tried experimenting with colors a while ago
(man tumblr keeps eating the image quality-)
[IMAGE ID: A digital illustration of a person sitting in a bus. The entire drawing is made with various warm tones of orange, brown, yellow and lime. The bus appears to be driving by a park, and a streetlamp, some trees and a couple of people are seen outside the windows. The drawing is made in a sketchy sort of style, and the colors has a vague crayon texture to them.]

Okay so last night I was having an "art style panic"? I guess you could call it that? But I was feeling really bad, so i started drawing other peoples art styles and picking points and peaces out of it!
I did this last night when I was really tired and i used a pen so the drawings may not be how i usually do my drawings haha
Tumblr media
Ok so first up we have @emjoyzhos-ej !! I recently just found your account but you have a very cool style!!
•Your skull shape is very unique, very rectangle
•your lines are very sketchy (most people I follow have this trait in their art..)
•when you color it looks like you mayy have rook inspiration from itsxroxannex? Idk i wrote that down, maybe it's not true but I guess i thought that last night
But I love your style! Your art is so cool and I had fun trying to replicate it!
Tumblr media
Next we have @milkybnnuy ! Omg so I really like you!! Your art is sooo good
•You draw a lot of fell, so i made the drawing of killer like how you made that one fell killer drawing
•when you color you have a very paintly-style and that's cool!!
•your skull shape reminds me of an egg (i guess thats why i said "egg head" last night)
Up in the top I wrote "I did not replicate your art properly enough," and that's true! Your art is so unique and different from what i usually drew so i had a hard time replicating it! But nonetheless, i had a fun time trying and hope you ain't disappointed lol
Btw- I really like the way you draw your fuzz on hoods!! So satisfying to look at!
Tumblr media
And now we go onto @voidzphere !
I've followed you for a while, and you're cool to be around and I like when you post! Though i had a hard time finding the art hidden around, I still was able to replicate it (luckily i chose to draw killer for this haha)
•so I see that you usually draw/post doodles, unless i just didn't scroll down far enough haha (plz tell me if you have drawn something big i wanna see)
•I noticed you have more pointy and thicker lines
•you have a certain way you draw your Skulls, I can't really put a shape or object here to describe it
Even though I couldn't find more drawings, I still tried! I hope you like it, friend, cause u cool
Tumblr media
Here is @cherrio-krispz ! I just started following you last night, like seriously I had to search you up just now to figure out who you were cuz I forgot, but when i saw your art I immediately recognized you
•you have a very recognizable style!
•again, i did not replicate well.
•very painty-like when color
•sketchy lines, seems like you don't do line art?
•I like ur skulls, they look like skulls
Tumblr media
OMG I'VE BEEN WAITING TO TALK ABOUT YOU. YOU. YOUUU. @somegrumpynerd OMG YOUUUUUU. I REALLY LIKE YOUR ARTTT.
•I LIKE IT
•very cartoonish
• noticable art style
•thick lineart
I LOVE seeing posts when they come out!!! They're really really cool and make me feel so happy when I see them! Keep going because you're so cool!
Tumblr media
@spookeri haiiii
You're here tooo
i like ur art :)))))) a LOT . Same as the last guy, I get very excited when you post. Your DTIYS were fun, and yeye... Yeah
•Very flat colors
•flat lines
•cool looking skulls
•you have an "air-brush" shading style (i guess you could call it), which isn't a bad thing! Do what you want to do! But maybe try out cell-shading? Idk you don't have to, but idk i feel like cell-shading fits your art style
Also if you look in the bottom you can see a scratched out drawing, that was my first attempt haha
You can see it in the drawing below
Tumblr media
@wyllaztopia !! I like your art :)) you have a very noticeable style and when you post I get excited as well!
•clean lines
•you make skulls longer than how other people make their skulls in this last
•I liked replicating it
Idk what else to say ... Its just all really cool!!
And last but not the worst
My art style!
Tumblr media
My art style is
•cool
•easy to draw
•and funny lookin'
What did i learn from this whole thing i did? That everyone has a unique style, that even if they try to change it it still stays theirs and it's still unique
I also found out that everyone, small artists and big artists, has flaws! It's comforting to know that everyone has flaws so I know I'm just learning and getting better everyday
Another thing I got from this is that everyone's styles are always changing and warping. But thats fine! Because everyone's moving and changing, and the worlds always moving and changing!
So, don't be so hard on yourself if you're struggling to draw or find an art style, how you draw is unique to you and you'll like it one day
Just keep drawing everyday and you'll get there.
I suggest doing this challenge, on paper or digital, wether you color it or not, or post ot or not!
It's great to try out.

Interview with Fan Artist loycos!
Tumblr media
(Art by loycos)
So a few months ago, I was absent-mindedly scrolling on Tumblr (or was it Twitter?) when I came across something: an Adventure Time fan comic by an artist named loycos. As a person embedded in fan spaces, I find fanart like this all the time, but this time, there was something special about the art I was seeing. It was so... show-accurate!
I don’t mean that necessarily in regard to the art style (although it does feel right at home in the Land of Ooo, while still being its own thing with its own flourishes), but rather in relation to the characterization; the way loycos wrote the characters was spot on. She nailed PB and Marceline’s dynamic as former lovers who deep-down miss one another. She nailed Finn’s naive heroism and his one-sided crush on PB. She nailed Jake’s goofball energy. It was perfect.
In the past, I’ve only interviewed people affiliated with the show’s production, but I thought I’d mix things up a bit and reach out to some fan artists that I think are fantastic. As such, I’m delighted to share with you an interview I had with loycos, who answered my questions about her art, her history with Adventure Time, and where her work is headed!
What is your 'artistic origin' story?
[It’s] kind of a corny answer, but I've been drawing since I remember myself. My earliest drawing memories are drawing Clifford (the big red dog) fanart when I was around 5 y/o. I was always more of a "fangirl" artist, [and] I would draw characters from my favorite franchises to illustrate my headcanons and daydream scenarios I'd put them in. That hadn't changed one bit since. I had since gone on to study animation and illustration in official institutions which forced me to design characters and worlds of my own, but when I draw for myself it's always back to fanart (or studies). I don't have any OCs.
Are there particular artists or styles that you were inspired by and/or like to emulate or allude to?
I'd joke that my artstyle is just a mesh of all the franchises I've drawn fanart for over the years, but honestly, is it even a joke? I think you can easily recognize I had a Disney Phase like every other teenager (I didn't have an anime phase though! I know, I'm an anomaly) and [Steven Universe] definitely left it's fat mark on my style too. Out of [Steven Universe]'s storyboarding crew (which I followed very closely over the years) I especially love Raven Molisee and Jeff Liu for their wacky expressions and proportions, and of course Rebecca Sugar for their fluid and carefree lines. When it comes to art in general, I tend to prefer stylized, colorful and brushy styles over realistic or gothic ones, So people like Hue Teo and Patri Balanovsky pop to my mind (and my artstation feed, seriously look them up).
How do you approach your projects; what is your general art process?
It really depends on the type of project I'm doing, though, my [Adventure Time] comics were all pretty similar in their conception: I write down all of my ideas in my notes so I won't forget them. Then I either roughly sketch out the entire comic as fast as I can, or I write a script (if the concept is specifically very dialog heavy) and then sketch it roughly. Then I do the lineart and color, nothing too complicated. The one thing I think is worth noting in my long comic process is that I draw all of my panels on the same document- that way it's easier for me to make sure the characters stay on model and that my panel layout remains fresh. So basically, the way you read the comics on tumblr, as a long scroll, is the format I work on.
How did you come to find Adventure Time? What made you join the fandom?
Adventure Time is one of those shows you just know about, so I don't remember how I first found out about the show. However, I do remember when I started shipping Bubbline—after the episode “Broke His Crown” aired. I somehow ended up in their Tumblr tag and was blown away by the (by 2016's standards) blatant representation. Despite my obsession with them at the time, I never actually watched any episode that didn't feature the girls' relationship. I only started fully watching the show recently. But I did consume a lot of fan content, which I think helped me shape my own headcanons and such. After my initial interest in 2016 I put Bubbline back on the back burner and kept on my [Steven Universe] ramage, until last year's “Obsidian,” which brought me back fully on board the Bubbline decks around 2 weeks before it aired, so I was in maximum hype mode when I watched the special. It did not disappoint [and it] really reminded me of why I loved these characters and their relationship to begin with. I started drawing my own art for the ship shortly after, when I felt like the hype around the special died down and there wasn't much to keep me sustained anymore. I make what I want to see ;)
As for joining the fandom, I don't know if I can be considered a member, seeing how inactive I am most of the time and my very limited list of [Adventure Time] mutuals. I am extremely flattered that my stuff caught ATimers attention in a positive way.
You've done some amazing Bubblegum and Marceline stuff. What draws you to their dynamic?
I'm gay.
OK, seriously now. I have a soft spot for extremely feminine, dainty characters that are very reserved, so PB immediately marked herself as an obvious fav, and the road to shipping her with Marceline (who is such an obvious candidate and a multilayered, fascinating character herself) was a short one. I know calling PB dainty is far from a true statement, but that's what she appeared like on the surface and that's what caught my attention. Another thing is that I love relationships between immortal beings, I think it always adds another layer of complexity to any relationship, especially a romantic one. The whole "getting older without appearing like you've aged" and "watching everyone you love die around you while you stay the same" can surely make 2 beings bond, right? It always felt like PB and Marcy get each other in a way no one else can, they are very different on the surface but share fundamental internal similarities. Oh, and the fact that they're EXES? The romantic tension and the longing? The familiarity and banter they had in every scene they shared? This hit the jackpot on literally every relationship trope that I love. I'd much rather watch a "getting back together" than a "falling in love for the first time" story.
All of this and the fact that they [are] gay. It's really that simple sometimes.
In broad strokes, what is next for you as an artist and/or as a fan?
I have a few [Adventure Time] comics ideas\scripts on the back burner and one that is in the making. I think I'll dabble into some Nintendo fanart cause I've been playing a lot of Smash Bros and [Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild] lately.
I’m so excited to see what comes next! Either way, a huge thanks to loycos for chattin’ with me! If you’d like to check out more of her art, visit her Tumblr and her Twitter page!

Ok ill bite whats the worst mg series
alright, whats the worst magical girl series in your opinion?
Thanks you two for letting me do some yelling. The obvious guess would likely be one of the recent edgelord shows right? Magical Girl Site or something similar? But nay I say, for while MGS and Day Break Illusion and such and what not generally tell you what to expect right away. Don't like super violence and suffering? Watch something else is the clear message from the get go. One of the bait and switch series then like Madoka or maybe Yuki Yuna? For what faults they may or may not have, at least these series do something and are interesting, even if you're not huge on what goes down in the series. A parody then? They range from affectionate to banned in New Zealand but regardless of quality and their feelings for MGs, it's a parody. It's a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously (plus they're usually short so you can just forget about them forever).
So what makes a series terrible then, I am sure you are asking. IMO? Setting expectations for an interesting and enjoyable series, and then dashing them to hell.
Come with me below the cut, as I talk about Key Princess Story: Kagihime Eternal Alice Rondo!
Spoilers abound so if you care about those for a 15 year old series, click away.
Background: Kagihime was a 4 volume manga that ran from 2004-2006 that was picked up for a 13 episode anime adaptation near the end of its run. The manga is created by a pair (Kaishaku) who you may know for making Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto. Kannazuki no Miko, and Steel Angel Kurumi, and the anime had a script written by the same writer (Mamiko Ikeda) for Tenshi Ni Narumon who also did some script writing for Princess Tutu and Seven of Seven. The anime also had 6 character music videos which are fairly simple but a nice addition to the series for the main girls. Discotek has been publishing the anime in the states in recent years, and the manga was brought over by *squints at book spine* Dr Master Publications.
The Premise: Girls transform and enter weird outside of reality spaces to fight each other with giant keys to take each other’s stories to create a third Alice In Wonderland story.
Well, an off-brand Alice story written by Alternate L. Takion, rather than Lewis Carroll/Charles Dodgson, that while the series uses all the aesthetic hallmarks of the tradition Alice, the little we see of the in universe Alice story is clearly different. Which is fine, at the end of the day, it’s still about someone who loves the Alice stories and wishes there was more, and even makes his own fanfiction version. His? Oh yeah, while the girls do all the fighting, the main character is Aruto, a teen boy who loves Alice, and for reasons we don’t know till late game, can enter the liminal spaces that the ‘Alice Users’ fight in. He chases a girl who looks like the Alice he sees in his story, who is named Arisu, and gets roped into this fanfic battle royale. He is also the older brother of the very needy Kirihara, who also ends up being and Alice User. As does Kirihara’s bff Kisa. To round out the group of enemies-turned-friends-who-will-work-together-to-collect-the-Eternal-Alice-without-having-to-fight-eachother group is a young genius researcher Kirika who wants to know more about Aruto’s connection that allows him to enter the spaces where the girls fight.
Then there’s all the other girls, some of whom still have real importance to the story and some who have a few panels or 2 scenes total. But with a whole bunch of girls to design, the creators reached out to a whole lot of other people to have them create designs! Eventually the battle gets down to the last few girls, there’s a confrontation with the guy running the whole thing, and while the anime and manga vary quite a bit the whole time, in both version Aruto ends up with Kirihara. Oh and Arisu was created by Aruto’s super imagination powers.
The Promise: Here on is subjective, particularly with what I personally saw as potential from this series. because I need you to understand how much I want to like this series.
~Alice in Wonderland themed: I know some people aren’t alice fans and that’s fine you do you but as a big alice fan this is great. We have a few alice episodes and themed characters amongst series like CCS and MGRP, and even Alice themes in other series like Tweeny Witches and Alice 19th. But damn it I am down for Alice series.
~Giant Keyyyyyyyys: Yeah yeah Kingdom Hearts but these keys are much more staff like for a lot of the characters which ads and air of elegance rather than the KH ones that for me at least feel well designed for big ol props rather than actual weapons. We also get...
~Weapon variety: It counts as a key if it’s a thorn whip that can be shaped like a key right? How about a giant pocket knife? Crossbows can also be keys. Hush. And we have this variety because
~Guest Artists: For magical girl series where we have a variety of outfits designed by different people, we have Kagihime, Uta~Kata, and uhh I guess Magia Record? But that’s a mobile game with a hella number of characters and with how mobile game works I wouldn’t count it just because it’s less the intent of the series to have variety and more the nature of having lots of girls. (Precure doesn’t count because unless I missed a memo each season’s set is still by one designer). If a series isn’t about a team and therefore doesn’t need cohesion, bringing in other artists is a great way for variety and new looks.
~The long term goal: Fighting with other people who love the same piece of media you do in hopes of creating new material that will be viewed as official? That’s just fandom nowadays. But it’s a legitimate interesting concept, and opens up so many doors for a message for the series, be it ‘what you create is no less valuable than the canon work’ or ‘it’s hard to let go when something you love doesn’t have more to it but you can still love it for what it is’ or ‘bond with the people who like the thing you like ya idiot instead of fighting about it’. The concept is interesting and there are so many narrative ways you can take this.
~Gays: Between the anime and manga, we have at least 5 wlw. Is it a magical girl series without some gays? (side note- the manga had a short thing where the MC wears a girl’s uniform and is pretty comfortable in it and while there is no way this was the intent, between that and the emphasis on the stories that live in girls and how the fight zones have no men, I’m just saying, Trans girl Aruto.)
~Greater Fairy Tale Premise: We meet a Little Match Girl based MG who is obsessed with Andersen rather than the Alice books, and touch on a Sleeping Beauty character in the manga. The manga at least implies that classic stories and fairy tale authors uh. Live on in a liminal space as immortals with world warping powers within that world and there could be opportunities for other girls in the real world to fight for Little Mermaid 2: Electric Boogaloo.
The Good: Everything has positive points, no matter how bad it is.
~Character Designs: Some of those looks slap. As do most of their weapons.
~Backgrounds: I have a strong opinion on backgrounds in anime that can be easily boiled down to old watercolor backgrounds good, modern filtered photos as background bad, and as a 2006 series, this might not be Memole nice but they’re quite attractive.
~Splash Pages: Easily my favorite thing after the designs, each chapter’s title page for the manga just has a character standing in a setting. Which is not everyone’s thing I’m sure but it’s a nice simplistic way to let the characters breathe imo. Even if at least some of the settings were deffo traced. But that’s how backgrounds work to some extent? If I ever get to the Met again, I am tracking down this exact photo, but here is a likely candidate for an example.
~Different Versions: I do not understand the need to make an adaptation that tries to be a 1:1. Kagihime had the same ideas and characters and did some of the same beats but very much had a different finale story and a lot of changes in the middle (like the Alice cops in the manga). Again, not something everyone probably wants I’m sure, but I very appreciate this, especially since the Anime kept good pace with the number of Manga chapters (reading the manga again while watching the anime at 3.8x speed just now was very interesting to see the different interpretations of events in a different medium.)
The ‘Fine’: Yeah.
~Anime Visuals: Look 2006 was still early enough into digipaint that I will give it a total pass on these. The colors are too bright but in a very bland way, the lineart is nothing interesting, and the faces are. Iffy. But it’s not total garbage to look at (probably helped by backgrounds and character designs...) it just came out in an era where not enough people knew how to stylize things to account for the weakness of the tools of the time. (It was 4 years earlier but I feel Kagihime is the polar opposite of Chobits with its painfully bland color palette while still being just. Flat. Sorry for the drive by Chii.)
~Music?: There sure were songs. Obviously, they are nothing to me.
The Bad: CW for.... somehow all the big things to an extent.
~Fanservice: Look, I am fine with fanservice, especially for a series that’s, ya know, not targeted at kids, big Mai Hime fan here even if I would recommend skipping the panty thief episode. And honestly the series generally isn’t fanservicey, at least by the modern standards of having the camera choosing under the skirt rather than an over the shoulder shot like I’ve seen plenty in other shows. Even the sexier outfits like the rose whip dominatrix aren’t bad BUT. When the girls fight. One takes her phallic key and drives it into another girls chest between the boobs while the loser cries in pain and then her book comes out and when the victor rips out pages, the loser’s clothes also rip. It is very SuperS Amazon Trio assault metaphor-y. There’s also a bit of fanservice with the sister becauseeeee....
~Incest: If you read the premise up there, first wow good job because I’m sure not re-reading that, you might have noticed I said MC ends up with his sister. As someone who is a big mythology fan and watches plenty of anime, I have a decent tolerance for your obligatory ‘oh we’re siblings but actually cousins so our feelings are okay’ or whatever the fuck Citrus has going on I don’t know that series and I don’t vibe BUT. I have limits and boy did this series go beyond that because multiple episodes are dedicated to the sister being in love with the brother? And the brother returns her feelings but knows that they are wrong so he put everything he likes in his sister into his version of Alice who, of course, physically manifests as Arisu who he creates accidentally with his uh. Magic imagination powers. But again in both versions MC still ends up with his sister. Hey, at least the manga eventually said the boy was adopted when the sister was like, 3, so if nothing else no blood relations? The anime did not ad this. -_-
~Under Utilized Characters: Arisu’s gradual revelation that she has no childhood memories because she isn’t a real person is so interesting and they don’t do nothing with it but also? That’s the kind of thing I personally would love to dig into and Kagihime, while touching on this world shattering revelation, easily loops back to So Anyway She Should Fight For The Man and to hell with developing a life or personality outside of what has been written for her. The rest of the main 5 were 2 note characters which. Could be worse? The most interesting character ends up being the child genius who accidentally murdered her childhood bestie (and/or lover? depending on version) and her coming to terms with that (the friend is alive but the version changes how and why she thinks she’s dead). Then the villain has the motivation of ‘i lost my creativity and now have become an immortal living outside of normal space and am getting girls to fight each other because that’s like a story so I’m still relevant right?’. But shoutout to the anime for then taking death of the author literally. The numerous other girls are canon fodder outside of like. The manga version of the dead gf and the little match girl.
~Battle Royale: This is not a thing I have an issue with generally. Again, but Mai Hime fan, I need to read MGRP 11, BUT by not developing the non-main girls there is no emotional connection which makes them just canon fodder and that’s boring as sin for a royale system. The initial main character fights revolve so much around the MC guy being there that they fall flat, and the 2 or 3 final battles in both versions still feel without any stakes. Also for a royale thing most of the characters don’t actually die, which cool! Neat! Except when they do? Some nobodies and a somebody are murdered (at least in the manga) and the tone never feels like it’s supposed to be upping the stakes, it’s just. Some people are dead now. And do you want to guess which of the main characters died?
~Gays: Oh boy the best friend of the brother-complex sister is in love with her and (in the manga) dies. She does apparently get better for the last chapter but the death itself is only felt by the rest of the cast for a page or two before we go back to feeling sad big brother wants to kiss his mentally generated sister clone rather than his actual sister u_u. Bury your gays is nothing new, but I wonder if it was also intended to be justified because Guess Who Is Creepy and a bit Perverted? Oh look the lesbian keeps the used swimsuit of her beloved and manipulates events to get an indirect kiss and when she sees the sister trying to strange Arisu for a moment she decides to do it for the sister? It’s not good. You want bad gay rep in a magical girl series, well here ya go. We also had a nobody in the first(second?) episode whose story pages reveal her having a kiss with a girl, and then we also have the prodigy again and- in the manga- her. Uh. childhood lover who she thought she killed but the girl has been wiping her mind over and over so prodigy remembers ‘killing’ the friend and not the she’s alive so she can keep? fucking with her? Toxic!
~Sexual Content: But wait you say, you already covered fanservice! Ah but that is sexual content for titilation. This is sexual content for dramatic backstory! The red riding hood character was sexually assaulted, another character was manipulated into sex first as a teen and then more often to ‘get into the publishing industry’, and the same writer forces some aggressive kisses on the MC. None of it is gratuitous which is nice, but also, was it necessary? Not making a new point for this but read riding hood’s dog was also murdered so unnecessary animal death gets tossed on in there.
~Male Lead: You can have a male, non magical character as the main character surrounded by magical girls. This is not how to do it. If I can make a vicious and hopefully not understood reference, Aruto is basically Tate from the Mai Hime Manga. If you understood that, I am so sorry. If you didn’t, congrats! Don’t read the manga. Or do and send me asks about the iconic final page of the first volume (18+). Anyway, this dude is boring, everything revolves around him, BUT I’ll be generous and say at least this isn’t a harem series? It looks like it out of context but it’s just a triangle with a fun attached scientist and token lesbian.
~Premise: They didn’t make good use of it. The initial goals of ‘take other girls pages from their soul books because if we get enough we unlock a third alice book’ is good! And then we add the twist that that was never going to happen and either if we get all the pages we can grant a wish, or these fights are just happening for the amusement of and asshole. Either way, yeah okay I guess. But at no point do we ever achieve this forbidden wish granting book and the asshole just. Lives. Nothing happens to him. His peers don’t even dunk on him. The only real changes from the beginning and the end of the series are: the siblings are now chill with dating, and the scientist lady won’t turn into a child in magical spaces. Oh. Yeah.
~Why did we make this adult a child sometimes?: I think we know why. Stop trying to get those types of folks to watch your already meh series. I also could have sworn at points in the past looking up images for this series I’ve seen extra art for Yuuri the Thumbelina-y Alice User that seemed like it would fit alongside anything by POP. You know, the Moetan guy. If you don’t know, god I wish that were me.
Wrap Up: I have definitely forgotten some points and am well within my rights to ad to this whenever I remember more points but uh. Yeah.
Listen you want an alice themed battle royale with nice outfits? Rozen maiden is right there. Battle Royale magical girl series that’s good with fanservice? Mai Hime. Series with different outfits while being based on a classic story? Pretear.
Hope anyone who read all of this at least got what I was saying, even if they don’t agree with it. And thanks for reading because whoops.

AND UHHHH @  ALL OF MY MUTUALS THAT I DIDN’T LIST HERE. ILY ALL AND YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING AND MAKE MY DAY.
Alone on VALENTINE’S DAY!: Do you have a crush/significant other?
Yes. That’s all you’re getting out of me.
Can LYING Be Good?: Do you agree or disagree that lying is ‘okay’ in some situations?
I’d say that lying is okay in most situations. Small talk is just lying about caring about the conversation. Politeness is just lying about your true emotions. Most of the time, to get what you want, you lie about your intentions. As long as you don’t hurt other people, lying is fine and usually the best course of action. (Can you guess who’s side I was on during SVS? Society truly was built on lies)

Ok tumblr is messing around with me now and I have no idea if the first message sent but I read all my tags and I really do love seeing yours on my art
LISTEN. ARTIST.
I TRIED.
BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE’S A TAG LIMIT ON TUMBLR OF ONLY 30 TAGS.
HOW DO YOU. HOW. DO YOU EXPECT ME TO WRITE EVERY THOUGHT AND IMPRESSION I HAVE OF YOUR…YOUR….BREATHTAKING. BEAUTIFUL. MAJESTIC. ABSURDLY GORGEOUS AND INSANELY STUNNING ART.
IN ONLY 30 TAGS?!?!!?!?!?!?!??!?!
*sHRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK*
I would add here the gif of the bird SCREECHING but I don’t want to scare or spam you aklsjdfkladjglakdjaldkj
OKAY. LISTEN. I’M GOING TO CALM DOWN BEFORE BECAUSE…IT’S NOT. I MEAN IT’S NOT EVERY DAY THAT YOU GET SENT AN ASK FROM A
S  T  A  R
AKLSDJFLKDAJGLKDAJFDALKGJALKGAD
(Imma- Imma go on under the keep reading, yes? I just, I just DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH TAG SPACE, I WANT TO KEEP GOING HERE)
Okay, oKAY, I want to freak out because HOLY FUCKING SHIT, IT’S AN ARTIST THAT GETS THOUSANDS OF NOTES PER ARTWORK, IT’S THE GENIUS BEHIND THE PROMPTO AND NOCTIS QUOTING MEWTWO COMIC, THIS IS A SUPERSTAR, FAMOUS DIVINE ARTIST WITH ANGEL HANDS THAT DRAW PHENOMENAL ART, IN MY GARBAGE LANDS AND TALKING TO ME, I’M FREAKING OUT, EVERYBODY CALM DOWN
But I’m gonna try to STAY STILL AND KEEP IT COOL, because I don’t want to creep you out and to keep this relatively in order instead of making THE MESS OF A 3-PAGES LONG RANT OF YELLING AND SCREAMING BECAUSE HOH MY GOD YOU’RE TALKING TO ME AKLSDJLAKDJGADLKGJDA I DIE
So first of all!
I’m sorry it took me so long to reply. The week’s been sorta messy and busy since friday ahah, so even though I did have time to answer to your ask, I wanted to do it only after I had added the tags. You know, just to let you know that I did. And…to not give you more work or so you don’t browse through your thousands of reblogs, here is the link...it’s not much, I filled my 30 tags too quick and barely started saying something, but just to let you know that I did. Heh. ;w;
Okay, I just got attacked by a sudden GIANT WAVE OF SHYNESS, but I’m still going to say the tings I have in mind and want to tell you hnhgnhg
Thank you so much for reading my tags. Thank you immensely for taking the time to do that, really. I know how Tumblr can be so deadly quiet, and how most of the people who reblog (IF they reblog) put nothing in the tags, a few tag general stuff, and there’s only comments in 1 or 2 reblogs. I say this not to credit myself, it’s not that. It’s just that, with the quantity of reblogs you get, and you saying that you check them ALL out…well, thank you.
I know it can be tiringto check reblog after reblog and see nothing over and over again. Anyone else would just give up and stop checking because no one says anything. So thank you for taking the time to check not just my tags, but everyone else’s, despite it not always turning as you may wish ;w;
Also, thank you so much for taking the time to write to me. You didn’t need to. It’s too much of me to ask from artists to tell me if they want me to add comments or not. It even sounds rude, “YOU contact me if you want to know what I think about your art”. Gee. It can come off as rude and not right…but I think you understood me. And for that I’m immensely grateful.
Thank you for reading my tags, and thank you even more for dropping by to tell me you did. For each 7 artworks I reblog asking if they’re seeing the tags, 1 replies. In this case, it was you. and I’m so hyped about it, you have no idea. Thank you so much
Aaah, also, no other ask of yours made it in. This is the only one I had, so no worries. And even if a million had made it in, no worries! It’s so insane that you took the time to write to me once, AND stayed to make sure it sent? That’s so sweet of you, it really is so kind, thank you so much for worrying about that and being so attentive… ;w;
Oh no, this is getting so long, but I’d really like to say more about your art because the tags weren’t enough, seriously…I’m sorry I keep talking aksljdakldjg I’m sorry ;n;
I just wanted to let you know that that comic is brilliant. Genius in every way. Many see just the joke, which is great enough, but seriously, I looked at everything and it’s…insanely mindblowing in the most beautiful way ever. The art itself is GORGEOUS beyond anything I can say. I don’t have words enough and I lack the vocabulary to express how INSANE and stunning your art is, it’s truly…a jewel, but better and prettier.
Your artstyle is gorgeous no matter where you look at. Lineart, colors, textures, anatomy, expressions, there’s literally not a single thing that isn’t BEAUTIFUL. I’m keeping this very short because of how much I’ve written already, but seriously, your art makes my head explode because it doesn’t fit in my mortal brain. It’s so stunning, I have no way to describe it.
You’re FANTASTIC at making comics. I wouldn’t have known you need practice if you hadn’t added that in the tags. I love the flow and I think that it’s everything arranged in a very good way. I don’t know how to word it, forgive a non-native speaker ;n; But like, the way you placed everything where it is, the dialogue boxes and the characters, it all has a nice flow, and nothing looks off. I’m no artist but personally I’d say you’re AMAZING at comics
I’m in love with the expressions you drew, you have no idea. The sequence of Prompto confessing is insanely beautiful due to the load of emotion that it transmits. The joke is great, yes, but your add added it the real weight it needed and MORE. That 4 panel sequence is so GORGEOUS because it transmits and holds within all this pain, this serious sorrow, this huge weight of his identity crisis. Honestly, if you had decided to make it a drama, you’d have nailed it.
And you also nailed comedy FANTASTICALLY!! Which is insane, makin both things work out in such short lapse SUCCESSFULLY? Wow. That takes more than just “drawing pretty”.
What I mean to say is that you’re a complete, phenomenal artist. Visually and emotionally, you draw wonders. You capture emotions, you draw really beautifully, and you’re creative and everything flows.
And basically can I have an autograph aksldjdalkgjadlkgjad
I’ll keep this ask as my autograph because oh m y g o d what were the odds such a giant of an artist wote to me??? :)
SO YEH, I’M SO PROFOUNDLY SORRY AND EMBARRASSED FOR THIS RANT, I UNDERSTAND IF YOU’RE CREEPED OUT KLASJDAKLDGJDAKLGJADGKL I’M DONE I PROMISE AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
But yeh. Thank you again for taking the time to write to me. That talks very niceyly about you as a person, too… ;w;
I hope you’re having a FANTASTIC day!!

Thank u for that sweet sweet awase content, I love that boy
Thank you for liking it!!!! :O
Anon said:Do you take constructive criticism? (Not a joke lol actually curious)
Nope. Since I don’t study art, I’m not currently actively trying to become better at it, all I do is doodle whatever silly idea I have at the moment without an actual clue of what I’m doing while at it and post it cause people seem to like it when I do, concrit is literally the last thing I need. By which I mean, I already know my art could be way better than it is, but getting better at it isn’t really the reason why I’m posting it. To be honest, if I wanted someone to crit my doodles I’d sign up for an actual class to have a real teacher tell me how to get better, I wouldn’t turn to the first random anon on tumblr with no way of proving to me they have any more clue about art than I do
Anon said:Imagine this, Kirishima with really long hair
No need to imagine it when @50shadesofhq already did such an amazing job drawing him~
Anon said:Hey!!! I want to thank you for...existing 😁 Tonight I was feeling really sad and finding your art has “brought me back to life” so as to say, so thank you. Your art is incredibly good so please keep believing in yourself and your skills, and keep making beautiful pieces like you are doing now 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you!!!! So much!!!! I’m glad my stuff could help you feel better ;^;
Anon said: hi i just wanted to let you know that you're one of my favorite artists ever and you make so much good content for so many fandoms that i love like i first found your blog through haikyuu!! and then i found the bnha and now yowapeda and everything else aaaaaa i'm rambling now but whenever i see your art it makes my day and j wanted to say that by e
!!!!!!!!!!! glad you like my stuff!!!! and mostly glad you like ywpd, that fandom feels so small honestly!! :D
Anon said:Hey I just wanted to let you know that I love all of your artworks with all of my heart and it always makes my day a bit brighter to see that you have posted something new :)
Oh man thank you so so so so so so much!!!!! ;O;
Anon said:I'm not even all that familiar w awase but I'm still blown away by your drawings of them they look !!!! So good !!!
THANK!!!!! YOU!!!!!! He’ll play a nice part at some point next season, I hope you’ll end up liking him!!! ;u;
Anon said:I love seeing that kiribaku at the top of your art blog (at least on mobile??). It makes me feel so warm the moment I check your blog. (Still love the old banner too tho!!!!)
I’m glad you like it!!!!! Warm colors make me feel good so I wanted something like that on my blog :D one day I’ll change the icon too..... one day........
Anon said:I LOVE YOUR ART OK?? AND I MAY HAVE JUST SPENT TWO HOURS SCROLLING THROUGH YOUR BLOG BUT OH MY LORD IS IT WORTH IT. You are an amazing artist and I hope you have the most wonderful and brilliant of days. Ps. Thank you for giving bakubro the love he deserves PPs. Your jirou drawings make me unbelievably happy
THANK YOU!!! THIS IS SUCH A GOOD ASK I’M HAPPY THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! ;O;
Anon said:Do you still headcanon baku and Mina as dragon shifters or is it just Kiri at this point? (I still freaking love tiny dragon baku lol)
Yes and no! My fantasy drawings aren’t exactly telling a story, so I’m doing whatever with them - it’s not really headcanons, it’s just me playing around with any idea I find entertaining at the moment!! So yes, definitely, Baku and Mina as dragon shifters are still a thing I love a lot and I might draw more in the future! But that doesn’t exclude me drawing for the AU in a setting where only Kiri is a dragon either~
Anon said: Ur dragon Kiri half-shifted made me have this idea : if he n Baku r cuddling and he's like that and Baku feels an itch, he'll just rub himself against Kiri to do the scratching (Kiri isn't even bothered, nor complaining, Baku kinda looks like a cat when he does that and he's in l o v e)
You know anon, considering Kirishima’s quirk Bakugou could technically do that in the original universe too hahaha
Anon said:More band au bakushima pls!! 🙏 My crops are dying
Anon said:You better do the after show of the band AU or i will die. I mean... i already die with Bakugou say "pretty boy" to Kiri, but you know.... please do the after show asdfghj
Maybe soon!! I don’t exactly have a clear idea of how that plays out, but I enjoy drawing Bakugou like that so why!!! not!!!!
Anon said:I live for your art! Thank you for creating such amazing content ♥️
SOB thank you for liking my stuff and letting me know you do!!!!
Anon said:HOOOLLLYYYYY SHIT, THAT SKETCH OF BAKUGOU W THE HELLA EYELINER AND THE TATTOOS??? I AM SHOOK
GLAD YOU LIKED HIM!!!
Anon said:Oh mamma the way you draw Kiri’s forearms! Le swoon 😍😍😍
!!!!!! He’s a buff boy after all!! :D
Anon said:Are you okay with fans coloring your lineart, or does it bother you? (Not with the intention of posting anywhere, just for fun and maybe to submit it back to you later) I know how you feel about altering your work, but what's the drill for this specifically?
I don’t mind but you have to promise me you’re not posting them anywhere - if it’s just for your personal entertainment then it’s fine, I can’t really stop you anyway, but I really don’t want them anywhere online.
Anon said:Hello! I wanna say your bakugou and kirishima comics are adorable! I wanted to ask, do you think Bakugou would be as open with showing his soft and mushy emotions for kirishima around the others like in your comics? Like how he was okay with snugs on the couch, you don’t think he’d want to be more privet?
Sure, why not? Bakugou’s never hidden his feelings in the manga, nor has he ever felt embarrassed by them! He’s a bit awkward in showing affection I guess, but to me it feels more because he isn’t used to it than because he wants to hide it - if he were to start dating Kirishima he’d definitely have no problems with letting everyone know they’re in a relationship of that sort, I think :D well, it’s just my interpretation of it anyway haha
Anon said:Your art is just so beautiful, Im iN LOVE I CANTNWKWISIWIKW PLS KEEP DRAWING
I CAN TRY !!!!!!!! Thank you so much for the support!!!!
Anon said:Do you ever get that feeling when you have a ship and you see art for it and suddenly you get hit with a "oh fuck I really love them" cause that happens every times you post kiribaku ! I always get butterflies in my stomach when I see your art, you make the cutest scenarios and you keep their personalities right it never seems ooc. You honestly make the best comics/art I'm so glad you're in the bnha fandom
Oh my god thank you so much!!! ;A; sob
Anon said:you've heard of jiroukami but have you considered: jiroushido
Yup! I’ve also drawn them in the past!! They’re in my MinaJirou tag :D
Anon said:your band au is officially my favourite thing on this site i love it and i love you thankyou
Thank you so much holy heck!!!! ;O;
Anon said:Your art is so cute and makes me smile everytime I see it! Thank you for always making my day better!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! I’m!!!!!!!!!!! Glad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anon said:I’m so gay for your art it’s so fucking sexy dude
Oh my g od are you sure the word you meant to use is sexy I’m ??? !!!!
Anon said:Consider,,,,, bakugou with glasses
I did draw that in the past!!!
Anon said:pssst fran have u heard that in bnha light novel baku is actually scared of ghost story???
Seriously??? :O is there a translation for that part anywhere online?? :O :O

✨how did you get into MK? what position do u usually sleep in? How often do you spend on a piece of art that you take from sketch to colored? What are your favorite snack foods? Do you get your hair cut every 6 weeks and do you stick with the same look?✨
hmm mk is a bit of an anomaly for sure….even tho ive been sifting around webcomics for abt a decade now, i really only ever am keeping up w a handful and rarely actually pick up any new ones. i’m the same way w like, all other forms of media, like shows and music and stuff…its not like even me being all too critically picky, coz i can hardly ever convince myself to check out shit i know i do/will like. but anyways i suppose it was a couple yrs ago and me freezing my ass off in a barely-insulated terrible expensive apartment while dying of depression & it was the middle of the night & i wasnt tired, and sometimes i reread a comic coz i realize ive completely lost track of the plot or characters or something…so i was doing that and there was a guest comic by the artist for mk & i was like, well you know, thats cute and funny and i like how they draw, i’ll just put this in a separate tab and maybe come back to look at their comic for once in my life b/c its not like i hve anything better to do at like 4am. so i finished my reread and figured i’d check out at least a bit of mk & when it drops kip on you right off it took me like 2.5 pgs to he like “well so………he’s gay right? and a nerd?” and so then i was like, obviously i have to follow through on this Gay Lead. b/c i mean, you never really go into anything assuming that anybody will actually get to be Not Straight, no matter how obvious it seems b/c you can’t trust anyone. so even though its right there and makes no sense for him to be straight i was still like going along trying to keep my hopes down even tho there’s no other interpretation….even when the surprise came that he has a beautiful Ex Boyf & i had like a heart attack b/c that far along i was already like “woops i also love him” i was still like trying to come at it from some other angle like…… Maybe This Is Just… Um….. i dont remember but i was like ok but seriously this Has to be an ex right? i mean my god. anyway by that point i was also deeply invested in the fact that kip is v….v much many Char Types i love and xtreme relatable plus he’s flawless and deserves the best despite being doomed for the worst……. so anyways at that point it was like 7am & i was thrilled and yelling a bit about that sweet rare vindication of This Is All Gay Right and like gosh hope he gets kissed by like everybody…… and thats about how that went
oh god…… trying to find a sleeping position can be the worst a lot of the time. like, it changes up and i have to do the tossing and turning bit… sometimes its all huddled up and other times my body wants to be stretched out… im sabotaged by the whims of my body re its comfort tbh. like i’ll be fine in any position and then suddenly my limbs or hips or whatever decide they’re uncomfortable. the other week it was only sleeping on my stomach that was tolerable. i guess on avg i sleep on my side but theres no real standard position, i wish there was
phew i…honestly can rarely draw anything in a matter of less than hours. under 2 hours is shockingly rare. it depends on the day for sure, sometimes drawing comes more naturally, sometimes my focus is less terrible…. for a guess at whats average though, for like a usual drawing that i also add color to, i’d put it at maybe, 5-7 hrs? i’m awful at paying attention to when i start/stop something. and i have a lot of pauses in there b/c of the terrible focus bit. but usually i don’t do coloring thats too fancy so it only tends to add on a couple of hours to the lineart, which is helped along if i’m doing it digitally w how easy it is to erase stuff and not worry abt the sketch being too messy to clean up or whatever. sometimes i wish i could spend another eon on the coloring also, but you can spend just as much time on colors as the lineart and i like to do everything in one go too much for that really… plus just that i’m bad w colors and dont expect to ever be as good at them as with the lineart element of things. anyways tldr all you need to know is…i’m really slow :(
oh god snacks…. i love to eat anything really. i’ll make anything a snack or a meal or whatever. i like stuff like corn chips or just dry crackers… i like to eat cereal just plain… i’ll eat a box of corn chex any day. or a box of oreos probably in like one go. i am a fan of cookies and ice cream and everything. pretzel sticks are great too. fruit snacks are great… a few times ive just been in the mood to cut some like orange bell peppers into strips and eat that…carrots are amazing too… theres this cucumber/cream cheese dip that is…fantastic with chips. idk i like to eat most things
i actually used to tend to wait too long to get my haircut and put it off till it’d been like two months and was getting too long in the back and i hated it lol….. i know we’ve talked abt the Homophobia In The Salon how you have to try to wrangle the stylist into accepting that yes, you really want it that short, and keep them from trying to take it in their own direction. and i’m nervous enough w social stuff like that where i cant know what to say beforehand, and doubly nervous b/c of it being really stressful and exhausting for me to try to just like stick to what you actually want and explain this very simple cut to ppl who sometimes will act like they have no idea what you mean…and it would be triply difficult b/c back in the day i’d catch all this shit over having my hair as short as i wanted b/c my mom was having a whole internal shitstorm about me being a wholeass queer and so of course she was gonna flip out about how i look as if that will solve things for her. i always forget that i Was in fact abused for the ol “not seeming properly cishet” business. so the nervousness abt the haircut experience lingered!! but it helps that sometimes i’d find a really nice stylist who would be friendly and remember the general idea of the cut i liked, and i could stick with them and that was helpful. but for the past year i’ve really just been giving myself a continuous haircut myself w the occasional aid of a bathroom mirror, i’m not fancy. my Ideal Cut gradually got shorter and shorter over the years, w it now being maybe an inch and a half on top and shorter on the sides in that General Undercut format. i rly dont like much length on the back of the neck or by the ears lol…plus it doesnt help having glasses when your hair is getting too long. maybe it would be nice if i could someday dye it my favorite kind of blue, right. but in the meantime, as long as its short enough i’m good

What's your progress on drawing Time and Space? They look so nice ~
((1: Panic2: Art3: ????4: PROFIT!!!
Ok, but seriously though. MunZ here! And I’m more than happy to tell you about our process owo
Before anything though, I should say that there is no one way we draw for this blog. We both have different styles and preferred methods of drawing and finishing things, and thanks to our schedules, answers get done how and when they get done. So, sometimes we’ll individually sketch and line/render an answer, sometimes one of us will sketch and the other lines/renders, sometimes MunO will send me a traditional sketch/lineart and I’ll finish it digitally. It varies a lot.
That said, here’s a gif I made of my process, doing it digitally from the ground up! If you’d like to read a little more about each step, I’ve put a more detailed explanation under the cut, as well as the still version of the finished piece.))
Tumblr media
((1: Sketch
This is pretty self explanatory. I will note though that Time is a bit of a challenge for me as he’s a lot more animated than Space is. Still, his body is easier for me to work with.
2: Refined sketch
…I’m fussy and also a bit of a perfectionist. So a lot of the time I do my initial sketch with a big pencil, then go over it again with a thinner pencil to be certain of my line placements.
3: Lineart
The longest part of the process! I love doing linework, though it can be a challenge with the goops as they have very round heads and hands. Also what are heart shapes.
4: Colors
Thankfully this takes no time at all, so long as I’m doing it digitally. Thick outlines that are meticulously drawn and redrawn so that there are no gaps means I can just use the bucket tool, and since we have a set pallete, no time is spent choosing colors. I also add a gray background to color check. I have a set color I use for that in all my art. I should also note that I put every different color on a different layer for the goops. The reason is for the next few steps…
5: Shading
Their shading is pretty simple. Since I’ve put their colors on separate layers, I simply make a layer above and set it to be a clipping group. Then anything I draw that isn’t over top of where the color is filled in isn’t shown. I can easily throw a quick stroke of the shading color on them, then use the watercolor brush to blend out a bit of it, and it’s done. The shadows below them are just a bit of the watercolor brush, nothing special there.
6: Glitter!
This is the fun part. We have brushes meant for stars/glitter and that sort of thing, so it’s a simple matter to make another clipping group over any areas that need glitter, take a big brush, and go over them a few times! The glitter will even be divided up by color areas if you kept them separate, which I personally prefer. Each of the goops has a slightly different way I do their glitter. With Space, I’ll see where the most obvious paths are after a few random strokes, then bring those out a little with a smaller brush. For Time, I’ll give him a light background of gold glitter, add his swirls with another brush(the one I use for the blushes, actually) on a layer below that, then add extra glitter around the swirls with a smaller glitter brush. For the pendants and Space’s eye, it’s just a small version of the glitter brush.
7: Details
A bit of gold airbrush set to luminosity on Time’s gold areas(as well as the lockets), some light silver streaks on Space following the main trails of glitter, and some tinkering with his eye… and they’re done! All that’s left is to pick a gray for the background, and add any text if necessary.
All in all, to draw this image with both of them (with fairly neutral poses/expressions) it took me a little over an hour, without distractions.
Tumblr media
Anyways, that’s it! Hope this answered your question, and thanks for asking! I love talking about this sort of thing. ^^ ~MunZ))

things i hate: - doing traditional lineart - drawing challenge pressure conclusion: time for inktober i guess! (--:,
actually i saw this list and just REALLY felt like using it and it went pretty well so far?? so here are day 1 - 5!!! (i saw so many nice inktober drawings on my dash already and mine are so .... no effort at all. (-:, )
infos about those boys under the cut.
Day 1: Protagonist • Jennifer "Jen" Jäger (blackout retold) • My stories usually have more than 1 protagonist, mostly teams with at least 2 absolute mains (like OvF), and even blackout has 4 protags in total but ultimately Jen is the most important one of them so i chose her! She is a big ol' grumpy party pooper, daughter of a police officer and always pressured to accomplish the best in school and everywhere else. She also has alarmingly thin lips and sports a mean death stare.
Day 2: Antagonist • Valdemar "Vance" Korpela (Original vs. Final) • I actually wanted to use the blackout antag for this one because they don't look like a typical villain which would have been a nice change, but that would also have been a spoiler (blackout will launch this week hopefully, the prologue is almost done,,), so I ultimately chose Vance, the creepiest most evil looking person in the entire OvF-universe.... I just love him ok. Vance is a manipulative asshole i can't talk about much because it would be spoilery, all i can say is that he is absolute human trash and should burn in hell.
Day 3: Sidekick • Alex (blackout retold) [he doesn't have a full name yet ahha] • Technically, Alex is not a sidekick, just a side character who somehow got a lot more personality than originally intended because the prologue is written from his pov and @razuu and i were talking about him a lot,,, also he got a slightly updated design which is even addressed in the story later. long story short, alex is a basic fuckboy with no respect for women, who turns out to be gay and struggles with internalized homophobia and forced masculinity and all that stuff really really hard. He is an asshole but he just needs someone to educate him.
Day 4: Tempter (right hand to the antag) • Amon Valerian Cilley (Original vs Final) • The actual right hand of Vance, Amon! This one wasn't even that hard tbj. Amon is a pretty dramatic character who suffers a lot and also does some really fucked up things, but everything turns out ok in the end. He is a gay trans man in a relationship with a transphobic straight cis man who not only physically and emotionally abuses him just for the sake of it, but especially because he doesn't want to acknowledge that he is not dating a woman..... seriously fuck vance in hell.
Day 5: Comic Relief Character • Elias "Eli" Dalton (Original vs Final) • Eli was created purely as a comic relief character but has gotten a lot of story and purpose since then..... he is the upbeat, naiive and optimistic one of his group but in comparison to his original character he became drastically more serious, even tragic. I love him with my whole heart tbj. Eli is a 16-year-old boy from florida who lives with his single dad and tries really hard to keep his head up despite being bullied for being small and weak and generally "weird" and loud. When he meets Haru and Cassy, he finally sees a chance to change the status quo and become stonger and finally respected.

EPISODE 3:
Aloha, fellow Sakuga Seedlings!
Welcome to my case study series, Brain Vomit.
Name’s
Tuchimuchi Yoshinori – or just Tuchi…
And I enjoy animation. Especially animation from the eastern archipelago of Japan, also called “Anime”!
In this series, right here, I’ll be exploring Japanese Animation Production and enlightening this growing community and myself to the power they have in this expansive animated medium.
For today’s episode, I’ve chosen to discuss one of our most important topics that I’d love to talk about in great detail. And I want to be as sensitive and open-minded as possible, so please do not take what I say as any standard or absolute. This series is meant to enlighten, not to judge or criticize. But today, I want to discuss character design -- !!
Tumblr media
I hear you, I do, but there is a reason why. Hold your horses, guys!
So, Character Design---We understand the basic logistics, yeah? A character design is simply that, how a character is designed. What aspects of the character give them individuality and what aspects help relate to the world/culture they live in.
Are they young? Old? Human? Furry? Tentacle Monster? Whatever.
These are just the basic ideas...
Character Design is something some people understand it well and others… not so much. I refrain from putting up examples of bad character design as not to offend anyone. But, often things can get lost, over done or just a bit... lacking creativity.
Hence why today, I want to focus on breaking down character design--and not Character Design in a broad spectrum, but Character Design with the Animators in Mind.
Animators in mind meaning...?
Oh yes, character designing for an animator -- streamlined, easy to animate consistently and efficient.
So. let’s start broad and narrow it down, to help reinforce the points I want to explore…”
Q: What makes good character design overall?
First of all, I hate the idea of “good” or “bad” character design. It’s less about being good or bad, as those are more opinionated, rather more of a design being “successful”.
Depending on your perspective, design can be merely the aesthetic choices or a solution to a problem. But in reality, it’s a marriage of the two.
A: Since this is more opinionated than definite and I am not a professional by any means. Based on a multitude of different opinions across the net and through some readings that I’ll like below, these are the main 5 factors that in my opinion make for a successful character design:
1.) Silhouette
2.) Aesthetic and Style
3.) Reproducibility
4.) Exaggeration
5.) Fungibility
Let’s break all of this down…
Silhouette: The most straightforward. A silhouette is the basic structure of your character, most easily expressed when put into shadow or overlaid with a color that gets rid of lineart and detail.
Let’s perform a -- Silhouette Test-- on some characters, which I believe are all well designed.
(Insert silhouettes here)
What is the Silhouette Test? It’s simple really, take a character -- or a bunch. And turn them completely black, a silhouette. I recommend choosing a pose or a model sheet where the action does not overtake or mask important parts of the design.
Ask yourself these questions:
-- Does your character stand up to the silhouette test?
-- Can you tell which is which in a crowd of silhouettes?
Yusuke Murata of One Punch Man remake and Eyeshield 21 fame is known for having interesting background characters in his work -- fleshing out his world a bit.
Tumblr media
Now see if they stand out from each other and that of it’s contemporaries. If you can tell who a character is from the silhouette, congrats. You have the makings of a successful character design.
However, remember context is always important! Silhouette is not the end all be all.
Let’s try it out! Or better yet, let Extra Credits explain it every better with video!

(Check out their stuff! They have some great videos on Game Design)
There are many things that can help an artist create characters with different silhouettes.
For example:
-- Use different blocking shapes to build your character. Start simple and grow into complexity. Honestly, simple is always better.
-- Use the shadows of other objects to your advantage.
-- Study body types, I hear a collective group groaning--No. You can’t have every girl have the same huge boobs and not every guy can be a bara wet dream, if you want interesting and differing character designs, variation is very important -- OMNI-IMPORTANT -- even, let’s put ‘Omni” in front of it. This not a difference of opinion, this is just the basics of broad character design. I won’t name names, but many artists I love, realistically speaking, may not be good character designers--And that’s OK!
Build with shapes. Understand shapes and how they come across to the eye, I recommend this video by SuperEyePatchWolf to even go into that better than a couple of words from me ever could!
youtube
A bit of a tangent, but more my opinion: Here’s where Furry characters have a strong advantage, they can use animalistic features like ears, tails and muzzles and exaggerate them to make a more interesting silhouette without building up all this detail. Because I’ll be frank -- more detail to clothing and face without changing it’s shape is not gonna make your silhouette any stronger.
So when I see furry designs that are basic with just a lot of color or patterns, it doesn’t really work. As the silhouette test takes out the tertiary details and focuses on the form. If you’ve never heard of a sparkledog -- you are blessed.
Moving on!
Aesthetic and Style: This is where you get to get your creative side on. Be creative and show off your individuality! But focus on the character, think of their background and personality, make sure those are congruent to the world you are trying to build. This is where CONTEXT MATTERS!
Ask yourself these questions:
-- Do your characters have a distinct look? How does it compare to others with similar influences? How does it compare to my influences?
-- Can you tell what style is yours based on how they are drawn?
-- Does my character stand out from other characters I’ve designed?
-- Does my character's identity come through the basic design?
If so, then you passed! You probably have a strong aesthetic, and you may have also avoid plagiarism charges from other artists…
Seriously... I 100% understand having influences, but the “discount this artist” isn’t super appealing. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but at the same time -- most artists want to be seen for their individuality. Quite the double-edged sword. I recommend exploring yourself and your influences and expanding. Find new things in the world that intrigue you. Becoming better as an artist and designer is about exploring the world and yourself.
Always bloom proudly, as I like to say.

There are many things that can help an artist create characters with different aesthetic and styles.
For example:
-- Try understanding body differences and get creative with it. Life drawing. Life drawing is a necessity. Even if you cannot get into a class, sit outside and doodle people and their behaviors. There are plenty of sites with life drawing models with set time limits. I’ll put some links right here!
-- Understand character development. Understand your characters. A nerd probably wouldn’t have a suede jacket, a smug grin and greased back hair, unless the point of that character is dissonance of appearance and personality (And no, not all of your characters need to be this convoluted, most designs to speak for themselves. But in terms of audience expectations -- they should be able to tell some truth from a character’s appearance, Use those aspects in design.)
-- Keep your character simple before building complexity. Starting complex may leave you more in a rut than one would at first think.
-- Study other artists’ styles, study styles of art in general! You may find something that inspires your direction in design aesthetic.
-- And stay passionate about what you do. It’s very easy to compare yourself to others in a destructive way. I won’t be that guy that says “always be drawing” as sometimes we all feel unmotivated from time to time and that’s OK. That’s life. But keep your mind active and be aware of both the self and the outside world. In the age of the internet, it’s easy to forget what fresh air smells like.
I believe every artist has a personal style inside of them that they can use to split themselves off from their inspirations. But in my opinion, when artists begin to blend, it screams red flags about those artists’ potential being wasted -- so the harder you experiment and learn from reality, the better off you’ll be in the long run.
I know, I didn’t hold any examples here -- but there’s no way to define what is a good or bad aesthetic. It’s all subjective, so that’s up for you to discover.
Third,
Reproductibility: Can you draw your character easily -- as in like 5 minutes maximum? This is more of an animation perspective, but if you cannot draw your character over and over again in quick succession, you may want to rethink your design.
Tumblr media
(Burnout is plenty possible in any situation. Simplicity is merely a way to keep things moving.)
Is your style easy to emulate, but unique? You may have a style built for animation -- but with that does come danger from plagiarists. I know, I’ve been talking about it a lot today. And while I have never had the first hand experience, I’ve observed the feelings and it’s not a positive one. Maybe it’s out of my own fears in that regard. Who knows...
Character design. It’s a balance, really.
Repetition is key. That’s why simple is always best.
Got it down? Then you can design reproducible characters!
Things that can help you design reproducible characters:
-- Find things that flow with your hands. These characters will be drawn thousands of times, you need to enjoy drawing these characters!
-- Keep things simple, but not too simple that it loses aesthetic and style.
-- Look at model sheets and understand them. These are not tours to drive you to their destination, rather guides to finding the path for you.
Yeah... Reproductibility... This one isn’t too long or complex. Anime, while a bit full of it’s own tropes, tends to have great character at its best. While they may differ from the manga they may be adapted from, it’s all for the sake of animation in the end. As decades go on, anime is only getting better on a technical level.
Tumblr media
Simple, cute as hell yet badass in it’s own right! I have a bit of a thing for PreCure, especially Heartcatch PreCure! (This is Princess PreCure, don’t judge me!)
Moving on!
Next up: Fourth,
Arguably the most important in animation (as it is also a PRINCIPLE OF ANIMATION, see Episode 2 for more) is Exaggeration: This is how far your character can go before they become unrecognizable. No matter how they are drawn, you should know which character this is at all times. This is CRITICALLY based on the last three concepts.
How do I know if my character can be exaggerated well?
-- Keep your designs unique, reproducible and simplistic.
-- Learn about the basic animation principles.
-- Experiment, Experiment, Experiment! Get wacky with it, try drawing them in another person’s style. Can you still identify them?
-- Draw them in different poses and angles! You want to be able to draw them from any angle be it worms-eye, bird’s eye, dutch, over the shoulder... These are more filmography terms, but the point still stands. Animation is just film where your camera is imaginary and based around composition.
I may get some heat from this and there is a video that I’ll link that goes into pretty much all the points and go check out their stuff but -- Steven Universe while I love it -- does suffer from composition deficiencies... It comes off as if they cannot draw their characters from experimental angles and foreshorten well. There’s a reason why Mindful Education is such a successful episode composition wise -- Takafumi Hori is miles beyond the level of the Crewniverse in terms of raw animation skill and experience. Most high quality action shows take a lot of inspiration from anime in terms of composition because it set some lofty standards, which dates even further back to Asian action cinema then to American cinema and Disney.
It all comes back to Disney -- my mortal frienemy.
Anyway, got the basics down? Got your character take to the level that they can do anything in any way possible?
Then good, you can exaggerate your design because it’s very strong!
What if I need help exaggerating my character?
-- Don’t be so stiff. There’s a reason why Ash’s design was changed in Pokemon Sun and Moon! This is one of the major reasons why!
-- Imagine how they’d act in different scenarios… Now dial it up a notch! Get crazy! Artistic technique can be taught, but creativity and passion are talents! Animation is not for the faint of heart, but don’t give up if you feel the fire and desire in you! Chase it!! That’s why I’m here, encouraging more animators to flourish.
Lastly and an odd case,
Fungibility.
Fungibility?
Fungibility is the congruence and comparison between an outcome and the effort or resources put into it.
Think of a game for an example, let’s say Pokemon. This game is fungible to me in that the time I got out of it outweighed and exceed how much I put into claiming it. It was about $40-50 for Pokemon Sun and Moon and once the credits rolled and I reflected, I found it a worthwhile experience for how much I paid (and the effort the creators put into it to even have it exist on a shelf.)
It was Fungible.
How does this work in character design? Ask yourself this:
-- Do I like this character?
-- Do I love this character?
-- Do I love this character enough to put hours into drawing them over and over again?
If you said “Yes” to ALL of these, then you understand the fungibility of your characters and aesthetic.
There is no real way to define an individual’s fungibility in a concept or character design. It all comes down to learning about yourself and what you--yes, YOU, find enjoyable in your art. Most animation is made to make a buck--but great animation is made because you wanted to make it and enjoyed it.
That is what makes animation truly fungible.
Now, let’s take these broad concepts and narrow them down to an Animator’s perspective.
Imagine it:
You have to draw this character for a 12-episode anime, each episode 22 minutes working on an average of 24 frames per second (the number of drawing that make up a second of time is 24, but limited animation techniques allow many ways of working with this).
That’s about 31680 frames that you may have to draw this character. Which do you think will be easier and more flexible to be animated. If you don’t believe me, the Canipa Effect had a great video about it that I’m linking down here!
youtube
While both are designed for animation, if you chose the Sun and Moon design, then you better understand character design from an animator’s perspective. While subjectively, it may not be the most appealing (or you are clouded by a sense of nostalgia, which only dillutes creativity.) Thinking about it objectively, animation serves a purpose, even as small as being a stupid comedy or trying to tell a wholly intertwined narrative.
Opinions aside (I F**KING LOVE HIS REDESIGN) -- it is undeniable the success of Ash’s Sun and Moon redesign for OLM’s production of Pokemon. It shows in how the show is animated -- it is an animated series after all with many passionate staff members including Masaaki Iwane and Ken Otsuka to name a few.
Just watch the openings between each Generation.
Even if you think he “looks bad”, these are things to pay attention to and learn in Ash’s Character Design and its redesign:
-- What is the series trying to accomplish?
-- What has this series been notorious for?
-- What does this redesign change about that?
-- How successful has that been?
Character design to an animator is OMNI-IMPORTANT (there it is again, heh) hence why we are hitting this after Animation Principles -- because they need to be able to draw this character in any situation in any view, have them look cool while doing it and make sure that they understand the physics around the world this character lives in.
You may see people bring up poorly drawn in-betweens and the like during a critique of a new animation style (especially in Pokemon and Dragonball Super) but in those critiques, it is easy to tell the person does not understand how animation works. While having every frame be perfect is ideal, the focus in animation is not each still rather how they flow and convey movement. If you want fantastic stills read a comic. They are designed to look good when still.
When designing for animation, think of these:
-- How far can this character look off-model before it’s too much?
Let’s dip into that right quick. Off-model. The statement that a certain image or frame doesn’t match the model sheet. And in my opinion, it’s more contextual. For example, Naruto vs Pain... It may be off-model -- but it’s well animated... You love it or you hate it. But it’s important to understand it.
-- Have much can each piece be exaggerated?
-- What pieces are the most important to keep the overall design intact? This is where simplicity is important. You can warp a scene as a stylistic choice, but you know a character is strong that even when distorted, the character design is still clear. This ties back into silhouette.
The character designer has to be able to not only do all of this, but also know it from just a glance!
That’s crazy, right?
So, make sure when designing your characters for an animation screen, keep these things in mind.
Now then, what problems come from badly designed characters?
Well, let’s look from two design problems that are common in a lot of artists, once again, these are more my opinions than definite fact:
There is Over-Designing -- Where the character’s abundance of details not only make an animator’s job harder, but also shows terrible design sense.
And Under-Designing -- Where character designs blend without detail. Showing that there is not been enough detail in basic form to be unique.
What do I mean by Over Designed and Under Designed?
In simple terms, adding way too much to make a character stand out when the problem is on a design fundamentals level. This is often attributed to very erratic and complex clothing, patterning or other non-silhouette affecting changes.
Note: If characters aren’t supposed to look alike, make them look different. Just changing their clothes or hair without changing facets of their form and silhouette and saying from a stylistic perspective that these characters are very different is bad design. Period.
Tumblr media
(I’m throwing the shade at you Negima, but you aren’t the only member of this trope... I honestly enjoyed you when you got to be an action series instead of a harem.)
Look up Six Face Syndrome for a more detailed analysis. TVTropes is an ally.
A good way to fix this is often the silhouette test. Try doing a base silhouette too, removing clothes and hair to the central design. How much is the silhouette different without the clothes and hair?
Now add the clothes back, how much has the silhouette changed?
Now add the hair, how much has the silhouette changed?
If the only differences are seen from the hair and clothes, you may want to rework your design.
Who doesn’t like swag though, but this shouldn’t be the only distinction between characters.
By Under Designed, the context is that not enough detail is there to make characters stand out.
This can often be from a lack of interesting silhouettes as well, but also can be from not enough detail. It’s definitely harder to under design compared to over design, but Six face syndrome is often a sign of Under Design. Once again, if I put up an example of a “bad design” it’d get too subjective...
I knew this episode was gonna be more dice-y...
OK. How can I work on characters that are under designed?
-- Look back at that Aesthetic and Style note from earlier. These are the essentials in adding the right things to an under designed character, taking them from bland and forgettable to great and memorable.
It’s truly a balancing act of not too much detail to become forgettable and frustrating to draw, but not too little detail to make characters blend in with each other.
My best advice is look at artists that truly have mastered this concept as well such as Character Designers in most well received anime.
For examples:
Sushio: Character Designer for Gurren Lagann, Panty and Stocking and Kill La Kill.
Toshihiro Kawamoto: Character Designer for Cowboy Bebop, Golden Boy, Noragami and Kekkai Sensen.
Chikashi Kubota: Character Designer for One Punch Man, One Piece Movie 6 and Robotic; Notes.
Akio Watanabe: Character Designer for the Soul Taker, Bakemonogatari and Popotan.
… And this is only scraping the tip of the iceberg.
All of these artist come in many shapes and forms from Sushio’s ability to exaggerate his designs, to Kawamoto’s realistic, sexy and cool designs, Kubota’s ability to make important features stand out and Watanabe’s soft and moe, yet varied designs.
But something important to notice is: ALL of these designers are veteran animators. So they understand what a design needs to both stand out and look well when animated.
Even in adaptations of existing manga, the Character Designers must be able to adapt characters that looked great in still images to look great in motion. Hence why illustrators and mangaka are most often NEVER Character Designers in Anime, but know that this is not mutually exclusive.
There have been a few healthy exceptions, i.e.) Shirow Miwa, character designer from Kiznaiver is an illustrator for the group Supercell.

“Well, I think that’s enough for one day…
Next week, I think I’ll take a break and just kinda relax a bit. I’ve been hella busy with adult life things. But I’ll be back at the end of the month with Episode 4. It’ll be a hefty one -- Where I can start diving into Sakuga and seeing how liberal I can get with “defining” tropes...
