. “You were so scared of me I had to take away your fear” or you could’ve left him alone, Katherine.
24. OK so George Lockwood was a werewolf and Katherine knew he was a werewolf and he knew she was a vampire and he decided because she knew he was a werewolf to tell the council about the vampires living in the town but was willing to strike a deal with the one person who knew he was a werewolf? I guess...
25. Damon and Alaric are SO obvious, it really annoys me.
26. Lol, Elena is like ... Stefan didn’t pick up his phone or answered any of my messages or texts so obviously I am going to his house. Cute.
27. “And Damon being Damon nearly ruined everything” pretty much an exact description of Damon.
28. “Is that the only thing that makes me terrible?” Damon, you killed her nephew.
29. Elena was never really big on defending her relationships to other people but she was definitely more protective of her relationship with Stefan when Caroline attacks it this episode than she was of her relationship to Damon when Caroline attacks that. 4x08 doesn’t count because she was Sired.
30. Damon is fucking ridiculous, it isn’t a full moon, he tried to kill Mason by stabbing him and it didn’t work and he just stands there? You’re not going to try any other methods? No, you’ll wait to rip his heart out then taunt Katherine with it and get Jenna stabbed. Jackass.
31. I don’t go hard for Katherine as a lot of you may know but that line is still fucking great, “I will kill everyone she loves WHILE she watches and then I will kill her while YOU watch” like that’s fucked up.
32. Paul’s expression when Katherine breaks free of the chains is actually kind of amazing and the way he’s like “why, why” like he’s just SO confused. “I told you! I missed you Stefan!” legit crazy ex-girlfriend.
33. Seriously love how Stefan and Elena like have to hug right after they experience something traumatic.
34. I’m sorry but Katherine just isn’t threatening. At last when Isobel came into town, to prove her point she had Matt’s arm nearly crushed.
35. Why is Tyler only obsessed with how the curse is triggered and not the fact that his uncle actually turns into a wolf? And like what’s it like to be a wolf and how long he was a wolf and why they call it a CURSE?
36. YO. I was so scared when this episode aired and the break up scene happened, I was like OMG NOOOOOOO.
37. And then he was in her room and they were all fucking cute and I was like OK YOU SCARED ME.
38. That moan when they kiss tho.
39. I remember my best friend and I watching this in our uni library and when Katherine kisses Dead Stefan’s lips she turned to me and was like SEE? SHE CARES! She was so excited and I was like ... she’s trying to get in between SE right now so idgaf. And she rolled her eyes. I remember that SO clearly.
40. It is a sweet scene with nice music tho.
Thanks for reading!
