Y’know I actually think we really need to talk about how more fem/less masc presenting characters are treated by the utmv fandom.
Because characters like Ink, Dream, Blue, and Lust have had a very disturbing pattern in how they’re treated. There are usually three really bad pitfalls that happen with portrayals of their characters.
infantilization/uwuification
villainization/yandereifiction
fetishization/hypersexualization
With these tropes often overlapping.
The version of bastardization we’re all pretty familiar with is infantilization/uwuification, where the characters are treated as overly innocent/cute and are often denied their maturity or agency in things. We all know the Bluwuberry situation and how Ink was treated pre-2018 and how Dream is still often treated today with very little push back, all of these characters are treated as innocent or demure simply for presenting less masculine or being “good guys”. But this can also be deliberately done in an attempt to “save” a character from preexisting misconceptions. See the #SaveLustBean situation from 2020-2021, where people (primarily on the utmv side of YouTube, usually young creators) tried to dispel the negative connotations around Lust’s character by… basically infantilizing him. It’s right in the hashtag, calling him an “UwU Smol bean” instead of just- saying #SaveLustSans or something like that that is more definitive. Their intentions were very noble, but their methods were misplaced.
Now on the other end of the spectrum, villainization. We’ve all seen it with Ink being treated like an unforgivable monster post 2018, we’ve all seen Lust being characterized as a gross pervert or deviant when he’s not, and we’ve all seen the villainization and uwuification compound to make yandereification with how Blue was treated in the early days. Even Dream is starting to be villainized in very upsetting ways. The issue with these portrayals isn’t that they portray these characters as dark or complex or as villains, I myself find darker interpretations of Dream and Ink fascinating. It’s about either the extent to which they misrepresent and mischaracterize the characters or the way the behavior is presented. With Ink and Dream especially their actions are often treated as irrational and hysterical, to the extent of playing into common tropes of the “unstable fem person who can’t control their emotions”. On the other hand there is Lust, who is villainized and ostracized because of his femininity and often is forced into a more masculine role, with the way his fem presentation is gawked at often resembling the way people forcefully masculinize and ostracize trans women. He is treated like a weirdo creep because of his nonconformity compounded with his proximity to suggestive themes and it’s… not fun to witness.
Now finally, the hardest of these to talk about and the least talked about of these topics, fetishization and hypersexualization. If you are sensitive to these topics/discussion of suggestive themes I suggest you skip this section, though know that nothing will be described in detail here. This is not about people simply ethically depicting these characters in suggestive ways or as people who have sex lives/appeal, that’s not at all what I’m referring to. I’m talking about the way that these characters often have sexual themes forced upon them, how all of their traits are often sexualized, and how these things are specifically done because of their femininity. Ink’s neurological issues are often fetishized with people treating him as mindless or helpless and then somehow trying to make that something they can exploit. Blue’s infantilized and yandereified nature are often accompanied with heavy sexualization, especially in the earlier fandom days. Dream is very rarely given proper attention beyond potential sex appeal and being a goody two shoes, with his own damn creator infantilizing him and then putting him in deeply upsetting situations. Lust especially is often not given room to exist outside of sex and is treated like nothing more than a suggestive deviant.
And a lot of people will ask me how all of this relates to their femininity and will claim it’s not exclusive to them, but if you look at how people treat the other characters that’s just not true. The bad guys are allowed to be complex and interesting, they are allowed to take on respectable archetypes, the stars and Lust are often not.
And whenever people try to remove them from these bastardizations they often do one thing that is very telling: they remove the non-masculine or unique traits of the characters.
People make them more masculine, less cute, more sanitized, they take away what makes these characters special, as if masculinity and a lack of cuteness and being nonsexual is what is required to deserve respect or proper characterization.
All of this to say: just because we are the fandom of gay gender nonconforming skeletons does not mean that there isn’t deep-rooted misogyny we need to unpack.
Obviously if you’ve ever made a mistake in portraying these characters or accidentally participated in bastardization you’re not suddenly a misogynistic monster, I just think it’s good to take a closer examination at how we have historically and continue to portray certain characters and may accidentally perpetuate certain harmful ideologies.
Feel free to discuss, just keep it civil.
Shoutout to @letsatomicbanana for bringing this to my attention.

There’s so many different versions of moon and sun that now I’m starting to think that maybe just maybe, the fnaf daycare attendant is going to be a new tumblr sexy man…
Like think about it. This is what I generally consider a tumblr sexy man is:
- tumblr going feral over them (duh)
- there’s multiple versions of them that interact with each other
- gets shipped with themself
- the fan base around this character is like it’s own fandom

Just wait until i rant about how i have to unteach every (not exaggerating) white person a lifetime of normalized racism. I wanna say more but thats it. The amount of microaggressions and very not so micro aggressions i hear in a day *eyeball twitch grin.
This is kind of funny but its also not, since we were like 14 ive molded my (obv white) boyfriend into the perfect man--i have spent YEARRRSSS correcting him and beating all the stupid shit he was raised believing up until this point. its rlly fucking hard almost always being the only black person in a space but its nice having him there bc hes also mixed (filo) so w share a lot of grievances PLUS when someone says something awful he'll immediately find me and we will make the most INTENSE eye contact and make a face at each other lolol

Y’know I’m convinced most people in this fandom aren’t ready to accept the fact that Underlust was never supposed to be an easy-to-swallow AU.
The whole purpose of UL was to address very difficult and dark topics, ideally in a respectful and proper manner. It was built to address subjects that cannot and should not be sanitized or watered down. It was a serious AU at its core. It’s not supposed to make you feel comfortable, it’s not supposed to be easy to sit with. It addresses a lot of problems present in our society today and it’s supposed to make you think.
The original creator of UL was very much weird asf and I do not support them in the slightest as I have said multiple times, and there is definitely room to question their motives, but for the most part, at least in the properly canon parts of the AU and from what I remember, these darker aspects seemed to be handled with a lot of gravity and seriousness.
I’m tired of seeing people trying to “remake” Underlust. I’m sick of AU’s seeking to replace it. Because while it is definitely a flawed and unfinished project, riddled with strange remnants of its creator’s concerning behavior, it is now public domain and therefore we have the right to try and fill in the blanks and clean it up, to do it justice. We don’t need to replace it, it’s laying on the ground right there, we need to fix it. And you know what fixing it doesn’t entail? Erasing the serious subject matter.
Underlust’s more serious topics shouldn’t be swept under the rug or removed, they should be handled with care and tact, treated with the respect they deserve. Because while these subjects should never be glamorized, romanticized, or fetishized, they very much should have a chance to be depicted realistically. Not gratuitously, not graphically, not vulgarly, but realistically. Respectfully. Carefully. Accurate and respectful depictions of serious subject matter are a very important aspect of trying to combat their romanticization.
And I am sick and tired of seeing people claiming Underlust to be nothing more than that, and that no one should like it or try to do it justice. I’m tired of people just throwing it to the pro/shippers to be regarded as that kind of material when all that does is let the pro/shippers win. Don’t let them win, don’t throw UL to the dogs. It has the potential to be a very meaningful story if given care and time.
none of this is to say that you always have to depict UL in a super serious manner, nor is it to invalidate the discomfort some may feel surrounding its creator, but what I am trying to say here is to try and make future fleshings-out of this AU more considerate and to not villainize it. It just aggravates me how people will harass others for liking UL or will try to remake it in a super sanitized, comfortable manner, because UL is public domain and can be so much more than the strange actions of its creator, and at the same time it’s not supposed to make you feel comfortable. These subjects are serious, they’re uncomfortable, that’s natural. Making them seem comfortable just normalizes them.
hoping all this makes sense I promise I’m not angry I’m just- yeah

Okay new character???
Tumblr media
I'm going to be honest and say I was very much like "EXUSE ME?! WHAT?!?" Because who wouldn't when seeing that without knowing it meant age play T-T (Dude age plays my age XD) His bio saying he is scared of getting older hits so close to home. I didn't get a childhood, had to grow up like an adult and missed out on a lot of things so seeing a character also have that fear is pretty cool.
Anyway, sorry for the seriousness. His design is cute and I love his outfit(Him and Dantalian have this uniform athletic that I love) UwU

Eddie's gonna invite Buck to a one-on-one game of basketball before he leaves, but only if he doesn't push him again and damn near break his ankle like he did last time.
Take note of the Season 3 "Just don't do it again" point.

nothin' serious, just thinkin
The whole situation with a certain Indie creator’s work blowing up too quickly and feeling overwhelmed by it, really makes me think about how… not fun it is sometimes when your work gets popular. Obviously my level of popularity and fandom doesn’t match there’s but dealing with people who see your OCs and start claiming them as their own, disrespect boundaries and basically hound you with their preferences is such a reoccurring problem it’s a bit scary.
For example, I remember wanting to completely scrap Powers as a character when people were treating her as a self insert to be homophobic and misogynistic, despite carrying neither of those traits. People make fetish art of my OCs and then tag me in it (and if I don’t reblog/retweet it they practically spam me about it). I’ve had people try to steal my own OCs out of spite. I’ve seen people draw smut of my underaged characters. People have gotten angry with me when my characters disprove their headcanons or present themselves in ways that aren’t their preferences. The amount of times I’ve dealt with people genuinely angry with me that Sera is a woman is a scary amount. Queer people thinking my art is fetish content that is catered for straight men. I’ve had people tell me that because I don’t depict more of a specific group, that means I despise them and that my art is inherently promoting hateful ideology for not depicting them. People sending me videos of bugs being killed or mocking my characters because they think it’s funny. and I have to repeat again these aren’t random trolls online, this is from my own followers.
And you guys have seen how angry people get when I tell them to stop being bigoted under my queer art, whether it’s complaining that I’m drawing too many women/lesbians or bitching that I’m drawing gay men at all, I’ve had to deal with the unfortunate fact some of my followers, no matter how many times I try to push them off my account are just… very hateful and think my work is fetish content meant to cater to them. Lesbian art isn’t queer art, it’s a porn category for some people. And a lot of queer men think it’s fine to lesbophobic and misogynistic under my art and demand that I draw less female characters because (insert that annoying Speed quote here)
I do really like the fanart and I’m completely fine with NSFW works as long as the characters are 18+, but it’s just. It’s scary sometimes. And it scares me to imagine what would happen if I really blew up. Respect creator’s boundaries… please.

Reason why I would like Vox's sweather to be orange:
Just like Husk, he would have a more orangey color pallet before he became super involved/owned/obsessed with Alastor. Once Al owned Husk's soal, the cat lost his orange accents, replaced by red. I want Vox to be the same
I think our timelines here are very different because I actually see vox as having already been obsessed with alastor before he met val, but like not the same way he's obsessed in the present, like a more positive still super unhealthy crush obsession.
I could even see the val and vox photo as being after vox's falling out with alastor (but it's not really a set in stone hc it's like something I see in some cases but don't see in others). to me it's actually like
Tumblr media
vox's outfit used to mirror alastor's (you can see a pinstripes on his shoulder in the torn out picture) back when they were friends
Tumblr media
and then he proceeded to wear a turtleneck identical to the colour of val's wings when he first partners up with val
in a way he's like taking elements from whoever he chooses to associate with at the moment which is why I like seeing vox's turtleneck as being identical to the colour of val's wings (I mean it kinda. literally is. but we've been in this debate long enough)
until he... went back to copying alastor in his current present outfit. weirdo
