Kai popped an earbud back into his ear. “You running back to the school?”

“Yeah,” Tyson said, pushing to his feet and brushing himself down. “I have an English assignment to finish and some other homework to get done. Who gives homework on the first day back from spring break?”

“Teachers. It’s their job.”

“Hitoshi’s a coach and he didn’t immediately give us practice.” He slid his gaze to Kai as they started an easy jog down the path. “I suppose you guys are gonna hog the ice for the rest of the season. You’ve got a bit of work to do. Particularly with Kane.”

“He’s getting there.”

“He’s no Arista.”

“He doesn’t need to be. He needs to plug up his holes. We’ll do the rest.”

“Yeah, Arista was kind of insane. If she were a guy, scouts would have knocked at her door years ago.”

Kai didn’t nod but there was a sense of agreement as they continued along the path and Tyson let his mind shift from the natural rhythm of running and back to Hilary’s expression.

There was something more there. Something he'd need to dig into but that was a future problem to think about. He'd probably need to ask some of the girls for advice.

But not this evening.

Shadows appeared and disappeared over them as the sun clipped through the gaps in the branches, a snatch of warmth battling against the growing chill of the evening. In the distance, he could see the crescent fingertip of the moon pushing through the fading blue sky and clouds continued to advance over Preston town.

It was like, with the return to school, the good weather had tapped out to let the students concentrate on their work like a true bro. His lips quivered at the thought.

Since Dragoon can control air/wind, do you think some of that power transferred over to Takao? Only a miniscule amount tho. Like, his paper planes fly the farthest. Or if grandpa leaves the door to his room open, a gentle wind from the window always closes it. Or maybe when he blows bubbles, they are stay for a long time. Or his hair is always windswept the perfect amount. Or that he can whistle any song perfectly even when he has food stuffed in his mouth

Chapter 63: Seiryuu-ou XXIII

I sure got to talk everyone’s ears off about the West over the next couple of days, not because I’d have wanted to but because absolutely everyone wanted to hear about it, apparently. Gramps had barred any journalists from pestering me right after I was back home, but from Monday onwards it was a wild left of interviews all over the place; everyone wanted to have a piece of my prevailing thoughts on the West. They also asked about the other kings, especially Rei. I’d noticed a decline in reporters’ interest in Kai, they’d all been trying so hard to get something out of him during his visit here yet hadn’t had much luck, now they’d shifted their attentions to the other enigmatic king.

What surprised me was that Professor, too, was interested in questioning me – or rather, when I went to see him at his parents’ noodle shop on Tuesday afternoon, he seemed concerned about me. (Man, I’d missed those noodles.)

“Well... You have been spending quite a lot of time with the other royals, lately.” Professor seemed a bit shy to admit it, but he’d learnt long ago to speak his mind to me nevertheless. “I know you are very down-to-earth and all, but mingling with people inevitably makes you share their values and views of the world, at least to an extent.”

“And what’s so bad about me sharing their values?” I asked, slurping my ramen away.

“You are one of them so of course you wouldn’t notice, but the world of the kings and that of us commoners are leagues apart, Takao. It’s hard to tell the influence that others have on you, yourself. I guess I’m just a bit afraid that you’ll disappear into their world and stop caring about us down here.”
