since we're talking about call outs lately, i've been called out many times, most of which are made from lies and sometimes by altering screenshots, but the most effective call out i ever got was like, in early 2015 there was a tumblr user everyone knew was a terf, but she would say "actually i support trans women" this was before crypto terfs were as talked about so the language wasn't really there to say "hey this person is a crypto terf." but yeah some people put posts of this woman on my dash and i made a random post on my blog "why do yall reblog her shes a terf" and of course she searches her own name daily, found my post, and replied to it that me calling her a terf was racist. that was it. no other interaction. but she went on all night talking about me being racist and just making things up as she went "oh i bet she says the n word all the time irl" kind of shit that had, like no basis? But her follower base took it 100% and i literally had thousands of anons telling me to kill myself, trying to goad me into being racist (didnt work), and the most concerning thing was i got hundreds of anons being like "what was the point of doing hrt if you still look like that, you should kill yourself." It was like, violent and overwhelming. and on top of it I'd get random young teenager trans people who followed her and bought into her bioessentialism showing up in my messages being like "you give trans people a bad name" "you're why transphobia exists" etc etc it was fucking crazy.
but i lost like, no followers because everyone around me understood, this woman was a terf. this all set up the real one though.
later in the year a teenage "communist" trans girl made some snarky comment about me being racist on a post of mine blowing up. i ignored her cuz like, who cares it's just some random teenager. but i guess people were looking for a reason to hate me cuz that blew up, lots of people just took that at face value no need to investigate. when someone finally did send the girl an ask being like "hey how is she racist" she replied "I dont remember but I know she is" and even more people just took this as 100%. the thing is, i do remember her being one of those "you make trans people look bad" terf following young trans people, it's not that she didn't remember, it's that she didnt want to admit she followed a terf and she believed a terf just saying shit. I lost like 3/4s of my followers, i had a lot of people i thought were my friends just stop talking to me, and going forward every time i got a call out there would usually be a line of like "also she's racist, everyone already knows this" all cuz this girl needed to make a snarky comment cuz she just loves terfs.
the thing about the "i dont remember" bit is it made some weird game of telephone. "I dont remember" became "oh she's racist, i think she says the n word" which became "she called black bloggers the n word" like people just made shit up about me and connected it to this call out. and when id be like this isnt true id be met with a "this is just known, youre a known racist" and it's like, to this day i will still find people be like "hey good on you for growing as a person and not doing that any more" and its like I NEVER DID IT TO BEGIN WITH

I got a comment over a week ago, they're blocked now, but they said "you know that most of the countries you're hyping up are Muslim, they kill gay people" I said name me one country that is 100%, completely safe for us, also that isnotreal is murdering Queer Palestinians so don't act like they're safe for us, they replied that "most European countries, north america, south america are gay friendly", which... I beg to differ, but alright, and I didn't say "gay friendly" I said safe, there's a big difference. A place may be gay friendly but is it Trans friendly? Does every Queer person have rights? Have protections? Are Disabled Queer people safe and have legal rights? Are QTBIPOC safe and have legal rights? Can non-monogamous people get married and/or have legal protections? Are we safe from hate crimes? Here in the U.S our rights are actively being taken away, police were raiding gay bars in Seattle last month. This shit is not safe for us here so why should we treat other countries differently? Especially countries that are being GENOCIDED!! People are being tortured and murdered and displaced and you think right now is when we should be caring whether or not gay people are accepted there???
When I told them I'm part Lebanese (which isnotreal is also bombing) and to keep their Islamophobia to themselves they said something stupid I literally laughed when I read it and immediately blocked them.
I will not take any of this shit on my page so don't waste your time you'll just be blocked.

what is “what happens next” about if you don’t mind me asking? :)
i've been sitting on this ask for a while now because WHERE! DO I! BEGIN!!!!
ok. so. what happens next is a currently ongoing webcomic by max graves, beginning late in 2021. it is a story told in multiple chapters about multiple characters, but one could argue that its protagonist is milo holliday. milo is a trans man, pastel blogger, toy customizer... and accomplice to a murder.
one of the first panels of the comic is a screenshot of the dni page on milo's tumblr, which got me IMMEDIATELY interested in the comic because it's such a unique way of storytelling:
Tumblr media
[image description available for the above]
and we get a lot more pages like this that are screenshots of websites, social media profiles, and the like. the comic is a mixture of in-person interactions, online communication, and occasional flashbacks, all of which are important pieces of the story.
so when they were teenagers, milo's best friend griffin petty killed two people, and milo helped mutilate one of the bodies. while griffin was sent to prison, milo spent years in a psychiatric institution that stunted his emotional growth and forever altered his view of the world. a drawing he makes while institutionalized provides a window into milo's perceptions of the event:
Tumblr media
[image description available for the above]
the whole comic is an uncomfortably accurate reflection of mid-2010s tumblr culture, right down to the sanrio traumacore and crytyping. milo's suffering is multifaceted: in reference to the people harassing him online, he says "it doesn't feel like they hate me for what i did... it feels like they hate me for the way i am," referring to his being an autistic trans man. and given that many of his detractors seem to come from sites like kiwifarms (notorious for its transphobia and ableism), he isn't entirely wrong! but at the same time, his relentless depictions of himself as the victim erase his contributions to haylie's death and the ways he's made himself and others' problems worse.
not every part of the comic is about milo, though! i'm only scratching the surface of it here: all of those pages and links are for the first part, titled "dog names." in the second part, "someone else," we're introduced to gage ludemann, a gore blogger and true crime fan who has entered a long-distance relationship with griffin, and once again, screenshots are used to masterful effect:
Tumblr media
[image description available for the above]
but screenshots and characters' drawings are one thing, and max's art is another. starting in the third part, "no matter what," panels are shown in full color, and his color choices are great. what i really love, though, is the amount of detail max puts into character design and facial expressions. i could show you so many different panels that i think show off max's art, but i'll try to narrow it down to one:
Tumblr media
[image description available for the above]
soooo yeah!! i have SO MANY THOUGHTS about this webcomic and i keep trying to get close friends to read it, haha. i've read a lot of webcomics and i can say with certainty that there is NOTHING out there quite like what happens next. it's a story about true crime fanaticism, psychological trauma, social media presences, existing as a transgender person, and so much more. the comic is currently on its fifth part, "you'll all be sorry," which seems to be about the characters vikki escamilla and xandra blumberg. if you decide to check it out please feel free to tell me all about it! i'm not connected to the comic at all, but i really love it and i think everything about it is just fascinating.
and max graves, if you're somehow reading this... hiiiiii i'm a huge fan!!! love your work!!! i hope i've represented it at least somewhat accurately here!

Image description: [Screenshots of pages from Brilliant Imperfection by Eli Clare. Text reads:
Your Suicide Haunts me.
Bear, it’s been over a decade since you killed yourself, and still I want to howl. I feel anguish and rage rattling down at the bottom of my lungs, pressing against my rib cage. If ever my howling erupts, I will take it to schoolyards and churches, classrooms and prisons, homes where physical and sexual violence lurk as common as mealtime. I know many of us need to wail. Together we could shatter windows, bring bullies and perpetrators to their knees, stop shame in its tracks.
Once a week, maybe once a month, I learn of another suicide. They’re friends of friends, writers and dancers who have bolstered me, activists I’ve sat in meetings with, kids from the high school down the road, coworkers and acquaintances, news stories and Facebook posts. They’re queer, trans, disabled, chronically ill, youth, people of color, poor, survivors of abuse and violence, homeless. They’re too many to count.
Bear, will you call their names with me? It’s become a queer ritual, this calling of the names—all those dead of AIDS and breast cancer, car accidents and suicide, hate violence and shame, overdoses and hearts that just stop beating. The names always begin wave upon wave, names filling conference halls, church basements, city parks. Voices call one after another, overlapping, clustering, then coming apart, a great flock of songbirds, gathering to fly south, wheeling and diving—this cloud of remembrance. Then quiet. I think we’re done, only to have another voice call, then two, then twenty. We fill the air for thirty minutes, an hour, a great flock of names. Tonight, will you sit with me? Because, Bear, I can’t sleep.
I remember your smile, your kindness, your compassionate and fierce politics. I remember our long e-mail conversations about being disabled and trans. I remember a brilliant speech you gave at True Spirit, a trans gathering in Washington, DC. I remember you telling me about how you’d disappear for months at a time when your life became grim, how you’d do anything not to go to a psych hospital again. I remember your handsome Black queer trans disabled working-class self. And then, you were gone.
The details of your death haunt me. You had checked yourself in. You were on suicide watch. I imagine your desperation and suffering. I know racism, transphobia, classism colluded. The nurses and aides didn’t follow their own protocols, not bothering to check on you every fifteen minutes. You were alive and sleeping at 5:00 a.m. and dead at 7:00 a.m.; at least that’s what their records say. Did despair clog your throat, panic coil in your intestines? In those last moments, what lingered on your tongue? I know about your death as fleetingly as your life.
Bear, I’d do almost anything to have you alive here and now, anything to stave off your death. But what did you need then? Drugs that worked? A shrink who listened and was willing to negotiate the terms of your confinement with you? A stronger support system? An end to shame and secrecy? As suffering and injustice twisted together through your body-mind, what did you need?
I could almost embrace cure without ambivalence if it would have sustained your life. But what do I know? Maybe your demons, the roller coaster of your emotional and spiritual self, were so much part of you that cure would have made no sense. You wrote not long before your death, “In a world that separates gender, I have found the ability to balance the blending of supposed opposites. In a world that demonizes non-conformity, I have found the purest spiritual expression in celebrating my otherness.”
Yes, Bear. I know that truth. Your otherness was a beautiful braid— your hard-earned trans manhood looping into your Black self, wrapped in working-class smarts and resilience, woven into disability, threaded with queerness. I saw you last in an elevator at True Spirit. You told me that you were spending the weekend hanging out with trans men of color. I can still see your gleeful smile, sparkling eyes.
Friend, what would have made your life possible with all its aches and sorrows? I ask as someone who has gripped the sheer cliff face of suicide more than once. Calling the names exhausts me. Your death exhausts me. The threat, reality, fact of suicide exhausts me. Its arrival on the back of shame and isolation exhausts me. Bear, will you come sit beside me tonight? I’m too exhausted to sleep.]
From Brilliant Imperfection: Grappling with Cure by Eli Clare, pages 63-64.
This passage has stuck with me since I first read it and I find myself returning over and over, especially in the times I want to be gentle to my grief.
Thought I'd share it with you all right now <3

Apologies for the long rant. I usually try not to get caught up in her shit but JK Rowling denying trans people were targeted by Nazis is really beyond the pale.
Maybe it's my German ancestry and knowing where this leads, but the ease with which her and the people commenting on her post twist the holocaust, if not outright deny it or say it was 'good' because the 'right people' were targeted, is chilling. How she doesn't see the company she keeps and get a wake-up call is a massive indictment on her character.
And make no mistake that she is engaging in anti-semitism - she may not at this point deny that Jewish people were targeted but she is encouraging that her followers begin to question the official narrative of the holocaust - if a small part of the narrative is successfully undermined (such as trans people being targeted), then it becomes significantly easier for people to begin to deny more and more aspects. The people you see in her comments denying the holocaust entirely had to start somewhere - and we have all seen how the overton window moves from wedges and dog whistles to open hate.
This is a rare example of speech I would consider truly dangerous. If forgetting history makes you doomed to repeat it what does willful denial mean?
She should try going to the holocaust memorial in Berlin and reading the names of those murdered. It's several walls of names in small font. Every one a person with a life, friends, family, love, interests, every one brutalized and tragically killed. Those names don't magically change to fit your beliefs. They don't become any less dead because you found an unsourced twitter thread that confirms your bias. If your reaction is denial, even just for one small group targeted, then I and any other rational person will be denying your humanity.
***
For what it's worth, her response so far seems to be the claim that accusations of Holocaust denial are a way of attempting to "chill speech". At a time when anti-Semitism is a serious concern for Jewish people the world over, and transphobia too has risen and both already claimed countless lives in recent years, her response to (fully accurate) accusations as serious as Holocaust denial is to make herself out to be the victim. Take some personal responsibility, Mr Galbraith, any one of us would be catching flack for something so heinous.

I may be a little too deep in the brainrot but hear me out about this Hazbin Hotel AU idea-
It kinda spawned from a few other sinner!Adam AUs I've seen, but because I'm me I had to make it ✨trans✨. It started with my brain imagining Adam with gender euphoria bc of facial hair, and spiralled into, well, this...
--
Consider: Adam respawns as a sinner, and on top of all the other changes (goat ears and small goat horns, raven wings the colour of an oil spill, hooves instead of feet) he finds himself in a female body. The dysphoria is intense, even his voice sounds wrong to his own ears. He doesn't know where to go (all the people he knows would only want to kill him again), and ends up wandering, seeing the worst of hell as someone homeless. He dies more than once, but regenerating doesn't change his body. The worst of the dysphoria comes from other people, the way they talk to him and about him, the way they act towards him. He starts to talk less and less, hating the sound of his voice.
Eventually he stumbles upon Valentino. The deal he makes is one for protection, but knowing more than the average fresh sinner, he is very specific about details. Demons are not to be trusted, after all. He works for Valentino for protection and a place to stay, but maintains his soul and ability to back out of the contract.
He never introduces himself as Adam, no one knows him as such, and no matter what he says about being a man, Valentino never sees him as such. The overlord sees Adam and assumes he is a butch lesbian (given the masculine clothing choice (perpetual dysphoria hoodies and sweatpants) and short hair, haphazardly cut with any available knife whenever it got too long for comfort). Adam of course doesn't help that assumption by being adamant (pun intended) that he's only attracted to women.
Regardless, he works for Valentino, and it doesn't take long for him to run into Angel Dust. Adam is almost always quiet, even around Angel, but they eventually start warming up to each other. Angel immediately believes Adam when he says he's not a woman, and that relief is enough for Adam to start trusting Angel. It helps, of course, that Adam's power is related to names. He sees the true name of every sinner floating by their head, the handwriting symbolic of their personalities. Above Angel's head, in elegant, swoopy letters, is the name Anthony.
"You're Anthony, right?" "What- How did you know that?" "I- uhh... it says. Above your head." Angel is quiet for a moment, and then carefully asks, "Does it say anything above your head?"
Adam admits, truthfully, that there is no name above his own head. Still scared to admit his identity, he picks "Dee" as a temporary name (and definitely a reference to his title as Dickmaster).
And so Anthony and Dee become friends. Angel tells his friends at the hotel about his new coworker and friend, and they get progressively closer, bonding over queer experience and working under Val. With Anthony's help, Dee slowly starts to properly deconstruct his beliefs about... well, practically everything.
Anthony gets him his first binder to help with dysphoria (though he can only wear it when they're chilling with just the two of them, to be sure Val doesn't catch on) and they hang out together watching movies and talking. Adam is still quiet, but comes out of the shell he'd stuffed himself in over the past months, slowly but surely.
Angel can see that Dee isn't happy working for Val, doing it out of necessity far more so than enjoyment. So he suggests an alternative: the hotel. Escaping Val would mean Dee could actually attempt to transition, without having the dysphoria of being constantly misgendered by almost everyone around him. The hotel would keep him safe, even from Val, who would not be happy to have one of his new toys quit after gaining a following.
After some consideration, Adam accepts. He lets his hair grow out a little, hoping to not be recognised by anyone staying at the hotel. This, of course, wouldn't last. Though I'm not sure exactly how it would go down, Lucifer would be the one to first recognise him. Maybe once he's been on T for a short while, and his voice starts to drop. He slowly starts sounding and looking more like himself.
I'd love for this to end with Adamsapple because I love them sm, but I didn't think quite that far ahead, this really was just the brainrot of a few hours on the train with nothing but my thoughts and some music lmao.
Feel free to like, ask me more about this if you're interested? I don't rlly have a name for it, like, trans sinner Adam au?? idk
I apologise for my overuse of parentheses, and the probably somewhat incoherent rambling of... whatever this is. Just wanted to type out my thoughts :P

I had this idea for a musical.
I hate musicals.
But I had this idea for a high fantasy musical named Figwit. We open on a fantasy land, swoop with some crows towards a shiny Disney-esque castle then veer away to a huge, blackened, terrifying fortress in the mountains. A lovely young teenage girl (probably 13?) named Figwit skips through the fortress, saying hello to the living gargoyles, before she enters the tower at the top to visit her caretaker, Wik (properly named Wikai the Nightmare King, Plaguemaster, Born of Crows, Terror of the North). Wik is currently threatening someone via dark Zoom but turns to smile warmly and gently at Figwit before handing her a bauble and asking her to wait for a few minutes while he wraps up his call; the second she plops down on his towering, spiked throne, he turns back to the Zoom call and continues threatening them. Wikai the Nightmare King, btw, is played by Joey Batey in intense eyeliner and a spiky black coat.
Figwit is a bright, cheerful tween who’s prone to breaking into song (to Wik’s resignation, her magic means that he, also, gets to sing). She’s led a rather sheltered life in Wik’s castle -- he’s taught her how to visit people’s dreams, but in terms of actual social interaction she’s a bit limited -- and she’s curious about the outside world. Wik warns her that this land is infected with a mysterious blight that grows every year, birthing monsters in its wake. Figwit wonders what caused the blight, and Wik looks at her anxiously.
One day, Wik disappears along with all his stuff. After some anxiety and singing, Figwit decides to track him down and sets off with her favorite baby gargoyle perched on her shoulder.
Pretty quickly she meets Desmond, a knight, as he’s heroically fighting a monster in defense of several innocent travelers. Desmond (played by Sam Reid), is exactly what a knight in shining armor is supposed to be: blond, blue-eyed, honorable. Figwit admires him right away. Once the monster is dispatched, Figwit explains that she’s a princess (”Princess of what?” “Uhhh...*thinks about the big dark tower* that’s a secret.”) and Desmond explains that he’s on a quest to find the prince of this land. You see, the blight is tied to the royal line, which is withering. Ten years ago, the prince and princess were killed and their son kidnapped by forces unknown; the king grows old and as he does so, the spirit of the land sickens.
Blah blah blah, some plot happens here featuring bandits, Desmond and Figwit get captured and suddenly Wik appears, subjecting the bandits to their own worst nightmares. Figwit greets Wik joyously but the second he and Desmond see each other it’s like
Desmond: YOU
Wik: Y̴̮͎̞̜̼̻̘̲͚̻̺̖̰̍̒͊̏̑̃̃̋̇̋͐͠O̵̢̬͇̤͇̙̰̘̤̠̫̱̿̈́̄̂̎͛̎̇̍̄̕͠U̴̡͕͉͎͓̗̣͉̺̱̼̻̓̆͛̍̂̐̅̀͋̐̕͝
They’ve been fighting each other for years, because Wik is the prime suspect in the murder of the prince and princess and the kidnapping of their son. The penny drops and Figwit reveals that she’s trans -- she is the prince of this land. Wik murdered her parents. He flinches away from her horrified gaze, then smirks and points at her expression. “That face. That’s my nightmare.” He portals away again.
I’m not sure exactly how the rest of the plot goes. The blight is revealed to be nightmare goo that Wik has lost control of -- or given up control of, rather, because he wanted to be a good father to Figwit rather than a monstrous captor. Figwit’s grandfather does misgender her ruthlessly and guilt-trips her to detransitioning; Wik sees her dressed as a boy and tears up immediately in horror. Desmond reveals that he is actually Figwit’s biodad: he had an anguished crush on the prince, who was too bound up in honor and duty to reciprocate, but when the prince figured out he was infertile he asked Desmond to get his wife pregnant -- again, duty to the land and continuation of the line, blah blah blah. The stress of detransitioning and being misgendered causes Figwit to have a breakdown and enter her villain era, when she gets consumed by the blight and turns into a fucking dragon. Desmond and Wik bond over being shitty and/or absentee fathers before buckling down and going to save their daughter. The power of love, but more importantly the power of not inviting your nightmares to live in you constantly, saves the day. Wik and Desmond smooch a little?? Figwit becomes a knight-princess and goes out to live in the land rather than a silly castle.

People trying to use the LGBTQ+ community as a reason not to support Palestine is disgusting. The way they say this with their whole chest as if they think that's an actual, valid excuse as to why you shouldn't support innocents being carpet bombed is diabolical.
"You'd get stoned if you went to Palestine!!" Do you realise how out of touch and delusional you sound? Where did you get this information from? Where are the statistics and data charts to prove it? Or is this just a racist assumption that you've created based on your views of Muslims, Arabs and Middle Eastern countries? Homophobic people live and thrive in every single country, no matter how progressive they claim to be.
When the news of October 7th first came out and Zionists were rushing over to me with this excuse, I said "why is that relevant?" Now that I am more educated on the matter and history, I see people still using this excuse and now I ask "why is that relevant?" Stop using our name in vain. Stop pretending that you actually care about us. What you are doing and saying is not only hurting and further isolating the Palestinians and their suffering, it is also making our community more vulnerable to hate and bigotry as you are making it seem that all queer people care about is ourselves and our comfortability.
There are multiple counter arguments to this. I've picked a handful of them to share with you.
Palestine doesn't have a government. I don't know where people got this idea that they do, but they don't. (To my knowledge from my own research) They have (had) systems and groups and organisations but they don't, and since occupation, have never had a legitimate government with different political groups that you can democratically vote for. There is the PA (Palestinian Authority) that holds some power in the West Bank, but they can't actually do anything and most of the Palestinians who live there say that they are a burden. ("What about Hamas- not a political group). So please explain to me how they are supposed to make pro-queer and trans laws if they don't have a government? Also, and I can't stress this enough, people are not their governments. To all the countries that say they stand with Israel, there are hundreds of thousands of people saying no we don't. Rishi Sunak, prime minister of the UK, stated that he stands with Israel and that he is going to send them aid to help them fight back and defend themselves. A week later, 500,000 people showed up in London to protest for a ceasefire and the rights and freedom of Palestinians. If you actually spent two seconds to listen to stories of queer people/couples that have visited the West Bank you will hear that to some, this was their most welcoming and accepting experience abroad, and to all, there was not a moment they felt scared or ashamed.
Is that really what they're meant to be prioritising right now? The comfort and safety of an American twink? The entrance to Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest hospital in Gaza which is holding reportedly 30,000 people who are injured or displaced, was bombed by Israeli airplanes, killing 15 and injuring 60. Two other hospitals holding thousands of people also experienced bombing around them. They have bombed bakeries, schools, refugee camps, one of the oldest standing churches in the world, as well as over 50% of all residential buildings and many, many more places. The death toll has risen to almost 10,000 including 4,000 children, and this isn't even including people who weren't killed by bombing. Israel has dropped more than 18,000 tonnes of explosives on Gaza, an area that is only 41km long and 6-12km wide. They had to use ice cream trucks to hold dead bodies because of how stuffed the morgues were, but now, their dead are being buried in mass graves where they are forced to preform improper funeral rituals. They have run out of food, water, clothes, medical supplies. Doctors are having to preform surgeries using an iPhone flashlight because electricity has been shut off. Doctors are having to use vinegar as antiseptics because they've run out. People are forced to get medical procedures done, to GIVE BIRTH, without any pain-killers. But yes, of course, while Israel is using white phosphorous bombs on them they are supposed to be thinking about what they can do to better their society.
There are queer Palestinians living in Gaza right now, and they are experiencing the exact same thing non-queer Palestinians are. Israel is not prioritising them, they are not making their bombs so they can detect who's gay so the bombs can avoid them, they are not moving them out of Gaza and to a 5-star hotel somewhere safer. Israel's aim is to eradicate ALL Palestinians. This includes the queer ones. And they are crawling and screaming and begging, bloodied and bruised, for you to listen to them and support them and help them, yet you turn a blind eye and cover your ears while continuing to yell about the rights and lives of queer people.
Who told you that Israel is a queer friendly country with queer friendly laws? The Jerusalem Post, a news outlet in Israel, reported that in 2022 anti-queer hate crimes increased by 11% since 2021. Here is the link, which provides more information on homophobic crimes in Israel in 2022. Israel hasn't legalised gay marriage or gay adoption and a survey done in 2023 shows that 43% of Israelis strongly oppose gay marriage. What part of that is queer friendly? What part of that screams "gay haven"?
Pinkwashing has been used for decades to try and justify the genocide in Palestine. Don't let it get to you. Your activism shouldn't be conditional. If you actually think that bringing queer progressiveness into a conversation about colonisation and genocide is appropriate and a good thing, you should be thoroughly ashamed. Free Palestine means freeing ALL Palestinians.

Part 5: “It sure is exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero”: Should We Even Care?
Note: this is a part of my essay "The Awkward Meta-Tragedy of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman", see [here] for the masterpost of all links, reading order, and content warnings.
Now, of course, thus far I’ve been discussing events as if we’re meant to be at least somewhat sad that Morpheus apparently dies at the end, and especially sad if he died by suicide.  However, upon my reread of the comics in preparation for writing this essay, I hit a bit of a snag.  Are we even supposed to like him enough to care?
It seems like Morpheus is supposed to be a likeable, if SEVERELY flawed, protagonist up until around Brief Lives.  Even though he sentenced an ex-girlfriend to 10,000 years in Hell unjustly, a huge point was that he was changing; he had the character development to realize his error and set things right in Season of Mists.  But then, in Brief Lives, we get his romance with the witch Thessaly, and the sympathetically-portrayed goddess Ishtar openly accusing him of misogyny.  And as of The Kindly Ones, if you consider his arc to be a straightforward suicide, you have him willingly letting his own subjects get slaughtered just so he can end himself.
Now, Thessaly is unpopular, at least among the current tumblr crowd, because she’s apparently transphobic and her actions lead to the death of a well-liked and heroically portrayed trans character.  This has led to the semi-meme of “Thessaly is a TERF.”  However, that’s far too simplistic a way to describe how terrible she is.  She’s the epitome of the immoral immortal, living out of spite and anger rather than actual love for life, killing for fun, and putting her own interests above everyone else’s.  She’s a thoroughly unpleasant, violent, hateful person; even if she were written without the transphobia she would not be easy to cheer for.
And according to Lucien, Morpheus may have been deeply in love with her.
Well, Luce doesn’t say that in so many words, but he does state that Morpheus’ mourning when Thessaly dumps him is far more extreme, intense, and different from all of Morpheus’ other dramatic breakups.  He even states that Morpheus is being more intense about it than when Calliope left him in the wake of their son’s death!  A breakup after a couple-months fling hit him harder than a divorce of a decades-long marriage spurred by the tragedy of losing a child.  She meant that much to him.  Thankfully Merv is there to rebut Lucien’s observations, complaining that Morpheus “does this every time” there’s a breakup, but the reader is seriously left to question who to believe—the loveable but ditzy Merv, or the Dreaming’s head librarian and Morpheus’ closest confidant.
If Morpheus was the most heartbroken ever over someone who’s basically a serial killer only out for her own gain, who he likely knew about going into the relationship, that doesn’t reflect well on his character at all.  His punishment of the serial killers at the Cereal Convention comes across as arbitrary and hypocritical, for sure.  It makes one wonder why he’d admonish Hob for getting into the slave trade (pre-character-development, no less!), if his own girlfriend is just as likely to use people in horrific ways.  Why would he be so broken up over killing Vortexes if one of his closest associates is downright eager to kill in the name of self-preservation?  Is it just “opposites attract” but written poorly?
(Actually I could go on and on about how women in The Kindly Ones, Thessaly included, are prime examples of “women being obviously written by a straight white man”—the man in question being generally progressive doesn’t mean he’s immune to the occasional iffy writing—and how questionable their portrayals as characters are, but that’s beyond the scope of this essay.  It’s also likely an artifact from these books being from the 80s-90s and then-progressive tropes from that era not aging well.  For now, let’s just say that I side-eye that the evil immortal human just happens to be the female one while the good immortal human is male, and that the major forces that end up killing Morpheus/facilitating his suicide are all female…)
Ishtar straight up accuses Morpheus of being sexist towards women when he confronts her over the whereabouts of Destruction.  And, well, his treatment of his ex-girlfriends certainly doesn’t point towards him being respectful to them at least.  He cruelly discarded Alianora to live on a skerry when he tired of her, in addition to the infamous sentencing of Nada to hell.  The official analysis book The Sandman Companion even went so far as to suggest that Madoc’s treatment of Calliope was also indicative of Morpheus’ treatment of her during their marriage, with Morpheus also callously using her as inspiration for his dream-creations.  However, since Calliope herself emphatically says otherwise, I consider the Companion analysis to be near-offensively wrong and seriously question the other analyses in that book as a result (it was not written by Gaiman, for those wondering).  Morpheus also sure seems to send his inspirational abilities primarily towards male authors, but then again there’s not a large sample size in the text.  Besides Lady Bast and Mad Hettie (both of whom are notably portrayed as old/past their prime), the only women he seems to care about are either ones he’s related to, or ones he can sleep with, and in the case of the second category things go badly once he tires of sleeping with them (or if they refuse him, yikes).  One could easily argue towards Book!Morpheus being a canon misogynist, at least by 2020s standards.
(Another side note here: Thank GOD the live action adaptation made Lucien a woman.  Dream’s relationship with Lucienne finally portrays him as having a, for the most part, mutually respectful, presumably non-sexual, relationship with a woman who is neither related to him nor portrayed as old or undesirable.  Show!Dream might, just might, be able to respect women beyond the ability to sleep with them.)
And then there’s the sequence where The Kindly Ones rampage through the Dreaming on their way to the palace, brutally slaughtering all the whimsical denizens we’ve come to know and love throughout the story’s run.  If one assumes that Morpheus intentionally invoked their wrath in order to die, that means he facilitated all of their suffering on purpose.  Once again this paints him as a massive hypocrite; if seeing his realm in tatters after his imprisonment was so painful for him, why tear it all down on purpose?  Of course, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” shows that he isn’t always aware of what consequences his actions might have, so maybe it somehow slipped his mind that this would be the consequence of his plan.
Um, anyways, what was I saying?  Oh yeah, so, Morpheus’ intense relationship with one of the least likeable characters, along with his general misogynist and jerkass behavior, especially strains potential reader sympathy for him, painting him as a hypocrite regarding his unambiguously heroic moments—which were already few and far between overall.  Then again, perhaps it is wrong to judge him as a “hypocrite” when he isn’t even human.  We don’t judge dolphins for the ways they treat other dolphins, after all. (They’re quite violent: look it up.)  Even though they’re intelligent and sentient and it’s unethical to keep them in a fishbowl, they’re so separate from humans that imposing any sort of human motivations to their actions is a failure.
But yet, this series is a book intended for an audience of humans, so the human reader’s perspective IS important regarding Morpheus’ actions.  Regardless of whether he or the other Endless “should” be subject to modern moral standards is irrelevant to how we’re supposed to perceive them as subjects of the texts, especially when the culmination of the whole story is one of them dying.  The line between tragedy and comedy might lie solely in the audience’s perception of a character.
There’s also the matter of narrative satisfaction.  If Morpheus is meant to be a villain, completely self-disposing villain isn’t satisfying, no matter how unsympathetic they might be to the audience.  Imagine if Palpatine just offed himself, with no intervention at all from Luke or Vader!  What would be the point of the story then?  If Morpheus is intentionally unsympathetic, is this some kind of meta ploy about storytelling expectations?  Like, we expect a sympathetic (if flawed) protagonist due to the first arc starting with him torturously imprisoned, but then he’s actually a complete villain protagonist?  Or, we expect to be cheering for him to change, but we end up cheering for him to die instead?  Is this an early case of the “subverting expectations” type twists where the only point is playing the audience?  (Admittedly, a work with such strong metafictional themes might be one of the few places where such subversions might be justified rather than contrived.)
Are we supposed to be glad Morpheus dies and is replaced, because he was what we might consider “an asshole”?  Are we supposed to be sad, because his more humanlike and relatable traits contributed to his downfall, and we see ourselves in his plight?  Both?  Neither?
Honestly, I have no idea.
Likewise complicating matters of “should we care” are two scenes from The Wake.  One is Fiddler’s Green refusing Daniel’s offer of resurrection because “death is the only thing that gives life meaning” and the other is Lucien’s insistence that nobody has died besides a point of view, because Dream of the Endless is an idea and you cannot kill an idea.  While I suspect that Lucien’s statement is supposed to be taken optimistically, when paired with the former scene it comes across as callous towards the reader and edges close to “we shouldn’t care because they’re not human” territory.  If nothing has died besides a bad or flawed point of view, then why go through the trouble of asking the reader to ever care about Morpheus?  Were we supposed to be rooting against him all along?  Is he just supposed to be the “bad side” of Dream of the Endless?  Should we be celebrating because nothing of value was lost?
Is dying the only meaningful thing that Morpheus can even do, because it would make way for the positive Daniel to take over?

Hey can you point me to one of the places where JK Rowling said she wants trans people dead? I want it for reference and I’m having trouble finding anything
Lovely when people don’t understand political lobbying.
Why would she say that outright? Why would republicans say that outright? Why would anyone say they want trans people dead outright?
They wouldn’t and there is a reason for that. They want people to agree with them so they hide their true opinions behind political speech.
She calls us fake. She calls us not normal. She treats us like we’re crazy to get everyone to believe that we are threatening a “way of life” or that we’re a danger to the status quo of the beliefs in a gender binary so that people start treating us like the enemy.
Then come the bills. Illegal to get gender affirming surgery. Unable to change our names or gender markers. No more doctors can assist us in getting gender affirming help like HRT. Drag starts getting attacked from the government. Edicts start getting put out like doctors getting fired or their licenses removed for helping trans people feel good about themselves or parents getting their children taken away for the perceived “abuse” of allowing their children to be themselves and supporting their transness.
And then it gets worse when no one stops these bills and eventually it becomes illegal to be trans in general. People get it in their heads that now that these bills exist, trans people are put on the chopping block more and more. People bully and assault us more than they already are. Trans lives are threatened and the government refuses to do anything because trans people are dangerous. More transpeople are killed in an alley or by police or just left without work and starved. And the government doesn’t do anything because the victims were trans and it inspires people to keep doing it because they won’t get in trouble for it or if they do, it’s a slap on the wrist.
I’ve been actively bullied by anti-trans rhetoric and anti-trans people since I was twelve purely because people think that it’s fake and that I’m lying to myself. I’ve been called disgusting names and been told to commit suicide and threatened with physical violence by people who support JK’s views. I’ve even been physically assaulted by TERFs who believe Rowling’s disgusting beliefs.
A good portion of all of this hate spiraled from perhaps the world’s most popular book author past her prime who couldn’t even write a good book who decided to speak out against us and has the influence, money, and popularity to be able to fund a lot of rallying against us and continues to do so to this day. And people justified her by defending her poorly written book series that’s riddled with problematic behavior and fortifies her understanding and world views while being defended by the world as if it’s the Bible.
She does not say she wants trans people dead with her words, she says it with her actions. Just like every other person that has ever wanted a certain marginalized people dead. Because if you say it, than you are speaking the truth of your own beliefs. And people don’t want to agree with you if you are outright saying you want genocide because that’s “not ok for people to want”.
We’ve seen this before. Multiple times in human history. Propaganda, political rallying, and funding hateful people is where it begins. And if you can’t see it, you’re drinking just as much of her kool-aid as the rest of the trans exclusionary radical feminist movement and you’re truly deluded if you think that’s not where all of this is headed.

"being a woman is simply a biological state of being". Hmm, where have I heard that before? Oh, I know: from men who wanted to claim women had a biological disposition towards illiteracy. From men who treat women like breeding bags. Men who tell a women her place is the kitchen. Men who would jail and torture trans women and lesbians alike. Men who would call *you* a freak as much as you call us freaks. You vomit men's words and pretend to support women. That is why you are fake.
from men who wanted to claim women had a biological disposition towards illiteracy.
So you agree: men discriminate against women on the basis of our sex. They knows that we are female and they are male, and they believe that makes us inferior, even though they are wrong. How can we combat misogyny if we won't acknowledge its origin?
From men who treat women like breeding bags.
So you agree. They know as females we are the sex capable of giving birth and as males they are the sex capable of impregnating, and they believe that makes being pregnant our obligation, even though they are wrong. How can we combat misogyny if we won't acknowledge its origin?
Men who tell a women her place is the kitchen.
So you agree: men discriminate against women on the basis of our sex. Men believe because we are female, we are biologically predisposed to give birth and take care of the house, even though they are wrong. How can we combat misogyny if we won't acknowledge its origin?
Men who would jail and torture trans women and lesbians alike.
Not alike. I have nothing inherently in common with any trans woman beyond us both claiming the term "woman", which means nothing. You know what I have in common with every trans man? Being female. You know what I have in common with every lesbian? Being a homosexual female. Men torture and jail each other all the time. Men torture and kill gay men. Does that render gay men women? No? Being abused by men does not make you a woman. To claim as much is to reduce womanhood to being hated by men, and that, my friend, is far more oppressive an idea that saying adult human females deserve a word to name our biological conditions, and that that word in English has always been "woman".
Men who would call you a freak as much as you call us freaks.
And why do they call me a freak? Because I am a female attracted exclusively to other females. Because of my biology. Name it.
I don't think trans people are freaks. I love gnc people. I support dysphoric people receiving the best possible chance at a happy life. There are absolutely trans people who live their lives without infringing on anybody else's freedom, and I would never call them freaks for being dysphoric or unconventional in any way. You know what makes you a freak? Thinking you're entitled to claim a lived experience that is not yours. Thinking you have a right to invade spaces that are not yours. Thinking heterosexual trans people have a right to homosexuals' sexual interest when it is not yours. Thinking you're entitled to walk all over women and homosexuals and then act like we're the bigots for telling you to back off. That makes you a fucking freak, freak.

Thought dump —I guess rant— prompted by the last rb. If it doesn't make sense it's because I don't give a shit about how easy this reads, actually.
Some folks, queer and not, see trans people as trans first and people second, if they even view us as people at all.
Every piece of media, of social voices, of queer history, of everything screams that a trans woman wants and has to fight. Has to be out and proud in a country that wouldn't think twice to attack or kill us. Has to be strong, has to be a rock for other queers, has to be the idea of the legends that were Sylvia Rivera and Martha P. Jonson and all the others. We also have to be pretty. We have to want to fuck every single person. We have to be loud and we have to be funny and we have to be this idea of a trans woman that internet people have.
I personally can't be that ideal of transness the internet has. I'm constantly scared as hell. I'm both on hrt and also stealthing like my life depends on it, which tbf, it does in one way or another. I now have to bind and I hate it, yet I do it and a binder is on its way to continue to do it better. I look like shit and that's not self-deprecating bullshit, rather a fact that I accept more than I accept your expectations of me. Would I prefer to be out? Yes. Can I do that without placing my livelihood and potentially life at risk? No.
And again and again, both media and other queer people try and tell me if my country, my culture, and my social circles are safe or not. As if they know better than me. "It's hard but it's manageable," says the rich trans woman on the TV. "It's fine, really," says the one with a supportive job and social circle. "You're overeating," says the asshole from a progressive culture.
None of them have seen the disgust and the hate in people's eyes. One has a car, the other is with company and the third is miles and miles away. They haven't seen a whole train wagon quiet down the moment a trans woman enters, they haven't seen how they looked at her. How her shoulders and head were fallen and how tight her jaw was. They haven't seen how ready to fight she was and more importantly, had to be, just taking the train for two stops.
Only one trans woman, a random one in a random article, said it how it is in Greece: Every step as a visible trans woman is a risk. Every walk through an empty road, every interaction at a store, every conversation with a stranger, every appearance in a public space and every time you let someone learn where you live is a potentially life threatening risk. It's a coin flip each time. Do I return home unharmed or not? Heads or tails? Will I be safe in my own house? Heads? Or tails?
And some are brave, some have support, some are rich and some pass perfectly and some do make it unharmed. Others get assaulted, forced into sex work, killed in their own homes, go "missing", get buried with their dead-names by families that hated them. I'm not able nor willing to take that on, until I reach the point were I'll have to. I'm not the internet's idea of a trans woman. I am a trans woman, like an actual fucking person, in a highly hostile environment with absolutely no one having my back.
And I come here, and the progressive internet in general, and I occasionally see cunts from progressive states and countries that act like that being conforming is the most vile thing you can do as a trans person. Passing? Wanting to live without turbulence? Wanting to not have molotovs thrown at your window? Fake tranny. Acting as if transness is a specific nonconforming ideal that all "real" trans people must achieve. And as if we all have to want to be queer ambassadors. As if we all have the freedom to be. (Since this is the zero reading comprehension website, I'll add that I'm not saying that being non-conforming is somehow bad or that everyone that has that as their gender or appearance goal is an inconsiderable asshole.)
I don't have a point to make, I don't think. But I do have a gigantic FUCK YOU to anyone that sees trans people as their idea of transness and not as individual people in varying cultures, situations and mindsets. Guess that's my point. We are people, not ideas. And stop enforcing your ideas on our individualities.

ah, the radfem blogs.
god, I love familiarizing myself with your guys rhetoric. (Or should I say girls??) (are there any male radfems???) (is it like only women??? Because I’m literally a feminist times 7, but idk what’s going on here.)
I try and exist, and my trans moots and friends and you guys just appear out of the wood work and just be so awful for literally no reason.
like, you guys say trans people are all awful. I’m really saddened by that because that’s a VERY big generalization, you’ve met Trans people in real life before?
like wow, that’s actually crazy. I’ve met what 50+? trans people both irl and online, and they have been the sweetest and also the most supportive people I’ve ever known.
just in life and shit.
and I’m a woman, and I don’t understand your ideals.
trans people have been fighting with us in All gay rights things, it’s literally called LGBT.
like, I agree there’s shit tons of absolutely despicable men out there.
and I agree there’s absolutely despicable trans people too, but that’s life??
anyone and everyone can be despicable, and whatever. Evil isn’t limited by race or gender, evil is just evil.
Am I calling you evil??? Fuck no!
but I’m genuinely confused to why you think trans people are invalids.
what’s the reason? You personally were attacked by literally all trans people for something??? Idk (wo)man
Also am I the only person who’s unsettled by women being called females? Because that’s just ew.
we literally have words in not only English but literally every language ever for women. And just why being referred to females better?
it feels so dehumanizing, I’m a woman. Not a female, and trans women are women.
yeah, I know. Pull out the whatever, but also being referred to male is dehumanizing too.
WE LITERALLY HAVE WORDS for it, idk why we all want to go and use dehumanizing language on both sides.
I’m so confused why you think trans people are “holding themselves hostage to have surgery, because they’ll kill themselves” because that is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life, more ridiculous then pigs flying.
who said that, literally I want you to quote more than 20 trans people that have said that. Not radfem blogs, not terf anything.
just actual trans people, and if you can’t find anything! Then great!
“Why are trans suicide rates so high?” Um, do.. do you think transphobia literally doesn’t exist.. literally your contributing to it my guy (girl).
if I can speak to not only 50+ trans people, and none of them literally ever has called me names or anything. I think it’s a skill issue, (translation: you’re doing something wrong.) because like how.
I’ve done DEEP research into trans stuff, for literally like 4+ years.
talked to 50+ trans people and their experiences.
and done deep reflection and also talked with trans people about their relationship with gender and all that.
if I can realize that trans people aren’t crazy. (also, being trans btw is not a delusion. A delusion you’re probably thinking of is more like thinking you’re Elvis when you’re a woman. Or thinking you’re princess Diana when you’re a man. And you fit the criteria of a delusional disorder or something.)
and are just idk existing then what’s the point, I don’t hate you and I never will.
but just why?
also as someone who’s talked to numerous victims of grooming and of other internet predators.
I’ve literally heard of exactly 1-2 trans groomers, and I’m also like 90% sure they were lying and were men trying to groom trans kids.
I’ve been on the web, and in real life my whole life. (Call me chronically online, but this is literally the only place safe from my parents abuse lolzor)
and I just don’t get it.
maybe we live too different lives to compare, but I just don’t get it.
why are trans people so bad in terf’s/radfem’s eyes?
when they are just your neighbors, cooks, artists, architects, coders, doctors, and scientists.
idk 🤷‍♀️
tell me why?
I don’t know what you actually wanted out of this unfocused rant where you accused me of saying a whole bunch of stuff I never said and you just decided I must believe.
I can’t and won’t argue with this make believe person you’ve projected onto me. If you’re actually interested in what I think and why, ask me specific questions.
I can say that I don’t believe every trans person is bad or a groomer. In fact many trans people are perfectly lovely. I think trans people deserve to live their lives free of discrimination and violence and like all people deserve the right to self expression.
Where I disagree with you is how the current trans activism movement is conducting itself, along with concerns about intertwined but broader cultural trends. I believe the current movement is doing more harm than good. To trans people as well as women and the LGB.
If you’re actually interested I’d be happy to explain each and every conclusion I’ve reached and why. But I doubt very much this was a genuine attempt to understand me. It is far more likely this ask was a performance that reinforces your own sense of being “good”. And yet you don’t even have the strength of conviction in these beliefs of yours to attach a name to it. If I really am an evil bigot, you have done nothing brave by sending a long winded anon to someone whose opinions you haven’t even bothered to learn.
