Revali from BoTW for the character opinion bingo!
Tumblr media
Ohhhh you're gonna get me killed by the fandom for this one, that there is a character I have some BAGGAGE with
Okay here's my thing
I kinda despise Revali And it sucks because I really REALLY don't want to
Story time
I grew up playing Wind Waker, it was my first video game ever, and from that game the Rito were my favorite race, and they remained my favorite all these years. You probably wouldn't be able to find someone more hyped than me for the return of these beautiful birds.
So. April 2017. When I got my hands on BOTW I decided I'd save the Rito zone for last, I'd kept myself blind so I could go in and experience everything purely.
So imagine my surprise when I unlock the champion I'd been most excited for, the Rito, the champion of my favorite Zelda race from my earliest childhood memories.
And he was a complete fucking douchebag
At first I was like oh :( well okay maybe we'll be given some more information on him and it'll be better!! After all characters with huge egos can be extremely fun!!!
So I maintained hope that maybe the upcoming DLC would give us something
December 2017
We got something!! A teeny tiny fragment that suggested maybe Revali's ego was just a coverup for a deeply troubled bird, it was hardly anything at all but it was something.
But then his journal made him like 10 times worse in such a way that the DLC honestly didn't do much but make him more insufferable
So I was deeply saddened, they'd given us something but simultaneously made him more unlikeable. I thought that would be the end of it. But then!! Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity was announced. And I was THRILLED. FINALLY. we were going to get AN ENTIRE game alongside the champions, I was gonna get more content for Best Girl Mipha, and FINALLY AN ENTIRE GAME'S WORTH OF CHANCES TO GIVE REVALI SOME CHARACTERIZATION. YES!!!!
November 2020. AOC comes out. Holy. Fucking. Shit. Revali what did they do to you? To my shock he'd graduated from a little unlikeable to downright unpleasant to watch. Even my best friend, a diehard Revali fan through and through, could not STAND what they'd done with him. We got a whole game with this guy and they basically spent the whole thing trashing this guy's character. He was arrogant to the point of annoying, horribly rude to characters who had done nothing to earn it, and overall was just kinda a ballache. And not even in the 'fun annoying character' way.
But hey!! AOC was getting DLC as well!!! That is meant to flesh out the characters more!!! We'll definitely get something there!!
October 2021. Guardian of Remembrance comes out. Yeah this DLC gave us fuck all really. That goes for all the champions, but I think Revali suffered pretty bad in this regard. Some of the scenes with Tulin were cute but they didn't do much in terms of Revali's character.
And....that's where we are now. Tears of the Kingdom is on the horizon, and I highly doubt we're gonna get much on the Champions in this game but...well I've maintained hope for six years already, why stop now?
So yeah my feelings on Revali are...complicated to say the least. There's so much I love about him, his design is probably my favorite of the Champions (next to Mipha), he easily has like...the best voice in the whole fucking game, and the character POTENTIAL is absolutely incredible. But all in all it feels like they've done nothing with that potential, for what is supposed to be the most Character driven era of Zelda to date, it truly feels like they've let his character stagnate, if not actively regress in a way that I REALLY do not vibe with.
I can see what people can love about him, god knows I've done more when provided with less in a character. It's not the ego that gets me, I love cocky characters, ffs my favorite BOTW character is Master Kohga for crying out loud, and that man has a damn near god complex. (Kohga, incidentally, has LEGITIMATELY EXPERIENCED MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THAN REVALI. WHAT.)
Like I'm not saying I want his character to do a full 180, just a couple more scenes like what we got in Champion's Ballad, just a couple more cracks in the facade would have done wonders. But instead they just kept him rather one note. Feels bad man.
Ultimately it feels like they're just going in circles with this character, arguably the Champion with the most potential to be interesting and they're doing fuck all with it. I can see why people love him, but idk, I've dealt with a few people irl with egos like that and that's probably not helped.
Idk, I guess this character managed to regress perfectly into a niche I cannot stand, and it sucks because it feels like such a personal loss to me.
I guess to put it very shortly
Revali is a bully. And I'll take a full blown villain over a bully any day.

It is kind of a curse having played video games for so long (my entire life from around age 4) that I'm simply not bad enough to have many funny experiences to talk about. I rarely struggle due to two decades of ingrained instincts of game design tropes. "I beat this without struggling at all" just doesn't lead to many interesting moments, so I only talk about story and characters and ships that I'm interested in.
The main reason I basically only talk about Link and Zelda isn't because it is my *sole* enjoyment of the game (far from it, actually. I enjoy every aspect of the gameplay), but because (at risk of offending people) ...I just don't find the other characters very interesting? It's ironic to say that, because Link doesn't have that much explicit characterization himself, but I find his backstory and what we do know about him and what he goes through to be compelling and relatable. The main story of botw & totk (while yes, it is also about their connections to Hyrule and their friends), is mostly Link and Zelda's story, anyway.
I did like the champions, especially Urbosa and Revali (yes, I am a Revali sympathizer), but they're all dead now and barely mentioned in totk, so I don't have much to say there.
I liked Mineru, Rauru and Sonia, but we barely got to know them. I did like the implication that Mineru let Zelda ride around her construct in the past, and did experiments together (though, I kind of wish that had been a cutscene).
Ganondorf is cool looking and all, but he wasn't a super compelling villain or anything. Not that he really he needed to be for me. He's the big bad boss you fight and that's fine by me.
I like Purah, but she is more of a supporting cast member (and comedic relief in AoC and botw). She was also a lot more interesting in AoC, tbh.
Paya... did absolutely nothing and had very little actual growth. It honestly really disappointed me that her character seems to exist just to stand around and look pretty. Tauro exists, I guess?
Sidon was honestly very flat to me compared to how he was in AoC, and I'm just not interested in him at all in the way other people are (I lean towards women and don't find anthropomorphic animal characters attractive. I honestly feel nothing at all when I look at Sidon. I'm sorry if that upsets somebody). I liked Yona's design the most out of any of the Zora designs so far, but I don't really feel any type of way about her. I did like that she encouraged Sidon.
I like Riju, but I really don't like her being sexualized, which is what a lot of people seem to do when she is brought up.... so I'm a little scared to talk about her character lol.
Yunobo is Yunobo. I don't hate him but there's not much to say about him (except for when he became a drug overlord for a moment lol). He fulfills the same role as Daruk as the goofy goron bro and that's fine.
Teba unfortunately didn't really do much this time, but It was nice seeing Tulin grow up and come into his own in totk.
...and that's about it. Again, the main story mainly focuses on Zelda (Which I don't mind, she's my favourite. I'm shamelessly Princess Zelda biased), so I'm just a bit passive about everyone else.

I didnt realize you have a tumblr thats amazing!! I just wanted to say beating about the bush is one of my most favorite fics ever and thank you for writing it!!!! I reread it constantly and the writing is soooooo funny and i think that fic is what truly got me into revalink. Ince again, ty for writing and if you ever continue it i can die happy
THANK YOU SO MUCH I'M SO SORRY I'VE BEEN SO LATE AT REPLYING. T_T ao3 and tumblr messages all mean a ton to me but then I get so paralyzed at responding because I wanna craft the perfect reply that expresses how thankful I am that you took time out of your day to tell me you liked something I made T_T Especially when people tell me they REGUALRILY REREAD MY STUFF??? THAT'S SO COOL AND HUMBLING. My ao3 inbox is sitting at 343 comments though and I'm overwhelmed and ridden with guilt that I snubbed people with my perfectionist procrastination at crafting 'the perfect reply' when any reply is better than none. I will try to at least be much faster if not instantanous about tumblr inbox messages though! I'm actually really interested in rejoining revalink fandom and I want to... idk feel like I have a relationship with you all, (revalink producers, consumers, enjoyers, EVERYONE. If you are reading this and like revalink I mean YOU) I'm rambling XD I'm so excited to be off twitter and somewhere where I can type without word limits that I am ABUSING IT. Anywhoo yeah! I've been having a LOT of beating about the bush and youtubers au thoughts recently. I think about them every night when I go to bed. I really want to get back into writing BATB but I'm so rusty, but I have serious plans to!
BATB was always very special to me because I usually try to write stuff I think people 'want to read' but BATB was something that started off being 'I'm doing this for me. I'm not holding myself to standards of quality, I'm just going to have fun' and then people ended up really vibing with it!
It was definitely also my 'wish fufillment fic' Escapism into a small town surrounded by nature, being friends with all your neighbours that are so close you can just walk over to their house. I'm a geoscientist and I LOVE feildwork. A lot of my friends go off every summer in small Revali-type private planes to work in the Northern Canadian wilderness and I'm GREEN with envy so a bit of that is in there too fkjgn.
PLUS REVALI's ACREAGE. UG. My prof had an acreage he filled with all of his favourite things. a house for cats, a house for dogs, a-barn-renovated-into-a-home-gym. I thought 'that is the LIFE' and immediately took inspo giving revali an acreage to fill with all his fav things.
so tl:dr uh.. THANK YOU. I APPRECIATE YOU. AND I HOPE TO UPDATE EVENTUALLY! WHOOT!

19 and 6 for the ask game?🙏🏻
oughhh anon... these numbers... i got the notification for this when i was at work and when i looked at the list, i was like 🥹🥹🥹 my scrunklies are fighting and they're sick nooo.....
you're actually going to want to sit down and make sure you don't have to do anything to read this one, shit is long af 😭
(ask game from here)
🫂 19. How they make up after a big fight?
first of all, revali and link definitely have little arguments and bicker, but they rarely ever have big fights for a couple reasons. mostly because they both hate the usual outcomes of their big fights, and do their best to never fight like that ever.
revali is definitely easier to anger than link is, because he's got some deep-seated insecurities (esp from my headcanon about his early childhood). but he honestly could get mad at anything depending on his mood, because he's already a very grumpy person. link lowkey just talks out of his ass without a filter sometimes and anything link says could piss revali off, intentionally or not. "you're being over the top, you're doing too much" "if you're gonna molt, can you pick up after yourself, your feathers are fucking everywhere" "stop putting your bows on the dresser or i'm gonna keep knocking them into the lake" or something dumb like the aforementioned can cause the both of them to start bickering out of nowhere.
but sometimes, they let that bickering get out of control and it spirals into a fight before they even realize it, where they both start saying things they don't mean.
the first time they really fought, revali missed a shot at the flight range during a training session and link jokingly said "how did you get chosen as a champion with that kind of aim?" to which revali replies, "even my worst shot is better than your best" and then it somehow goes from playful banter to bickering to actual arguing, culminating into revali's final straw when he says, "if you wanted someone that was perfect and could fulfill your every damn need like i supposedly can't, then perhaps you should have chosen to be with zelda or mipha instead of me," to which link yells back, "you know what? you're right, maybe i should have! at least zelda and mipha are actually in love with me." revali goes quiet, staring at link with burning green eyes, his crest feathers flaring.
link's eyes widen when he realizes what he said, and he immediately moves and reaches out towards revali, "w-wait no, i didn't mean that, i'm sorry, revali i—"
but the rito, stony-faced and silent, throws his swallow bow into the range, his glare stopping link in his tracks. "if you truly believe i don't love you," he says, voice scarily calm, "then do yourself a favor and reconsider what the point of this relationship is, to wonder why i still chose to tie my life to yours, knowing i couldn't give you even a quarter of what zelda and mipha can no matter how hard i try. if all of my efforts meant nothing to you, then at most all i could wish is that i gave you an enjoyable time." then, revali turns and uses his gale to launch himself upwards, disappearing from link's view. link falls to his knees on the platform, staring up at the sky, eyes filled with tears, guilt, and regret.
one of revali's biggest insecurities regarding his relationship with link would definitely be the fact that zelda and mipha loved him too, and he frequently wonders why link chose him when there were two princesses of great families vying for his hand. why would link choose him when a princess with control over the land's waters, who crafted perfectly-fitting armor with special abilities for him that would allow him to swim with her, desired him for far longer? why would link want him when a princess directly descended from this land's goddess wanted him too, who could actually give link a child of his own blood, who could give him the world's riches and all the power he could ever want? all revali can give link are feathers tucked into his hair and a piece of fabric that could keep him afloat for a couple moments. revali can't give him much more than that. but for link to openly acknowledge it, to entertain it even... it hurts him more than he can fathom.
revali is gone for the rest of the day, having fucked off towards the hebra north crest and taking his anger out on monster camps along the fringes of the hebra mountains. meanwhile, link returns to rito village by foot, every step heavy with guilt, and before he enters the village, he stops by one of the ponds in the island spires leading up to the village and grabs a few hearty salmon. link knows that what he said was a deep insecurity for revali and he used it against him; it's unforgivable, he shouldn't be forgiven at all.
but it makes his heart ache hard at the idea that revali would consider leaving him, tears stinging his eyes and feeling like his chest is going to collapse in on itself. he shouldn't be forgiven, but link will spend the rest of his life begging for revali's forgiveness if he has to. so he'll start with what he knows best: making a good meal.
when link reaches their shared roost, he sets up the cooking pot in the center, lighting the fire and clearing the table to set up his materials and utensils. tonight, he'll make revali's favorite meal, hearty salmon meunière. it's not an entire apology, but it's a good start to one. in the open air of their roost, link desperately hopes that its aroma will lead revali back home to him.
revali returns just as the sun is beginning to dip below the horizon, thoroughly calmed and worn down from the massacre he's inflicted upon the monster camps at the fringes. who knew so many had settled back there? he'll have to return again soon to finish them off. instinctually, he flies straight to their shared roost before remembering his earlier fight with link and hesitates, wondering if link is there, if they should see each other right now. but a particular scent catches his nose and all uncertainty disappears. revali wants to go home now, and he hopes his home is still there when he arrives.
link is sitting by the cooking pot when revali descends on their roost's landing, curled in on himself, his head nestled in folded arms atop his knees. revali's heart pangs at the sight, fingers twitching to comfort his beloved jewel until he remembers that link was the reason he flew off in a rage in the first place. he should be angry, but he's fought it all out now and he can't find it in him to be with his songbird in distress right in front of him.
as he approaches, link startles and looks up, meeting revali's eyes and the rito's heart pangs again at the sight of link's eyes rimmed red and puffy, his nose pink clearly from crying. "hi," link says, voice hoarse. "welcome home."
revali hums in response, acknowledging the greeting. "did you start eating without me?" he says gently, sitting beside link, folding his legs, and studying his face. in the flickering firelight, link's face looks pale and gaunt, saved for the crying-induced pink splotching across his nose and cheeks. it unsettles something in revali.
"no," link mumbles, looking away. then he uncurls to reach in front of him, and pulls back revealing a steaming hot plate of hearty salmon meunière. revali's eyes widen as link hands it to him. "made this for you."
"you did?" revali says, taking the plate and staring at it in surprise. link hums in affirmation. the meat of the fish is glazed and enticing, and his stomach rumbles at the delicious smell of it. "it's my favorite..." he looks back at link, who has curled back into his initial position. he feels that twitch in his fingers again, to hold link, but resists. "what's the occasion?"
"to say sorry," link says softly. "for earlier. i didn't mean what i said."
revali hums. "thank you," he responds in similar volume. "i appreciate it. we both said things we didn't mean, so i apologize as well. i forgive you." he looks around but there's only his plate by the cooking pot. "i thought you said you didn't start eating yet. where's your food?"
"didn't make any," link mumbles.
revali pauses and blinks. "and why is that?"
"can't eat," his little songbird replies and revali feels his heart plummet, somehow dreading the answer. link lays his head down atop his arms but faces away from revali. "can't eat if i don't know if you'll come back." oh.
finally succumbing to his instincts, revali immediately sets the plate aside and grabs for link, to pull him into his lap, and link squeaks but is nonetheless pliant in revali's hands. revali situates them so that link sits sideways in his lap, his head on revali's left and his legs on the right. cradling link, revali places his beak on his mate's mussed hair (he needs to rebraid it soon, hm) and hugs him tight. almost instantly, he feels link cling to his armor and gasp shakily, burying his face in the space between revali's shoulder and neck. "'vali—"
"did you really think i would leave you for something like that?" revali murmurs, maintaining his steady hold as link begins to shudder and cry in his arms. "link—"
"please don't," link begins to blubber, his voice wavering. "please don't leave, don't leave me! i'm sorry i'm sorry i didn't mean it, i love you and i know you love me too, i was just saying shit to say it 'cause i was mad, i love you, revali please—"
"breathe, songbird," revali whispers, leaning down to press his forehead against link's and cupping his cheek. link gasps out a sob, his hands clinging tightly to revali's wrist, like he's afraid revali will slip from his grasp. "breathe for me, darling, you're going to choke." so link forces himself to breathe deeply, hiccuping and shaking as he attempts to calm down, his eyes shut. "that's it, little jewel. i'm not going anywhere, i'm right here. i forgive you already."
"revali," link whimpers, but revali just shushes him, leaning back and beginning to rock slightly. revali should be angry with link, but he just can't bring himself to be; he's too soft-hearted when it's about link.
after a couple more moments, link is placid and his breath has evened out, sobs reduced to sniffles. he still clings tightly to revali, still fearing the idea of revali leaving him. only then does revali decide to speak again.
"why did you think that i would leave you?" revali murmurs, turning his face slightly to nuzzle at link's jaw. link relaxes in his hold by a margin, but relaxes nonetheless. "in fact, i would have thought you were going to leave me with the way we were talking." at the thought of link leaving him, revali shivers slightly, a pit growing in his stomach; perhaps this is what link had felt, had let that pit grow and consume him and take over.
"never," link responds immediately. "i'd never leave you." link pauses, and then speaks again. "but i thought you were gonna leave 'cause i fucked up. i shouldn't have said that, and i didn't mean it at all. i'm sorry. i don't care about zelda or mipha or if they do love me, i love you." link curls up further into revali's lap before mumbling, "i don't need or want anyone else. you're the perfect one for me, so please don't leave me and find someone else. i don't think i could bear it."
"i wouldn't," revali says softly, and holds link a little tighter. "i don't want anyone else either." they stay like this for a little while until—
"your food's cold now," link mumbles against revali's chest. "i worked really hard on it and you're just gonna make me cry so that you don't eat the food i worked so hard on." revali's beak parts and then he snorts at the utter audacity of link's comment.
"we just had our first actual fight as a coupling, and you're worried about the food?" revali teases. link hums in affirmation and revali rolls his eyes. "alright, well let's just put it back in the pot to warm up then."
"it'll ruin the texture," link mumbles, but he uncurls from his position in revali's lap to reach for the plate. using the knife, he slides the fish into the cooking pot and then curls back up into revali. the action reminds revali of another critical detail—
he nudges link's face with his beak. "will you really not eat? you haven't eaten anything since before we started training."
link shakes his head. "lost my appetite," he murmurs. "just wanna be with you right now."
revali makes a displeased noise. "but you have to eat something," he insists. "i refuse to let you go hungry tonight. i'll make you something then."
"no, you suck at cooking," link mutters. "i'll just eat an apple or something."
"that's not a meal, you have to eat a proper supper."
"well, i don't wanna eat anyway."
"link." revali's tone is a warning. "i don't want to fight with you again so soon."
link huffs and shifts in revali's hold. "fine," he acquiesces. "i'll eat a little bit from your plate." he uncurls and takes the plate and knife again, pushing the fish out of the pot so that it plops back onto the plate. "let me go get a fork."
"that's not a meal either," revali sighs, but he lets link stand and keeps his eyes on the little hylian as he grabs a fork from the table, then returns, making himself comfortable in revali's lap once more. revali holds the plate and they share the hearty salmon meunière, link slicing off tiny pieces to chew on, revali's right wing hooked around his waist when he isn't slicing food to eat. they're okay. as they eat, their hearts are full again and if link holds revali a little tighter in the hammock that night, revali doesn't say anything, wrapping his wings around link a little tighter, too.
now if it's revali saying the fucked up shit, it takes a lot for link to get actually upset, especially with revali because he's so used to revali being harsh or mean without really meaning it all the time. revali usually says shit like "your aim sucks" or "you're really sloppy and look like a mess, you need to clean up" and those sort of things don't bother link very much because revali is so whipped for him, he either lets link get away with it or helps link himself, e.g. extra practice with archery lessons or combing and braiding link's hair himself. sometimes revali just says things to say something fr.
so when revali says something that genuinely upsets link, he does similarly to what revali does and goes completely silent and fucks off to somewhere, but the difference is that he doesn't come back at the end of the day.
in the rare instances that link gets upset from a fight with revali, he can disappear from a couple days to a few weeks at a time. and revali can't find him, because link has explored nearly every nook and cranny in this goddamn country and playing seeker in the most emotionally charged hide-and-seek game across the vast lands of hyrule is a game revali has never been able to win. when link runs and hides, he doesn't want to be found. it's why revali avoids trying not to upset link to that degree as much as possible, because every time he's tried, he can't find link and he's afraid link won't come back, either from finding someone else or leaving himself to be found by revali in... undesirable conditions.
link has only disappeared twice thus far. the first time, he was gone for a couple days, revali practically tearing up the entirety of the hebra region looking for him, nearly pulling his feathers out. squadrons of rito warrior search parties are sent out too to look for link, to quell their champion's panic, but link just shows up back at the village after five days and revali has half a mind to chew him out, absolutely fuming.
but he takes one look at link with his scruffy hair, the dark circles under his eyes, and the wrinkled fabric of the clothes link was wearing the day they fought, and without a word grabs link by the hand to pull him towards the communal rito bath. link is nonverbal, staring blankly into space, and completely unresponsive as revali strips him of his clothing and places him in the bath. it starts to worry revali as he washes link's hair and body; where did link even go? what happened to him out there? this version of link... it reminds him of the link he met after windblight ganon was defeated; a link with no recognition in his eyes, no warmth or soul. it terrifies revali.
link is still nonverbal and unresponsive when they return to their shared roost, still staring blankly into space, body rigid and unmoving. revali can't even remember what they argued about at this point, he's so consumed with worry for his mate and why he's acting like this that whatever he said, he'll forgo his pride and take it back so that this doesn't happen, now or ever again.
but when he seats link in front of him and begins to comb through his wet hair and separate the strands to braid them back into their usual look, link slowly begins to relax. carefully, revali massages his fingers into link's scalp and his mate hums in response, leaning into his touch. there he is, his little songbird. so revali continues as he does; massaging, combing, and braiding, and then he begins to sing quietly, hoping to get link to sing with him, to respond to him.
it works, link humming along to revali's song and slowly beginning to sing the words too. by the time revali has finished rebraiding his feathers into link's hair, his precious songbird is back to him with those wide bright sapphires for eyes.
"where did you even go?" revali says, as link leans completely back into him, still humming to revali's song.
"the forgotten temple," link says breezily like it's nothing, but revali freezes.
"what? why would you even go there? it's still infested with guardians."
"because i knew you wouldn't follow me there," link says softly. and that takes the breath out of revali's lungs. link turns to look up at him. "after we fought, i was just so angry i didn't even know what to do. so i went down to the rito stable, i took epona, and i kept riding until i got to the snowfield stable. then i boarded her there and i jumped into the canyon to enter the temple." link turns back around. "it's not as bad in there as you think it is, once you get rid of all the guardians. it's not infested anymore."
"... you took out the guardians there?"
"yeah. let's go there sometime, it's pretty even though it's in ruins. i think zelda would probably like to study the ruins too."
link treats the whole situation like it's nothing and evades revali's every attempt to discuss what happened, both the fight and his disappearance. "it's fine," link insists. "i forgive you and you're fine. i just had to be by myself to process it for a while. i'm all good now, please don't worry anymore."
so revali tries, but it still bothers him. something must have happened, but link won't tell him what. he decides to leave it for now, but they eventually have to talk about it. it can't be avoided forever.
the second time it happens, revali lets his pride get the best of him. they're fishing for hearty salmon in the hebra plunge when link decides to throw his square and circle bombs into the water and detonate them. it yields quite a few chillfin trout and hearty salmon, and link cheers. revali, however, is displeased.
"will you always resort to that sheikah slate to assist you?" revali grumbles after he finishes collecting the fish from the lake.
link places his hands behind his neck and whistles. "well, it makes fishing a lot easier for both of us!"
"yes, but it takes away the art of hunting," revali sighs, "and it's incredibly loud. do you wish to scare away the prey?"
"as if the fish can go anywhere else," link says. "can they even climb waterfalls? i don't think so!" he sticks his tongue out at the water. "checkmate, fish."
"careful, you wouldn't want mipha hearing you insult her kind."
"oh, shut up—"
and just like when they fought the first time, it goes from banter to bickering to a full blown argument faster than either of them can register it. but this time, revali makes the mistake of bursting and using one of link's deep insecurities against him...
"revali, it's really not that serious! i did what i had to in order to defeat the calamity once and for all, and if i had to do it again, i probably wouldn't even need the master sword! i could beat ganon with only a bow if i wanted to."
"well, you couldn't even defeat ganon the first time round and you needed our help to do it this time, so i doubt that you would ever succeed."
it stops link in his tracks, brows furrowing. "... what are you saying?"
revali rolls his eyes. "don't play dumb. you hold yourself in such high regard as a hero, but i would presume that most of hyrule would either blame you or aren't aware of your biggest failure. do they know that you couldn't stop the calamity the first time? that you let their champions die, and left the princess on her own to hold back the beast until you woke up from your little nap like a child? there's no way you could have beat calamity ganon with only a bow if you couldn't have beaten him at all the first time."
when revali looks back at link, he's immediately filled with regret. link is shaking — from the cold, from upset, from barely concealed anger, revali doesn't know — his eyes downcast and his jaw tight. his fists are clenched at his sides, knuckles turning white. revali shouldn’t have said that, an apology lining his tongue and his fingers twitching to reach out for link but instead, he resists and turns away.
“shut up,” link mutters. revali looks back and link is staring at him dead in the eye. the wide glimmering sapphires that revali has grown to be so fond of have disappeared, replaced by shards of clear blue glass accompanied by the growl of a wolf. it’s unsettling and revali should take it back and apologize, but he can’t shake the grasp of his pride.
“you know i’m right,” revali hears himself say and the regret burns like lava down his throat. link’s eyes darken, his brows furrowing deeper and his face morphing into one of fury and of betrayed anguish.
“do you really believe that?” link says, gritting his teeth, anger barely contained. revali only looks away. link scoffs in disbelief. “fuck you, seriously,” the little hylian spits, spins on his heel, and stalks away.
revali stares after him. he should move, he should be running after his precious jewel, should be holding him close and apologizing and doing everything to regain link’s forgiveness. he shouldn’t have said any of it. but his pride, curse it, keeps him staunchly in place like it’s attached weights to his ankles, imprisoning him in the cold bitter loneliness of the plunge.
“fuck,” revali whispers, when link disappears from his sight. “fuck. i really messed up."
that night, link doesn't return and the hammock feels emptier than it did the last time link disappeared. it heightens revali's anxiety, twisting and turning reaching out for his little songbird who's not there, who he's driven away. the emptiness is choking revali half to death.
the next day, link doesn't return either and when revali sets out to find him too, there's nothing. no tracks, no signs, no one has even seen link leave the tabantha frontier. revali's anxiety and guilt grows worse.
days pass, and link still hasn't returned, and revali still can't find him. he's taken to searching past hebra, into the hyrule ridge, the gerudo highlands, even near great hyrule forest. link isn't there and there aren't any signs of him.
on the sixth day since link disappeared, revali goes to the goddess statue in rito village and kneels before it with an offering of amber and rubies. "i know it's not much," he murmurs, placing the gems in front of the statue. "but it's all i can give. please protect link, wherever he is, and keep him warm. and please... let him come home to me unharmed. i'll take it from there."
nearly two weeks pass, and revali thinks he's actually going insane. since the champions' revival, he hasn't spent this much time away from link. he feels like he's dying again, but this pain is much worse than his first death. revali's search has extended now into hyrule field and the great plateau. his efforts are still fruitless.
it's not until he runs into urbosa and zelda at the ruins of hyrule castle, where attempts to restore the palace to its former glory have been started, that he drops in exhaustion from days of constant flying with barely any rest. the anxiety is still coursing strongly in his blood.
"revali!" urbosa shouts as revali lands, falling to his knees and crumpling into a ball on the ground. both her and zelda rush towards him, lifting him up and placing his arms around their shoulders. "what in the name of the goddesses has happened to you?!" they carry him to pieces of rotted stone that serve as makeshift benches to seat him upon. zelda rushes to go grab water as urbosa sits beside revali, letting him lean on her shoulder as he breathes heavily.
"urbosa," he whispers, desperate and tearful, "urbosa, i messed up really badly. i shouldn't have said any of that."
"what happened?" urbosa says, searching revali's face and taking in his disheveled appearance. "where's link? why isn't he with you?"
"i messed up," revali repeats, his voice shaking. "i said something i shouldn't have to him and now he's gone. i can't find him. i can't find him, urbosa, i drove him away and it's been weeks since then, it's all my fault."
"what did you say to him?" zelda says gently, having returned with a satchel of water.
"i told him he couldn't beat ganon with only a bow," revali whispers, the entire conversation flashing vividly in his mind like it has been for the last two weeks. "because he failed to beat him the first time, that he failed to save us and the princess, because how can he beat ganon with only a bow if he couldn't finish him off in one go the first time. i shouldn't have said that, and now he's disappeared because of me. shit i—" revali hunches over, curling in on himself, the guilt tearing a hole straight through his chest.
urbosa and zelda look at each other with shared grimaces, because yeah while it might have some truth to it, it's still pretty fucked up to say to link's face. at least revali recognizes that it's not a good thing to say at all. they help revali breath and stabilize before talking again.
"has this happened before?" urbosa says. "i figure you two must have had plenty of lovers' quarrels before."
"we've bickered, but we rarely ever fight," revali says softly. that surprises both urbosa and zelda. "we've only fought twice before this, and it never ended well. the last time was the first link disappeared, but he returned after five days and was in the forgotten temple during that time."
"the forgotten temple?" zelda says, face lighting up. urbosa gives her a stern look, because now is not the time and zelda shrinks a little, but her curiosity is still piqued.
"yes," revali says, staring into space. "he wanted to take you there, now that's he rid it of guardians. he thought you might appreciate it and want to study the ruins."
"that's... very kind of him," zelda murmurs, eyes shining in excitement. urbosa rolls her eyes, then speaks.
"do you think he might have returned there?" urbosa says.
"no, i've already checked," revali said, eyes downcast. "the guardians are gone, but he wasn't there either. he's never been gone this long..."
"i'm sure we'll find him," urbosa asserts. "if zelda and i find him before you do, we'll make sure to bring him directly to you." she places her hand on revali's shoulder, prompting him to look up at her. "fights between lovers like this happen. it's good that you've recognized how harsh your words were to him, but you still have to talk this out. you must be prepared to do everything you can if you wish to gain his forgiveness and to stay together as a coupling."
"of course," revali answers immediately, resolve returning and hardening his face. "do you take me for someone who gives up easily?" he turns and looks upward to the sky, and his voice softens. "my heart belongs to him now. i can only hope that still wishes to keep it with him." urbosa and zelda look at each other again, where zelda rolls her eyes and urbosa's lips twitch; sappy lovesick idiots.
revali decides to return home to rito village to rest. he's been flying constantly for two weeks searching for link and his efforts will continue to be fruitless if he's not in top condition. with food and water from zelda and urbosa, he thanks them and sets off to return home.
and would you imagine his shock when link is already back home in their roost, standing in the center. unlike the last time, he looks clean and well-rested, his hair rebraided (not as perfectly as revali's handiwork, but reminiscent of it; link has taken notes), and he's wearing his hylian tunic and pants rather than the snowquill armor he was wearing when they fought. a myriad of emotions swells in revali's chest, ready to burst out of his ribcage and splash all over the floor.
"hi," link says timidly. he won't look at revali in the eyes, his hands behind his back and one foot hooked around the ankle of the other. "sorry i was out so long. um—"
but revali doesn't let link finish his sentence, instead rushing forward to engulf link in his wings, hugging him tightly. link is home, he's here in revali's arms and he's safe and unharmed. "goddesses," revali whispers, tears threatening to spill. "you're going to be the death of me, link."
"sorry," link murmurs back, returning revali's tight embrace and burying his face in revali's neck. "i didn't think i would worry you this much."
"you were gone for two weeks, you absolute imbecile," revali whispers. "you disappeared without a trace, of course i'm going to worry. i searched almost half of hyrule for you, link, fuck."
"sorry, i—"
"stop apologizing," revali grunts, holding link tighter. "i should be apologizing. i shouldn't have said that to you. i regret it and i'm deeply sorry. it wasn't your fault that you couldn't defeat ganon the first time, it took us all by surprise. we had no idea that he'd infiltrate the beasts, or the guardians. none of us stood a chance with our disorganization and lack of power, so it wasn't only your fault. the blame should be shared by all of us. i really didn't mean it and i'm incredibly sorry, but i understand if you don't wish to forgive me."
"revali," link whispers back. "revali, it's okay."
"it's not, what i said was unbelievably fucked up, link. i don't even want to forgive myself for what i said. i was very harsh with you over something that wasn't a big deal and it drove you away from me. i don't ever want to cause you pain, and yet i've done it twice—"
"revali, stop, please," link says more firmly. he pulls back and looks at revali with a furrow in his brow. "i said it's fine. i forgive you, so please stop."
revali stares at link for a moment, before sighing and shutting his eyes. "alright," he relents. "but i really am sorry, link. you mean everything to me and i couldn't live with myself if i drove you away for good." he lifts link's face with both of his hands and presses their foreheads together, nuzzling link's nose and mouth with his beak as gently as possible. his sweet little songbird sighs and returns the gesture, cupping revali's face with his hands. they stay like that for a couple moments until link speaks.
"you're not calling me any nicknames," link murmurs, eyes still shut. revali makes a noise of question and link continues, but hides his face in revali's shoulder; he's embarrassed, revali realizes. "you're being too serious and calling me by my name... not calling me 'little jewel' or 'songbird' or shit like that..."
revali hums in amusement. "you want me to call you those things?" he feels link nod into his chest, hands clinging to his shoulders and armor. revali snorts. "alright, my love, i'll do as you wish." link hums, a light, happy sound and revali's heart flutters briefly. he wraps his wings a little tighter around link's waist. "where did you go this time?"
"a bunch of places," link mumbles. "i used the sheikah slate to warp, that's why no one saw me leave on foot. i went to hateno first, since they kept the house as mine even though i said they could use it to house other people. i slept there first because it was far from here, then i warped to the korok forest to talk to the great deku tree about... what you said." revali tenses but link reaches up to caress his beak, to tell him it's fine. "there's truth to it, you know, even if you want to deny it front of my face. the great deku tree told me all the heroes before me were able to stop ganon the first time; i'm the only one who failed at first and was given a second chance to finish him off. i'm the loser in this legacy." revali bristles at the self-deprecation, but link only chuckles softly. "you would have loved to hear me admit that out loud, before we became a thing."
"in the past, of course i would," revali grumbles. "it's different now."
"it's still true, whether you like it or not," link says softly. "and you're still right. letting you and the other champions die is one of my biggest regrets and failures, and i honestly don't think i'll ever really be able to forgive myself for it no matter how many times you forgive me. it was my one duty as the chosen hero and i fucked it up. i really did sleep in like a child and let zelda do all the heavy lifting."
link tilts his head so that his ear is on revali's chest instead of his face. "after that, i just kind of wandered around necluda doing some thinking and soul-searching. i went to kakariko to talk with impa about the same thing and she was really insightful and kind about it. then i went down to fort hateno and blatchery plain, where i died the first time."
revali tenses again, but link caresses his beak comfortingly again. "said hi to naydra at mount lanayru and prayed a little at the spring of wisdom. it reminded me of the day ganon was revived. did you know it was zelda's birthday that day? what a terrible birthday gift. went back down to hateno to help the farmers gather the new wheat and joined in on their harvest festival.
"then, i went to lurelin to watch the sunset. it's not as pretty as here, because it's in the southeast and the sun sets here in the west, but it was still nice. it made me miss you." revali blows air out of his beak and link giggles. "but i had one more stop before i decided to come home. i went to pray at the spring of courage, too."
"at wisdom, i understand," revali mutters and link swats his chest gently. "but why at courage?"
"for the courage to come home and face you like this," link replies softly. "i had to accept my fault and my failures, but it felt like shit, you know? you were right but i was having a hard time accepting it. they say the hero is blessed by the goddess of courage and that their spirits rest with her at her spring. so i went there and i prayed to all of them, to the goddess and heroes past, for acceptance, for forgiveness, for courage. thankfully, they granted it to me, because now i'm home with you and i'm at peace with what has happened."
link sighs. "i'm sorry it took so long for me to come back to you. believe me, i wanted to go back home to you too. but it wouldn't change anything if i came home with that still messing up my mind."
revali tilts link's chin up and presses their foreheads together again, and link's eyes shut as they graze each other's faces once more. "it's alright, little jewel," revali murmurs. "you can take all the time that you need. i'll still be here for you when you ready. though, i'd prefer if you told me where you were going first so i wouldn't have to pick the entirety of my plumage out of stress."
link laughs. "okay, i'll try to remember that the next time we fight. before i go fuck off to some random place in hyrule, i'll be sure to come back and let you know where i plan to go. 'hey 'vali, i know we just screamed at each other for an hour, but i'm gonna go hang out in gerudo town until we're down being mad at each other. cheers.' was that good?"
revali snorts. "gerudo town of all places, where men can't enter." link swats at his chest again, laughing. the rito only pulls link closer, keeping their foreheads pressed together. "i'd prefer it still if you stayed home." link hums, rubbing his thumbs against the gape of revali's beak, then reaches up to press his lips there.
"my heart's always at home with you," link whispers. "so no matter how far i am, i'll always be with you." he presses another kiss to revali's beak. "i love you, revali. i'll always be yours."
revali's eyes fall shut at the kiss and he chirps lowly. "my beloved songbird, i love you most. wherever you go, you have my heart with you."
they're so soft i'm crying ; ;; dumb stupid idiots in love with each other so bad, can't be away from each other for too long or else they start acting like they're gonna die... anyways yeah revali and link do not like to fight with each other like that past bickering like dummies because link is stubborn and revali is an asshole and both of their pride are bigger than the entirety of the hyrule landmass combined. if they were always fighting like that^, zelda would get so pissed she'd kill the both of them out of irritation.
🌡️ 6. What they would do if the other is sick?
i'll make this one shorter since i pretty much wrote two entire fics in that last number 😭 if you would like a fic version of this, let me know and i'll post that one to ao3 instead skdjfskjdf
both revali and link pretend that they're fine in the beginning and try to get on with their daily errands, but the difference between them is that revali will collapse after a day because he's dramatic and link will collapse after a week from exhaustion because he's an actual idiot.
revali is super dramatic about being sick, lying on the floor of their shared roost acting like he's going to die from illness meanwhile link is at the table, mixing herbs together to help with the symptoms and giggling at revali's antics. every time he bursts into sweet laughter, revali can't help but gaze fondly at his mate from the floor, falling in love with link a little more. link also still sleeps with revali in the hammock when he's sick and as a result, gets sick too. but even as he's coughing and sneezing in bed, link insists that getting sick for cuddles was worth it.
link hates it when revali molts though, because his feathers get fucking everywhere and he is sick of waking up with his mouth literally stuffed with revali's old feathers. they always move down to satori mountain right before revali's molt week because the warmer weather is better for his growing feathers and also because link doesn't like sleeping that close to revali because of the mouth-feathers. consequently, revali also hates molt week for this reason because he gets clingy and wants to cuddle link, but because of mouth-feathers, link doesn't want to cuddle. they're both suffering.
when link gets sick, he tries to push through the illness to keep running errands, train, and whatever is on his usual daily agenda. revali is not a fan of link being out of bed when he's sick, mostly because he instinctively wants to take care of his mate; to tend to link in the nest, feed him, preen him, and protect him as he recovers. link also likes being taken care of by revali, but he's also like. I promise tulin i'd train with him at the flight range today, and revali is like Too bad you're sick i'll tell teba to call off. even tulin is like "awh it's okay, master link! get better soon so we can train together! :>" and link wants to cry, because tulin is a cutie and he feels bad for having to call off. revali rolls his eyes and makes him get back in the hammock.
so what's new? nothing, because they're both dumb idiots when they're sick, as usual.

Hi, another lurking anon. I kept re-reading "Cooking is Communal" post- sorry if that's not the title. I was very curious on your views of Revali's lonely nature (his personality). He feels somewhat abstract to the rito culture...? Or I might be reading into it too much.. And based on the AU- where he is brought back to life, would Tulin try to look for a way to break that lonely aspect of his? I would ask more? But I do not want to overlwhelm. But thank you so much for the posts you do about the Ritos though, its always an enjoyable experience and makes me think a bit more.
hi, welcome! no need to apologise for anything, very glad the post ( which can be called anything you see fit ) resonated with you to a point where you'd follow up on it! and oh boy. you are not reading too much into it, i have A Lot to say about revali and whatever the heck he's got going on with him and his Issues — of which his loneliness is a huge part of — and how that interplays with his people's culture and his love for them as a whole.
just to preface before we get into it: thank you lots for sending this in and for your kind words!! genuinely, it makes me beyond happy to know that my rambling is appreciated ♡ don't be afraid to ask me more if you'd like, i promise you won't overwhelm me because i'm a verified sucker for discussing meta in-depth!
i touched on this in the tags of the mentioned post but to me, pre-calamity revali does come across as someone who denies a lot of things ( very evident ingame ) and also denies himself of a lot of things — especially when it comes to anything that could be significant interpersonally! there's very clear implications that he's been lonely, if not completely alone, for a great bulk of his life; there are even clearer walls he's built up to cope with this and ensure that nobody can ever see or acknowledge this.
to paraphrase some old disco ramblings: he feels like someone who clings so damn hard onto this image he's carefully crafted for himself to present to others — presented for so long that it's not just a second skin so much as it is something deeply embedded — so that nobody can possibly suspect he is in any way lacking. not in skills, or grit, or the ability to be anything but most especially a champion.
or, you know, in any meaningful company at all.
and he just doesn't have the resources, emotionally or otherwise, to really let any of that peek through? he is so vehemently against this idea that he is not enough for anyone, including himself — admitting that he's lacking in any sense aligns with that. there's this line from when i was still testing him out that still stands out to me because i think it really just captures him in this context nicely:
Revali was born chosen by no one. He learnt, very quickly, to choose himself. And now, here he is.
we will never know for sure what his early life was like! but given the hints, there like. had to be a point where he accepted all the hurts of being alone, where he stopped earnestly trying to seek company and approval and being wanted from/by others because the only constant he had was himself. all he needs, an idea that forms at an early age and follows him into older youth, is himself — he can't be unreliable, he can't be conditional.
i think by that time, his seeking turns into something more like ensuring, if i'm making sense? like i don't doubt he's always strived for neverending self-improvement — half-out of a legitimate want to be better and half-out of a desire for attention — but now he's determined to make a name for himself, to make anything for himself, so that nobody can ever skip their gaze over him again. this isn't look at me, this is don't ever look away.
so he just. won't seriously admit to himself that he wants anything more from anyone pre-botw, which constrains any effort — from others or himself — to get closer, and like...be real with each other. to form an actual relationship. he still feels these desires, he just refuses to acknowledge them and it makes me want to shake him in a jar!! self-isolation at its finest! he puts up grandiose airs and all this pomp, because who else can he trust to do it for him! who else can he trust to see his "real worth", even as that's exactly what he's trying to get others to do! this guy is not okay!!
and! regarding rito village and their culture back then: i don't think it deviates from what i currently have in mind for them, but pre-calamity rito village feels like...it is not the same as post-calamity rito village. i think their flock was definitely bigger in that there were more people present and settled in those peaks in revali's era ( compared to both dineli's or tulin's ), so while core values and teachings remain unchanged, the sense of community does not.
it's always intense, but like. post-calamity rito village had to deal with the severe loss and trauma that calamity ganon wrought with him, which tinges their emphasis on togetherness with a touch of this is essential to our survival ( which may actually be a repeat of what happened with dineli's flock, mid- and post-the imprisoning war ). when revali was born, i feel like the community was much like a rural town with the ties the villagers had with each other; when he died, it was more like a covert — in that the world is suddenly way smaller and everybody is connected to everybody for their own preservation. and this is carried on to future generations, a lasting idea of flocking together is above all a priority, even for their travellers who leave the village behind for extended periods of time. i. honestly think this might count as intergenerational trauma?
( seriously, they are not a long-lived folk, yet the calamity has left such an indelible mark on them?? i'm so emo about how revali did not ask for a memorial, he asked for the flight range because it would be useful for him in the present and also for his people in the future, but they gave him this tragic permanency anyway. it's not a celebration of what he did, it's a commemoration to what he couldn't do; saki literally says, of revali's landing, "so named in the hope that none might forget the events of that horrible day". what a mournful way to frame it?! )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that is all to say: it's very plausible that the rito village revali grew up in would allow a solitary, neglected or orphaned fledgling to slip through the cracks. and maybe it's only initially, maybe it's just too late, maybe the fledgling then coats his own cracks over with a self-made balm and decides he won't let anybody make him feel lonely again and shuts himself entirely off, but. as i mentioned in the other study post, his lack of relationships wasn't always his fault, though it probably becomes so as he grows much older.
AND THE THING IS, revali doesn't stop caring about everyone ( and when i say everyone, i mean his people ). he can't! he can convince himself that he has no care for their affections ( and sometimes, he even fails this. he even fails this. i think about that diary entry where he talks about proving himself to the world when "the world" has done shit all for him, and i think about how a good percentage of his perception of "the world" was still narrowed down to his home then ), but he still loves them a great amount.
( to clarify: he cares for them the way you'd care for someone from a distance. you don't really know them, and you probably or would probably get along with them even less, yet you want to keep them around anyway. )
that's just something he's been raised with, steeped in because it's part of his culture, and also just. he's seen practically everything his village has to offer: perhaps all the worst parts in living through the bitterness of being lonely amongst a flock, but also all the best parts! sorry, i know i went absolutely off on how isolated he must've been and felt, but realistically his life couldn't have all been utterly miserable. fleeting joys are still joys! shallow connection is still connection! that came out harsher than i meant but the point is he genuinely loves his home and culture and people, even if his way of proving it is unhealthy and derives from a place that he definitely needs to go to therapy for ( i.e. his love for them is bound to his perceived self-worth. he has to "earn" his "right" to love them by excelling at what he does best, by being special enough, because he's unconditional with himself but they aren't! they aren't )!!
vaguely related, but this is, for me, why he never stops chasing achievements in combat. like ever. it's why rest/inaction forced by his severe injuries in the au where he survives is debilitating in more ways than one and emotionally frays him to a near-breakdown-turned-actual-breakdown. speaking of that, though!
yes!! yes, yes, tulin would absolutely be doing his best to bring revali back into their fold and make sure he stays there! you can see it in-play in my first thread with buck ( whose positively glorious revali can be found @/galestrings ♡ ); he's a kid who just so wholeheartedly believes in revali's goodness, refuses to not see the best of all his qualities, and so incessantly follows after him to Bond!!
i won't speak too much on this because i do want to continue seeing it play out with any revalis who would be willing to explore this with my tulin, but in connecting with him — even on a surface-level — i imagine that might provide a bridge to connecting with the rest of the village too! ( and it doesn't have to start with tulin, but i like my master-disciple bonds too much to let it not, in the case of my take on revali asflsd )
ANYWAY YEAH, that's what i have to say on this stupid bird vis-a-vis his loneliness!! god if you made it here without skipping over anything, i'm blowing you some friendly kithes. mwah mwah! hope i haven't chased you away with this, i'd love to hear your thoughts and receive more questions if you were so curious! thank you so much again for sending this in!! ♡

POV for the ask game!
ask game here!
another one from my fluffy miphvalink oneshot:
Revali held Mipha's hand tighter, entwining their fingers together and spinning under Mipha's arm. A task made slightly difficult by sharp talons on a tiled floor, but all this ballroom dancing was worth it for the bright, toothy smile on Mipha's face.
"See, this is fun, right?" said Mipha as they moved back together to twirl across the dance floor.
"...It's enjoyable enough," Revali allowed, though he knew Mipha could hear the undisguised warmth in his voice.
The song drew to a close. Revali cast his gaze around the room, instinctively searching for a certain head of blond hair--and found Link not at the buffet with Daruk as he always was during these kinds of parties, but conversing with a circle of lavishly-dressed Hylians. Or, rather, seemingly trapped in conversation, by the way Link was edging backward from the others, expression troublingly blank.
"I'm going to rescue our partner from his adoring fans," Revali told Mipha. "If you don't mind entertaining yourself for awhile?"
"By all means," said Mipha, and so Revali crossed the dance floor to the edge of the room, to where one of those Hylian aristocrats was rambling on, utterly oblivious to Link's shoulders drawing tighter and tighter.
Revali swept in to stand next to Link, curling his wing around Link's upper arm. Link's expression turned to a smile of relief, and that, too, made warmth unfold in Revali's chest.
"I hate to interrupt the revelry," Revali said to the noble he'd interrupted, and didn't bother to sound sorry at all. "But I'm sure you'll let me have my partner here."

Read, and loved, 'only say my name' (I'm too shy to comment publicly though, sorry). Anyway. Its 3:17 in the morning and your writing and characterization make me go feral, as is customary. Your writing takes root in the smallest crevices of Canon and takes your readers on an exploration that, this time, is (ahem) an unexpectedly wild but enjoyable ride through disaster bird relationship insecurities central. 10/10, hurt in the best possible way. I am incoherent about it. Kudos, and take care!
Hello hello! Please don't feel shy for contacting on anon -- my own beloved Ly had to congratulate me for daring to publish this fic under my name-- (I had been going back and forth on using a pseud or going anon, until I decided that my writing style is far too much of a giveaway.)
If there are any crevices of canon to have been delved into, this time, it is (metaphorically) more in the vein of TOTK style re-writing of BOTW/AoC's landscape. I must confess that AoC's failure to adjust Link's character trajectory to account for his lack of the Master Sword, confounded by the frankly unbelievable "we mistook you for monsters" plotline of the early Rito arc, were the two primary factors that led to me devising this particular plotline...
The insecurities are half the fun, I think, when it comes to revalink in general and revali in particular, and while I do appreciate that this story must have a succession of misgivings - from the tags to the summary to the pain of its ending - i'm still so glad to have let myself write it, and I might just try my hand at marginally less angsty/angry stuff in the future. 💜

Rito Village is always a little on the cold side, especially at night, but now it’s getting even colder. This just makes being snuggled up in Revali’s wings every night even more enjoyable, especially if we have a warm blanket too.
“Yes, I agree. During the summer months, cuddling with April can get hot depending on the weather. Fall is much preferable to that and winter... *sighs* Well, she calls me her personal heater for a reason.”
Hehe, sorry, Vali! Can you blame me when your feathers are always so warm??
“I suppose not.” (despite this, he looks rather pleased)

I MUST ASK how you think Age of Calamity did Daruk dirty?? Not tryna start anything just curious :0
Well per those tags that you’re talking about, I was actually talking about how Breath of the Wild did Daruk dirty. Like you can’t sit here and tell me that the same level of effort that went into Revali and Mipha with all their nuances and flaws and details and development was the same for Daruk. It just blatantly isn’t true. He is a enjoyable character and I love him, but he just isn’t well written. Nintendo just let him be comic relief and DIDNT bother to develop him into anything further. Name one meaning character flaw that Daruk has. And I say meaningful because 1) Dogs don’t count because that was again played for comic relief and the writers failed to set a tone for that to make me take it seriously and 2) there honestly, as brutal as a truth it may be, isn’t anything important or meaningful about Daruk from a story perspective.
Look I’m SORRY ok I love Daruk I do I swear to god. But if you cut Daruk from the story... what changes? You can’t cut Urbosa because she’s an integral part to Zelda’s development. You can’t cut Mipha because her storyline is meant to reveal the important aspects of love and choice and duty that is an important part of the themes in that game. You can’t cut Revali because his character is meant to foil the perspectives of Link and Zelda for the themes of responsibility, and power. There’s an essay I’ll share when I finish that better highlights how these three characters are important to expressing the themes of botw but long story short, of you remove those characters, it’s either removes a vital plot point, or removes an important perspective on the themes of the game, or even both! For Daruk however, that just doesn’t exist at all. He adds nothing substantial to the story, plot or theme wise. Yes, his connection to Yunobo is important for YUNOBO’S arc, but Daruk literally could just be some statue or nameless ancestor and you could write Yunobo the same. Daruk himself, as a character, isn’t important, because he’s not written as more than comic relief, which is WILD considering he is of a lil tiny bit of significance considering he is uhhh lemme check my notes here, oh yeah, he’s one of the FOUR PILOTS THATS SAVE THE WORLD

ok i still havent gotten the secret ending but farming for it might take me a bit so im gonna make a thoughts post for age of calamity now:
Major spoilers obvs so ill put it under a read more
things i enjoyed:
revali beatdown simulator
the controls for the divine beasts are a bit clunky, but i think the angles they used for them did an excellent job at really making the player feel like we were actually controlling a divine beast. so i think it was done well.
link’s personality really gets to shine full force in this game with the amount of cut scenes and it was wonderful to see
every character clearly had a lot of love put into how they operate. they truly all feel unique, & all of their play styles fit them really well in my opinion
the game does a really good job of making you understand what a real threat the monsters are. like in botw they’re intimidating at first, but once you’re far enough into the game they become just an inconvenience to work around if anything. this game managed to actually make certain monsters intimidating for me again, and i think that’s a real accomplishment
the blight battles are actually somewhat challenging in this game and that is truly a commendable achievement lol i think all the bosses are good tbh. i didnt rly dislike or not enjoy any of them.
the way daruk and link’s friendship & urbosa’s motherly relationship towards zelda got to shine was. so good. it’s all i could’ve ever wanted
seeing the descendants again was really nice & it was awesome to see the champions interacting with them!! especially sidon and mipha omggggg. that was. really fucking good shit
kohga. just. kohga in general. getting to see more of him was really rad, he’s such a fun guy! and his english va was Excellent. you could really tell he was having a lot of fun playing him, and it was lovely to see! :)
zelda getting to really shine in this game was also lovely to see. and her being so assertive and badass by the end? omg. it was so wonderful especially after botw. man.
the combat is done very well imo. im rly glad that they took so many elements from botw, but also added their own flares to make it feel fresh. it was rad.
sidon’s tagline is “winning smile” and his power is “boundless optimism” and i think that’s beautiful
the music in this game is SOOOOO good oh my god. multiple times during playing i had to pause to just appreciate it. it’s pretty much all remixes of botw with a few originals for the new characters, but they all slap. there was not a single song in this game i didn’t like. it is definitely one of my favorite video game soundtracks officially. maybe one of my favorite overall soundtracks in general tbh.
the visuals obviously look just like botw, but it still looked fucking gorgeous at some points. like. man. they really went off to make it look not only faithful to botw as far as appearance goes, but also as far as capturing botw’s beauty and it was. excellent to see!
if anything is true to botw’s backstory, it’s definitely how op link is. cause he was established to be op in botw, & when u finish botw he is also op as hell. he is so fun to play as the higher leveled he gets. he absolutely kicks ass. especially with a two-handed weapon??? daaaaammmmnnn. thats my badass baby boy!!!!
link eating rocks not once, but TWICE. just showing PEAK gremlin energy. 10/10 for those scenes they were great
the ending was really beautiful actually and i did cry like a little baby for it what about it
things i didn’t like:
obviously first and foremost.. this is not the game we were advertised. and no matter how much i overall enjoyed the game, it will always have some layer of being tainted attached to it due to the false advertising. this is not the prequel we thought we’d be getting. & not using “prequel” specifically doesn’t matter when all the advertising, including the box art talks about this being the story of what happened 100 years ago. with no indication it wasn’t the story of what happened 100 years ago in the botw timeline, but a separate universe/timeline entirely. i do hope we get dlc for the game at some point giving us what we were advertised, but at the same time... rly wish that the story that’s in the final game was dlc, & the story we were promised was the original :/ or just having the game have two separate storylines originally would’ve been cool. i just wish it wasn’t falsely advertised.
fort hateno can fucking eat my whole entire shit WHY is that part so needlessly obnoxious compared to everything else oh my god
being forced to fulfill revali’s power fantasy TWICE hurt my soul
fuck any mission where you have to protect the useless hylian guards. i hate them. they suck.
the ai for player characters when you aren’t playing as them can also be pretty useless. it was really frustrating failing missions because my fellow party members weren’t helping me, and i was basically expected to be in two places at once to get shit done myself. :/ ik you can just switch between characters to make it easier, but like. i like playing as link the most. he’s my favorite character, & ofc since he’s mandatorily played for most of the story, he’s gonna be the most leveled up character regardless so he’s just the best to play as in general especially for harder missions. it was annoying to be forced to play as other people Solely cause the ai was so useless.
king rhoam’s attempt at a redemption arc. i’m not sorry that i just fucking hate this man. i don’t mind him entirely in botw bc you can see clear, genuine remorse during the cut scene at the end of the great plateau. but the redemption arc he gets in this game? after all the fucking shit he does in this game? especially when after his ~redemption arc~ i had to sit through a cut scene of him being an absolute fucking asshole to baby zelda after her mother just died????? absolutely fuck that shit. i don’t appreciate that crap at fucking all. he’s a verbally abusive piece of shit and i hate his guts.
obviously there was gonna be some retconning of how certain things worked in botw in order to make this kinda game work but the way sheikah technology works in this game is so goddamn confusing i do not get it. the works of botw are never outright said or explained completely, but it’s straightforward enough that it doesn’t really matter. this game does try to explain certain things and it just becomes. really clunky and confusing very quickly.
the story is alright, i guess, but..... really confusing/convoluted as hell at times to a point that it’s. really fucking distracting. especially in comparison to how straightforward botw’s story is. like..... cannot help but be annoyed that such a problem wouldn’t have been a thing if they stuck to botw’s story.
i was sad when the egg thing died but i dont like the egg thing.... it is the MAIN reason shit was retconned so much & i just. dont get its purpose. but i did really like the reveal that zelda made it herself. that was good shit!
also the egg glitched out like. a LOT. idk what the fuck was going on with the poor thing but there was multiple times during a cut scene or when i was just sitting there that it was freaking out in the background and it was rly weird
elemental overworld boss monsters................. obnoxious. especially elemental guardians like goddamn bro what the fuck
i know warriors’ games aren’t about exploring anyway but the limitations for exploring was really sad/frustrating. this is still somewhat the world of hyrule before the calamity, which is something we’ve always wanted to see. not being able to explore even the immediate area at certain points because of shit like timed missions was really upsetting, man. :( i just wanted to see hyrule castle Before the calamity why was did they have to rob us like that.....
creepy corrupted egg’s transformation. why. what was that. what the fuck
even though i did enjoy the boss fights, it did get. incredibly taxing eventually to have to fight the SAME bastards so many times. like yeah botw is also guilty of this with the blights, but goddamn.... at least i have a choice to avoid certain encounters with them? this game has you fighting the same bitches like upwards of 3-4 times. it was. really annoying tbh. like the fights themselves are enjoyable, but damn we added new characters and it still inevitably lacked variety in boss fights.
no playable kass >:( if he’s available later in dlc then fine but i wish he was playable in the original game. so many random choices you’d never expect are. why couldn’t he also be there >:(
overall:
it will forever have that sour taste for the false advertising attached to it unfortunately, but that aside, i overall did enjoy the game! i think it has a lot to love in spite of the issues i encountered. as someone who has this as their first warriors game as well, it did lend itself to letting me see the appeal of them. idk if i’ll get more, but i do get why they’re so beloved/popular now. it was an alright time, with some amazing highlights that i’m gonna think back on very fondly for a very, very long time. if i had to rate it..... 7/10

Can I ask for some Revali x Reader fluff with them cuddling on a cold night, and then the Reader calls Revali handsome and he floofs up in embarrassment in an adorable way?
Flustered Revali is the best Revali. This request is adorable and I hope I did it justice! Please enjoy and thank you for the request!!
Soft Feathers
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild
Revali x Reader
Summary: During a cold night in Rito Village you find it difficult to fall asleep due to the extremely handsome features of a certain Rito right in front of you.
The usual cold nights of Rito village would’ve been unbearable if it wasn’t for the fact that you were laying on the Rito Champion himself. His hammock was sizeable enough so you both could comfortably enjoy each other’s company while gently sleeping. The lack of armor on Revali’s body made laying on top of him even more enjoyable as you nuzzled closer to him, sighing in delight. His body kept you warm as he had one of his wings on your back.
However for some reason you had trouble falling asleep. The exact reason was unknown to you and you had just been examining Revali’s stunning features. Your eyes completely lost themselves in his peaceful face, his breathing steady and comforting. A single hand found its way to his face and a smile crept onto your face as he slightly leaned into your touch in his sleep. You wanted to show your appreciation by doing something but you were nervous since you didn’t want to possibly disturb his much needed sleep.
However you couldn’t resist the urge to quickly kiss him on the tip of his beak, an action you did fairly often anyway. You carefully lean in until your lips briefly touch his beak, before returning to your previous position, still keeping your eyes on him. Your actions made his feathers puff up ever so slightly and also made him shift in his sleep which you had most definitely interrupted.
One of his eyes shot open, his brows frowning soon after. He sighed and looked around briefly before speaking. “What are you doing?” His voice was raspy and sleepy. His feathers hadn’t completely settled down yet so he must’ve felt you kissing him. You innocently looked from side to side while tilting your head. “Oh.. Nothing..” You say in an unusually high pitched voice. Revali merely rolled his eyes at your response. He wasn’t a horrible liar but he was still avoiding your gaze, seemingly trying to play it cool. “Then sleep.” He closed his eyes seemingly ready to fall back to sleep. What he didn’t notice however was your playful smirk.
“Oh but how can I possibly sleep when you look so handsome from this angle?” Revali’s feathers became even more puffed up as soon as your compliment reached his ears. You giggled at his reaction while he merely groaned in annoyance and avoided your gaze. He was adorable. You snuggle against his now soft feathers while looking at him. “Aww is the all mighty Rito Champion flustered??” Revali clicked his tongue and was trying to act unbothered but his fluffy feather once more told a different story. “Stop it. You’re distracting me.” A small laugh erupts from your throat. Oh you wanted to tease him more. You run your hands along his chest, feeling his soft feathers between your fingers. “You’re adorable..”
“Do you wish to sleep on the floor?” You notice his frustration and take it as a sign to stop. Sighing, you lay your head against his chest. “I’m sorry Vali..” The expression you hold is merely acting apologetic as you had too much fun just now. Revali merely scoffs at you and closes his eyes in an attempt to fall asleep. His feathers reverted back to their original form which made you frown in disappointment.
“What a shame.. I wanted to sleep on your soft and fluffy feathers.. They were so adorable..”
“Shush now (Name).”
He silences you before your words cause him to get embarrassed again which wouldn’t do any good for his pride. He would get his revenge on you someday but for now, he wanted nothing more than to sleep with you cuddling on top of him. Maybe he would make his feathers puff up on purpose just for you.

Champion’s chains
Tumblr media
|| At The Royal Ball || Meme Starter || Accepting ||
@aerialarcher: "Can we go home?"
Tumblr media
The Champions Ball was an event which many had been looking forward to for some months time. After all, the royal family so seldom threw such fanciful affairs these days. Some odd years ago, they had planned on a grand soiree to celebrate the princess’s step into her divine power, her blessing bestowed by the Goddess Hylia.
That soiree never ended up happening, though.
Perhaps that was why so much pomp and grandeur had gone into the singular night of celebration. The ceremony which honored the Champions had been both dignified and humbling. The feast had been delectable, food and wine flowing plentifully. And the dance— oh, the dance— one would think Calamity Ganon was no longer a threat, citizens twirling and laughing as though they were already victorious.
Yet not everyone enjoyed the night with such vigor. In an ironic twist not quite lost on Zelda, it seemed the Champions for which the Champions Ball was held enjoyed it the least, with the exception of perhaps Daruk. Link was quiet as ever. Mipha seemed uncomfortable among numerous prodding questions. Urbosa had spent much of the evening trying to avoid the King, and Revali...
                 "Can we go home?"
For his part, he had stayed patient for an awfully long time. Zelda turned to look at him and, despite everything, couldn’t contain the hint of amusement in her eyes. At least with Revali, no words were left unsaid. There was no need to worry about what he could be thinking, for he would simply tell her, regardless of what formalities deemed polite. It was refreshing.
Tumblr media
“I’m already home,” she pointed out with a wry smile, then let out a breath that held a chuckle and sigh. “I’m sorry, Revali. I know this isn’t very enjoyable for you, but I would appreciate it if you could stay a few hours longer. My father plans on honoring the Champions one last time before the night is through. Is there anything I can do to improve your evening, aside from sneaking you out of the castle gates?”

20, 21, 25!!! for the ask game, please 💖 [also, hiii!!!]
thank you!!!! (also hii!!) i fuckign love video gaem im nerd
20 and 21. Book that would make a good game + Show/movie that would make a good game?
FUCK uhhhh first some reason my first thought was Artemis Fowl but I.... don’t think that would actually work.
Okay, what’s really interesting is storytelling in different mediums, and one problem with taking a story that is written for a book or a show or a movie, is that it is written for that format. There are some that would make the transition pretty well, even though it might sacrifice parts of the story. Like, it’s harder to get thoughts or feelings a character has without awkward narration, and usually impossible to get good facial expressions or subtle body language cues and that kind of thing.
I’m mostly talking written/screen to video game, but there are also notable differences between books and tv/movies that are probably why most adaptations are so infamously bad. Things like the amount of information that can be compressed for consumers of the media, the type of information such as inner thoughts/feelings and random worldbuilding details, and pacing. Both mediums have their strengths and weaknesses--the screen can be more immersive, and show you really cool ways of looking at things, and also allow for certain silent dialogue like body language or just more subtle implications (such as background characters behaving a certain way or expressions gone unmentioned) but also they can’t really do things that books can.
Video games have their own strengths and weaknesses, too. The interactive medium allows for all sorts of cool things you just absolutely cannot do in the same way in these other mediums. My favorite is probably environmental storytelling and the ways you can get stories across both purely from the setting around you (like in the Fallout game I forget the name of with the underwater city, or in Breath of the Wild with the ruins scattered around Hyrule, or basically all of Hollow Knight’s storytelling) and from little bits of scattered lore that you have to piece together into your own interpretation of what happened. (Again, Hollow Knight does this amazingly.)
So like, some stories can benefit from that, particularly either stories with a strong setting with good worldbuilding to base that on, or stories that would benefit from adding that yourself (although people might argue on whether it counts as canon or not).
So the question is to really think about what kind of books, tv shows, and movies can benefit from being directly interacted with and even changed by the player, what ideas can play out through simple environments a player can move around or in small boxes of flavor text to be pieced together, what stories can be conveyed that can benefit from being actively sought out rather than directly fed to the person consuming them. Something like Artemis Fowl doesn’t work, because there’s a set linear narrative and the choices that are made rightfully should be set. While a game completely separate from the Artemis Fowl stories with its own characters simply set in Haven City could be really interesting (such as the life of a LEP officer who isn’t famous and tangling with humans constantly, or even the life of a dwarf or a goblin or whatever, perhaps even with multiple choices of class and species--?) it wouldn’t really be an Artemis Fowl adaption so much as a spin off or addition to the universe. It could be really interesting, as for a cool as fuck city of fairies Haven City isn’t really discussed or explored all that much, but it wouldn’t be a true adaptation. It’d be inspired by, if anything.
I honestly can’t think of any books/movies/tv shows off the top of my head that necessarily would make a good game.
There are a few I could see being mildly fun--perhaps a sci fi survival game based on The Martian, a Mission: Impossible spy game, or (and I think this would be fun, tbh) a fantasy/mystery retrieval game based on The Librarians or Warehouse 13. I wouldn’t even mind seeing what a skilled game designer could do with A Series of Unfortunate Events, although I’d have no idea where to start.
The problem is mostly those stories being kind of linear and set. The player can’t really affect them, so to be effective it’d be better if it was a new story entirely merely in that universe, rather than just an adaptation of the original canon. For example, playing Lord of the Rings simply would not be the same as watching it or reading it. There’s no way to really make it organic or have that same amount of emotion.
While it’s not impossible to have a linear set story for a player to follow (See The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which has issues, but is definitely playable and enjoyable) it’s not really the same if you not only know the whole story but feel like you’re not actually part of it. You can have quick time events to see if Bilbo really got the the ring, or a sequence where you play as Legolas mowing down orcs, but it won’t really be the same.
Sorry for the long and unnecessarily pretentious answer, this is just something I’ve been really interested in lately so I overthought it like hell.
25. What power-up or ability would you want irl?
Real answer: shapeshifting. This is cheating as it’s more superpower than actually video game related, but like, still.
But answering more properly to the spirit of the question... The things that come to mind for me are Revali’s Gale (just fucking whooshes into the air lmao), Shape of Unn charm (turns into snail and wiggle lol), and Shade Cloak (nyooms through things by becoming a shadow).
Wait, actually, forget all that. I want to be Link from Link Between Worlds, turning into a painting and shit for fun. That sounds rad as hell. Look at me, I’m a cool funky little crayon drawing. Sike! I’m 3D now!

After Ganon Part Two
Zelda awoke in an unfamiliar room, daylight breaking through the window to her left. The bed she occupied felt soft as the goose down beds of Hyrule Castle... Or what was once the castle. Below her pots and pans clanked, a sizzling faintly calling her to the cure for her empty stomach. At the foot of the bed were her new folded clothes, their blue and white pattern reminiscent of her old blouse, but padded with heavier material. The pants were a strong leather, with metal kneecaps and a pair of good boots to match them, metal greaves reinforcing the shoes. Changing quickly into the well tailored clothes, Impa having remembered her fittings after so long apart, Zelda made her way downstairs. A stair creaked beneath her foot. Link spun in an instant with a butcher’s knife in hand... Only for it to clatter against the floor when he met her eyes. The knight looked down to his hand in horror and Zelda crossed the kitchen floor to pull him into a tight embrace. Over his shoulder she saw the finely chopped ingredients of whatever he had been cooking. Did he always know how to cook? Link’s arms came around her, and although she was the one comforting him, Zelda couldn’t help but feel safe in the circle of her champions arms. She stroked the back of his head slowly. “It’s okay, it’s okay. I understand. It’s okay.” They parted, Link smiling thankfully as he returned to the simmering concoction on his stove. “What are you making Link?” The princess inquired, taking a seat at the table and looking around with interest at the house of her champion. Upon the walls were weapons and shields of legendary might, enchanted bows, swords of great magic and science. Nestled between an Ancient Shield and a Savage Lynel Shield was a simple Pot Lid, something that made Zelda chuckle. Link took the recipe he was following from the counter beside him and handed it over to his guest as way of an answer. “Hearty Salmon Meunière?” The princess asked with raised eyebrows. “How long have you been cooking for?” Link cocked his head and smiled in confusion, jostling his damp hair. “Not long, I wanted to have some food ready before you woke up.” Zelda giggled, “No, I mean when did you start learning to cook like this?” Her champion frowned, plating her meal up carefully. The young woman waited patiently, knowing that Link would speak once his thoughts were organized. “When I woke up, Hyrule was gone and I didn’t know anything or anyone. I just knew I had to fight, to survive, to save you.” He put the meal in front of her, along with a knife and fork. He waited for her to begin eating before speaking again. “I had to cook my own food, so I figured I should learn to make it an enjoyable experience.” “Are you not going to eat?” Zelda asked in concern, but Link only smiled as he gestured to a dirty plate beside the stove. “Oh you already ate... What time is it?” Link chuckled. “You were very tired. you slept from noon yesterday until... I think it’s almost sunset.” Zelda’s eyes widened in surprise, her mouth filled with salmon and the delicious sauce that Link had made for it. No wonder she was so hungry! The princess swallowed her food and looked sheepishly at Link, who was delighted to see her wolf down his cooking in a far from refined manner. “I’m sorry.” She said, taking a cloth from the center of the table and dabbing at her mouth and chin. “My manners are atrocious.” Link shook his head emphatically. “Food must be good.” He said with a wink, smiling at Zelda’s laughter. The meal passed in companionable quiet, Zelda complimenting Link’s cooking at many points and Link blushing at many points. When she was done the princess picked up her plate and and collected Link’s dish, before looking around in confusion. Link stood up and tried to take the dishes from her. “No, I want to help.” Zelda insisted. “Where do you wash up?” Link stood for a moment, amused and appreciative that the princess was offering to, for what Link assumed was the first time in her life, wash dirty dishes rather than have him do it for her. He shrugged and opened the front door, grabbing his pot, pan, and a bar of soap from the shelf beside the door on his way past. Outside he gave Epona a pat as he passed her and squatted by the pond, scooping sand into a pot, soaping the water, and then scouring it vigorously. Zelda watched him for a few moments, then mimicked them. They washed in silence, before Zelda huffed. “Surely there’s an easier way?” “Hot water and a wire scrubber clean things faster.” Link nodded. “I don’t like using wire brushes though, they scratch the plates and cookware.” “Did you learn all of this after you woke?”  Link nodded, his movements practical and efficient.  “When did you buy this house?” Zelda asked curiously, quietly noting the room at the back of said house.  “I had been journeying for two months, crossed the Gerudo Desert, climbed to the peaks of the Hebra Mountains.” Link put his cleaned dishes to the side, taking cutlery from the pile beside Zelda without a struggle. “I was getting stronger, saved Vah Naburis and Vah Ruta, but each time I was hurt or exhausted and crawled back to a stable or a nearby town it didn’t feel quite right...” Link turned and shaded his eyes from the setting sun, looking towards the colourful, boxy houses across his bridge. “The people who live there, Bolson and Karson, along with my friend Hudson, built this house and gathered almost all of the furniture in it for... A fair price.”  “How much is a fair price?” Zelda frowned, concerned that he had been swindled.  “I could afford it well enough.” Link shrugged. “Rupees weren’t important to me at the time, I was focused on getting stronger and freeing the Divine Beasts.”  Zelda’s next question was cut off, as light footsteps hit the wooden slats of Link’s bridge at a rapid pace. Link stood up and took his washed dishes back to the house, with a curious princess in tow. A child was knocking on Link’s door frantically, crying as she did so. “MISTER LINK! MISTER LINK PLEASE I NEED HELP!”  “Mister Link” quickly rushed to her side. “Aster calm down! What’s wrong, you’re meant to be home by now.”  Aster drew in a ragged breath, tears and snot running down her face. “The monsters took Teebo!” Link’s comforting expression became thunderous in a moment, his muscles stiffening as he firmly held Aster’s shoulders. “Where did they take him Aster? Which direction? Quickly!” “W-we were playing in Mi-Midla Woods.” Aster croaked, wiping at her face. “And they came out of the trees, a big monster took Teebo and ran towards the big tower, the blue one!” Link nodded and dashed inside the house to arm himself, Zelda knelt down and hugged the girl to her. “Shhhh, it’s going to be okay, Link will find him.”  “Th-they eat people!” Aster cried into the princess’s shirt. “It’ll be my fault, it was my idea to play hide and seek!” “No no, you mustn’t say that.” Zelda said, rocking gently from side to side. “This is no one’s fault but the monsters who took your friend. It is because of you that he could be saved.” Link burst from the house at a dead sprint, rushing past Zelda and Aster, trusting in the princess to keep the child safe and calm. The champion’s pace did not let up, not when he rounded the house, crossed the paddock, or when he approached the cliff beyond.  He jumped, Revali’s Gale catching his glider as he swung it above his head and launching him into the sky. Zelda gasped behind him, shocked to see Revali’s power lift Link upwards, but she quickly overcame her shock to attend to Aster.  Link was flying, wind whipping at his clothes and hair, the Bokoblin Tree Fort rapidly coming into focus before him. His eyes scanned the space quickly, accounting for the three Bokoblins (Two red, one blue) and the larger Moblin. Link growled under his breath, the damn thing had skin too dark to be blue and in its hands was a sack. A sack that moved. Link landed behind their lookout, a red Bokoblin that squealed as Link ran it through with his glowing Ancient Sword, turning on the balls of his feet to arc his blade around and pass through its blue friend’s neck. Above him the last Bokoblin squeaked in fear and scrambled for its bow, but the Hero had already found his own. An arrow buried into the flesh between that monster’s eyes, and another slammed into the black Moblin’s spine, the creature grunted and turned, dropping the sack in surprise.  Good. Thought Link. Now I don’t have to worry about hurting Teebo. The Moblin ran at him with a bellow of rage, its claymore coming down in a vicious swing that Link nimbly ducked under and rolled behind, his Ancient Sword flaring once more as he cut a path across the monster’s back. The beast roared as the arrow wound Link had given it moments before was sliced with that burning weapon. The Moblin swung a desperate and wide sweep with its sword, catching Link’s left arm to the Hero’s surprise and chagrin. Pressing the advantage, the monster stepped forwards and gripped the claymore in a double handed manner that... Left it wide open. Link surged forwards and the point of his sword found the soft flesh under that Moblin’s chin, unhindered there it continued up into the massive creature’s brain.  Right in the off switch. Link grimaced as his sword shattered from the strain.  Wasting no time, he ran to the upper platform, taking his dagger from its sheath and carefully cutting open the sack.  “TAKE THIS!” Teebo screamed, slamming his tiny fist into Link’s jaw.  The champion rolled with the punch, trying to save Teebo’s knuckles as best he could, still the young lad left out a pained yelp as his fist connected with the chiseled stone of Link’s face.  The hero rubbed at his mouth indignantly, but with a twinge of pride. He noticed Teebo’s glasses by the boy’s feet and bent down to pick them up, wary this time of the boy’s powerful martial arts.  Gently, but still with some haste, Link slipped the glasses back onto Teebo’s head and stepped back. The boy blinked as his eyes adjusted, but they flew wide as he finally recognized the kind young man that lived across the bridge.  “Mi-Mister Link?” He said, tears welling in his eyes as he rushed forwards to cling onto his rescuer’s side. “MISTER LINK!”  Link laughed, more in relief and to assure Teebo that it was okay, that he was alright, than out of any particular humour in the situation. “Hey there T-man.” “I’m sorry! I’m sorry Link!” Teebo sobbed as Link picked him up and carried him down from the fort, careful to avoid the monster remains.  Huh, that’s weird. Link thought to himself. Their bodies haven’t disappeared. “Sorry for what T-man?” Link asked jovially, swinging the boy around so that he was seated on the hero’s shoulders.  “For- For hitting you.” Teebo said, sniffling as he tried to stop crying.  “Teebo, if I wanted to be friends with anyone, it’s the kid that comes out of a sack ready to punch monsters.” Link told him, reaching up to pat the boy’s side. “You’ve got a mean right hook, if I didn’t flinch you’d have taken my head off.”  “My hand hurts.” Teebo replied simply.  “They do that, after you hit someone.” Link chuckled. “You should thank Aster when we get back, she ran all the way to my house so that we’d know you were in trouble.”  “I th-thought Bolson went home when it started getting dark?” Teebo asked, wiping his nose on his sleeve. “Oh that’s right, you were off with Azu when I got back.” Link muttered. “I have a friend staying with me, I think you’ll like her, T-man.”  “Is she from Lurelin?”  Link scanned the forest as they passed through, wary of any opportunistic monsters that may have heard the fight. “Noooo... She’s from the castle.”  “The castle?” Teebo asked suspiciously. “No one is from the castle, monsters live there.” “Not anymore.”  “What do you mean not anymore?” “I made them go away.” Link hedged. “Like the monsters that took you.” Teebo, atop the shoulders of a man that had just beaten more monsters than he had seen in his life, thought on this for a moment. “So she’s from the castle?” Link smiled. “Why don’t I tell you about it tomorrow? Tamana must be out of her head worrying about you.” “Promise?” “Promise. We’ll play tag afterwards yeah?” Back in the village, Link found Tamana’s house empty, and her Cuccos untended. Sighing, the champion decided to take Teebo to Aster, so that she knew he was safe.  They were barely halfway across Link’s bridge when a cry of “TEEBO!” came from the house, and both Tamana and Aster rushed to the boy. Seeing his mother and friend brought fresh tears to the youngster’s eyes and he ran to his mother’s embrace, Aster joining the hug as Tamana held her son close.  The young mother looked up to Link from where she clutched Teebo as the champion stepped closer. “Thank you, by the Goddess thank you Link. If anything had happened to him I wou-” “Don’t worry Tamana.” Link quickly interrupted, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. “Teebo had it wrapped up by the time I got there, half a dozen Bokoblins beaten to a pulp, right T-man? All I had to do was wrestle the Moblin down.”  Teebo, red eyed and wet cheeked, shook his head. “Mister Link killed a black Moblin Momma, if he wasn’t... wasn’t there then-” “Then the men from the village would have saved him instead.” Link said firmly. “Dantz would have cracked their skulls with a shovel, I’ve no doubt.”  Zelda came over from the doorway, helping Tamana to her feet. “Aster rushed here as fast as she could, it’s because of her that Link got there so fast.” Tamana nodded, reaching out to give Aster a tight hug. “You’re a good friend, but please, stay. out. of. those. WOODS.”  “Yes ma’am.” Aster squeaked.  “Monsters don’t kidnap children usually.” Link said with a frown. “Tell the other kids to stay near the village from now on you two.” Aster and Teebo nodded dutifully, both trying furtively to clean themselves up.  “For now go and get some rest.” Zelda said, patting Aster on the head and giving Teebo’s shoulder a squeeze, before looking up at Tamana. “And maybe a warm bath?”  “Absolutely.” The mother nodded. “I’ll tell Medda what happened, and make sure Aster gets a good meal, maybe a new toy or a dress, I can make her a dress if I have some spare time in-” “Tamana.” Link said patiently, used to the woman’s rambling. “The kids are probably getting cold.” “Right!” Tamana nodded, taking Aster and Teebo’s hands in her own. “C’mon kids, let’s get you clean and warm.”  Link waited until they had disappeared behind the Bolson Construction display homes before he took a hissing breath and clutched at his arm, going over to the cooking pot by his house and taking several things from his belt pouches, Zelda glimpsed a fairy and some grisly looking remains in the mix before he tossed them in the pot and quickly combined the ingredients into a health elixir that he downed before it even cooled. The slash across his arm closed up, and the blood that had seeped out evaporated, swirling into a stream of mist that Link inhaled and sighed as he was righted.  “A hard fight?” Zelda asked with concern. “Ganon knocked more out of me than I realized.” Link explained sheepishly. “I let the Moblin get the better of me. I don’t like this kidnapping business, I’ll have to watch out when they come back under the blood moon.” Zelda tilted her head, confusion weighing down her brows. “Come back? Link, they won’t come back. Ganon is gone now, his power won’t resurrect the monsters anymore.” Link stopped, halted, paused, and froze all at once. His brain broke for a moment as that reality settled into his logical reasoning, before fixing itself and processing what the princess had said.  A giggle escaped him, quickly it evolved into a chuckle, and then a full blown rolling laugh. He held his stomach and doubled over as mirth overtook him.  “I can gain ground!” He exclaimed, gripping Zelda’s shoulders in joy. “I can push them back!” His grin faded as he looked to his hands, a blush spreading over his face. After the heat of battle and the joy of defeating Calamity Ganon, hugging his Princess had felt natural, expected, but now that he had a cool head? The difference in their station was never so clear. He quickly stepped back. “I- I’m sorry Princess, I didn’t mean to-” “Link.” Zelda interrupted him tiredly, stepping forwards to close the distance he had placed between them. “You don’t need to apologize for just... Just touching me.” She reached out and took his hand in hers, holding it as she spoke. “We haven’t been near one another for a century, but I feel like there is no one else I could be closer to. It’s because of you that I’m alive, that ANYONE is alive. You died because of me, and slept for a hundred years recovering, when you woke up I felt like hope had returned to the world... And fear. You had every right to deny me, to abandon me, but without your memories, without any idea who I was, you decided to listen and rescue me.”  Link’s hand gripped hers tighter. “There was no choice.”  “Of course there was.” Zelda said with a bitter huff. “You could have decided I was finally too much of a-” Link’s other hand bumped into her chin, tilting it up so that Link could look into her eyes. “If I woke up in that cave a million times over, each and every time I would walk out knowing my purpose. Save the princess.” “Why?” Zelda asked. “Because it’s your destiny?” Link shook his head, letting his hands fall to his sides. “Because if I didn’t save you, I wouldn’t be me. Just like how if you didn’t seal Ganon, you wouldn’t be you.” The two headed inside, Link pleasantly noting that Zelda had brought the dishes inside after he rushed off to save Teebo, they turned and ascended the stairs.  The tired knight sat down on his stool, lent back against the wall with one arm upon the banister and the other on his bedside drawers, propping up his head. Zelda sat down on his bed, scooting until she was lent against the wall beside the window. “Do you get injured often?” Zelda asked quietly, a tone in her voice that made Link wary.  “Not anymore, at the beginning I did, but as I improved and grew stronger there were less opponents that could worry me.” Link shifted his shoulders. “Riju thinks I could stand to carry more durable shields with me.”  “Smart advice.” Zelda said with a raised eyebrow. “Who’s Riju?”  “The Gerudo Chieftain.” Link revealed, a grin curling his lips. “She’s very young, but quick as a whip and loved by the Gerudo. You could say she has their... Seal of approval.”  Zelda smiled as Link snickered at his own joke, not quite sure why it was funny, but enjoying her stoic knight showing off his happiness. “I’d like to meet her sometime, if she’s anything like Urbosa I’m sure...”  Link looked over with a frown, finding the princess on the verge of tears as she looked to his side. At the picture of the Champions. Link was at Zelda’s side in an instant, his concerns about touching her forgotten as he embraced the young woman and tried to comfort her.  “It’s like I saw her yesterday Link.” Zelda told him, keeping a vice-like hold on his torso. “Like I saw all of them.” “They’re at rest now.” Link told her, not sure if it was the right thing to say. “I saw them briefly, after defeating the pieces of Ganon within the Divine Beasts. They guided the attack that decimated Ganon from above.” “Could... Could they still be in the Divine Beasts?” Zelda asked tentatively. “Even a piece of them?” “Maybe.” Link acknowledged. “With spirits as powerful as theirs, I wouldn’t bet against it.” Zelda grew quiet for a time, her hold on Link unbroken.  “Can I go to see them? If they truly are still there?”  “I’ll take you myself when I’ve recovered.” Link assured her. “I was planning on seeing Dorephan as soon as possible, we can visit Vah Ruta while there.”  Zelda nodded, a yawn overtaking her for a moment. “And then... I would like to travel to the Gerudo Desert, to see Vah Naboris, and Chieftain Riju.”  “That shouldn’t be a problem.” Link said, his own eyelids heavy, his muscles aching.  The champion shuffled backwards, until both he and Zelda were laying down comfortably on his bed. “We can go there first even, if you want.” “Mhhmmm.” Zelda murmured, shifting against his side. Link chuckled softly, tucking a pillow under his head and settling in. Out of his window a full moon was rising, a pale white moon.

I will post them as I can though! Promise! I also plan to include links to the cutscene for you to watch at the bottom, if so desired - at least for the ones I can find. Any other warnings that become necessary, I will add for content as I go. For now, enjoy! [All Chapters here for your reading enjoyment.]
Y’all… Dammit Salty Bird. I got irritated all over again rewatching the scenes to get the dialog for Revali’s scenes. He’s SUCH a well written character... and I hate him. Well, hate is strong. But I really, really dislike him a lot. Even when he “gets better” he’s still a !@#%%^&^er. But, I like this chapter, and I hope you will too. Chapter 7 - Revali’s Flap
The Rito Village, and land surrounding, was genuinely breathtaking. The wood and canvas huts that served as both homes and shops were built around the landscape’s large peaks of sandstone. This design allowed wind to blow through the village unhindered without disrupting structural integrity. At this altitude and in the region, Link was chilled. Pretty much constantly. But, he’d bought some new armor from the nice Rito vendor in trade for some amber and a few sapphires he’d found. Now he was nice and toasty warm.
Sitting by the cooking pot inside a part of the village’s inn, Link stared into the fire as his dinner marinated. He’d been here before. He could feel it, and this was not a place soon forgotten. It might have been if it was the first place he’d come, but even then the striking beauty of the land, difference in architecture, and the colorful individuality of its inhabitants were like nothing else in all of Hyrule.
Maybe that was the opinion of an ignorant Hylian child that he had once been. He had grown up in and around the Zora Domain in the Lanayru Province. This knowledge was coming back to him slowly, and explained why he’d gone there first. It also meant the Zora had never seemed odd to him, though consequently neither had they seemed particularly awe inspiring in a long, long while. The Rito however, were a different story.
Ladelling out his dinner from the pot, simmered fruit for the moment as he was cold, tired and in need of foraging for some supplies, Link leaned back against the solid wood support beam of the hut. Simmered fruit made him think of his mother - now that he remembered her face. She made the best, and had taught him long ago. It always made him feel better.
He needed that right now. There was a long way to go for him to find all the locations in Zelda’s album, and take back control of two more Divine Beasts from Ganon. He was tired, and had only arrived less than an hour before, deciding that he was going to eat something before speaking with the Tribe Chief. In the sky overhead, Vah Medoh let out a shrill and bone chilling cry. The enormous ancient technology flew overhead in the shape of a bird, stone and metal kept aloft by gigantic propellers and magic. Glancing up, and giving a good, long look at the Calamitous energies pulsing through the construct, Link ate his simmered fruit quickly.
No rest for the weary, as it were.
After eating, he asked directions to speak with the Rito Chief and had the oddest interaction. It was as though the Chief could tell he was the fallen hero, but couldn’t accept it. Link had stopped bothering to try and explain it to people months ago at this point. He was told of Teba, and that perhaps the warrior could help him, if nothing else the Chief was worried.
But it was the following conversation with Teba’s wife that ignited something in Link. She showed him Revali’s Landing, a flight platform just outside her home named for the Champion of the Rito from a century ago. Looking at it, Link was taken by a memory.
***
Standing out on the center of the flight platform, Link craned his neck and shielded his eyes to look up at the impressive Vah Medoh high above him. It truly was an impressive piece of ancient technology, and he’d listened intently to Zelda lament at great length that she would never be able to set foot on such a marvel. The sky was the clearest blue surrounding the Divine Beast, and wind cool despite the sun’s warmth. But then, it was always cool in the Hebra region.
Just as Link had the thought he should probably go find the Rito Champion, as that was whom he had climbed the peaks to see on behalf of Zelda, the wind picked up. At first it was small, but it rapidly build to a steady cyclonic breeze that seemed to come from beneath the platform.
In the blink of an eye and the flash of dark grey feathers, the Rito Champion appeared from below. Shooting up into the air high above, Revali spread his charcoal and white feathered wings, gliding down to a light and graceful landing before Link.
“Impressive, I know,” the Rito archer said in his normal, smug tenor. “Very few can achieve mastery of the sky. Yet I have made an art of creating an updraft that allows me to soar. It’s considered to be quite the masterpiece of aerial techniques, even among the Rito.” Revali turned to pose dramatically, one wing lifted where he was backlit by the sun in the beautiful day.
Link managed to not roll his eyes at Revali’s grandiloquence, giving him a tight-lipped smile. Revali didn’t like him - Link knew this. The Rito felt within his superior self image that he should have been the Princess’s appointed knight as he was clearly the most capable and worthy of the Champions. Clearly.
Though the Rito had never said those words exactly, it was the undertone of every word, sneer, snort and action the Champion took while in Link’s presence to date. Somehow the Hylian knight had a feeling this interaction would be no different.
Link found Revali cutting him a sharp look, speaking again before the knight could give a syllable of proper greeting. “With the proper utilization of my superior skills, I see no reason why we couldn’t easily dispense with Ganon,” be boasted with a bow. Hopping down from the railing on which he’d perched, Revali tucked his wings behind his back as if about to give a dissertation (which Link had no doubt he was going to do just that). Strolling forward, Revali’s expression was one of barely contained detestation. “Now then, my ability to explored the firmament is certainly of note… But let’s not- and pardon me for being so blunt-” he said as his tone changed from fairly condescending to outright patronizing, “Let’s not forget the fact that I am the most skilled archer of all the Rito.”
“Oh here we go,” Link muttered to himself into the wind.
“Yet despite these truths, it seems I have been tapped to merely assist  you. All because you happen to have that little darkness sealing sword on your back. I mean, it’s just… asinine.” The only thing that prevented Link from drawing his sword then and there and teaching this megalomaniac of a Rito a lesson, was self control. As Revali’s red-feather rimmed, green eyes cut snidely to him, Link crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. The absurdity of this entire monologue was as laughable as it was insulting. Clearly, Revali liked hear the sound of his own voice.
“Unless,” the Rito Champion added after a moment, “You think you can prove me wrong?” He took one large step closer to Link. The bird man who was a good head taller than the Hylian leaned in, beak to nose and invading Link’s personal space aggressively. “Maybe, we should just settle this one on one.”
Link opened his mouth to say that he had no problem with Revali… not until this conversation at least, but the archer turned away and continued his drama. “But where?” he asked the wind, one wing crossed his chest as the other pretended to stroke his beak in thought. “Oh, I know! How’bout up there?!”
With a grand sweep of one wing, Revali motioned to the sky, where Vah Medoh was soaring past, making its rounds. “Oh! You must  pardon me,” Revali chuckled, his tone even more supercilious than before, “I forgot you have no way of making it up to that Divine Beast on your own.” The last words were spoken with actual open aggression as the Champion spread his wings sharply, and took to the skies, leaving Link behind on the platform.
As Revali grew smaller towards Vah Medoh, and the vision began to fade, the Rito’s parting jab echoed the skies. “Good luck sealing the Darkness!”
***
As he came back to himself, Link was being stared at oddly by Teba’s concerned wife. Apparently she’d asked if he was alright, while he’d been lost to the past. “Oh, I’m sorry, yes - thank you ma’am.”
Giving him an uncertain look, she touched a delicate wing to her beak. “If you’re sure… you seemed… angry? Irritated at least. Are you well?”
Cracking his neck at the legitimate frustration Revali’s personality had left him with, he nodded. “It was… just not a pleasant memory, ma’am. Sorry to space out like that- but I promise, I will find your husband, and bring him back alive.
“Oh thank you!” she said sincerely. “Please… be safe.”
---
The knight held his shoulder and looked around the topside of Vah Medoh. The Windblight Ganon creature that had held control of Vah Medoh for so long was gone, fallen to the Master Sword. Well the Master Sword, and a not insignificant amount of bomb arrows.
Staring at the Main Control panel ten yards from where he stood, injured and exhausted, Link smirked to himself. He should just sit down, right here, and bake some apples to eat so he could regain a bit of his strength. It had been a hard fight! It had taken a lot out of him! And Revali could sit around and complain all he wanted, since there wasn’t anything the spirit of the Rito Champion could do about it.
He deserved as much for the prickly and haughty manner in which he’d been speaking while Link tried to subvert Ganon’s corruption. Though the change in tone as the hylian’s repeated successes went on had not gone unnoticed by the knight.
No, No Link wouldn’t keep him waiting… that would have been cruel. With a sigh, Link closed the distance between himself and the Main Controls, setting the Shiekah slate on the tablet as he had so many times elsewhere. The bulb, large as a room and intricate with ancient energy, changed from orange to blue, and pulsed once… twice… three times as Vah Medoh was not returned to control of the Champions.
“Well I’ll be plucked,” Revali’s echoic, ethereal voice said from behind him, “You defeated him, eh?” Link cut his eyes over his shoulder and turned around, braced for a potentially long and self absorbed speech. There Revali stood, incorporeal as both Daruk and Mipha had been, green spirit fire dancing around him where he had just landed. Spreading his wings wide, Revali seemed reserved… for Revali. “Who would have thought?”
Looking at each other a long moment, Link felt… differently than he had before. Mipha and Daruk had been his friends, people he cared a great deal for. Revali and he had not been friend, and even actively disliked one another a century ago. And yet, there was still a sadness in Link’s heart, seeing the Rito Champion’s spirit.
Noting that the archer dropped his gaze and looked away before he spoke, the Rito’s next words were surprising to the hylian. “Well done.”
But Revali continued, and the moment was over. “I suppose I should thank you now that my spirit is free. This returns Medoh to its rightful owner.” With a grand gesture to the sky of one wing, Revali straightened, clearly meaning himself. “Hmph,” he added with a callous expression. “Don’t preen yourself just for doing our job.”
Link pressed his lips together and raised one eyebrow. “Oh yes. We could never have that from any Champion,” he mumbled sardonically. If Revali heard, he didn’t show it.
“I do suppose you’ve proven your value as a warrior. A warrior worthy of my unique ability. The sacred skill that I have dubbed Revali’s Gale!” Despite the posing and flapping of wings, Link forgave the Champion’s drama in the face of the nicest thing  Revali had ever said about or to him.
With yet another set of dramatic movements, Revali’s spirit summoned and sent an orb of green spirit energy hurtling at Link, and as it entered him body, a familiar, strong whirlwind kicked up, lifting Link from his feet and tossing him into the air quite unexpectedly. With a flip and twist, Link landed without injury on one knee, and looked back up to the Rito… in gratitude.
“It’s now time to move on and start making preparations for Medoh’s strike on Ganon. But,” Rivalli gave a small smirk, “Only if you think you’ll still need my help while fighting inside Hyrule Castle.” It wasn’t an apology, but even a small admission that he’d been wrong so long ago was enough to inspire forgiveness entirely in Link’s heart. Revali quickly ruined the moment again by added, “Feel free to thank me now.”
Rolling his eyes, Link noticed the now familiar gold light that meant his time on the Divine Beast was over, and was shocked to hear Revali say, “Or.. .nevermind. Just go. Your job is far from finished you know.” The Rito Champion was glancing at him sidelong. Finally turning away and lifting his beak to the sun, Link was fading away already when he heard the final words of his old self appointed rival.
