I call myself a Visual Novel dev, yes, but there is certainly a whole lot of irony that I just don't want to make a heavily romance-themed 'dating sim'; nor do I have any intention of making one.

Hi Friends. Quick update on my life. I'm very excited about having new music to share, but I just wanted to let you know that one of the reasons why I haven't been able to participate in the press and promotion leading up to the release of Javelin is bc I am in the hospital. Last month I woke up one morning and couldn't walk. My hands, arms and legs were numb and tingling and I had no strength, no feeling, no mobility. My brother drove me to the ER and after a series of tests—MRIs, EMGs, cat scans, X-rays, spinal taps (!), echo-cardiograms, etc.—the neurologists diagnosed me with an auto immune disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Luckily there's treatment for this — they administer immuno-hemoglobin infusions for five days and pray that the disease doesn't spread to the lungs, heart and brain. Very scary, but it worked. I spent about two weeks in Med/Surg, stuck in a bed, while my doctors did all the things to keep me alive and stabilize my condition. I owe them my life.
On September 8, I was transferred to acute rehab, where I am now undergoing intensive physical therapy/occupational therapy, strength building etc. to get my body back in shape and to learn to walk again. It's a slow process, but they say I will "recover," it just takes a lot of time, patience, and hard work. Most people who have GBS learn to walk again on their own within a year, so I am hopeful. I'm only in my second week of rehab but it is going really well and I am working really hard to get back on my feet. I'm committed to getting better, I'm in good spirits, and I'm surrounded by a really great team. I want to be well!
I'll keep you posted as I progress. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. And a huge shout out to all the incredible caretakers of the world working night and day to help us heal. They are living saints.
Be well, be joyful, stay sane, stay safe. I love you.
yours truly from a wheelchair XOXOXO Sufjan Stevens

Part 20 - New Life
From her spot around the crackling fire, Xilä felt as if she were being watched. She didn’t need to look up to know who it was though.
Since their arrival at Awa’atlu, she’d gotten her fair share of stares and peaks and glances. She’d expected it really.
Physically wise, Xilä was no Omaticaya, so she didn’t blame the Metkayina people for their curiosity. She herself was curious about them.
So when the other clans had arrived- all in their varying physicality's, she wasn’t the only one of interest and it was nice if she were being honest.
But Aonung however, well his stares were different. She didn’t think they had anything to do with her features, not really. It didn’t feel rude or inappropriate either. More… intrigued, perhaps? Confused?
He always watched her as if he had a question right at the tip of his tongue, but he never asked. Instead he’d always pursue his lips and look away.
Tonight, a large group of them- all mostly within the same age bracket, had escaped to a nearby little island, which was nothing more than a sandy beach with very little vegetation.
Away from the rest of their families, they built an impressive bonfire and made themselves comfortable on woven mats whilst pouches and cups of strongly brewed spirits and fermented wine were shared around.
Xi politely declined any offers of the alcoholic beverages and was thankful that no one questioned her about it.
Their large group was scattered along the shoreline, creating clusters of conversations and activities and attraction was heavy in the air.
For those single- the women whispered and giggled amongst their groups, eyes darting over to whichever male had caught their attention.
As for the men- well, their own peeks and glances weren’t as hidden either, not even the ones being silly and dumb by daring each other to do stupid things by the water’s edge.
There were even couples- some mated like her and Neteyam who cuddled and spoke quietly as if they were in their own world, gazes locked and glistening with love.
The vibe and atmosphere all reminded Xilä of the night she’d completed her rites. They were all so young and full of life. And the rare freedom to let go and be themselves- away from elders or younglings, it was refreshing.
Unable to bear the feeling any longer, Xilä finally turned away from her mate and met Aonung’s intense stare.
He was quite a sight to see- he always was really. Aonung had not one, but two gorgeous females under his arms. A flirty, bubbly thing- the daughter of an Anuri warrior who seemed to be animatedly talking his ear off.
And the other- a sultry, vixen of a Metkayina woman whose lips appeared to be permanently attached to his skin- her mouth lavishing and sucking at his neck with gusto. The woman whispered something to him- something that made his lips quirk devilishly.
“I’m beginning to think your friend has a staring problem,” Xilä murmured to her mate.
“He’s asking for it now,” Neteyam replied through gritted teeth. “I won’t warn him a second time.”
She probably shouldn’t have said anything. “Ignore him. He’s probably doing it on purpose, trying to test your patience.”
“Sure.”
Xilä tittered when he wrapped a possessive arm around her and allowed herself to be shifted out of view- face pushed into a hard chiselled chest. She didn’t need to glance up to know her mate was probably boring holes into Aonung’s head.
Their bickering hot and cold, frenemy relationship never failed to amuse her. They were adults- men, but yet they behaved like boys around each other.
The Metkayina male gave him a knowing smirk before returning to the conversation with the group surrounding him- his voice so important that all eyes fell on him to hear what he was saying.
Lo’ak’s laugh pulled Neteyam’s attention away- and Xilä’s.
“They’re adorable, aren’t they?” she whispered, peeking out to observe the couple seated nearby. “He’s completely smitten.”
Neteyam watched Lo’ak and Tsireya. His head was in her lap and their fingers were interlocked- they looked every bit in love.
He’d never seen his brother so open with affection. Not with anyone really. Lo’ak was a heartbreaker- unknowingly to himself. Kiri didn’t joke about his fan club for no reason. His brother had charm and the moves to have any woman at his feet- something Neteyam had once upon a time been jealous of.
But this? This open display of ‘this is my woman’- Neteyam had never seen this from him.
“Oh yeah... He’s a goner. She’s good for him.”
When the drums and bone flutes began with a deafening roar, Xilä was quick to find Kiri- both girls pulling a hesitant Tsireya along to dance amongst a growing crowd.
And while she was busy, Neteyam enjoyed conversing with a spontaneously formed group of men he and Lo’ak had befriended during their stay. There were K’ayno and Astlu- cousins from the Tipiani clan, Ye’k- a warrior from Ta'unui and Cxian the son and next in line Olo'eyktan of the Sarentu clan.
Neteyam of course couldn’t help himself and still kept careful watch on Xilä, lips quirking upwards every time his eyes landed on her. She was enchanting as she moved- standing out from everyone else.
She and Tsireya eventually made their way to him and Lo’ak- Xilä begging him to dance with her- eyes dangerous and weaponized to make him weak, however could he say no?
They danced for what felt like hours- yipping and  twirling on fast feet. Rhythmic music beats speeding up, Xi’s hips moved wildly in time with the drums. Neteyam followed, eyes heated and intense on the woman before him, hands greedy and unable to not touch her skin while he stole and planted kisses wherever he could.
It was electrifying.
There was no one else but her and him.
As the night wore on, almost everyone was on their feet, bodies moving carefree and minds loose as they gave in to the spirit of the music.
Eventually needing a break, Neteyam left Xilä in the trusted hands of his brother, sister, and now soon to be sister-in-law. Xi loved dancing, she was not stopping any time soon, he knew.
Returning from relieving himself in a secluded patch of shrubbery, he saw a lone figure near the water’s edge.
“Not in a dancing mood, I see,” he teased, startling his friend who had been tossing pieces of his meal into the calm ocean, a sort of game with a few clustered ilu.
“Not really, no. Although I must say it was quite shocking to see you of all people out there with the rest of them. Last I remember from your previous visit, you turned down almost every teenage girl who’d dared muster the courage to ask you to dance.”
Neteyam snorted. “Yeah well what can I say, Aonung? Those girls weren’t my wife.”
Aonung's flickered to his, and the same curious expression he’d been staring at Xilä with was now directed at him. He stared as if wondering who the man in front of him was- as if seeing him for the first time.
“Alright, enough. Spit it out. What’s the matter? If I didn’t know you, with all the looks and staring you’ve been giving my mate lately, I’d think you were interested in her- but I do know you so I know you’re not stupid enough for it to be that. What’s going on Aonung?”
Aonung’s gaze fell. Jaw clenched in irritation, he pretended to be far more interested in the rolling sea.
Before Neteyam could speak again, they were interrupted.
“Aonuuung, come dance with me,” a Metkayina woman crooned through slurred speech. She plastered herself to him, most likely unaware that Neteyam was standing right there since her fingers tried to creep into Aonung’s loincloth. “Or do you want to sneak any instead? I’ll do that thing with my tongue like last time and maybe we could-”
“Zers’i,” Aonung chided, although there was no real bite to it. “Go find someone else to warm your bed tonight. I’m sorry, but I’m not very good company right now.”
“Oh…” She pouted dramatically- huffing in disappointment when he pulled her hand away from groping him. “Well maybe next time then, yeah?”
“Next time,” he promised.
Neteyam coughed and looked away when the woman promptly kissed him- practically sticking her tongue down his throat in goodbye before finally stumbling back to the dancing crowd.
“Brother, don’t even.”
But Neteyam couldn’t keep a straight face.
Aonung scowled and flopped to the ground with a sigh when he heard his friend’s stifled titters turn into a full bellied laugh.
“Right… no, because while I’m thoroughly traumatized, that- that was entirely too entertaining.”
“How’d you and Xilä happen?”
“What?” Neteyam sobered up quickly at the sudden question.
Aonung blew out a breath and hung his head, elbows digging into his propped thighs. “I need a mate. Soon.”
Understanding dawned upon Neteyam. He glanced over to the crowd in the distance and once he spotted Xilä who was squashed between Kiri, Tsireya and a few other familiar females, he slumped down onto the sand beside his friend.
“A mate… You’ve been given a deadline I’m assuming?”
“A year. One fucking year,” Aonung rasped.
“Shit.” And Neteyam thought his six years were ridiculous.
“I don’t know how you do it. I don’t think I’m cut out for all this. How do you deal with the pressure? We have to take over from our fathers, follow in their great and mighty footsteps- lead an entire clan of people who hold us with the highest of expectations. They expect us to find a woman and make sure we produce the future generation, they expect us to be the best examples and not step an inch out of line because when we mess up it’s-”
“Our responsibility and we should have known better… yeah.” Neteyam rubbed the back of his neck. He knew exactly where Aonung was coming from- from each and every side. “Believe me I get it- all of it.”
They sat quietly for a few long minutes- the drums and yips and hoots being the only thing they heard until Aonung broke the silence between them.
“Your Xilä is great- amazing. I’m halfway not joking when I say sometimes that I’d steal her from you… but she baffles the shit out of me.”
“It what way?”
Aonung shrugged. “She’s as in love with you as you’re in love with her. Right?”
Well now Neteyam was straight up confused. “I’d say so, yeah.”
“And it’s not all an act?”
“Fuck no. What are you trying to get at?”
“The last time you were here, you said you’d probably never take a mate. You said- what was it again? Oh right, that you hated the pressure of being “the chief’s kid and wish you had the guts to do things your way.” Did I remember all of that right?”
“Impeccable memory there, brother. You should also note that I was sixteen and an idiot.”
“Skxawng relax,” Aonung chuckled, amused by Neteyam’s sudden defensiveness. “I’m glad you found happiness, truly. I’m simply looking for it myself. You saw a couple of the others-” he jerked his chin towards a certain group of men- men like them who either followed in their father’s footsteps, or “married” into it. “Not everyone like us gets lucky like you.”
Neteyam absorbed his words. He knew arranged matings were the norm for most clans. Some pairings eventually found love, while others tolerated the match. Neteyam knew he was blessed, this trip had solidified it as much.
Of the many Na’vi who’d shown up to Awa’atlu, he and Aonung had met some of the unlucky ones- the ones who’d taken another out of duty and expectation. It wasn’t that they were out right miserable, but it was clear as day… They weren’t really happy.
“I guess I should be grateful that my parents are allowing me to find my own mate and haven’t just thrown someone at me… K’ayno over there”- he pointed to the Tipani man- “his mate was picked out for him before he could even talk. They’ve been together for eight years already. They’ve got a kid and another on the way… does it seem like there’s an ounce of affection in that relationship to you?”
“Eight years? He’s only two years older than me..”
“Yeah. And I don’t want that. Couldn’t do it.”
Neteyam distractedly nodded in agreement, mind whirling away.
“How’d you choose her though? Xi? How did you decide to spend an eternity with that one woman?”
“Eywa.”
“Eywa? That’s a given, ‘Teyam. I’m being serious here.”
“And so am I. Look, just like you I got a deadline, not only that but a blood-oathed yes from me, sealed the deal- I had no choice. At first I did try to make a connection. Nothing felt right. I fooled around with a couple women- though, not as openly as you, my friend,” he said, making them both chuckle. It eased the tension somewhat. “But it wasn’t until Xilä who practically landed in my arms, did I know. Eywa’s to thank for that.”
After another quick glance to his woman, he continued. “She’s impossible not to love. It was fast. I didn’t even court her. I claimed her as mine without going through all the traditional bullshit, and pissed off our mothers and half the clan while at it… and I have no regrets. I’d do it all the same way in a heartbeat.”
Aonung’s brows rose high at the admission of pissing off their mothers and made a playful jab that made the conversation veer off topic for a couple minutes.
“Man, your story was sweet and all, but that tells me nothing. How’d you know it was Xi?”
He considered the question. “I cared.”
“You… cared? That’s it? It was that easy?”
“She was the first thing on my mind when I woke up and the last before I slept. It might sound trivial, but I cared about whether she’d eaten dinner or what her plans were for the rest of the day. I wanted to know everything about her. What her favourite food was, what her past was like, what she wanted for her future. I wanted to know what her fears were and what I could do to make them all go away. I hated sharing her- wanted her all to myself all the fucking time. And… and I’d never felt an ounce of any of that with anyone. Ever.”
Aonung had an indescribable look on his face as Neteyam spoke. He shook his head, brows furrowed in hopelessness. “I don’t even know where to begin looking for someone like that. Not that I even tried looking yet, that is.”
“So don’t.” Neteyam shrugged, “This might be shit advice, so take it at your own risk… but maybe you shouldn’t look. I had about given up until Xilä came along. Maybe it can work for you too. Eywa will hear your heart.”
Aonung reluctantly nodded. “Thanks,” he said in a tight voice, and Neteyam knew his thanks weighed heavily- that it meant more.
“Oh and by the way, if you tell anyone about this little conversation, I’ll deny it and kick your ass. I’m not giving up hope for round two with you and beating you this time around.”
“I’d like to see you try.” Neteyam shoved him with a grin of his own.
His friend's chin jerked forward to where Xilä stood a couple feet away, seeming unsure if she should interrupt.
“I think your pretty mate misses you,” he pointed out, taking in the way her cheeks were flushed and hair was wild and askew from her dancing. There was no doubt she was gorgeous and although he was wholeheartedly happy for Neteyam, he still felt that subtle pang of jealousy.
“I’ll see you bro,” Neteyam said, eyes drawn to his waiting wife. They both got to their feet and slapped arms in parting.
Aonung watched Neteyam greet his mate, head ducking low to claim her lips, one palm cupping her cheek, the other pulling her close while Xilä tucked her fingers into his belt.
“Hi baby,” he heard Neteyam murmur, “you ready to go?”
Xilä whispered something that Aonung couldn’t make out, but it made Neteyam laugh and kiss her again, deeper as if he hadn’t seen her for ages.
And when they broke apart- voices hushed and eyes intensely locked, Aonung didn’t miss the way his friend’s palm spread across the span of Xilä’s stomach… or the way they both looked down to where it rested, smiles matching in the moonlight.
~
The old device gave a loud whirring noise that made all three of them cringe and wince in discomfort. Xilä in particular slapped her palms to her ears to try and muffle the sound, while Neteyam himself clenched his teeth together- ears flat to his head.
“Sorry! Sorry! Lemme just- oh don’t do this to me now.” Norm’s fingers moved furiously across the keyknobs and the instant the high pitched sound ended, he released a joyful WHOOP and raised his fist in the air. “It works! I am a fucking genius.”
Neteyam chuckled and peered over the older man’s shoulder at the large, clear monitor screen. The glass had a slight crack on the top left corner, but then again the thing was most likely ancient after all.
Xil watched too, fascinated by the numbers, letters and moving lines that flooded the “page” Norm had brought up.
“Alright then genius, lets see you get it up and running now.”
They left him to it, and it took him another half hour filled with curses and threats at the poor device, but with a final few strokes of the keyboard, Norm was looking back at Stephan and Max- their background being the familiar scenery of the labs back at Home Camp.
Between him and Stephan, they made a few more tweaks, and then- finally then, Xilä was staring back at her parents who were also awed by the technology like her.
“Xilä! Oh magnificent Eywa- Jxo, look, look it’s our Xilä!” Salveen was yelling at the top of her lungs. “Darling, can you see us too?! Can you hear me?!” the elder screeched while her face pressed up into the glass.
Norm, Xilä and Neteyam smothered their amusement while watching a very patient Max explain to her parents how the communication worked and that they could speak normally.
“We’ll give you some time to catch up, but I’ll be back, okay?” Neteyam murmured before he and Norm quickly made their way out of the designated mauri used for communications- a makeshift lab of some sort.
“Hi,” Xilä breathed, smiling wide at the sight of them after so long, fingertips gently pressed to the glass.
“Oh I miss you, my sweet girl. Darling you’re glowing, you look so beautiful, doesn’t she, Jxo?”
Jxo grunted in agreement. “When are you coming back?” was the first thing he said.
Xilä’s smile faulted a little, she was going to have to tell them. “I miss you too. So much. Have you been taking care of yourselves?”
“Bah, we’re fine. Just fine. Oh I have so much to tell you though. You’ll never guess who broke off their betrothal!”
On and on Sal went, filling Xilä in on all the latest gossip of the Camp. Xilä awed and gasped and laughed throughout it all- giggling, especially when Sal would throw out a “right, Jxo?” to which the man would simply nod or grunt in agreement.
Xilä loved them both so much. Right now all she longed for was to hug them, to physically see them in person. She missed them a ridiculous amount.
She perked up when she heard a familiar shriek in the background.
D’avi and Yalnïk appeared with their two babbling children. “Xilä!”
“D’aviii!”
L’eya was plonked onto her grandfather’s lap and then an overly excited D’avi invaded most of the space on the screen and started blubbering away- much like her mother had done before.
There were many “I miss yous” and “look how shiny and long your hair has gotten!” and “when are you coming home?”
Both sisters were momentarily in their own little world and Xi was saved from answering her sister’s last question when L’eo shrieked- the baby clearly needing some attention.
Yalnïk and D’avi proudly filled her in on the twins' newest milestones. L’eo was even more a talker now, and Xilä had just about burst into tears when Yalnïk pointed to her and asked his son to say hi to his aunty Xilä- to which L’eo strung together a jumbled mess of words that sounded exactly like it.
L’eya had finally taken her first steps and was now cautiously toddling around after her brother who’d Xi had had the joy witnessing his own first steps before she’d left.
Jxo had gotten up to give Xilä a little demonstration by placing the baby down on shaky legs. She was still wobbly and didn’t want to let go of her grandfather’s fingers, but she managed to make a couple solid steps before falling on her bum. L’eya’s bottom lip wobbled in preparation to cry but still distractedly clapped her hands along with everyone else when they’d cheered her.
Xilä had tears running down her cheeks by now. “Ah my babies, I miss you two so much,” she sobbed whilst smiling back at the toothy little grins of her chatty excited niece and nephew who blew her sloppy kisses.
“Do you want me to come get you?” Jxo suddenly asked- voice gruff and no nonsense as ever. He kept staring at her as if trying to figure something out. “What’s that damn boy doing to you? You keep crying, darling. I don’t like it.”
“Jxo!” Sal chided but her mate paid her no mind.
He simply handed her L’eya and came closer to the screen, frown deepening. “Where’s he at, Xilä? I want to talk to him.”
Xilä couldn’t help laughing while she frantically tried to remove the evidence from her under her eyes and cheeks. “I’m fine, father. I am. Neteyam is as wonderful as ever to me. I just really miss you all. Finally talking and seeing you,” she sniffled, “just makes me really happy.”
Her father seemed to buy it after a couple more of her assurances.
Her family asked about life at Awa’atlu- Yalnïk in particular was highly interested in the fishing techniques and gear- which Xilä suggested he ask her husband instead- she’d not really paid any attention to the job.
D’avi told her that Leati and Ze’lu had finally started courting- much to Fe’ska’s displeasure and apparently there was a very public argument between the mother and daughter that was all the clan could talk about for days.
They spent another half hour of bonding before Neteyam returned and quietly asked if she was ready for him to interrupt. Crouched beside her with a warm palm to her thigh, he greeted her family and caught up with them- marvelling over how much the twins had grown in the few months they’d been gone.
And when the Sully family started trickling in- Spider included of course and when Mo’at appeared on the screen as well- it was like one big happy reunion.
Mo’at had eyes for only her at first, ignoring everyone else in favour of asking about her health. The Tsahìk was not usually the fretting type, but with all the questions and attention, Xilä had a feeling that the grandmother knew.
Afterwards Lo’ak introduced them to his lovely future mate who shifted nervously under Mo’at’s assessing gaze. D’avi saved the awkward encounter by complementing Tsireya’s hair, and from there, the two became quite chatty.
Finding the right moment, Neteyam stood, cleared his throat, calling for everyone’s attention. He squeezed the back of his mate’s neck in comfort when she leaned her head against his leg.
“So, I’ll admit, I had a bit of an ulterior motive for making all this happen. We- Xilä and I have some news we’d like to share.”
A soft gasp was heard through the computer- D’avi.
“Oh I knew-mpf!”
Yalnïk covered his mate's mouth like he’d probably had to do a thousand times, and shot Neteyam a sheepish smile and nod to continue.
“Right, um, baby?” He offered her his hands and helped her stand.
Xilä was nervous, but with an uncontrollable excited grin, she pushed down the bunchy material of her long slitted skirt which sat high up on her waist and revealed the little bump she’d been hiding for the last couple of weeks.
“Surprise! I’m pregnant!”
The noise that erupted was deafening- cheers and screams and cries of happiness which was mildly overwhelming.
Neytiri was the first to wrap her up in a hug, pulling back to cup Xilä’s cheeks with a blinding smile before she was leaning over to do the same to her son.
Sal was just about squeezing the life out of poor Jxo as she squealed and jabbered on and on.
“I knew it!” D’avi was telling Kiri whilst taking a whining L’eo into her arms, and blindly pulling at her top so her baby could feed. “She’s got the glow- and the tears.”
“Shit, you’re right, the tears! I knew something was up,” Spider laughed, “no regular sane person cries over fruit- Ow! Kiri!”
Kiri rolled her eyes at him, then made her move to congratulate her brother and sister-in-law.
“XiXii!” Lo’ak shouted from across the room. “I’m really going to be an uncle? You- you’re not pranking, right? Because this is the best day everrrr! Babe, hold me,” he fake sobbed dramatically, throwing himself at Tsireya.
A frowning Tuktirey had made her way to her eldest brother and patted his leg to get his attention. He’d been wrapped up in a hug by his father who was teasing him about his upcoming journey of fatherhood.
“Hey there, baby sis.” He lifted her up with a dramatic groan and planted a kiss on her cheek.
Tuk poked his nose and then frowned at Xilä who was chatting away with Mo’at and her family through the screen. “You’re still gonna love me the most right?” she pouted. “Even when the baby comes?”
“Aw, Tuk. Are you worried about that?”
The little girl shrugged and played with the beads on his choker. “Täylley said when her sister had a baby, everyone forgot about her. She said they only ever wanted to play with the new baby. Just like everyone sometimes does with L’eo and L’eya.”
Neteyam knew the feeling Tuk was experiencing all too well. He was the eldest of four after all.
“I’m sorry your friend’s feeling that way but I’m sure that’s not the case at all. And it definitely won’t be the case for you. Who do you think is going to teach the baby how to build a fort or paint the best looking flowers I’ve ever seen?”
“I can climb the best in my class. I bet they wouldn’t know how to do that either.”
“Nope. See, they’ll need an expert like you to show them.”
“Yeah, I can show them… but only when they get older. When they could talk- and walk,” Tuk said, hesitantly as if trying not to get too excited.
“That’s right.. You know, the baby, and L’eo and L’eya are going to need someone they can look up to. Someone awesome, and brave and smart. Someone who can-”
Tuk’s eyes were wide as she absorbed her brother’s words. “Me. Me! I can be that person. I know I’m only seven, but I can do it! Almost- almost like a big sister, right?”
Neteyam kissed her cheek again and playfully tickled her side. “That’s right.”
Xilä shook her head at her mother’s question. “I haven’t really been sick, mostly nauseous around certain scents.”
“Oh you lucky bitch,” D’avi teased without heat. “These two had me constantly throwing up for the first four months straight, and then it was a constant fight or dance party inside me for the other eight.”
“What has Ronal been giving you for your daily nutritional maintenance?” Mo’at asked with a slight frown.
“A couple things I’m unfamiliar with. But I feel fine and my energy is good. Once I have a nap in the afternoon, I’m not overly tired for the rest of the day.”
“What worries you mother?” Neytiri, who was at Xilä’s side, asked.
“I know not about the Metkayina’s ways. I would be far more comfortable knowing Xilä was under my care. How far along are you, dear? Did Ronal confirm?”
“I’m nearing the end of my fifth month,” Xilä admitted with a hand to her stomach. She knew where this was going. She knew it was time to share the other part of the news with her family- news she was dreading.
“She- Ronal strongly advises against me returning home until a couple months after the birth.”
“What?!!” D’avi and Sal exclaimed together. Even Neytiri- and Kiri, who had just joined, glanced at her in alarm, Jxo’s lighthearted expression turned to stone.
“We don’t leave here for another two and a half months and by then I’ll be too far along to risk the journey by ikran… I’m sorry mother, I-”
“No… No, Tsahìk, tell her it’s fine,” Sal gently demanded- though a hint of hysteria poked through.
“I’m afraid Ronal is right. I was against you going on this trip in the first place. But it wasn’t for me to say at the time- and the risk was far lower. As much as you may not like it Xilä, the safest thing for you and the baby is to stay there.”
~
Neteyam didn’t think he could ever tire of the beauty spanned before him. Even at night, Awa’atlu was a sight to behold.
He and Xilä sat on the beach while calm waves rolled in, kissing the tips of his toes before fading back. His pretty mate sat between his propped up thighs, head and body molded to his chest while he cradled her bump.
Since they’d found out she was expecting two months ago, her bump had grown- still small but prominent enough that she couldn’t hide it anymore.
“You’re quiet tonight. Too quiet.”
“Just thinking.”
“More like overthinking. I can hear your thoughts a mile away, sweetheart… Tell me.”
She sighed. “I think it’s finally registered for me that we’re actually having a baby… a baby who’s going to be here in only a couple of months. Our baby, yours and mine… I- I’m going to be a mother.”
At her tone, Neteyam’s fingers paused their gentle caressing on her bump. He said nothing, waiting for her to continue.
“I know we’ve had conversations before and I agreed to all of this, and I’m not backing out- I’m not. But I’m scared, Neteyam. Eywa gave us a precious gift.”
Her hands came up to rest over his. “I’m scared that I’m going to mess this up somehow. I don’t know the first thing about being a good mother. I mean, look at last month- I completely freaked out when I felt our baby flutter inside of me for the first time.”
Still listening, her mate hugged her closer, chin nudging her temple, propped thighs pressing into hers.
“My birth parents messed me up. Their own parents messed them up too. I want to break that cycle. I refuse to be like them. But it doesn't stop my worrying and I- Ugh… You probably think I’m being silly bringing this all up again.”
“Xilä…” Neteyam licked his lips and exhaled a breath. “You’re not alone in the way you’re feeling. You don’t think I worry about being a good father? Of course I do. But we’re in this together. You and me, baby. We’ll figure it all out together too. And you what? We’re going to mess up. We’re going to make mistakes. There’s no perfection in all of this.”
He flipped the arrangement of their hands, his covering hers as they rested against her skin. “But you know what? The little one we created inside there? We’re going to try our damn hardest to be the best parents we could possibly be for them, and we’re going to love the heck out of our kid. ”
“Yeah?” Her head tilted to meet his gaze.
“Yeah, baby. You and me. Always...” He ducked and kissed the tip of her nose. “You’re going to be an amazing mother, Xilä. Our baby is lucky.”
Just as Xilä was about to respond, a sharp gasp escaped her lips instead.
Neteyam tensed. “What-”
“‘Teyam, I-” She grappled for his palm and moved it lower- just under her navel where she’d felt it.
He was going to ask her what was wrong when he felt it too- he felt the light pressure press into his hand, a small little first hello from his baby.
“Was that-” And if he thought he’d imagined it he certainly didn’t, because he felt it again, and then again.
“Oh Eywa,” he whispered, meeting her awed ecstatic expression. “Was that the first time? First kick?”
“Uh-huh. Oh! There it is again.”
“Well hi there, little Sprout. Are you finally saying hello?”
“Sprout?” Xilä chuckled.
“Yeah, been calling them that in my head since your tiny bump first appeared.”
“Sprout. I like it- it’s a cute nickname… Hello, baby Sprout,” she sang to her tummy.
“Speaking of names, we’re going to have to pick one ou-”
“‘Teyam.” Xilä suddenly sat up and turned to give him her full attention, finality set in her expression. It had been eating her alive and now she was more sure than ever.
“I know Ronal said it’s not safe- but I really don’t want to have the baby here. I want to go home. I want us to go home.”
And without hesitation or worry over how he was even going to make it happen, Neteyam gave her a firm nod. “Okay. Then we’re going to go home.”
~
“Are you going to get big like D’avi was? She was so huge! Bigger than Täylley’s sister when she was having her baby.”
“A-ha! Um, maybe. D’avi was having twins after all.”
“Oh right… Is it only Sprout then? They’ll be lonely inside of there don’t you think? Oh! Do you remember the christening grandmother Sal took us too? The one where her- her friend’s daughter had three babies?! You should do that Xi.
You should grow three.”
“Three?” Xilä spluttered with a laugh. “Why three?”
“Three’s better. There’ll be one for me, one for L’eo and one for L’eya to play with,” the seven year old stated matter-of-factly.
“I see… Well, I’m sorry I can’t make that happen. I don’t think it works like that. And anyway, Ronal confirmed there’s only one little one growing inside of me right now.”
“Oh. Mm that’s okay too, I guess. We’ll just have to share, but I’ll be the baby’s fav-”
Tuk stopped. Her brow wrinkled as she pondered in thought, fingers pausing their works on the pile of sand she and Xilä were constructing.
“Xilä? Do you think Sprout will like me? Täylley fights all the time with her sister’s baby- and he can’t even talk yet! She said he’s always pulling her hair or biting her finger! Can you believe that?”
Xilä tried her hardest not to laugh at the little girl’s theatrics. “I think the baby will love you, Tuk. Just like I do. I’m a little jealous that my baby will grow up having someone amazing like you in their life, honestly.”
“I am pretty amazing, huh?” Tuk nodded seriously, making Xilä smother another incoming chuckle.
Tuktirey scooted over on her knees, sandy little hands reaching out to rest against Xilä’s bump. “I think you’d be a really great mommy.”
Xilä sucked in a surprised breath. “Yeah? What makes you say that?” she whispered.
“Just because, and my mommy and daddy said so too last night,” Tuk shrugged while she continued to rub Xilä’s belly, rendering the pregnant woman slightly speechless.
“Why’s the baby so quiet? Can you make Sprout do the kicking thing again?”
“Baby’s probably sleeping. Lately, they seem to like keeping me awake at night with all their stretching and kicking. Shall we see if we can wake them up?”
After a couple nudges and feeling around, they finally felt a small, almost barely there kick which made Tuktirey giggle then pout when the baby didn’t move again.
“I think Sprout’s a bit grumpy today. Probably telling us off for disturbing their sleep.”
Tuk sighed dramatically, a sigh that reminded Xilä too much of Sal. “Okay, well let's get back to work then. I’ll finish the mountains and you dig the hole for the lake. Then we can fill it with water.”
“Hey, Tuk,” Xilä called when she caught sight of a lonely figure. Ronal and Tonowari’s youngest son was playing in the sand by himself a couple feet away. “This seems like a really big task. Why don’t you invite him to come help us?”
“Ohh, great idea!”
Once the trio completed their masterpiece and the kids decided to run off and play near where Neytiri was helping shell clams with a couple other women, Xilä stepped away and walked toward the shoreline.
A cool breeze sent her hair flying. She shook out the thin shawl she’d been sitting on and wrapped it around her shoulders instead to combat the chill of the wind.
Neteyam and Aonung were still where she’d left them since she’d come out here. They were further out- knee length deep in the crystal clear waters as they fished.
Xilä bit her lip at the sight before her. She openly ogled her mate, appreciating the ripples of his back muscles and biceps while he worked the massive net in his hands. Aonung must've said something funny, because her husband's shoulders shook slightly.
“Can you not look at my brother like that in public, Xilä?” Kiri complained with a dramatic groan, making the pregnant woman jump as she approached. “I get that your hormones are all over the place but sheesh. Every time I see you it’s the same damn look. No one needs to see your fuck me eyes in public. Bleh.”
“Well hello to you too. I’ll remember this the next time you want to drag me to the training rings to spectate and find that Tasam’s the one who’s conveniently already there, mid-fight. I’ll remember to tell you the same thing when you’re shooting him your own fuck me eyes, as you call it.”
Kiri’s mouth flopped open to argue a retort, but she quickly shut it when nothing came out. “Shut up,” she seemed to come up with, failing at hiding her blush while Xi laughed.
“Do you miss him?”
“A lot honestly…” She made a face. “Is that weird?”
“Not at all. You like him, it’s okay to miss him… Do you find it weird?”
“Yes. I find the entire thing strange. We went from never hanging out, to pretty much spending all of our free time together. And now I’m wondering, how’d I never noticed him before? It’s like one day he just appeared. And he’s so…”
“He’s so what?”
“Unexpected.” Kiri settled on. She sighed. “Did you know he told me he’s liked me for years? Years, Xi. I didn’t even notice. It took your sister one afternoon to pick up on it and meddle her way into creating this thing between him and me.”
Xi drew into the damp sand with her toes. The waters rolled in and covered her feet, erasing her artwork when it fell away. “Honestly? I’m not surprised you didn’t. I’m sure you’ve not even noticed your Awa’atlu admirer either.”
“What? Who?!”
Xilä jerked her chin towards Rotxo’s direction. The quiet man seemed to always appear wherever her sister-in-law was. He was currently seated nearby, whittling a spear whilst shooting not so subtle glances in their direction.
“Are you talking about Rotxo?!”
“Mmhm. He’s definitely got a crush. Very sweet too, don’t you think?”
Kiri stared at him with a tilt of her head, brows furrowed in thought. “Huh.”
Xi snickered.
A comfortable silence fell over them, where they both got lost in their own thoughts. Xi returned to appreciating her husband’s backside while Kiri pursed her lips as if forcefully trying to keep words in.
“Tasam said he’s going to ask me to court when we get back home.”
An audible click was heard when Xi flung her neck towards Kiri, mouth open in shock, then morphing into excitement. “And what did you say to that?”
“Nothing… and then I felt bad because there was a whole awkward silence moment happening while my brain went haywire. He told me not to say anything yet. He wanted me to take the time away to really think about it before making a decision.”
“Aww Kiri. This is exciting. Do you know what you’re going to tell him?”
“Not yet,” her sister-in-law replied, but there was no hiding the blushing smile she tried to rein in.
A splash had them both looking out at the sea again.
“Oh look, here comes, your admirer, and I’m not talking about your husband,” Kiri deadpanned.
“Hello beautiful,” Aonung called out, wading through the waters towards them with his and Neteyam’s catch for the morning.
“Stop flirting with my wife, skxawng.”
Aonung jogged ahead of him and sent Xilä a playful wink with his good eye as he passed.
“Better get out of here before he gives you a matching black eye, you fool,” Kiri taunted. She followed after him then broke off and headed towards Rotxo who’d beckoned her over.
“I really still can’t believe you punched him, ‘Teyam. You’re not boys anymore. You use your words, not your fists!”
“I did warn him though. He’s the one who decided to keep flirting with you,” her husband shrugged as he made his way closer. “He knew he had it coming.”
“Handsome! He only does it to piss you off. You could just ignore him. You know that right?”
“I like my solution better.”
“Of course you do.” This man never ceased to amaze her.
Like an insect to a flame, when he got in reach, Neteyam’s hands crept under her shawl and immediately found her belly, fingers trailing over the smooth firm skin.
“Hi,” he whispered in greeting, ignoring her exasperated expression and kissing her anyway. “How’s my little Sprout doing today?”
Sprout gave a big kick as if awakened by the sound of Neteyam’s voice- as if saying hello daddy!
“Quiet until now. Our baby always knows when it’s you.”
That made him happy.
“What are you doing later? If you’re not busy tonight, do want to go on a date with me?” he asked with a wiggle of his brows.
Xilä pressed up onto her toes and looped her arms around his neck. Her bump prevented her from getting closer, but she made it work.
“Always… Will there be sex at the end?” she teased quietly.
“It’s on the list of activities, yeah.”
“Good. We haven’t done that in a while and I miss you.”
“It’s been only four days, Miss Greedy.”
“Exactly, it has been four days. I’m glad you’ve been keeping track. You’re the one who keeps putting off every one of my efforts.”
“Yeah, cause… baby, you’ve been so tired lately and- hey, don’t even,” he said, halting her objection. “Sprout’s been keeping you up a lot with all the kicking and you need to rest. So, I’m making sure that you do when you can. Even if it means, no sex sometimes.”
Xilä stared up at him for a long minute- taking her time to roam over his facial features. “I love you. What did I do to deserve you? I must have done something right- something big.”
“Stop.” He was trying so hard not to blush. “I hope you remember you love me the next time you want to rip my head off for simply breathing too loud.”
“That was one time.”
He raised an amused brow as if saying really, babe?
“To be fair you have been behaving ridiculous lately. Actually if we’re checking, pretty much since you found out we’re expecting.”
“When have I ever been ridiculous?”
“Are you kidding me? I have a whole list of instances, but if you want more recent- You tried to ban me from hanging out with Spider and Lo’ak just this morning at breakfast!”
“Because the idiots wanted you to go with them to explore Cx’ove Creek!” he hissed. “Who in their right mind invites a pregnant woman to go exploring a srakat infested water cave for fun?”
“I told you already, they were just being nice and simply offered. I wasn’t actually going to go! You didn’t have to be so bossy about it.”
“But I thought you liked it when I was bossy?”
She turned flustered. “Well yes, but-”
Neteyam silenced her with a kiss. Then another when she was about to protest and one final one before she finally gave up trying to argue. “I love you too by the way. Are you hungry? Have you had your second breakfast yet?”
She shook her head with a grumpy frown, eyes following him when he squatted in front of her.
“I think your mama’s mad at me, Sprout,” he whispered to their baby, kissing right where felt a poke, “but don’t worry, I’m going to feed you both and then I think we should all take a nap, and that means you too. Can’t keep waking her up every night, alright?”
They both grinned at their baby’s nudge.
“Alright,” he said, getting up, “time for second breakfast.”
Second breakfast. It made her chuckle every time.
When Jake had picked up on her habit of having another meal after breakfast and before her first lunch, he started calling it “second breakfast” which was some sort of inside joke between him and Norm.
They tried to explain the movie where the joke came from. There was something about a quest and a ring and a creature called a hobbit?
And although it went over her head, second breakfast stuck.
~
Their final two months at Awa’atlu flew by, bringing many changes along with it.
The majority of the other clan leaders and clan representatives had by now returned to their homes, but for the Sully company, they’d stayed the longest. Jake and his team’s roles were far too important for the massive project they’d started.
What they had accomplished was far from simply great- it was incredible, completely world changing. They had gotten the clans of Pandora to come together. Uniting them in a way that was marked as historic.
With Norm’s guidance, a temporary form of communication between all clans was successfully up and running. It also aided the new system they were trying to implement for the sharing of resources which was finally underway.
And thanks to it, Neteyam was able to secure a safe solution for his wife to return home…
The moment he saw her, the man’s jaw dropped. His grin broadened at the sight of her midsection. “Well look at you, kiddo!” Stephan laughed as he gently hugged Xilä. “The bump suits you, doll. Congrats, darling.”
“Thank you,” she smiled, proudly, hand automatically running along said bump. “Nice hairstyle, it suits you,” she replied, taking in his new-do. The sides were shaved and the hair in the middle was short and spiky.
“Much more me, right?” he winked, moving forward to their packed things to grab up three overstuffed satchels in one hand and a wrapped heavy net in the other. She’d gotten Aonung to organize the specially crafted gift for her last week- she couldn’t wait to give it to Yalnïk.
Neteyam and Lo’ak had just strolled into the marui when she awkwardly tried to bend to pick up a bag with the intention of following after Stephan. A belly bump made simple everyday tasks difficult sometimes, she was still adjusting.
Her mate was quick to tell her off however, mildly scolding her for even attempting to lift anything.
Xilä huffed. “We’ve talked about this, Neteyam. I’m not an invalid. At least let me help carry something out to the ship.”
“Here.” He handed her a small pouch of seaglass stones she and Tuk had collected which made Lo’ak snort when Xilä shot her husband an unimpressed look.
He took off with his own armfulls- the large case he’d brought his weapons in, a thick rolled up pelt and the last three satchels that held their belongings.
“Four more months. Just four more months,” Xilä sang to herself. “Have I told you that your  brother is driving me crazy, Lo’ak?”
“Only two or three times a day since you told us you were expecting,” he teased.
“Ugh! Everything is don’t lift that, don’t go there, that’s too dangerous, my baby shouldn’t be eating that, eat this instead, you should rest, you should sit, you should sleep! Eywa! If I didn’t love the man…”
“Hey, don’t look at me for help. You’re the one who willingly chose him as your mate. You knew what you were getting yourself into…” His playful words fell away as he stared at her. “I’m going to miss you, XiXi.”
“Don’t do that, Lo’. You’ll make me cry. Do we really have to do this now?”
He clicked his tongue sympathetically. “Come on. I’ll walk you out.”
Xilä took one final glance at the now sparse marui before Lo’ak led them out onto the bouncing pathways.
“I’m going to miss you too, you know. You’d better not hold any blessing celebrations over you and Tsireya without me.”
“Nah. I couldn’t even if I wanted to. After that stunt Neteyam pulled with you, mom would kill me in a heartbeat, and Tsi’s parents aren’t people I want to cross either. Even grandmother threatened me on our last call. She wants to meet Tsireya in person before I officially ask Ronal and Tonowari for their blessing.”
“I get it. You’re bringing her on your visit in a couple of months right?”
“Yep. So you better not have that baby until we arrive.”
“I still can’t believe you’re moving out here. I am so happy for you, though.”
Lo’ak stopped and pulled her in for a hug, being extra careful not to squish her belly. “Hey Xi? I don’t think I ever apologized… but I’m sorry I was such an asshole the first time we met. You’re hella awesome.”
Xi hugged him a little tighter.
The beach was crowded that morning- much like it had been on the first first day they’d arrived. Many Metkayina surrounded Stephan’s ship, all awed and fascinated with the odd metal, bird-like aircraft.
From Xilä’s viewpoint she could see the eccentric Avatar giving a couple of the younglings a tour through the wide glass windows at the front of the ship.
This was it. It was time to return home.
Her and the Sullys’ goodbyes were bittersweet.
Awa’atlu had been their home for the past six months. She had formed deep connections, friendships and had grown attached to the sea and all the beauty that came with it.
“Take care of him for me, will you?” She overheard Neytiri asking Tsireya as they embraced. “He can be a handful sometimes- too stubborn for his own good, but he really is the sweetest boy.”
“Are you sure that contraption is safe?” Ronal interrupted, to ask Jake who was chatting with Tonowari. “I don’t know if it’s any better than your tempered ikrans. It doesn’t look like it.”
“It’s safe,” Jake assured. “They did a lot of repairs on the ship in preparation for this trip. Xilä and the baby will be well protected.”
She gave an unimpressed hum, but said nothing else on the matter. Her expression softened when Xilä approached to bid her goodbye. “You better bring that baby with you next time you visit. I can already sense your child will be destined for great things…”
Xi was finishing making her rounds when a voice called for her.
“Are you not going to say goodbye to me, beautiful?”
“Aonung.”
“Tsk. Aw come on Xi- I’m hurt, wounded,” he joked solemnly- palm over his heart.
“Take care of yourself, okay? I mean it.”
His smile fell a little. “I’m going to miss having you around. It was sure fun riling up your husband… I never did get to fight him again.”
A chest plastered against her back and she automatically leaned into it. “Yeah, cause you know you’d lose again, you skxawng,” Neteyam teased from over her head with a possessive palm to her round tummy.
Xi shook her head, highly amused- there they went again.
She was really going to miss this place.
~
Xilä’s reunion with her family was a joyful one. Welcomed home with open arms and all the love they had to give, she knew she made the right decision to come home.
Returning to the forest eased Xilä’s worries. It was safety, it was warmth and love. It was… home.
And although they’d been gone for six months, she and Neteyam had settled back in quite quickly and were able to return to their routines just like before.
She resumed her studies with Mo’at, eager to share all that she’d learned from the metkayina and Neteyam returned to his duties as a high ranker, along with all the other responsibilities he had under his belt.
What was most exciting was catching up on how much she’d missed out on.
Kah’lee and W’aote were on some sort of weird break where they weren’t talking but would still have the occasional “fuck session.” W’aote apparently was ready to settle down, but Kah’lee wasn’t- which was strange because before Xi left for Awa’atlu, it was the other way around. Kah’s hesitancy to officially court him sparked an argument between the two, thus creating the weird separation.
Leati and Ze’lu however were going strong. The female warrior loathed public displays of affection but Ze’lu appeared to be a stage five clinger- Kiri’s words, not hers. The man was completely in love and would smother his woman in affection despite her grumpy, lackluster protests.
Xilä personally thought they were a perfect couple. He calmed her bitchiness and temper tantrums and she brought him out of his shell. It was the perfect balance.
The twins' development, however, amazed Xi the most. They were toddling around everywhere now, and always chatting up a storm in a mixture of baby babbles and their ever growing learnt vocabulary.
They were also both fascinated with her belly bump, especially whenever Neteyam was able to coax a big movement from Sprout- tiny little hands patting her with excited squeals.
And speaking of babies. Xi and her husband had done a lot of preparing for their little one’s arrival. Xi had never sewed as much as she did before- Sal was a big help in that department.
Meanwhile Jxo and Neteyam did a lot of upgrades and rearranging of their tent in their spare time. Jake had pitched in too, only he called it baby proofing.
Her father had also built them the cutest little cot she’d ever seen… It was very similar to the ones he did for his first two grandbabies- and yes, she did cry when he gifted it to them.
Since finding out that they were going to be parents, the mated pair were eager to absorb as much information and advice from those closest to them. And sure, they would have the support whenever they needed it, but they wanted to learn to do as much of it as possible on their own.
As she neared the end of her pregnancy, Xi had grown increasingly miserable. She couldn’t move as fast as before. Her bump prevented her from certain tasks, her feet ached all the time, she could never find the right position to sleep in and quite frankly, she was just about ready for Sprout to move out.
Neteyam was another matter entirely.
Four weeks ago, Mo’at had instructed her that she was supposed to be taking it easy- an instruction her husband was all too eager and diligent in making happen…
He’d become increasingly overbearing and overprotective of her throughout her pregnancy. It seemed as if as her baby bump grew, so did his possessiveness.
He snapped at anyone who so much as breathed too much in her direction. It was probably worse than his clinginess back when she’d been rescued from Li’ona.
Suffice to say because of said behaviour, it was no surprise when he and the women of their family butted heads a few times.
Sal and Neytiri had to keep reminding him that pregnant women were tougher than they looked. He and D’avi also got into far too many bickering matches whenever he hovered and lingered during their “sisterly bonding dates”.
Kiri and Mo’at simply found Neteyam’s behaviour amusing- Xi was sure she’d never seen the grandmother so entertained before.
And when Xilä had finally met her twelve month mark- due date coming and going, there was no baby. She was a week overdue now and felt uncomfortably massive.
“Why doesn’t the baby want to come out,” she whined.
“You’ve made too good a home for your little one it seems,” Mo’at joked mildly as she ran her hands over the stretch of Xilä’s skin, fingers pressing down to feel the baby’s position. “We shall have to do some coaxing then, hm?”
“What kind of coaxing?” Neteyam asked quickly.
“Have her take a walk. She can try some char’mille tea, heavily spiced herb broth, perhaps a warm bath and sex.”
Xilä knew the list of suggestions, and yet even as the Tsahìk voiced the last one, her cheeks still tinged lightly. Her mate seemed unaffected though. He nodded seriously and asked his grandmother a couple other million questions- like he always did whenever they came in for a visit.
Is it normal that her boobs are already leaking milk?
When will they know for sure she’s in labor?
Do they need to wait until her waters break or until the contractions start before coming in?
How painful will the birth be for her?
Was there anything he could do to ease it?
Fingers interlocked and propped up on her bump, Xilä relaxed as best as possible while her husband went on and on with question after question.
Midway through their visit, he handed her a leaf wrapped snack that appeared from nowhere- some thinly sliced nectar coated meat placed between two sari cakes with mashed teylu and diced shrooms. Not the most appetizing thing to anyone else, but it was all she livid off of for the past week.
Xilä smiled at her husband’s attentiveness and dug in without needing to be told.
“And I know I’ve asked already, but are you sure there’s nothing else I can do for her during the birth?”
“Your role is to support her. The moment is all about her… and then all about her and the baby. She needs calm. You soothe and encourage her through it all. That’s it. If you can’t do that then you stay outside the birth room… Now, any other questions?”
“Yes. What-”
This boy! Mo’at huffed and shot Xilä a half amused, half frustrated expression. “Are you sure you want him to stay during the birth?”
“What do you mean? Of course I’m-”
“I’m not asking you, ‘Teyam… Xilä?”
“I wouldn’t want him anywhere else,” she smiled.
~
They’d tried almost everything.
But no amount of tea, or broth, or walks or baths did anything to nudge their little Sprout out of her.
She was too uncomfortable for sex, so only when nothing else on the list worked and she was just about at her wits end, did she finally decide to give lovemaking a go.
“You’ll have to do all the work. I’m not moving a muscle,” she groaned.
“We don’t have to do this, you know.”
Xilä could cry. “Well we’re going to have to! I want the baby out already, ‘Teyam! I’m so uncomfortable. My skin feels stretched to its limit, my boobs feel like they’re about to explode. And there are parts of me that hurt, that I didn’t even know could hurt like this! I don’t want to do this anymore. Please- just please do something! And why are you standing so fucking far away?!”
Shit! “Alright hey, hey. I’m here, baby.” He climbed into their hammock beside her, sensing a mental breakdown. “Sweetheart-”
“This is not sex,” she frowned when he cuddled her into his arms.
He tried not to smile. “Let’s take a breather first, yeah?”
She nodded and blew out a gush of air. “I’m sor-”
“Stop,” he whispered against her lips. “Just relax, sweetheart.”
He hummed the little tune he’d started singing to Sprout whenever he got too rowdy while his large palm soothingly ran over the curve of her belly. He prepared her with tiny kisses wherever he could reach from his position and sent silent prayers to Eywa to ease her discomfort.
“‘Teyam.”
“Xi.”
“I have to pee… again.”
He kissed her forehead. “Okay. Let’s go.”
After helping her to her feet, they probably only made it a couple steps before Xilä stopped with a gasp. A gush of liquid escaped her- it coated her inner thighs and rolled over her calves and ankles as it fell to the floor.
“Was that-”
“My waters broke,” she said, staring dumbstruck at the puddle at her feet.
~
The room was too crowded.
Neteyam was itching to throw them all out and with every passing second, every glance towards anyone who wasn’t his wife, his patience grew thinner.
They were nearing the fifth hour since Xilä’s waters broke. Her contractions were slowly growing more frequent now, and it was killing him every time he saw another wave of pain hit her.
Seated between his raised thighs, he felt her body tense up again. She moaned through gritted teeth and desperately squeezed his forearms while the pain consumed her for a couple seconds too long for him, before her shoulders slumped and head fell backwards as she panted.
“You’re doing so good,” he whispered against her temple.
She gave a shaky laugh in response.
“Do you want me to take over, ‘Teyam? You can go stretch your legs for a bit and-”
“No.” He winced at his tone and shot his mother-in-law an apologetic half smile. “Sorry. But no, I’m good, Sal. I’m not going anywhere.”
Five minutes later, his mother came and asked the same damn question.
Ten minutes after that, D’avi offered to sing Xilä a “calming song” she thought would help sooth her.
Neteyam knew it was their custom to have a “village” present for a birth… but this? This was too much.
Why couldn’t they wait outside with the men- as well as the shocking mass of clan members who’d shown up to give their support?
That damn song made him reach his limit.
The singing, combined with the not so soft chatter from Leati’ and Kah’lee seated in the corner of the tent, Sal and Neytiri’s bustling around the small private quarters Mo’at had set up for them as they made arrangements and Kiri and Mo’at’s ingredient tinkering- he’d had enough.
“Baby?”
“Yeah?”
“How mad at me would you be if I kicked them all out?”
Her head moved against his shoulder.
“What? Who?”
Even with sweat slicked hair and heated flushed cheeks, he thought she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.
“All of them? Except grandmother of course.”
Xi turned and took in the room’s activities. Her stifled anxiety quickened so she quickly glanced away again.
“You can say no.”
“Honestly? It’s crowded. I won’t be upset if you ask them to leave,” she admitted. “I love them all and I’m glad they’re here to support us… but it’s just…”
“Overwhelming right?”
She nodded, feeling a wave of guilt consume her.
Reading her all too well, he brushed her jaw with his thumb. “There’s nothing to feel bad- or be sorry about. They’ll understand.”
Xi internally debated asking D’avi to stay. But if she was being honest with herself, she wanted this moment to be between her and mate.
“Wait”- she stopped him before he could move- “do it nicely, okay? I don’t want any of them to think they’re a problem.”
He kissed her neck and promised to be nice about kicking out everyone before he got up.
Sal looked ready to put up a fight with him but with one glance at her daughter who Mo’at was helping through another contraction, she relented.
The women understood- thankfully.
Both mothers showered Xilä with kisses before they left and assured they’d be a call away and just in the next room giving up prayers of their own.
~
In the quiet dim space, Mo’at’s chats shifted in waves of highs and lows. Xilä’s wails however, overshadowed them.
“No more. No I can’t. I CAN’T do thi-” Xilä broke off into another cry that Neteyam helplessly tried to sooth.
“Xilä, breathe.” Mo’at patted her thigh and waved another round of spiced smoke from a lit herb bundle.
“‘Teyam,” she whimpered through never-ending tears, breathing heavily in pants she fought to control.
“I know sweetheart, I know.” He brushed away the stubborn strands of hair that kept getting stuck to her forehead. “You’re doing so good. Almost there, baby.”
Her chin wobbled and she licked her chapped lips.
“Tell me what to do for you. What can I do?” We wished he had the power to take away her pain.
“Tell me a story?”
He couldn’t help the breathy chuckle that escaped him. It had been a while since she’d asked for one of those. Lips to her temple, he tasted salt. “What kind, sweetheart?”
“I don’t know. Any? I just need to hear your voice. Please?”
“Okay, I got you,” he soothed. “I’ll tell you about the one that changed my life, yeah?”
Her head fell forward when another contraction rolled in- back arching away from him. Her fingers bit into the flesh of his thighs that bracketed her own. His palms ran over her sweat slick skin- shoulders, arms and the backs of her hands whilst soft cooed words fell from his lips.
Only when it was over and she sagged against him- fatigue dripping heavily with another plea for him to talk, did he start his story.
“It all started on what I thought was a random day of the worst year of my life. Nothing was going right and so much was weighing heavily on me. I decided I needed to get away for a couple day, so I went on a solo hunting trip to blow off some steam.”
He ducked to check on her. Her eyelids half closed while she stifled a whimper.
“I caught nothing though, couldn’t focus- I kept missing my shots. On my last day, after catching nothing again, I was just about to head back home when a woodspirit distracted me. And then I heard a sudden scream- a gut wrenching and skin chilling one at that. So I followed it and I found this odd little cloaked thing running from a nantang. They tried to climb a tree to escape, but they slipped, and fell.”
Xilä’s heart thudded in her eardrums… She knew this story.
“Anyway, after I took care of the beast, I approached the hooded and masked stranger. They blinked up at me for a second, with- with the most incredible eyes I’d ever seen, before they blacked out. And when I pulled the mask away”- he made an approving pleased sound- “the stranger? Prettiest thing I’d ever laid my eyes on.”
Mo’at’s chants grew quieter as she continued to waft smoke in Xi’s direction- it helped her calm somewhat.
“Anyway, I didn’t know it at the time, but I made the best decision of my life by taking her home with me… After an order from my dad, I had no choice but to spend time with this gorgeous creature every day, and you know what?”
Xi’s eyes closed. “What?”
“It was pure torture,” he whispered in her ear, making her snicker with a moaned wince.
“So then what happened?”
Neteyam bent and nuzzled her cheek, palm coming to rest on her stomach. “So, then I fell in love with her… and by some miracle she loved me right back.”
“And then?”
“And then I claimed her as mine, and she claimed me as hers… can you believe that? She became my mate. Mine.”
Xi peered up at him- pure love and adoration shining through her pain stricken face. “And then?”
He wiped the tear rolling down her cheekbone. “No… and now… and forever.”
“Xilä,” Mo’at called. “It’s time to push.”
“‘Teyam… can’t-”
“Shhh. Come on baby, what am I always telling you? Hm? You’re strong- you can do anything.”
“It hurts,” she whimpered.
“I’m sorry, baby. I’m sorry. Lean on me, sweetheart, I got you.”
~
Their baby came into the world with a hearty cry. Wails almost deafening but Neteyam laughed in glee- eyes prickling at the sight of the tiny wrinkly blue creature Mo’at placed on Xilä’s bare chest.
A boy. A son.
“Neteyam- oh ‘Teyam, look at him. He’s-” Xi grinned through her tears- pain forgotten, “he’s perfect.”
Neteyam couldn’t keep his eyes off of their little Sprout. “Holy shit.” He was here- their baby- their son.
Arms over Xi’s he gently cradled his baby’s head. “So much hair,” he marvelled.
“It’s dark like yours, handsome.” Xi couldn’t move her eyes away- too busy trying to absorb every single detail.
Index finger extended, Neteyam touched his son’s palm, and when his teeny tiny fingers closed over the digit, his heart melted.
Their son’s cries turned to whimpers as Xi soothed him and he looked almost annoyed as he blinked up at them through half opened eyes before they closed again.
“Hi precious, I’m your mama. Hi, aren’t you the sweetest.”
“I think he’s got your eyes, baby. I caught a flash of silver.”
Xi took a damp cloth from Mo’at and began to clean their son- removing away as much of the waxy type substance that coated his skin.
Mo’at eventually took over after ensuring Xi was taken care of. The elder handled their baby with expertise. He began to fuss while she checked him over- gums, tiny tail, pointed ears and queue.
The grandmother failed to hide her sniffle and misty eyes, voice soft in her whispered prayers to Eywa.
“He’s okay?” Neteyam was itching to have their baby back.
“Perfect. A healthy baby boy.” She handed the crying infant back to his mother and he instantly quieted. She gently cupped Xi’s cheek. “You were amazing, darling. Congratulations to you two.”
“Thank you, grandmother. For everything. Thank you.”
Little Sprout gave an unhappy coo, and like a natural, Xi arranged him in her arms and helped him find her nipple. It took a couple tries and whispered coaxing but the instant he latched, he was hungrily suckling.
Neteyam stared at the two of them, entranced and amazed- unaware when his grandmother snuck out to share the news with the rest of their family.
He kissed his wife’s temple, with whispered words of praise- telling her how proud he was of her. She met his lips with hers for a brief moment and with her own I love you’s.
After she shifted their baby to her other breast and he had his fill, she gently burped him, cooing a soft good job when he did.
“Ready to hold him, handsome?”
He nodded eagerly and shuffled out from behind Xilä, accepting hands comically larger in comparison to their infant.
Was it possible to love someone wholeheartedly after knowing them for less than an hour?
His mate was right, their son was perfect.
Nestled in the crook of his arms, their baby yawned, tiny fists clenched against his cheeks, knees drawn up against his tummy.
Neteyam’s heart could burst. Happiness consumed him.
“He looks just like you. Just like his daddy.”
The resemblance was startling, he thought. A mini him.
Xi peered at the second love of her life, head resting against her husband's bicep. “I don’t think any of the names we picked out suits him, and as much as I think it’s a cute nickname, I’m not calling our son Sprout.”
“You’re right… we’ll figure it out though.” He kissed the top of her head. “How are you feeling, sweetheart? Do you ache?”
She nodded, fingers gently touching her son’s tiny toes, they twitched and Xi thought she’d just about burst into tears. “Yes, but I can bear it. I can’t believe our baby’s here with us now. I’m so happy, ‘Teyam, I don’t know what to do with myself.”
“Me too.”
Sprout shifted and made a soft noise in his sleep before settling- tail giving a slight flick against Neteyam’s hand. He truly couldn’t take his eyes off of him.
“Our families’ are going to go crazy, they’re gonna love him. They’re probably going mad over waiting so long as well,” he joked.
“Let them wait,” Xi sighed, the pad of her thumb tracing a delicately soft cheek. “Let’s just be together a little longer, yeah?”
Neteyam smiled in agreement. “Whatever you want, sweetheart. Whatever you want.”
~
This chapter was soooo difficult to write & edit, I hope you all enjoyed it anyway!
First things first, yes, that was the last chapter- but WAIT. There will be a two-part epilogue. One- a slice of life after the birth of little Sprout and Two- a couple years after that.
PS. I still haven't settled 100% on a name for Sprout, so you can still send suggestions. Also, for girl names too (since they may or may not have another baby/babies in the epilogue).... (Who am I kidding, of course they will) LOL!
Okay, now cue the waterworks...
Thank you, THANK YOU to everyone of you who've followed me on this journey. Safe Haven is so special to me and I have enjoyed sharing it with you all.
Every read, every like, every comment, every suggestion and idea- just know I appreciate them all!
This community has been so welcoming and the response to a newbie writer like myself is profound.
As always, please share your thoughts :)

The Perfect Match
Roy Harper x Reader
Summary: A head cannon in which you are Roy’s perfect match.
Masterlist - Tip Jar
Tumblr media
Independence
Throughout Roy’s developmental years, he was always treated with excessive handholding, rules and over exertion of authority.
This has led Roy to feel resentful of constraints.
In his former years, Roy relished the freedom and exercising autonomy through the Outlaws.
Roy really appreciates the sense of freedom you give in your relationship.
Roy: “Would you be upset if I cancel our date tonight? Jason’s back in town.”
You were fully dressed up, ready for your hot date.
Y/n: “Nope.”
And you really meant it.
You took advantage of your hot fit and took yourself on a date.
The flexibility you give him is one of the key factors to your loving relationship.
Adventurous Spirit
Given Roy has spent most of his free time training and practicing the art of archery, Roy needs a romantic partner who shares the passion of adventure.
Roy: “Wow… I never seen anyone shoot the ground when the target is only 5 meters away.
Y/n: “I was just testing the bow resistance…”
Roy: “Uh-huh…”
Whilst you may not be the most talented archer or most fit individual. You are always keen to try and participate.
Your enthusiasm to do better is infectious and Roy just loves and appreciates your willingness to try and do better, especially when it comes to his interests.
Y/n: “Roy did you see, did you see?! I hit the outer ring!”
Supportive and Empathetic
Roy has had to endure many hardships throughout his developmental years which has plagued him every so often during his adult hood such as;
Addiction issues - not only does Roy have past entanglements with addictions which leads him to live a clean life. He had developed a critical eye for intentions, as a trusted friend was the cause to his addiction. Now, Roy analyses everything for deeper motivations. That’s just the result of the trauma and it’s a the reality in which you had accept. Whilst it can be insulting and exhausting to be under the microscope, you always speak your mind freely and bluntly.
Relationship dynamic of being in a team - it’s a struggle for Roy to build trust in others due to his past experiences. He has trouble letting people in, but once your in, you most certainly not getting out. You appreciate the value in which Roy holds you and makes you feel extra safe and comfortable knowing that Roy, no matter what, will always be there for you.
Responsibility as a hero - Roy has had to endure the heavy burden of protecting society as nothing more than a well trained human. Society is never short of criticism and Roy is hard on himself enough as it is. This can lead to feeling emotionally and physically strained. Roy cannot handle the criticism of his short comings when it comes to his romantic entanglements too.
Roy: “Y/n, baby, I’m so sorry I missed your birthday party, it’s just, this woman, and her child-“
Y/n: “Roy! I had the best birthday ever! I took lots of photos, so you could see it all when you finished your patrol. But we can do that later, do you want me to draw you a bath? Have you eaten yet?”
Roy: *pant* “aren’t you-“ *pant* “upset with me?”
Y/n: “Don’t be a silly goose, I know you wouldn’t miss anything intentionally, must’ve been really important. We’ve been together for years, think I don’t know you by now?”
Sense of Humor
Even in the hardest of times, it’s at times easier to just have a laugh.
Roy appreciates that you don’t take difficult situations to seriously and just have a laugh with him.
Roy thinks your extra-adorable since you kept notes on his funniest one-liners.
"Some days, I wish I was a firefighter. All you have to worry about is fire."
"We're supposed to be professionals, yet here we are, running around in spandex, talking to ourselves."
"All these costume changes, and I'm still trying to figure out my life."
In a crowd full of hero’s your laughter amongst the dead silence is always appreciated.

I think this article is relevant to a lot of the very stupid, wanky debate that I keep seeing going around my dash about TEENS SELF-DIAGNOSING WITH DID. It is a funny quirky article written by a literary fiction author about how one of her characters got into her head during the pandemic and started dispensing Wry Life Advice, disappearing as soon as the stressful situation ended.
there's this bit that I think @pervocracy wrote, about how if your culture only had two words for 'fear', and one of them was "mild nervousness about passing a test" and the other was "the bone-chilling horror of being chased by zombies in a graveyard", that keeps you from talking about a whole range of human experiences. if you have crippling social anxiety, or you have an uncommon phobia, or any kind of fear that isn't 'mild nerves' or 'IMPENDING PHYSICAL DOOM'? you're stuck choosing between two words that do not suit your experience to describe what's going on.
I think "the experience of having an entity in your head that is Not You" is actually remarkably common- way more than 1%- especially among writers/artists/actors/fandom folks, and especially among anyone who's going through a severe physical or mental stress. an entity like this can exist in varying degrees of independence-from-you and interest-in-the-outside-world. Sometimes this entity is a comforting presence, other times it's a malevolent one. some disappear as quickly as they appear, and others stick with you for your whole life.
A lot of historical cultures had a framework to explain this kind of thing. "This is your daemon." "This is your guardian angel." "You're hearing spirits; you're possessed." Mainstream Western culture rejected these explanations, and in some cases, rightfully fucking so. But we don't really have a framework to replace them.
So if you are experiencing this phenomenon, because of how our society has decided to handle it, you really only have two words for it- "imaginary friend", or "DID alter". in the vast majority of cases neither of these words are appropriate, in the same way that severe social anxiety isn't Test Jitters or IMMINENT FEAR OF YOUR LIFE.*
there is a wide range of human experiences here being collapsed into 2 points. but people who are having that experience are going to need the words to describe it. if you're a published litfic author and the experience is over, you can write an article about it and just come off as a Little Quirky. if you're a teenager on TikTok, the experience is ongoing, and the only word you're being offered is DID? you're gonna take that word.
we need more words for this range of experiences. we need more people to be able to talk about this range of experiences- including DID, which is a very different experience from Brain Octopus up there- without getting tarred as Bad Psycho Crazy. we need to stop arguing whether or not you can only have this state of being from Severe Enough Trauma; we need to be able to accept it as a natural part of how humans are without judgement or shame.
*(Not saying that having alters is the same thing as ZOMBIES IN A GRAVEYARD; it's the Wide Range Of Intensity And Experiences that I'm comparing.)

Heat Tank
Johnny Storm x ghost!reader from the Phantom Pleasure series
One of my Valentine's Fics for 2024. Prompt: A kiss in relief. WC 782
Tumblr media
Summary: Though you've grown closer, Johnny has spent months unable to touch you. As a spirit, you are attracted to heat, so there's a chance his energy can actually offer you a form--if only temporarily--for him to see and feel. This is Johnny's first chance to test the Heat Tank.
Tumblr media
The science of the structure makes no sense to Johnny, but he knows he has permission to go supernova while inside. The venting and dispersion will work for a prolonged period, and as an unexpected bonus, Richards was able to channel the energy to heat the entire block.
Johnny doesn’t care about that.
Why he needs the Tank is vague, but the Four know Johnny rarely asks for technology unless absolutely necessary. If it can help prevent any direct damage to the brownstone or the neighborhood, Reed and Sue are on board.
The apparatus is simply a more powerful version of the original assessment chamber in the Baxter Building, less the flaw where his maximum temp can melt the walls.
Johnny does the song and dance, listens to the explanation of controls—door stays locked until a specific sensor reads below 110* F—and then dismisses Reed and his sister to go out to dinner or whatever it is they do. He doesn’t pay attention after the necessities.
He contemplates inviting you in verbally, but instead lights his hand. That’s your ghost-equivalent of an attractive offer: concentrated heat. If this works at all…
As soon as the thick door shuts, its pitch black save for his hand, and Johnny stokes the fire. He gets more and more nervous, letting the smooth, gradual increase boil atmosphere like a frog in the pot, until the first shapes of you lick through the distortion.
You’re here.
You’re really here—right there within reach—and he pushes for more, more heat, more pressure, more you.
There’s not one whole part of you that becomes clear first; it’s wisps of a hip, a curve of a jaw, leg. He simply watches intently, unable to hear over the roar of flame around him—around you both.
But he can hear your voice in his head so clearly, joking, poking fun at his needless intensity, his perpetual impatience.
Johnny…
I’m always here.
I’m not going anywhere.
You aren’t though. He wants more. For once in his constantly un-alone life, he wants just one thing: to see you, to be with you physically.
Then you’re there.
Suddenly, the nuance of oranges curve over every inch of you, and Johnny’s body feels hotter than it’s ever been, in pain or pleasure, in fear or safety. He’s on fire inside and out.
He hardly imagines what your skin will be like in his palm because the burnt clay undertone of it seems hard. If Johnny’s learned anything about you, “hard” would describe none of it. You’re malleable like amber and fragile as rust.
The shared presence of blood-red is the most you and Johnny have ever had in common to date, and yet he feels a connection in the destruction, the dispersion of his life-force. If only he could truly give himself to you…
His bare foot steps forward in a cloud of plasma and smoke, sliding through the blaze.
He is the only source of oxygen now. There is nothing but Johnny to galvanize life within the Tank, and he has a goal.
Touch her.
That’s all he has to do: suffer and incite thousands of degrees for a corporeal taste.
Just one. Just one touch. Just touch her.
But Johnny Storm has never settled for the bare minimum. He steals the whole show. He shoots all the way to the stars. He can’t be held back, and there’s no one who cares to hold him back.
Before he can close the distance between you, your arm raises, a palpable hand resting on his chest which he greedily covers with his own and continues. Onward to you. Nearer. Hotter. Sooner. Until he arrives, lips kissing the beautiful, pouting plume of your lips.
To his utter delight, you feel…cool like fog rolling over his molten skin, and his lungs fill with the contradiction, veins opened wide to the shock of dopamine injected by new.
Johnny’s power makes him impose on others—on the world—because he controls the climate around him. Climate never fights back.
You do. You can affect him, and he’s instantly addicted.
He’ll fuse straight to your soul if you let him. He’s that far gone in seconds. The chain reaction simply floods through him, and he pumps more and more heat out to keep you tangible.
He’ll die without friction. He can’t imagine living without.
He presses, smelting your essence into his memory and hoping.
Stay, he thinks. Stay even when I burn out.
The hand on his heart squeezes, a cool rock to rest his sweating skin upon.
You’re a balance. You can keep him grounded even after all the hot air of this life floats away.
Tumblr media
A/N: well, I'm really praying that read as interesting rather than confusing because I've had to come up with odd ways to describe how Johnny and a ghost can interact. Had this idea for Reader to be attracted to heat (i.e. her consciousness gathers around that energy which is the only time she can kinda really *think*) for a while, and it struck me that it would be novel to have a cold kiss be more tantalizing for the Human Torch. Anyway, I overthink everything, so yep, all is fine here!

Jungkook: By chance(short 1)
Tumblr media
In which Jungkook gets to know his soulmate and can't help but fall deeper and deeper in love.
Tags/Warnings: Soulmate AU, Idol!Jungkook, slight angst, major fluff, no one asked but I still deliver, Jungkook having impure thoughts oops
Length: short/mid
Belongs to: By Chance
■▪︎━━━━━━━━━••◇••━━━━━━━━━━━▪︎■
"Did you order this much?" He laughs to himself as he brings in all the takeout boxes. You jump up to help, nodding eagerly, your phone now discarded on his couch. You've visited him after he'd asked if you wanted to spend some time with him- get to know him, seeing as you're soulmates.
"I haven't eaten all day - and honestly, I paid for it, so who cares! Those cinnamon bites will still taste good tomorrow morning for breakfast. And before you ask, I do plan on taking this stuff home with me if we don't finish it." You shrug, bringing the other boxes Jungkook couldn't hold into the living room.
"How much do I owe you?" He asks, already taking his phone out, and you just lick your finger after having opened some boxes to look what's what, shaking your head.
"Your honest opinion on the chicken, really. I've never ordered those, but they do look very hot right now, not gonna lie." You say, sitting down before stretching your legs. Your shorts reveal a tattoo on your leg that seems to travel high up- he's spotted a glimpse of something up to your rib when your stretched earlier, rising fabric of your shirt having also revealed a sparkling butterfly hanging from a silver piercing decorating your belly button. It makes him wonder how much more you hide away from his eyes, what might be there to discover for him.
You seem to be such a free spirit- an uncaged bird, open, colorful, exciting. You're infectious too, your bubbly nature easily making him feel all happy and relaxed. And he swears that's not just his soulmate bond speaking. He truly believes he would've at least developed a crush on you no matter the circumstances, really. You're cute, a little wild, testing him as if to see if he's able to tame you. You're exactly his type, not just physically.
Your beauty is simply a bonus- a pretty soul safely tucked into an equally pretty body.
"I love them, even if they're a little greasy. I've got a horrible love for fried foods." He laughs, sitting down to eat across from you.
"Would've never guessed." You smile. "Not to insult you, really. But I always thought every Idol, you know, is obsessed with dieting and staying away from anything that could have more calories than a carrot." You say, before holding a hand towards your mouth, eyes wide. "Oh my God, that sounded so rude, fuck!" You shake your head. "Now I cursed, I'm sorry, fuck- I mean not fuck, shit- I mean-" you whine to yourself putting your face in your hands while Jungkook laughs across from you.
"You're fine, really, it's okay." He reassures. "I'm not that sensitive, and honestly, a lot of idols do be like that." He shrugs.
"Maybe? I mean, I probably shouldn't even bring that topic up. I don't wanna be nosy." You say quietly, stealing a piece of chicken from him before you freeze in your motions. "Oh God I should've asked- why am I like this?!" You scold yourself, and he smiles brightly towards you.
"You're cute, nothing wrong with it." He flirts.
You look at him a little playfully suspicious before you continue eating. "If you're aiming at getting into my pants, I might have to disappoint you, mister." You say, and his eyes widen while he stops chewing for a second. "In front of you sits a very awkward virgin that's not even sure if she even likes sex, or kissing, or anything of that nature really. I'm just putting it out there, lay my cards on the table, I guess." You shrug before taking a sip of your soda.
"May I ask why?" He wonders respectfully, wiping his fingers on a napkin close by. "I'll respect your decision, obviously. I'm just curious, I guess." He clarifies, and you shrug.
"You've got every right to be." You nod, licking your lips. "I guess every guy has always been so.. pushy with it to the point where I didn't want to do it simply just to spite them." You explain, not looking at him. "Wanted to see how they'd react if I said that I didn't want to. You know, neither kiss nor have sex. Like a test, to see if they're any good." You tell him, and he nods.
"And none ever passed the test?" He asks, making you shrug as you look at him now.
"I mean, there's one who's on a pretty good road of maybe being the first to do just that." You say, and he smiles charmingly, fingers playing with his lip ring for a second before he turns serious again.
"All jokes aside, I really am okay with that." He says. "I didn't invite you here to fuck you, nor do I ever plan on doing that. Putting up a facade to tangle you into something, I mean. I'd fuck you if you'd want me to, just to be clear here." He tells you, reaching over to steal a few sips of your drink.
"Well, you stole an indirect kiss now, so that gonna be some points added to your fuckboy-ness." You say, crossing your arms- unaware probably that he now gets a very attractive sight of your cleavage now.
"We can easily make it a direct one too, if you want." He flirts again, and you stay quiet for a second, almost making him apologize- until you actually speak again, softly.
"I mean, I wouldn't mind.." you mumble.
"You don't have to push yourself." He tells you calmly. "I'm sorry if it felt like I was trying to convince you. I'm only joking around."
"No-" you start, looking everywhere but him. "-I, don't know, I actually do wanna try it with you. See if I like it." You say. "But, you know, only if you're up for it too."
"I'd be dumb to say no to kissing a pretty girl like you." He shrugs with a boyish smile before he gets up from the floor and squats down in front of you, his hands on your knees as you're still sitting on his couch. He chuckles at your shyness a bit before he slowly leans upwards, making sure to check until the very last second for any signs of you becoming uncomfortable. But that moment never comes, and when his lips make contact with yours for a short peck, your hands find his to hold onto, making him smile into the kiss before he parts from you. "Good? You're free to say if it wasn't, I'm really cool with that." He says, and you nod.
"Never really knew what to expect from a kiss, really." You shrug. "But it's nice. I liked it." You nod.
"Wait that was your first kiss?!" He now asks, and you nod.
"Wasn't that obvious? I thought I made it obvious." You laugh, and he laughs as well.
"I mean, I understood the virgin part, but I thought, you know, a pretty girl like you would've at least been kissed before." He says, and you playfully hit his chest, making him fall dramatically on his butt.
"Oh come on now prince charming, go eat your greasy chicken." You tease, making him grin.
Yeah- he really believes he's gonna fall for you. Maybe he already has.
Either way- he doesn't mind one bit.

Human sciens is simply fuck around and find out
So when the humans give a tour of the labs so alliance members see what the crazed apes are up to, suddenly BOOM the halls shake and lights flicker but the tour group is fine while the one giving the tour says something like "Ah thats the sound of progress" all while there's people rushing by with guns and extinguishers yelling about a code Red and subject escape
[22/09/23] Nice, that is a fun trope to work with. I think I'll leave the dinosaur crew be, and have some other questionable research station make a debut with an "accident". [23/09/23] Idea pops in my head after several rejections - Human-alien hybrids (because you can't cross-breed because that's not how biology works, but Humans are still curious, because of course we are) [24/09/23] Actually, no, I don't like that: 1st - fairly common as is; 2nd - doesn't feel right with the Humanity I'm writing out. No, I think a better avenue is, since Earth in this verse is gonna collapse in on itself in under a century, experiments towards terraforming methods, since that's a requirement and thus a literal blank check for any- and everything. Yes. (mad scientist voice) Yeessss, I can see it taking shape! [25/09/23] It took some kind of shape indeed.

Biology is the most diverse and complicated field of research with literally no end in sight. We will eventually discover every law of physics, and, yes, chemistry also has the potential for limitless combinations, only in biology can you find and create circumstances where trillions of different organisms co-exist and co-operate, compete, and can create a stable and self sustaining system. Not to mention mutation and evolution across generations, as well as the myriad of changes and adaptations a single organism can undergo in its singular lifespan. The potential is truly beyond the bounds of imagination.
Since biology is an omnipresent field in every civilization, it is only natural that it didn't take long before a Human led joint Coalition Flora research station was established - the Efflorescent Sneezewort Yarrow.
It is also natural that not long after that the non-Human staff sent this panicked message:
The Humans are insane! First, there is no regulation for anything beyond decontamination, which would be fine, if - IF - they didn't sometimes just bring the test materials out with them anyway for, and I quote: "Let it experience the outside world" or "Introduce it to my other plant buddies." The head researcher, instead of reprimanding this clearly dangerous behavior, just lets it happen. As a matter of fact, he almost exclusively and constantly ingests a plant-based gaseous substance through a device he calls a "bong" and locks himself for days on end within a random lab and, as he put it while looking at the ceiling: "Feel out the connections. We're all part of one whole, and only by becoming one with the roots of the soul can you truly attain the understanding of the spirit, and unlock the true calling of each sapling." As I draft this emergency message, there is a shuttle going through decontamination with two squads, one is an extreme disaster containment unit, the other a full on military special forces unit. With heavy duty weaponry. The worst is what they had to say: "Yeah, sometimes one of these nutcases gets the idea to combine plants with animal genes, and, to be fair, with access to the whole Coalition database and samples, I get it. There's a lot of really weird and cool creatures out there on each planet, makes most people at least think about playing scientist. Anyway, it's gonna be fine, the code said it was just a Mini HoH, so we'll be done in under an hour and you can all go back to doing your thing. I just hope we don't have to burn the thing this time, the prof said it's something like a dandelion and a small rainforest actual almost-lion from one of the real far out planets, but it's got bunny ears and the nose of a German shepherd, sorta. I think that's kinda neat." By the way, HoH stands for, and I am not making this up and the translator did get it right - House of Horrors. They claim it is just an homage to a piece of old Human culture. I don't believe them. I refuse to be a part of this madhouse for any longer than I must. Send a vessel and return me to a normal laboratory setting. I will now incubate myself in a cryo-pod to prevent any more exposure to these "scientists". Thaw me out in clean garbs and with two interns already doing real work on new medicines.

At Last
Wednesday x Kitsune!reader
"Ma, I'll be fine."
"You've never traveled this far with your flames before, my kit. I'm just worried."
The bag on your shoulder slipped as your mother fussed over you. Within the two months of your impromptu vacation from school, you already visited Enid and Yoko. Now that the new semester is nearing, it was decided that you would stay with Wednesday and the rest of the Addams brood before going back to Nevermore together.
Together. That word made your heart flutter like a leaf in the wind. But it made you anxious as well. While you both stayed in touch, there wasn't much of an indication of a forward path in your relationship. Sure, this was probably Wednesday's first real relationship so you tried to chalk it up to taking things slow but it still made you unsure. It was hard enough to convey emotion through text. To add in an emotionally stunted person made things near impossible. But you're trying. Maybe things will change once you're within the same space.
Your phone rings, finally making your mom stop her fussing. With a silent thanks, you answer, already knowing who it was.
"My dark spirit! I'm ready if you are." Silence greets you. Long enough that you're slightly concerned. "Wednesday?"
"Yes, we're ready for you, m-mia volpe." There's a sudden burst of muttering through the phone. The only thing you can really catch were Wednesday's threats of death to whoever it was. Eventually, her voice turns back towards you. "We are ready. My family insisted on greeting you as well, so be prepared."
"You got it. I'll see you in a bit."
With the call ended, you take a hold of your luggage and wait for the familiar pull. While you never traveled this far, you and Wednesday tested the spiritual attraction whenever you could. Even when you were in California with Enid, it seemed to work from across the country. Maybe you'll test a cross-country travel one day.
It doesn't take long before you feel the pull in your heart. You turn to look in the direction with a soft smile which draws the attention of your mother.
"You care for this one, don't you?" You respond with a nod.
"I do. I don't know where it'll go, but... I'll follow as far as I'm allowed."
You turn to face your mother and give her a hug. She pulls you close, petting your head gently.
"Take care, my kit. I love you."
"Love you too, Ma." With a smile, you back away to give your flames some space. "I'll talk to you later."
Your eyes close as your body turns to face your heart's direction. Making sure you have a tight hold on your suitcase, you leap into the air and surround yourself with your foxfire. In a whirl, you shoot forward towards your destination.
-----+++++-----
Wednesday keeps her eyes trained on the sky as she waits for any sign of your arrival. The both of you weren't sure how long it would take. She tried to tell that to the rest of her family, but alas they stood just behind her, watching as well.
The wait gave Wednesday some time to think. Time to think about you and your relationship. This was an entirely new concept for her. The physical aspect of the relationship was easy, even if it was a while since you've touched. That was just a response to stimuli. The emotional aspect was the troubling part. These new feelings made her nauseous and self conscious. Watching her parents made her think about you, even if it still grossed her out. She missed your presence and when she saw pictures of you, Enid and Yoko, she was jealous.
But she used this time away from you to filter through her feelings. She even talked to Thing about it when it bothered her to that extent. Her mother tried to pry, but Wednesday shot that down almost immediately. This wasn't something she wanted to talk about with someone whose opinions are skewed to those positive feelings. She needed to think about things logically.
Her traitorous heart, however, leaps when she sees the flicker of flames in the distance. Her feet move on their own as you soar closer. The eyes of her family burn at her back, but she doesn't seem to care. You were almost here.
The fireball lands and whirls for a moment before revealing your form, tails waving the flames away as it dissipates. After patting yourself and making sure there weren't anymore embers, you look up to see Wednesday.
It's quiet as you stare at each other. The Addams brood wait with bated breath as the two of you walk towards each other. When you are face to face, you just bask in each other's presence. Afraid to break whatever spell residing in the space, you can only whisper a soft, "Hi." Wednesday doesn't reply in kind. Her stare, as always, comforts you.
Eventually, the goth steps closer and just leans against you. Your hands move up to gently caress her arms. Not quite hugging, but close enough to satisfy that urge. You take a breath, letting Wednesday's scent fill your senses. You both didn't part until you let yourself gently nuzzle against Wednesday's cheek.
"Guess I should meet the family. Been letting them wait long enough." You look over at the rest of the Addams and see them near bursting with excitement. A stark contrast to Wednesday herself.
"I suppose," she responds. "The sooner we do this, the sooner I can get you alone."
A pleasant shiver runs up your spine as you follow the pigtailed goth. It seems you really didn't need to worry about your relationship. Wednesday seemed to miss you as much as you missed her.
As soon as you are in front of him, Wednesday's father, Gomez, grabs your hand in a brief shake before pulling you into a massive hug.
"It's so wonderful to meet you, Y/N! Welcome to our humble abode!" You just let your gaze travel to the massive manor over Gomez's shoulder. 'Humble, huh?'
When he releases you, you move towards the matriarch, Morticia. When she reaches her hand out, you take it and lay a soft kiss on it. She lets a soft smile grace her beautiful features, her eyes glancing at Wednesday knowingly.
"My, my. What manners." She takes your face in her hands and gives you a couple of air kisses.
Next is Pugsley, Wednesday's brother. When you shake his hand, he immediately asks whether you would help him with some experiments. Wednesday just gives a tiny shrug when you look at her for guidance.
"Uh, if I have the time, sure." The young Addams smiles wide in response, reminding you of Eugene.
The towering butler then walks up and grabs your belongings with a low groan.
"This is Lurch," Gomez says, introducing the large man. "He'll take your things while we give you a tour of the house." Wednesday steps in at those words.
"Father, the tour can wait. I'm sure Y/N is tired from their trip." She gives you a meaningful gaze. You nod in response and offer a regretful smile.
"It did take more outta me than I thought." You rub the back of her head, a little embarrassed at the attention. "I would like a moment to chill, if that's all right."
"Of course, my dear," Morticia responds. "We have plenty of time for you to see the house." She pats your head and gestures to Wednesday. "Now go. I'm sure you two would like to catch up."
You weren't sure if you saw a knowing glint in her eyes, but regardless, the implication makes you blush. To save you from further embarrassment, Wednesday takes your arm and leads you to her room.
As soon as the door to her room closes, Wednesday is on you. She pulls you close, hands finding their place on your cheeks. When your foreheads touch, you close your eyes, letting yourself feel Wednesday near you. Again, with a crooked smile, you let out a quiet "hi" before feeling her lips on yours.
Spirits, you missed this. The way Wednesday's body melts into yours. The way your hands found their home on her waist. The way you move in sync with each other despite this being only the second time you've done this.
+______________+Tag List+______________+
She's practically pinned you against the door and you've no intention of breaking free.
When air calls for you both, you part but still within the same breath. Your nose brushes against hers gently, your smile dopey and lopsided.
"This time without you had been torture," Wednesday whispers. "How you've come to claim my entire being has confounded me."
"Well," you begin. "It's not like you haven't affected me. You already have a hold on my heart and I didn't even realize until you were dying."
You two take another breath before Wednesday pushes away with a soft groan.
"We're beginning to sound like my parents. It's disgusting."
You let out a laugh before letting yourself take in Wednesday's room. Before you really could, something plops on your head and gives your hair a ruffle. Almost immediately, you know who it is.
"Thing! My main hand." You give him a fist bump before catching up. His excited signing recounting story after story. Wednesday looks on with fondness. You've already become a major part of her life and she looks forward to seeing what the future brings for you.

━。゜✿ jily fic recommendations ✿ ゜。━
Another one because I'm on summer break and spend my days reading about how it's them in every universe. Like the last one, this post is for AU fic recs but I made this post for fics set in the canon universe.
For reference, anything in italics is taken from the summaries on ao3.
Tumblr media
At The Beginning by @inthe-afterglows
Historical AU in which "Lily's life is changed forever when she takes a morning stroll through the woods and ends up in 1745 - two hundred years in the past."
Or an Outlander / Anastasia AU
Love, love love! Do yourself a favour and listen to Timeless when reading this. I can not express with words how much I loved this one
Faint Hearts and Fair Ladies by @thejilyship
Historical AU where "Sir Lupin heroically gets the royal family out of a castle under siege. Now the three royals and their knight find themselves running for their lives through the forest. James and Lily's tenuous relationship will be tested, as secrets come out and emotions run high."
Or a Robin Hood AU in which they strive to do better
It's got a well-rounded plot and great world-building with incredible characterisations. The interpersonal communication between James and Lily does a great job of acknowledging how James, while being physically present was emotionally absent. The author explores his grief and makes it a point to note that while it explains his behaviour, it doesn’t excuse it. Despite this, through it all, I was rooting for them. Also, the relationship between the Black brothers was so well written. All of the side characters felt valuable to the story and were dynamic. Overall a really good read! Shout out to big brother Harry and baby Gracie ❤︎ ❤︎ ❤︎
Fighting the Odds also by @/thejilyship
Hunger Games AU
In which Moody as Haymitch Abernathy is the greatest casting of all time.
certain sharp things by @thequibblah
Historical AU in which "all the other customary marks on James’s body have been made either aboard his ship, his fear abated by cheap spirits, or in foreign ports. But this, they all said, this, his promotion to captain, this deserves ink from the Portsmouth tattooist’s hand."
Or a tattoo shop AU but make it Regency
holy the air, the water, and the fire; also by @/thequibblah
Avatar AU set against a regency backdrop.
Emphasis on the tag "Big-time Matchmaker Euphemia Potter"
An Alliance with an Earl by fluffernutter8 (on ao3)
Regency AU. "Years after she initially rejected his proposal, Lily Evans finds herself in a situation where James Potter, Earl of Gryffindor, can be of help."
In which Frank Longbottom, accidental matchmaker, is grateful for his very nice bottle of brandy
AO3 is Down by @annabtg
AO3 Status: Delayed emails have been sent out and the Archive is back! Thank you so much to our sysadmin james_ for interrupting his sleep to work on and monitor the situation.
Inspired by this very real Tweet, an alternate universe where the sysadmin is James Potter, and Lily Evans is his supervisor who had to drag him out of bed so he could resolve the problem.
The fact that this came on my dash when archive last crashed -
Golden Love by GwenMontrose (on ao3)
Olympics AU. "Paris 2024. Lily Evans, English tennis star, is ready to face the highest challenge of her career and finally fulfil the dream of winning a gold medal at her first Olympics. Now, if only a certain handsome swimmer wasn't set on wreaking havoc in her life, everything would be very much smoother..."
all the time in the world by @eemolu
Uni AU. "Three seconds. That was how long Lily let herself consider the thought of it, before she pushed it away and forced herself to think of something, anything else. One, there was his mouth, obviously, his lips and how they were slightly chapped and definitely capable of driving her mad by the words that came out of them so she could only imagine what else they could do. Two, his shoulders were broad and he insisted on wearing those stupid threadbare T-shirts so she could see the planes of his chest move beneath them when he laughed or stretched or did anything at all, because apparently she was dealing with some kind of Greek marble statue. Three, his hands, and there was no justification she could give to herself for why they transfixed her that couldn’t be seen with one look at them. And that was three, and she was done."
To quote the notes "james potter is hot and I am looking respectfully."
can you play me a melody by @/ eemoul
Modern (band) AU. James sat in the backseat and tried not to stare. This girl was beautiful. The red hair, the green eyes she’d narrowed at him in the rearview mirror. Not to mention the music she was playing, old folk songs he hadn’t heard since he was a child, and louder than he was used to. People usually turned it down so they could talk about James, and who they knew who loved him, and how he should be living his life better. This girl simply drove, and was beautiful.
I'll be cleaning up bottles with you by k_tron (on ao3)
Muggle modern AU where getting drunk at a new years eve party leads to voicing repressed emotions
fainting for you by dhpanya10 (on ao3)
Modern muggle AU. A meet-ugly in which “you just fainted right in front of me please you need to drink more in this heatwave, and oh wow, it turns out you’re also unfairly pretty/handsome when you aren’t passing out on me”
Namecheck for a Bet by MyThirdGuess (on ao3)
‘So, I know that there are many fans out there wondering, and speculating, where the name of my album came from. I feel like I owe them an explanation, especially considering it just won an award.
‘Gryffindor was the name of my house at the boarding school I attended, and I lost a bet when I was sixteen that if I ever released an album, I would show true house pride and name it after Gryffindor.
‘If you think that’s good, just wait. I lost another bet a year later that I would namecheck four people if I ever won an award. So, James, Sirius, Remus, Peter… this is your namecheck.’
barry, bond, and the blues by @oyprongs
"He and his friends beeline for the rock section, which is strategically placed up front, directly in her eye line. She gets a closer look at him, this way. Messy hair, a strand or two curling behind his specs. The lean shoulders of a boy still in the midst of filling out his frame. Long fingers flicking through the bin of records, the light snick sound filtering through the hum of the fan blowing by her ear."
As someone currently on summer holidays, the vibes in this are immaculate. I recommend listening to Jackie and Wilson while reading this.
Polaroid Muse by DeepWatersWaiting (on ao3)
Modern AU. "At a party with Sirius' art friends, James finds himself unexpectedly becoming the subject of someone's polaroid camera."
Because english literature student james potter is everything
Accidental Reindeer by AidanChase (on ao3)
Lily's holiday plans are cancelled, but luckily -- or unluckily -- her least favourite coursemate from university has invited her to his parent's home in the countryside. He just neglected to mention is parents' grand Christmas gala is actually an ugly jumper party.
Just Pretend by sunshinemarauder (on ao3)
Fame AU. In "Five times actors Lily Evans and James Potter kissed for the cameras, and one time it was unmistakably on purpose."
Andrew Garfield Would Never by Yerawizardbec (on ao3)
“Actually, that's where you're wrong McKinnon, from my extensive field research into the male species, I have concluded that Andrew Garfield would never treat you that badly,” Hestia declared, semi-seriously.
“Oh my god, you're so right, Andrew Garfield would never,”
3 Godrics Row also by @/ Yerawizardbec
Legal AU, written by an actual solicitor - Lily Evans was described by the Legal 500 as 'a breath of fresh air’ and ‘the future of the family bar’ but that didn't matter as she stumbled through the front doors of the Court, 30 minutes later than she had anticipated to. After a stressful, horrendous day, Lily finds herself in a bar with a handsome stranger; she hadn't planned on ever seeing him again, but then he pops up in the last place she ever expected to see him, and she can't help but admit, she might just be falling for James Potter, but does she know who he really is?
PHENOMENAL. I am in desperate need of more jily legal AUs so if anyone has any recs, please share
Two Blind Dates by @moonawrites
Lily has had her fair share of good dates, bad dates, dead boring and dead-end dates. But she has never, in all her life, been on a date and had him say, “This might sound insane, but I think you’re my best mate’s soulmate.”
A Happy Accident by @chierafied
James could never have imagined what a little slip of a tongue during a TV show interview might lead to...
The Wedding Ring by @mppmaraudergirl
What is undeniably worse than attending your sister's wedding looking as desolate and forgotten as a wilted houseplant?
Drunkenly ringing your ex-boyfriend and asking him to be your date.
Or a fake-dating AU in which Petunia is Bridezilla
A classic idiots in love
Mixed Impressions (requires an ao3 account) by @charmingwillow
Modern AU. The first time James Potter met Lily Evans he decked her with a day old, soggy waffle. Things don't go well from there... until they do.
TW: grieving parents
Don't ask me how this works but it's like a slice-of-life but with angst (the ambivalence I know).

Lethal Woman: Chapter 8 (Astarion x GN! Reader)
Synopsis: You and Astarion have many misadventures while going back through the Blighted Village. Someone from your past makes a gruesome reappearance and reveals they are hunting Astarion. You and Astarion inadvertently confess to each other that there is, in fact, something between the two of you.
CW: Violence, gore, fighting, alcohol, Gnome racism (I don’t hate Gnomes I promise- just Dwarves because the All Hammer killed one of my favorite DND characters), torture, mentions of emotional, psychological, and physical abuse.
Chapter 9
Tumblr media
Likes, comments, and reblogs are greatly appreciated! Thank you for everyone who has been reading my little passion project!
Tracing your steps back through the blighted village was more eventful than any of you anticipated.
For one- you and Astarion stumbled upon an Ogre and Bug Bear couple (literally) bumping uglies. Astarion had insisted that he open it and you were really hoping it wasn’t what you thought it was. Considering your luck- you weren’t surprised they were fucking, but then they tried to kill you. So you had to ruin the party while the rest of your companions explored the other abandoned buildings while you and Astarion were trying to avoid being covered in various bodily fluids.
Second, Karlach informs you she befriended three massive ogres and they said they’ll send their aid when you “toot this little horn thing”. Then she gave you the news that they don’t promise NOT to eat you. You quickly convinced her to give it to you- you love your tiefling kindred spirit, but her impulse control is terrible sometimes.
Arguably the third incident may be the worst. Karlach had rejoined the other group when Wyll called her over so it was just the two of you again. You had attempted to help a deep Gnome by killing the Goblins that were terrorizing him- much to Astarion’s dismay.
Well, when the Gnome told you to stop the damn thing- you went inside thinking it would be one lever. It was TWO and they said what they each did IN COMMON. YOU CAN’T READ COMMON! And when you asked Astarion to pull the right lever- he had a mischievous look in his eyes.
“Consider the right level pulled, Darling.”
Needless to say, the only positive of that event was the hysterical cackling that erupted from your lover’s mouth as he fell to the ground- unable to contain himself until at least 10 minutes after the Gnome you promised to rescue became airborne and gained his Gnomeish wings. You had looked at Astarion and leered at him playfully.
“You are so mean,” you said while castigating him, trying not to let your love of his genuine laughter get in the way of basic morals, “that is not what I asked you to do at all!”
You are so glad no one else was around for that. Wyll would have stroked out.
“Oh Darling,” he said, wiping the tears from his eyes, “I never claimed not to be and next time- maybe be more specific instead of saying ‘can you pull the right lever?’’”
You sighed while pinching the bridge of your nose, now struggling to contain your laughter. Like the absolute shit he is- he found a loophole.
“Well as long as you aren’t tying me up to a windmill and flinging me into the heavens-“
You didn’t even get to end your sentence because Astarion began crying and laughing again.
Within an hour of the impromptu funeral, your situationship and the interests of the others in the group had been tested when you, Gale, Astarion, and Lae’zel found the Necromancy of Thay. You had accidentally stumbled across the room while searching the caverns underneath the Blighted Village and finding a strange purple amethyst. The book had immediately taken to it and you don’t know what Astarion had seen from the book, but he refused to back down and hand it to Gale.
“No!” Astarion says indignantly, “you aren’t eating this one!”
“I need it to stabilize-“
“I could give a rat’s ass about how stable your stupid chest orb is,” Astarion says while glaring, “this is far too special for the likes of you to consume.”
“It’s obviously a very powerful tome. It would be beneficial for helping my condition,” Gale huffs and then they both look at you.
Oh no.
“State your case?” You say awkwardly, “unbiasedly?”
They both scowl and Astarion pouts at you, but the look in his eyes tells you he understands to some extent that you at least have to let both parties argue their side. You did have a full blown melt down one of the first nights of the journey over not being able to make everyone happy. Astarion rarely put up a fight with you unless it was important to him. You do this with everyone, not just them, but you worry your relationship with Astarion will be seen as the influencing factor.
Gale simply stated that it had powerful magic that he would like to consume. You did mention that you have multiple items for him in your pocket at any given time, but he is still insistent.
Then Astarion makes his case and it’s actually very difficult to argue with it. It’s a book of Necromancy and he is undead. What if the book had a cure for his condition? Or at least a way to diminish the side effects? The desperation in his voice had somehow cracked Gale’s resolve- you didn’t even have to make a decision.
“Fineeeeeeeee,” Gale drawls, “have the damn book- you bastard.”
Astarion looks far too pleased with himself.
Asshole, you think with a smile.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You set up camp at your previous campsite near the Grove so that you can begin your journey into the Underdark.
The sun has already set and the moon shines brightly in the sky. You aren’t ready to go underground yet. You always miss the moon and stars.
You are sitting by the nearby river- enjoying the sounds of the roaring river with Karlach as the two of you try to sort out her love life.
“Soooo,” you raise your eyebrows at her, “is it going to be Wyll, Damon, or Shadowheart?”
“Ughhhh,” Karlach tips over and pretends to writhe in pain in the grass, “having choices sucks!!”
“Oh come on K,” you say teasingly, “you must have someone you are specifically gravitating towards.”
Karlach taps her chin and pretends to think. After a minute- she just looks at you and shrugs.
“I’ve got nothing.”
“Nothing? You spend so much time with Shadowheart and Wyll! Dammon I’d maybe understand being out of the running but what the hell man!”
“I know, I know,” Karlach sighs, “I mean you had Gale and Halsin up your ass- why Astarion?”
You are almost frozen by her question. Why does everyone but you notice when people fancy you?
Why did you choose Astarion? You know the answer, but you also don’t know how to phrase it without sounding like an emotionally clingy weirdo.
“Um well,” you cough awkwardly, “I guess I just really like who he is as a person. I think he’s really funny, intelligent, and whether he wants to admit it or not- he is kind, in his own way.”
You neglect to tell Karlach about the Gnome. You have a feeling she won’t love that whole mess.
“The first night we hung out and just talked was… it was like when I met Tessa for the first time. It was an instant- oh no I’d do anything for this person.”
You hug your knees and put your chin on them. You scrunch up your face and avoid her face.
“You look rather upset for someone who is horribly smitten.”
“I’m not upset- it’s just weird… feeling this way again,” you sigh heavily, “I really am a walking death trap though-specifically where lovers go to die. I probably should end it, right? To keep him safe?”
“I would let him make that decision if you are so worried about it,” Karlach waves her hands at you dismissively, “you like him-I believe he likes you. Fangs can make his own choices- we all know the risk of traveling with you as you know the risk of traveling with us.”
“That’s a good point.”
“Of course it is! I’m a genius!”
You roll your eyes, “So who’s it gonna be Karlach?”
“DAMMIT!”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The trek back to camp isn’t a long one, but you are ready to be in- well- a bed roll?
Astarion has found every excuse in the book to have you come and stay in his tent with him- except for just flat out asking you. It makes you quite giddy regardless.
One night he had even resorted to using the excuse that he needed your assistance and guidance in sharpening his throwing knives. You know what didn’t happen? Sharpening throwing knives.
The two of you had ended up tangled in each other’s embrace and talking until you eventually fell asleep. You woke up the next morning (entirely too early, the sun was barely rising) with him curled around you sleeping. You decided to go back to sleep- you weren’t ready to start your day. You’d rather stay here with Astarion.
You walk back to camp with a slight skip in your step- wondering if Astarion will want you to sleep in his tent with him again tonight. It had been a little less than a week since you had begun backtracking to the Underdark entrance and he had sought you out every night. You really REALLY hope he continues this trend.
Karlach is talking to you about the pros and cons of each partner- still entirely undecided- when you both hear a bone chilling cackle come from a tree in front of you. You both stop in your tracks immediately- Karlach reaches for the small blade she brought with her and you prepare your hidden daggers.
“Well if it isn’t good ole Corpse Eyes,” the mysterious woman says, “we thought you’d finally disappeared for good. Suppose we were wrong.”
You recognize the voice immediately as your fellow guild mate- Rinara. The two of you couldn’t stand each other. She wanted Dahlia to lavish her in all the attention and training she gave you- you just wanted to be left the fuck alone.
Rinara felt like you were a, “selfish fucking brat,” and had taken to calling you ‘Corpse Eyes’ because you had been entirely empty, rigid, and lifeless up until the last year. You were no better than a walking, mindless zombie to her.
Rinara steps around the corner and it takes every last bit of restraint you have not to let the horror show on your face.
Rinara was once a beautiful, almond haired half High Elf with a strong, healthy body. Now? Her skin is the color of Ash, her eyes are bloodlust red, her hair is coming out in clumps on her head, and her skin is peeling off like she has been sitting in an acid bath for a while now. Her left cheek is completely gone- revealing her teeth and gums.
“I was initially only here for the Spawn,” you feel your blood freeze as she smiles at you- all teeth and no light in her eyes, “but if Dahlia also had you…”
“You need to back the fuck off Rinara or-“
“Or what!? You’ll kill me?” She yells out hysterically, “I’m already fucking dead! You disappeared and so they sent fucking Dahlia to do your contract- a request from Obhark himself for the assassination of Lord Cazador Szarr.
“The woman struck a fucking deal with him- she’ll help get his prodigal son home and she’ll supply him with Deathbringers if she’ll be made his consort when he completes the ritual.
“I may not be able to control them,” she snarls, “but I do know that none of this would have happened if you hadn’t fucked off. This was supposed to be you! You are the one who should be tortured and violated! Not me! Not any of us!”
Huh, so your contract was to kill Cazador and because a Mindflayer kidnapped you- Dahlia took the contract and has gone rogue. How very convenient. This certainly tracks with the ridiculousness of the other circumstances you are dealing with. If it’s not devils, then it’s the Gith. If it’s not the gith- it’s some sadistic vampire. There is no winning in this group. Halsin is the only one that doesn’t seem to have an issue yet, but you are waiting for the other shoe to drop on that one.
That’s not important right now- knowing what the ritual is? That would be very valuable. You and Astarion have tried to figure out what the carvings into his back are and what they represent. You can read infernal so you know what it says, but it doesn’t make total sense.
Hoyc inferiu non iurare per igneu
Naec virba loquor
Eoai mundo muoat
This soul swears no oath by fire
Nor words does he speak
In the realm of death
You both has assumed it was just a way to prevent him from making contracts with devils to be free of Cazador, but now knowing there is a ‘ritual’ happening- you wonder if it’s an integral part of the ritual, the scars. If they are, then that means you are going to be doing some heavy duty bodyguard work- if Obarhk himself had requested it, then it must mean it’s not good.
Which also doesn’t surprise you given the circumstances.
“What ritual,” you say through clenched teeth.
Her smile is unsettling, “It’s a secret- all I know is that it’s going to make Master very very powerful.”
She looks at you with so much pain and anger. You are Dahlia’s favorite chew toy- you had been keeping her out of harm's way (unintentionally) this whole time and now that she has Dahlia’s attention- she seems to realize now why you didn’t want it in the first place.
Rinara looks borderline feral- you can see it now. Dahlia evidently doesn’t know how to complete the ritual or she used a different one entirely- that’s why Rinara is somewhere between a Deathbringer and a skeleton in the making. You bite back the bile as you watch a piece of her flesh roll off of her arms onto the ground below.
“She tricked all of us- requested every Assassins’ aid that was not a Deathbringer. Told us Obarkh is going to pick one of us for a special project based on our ‘performance,” she spits at the ground, “then she turned us into these things- only ten out of the hundred of us that went survived. Cazador’s blood and Dahlia’s black magic flows through my veins and I survived to tell the tale- I am rotting away. I wish I died.
“And now? I’m going to have a feast- at least I can enjoy one last full meal before I disappear completely,” she bares her canines at you, “I wonder how Half Drow tastes- maybe I should ask those pigs that ate your bitch mother.”
You don’t even have time to reply before Rinara is lunging at you and Karlach. You both deftly dodge the display of all consuming rage that Rinara throws into her movement.
Rinara has always been too blood thirsty to think logically during a fight and her recent transformation seems to have only made it worse- except now she’s stronger so she may be able to actually get some damage in- doubtful, but possible.
You and Karlach breakthrough the trees and you are barrelling towards camp. You are well-versed in unarmed hand to hand combat, but you can’t leave your life up to chance. You don’t know what Dahlia did to her, but it’s becoming clearer that it was not a Deathbringer ceremony that was performed. Her breathing behind you is ragged and rattling- the smell of her skin taints the air you breathe. She is here specifically for Astarion- you can’t afford to take any risk that could keep Rinara alive.
Everyone looks at you both in alarm as you grab your daggers from outside Lae’zel’s tent (she had offered to sharpen them and basically refused to let you say no). Karlach grabs her axe and yells frantically about some zombie woman who wants Astarion, but hates you and now she wants to consume you before taking Astarion back to Cazador. Oh and Dahlia is in on it too because apparently your disappearance had really caused some issues with a contract regarding killing the Vampire Lord.
You barely see the footsteps of the invisible person running up to you in time to dodge and you hear the scream of frustration rip through the air.
You make a wild guess regarding her location and throw a knife while she screams and cusses at you.
“I’ve been waiting to rip you piece by FUCKING piece since I met -“ she is cut off by a screech and revealing herself to your companions.
You had most definitely hit her- your blade stuck in her left eyeball. Rinara looks at you- significantly more pissed off than she was even a moment before-, rips out her eyeball using the throwing knife, discards it, and begins circling you.
Rinara is not bright and she lacks impulse control. She can remain in control for maybe only four or five minutes at a time- which would explain why hearing your voice is probably what set her off Astarion’s path. The chase bought you more time since Rinara loves a good hunt- you are almost positive you can break her down quickly and because she’ll be chasing a high, she’ll make stupid mistakes. Rinara also loves to talk and taunt her targets which infuriates you, but at least it’s a full proof trap for her.
“You don’t always need to be stronger than your opponents,” Dahlia says as she watches you get the shit kicked out of you by a hired mercenary, “you just need to be faster, smarter, and calm- let them dig their own grave.”
Your companions are clambering for their weapons and you send out a “don’t move” message telepathically. Astarion protests hit your brain like a wave- all you feel is fear. You tell him to trust you and you allow him to be privy to your thoughts and actions. You know exactly how quickly this will end after your next words and you don’t need her getting spooked.
“You know, Rinara, I’m not surprised Dahlia tricked you or that you were dense enough to drink Cazador’s blood- it certainly wouldn’t be the dumbest thing you’ve fallen for,” you smile at her, “I might actually feel sorry for you this time.”
You see your companions all staring at you as Rinara’s footsteps end just to the right of their line of sight. You can feel Astarion’s gaze burning into you and you have to focus hard on disconnecting. Embarrassment will not be helpful.
“What did you just say to me, you little wretch?”
“Oh sorry,” you clear your throat, “I SAID- I THINK YOU ARE REALLY REALLY FUCKING DUMB AND I’M NOT SURPRISED YOU GOT DOOPED.”
The sound of Astarion’s laughter fills your head- you fight to stop the smile that is threatening to cross your lips. The rage bristling off of her is so wonderful. You feel a dopamine rush over the way her teeth are chattering in anger, the way her eyes are paranoid and unfocused as she looks at you. You have gotten under her skin and now it’s your turn to be the predator.
“I’m going to enjoy bringing your skeleton back to Dahlia after I pick you clean,” she roars, “I’m going to enjoy watching that stupid Spawn finally fulfill his-“
“Do you ever shut up or ?” You ask, snorts and laughter coming from your companions, “I feel like I left that at a really good spot and we should just move forward or whatever?”
Oh the look of embarrassment, shame, and fury on her face- how you wish Lucia could have seen it. She could not stand Rinara and the way her face twists with the sour emotions is a wonderful sight to behold.
“I’ve changed my mind. I won’t eat you, I’ll just bring you back to Dahlia like the fucking disobedient thing you are! You” she spits, “are nothing, but a walking Corpse. You should have stayed dead- I liked you better that way. If Dahlia can do it once- I’m sure she’ll love doing it again. You’ll be tolerable and compliant soon enough.”
The cackle that leaves your lips surprises you.
“You always have been so fucking stupid, Rinara,” you hiss, “if you want Dahlia to love you so fucking bad you can have her. The price of her ‘love’ is hardly worth it- the woman is madder than that weird old guy next to brothel on 8th.”
“YOU ARE UNGRATEFUL!” Rinara screeches, “I WILL TEACH YOU A LESSON!”
You could not roll your eyes further back into your head. It should be easier to leave the Nightmasks. The idiocy is putting years on your immortal life.
“Doubtful, but you are welcome to try.”
Rinara lunges fast, but you are definitely faster. You imagine having intact skin helps. Rinara is hitting you with attack after attack and you just focus on dodging, getting in close for a quick hit, then back to dodging. She is the one dying, not you- let her do all the hard work.
Whatever spell Dahlia used did not promote Stamina or basic hygiene- unfortunately. Rinara is breathing hard and is already losing power in her hits.
This goes on for a couple minutes before Rinara does what she always does- lifting up her back foot ever so slightly so that she can extend her blade farther. You don’t know how many times you have to trip her for this mistake before she realizes she’s her own worst enemy.
You move out of the way and use her momentum- with a swift kick of your foot- Rinara went skidding across the dirt. Her blade is stuck in the ground near you almost perfectly upright. You walk over to it and you push it even further into the ground then stand directly in front of it, cutting off her line of sight to it.
“If you want your cheap ass sword back- come get it.”
It’s actually a very expensive sword and Rinara is very very defensive about it.
“YOU-“
Rinara doesn’t even allow herself to finish her sentence before she flings a massive bolt of lightning your way. Your companions are screaming as you run towards the lightning, but you know what you are doing. You dive just below the electric crackling in the air and roll back onto your feet. You watch as Rinara turns to you before she catches the blue bolt coming back towards her.
You didn’t always like to use your enemies weapons for their intended purposes, but when in need of a reflective surface- you can never go wrong with a sword.
Rinara goes flying towards the campfire- the smell of rotting burnt flesh fills your nose as she cries out in pain with every spark of lightning that jolts through her.
You take your time to walk back to the campfire, walking over with her sword in hand, and look through your pack- of course you left your Holy Water at home. At least you have wine- you pop it open and begin to drink. Rinara is still writhing on the ground and her flesh is even worse off than it was before. This really isn’t your favorite way to spend any evening- killing your formal frenemy because there is no rehabbing this version of her. It is all the worst of Rinara and then some.
You sigh heavily and walk over to her. You cock your head at her, leaning on her sword for support, and take another long sip of the wine. Rinara’s irritation is growing, but her body is practically in tatters now. She lashes out at you with clawed hands- you meet both of her wrists with her own sword- deftly cleaving them off her. The mortified scream that leaves Rinara’s mouth as she begins trying to back away from you. You smile at her with your vampiric stare- intensifying Rinara’s growing fear.
“Dahlia did a shit job training you. Didn’t she tell you the rules ? Use it and you lose it,” you take another swig.
“Hells Soldier!”
“Hey-“ you take an even bigger sip, “I’ve been waiting to take this one out back and put her out of her misery for five years. She’s obsessed with Dahlia of all fucking people and so she terrorizes me by interfering with my contracts! I will be enjoying my moment- thank you very much.”
“That’s not what I meant- you ‘use it, you lose it?’ That can’t possibly-“
You roll up your sleeves and the silence around the campfire is deafening as everyone stares- you should have probably not done that.
Blunt, deep lines around your wrist, old and faded into the skin. There are similar markings on your elbows right at your elbows.
“The reversal process involves blood magic and necromancy- if you were wondering. Oh and yes it does hurt, yes I have more, and no I won’t be talking about it.”
Rinara kicks you weakly- your shoulders slump. Is she serious right now? Consistency is key so off goes the foot. Rinara’s pained wailing echoes in the air.
One last giant swig and you feel less freaked out and embarrassed by your sudden onslaught of bravado. You hold out the bottle to Astarion who happily takes it and begins to drink from it- you can feel his eyes melting your skin and you are almost afraid to see the emotions in them.
You grab Rinara by the back of her collar and her wriggling barely stops you from being able to easily drag her along the forest floor all the way back to the river. Hopefully she’s close to the same concept as a vampire, but also Rinara can’t swim.
“Well my dumb friend,” you say with a snort, “this is where we part ways- permanently. I hope the fish like their dinner and you’ll stop talking so Goddamn much in fights during battles. This was way too much work for how fucking weak you are.”
Rinara is screaming and kicking. You let her go and walk about five feet in front of her- putting her between yourself and the river. You wave and smile like you are saying goodbye to a loved relative- followed with a middle finger.
You use a simple Push cantrip and watch with a sort of sick satisfaction as Rinara begins to burn up, steam coming up from the water as she is dragged away by the current.
“Well Roo, I would say that may be some of your finest work yet,” you say, giving yourself a pat on the back.
You turn around and see all of your companions. You suddenly feel ill and self-conscious. Wyll looks slightly horrified, Halsin is just unreadable, Karlach is giving you a thumbs up like it’s your first day of school, Shadowheart is nodding her head impressed, Gale is shocked, and Lae’zel is slowly clapping.
Astarion though? He’s looking at you with a mixture of gratitude, warmth, and pride. You try your best to avoid his gaze as you put your hand on your hip and lift an eyebrow at them. You might actually keel over from adoration if you look at him.
“What are you guys even doing? Good Gods you people are far too supportive and clingy,” you say trying to hide your smile and then look at Gale, “don’t you have something cooking?”
“SHIT!”
All of your companions turn around to leave, but Astarion begins to walk towards you and you feel like your heart might explode in your chest. You see Karlach celebrate behind him- giving you a thumbs up again and you shake your head at her.
You just fought a woman and barely broke a sweat, but the minute he even looks at you- you feel like your whole body is on fire. Strong hands, grab you by the hips and pull you into his chest before he then moves them to your face. Astarion cups your face in his hands and is looking in your eyes.
“You are a sight to behold, Darling,” he says breathlessly, “that was the most beautiful display of violence I’ve ever seen.”
“ I- uh,” you choke back the surprise, “just another day… on the job?”
“Oh well, let me thank you for your wonderful work then.”
“You don’t need to-“
Astarion presses his lips to yours and swallows up the words you were going to say. The kiss is rough, but slow and needy- hungry even. It makes you feel like he is yearning for you- worshiping you in a temple.
When you pull back for air, you see how his eyes are blown wide with lust and another emotion you can’t quite decipher- it’s positive, but also a little fearful.
“Stay with me?” He asks, his voice uncharacteristically shy, “in my tent?”
“Tonight?”
“Yes,” he pauses before saying quietly, “and every night after that too- if you want.”
You let a huge smile spread across your face and his nervous expression appears to melt away almost instantly. You step back from him and curtsy.
“I, a simple camp urchin, would be honored to stay in your tent with you, Lord Acunin,” you say teasingly.
Astarion rolls his eyes with a lopsided smile, but puts his arm out to you. You loop your arm through his as if you are two normal nobles courting each other.
“First we must feed you, my Lady,” Astarion states in an overly proper tone, you giggle and you see the corners of his mouth twitch further at the sound, “I must make sure my lover is well taken care of after all.”
You are hot from head to toe and Astarion absolutely has to notice. If he does, he doesn’t say anything, but you hope he hears how alive he makes your heart sound.
*************************************
“Never have I ever…” Gale says, “worked for a Devil.”
Astarion watches as Karlach and Wyll begrudgingly take a large sip of their choice of liquor. You are leaning your head on Astarion’s shoulder- the alcohol making you slightly more affectionate in public. Astarion would be lying if he said it didn’t give him a thrill to be this close to you- even if PDA might not be his thing.
“Never have I ever- been a vampire,” Karlach says slyly.
Both you and Astarion grumble- taking a shot.
“Never have I ever,” Shadowheart says, tapping her finger on her knee , “lit a building on fire.”
Every single one of you but Halsin takes a shot. Shadowheart giggles and then also takes a shot.
“Shadowheart,” Karlach says and looks at her with confusion, “you aren’t supposed to drink if you haven’t done it?”
“Oh no- I have,” Shadowheart slurs, “I just wanted another shot and couldn’t think of anything else.”
Karlach begins to chastise Shadowheart playfully- commenting on how she is already way too messed up and Shadowheart saying, “I am a CLERIC I can cure my own hangovers!”
Everybody chuckles and returns to the game- it’s Wyll’s turn. Wyll regards you and cocks an eyebrow.
“Hmmmmm…. Never have I ever killed a Liche.”
You snort and take a shot.
“NO!” Wyll exclaims, “I thought I had you that time.”
“Mhmmmmm,” you hum in acknowledgement, “I think I was- 15?”
Wyll is sitting on the edge of his seat- actually everyone is. Astarion watches you squirm in recognization that everyone wants to hear your story.
“Oh it was just a complete accident,” you say with a fake enthusiasm, “I was exploring a nearby temple during a contract and just happened to run into one.”
Everyone bought the story- Wyll comments that you have terrible luck which you laugh at. He has no idea.
Astarion already knows this story- Dahlia had dragged your halfway dead body all the way into an abandoned castle off the coast of the Sea of Stars, resurrected you, and then shackled your feet and hands together. She later hid the key for the shackles somewhere in the castle for you to find.
It was an exercise- a sadistic one. You had pissed her off the night before because you had refused to let you cut your hair. She had cut it all off, every last inch, after she had beaten you into submission by quite literally killing you. This was the second part of your punishment.
She told you that there is a Lich hiding in the castle and her expectations of you were high- you are not to receive even a single scratch and the Lich needed to be dead. The punishment for not meeting these expectations? You would go without eating for a week and you would be locked away in the basement- not allowed to leave or see Tessa. You killed the lich, but you were horrifically mauled in the process because you couldn’t find the key. It was a long week in that dark, cold, horrible basement. Dahlia had also hired Abdirak to reinforce how horribly you fucked up.
Astarion absentmindedly puts his hand on yours and gives it a reassuring squeeze- trying to disrupt the spiral you’re evidently about to go into. You look over at him and Astarion feels like he could melt. You look at him with so much gratitude and as if he is the most important person who has ever walked this earth. Gods he has really really fucked up his plan.
The game has continued to go on without the two of you and suddenly everyone is staring at you both.
“Did you both not hear the question?” Karlach snorts while wiggling her eyebrows.
You both look at each other and you laugh awkwardly before turning back to Karlach.
“Repeat?”
“Never have I ever felt romantically towards any form of vampire,” Wyll states, “Gale, Lae’zel, and Shadowheart have had their shots already- so now we are just waiting on you two.”
Astarion doesn’t even have to think about it- which could partially be because of how intoxicated he currently is- obviously he is taking a shot.
He pours some more alcohol in yours and his glasses- then looks at you. This is about when his drunk mind realizes that he is basically stating, “I like you, but do you like me?” With his actions and that there is still the possibility that you could reject him. He did fling a Gnome you were trying to save into the air today- not the most attractive thing a person can do. (It was kind of worth it though).
“Cheers?” He says with a smirk on his face- hoping his eyes don’t reflect how nervous he feels.
You squint your eyes at him playfully before clinking the glass, “Cheers.”
Karlach claps her hands excitedly and Wyll’s eyes are sparkling while he looks at her. Shadowheart also smiles widely at the display of support.
You and Astarion have been speculating who Karlach is going to end up with for days now- Dammon is still a possibility, but you both have decided that it’s least likely. Astarion thinks Shadowheart and you think it will be Wyll. There’s 100 gold on the line for whoever wins. If it ends up being Dammon though? Well you will both drink and commiserate together about how blind you had both been.
It’s your turn now and you look directly at Astarion, he isn’t sure how he feels about the mischievous glint in your eyes. Then you say your sentence out loud and he feels a laugh bubble up from his lungs.
“Never have I ever flung a Deep Gnome from a windmill.”
Astarion falls off the log- laughing just as hard as he had done earlier- as you regale the group with the story. Gods it had been such a wonderful experience- the look on your face had been priceless. He also silently appreciated that you were far more impressed with his loophole than upset about his actions.
The goodies of the group castigate him, but they are all laughing equally as hard as the both of you are. You paint a very vivid picture using hand gestures and words that Astarion has been teaching you in common to describe things. He relishes in how lovely and lively you are- Alcohol is such a wonderful thing. He can just enjoy you without that horrible nagging in his head that even being involved with you anymore is a bad idea.
When Astarion finally finishes laughing- he happily takes another shot.

oh my god I need to tell you. so I. a while ago I did a whole bunch of research on touch starvation. and did you know babies literally die if they aren't touched and held. and did you know regular physical contact between a child and their caretakers is important for the child being able to self-regulate their emotions. and did you know that when someone hugs a child what happens is it syncs up their nervous systems. if the child is upset or scared their heart rate calms and they produce less stress hormones etc. and through that the child's body learns to do that on its own. so babies that die from lack of physical touch are literally dying of too much stress. and children who don't get enough touch can have problems like stunted growth, weak immune systems, low weight, and stunted mental and emotional development.
AND KON WAS GROWN IN A TUBE. HED NEVER EVER BEEN TOUCHED. AND THEN HE LIKE, ALMOST NEVER GOT TOUCHED IN A GOOD WAY
I mean granted, the scientists probably figured out a way to inject some kind of cocktail of hormones and chemicals to stimulate the physiological effects of touch so that kon developed properly but like. he never actually experienced it
Cadmus is like, we're gonna make a teenage clone in a test tube, this surely will not result in a kid so desperate for human connection that even terrible relationships will feel good to him
also I just think the first time kon got one of Martha or Jonathan's hugs he must have felt like he died and went to heaven. and at the same time felt really weird, like WHY DO I FEEL IT IN MY BONES WHY DO I WANT TO CRY
WAAAAHHHHH YEAH ABSOLUTELY YES YEAH DEFINITELY YES. touch-starved kon who doesn't even realize how desperate for human connection he is. this kills the man (me)
i just think if you put him in the middle of a group hug pile between ma, pa, and clark, he'd literally start bawling. he'd have no idea why and he'd be so embarrassed but he would just be so overwhelmed. because he has never had prolonged sustained physical affection in any healthy relationship before and he's only little and . AUGH!!!!!
incidentally the touch-starvation is part of why i think kon and bart are so so tactile especially with each other. "raised in a tube" and "raised in vr" both do not very much healthy human connection make. and bart's at least got his family around him but he still sees a kindred spirit in kon. so they will both simply snuggle even while bickering wildly about every topic under the sun just for bickering's sake. any and all friends are more than welcome to join the snugglepile; the toll is just that they have to put up with the konbart bickering game.
but god. god yeah. yeah it ruins me a little bit. he's just a little boy :( and he doesn't even know.

TO MY LEONA LOVERS THIS ONE IS FOR YOU
Slightly suggestive!
okay okay so I was sitting on the floor thinking of stupid little Azul (love that man (っ´Ι`)っ)and working on the Amnesia Drabble I had of him which soon led me to thinking of Ruggie and how it'd be so cute to go on dates with him (Ahhhh! Hes so precious!) and then suddenly my mind drifted onto Leona and then some books I wanted to read.
Rivals to lovers or enemies to lovers is such a juicy and titillating trope for him omg! Like I can imagine it so vividly, like yessssssss. Imagine being a strong woman (Doesnt have to be physically of course) that of course he respects but will absolutely do his best to still try to one up you. Of course you reciprocate that and you always go all out whenever he's on the field with his team. Or maybe even though it isn't seen to be entirely fitting, think about being Academic Rivals with him! Literally anything between you two is a competition haha^^
Aside from your sex though, he wont go easy on you just cus of that factor. No, it's because he acknowledges your capabilities. Your passion and your spirit. Your witty and snarky remarks, which is always seemingly having him stay on his toes. Of course he carries respect for you, that is obvious. And honestly, even though he doesn't show it- it does excite him. You give him something to look forward to and you entertain the prince well.
"You could be my new personal jester with how much you like to entertain me, Herbivore."
"I bet that's all you ever dream about when you sleep. I'm a little touched to know you think of me so much~"
"Tch. Whatever your delusional ass self thinks."
But he's not denying it. Hes not denying it! Secretly, just secretly when all you think about is the competition, he's here not only trying to win the little rivalry you two share but your heart as well! Ah but he's such a big wuss>< Sometimes when you arent even looking the classmates behind him would see his tail wagging from side to side like a satisfied dog (Ironic since lions are from the feline tree).
When he sees you do better than him on a test by a mark or two, maybe even three! He cant help but just let out an unamused huff, turning his head as if he didn't care. And while you think it's just cus he's sucking it up or maybe acting like he doesnt care, he only turns his head to hide his face from you so you dont see the little smirk he has. God he loves seeing your prideful self, the way you so confidently and happily brag at how much better you did. But of course, he can always one up you anytime if he so wished too.
Before he knows it, he's up thinking about you. Shit, what kind of feelings are these? Before he only strived to do well in these kinds of things to only try and beat you, to see you grit your teeth in annoyance as he prides himself with his athletic abilities or his test scores. Now you have him staying up late and irritated, he should be asleep by now. You must've have done something, Something to have set him off. It drives Ruggie wonders that sometimes he'd actually try and study for some tests. You really managed to switch him up...
It was only until you were being chased by a group of guys from the same dorm all for swiping some food (but your reasoning was that you were hungry okay-). Running in a hurry you see Leona up ahead, walking at a good pace. Determined to just run passed him to run away from the crowd, you speed up your pace to turn the corner just as how he also turns the corner. When you make the turn you're caught off guard greatly, as his arms catch you with great force to the point you almost let go of your sandwich in your hands. He pulls you over to a nearby bush, one that was big enough to hide you both perfectly. Even better was that the bush was big enough to mask your guys scent. It was perfect.
"Leona what are you-!"
"Shh. Quiet." He leans his head a little lower with a stern look on his face, his green jeweled eyes angular as he looks on over you. The crowd continues running ahead with their haughty shouts and displeasure. Soon passing you both with no second thoughts.
"i'm doing you a solid. You should be thankful ya little thief."
You're caged in between his arms, lying under him on the grass. The sun pierces through the long blade of leaves and shines on his sea of brown hair beautifully as if running cacao simmered down. "I didn't ask for your help you know. I would've been perfectly fine without you." His body shadows over you, as if blanketing you under him.
He gives you a grin, leaning down a bit more as he eyes the sandwich crushed in your hands. "Really now? Because that sandwich sure isnt in the best condition."
You peer down, not knowing that the sandwich was squeezed and squashed in your grip. It was completely ruined.
"Fuck"
With the crowd gone, there was just silence between the two of you. Only getting conscious now of how literally close you two were. There was that feeling again simmering up from his chest. It felt like he was a kettle starting to slowly boil up. Now it makes sense. He understands these feelings, now that he has you under him like this. Being so close to you so discreetly as if you two were rebel teenagers hiding away from your guys parents.
"You're so annoying you know that?" He suddenly states. It definitely catches you off guard but you're quick to answer. You're annoying in the way that you're on his mind with the constant want of him being next to you like this.
"Huh? Where'd that come from all of a sudden? You're the one who put us in this position in the first place!"
You're starting to squirm around, getting irritated that you're in this situation with your competitor. But he goes on to firmly hold you still.
"Hey, stop that. You're gonna get all the sauce on me. I'm gonna smell." He says in a bit more firm tone.
"Then get off of me, I'm gonna go get me another sandwich." You say rather harshly. You reciprocate the firm look on his face as you slightly push yourself up, the leaves hitting your face a little.
"You mean steal another one? I'll pay for it. So stop causing trouble around."
You're a bit caught off guard. Leona seemed rather more... Whats the word. Gentle with you? You two have never been this intimate before, its a rather new feeling. He liked it.
"Hmm how about this. You accompany me to go get something to eat and I pay for it. Sounds like a pretty good deal dont you think?"
The way he says it so casually with that little smirk of his, his eyes looking so focused on you as if reading what you were thinking. His hand on your wrist as he hovers over you. It kinda sounds like he was asking you out on a-
"Date..."
"What?"
Huh. What. WAIT WHAT. You didn't mean to say that out loud! Oh no, you're face is getting hot, your heart is speeding up, your expression is pulled back into one of shock. "W-wait don't get me wrong! It just kinda sounded like a date! Argh what am I even saying?! God this is just so-"
"Yea, why not. Lets go out on a date." He brings your hand up to his mouth, licking the sauce off your hand as the crumpled up sandwich lays on the grass next to you. You're silenced as he his lips get into contact with you fingers, nibbling it against his canines ever so slightly as he laps up the dewy and runny substances. His eyes switching them up to meet yours.
"Just the two of us, i'll make sure to get you a better sandwich than that cheap one." He seems to love the look on your face, the way you're just taking all of this in. The way your face is an indescribable red. He's practically relishing himself in your quite yet loud reaction.
"relax, I aint gonna force you if you dont want to. I can take a reje-"
As he brings your hand down, before he could finish his sentence you go in and angle your head to the side. His ears perk up, so do his tail. You lean in forward, licking the side of his lips. When you pull back you're met with a surprised lion.
"Hehe, I wouldn't mind that. A little date with my competitor, I wonder how that'll go" You lean yourself back, your elbow helping you stay propped up. My god are you just so perfect. The way you just make his heart skip beats, he can finally admit it now. As much as he wanted to beat you in certain subjects and fields, he wanted to be yours all the more. He's always known. You're rivalry just being an excuse for him to keep having you close to his side like this. He's always liked you. But is it too early to say that he loved you? No, definitely not. He loves every part of you. He's already seen the more dirtier and flawed parts of you, and you've seen his. If you both have accepted each other doesn't that already prove much how much you two are willing to be with one another? That just gives you more time and more reason to find more of the beauties hidden within you both, all the more to love you and all the more for you to love him.
A strong smile is plastered on his face as the shade of the leaves hover over him, covering the both of you like a dome. "Hmm, how convenient for the both of us then." He leans in till your heads are almost touching, that is until his ears perk up and he turns his head away. You're caught off guard by this as you watch him look back and let out an irritated stare.
"Rook get your ass out of here damn it." He says it in such a bad and sour mood. Leona gets off of you and shifts his body towards where Rook seemingly was.
"Oh how utterly splendid indeed! I have always been so marveled by your ultra senses Roi du Lion! Sincerest apologies, I wasn't trying to soil the mood or interrupt you two. But I couldn't help but watch the beauty of love unfold right in front of my eyes! Such a fierce lion showing such tenderness towards his lioness! Ahhh such beauté! It drives me to tears!"
"Ah..." Well, this is embarrassing really. To think the two of you got caught like this. You really felt like a rebel teenager getting caught by your parents, who were oddly... Supportive? Regardless, it was still embarrassing. As Leona drives Rooks persistent self away, with full success he comes back to you and crouches down to help you up.
You two have a date to head to now. People have always known about your guys rivalry, but what a true shocker it'll be when people start finding out when you two start going out. I mean, every king needs his queen eventually. And you fit the throne to his heart perfectly. <3

Hi Leah! For strictly scandalous can you please do…..Drunkenly hitting on Bob at the bar with everyone. Like it’s making him such a wreck. But he knows he can’t do anything because his morals physically won’t let him.
“Hangman—please, you gotta take your sister home before I crack and end up taking her home myself!” Bob was practically ripping his own hair out in sexual frustration.
“Yeah, okay—“ Bob remembers Jake sighing in defeat, his night had been cut short by your drunken antics. Downing the rest of his beer before he stood. Making a direct path your way through the crowded bar—pushing people side to side before he was slumping you over his shoulder. “Come on you horny bitch, let’s get you outta here before Robert here ruins his tighty whities”
“But it’s not midnight yet!” You huffed over your brother's shoulder as he carried you out of the bar. It was New Year’s Eve. You’d all been out celebrating yet another year that the entire squadron had lived through together. A team united in blood sweat and compassion.
“Yeah well for you it’s midnight enough—“
That’s what led Bob to this moment, he’s got his tighty whities around his ankles. His jeans too, he couldn’t waist a second kicking them off as he slouched back on his couch—vigorously jerking himself off to the thoughts of everything you’d said to him in what he could only assume was a drunken haze. Come the first of January, which would be in approximately four minutes—you’d forget ever having tried to get Bob to take you home. But the memory would serve Bob well for now as he pumped himself to the thought of you.
“I think I’d really like it if you and I got outta here a little earlier—“ You had whispered in his ear earlier that night after only two vanilla and rhubarb cocktails. He could smell the spirits lacing your breath and knew instantly he couldn’t. Not when you were inebriated. “You know, I have a thing for this weapons system officer who always stops by my shop before and after his flights.” The comments started early on and were on all accounts quite vanilla. But they still had Bob in a flurry—stroking himself senseless as he let himself moan your name and think about everything he’d do to you if he’d just given in and taken you back to his.
“Like what you see?” Bob had been staring at you all night, the dress you’d been wearing was beautiful and classy but he wanted nothing more than to rip it off your body. His first tightened a little more as he slowly his rhythm down a tad. Not wanting to get to his destination too quickly. “Wanna see a little more?” You’d started to lift your dress a little higher so Bob could see more of your thigh. He’d panicked and gripped your wrist, stopping you from exposing yourself. The giggle you’d let escape told him you knew what you were doing. Taunting him. “You’re looking awfully flushed there Robert—wanna go down to the beach and cool off?”
“I’m not going anywhere with you, stop this—now.” Bob was trying his darndest. His mother had raised a true southern gentleman. He never swore he never drank. And he certainly never taken a girl he liked home to fuck her brains out before he’d taken her out on a real date no matter how much she was trying to make him crack. You were testing his limits though. “You’re doing things to me—“ Bob remembers whispering through gritted teeth as he felt his jeans getting too tight for comfort. The way your teeth sunk into your bottom teeth made his chest hurt. They were heart palpitations surely. “I’m going insane here, please—“
“Would it drive you crazy to know I’ve been fucking myself to the thought of you almost every night since I was transferred here?” It did in fact drive him crazy, but what made Bob lose his goddamn mind was when he’d lost sight of you for all of five seconds before you were taking his hand and placing a balled up bunch of black lace in his hand. “Here, hold these will you? I don’t need them anymore.” Pumping himself as he sighed in relief, Bob remembered that you’d given him your panties. He’d pocketed them in a hurry—so nervous someone had seen what you had done as he looked around, losing you in the process.
“Ohhh god yess—Y/n, baby—please.” Bob's chest rumbled as he continued working himself over in the dark of his living room. Wishing his hand was you. He’d thought about how you might feel, if you’d take control or let Bob do the work. Either way he wouldn’t mind, just as long as he got to call you his.
“Touch me?” You had asked as you sat beside Bob at one of the booths. He’d thought maybe some food would do you good. Confiscating your last drink in favor of something hot and carb loaded. “Please Bob, wanna feel your hands on me.” Spreading your legs under the table, you helped guide Bob's hand between your legs. His finger softly trailed up your thigh—landing dangerously close to your core. “Go on, touch me baby.” That was the moment you had him, Bob was about to crack, take you home and fuck you senseless but he couldn’t. He couldn’t do that knowing how much you’d regret it in the morning. This was all alcohol—it had to be. “I’m so wet just thinking about how you’d feel inside me.”
“You don’t know how bad I want you.” Bob growled against your lips before he pressed his lips against yours. Remembering the sensation that ignited the moment you two connected. Like electricity coursing through his veins. “But I can’t—you regret it.”
“The only thing I regret is not dragging you off to the bathroom and sucking you off right now.” Nope, nope that was it—Bob was on his feet making a Beeline for your brother the second you’d said that because he knew that you weren’t joking. You had those fuck me eyes everyone’s told him you gave him on a regular basis that he’d never noticed before.
Now here he was, jerking himself off because Rober Floyd couldn’t make a move. His phone rang beside him. Your face lit up the dark living room. Before he could even register what he was doing. Bob was answering on speaker.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“I wanted you to hear me say your name when I cum.” You were quick to explain as you moaned through the speaker. Bob pumped his fist against his slicked up cock as fast as he could. Too hard to think about the consequences they may come tomorrow. “Bob—! Oh Bob baby I’m so fucking close!” Holding your vibrator to your throbbing pussy. Legs splayed out as you bucked your hips against the intense vibrations. “Shit!! I’m gonna need you to tell me I can come for you Bob, please—please tell me I can come for you.” Was this phone sex? Was that what was happening right now? Or was Bob having a wet dream because he couldn’t tell. Either way? He wanted to play along.
“Oh you can cum for me any time, pretty girl.” Bob's drawl was way too prominent, a little more confident in the comfort of the darkness in his own living room. “God you sound so good moaning my name, shit—!” He was seconds away from release, trying to hold back his orgasm as Bob heard you yelp on the other side of the line.
“Ohhhh Bob I’m coming I’m coming I’m coming—!! Ahhhh fuck!”
“Oh I’m with you baby ahhhh—ohhhh ohhh yess!!” In respective houses, you came together. Bob all over his stomach as you laid there pulsing around your vibratory in a horny daze. Silence had never felt so loud as you collected your thoughts, Bob too.
“Hey Bob?”
“Yeah—?”
“Come over?”

Astrology Observations Pt.2
Only based of my personal experiences, take them with a grain of salt!
Sagittarius moon parents can sometimes become resentful of their children. Children’s constant emotional needs can make an underdeveloped Sagittarius moon feel constricted and bound to the child. They urn to escape any situation they feel stuck in. Also Sagittarius is the opposite of Gemini which rules the 3rd house. The 3rd house is tied to youth and communication, which can bring underlying tension to the relationship. Often a Sagittarius moon parent will seemingly suddenly become very invested in their children after they have become independent adults/older teens and the Sagittarius moon feels like the relationship is no longer tying them down.
If you have strong Black Moon Lilith aspects, along with having strong desirable energy and difficulty relating to traditional feminine figures, you may have fertility issues possibly in the form of a chronic illness.
Prominent Lilith placements/aspects invoke extreme and sometimes domineering reactions from others but let this be your litmus test for people that deserve your time.
Tumblr media
Planets that touch your pluto will be amplified in their energy. Venus Pluto aspects can even make a Sagittarius venus individual become very intense and clingy, even if they will still leave abruptly if you fail to meet their standards. They will attract more controlling partners as well. Moon Pluto aspects can make a Taurus moon individual have shockingly intense emotional outbursts or spirals even.
Strong Lilith aspects may have to grow out of thinking they want to attain traditionally feminine goals. Lilith thought she wanted to be the perfect wife to Adam, but when he tried to become domineering she realized her freedom and happiness was worth so much more than her original goals. Lilith rising/aspects to your rising? You may have worked to appear traditionally feminine in an awkward phase of life that never really seemed to fit you. Lilith touching 11th? You may have always craved a girl group and to have a close circle of feminine friends, but you have been hurt by many of those people instead when they desired you too intensely and/or turned on you. These friends may have even aligned against you to form a girl group explicitly opposed to you. A lot of Lilith is about unlearning discomfort with alternative paths of life and forms of expression.I believe strong Lilith aspects are just as intense and about learning lessons ad Pluto and Saturn aspects can be. (I’m a Scorpio rising and Capricorn stellium)
Pisces/Neptune influencing the big 3 can bring out a creativity like no other. Ethereal and otherworldly in the ways they’re able to express themselves and their talents.
Explore your 2nd house placements to find out what physical experiences can make you feel grounded and safe. Venus in 2nd house? Catching up with friends over a meal or going out on a dinner date could really be rejuvenating for you. Mercury in 2nd house? Try writing in a journal, writing out your feelings or creative story writing might really refresh your energy. 2nd is ruled by Taurus, treat yourself to some physical experiences to lift your spirits.

pairing: Spencer Reid x fem!oc

warnings: none for this chapter
words: 1,7k
Spencer sat at his desk at the BAU, sorting through paperwork on a Monday after the baby shower. The atmosphere still carried the warmth from the celebration over the weekend. As Spencer focused on his work, Derek approached with a friendly smile, leaning against the edge of Spencer's desk.
"Hey, Reid," Derek greeted. "I heard the baby shower was a hit. Sorry I couldn't make it. How was it?"
Spencer looked up from his paperwork. "It was great, actually. JJ and Will seemed really happy, and everyone had a good time."
Derek nodded, then a curious expression crossed his face. "By the way, how's Molly?"
Spencer's eyebrows furrowed in surprise. "Molly? How did you...?"
Derek chuckled, interrupting him. "Garcia couldn't resist spilling the beans. She said you two hit it off."
Spencer's cheeks tinted with a faint blush. "Oh, well, yeah. Molly's really nice. We shared a good conversation."
Derek grinned, nudging Spencer playfully. "Reid, you sly dog. Any chance of a second date?"
Spencer stammered, "I don't know. We'll see. It was just a friendly chat. We exchanged phone numbers."
Derek, still grinning, continued the playful banter, "So... did you make use of that number yet? Smooth moves?"
Spencer chuckled, shaking his head. "No, not yet. I don't want to be too much, you know?"
Derek raised an eyebrow, teasingly. "Come on, Reid, a little 'too much' never hurt anyone. Go for it. You never know unless you try."
Spencer sighed, a half-smile playing on his lips. "Maybe you're right. We'll see how it goes."
Derek clapped him on the shoulder as he headed back to his desk. "That's the spirit, Reid. Keep me posted on the developments. And remember, I'm the expert on these matters."
Spencer chuckled, getting back to his paperwork but unable to suppress a small smile.
Suddenly Garcia approached them with a stack of files in her hands. Her normally vibrant demeanor seemed to have shifted into a more serious mode, and the sight of her with files in hand indicated one thing - a new case.
"Hey, lovebirds," Garcia said, her tone serious, "I hate to interrupt your social hour, but we've got a case."
Spencer and Derek exchanged a quick glance before Spencer responded, "What's the situation, Garcia?"
Garcia handed the files to Spencer, her expression still somber. "It's a tough one. Unsub's been escalating, and the local authorities in Montana are requesting our expertise."
Spencer took a deep breath, all traces of playfulness gone.
.......................
The morning light streamed into Molly's apartment, casting a warm glow that illuminated the space. Her kitchen table was scattered with papers—students' tests awaiting her attention. However, her thoughts were far from the papers in front of her.
With each passing day, she found herself eagerly awaiting Spencer's call. It's been a week since they've met. She couldn't shake off the magnetic pull she felt toward him since that encounter at the baby shower. His intelligence, paired with the endearing quirks, left a lasting impression on her.
As she went about her daily routine, her thoughts often wandered to Spencer, and the soft-spoken eloquence that accompanied his words. Molly found him beautiful in a way that went beyond the surface.
However, Spencer possessed a distinctive physical appearance that Molly couldn't help but find captivating. His face was framed by tousled chestnut hair, which fell gracefully across his forehead, occasionally drifting into his expressive hazel eyes, which sparkled with intelligence and curiosity.
His facial features were a harmonious blend of sharp angles and soft contours, giving him an almost ethereal quality. High cheekbones accentuated his face, and a pair of expressive eyebrows added character to his thoughtful expressions. Despite the occasional furrow of concentration, his face carried an air of approachability that drew people in.
Beneath the intellect and curiosity was a lean and lanky frame. While he may not have had the imposing presence of some, there was a quiet confidence in the way he carried himself, making him stand out in a crowd. Molly found herself captivated not just by his physical features, the unique blend of intelligence and approachability but also by the way he dressed.
She appreciated his unique sense of style, a departure from the conventional attire she often encountered. Spencer's wardrobe choices reflected an individuality that stood out, even in a room full of people.
His penchant for slightly mismatched ties and the comfortable, yet slightly rumpled, look of his clothing added a charming touch to his overall appearance. Molly admired the authenticity in the way he presented himself, appreciating the fact that he didn't conform to conventional fashion norms for a guy his age.
Observing young men who dressed similarly wasn't a common sight for Molly, and she found it endearing. The way he carried himself, coupled with his unique fashion sense, only added to the allure that had captivated Molly's thoughts since the day they met.
However, as the days passed without any communication from Spencer, doubts crept in, making Molly question whether she had misinterpreted the connection or if perhaps Spencer's reserved nature was hindering him from taking the next step. Perhaps he saw their interaction as nothing more than a pleasant conversation at a social event.
Nevertheless, Molly couldn't deny the lingering hope that, just maybe, their paths would cross again.
The uncertainty weighed on her and she couldn't help but replay their conversation in her mind, searching for any signs that she might have misunderstood. Did he feel the same way, or was she just reading too much into it?
Each day she checked her phone, hoping for a message or a call, but the screen remained disappointingly blank. Molly questioned herself, wondering if she had misjudged Spencer's interest or if he was simply too preoccupied with work.
In the midst of her internal turmoil, Molly couldn't deny the impact Spencer had made on her. She found herself yearning for a chance to know him better, to explore the possibility of something more. However, the silence from Spencer's end left her feeling a bit disheartened.
She found herself caught in a mental tug-of-war, debating whether she should take the initiative and call Spencer or continue to wait for him to make the first move. Part of her yearned to hear his voice, to bridge the gap of uncertainty that lingered between them. Yet, another part hesitated, fearing that making the first move might come across as too forward or desperate.
As she weighed the options, Molly considered the possibility that Spencer, with his reserved nature, might be navigating similar internal conflicts. The thought crossed her mind that Spencer, despite his intelligence, might have his own set of insecurities.
She couldn't meet with JJ this week due to Henry falling ill, leading to the cancellation of their piano lessons. It felt inappropriate to reach out to either her or Will to inquire about Spencer. They've only just met.
Molly took a deep breath, realizing that waiting for Spencer might be keeping her from new possibilities. Determined to move forward, she decided to answer the message she received on the dating app the previous night. Some guy named Rick, had asked her out to dinner tonight.
With newfound resolve, Molly responded positively, agreeing to the dinner invitation. She acknowledged that spending the weekend alone wasn't the solution, and it was time to embrace the opportunity to meet someone new. As she confirmed her plans for the evening, a sense of empowerment and excitement filled her.
.......................
As they stepped out of the restaurant into the cool night air, Rick's grin widened, and he casually suggested, "Hey, Molly, how about we continue the night at my place?"
Molly, taken aback by the unexpected proposition, hesitated for a moment before responding, "Oh, um, thanks for the offer, Rick, but I prefer taking things a bit slower. We just met, you know?"
Rick's face tightened with an edge of frustration, and he chuckled dismissively. "Come on, Molly, we're both adults here. No harm in having some fun. What's the big deal?"
Molly, maintaining her composure, replied firmly, "I appreciate the offer, but I'm not comfortable with that. I'd rather get to know someone better before going to that kind of place."
Rick's frustration transformed into a more overt anger, his brows furrowing as he retorted, "Well, that's just typical! You women are always so damn complicated! Can't even have a good time without all these rules!"
As Rick left in a huff, Molly couldn't help but feel a mix of disappointment and frustration. It was clear that all he had in mind was a superficial connection, and she wanted so much more than that. Realizing that Rick had shown little interest in getting to know her just to get her into his bed broke her heart a little.
As Molly turned, a wave of frustration and hurt washed over her. The tears flowed freely as she made her way back to her apartment, the sobs escaping her throat echoing the ache in her chest. The dream of a genuine connection seemed to shatter in the face of Rick's dismissive attitude, leaving her feeling not just upset but emotionally wounded.
Each step towards her apartment felt heavier, carrying the weight of dashed expectations and the sting of rejection. The quiet weeping turned into a soft, heart-wrenching lament.
In the solitude of her apartment, Molly sank into a moment of vulnerability on her couch. The pain lingered and in the midst of her tears, her thoughts inevitably turned to Spencer once again.
As Molly's thoughts swirled around their chance meeting and the desire for a more, her phone unexpectedly rang. The sudden interruption startled her, and she hastily wiped away the remaining tears before answering. To her surprise and relief, Spencer's name flashed on the screen.
"Hello?" Molly answered, her voice carrying a mix of surprise and anticipation.
"Hey, Molly," Spencer's gentle voice came through the line. "I wanted to apologize for not calling sooner. It wasn't okay. The case we were on took longer than expected. I'm really sorry I didn't call. I meant to, I truly did. Things got a bit hectic..."
Molly's heart skipped a beat, a mixture of emotions flooding her. "It's okay, Spencer. I understand."
Spencer continued, "I was wondering if you're free tomorrow? I'd really like to make it up to you. How about that coffee we talked about?"
Molly's lips curled into a tentative smile. The unexpected call seemed to wash away the lingering disappointment, replaced by a renewed sense of hope. "I'd like that! Coffee sounds great. I don't drink it though. I'll have tea!"
Molly couldn't help but feel a rush of relief and excitement. The decision to wait or make the first move and some guy named Rick, became irrelevant in that moment, replaced by the anticipation of what could unfold between her and Spencer.
