FYI artists and writers: some info regarding tumblr's new "third-party sharing" (aka selling your content to OpenAI and Midjourney)
You may have already seen the post by @staff regarding third-party sharing and how to opt out. You may have also already seen various news articles discussing the matter.
But here's a little further clarity re some questions I had, and you may too. Caveat: Not all of this is on official tumblr pages, so it's possible things may change.
(1) "I heard they already have access to my data and it doesn't really matter if I opt out"
From the 404 article:
A new FAQ section we reviewed is titled “What happens when you opt out?” states “If you opt out from the start, we will block crawlers from accessing your content by adding your site on a disallowed list. If you change your mind later, we also plan to update any partners about people who newly opt-out and ask that their content be removed from past sources and future training.”
So please, go click that opt-out button.
(2) Some future user: "I've been away from tumblr for months, and I just heard about all this. I didn't opt out before, so does it make a difference anymore?"
Another internal document shows that, on February 23, an employee asked in a staff-only thread, “Do we have assurances that if a user opts out of their data being shared with third parties that our existing data partners will be notified of such a change and remove their data?” Andrew Spittle, Automattic’s head of AI replied: “We will notify existing partners on a regular basis about anyone who's opted out since the last time we provided a list. I want this to be an ongoing process where we regularly advocate for past content to be excluded based on current preferences. We will ask that content be deleted and removed from any future training runs. I believe partners will honor this based on our conversations with them to this point. I don't think they gain much overall by retaining it.”
It should make a difference! Go click that button.
(3) "I opted out, but my art posts have been reblogged by so many people, and I don't know if they all opted out. What does that mean for my stuff?"
This answer is actually on the support page for the toggle:
This option will prevent your blog's content, even when reblogged, from being shared with our licensed network of content and research partners, including those that train AI models.
And some further clarification by the COO and a product manager:
zingring: A couple people from work have reached out to let me know that yes, it applies to reblogs of "don't scrape" content. If you opt out, your content is opted out, even in reblog form. cyle: yep, for reblogs, we're taking it so far as "if anybody in the reblog trail has opted out, all of the content in that reblog will be opted out", when a reblog could be scraped/shared.
So not only your reblogged posts, but anyone who contributed in a reblog (such as posts where someone has been inspired to draw fanart of the OP) will presumably be protected by your opt-out. (A good reason to opt out even if you yourself are not a creator.)
Furthermore, if you the OP were offline and didn't know about the opt-out, if someone contributed to a reblog and they are opted out, then your original work is also protected. (Which makes it very tempting to contribute "scrapeable content" now whenever I reblog from an abandoned/disused blog...)
(4) "What about deleted blogs? They can't opt out!"
I was told by someone (not official) that he read "deleted blogs are all opted-out by default". However, he didn't recall the source, and I can't find it, so I can't guarantee that info. If I get more details - like if/when tumblr puts up that FAQ as reported in the 404 article - I will add it here as soon as I can.
Edit, tumblr has updated their help page for the option to opt-out of third-party sharing! It now states:
The content which will not be shared with our licensed network of content and research partners, including those that train AI models, includes: • Posts and reblogs of posts from blogs who have enabled the "Prevent third-party sharing" option. • Posts and reblogs of posts from deleted blogs. • Posts and reblogs of posts from password-protected blogs. • Posts and reblogs of posts from explicit blogs. • Posts and reblogs of posts from suspended/deactivated blogs. • Private posts. • Drafts. • Messages. • Asks and submissions which have not been publicly posted. • Post+ subscriber-only posts. • Explicit posts.
So no need to worry about your old deleted blogs that still have reblogs floating around. *\o/*
But for your existing blogs, please use the opt out option. And a reminder of how to opt out, under the cut:
The opt-out toggle is in Blog Settings, and please note you need to do it for each one of your blogs / sideblogs.
On dashboard, the toggle is at https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/blogname [replace "blogname" as applicable] down by Visibility:
Tumblr media
For mobile, you need the most recent update of the app. (Android version 33.4.1.100, iOs version 33.4.) Then go to your blog tab (the little person icon), and then the gear icon for Settings, then click Visibility.
Tumblr media
Again, if you have a sideblog, go back to the blog tab, switch to it, and go to settings again. Repeat as necessary.
If you do not have access to the newest version of the app for whatever reason, you can also log into tumblr in your mobile browser. Same URL as per desktop above, same location.
Note you do not need to change settings in both desktop and the app, just one is fine.
I hope this helps!

So there's this post with a troubling number of notes going around insisting that "dead dove" is not a genre, it doesn't inherently have anything to do with darkfic, and that the tag could be applied to fics that are "100% fluffy where everyone's having a good time" if they happen to contain some abnormal (though entirely non-problematic) content like an unusual kink. The claim is that "dead dove: do not eat" is simply a "courtesy tag" that means "this is a very specific niche, mind the tags." And that's just... wrong.
I wrote up a whole rebuttal to this post since I can't stand misinformation and frankly OP was being kinda rude and judgey on top of their wrongness. But right after I posted my reply, OP turned off reblogs because, and I quote, “some fuckwad added some dumb shit onto this post and it is no longer educational” (the “fuckwad” being me and the “dumb shit” being proof that they were wrong). A couple people have asked me to make a rebloggable version of my response, which I've decided to do because this isn't the first time I've heard similar claims and I want to help set the record straight. However, I'm not linking the original post on the off chance this gains traction because OP did the right thing by turning off reblogs, preventing it from circulating further, and I don't want them to get hate for being unfortunately misinformed.
For those who don't know the history, "dead dove: do not eat" was originally proposed as a catchall "hydra trash party" alternative label for any fandom to warn that the content of a fic may be considered problematic or potentially upsetting and to read the tags carefully so you know what you're getting into and won't complain later. Specifically, DD:DNE was intended to convey that the Bad Things in the fic would likely be reveled in and not explicitly condemned by the narrative, which some people tend to get up in arms about, hence the need for the extra warning in addition to the tags. Don't believe me? Here's the original proposal (note DD:DNE can be found on a handful of fics dated before 2015 but this is when it really took off and became a Thing).
There are currently around 50,000 fics tagged as "dead dove: do not eat" on AO3 and close to 50% of those also include the rape/noncon warning (which of course is not the only type of "dead dove" but is one of the most popular and most consistently tagged). The normal percentage of noncon fics in any given fandom? Around 1-3%. That's a HUGE disparity. So don't tell me that dead dove is just a general "courtesy tag" and doesn't or shouldn't have dark connotations. Even the context of the original joke on Arrested Development has a dark undertone. Micheal Bluth casually finds an animal carcass in a bag in his refrigerator with the label "do not eat", as if eating it would be any sane person's first thought. The whole situation is kinda fucked up. And this fucked up vibe very much carries over into fandom usage too, as was intended.
The claim that dead dove has nothing to do with the content's genre and could just as easily be used to describe a 100% fluffy fic in which everyone's having a good time is straight up Wrong, or at the very least, severely warping the original meaning. Also, when someone these days says that they like/dislike "dead dove" most people in fandom automatically understand what that means because of the consistency of its usage over the years and the way language evolves. Whether you like it or not, "dead dove" IS a genre now and the term does carry a specific connotation. I do agree that DD:DNE should definitely still be used in conjunction with other tags, when applicable, to be explicit about the exact type of fucked up content you may find, but to say that the term is meaningless on its own is patently false and I'm tired of people who don't know what they're talking about pushing this narrative and causing even more confusion.
You want a generic term that also means "mind the tags" and doesn't have any inherently dark connotations? Just use good ol' "what it says on the tin" instead of trying to force dead dove to be something it's not.

Once again I am asking you to support artists by:
Checking their policy on reposting their art to other websites,
After checking if they are not already on the platform themselves, and
Providing a LIVE HYPERLINK to their website if you have their blessing to repost.
I don't post my work to Twitter any more for a reason, and if this person had taken a moment to look at my bio they would have known not to do this. Half a million views were given to someone who was not me, to people who do not know how to find more of my work nor have context for the original comic.
My screenname is in the original post, so I guess that's something.

I was telling some friends about how useful the archive feature on Tumblr is, so I went to find an old post I'd reblogged and added to a while back. I wanted to update a couple of things in my reblog of it, but I kept getting an error message about the original post's reblog settings, so I then discovered that reblogs have been turned off. :( Anyway, here's the OP if you want to check it out, and my addition, which I hope is useful to some folks:
I highly recommend using your Tumblr archive on desktop (or mobile browsers)! Without it, Tumblr is kind of a black hole that eats anything you share, and I would never be able to find things I've posted or reblogged.
For folks who don't know how tags work in your blog's archive, you can search for any tag you've ever used and the archive will show you all those posts and reblogs in a handy grid format. For example, if I want to see the fics I've recommended, broken down by month, I go to (remove the spaces after the periods):
cacodaemonia. tumblr. com/archive/tagged/fic rec
Once the page loads, the url will read 'fic%20rec' at the end, but you can enter tags normally when you're searching for them. In other words, use spaces and don't worry about the %20.
You can also use the archive with other people's blogs, assuming they have 'enable custom theme' toggled on under blog settings (there's some disagreement about this in the OP linked above - possibly, you can see anyone's archive if they have certain visibility settings toggled? idk). So if someone you follow uses consistent tags for their art, fics, gifs, meta, etc., you can use the same url format above—just replace my username with theirs, and 'fic recs' with whatever tags you want to search for.
This probably seems super basic for a lot of Tumblr users, but it's something I figured out on my own after ages of being frustrated with the site's 'search function,' so hopefully this will be helpful for people who don't know about the feature.

there is so much art reposting (and subsequent reposted art sharing) in this fandom. Is that a topic that fell off the face of the earth in the late 2010s and no one took the time to explain to you why and how you shouldn't do it?
First, reposting art means saving or copying the art to create a new post and/or putting it on another platform yourself. On tumblr, reblogging (the two arrows 🔄) is not reposting, as the original poster is still directly linked to it.
Reposting art without asking the artist's permission is rude more often than not. Many artists even have a "do not repost" warning on their page.
Why is this rude? There are a vast range of reasons, and the first one is always because the artist, a person, expressed a wish, and that's on you to respect it.
Other reasons include, for example, fanartists wanting to see the fandom's feedback and be inspired to continue to share (shaking hands with the fanfic writers), artists needing the word-of-mouth advertising as they depend on commissions and/or independent shops income for living, and just generally wanting to keep their own stuff close.
As fellow fans and/or art enjoyers, not having clear credit and link back to the artist is also sad and frustrating. What if we wanted to see more? What if there was a whole collection of similar things and we'll never know?
I know you want to share the cute art you saw elsewhere specifically because you liked it, and it comes from a place of love. I get that. You could share it with your friends behind closed door (ex: private discord server), or post a link to the art and the artist instead of posting the piece on its own.
On a case-by-case basis, you can ask an artist if you can repost their art. Some will allow it under certain conditions! Your responsibility is to respect their wishes. That is a person sharing their creation. Be nice.
"credit to the artist" is not credit.
"I don't know who made this, if anyone knows tell me" is not credit.
"this was from pinterest" is not credit. (<- pinterest is 90% repost, not a source at all)
Posting art that isn't yours is so rude and sharing reposted art just as much.
This is frustrating. Stop reposting art without asking, and especially stop reposting art without credit. And stop sharing reposted art where clear consent wasn't given by the original artist.

PSA that the RPC seems to need, yet again:
'No' means no.
'I don't want to' is a valid reason.
'I feel uncomfortable with that' does not need further explanation.
None of these things mean 'convince me', 'whine about it', 'keep asking' (or 'keep asking in different ways'), 'suggest they just 'try it and see'', 'vague and guilt them about it' and very definitely not 'write the thing into your muse's replies anyway'.

Warning to Empty Blogs
This is mostly a note for those who may have recently come to tumblr and do not understand the importance of actually using your blog.
If you follow me, and have a default profile icon, and no posts or reblogs on your page, there is a chance that I am going to block you for thinking you are a bot/spam account.
I go through my recent follows every week or so, and if blogs like this have not updated their icon or made any posts or reblogged anything to their blogs, I will assume they are in fact bot accounts and will block them. *I'm not referring to those who have not reblogged anything from me, I mean those who haven't reblogged anything at all in general.
Blocking empty blogs, is a common thing that blogs do, so if you suddenly cannot access blogs you follow, this is a likely reason.
So, how do you avoid getting blocked? Upload a profile picture, change your banner, add a bio (no need to put any personal info unless you want. Just add a 'hello', a quote, anything). Do more than just like posts. Reblog, or maybe make some original posts.
This is not the kind of site you should remain completely inactive on. There are like buttons, and reblog buttons for a reason.
*Also, if your blog remains empty and inactive, even if you log into it daily, there is a chance that it will be deleted by staff for mistaking you as a bot as well.
Example of a possibly bot/spam account:
Tumblr media
^this kind of blog will most likely get you blocked, sorry.

In regards to these Ko-fi uploads…I need to be real for a moment. I don’t have a therapist right now so I’m venting it here so I can just get it out.
…*sighs* I’m not exactly good at moving. I hate change to the point where it worsens my fatigue into immobility or extremely limited mobility. Even if said change is good for me. I don’t exactly have a space where I can just hide and nest for awhile.
I’ve been suggested to go to a crisis center in case things worsen. It’s free walk in but-
It’s…not the cost. I’m moving on the 15th. A lot of my trauma stems from psych wards, hospitals, and crisis centers. I’m…not exactly the most willing because of that. But I appreciate the sentiment this person was looking out for my sake.
My housemate (who owns the place I’m currently residing) didn’t see me here in June. Which meant I needed to find a place to go. It’s fine. I knew this wasn’t home. But I was subconsciously hoping it would be one day. Despite my housemate making it clear a couple times that he didn’t see me here in June. When he said that, I realized this wasn’t home. I feel so displaced that…anywhere I go, I have that hope. So it hurts to be disappointed in that hope.
However, I did. But…it meant leaving where I am and back to the county where my abuser and ex-friend who SA’d me is. Not the same city. But still, my partner is in the vicinity I’m moving to. I trust them, and I know that if I’m not staying indefinitely at the place I’m couch surfing to, I’m not getting kicked to the curb.
She said she’ll ensure I have another location to stay safely that I won’t be on the streets again. Which I am grateful for.
I’m exhausted, I haven’t packed much but-…I might start tossing shit in the garbage at this point. …. There’s a lot of things I’d rather give away to better homes but I’m not certain anyone’s going to take them despite my situation. Plus these are things from people that no longer…are in my life. For various reasons.
I’d love to give them new homes…a lot of em are useful and cute mini plushies…because I don’t got a lot of space.
All this to say…if none of these get taken.. then they’ll be tossed. I hate to do that, but it is what it is.

March 4, 2024 Edit of this still relevant post from February 27, 2024
For those that view any of my online presences (including my blogs)…Um, this is something for you to know.
Please save this post so it doesn’t get buried by queue.
My& Current Health Situation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I wish to communicate this to y’all now so that…I don’t end up worrying anyone when this happens. It may have been noticeable by some folks that I’m dragging, heavily. I’m not having a good time right now with my body. With this comes with an onion of issues detailing certain aspects of what I’m going through.
I know I have a lot of obligations. Not only as a creative and content creator; but as a friend, a mentor, Guardian or even older peer, and myself. I’ve neglected myself for too long. I have been noticing my vitality decrease; and my CFS and POTS flaring up further.
Social Justice is something I’m always perceiving and sensitive to; and as such, the strain I’ve noticed too late has been worsening. Includes many emotional meltdowns and outbursts from me that I can no longer control or hold back.
Trying to figure out how to exactly sort through the mass tangles of my traumatized emotional and mental state isn’t as simple as I hoped for me. While I’m creatively burned out, I am suffering Autistic burnout. A double whammy of all things.
I’m finding myself getting “stuck,” unable to physically move for hours at a time. I’d move upstairs to eat something but end up being there for what’s normally an half hour task…for nearly 2+ hours. Even so, trying to force movement to do tasks that is considered “everyone can do these” is mentally painful and physically locking. Even if I have to desperately use the bathroom when I’m about to fall asleep, my headmates (AKA alters) have to switch to co-front or “snatch me back” in order to get my body moving. That’s with the sudden rocket spike in heart rate and blood pressure, and loss of balance (at the very least).
I’m already struggling to cope with many things due to the fact that I haven’t been able to draw much at all; or create anything and write anything. Especially trying desperately to fulfill my word on things I had the energy to do, but no longer do. So much of my struggles I can’t properly transmute. It’s so upsetting.
Thus, there’s going to be a sudden and abrupt shift in posting or messaging. I don’t know when. But it is coming.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━
(Especially since I’ve been feeling mania over the weekend. All weekend, Saturday and Sunday, I manic cleaned large portions of certain areas I occupy as well as my housemate. Today I’m feeling the aching in my joints badly, with my calves swearing hell at me. I’m wearing my wrist brace too, I just…I’m rambling.)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I wish for you to know what’s happening if you don’t see or hear from me, my headmates, or any of my online presences (as depicted here: https://cjoatbysamwise.com/cjoats-links ) No one is being forgotten. I’m not abandoning anyone. I’m not ghosting anyone. What I do know (still coming to terms with it ngl) is I need to stop, fully stop, and recover. It’s looking like my body is going to do that for me by force. It’s going to be abrupt and sudden to the inconvenience of many, including my housemate, unfortunately.
I don’t know how long this will last. But I don’t know how long I’ll be able to keep “hustling” like this. Does this sound repetitive? I wanted to communicate before suddenly I’m unable.
Does this sound repetitive? I’ll end it here. I wanted to communicate before suddenly I’m unable.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I’ll end it here with how you can support me while I’m down, only able to and wish to (I’m aware financial situations are a big struggle at the moment, there is no pressure to.)
Provide support by these links:
Thank you for reading until the end; have an awesome week ahead. Please remember to hydrate and eat. 🫶🏽❤️‍🩹

By and large, the Buddy Daddies fandom has been great with the interpretation of Kazuki and Rei as being Queerplatonic and/or Platonic Life Partners. And as someone who is aroace, I am deeply happy and grateful for this, because far too often aspec based interpretations of queerness in fandom spaces are met with ridicule, flippant attitudes, or even downright hostility (ex. calling people homophobic for viewing queer characters as aspec instead of gay or lesbian, etc.).
Of course, every fandom has its bad apples. Here is an example of aphobia:
Tumblr media
The tweet reads: The fact that Kazuki and Rei of Buddy Daddies share a bank account like...I know what you are what you are  🏳️‍🌈 I will not accept “queer platonic” fics and headcanons when Kazuki is very obviously Rei’s wife.
This person is making it very clear, by putting queer platonic in quotation marks, that they view this interpretation of Rei and Kazuki as not only wrong, but also as lesser than viewing them as a romantic and sexual gay relationship.
This is what aphobia looks like in fandom spaces. I’ve seen it in, I believe, every fandom that I’ve been in (except The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself, iirc). People will mock or look down on the idea and concept of things like queerplatonic relationships or platonic life partners and state that the concepts sound like “just friends.” I’ve been harassed by someone and called a ch*ld pr*dator simply for making aspec based headcanons about fictional teen characters, and, like I mentioned above, I’ve been called homophobic and lesbophobic for daring to view some characters as being aspec instead of gay or lesbian.
Stuff like this may seem like not a big deal at the end of the day, since they aren’t huge injustices or anything like that, but stuff like this is still invalidating and can still sting. The Buddy Daddies fandom as a whole has been a hugely welcoming fandom in regards to aspec interpretations of the characters, and I love that! <3 It makes me feel safe and accepted, which is rare, because aspec voices and interpretations are usually mocked, ignored, or greeted with hostility in fandom spaces.
So, all I ask is, if you see aphobic stuff like this happening in the Buddy Daddies fandom, please do anything BUT encourage it. Shut it down, ignore it, block. Anything like that is fine. Shipping Kazuki and Rei romantically and/or sexually is totally fine. I don’t mind that interpretation in the least and wouldn’t be upset if the series did end up going in that direction either.
But there is a reason a lot of aspec fans are flocking to this series, and that’s because this is such a good depiction of what a queerplatonic and/or platonic life partner partnership would look like. I don’t know. I know this likely isn’t the intention of the creators, specifically, since they just wanted to explore the themes of found family and a same-sex couple raising a child together, but it really does feel like being seen. I would want to live with a partner in a very similar way as Kazuki and Rei (minus the child, personally, lol), so seeing it normalized here and not being the constant butt of “are they gay?” or “no homo” or “we’re just friends” type of jokes and clarifications is so refreshing and validating.
Anyway, yeah, seeing that tweet just made me so...tired. I’m so tired of seeing aphobia in fandom spaces and it being treated as a big deal or not a big thing. So I figured I’d make this post to just let people know about the aspect experience a bit.
Finally, just to clarify, this isn’t meant to be a discourse post or anything of that like. More of just a general awareness post of “Hey, see this? Not cool, and here is why.” type of thing. But, I love and adore the Buddy Daddies fandom and just want to continue seeing it be such a warm fandom space for aspec fans. <3

Quick blog PSA:
I actively try to exercise discretion when liking or commenting on others posts. Especially personal ones that may show parts or all of a persons body. It is not my intent to come across as creepy or flirting and I don’t wish to make anyone uncomfortable.
My intention it to express support and appreciation for artistic expression and the self confidence it takes to be willing to share images of one’s self, and nothing more.
If anyone feels uncomfortable with any likes or comments please let me know and I’ll be happy to not engage.

Some ppl in this fandom are gonna go into shock when they find out characters can be multifaceted with several different core motives and fears and needs and wants etc etc and that there is, in fact, nothing wrong with analyzing multiple possibilities for scenes and dialogue choices bc it is in fact “that deep”

Filtering tags/post content
I'm sure plenty of people do this already, but I've come across a lot of folks who have no idea that you can filter out certain tags, or even words that are included in posts on Tumblr.
This feature, along with blocking and the Blog Subscriptions tab (you have to turn this on in Labs, under settings), honestly make Tumblr usable for me.
I don't even filter out a lot of serious things that legitimately bother me. Mostly I filter things like discourse, shows, ships, or certain characters that I see a LOT on my dash and just have no interest in. I don't hate these things, necessarily, but the little box that appears in their place, telling me I have this thing filtered, is so much easier to scroll past than a whole post where I have to waste time determining what it's even about before I decide that I want to skip it.
One of the best things about the filtering system is that, with one click, I can still see whatever post is filtered, like so:
Tumblr media
In addition, say you have someone blocked, but you still see folks on your dash reblogging their stuff? If you add their username to your filtered post content (I also add it to tags just to really cover my bases), then voila! You just get a little box that's nice and easy to scroll past.
I don't spend a lot of time on Tumblr, so the filter tools and blog subscriptions tab make what time I do spend a lot more worth my while.
Filtered tags and filtered post content are both in settings, under 'content you see.' That's on desktop, anyway, but mobile is probably similar. Just keep in mind that Tumblr tends to go a little overboard with filtering post content. For example, if your filtered phrase contains some common words, you might notice that half the posts on your dash are filtered, so you'll have to change the filter in settings.
Anyway, I highly recommend it just to make your Tumblr browsing easier and more pleasant. ✌😌
