It was a dark morning, the sky still blue, a few clouds covering the still visible stars. The air smelled like rain, a heavy smell his pack mate would love. Swiss was strolling through the ministry garden. He was dressed in a pair of black sweatpants and a shirt he stole from Aether some weeks ago. Smokie; Swiss had heard a few songs before, but Aether was the only one to listen to their songs frequently and to own a shirt of that band; that belonged to Swiss for now.
In the distance he heard a raven calling for its mate, at least it sounded like it. He stopped and listened. It was not the first time he heard the raven calling, but he never thought much about it until now. His tail was thumping softly against his left leg as he stood there and just listened. It reminded him of the late night talks he sometimes had with Omega, the former bandghoul had the same problem with sleep as he and would wander through the dark corridors at times everyone else would already be in the lands of dreams. They were not close, but Omega had a fascination for this kind of thing. He once said that ravens kept their partners for a lifetime, that they got each others backs no matter what.
Swiss heard steps coming from behind and spun around. He thought it would be Rain or maybe Mountain, but the ghoul he was faced with was a bit more unusual, at least that was Swiss` opinion on that matter. Zephyr was someone he talked to a few times, but no deep conversations. Cumulus and Cirrus were talking to them more often, their shared element and also shared instruments gave them a bonding.
The older ghoul noticed Swiss and gave him a polite nod. They were leaning on a cane. A present of their pack a few years ago.
“Morning”, he greeted the airghoul back.
“Couldn‘t sleep?” The question came back and this time Swiss nodded.
The raven's call seemed near this time, and the multighoul spun around. There they were; two ravens, black as the darkest night, flying together over treetops. The sky was not as blue as before, its colour now a bit of lighter, framing the world in a tone, that reminded Swiss of ocean water.
“Omega told you about them?” He heard Zephyrs voice beside him now and turned his head to look at the other ghoul. They were playing with a few leaves, letting them fly through the air.
“Yeah”, he answered.
“Fascinating creatures”, Zephyr stated.
“Yeah.” It should have been awkward, the whole encounter felt awkward, but Swiss found himself liking the presence of the other one. They were quiet and while Swiss loved chaos, he needed to be quiet from time to time. And it amazed him how easily Zephyr controlled the air, his eyes drawn to the leaves as they slipped around. While being a multighoul, air was never his strongest element. Cirrus ones said it was because he was too quirky, and she was right.
“Try not to think about it”, Zephyr suddenly said, and Swiss gave them a confused look, which lead them to snicker. “I can practically hear your thoughts.”
Swiss blushed a bit and tried to bring himself to not watch the leaves in childlike amazement. He wanted to reach out his hand and try it too, but he did not want to embarrass himself, so he did not. Instead, he stayed quiet.
“How about you accompany the girls next time they visit me for tips?”, Zephyr offered then and turned around to leave. “They told me you want to control the air.”
“They are right”, Swiss said and watched them walking back, he now knew why the ghoulettes loved to go to Zephyr. They were calm, a constant. Something Swiss missed most of the time.
“I‘ll see you then.” The smile in their voice was obvious.
