Series 6 Post 14: Goddess and deified personification of victory in peace or war. She first appears during the first Punic War, seemingly as a Romanised re-naming of Nike, the goddess of victory associated with Rome's Greek allies in the Greek mainland and in Magna Graecia. Thereafter she comes to symbolise Rome's eventual hegemony and right to rule. She is a deified abstraction, entitled to cult but unlike Nike, she has virtually no mythology of her own.

🌸 She was worshipped in Magna Graecia and mainland Greece, and was a subject of Greek myth. Around this time, various Roman war-deities begin to receive the epithet victor (conqueror) or invictus (unconquered). 🌸 Other images show her as human-sized, driving a triumphal war-chariot, or in free-standing statuary, standing on the right-hand palm of a much larger figure, typically Rome's supreme god, Jupiter, or war-god Mars, or Roma, divine personification of the Roman state. 🌸 Winged figures, very often in pairs, representing victory and referred to as winged victories, are common in Roman official iconography, typically hovering high in a composition, and often filling spaces in spandrels or other gaps in architecture. These represent the "spirit of victory" rather than a full-blown deity. Pairs of winged victories continued to appear after the Christianization of the Roman Empire and gradually evolved into depictions of Christian angels. 🌸 It was used to store war-booty, and it hosted the Magna Mater's statue while her own temple was under construction. Victoria had several other shrines throughout Rome. In Imperial era Timgad, victoria victrix (conquering victory) was given credit for Imperial successes.

Romulus and Remus were, according to the legend, the children of Mars, the Roman god of war. In the version of Plutarch said god raped the daughter of the dispossessed king Numitor, who had to abandon the twins resulting from that incident. The children were put into a wicker basket and set into the river Tiber, while their mother was put into jail. The basket stranded at the bank, a she-wolf heard the children cry and brought them to her cave where she nursed them. A woodpecker joined in feeding them until a shepherd of the new king, the one who dispossessed the old one, took them home with him to raise them as his and his wife‘s own. Long story short, one day Romulus and Remus had a fight with the shepherds of Numitor whom they managed to steal some cattle from. While Romulus was busy with a sacrifice, Remus was caught by these shepherds and brought to Numitor, whom he told what he knew about his and his brother‘s origin. Numitor sensed there was more to Remus‘ story and soon after Romulus was let in on their origin story by their adoptive father as well. He urged Romulus to go and free his brother but on his way to Numitor, Romulus was caught by the new king‘s men, whose name was Amulius, where he was tortured. He told Amulius just enough so that the latter asked Numitor if his two grandsons could still be alive. Today’s post is a slightly edited repost of the god Janus. The month of January was named for Janus and so it is only appropriate that we have a post about him for the first Sunday of the year. Janus is the Roman god of time. He has two faces and looks to the future and the past simultaneously. He presides over beginnings, endings, gateways, doorways, bridges, corridors, and change. He is believed to be one of the primordial gods or titans. When he is invoked, it is often done in association with another god such as Jupiter.
