Protogenoi 9: Zeus Offspring Olympians
In addition to the previous deities, Zeus’ offspring become the remaining Olympians. Here we will explore their fascinating birth tales. In the following pages we will look at each of the Olympians in detail.
Zeus and Metis, the titan of wisdom. Fearing a prophecy of his son overthrowing him (just like he overthrew his father, Cronus) he swallows his 1st wife. But the child, Athena, goddess of wisdom and military strategy, erupts from Zeus head fully armed in war glory.
Zeus and Leto, goddess of child birth and motherhood. Fearing Zeus wife Hera, Leto escapes to the floating island of Delos to give birth to the twin gods Apollo and Artemis.
Zeus and Hera, give birth the Ares; god of war, as well as Hebe, goddess of Youth, cupbearer to the gods, and later wife to Heracles, and Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth.
Hera, jealous at Zeus’ sole conception of Athena from his head, conceives her own child, the lame-legged Hephaistos. Dissapointed with his disability, she casts him out off Olympus and he falls to the island of Lemnos, and becomes an ingenious craftsman under the parentage of sea nymphs Thetis and eurynome.
Zeus and Semele: Hera, in her jealousy persuades pregnant mortal Semele to convince Zeus to reveal his true form to her. But when he does, it incinerates her, and Zeus takes the unborn Dionysus into his thigh for the remainder of the pregnancy.
Zeus and Maia, who is one of the seven sister Pleaides who were associated with springtime and the constellations. Maia gave birth to Hermes in a cave on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia.

Stymphalian Bird
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stymphalian Bird
Pausanias theorized that the Stymphalian birds originated in Arabia, citing the presence of fierce desert birds known as the Stymphalides. He then admits that the population found at Stymphalos, in Arcadia, may have been the result of a few wayward birds making their way into Greece. Following this line of reasoning, Pausanias deduces that they earned the name of Stymphalides due to their fame in Greece, and the name then supplanted whatever name they originally had in Arabia!
Variations: Stymphalide, Bird of Ares
The appearance of the Stymphalian birds is no less muddled. Their most feared weapon is the sharpened, pointed tips of their wing feathers, which they fling like darts to stab their prey. Sometimes their feathers and beaks are made of bronze or iron, the better for piercing armor. Pausanias described them as about crane-sized, but resembling the ibis in shape, but with a stronger bill; elsewhere he says they are like hawks or eagles. In Greek art they have been represented as ibises, swans, and other such waterfowl; at least one obol from Stymphalos shows a bird with a short crest and a stout, powerful bill. Finally, no doubt influenced by tales of harpies and sirens, the temple of Stymphalian Diana also has stone statues of virgins with birds’ feet.
It remains true that the Stymphalian birds were first and foremost associated with Lake Stymphalia. They terrorized the region, ravaging crops, killing people, and poisoning the ground with their dung. Fox suggests that the legend originated as a glamorization of a plague or pestilence rising from the marshes, which would explain their noxious qualities. While their feathered darts could pierce armor, they were powerless against a certain type of tree bark, which held them fast like quicklime. There was only so much bark to go around, though, and the birds seemed numberless.
It was this scourge that Heracles was sent to destroy. As his sixth labor, it was one of a list of impossible tasks, and indeed the vast numbers of birds seemed beyond the hero’s strength. Heracles got around this by exploiting a simple fact – despite their numbers and ferocity, Stymphalian birds were as easily spooked as sparrows. Fashioning a pair of bronze castanets, he made such a din that the flock took off in a panic; from there he shot a great number down with his arrows, while the remainder of the birds flew off and were never seen in Arcadia again.
That was not the end of the Stymphalian birds, as from Greece they made their way to the Black Sea and populated the Island of Ares, where they became sacred guardians to the god of war. It was this flock that Jason and his Argonauts encountered on their way to Colchis. While the birds of Ares managed to wound the Argonaut Oileus with a feather projectile, they were scared off once more by the noise of rattling bronze armor, but not before pelting the Argonauts with a hailstorm of feathers.

Tickets now on sale for stream concert
Finally, tickets are now on sale for my stream concert that will be online on June 25, which I’ve been preparing for during... I guess this past half year?
This concert titled ‘History of my pieces’ brings together only the works I’ve written as tie-in projects, like character songs or ending themes for games and animated series, and I made those into a concert.
I feel like I finally got to answer all the requests I’ve received so far, going ‘I’d love to hear you sing this song!’.
KOKIA fans.
Anime fans.
Game fans.
Fans from an unseen future.
This is a chance for me to make all your wishes of ‘I’d like to hear that song!’ come true in one concert, so I’d be happy if you watched it and shared with many other people that ‘this concert exists’.
Of course, many of the songs I hadn’t sung live before. But on a personal note, there are still people who tell me they’ve gotten to know about KOKIA through some songs despite me having sung them before I even debuted, like the song ‘For little tail’ which I sang for the game Tail Concerto. And then, there are songs that I got to write for soundtracks of which I personally feel that both the song and the work really match me in every sense, like ‘Seimei no mai~Dance of the spirit’ from the TV anime The Ancient Magus’ Bride, as well as songs I found out that I would have loved to have had a much earlier chance for to perform them on stage. All in all, it’s a concert which I hope all my fans can enjoy, through whichever one of those works they’ve gotten to know me.
And so, without further ado, allow me to announce the song list of the performance!
The regular digital tickets can be purchased here.
The special digital tickets can be purchased here.
From which works did you all get to know KOKIA?

Entrevista | “Career Chronicles” com Noel Clarke
Tumblr media
1) Uma peça de teatro que ele fazia parte, aos 16 anos, e que apresentaram numa competição no Olivier Theatre em Londres. Seu grupo acabou vencendo e ele recebeu o prêmio das mãos de Anthony Minghella (”O Paciente Inglês” e “O Talentoso Ripley”);

Looking back at the Hercules television series starring Kevin Sorbo, and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess, it is difficult to pin down just when the shows were set. This is due to the Xenaverse (as the show's setting is commonly known) drawing off a number of historical and mythological sources.
The mythos of ancient times continues to live on in a variety of new forms. Series like American Gods mix the deities of dozens of cultures to tell new stories in a modern setting. Video games like the God of War franchise do the same thing, allowing players to interact with the monsters and gods of old. Yet despite the variety of new tales that have been told over the past 25 years, Hercules and Xena have retained their following.

Because of that legacy, many still wonder how the two series managed to build their shared universe and just when exactly it was meant to take place. It doesn't help matters that the show was intentionally anachronistic in its costuming, with Hercules sporting a sleeveless shirt and trousers rather than a Grecian tunic and the love goddess Aphrodite favoring modern lingerie whenever she appeared. Here's a breakdown of how the Xenaverse came into being and just when the events of the shows were meant to take place.
Tumblr media
The ancient legends of Hercules were first reworked with a more modern aesthetic in a series of five movies starring Sorbo and produced as part of Universal Studios' Action Pack; a syndicated programming block of science-fiction, fantasy, and action films and television series. The films presented Hercules as a bastard son of Zeus, blessed with incredible strength, who traveled around Greece slaying horrible monsters, fighting warlords, and helping people in need. His main adversary was Hera, queen of the Olympian gods, who was not thrilled to have a continual reminder of her husband's infidelity traipsing around earning praise for his noble deeds. He also regularly contested with his half-brother Ares, who, as the god of war, drew power from the conflicts that Hercules stopped.
The films were largely accurate to the classic myths, though some did use Hercules in place of another legendary Greek hero or combine various myths. Hercules in the Underworld, for instance, combined the legends of Orpheus and Hercules, by having Hercules travel to the afterlife and striking a bargain with Hades to recapture the three-headed dog Cerberus in exchange for being allowed to return to Earth with his wife, Deianeira. Another film, Hercules in the Maze of the Minitour, placed Hercules in the titular labyrinth, seeking to slay the Minotaur. The movies proved popular enough to inspire a regular syndicated series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, which opened with Hera killing Hercules' wife and children and Hercules resuming his life as a wandering hero.
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys ran for 6 seasons and 111 episodes, but it is best remembered today for the hero whose series spun out of it; Xena: Warrior Princess. Played by Lucy Lawless, Xena was introduced as a merciless warlord in "The Warrior Princess," the 9th episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Season 1. Xena had plotted to kill Hercules so that no one could oppose her campaign to conquer Arcadia and she was meant to die after her third appearance, finding redemption in death after her men defied her order not to kill non-combatants. However, Lawless proved so popular with the production team and with fans that the producers came up with a new plan for Xena.

Tumblr media
Premiering in the fall of 1995 alongside Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Season 2, Xena: Warrior Princess quickly eclipsed the show that inspired it. The new series centered on Xena as she traveled the world with aspiring bard Gabrielle, seeking redemption for her evil past. In expanding its setting and establishing Xena's history before encountering Hercules, Xena: Warrior Princess became equal parts historical epic and fantasy. This increased scope was part of the reason for Xena's longevity and part of why it remains a cult classic to this day.
Xena was established as having a long rivalry with Julius Caesar (played by a young Karl Urban) and Caesar was one of the series' main antagonists until his death in the Season 4 finale, "The Ides of March." This established a rough chronology for when both series took place, with Caesar having been assassinated in 44 BC. It should be noted, however, that neither show was ever concerned with historical accuracy, even after they began utilizing notable historical figures. For instance, one episode of Xena: Warrior Princess Season 6 pitted Xena and Gabrielle against a divinely empowered Caligula, who was depicted as the Emperor of Rome some 25 years after Julius Caesar's death. In our reality, Caligula did not become Emperor until 37 AD. The show also made references to the Lao Dynasty and Ming Dynasty of China, which would not come to exist until many centuries after the fall of Rome.
Tumblr media
Beyond utilizing real-world historical figures, Xena: Warrior Princess also began to utilize mythology from outside the era of Classical Greece. Hercules: The Legendary Journeys followed suit, with both series going on to tackle Norse mythology, bringing characters like Odin and Thor into play. In the episode "Norse by Norsewest," Hercules took the place of the god Höðr in being manipulated by Loki into accidentally killing Balder with a dart made of mistletoe and setting up the start of Ragnarok. Xena: Warrior Princess reworked Xena into the Ring Cycle, making Xena into both a contemporary of the valkyrie Brunhilda and the Dane hero Beowulf. Xena was also revealed to have had traveled to Asia and received training as a samurai, albeit in armor that was not historically accurate and protected very little.
Tumblr media
The timelines of Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess line up quite well, with both series having shared supporting casts and crossed-over frequently. Ironically, the show had more problems in keeping its characters consistent between shows than in keeping its timeline cohesive. To give one example, the god Odin was portrayed as a devout family man in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, being loyal to his wife, Frigga, loving towards his children, and deeply concerned about the fate of humanity. By contrast, the Odin of Xena: Warrior Princess, was a jealous warrior king, who indulged himself with his Valkyries and cared little for the problems of Man. While a case can be made for both portrayals based on the classic Norse myths, neither show attempted to reconcile the two takes. Given that, and the aforementioned problems with nailing down when the shows took place outside of Caesar's death, it is best to think of the stories of Hercules and Xena as ripping yarns told around the fire, enjoyed as individual stories independent of one another.

Everything I Read in 2016
Tumblr media
For the third year in a row, I logged every novel, short story collection, poetry compilation, graphic novel, and collected edition of monthly comics I read, excluding individual monthly comics (on which I continued to fall catastrophically behind) and anything I read (and reread, and reread again) for my day job. My only big change? A lot of these books were read on my iPad Mini. And a good number were for my gay book club (you can guess which ones).
If you don’t yet keep track of your reading, you should start in 2017. It’s your best bet for hitting a reading goal, and for folks like me who read a ton, it’s a nice way to recall books that otherwise departed your memory.
For the tl;dr crowd, here are my Top 13 for the year, in the order in which I read them:
On Writing, Stephen King
Binti, Nnedi Okorafor
The Girls, Emma Cline
I Am a Hero Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, Kengo Hanazawa
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Benjamin Alire Saenz
The Hero: Book Two, David Rubín
Night Sky With Exit Wounds, Ocean Vuong
Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders (I read an ARC)
A Choir of Ill Children, Tom Piccirilli
Habitat, Simon Roy
Prez Vol. 1, Mark Russell, Ben Caldwell, Domo Stanton
Bones of the Coast, edited by Shannon Campbell, Jeff Ellis, Kathleen Jacques
(New X-Men Omnibus was a re-read, or it would be up here.)
The rest is below the jump!
I don’t really feel like dumping on anything this year. I definitely got burnt out on comic anthologies, and I hated A Little Life, but the good outweighs the bad. Below is the full list, divided by month, followed by a few statistics and an evaluation of my 2016 reading goals as established last January.
[A note on comics: I feel guilty that I’ve left off colorists and inkers, as they contribute so much to a book, but I defaulted to cover credits while logging my reading and don’t have most of these books on-hand to fix it now.]
January
The Amazing World of Gumball: Fairy Tale Trouble, Megan Brennan, Katy Farina, Jeremy Lawson
Adventure Time: Masked Mayhem, Kate Leth, Bridget Underwood, Drew Green, Vaughn Pinpin, Meredith McClaren
Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland, Kim Newman, Maura McHugh, Tyler Crook
On Writing, Stephen King
Binti, Nnedi Okorafor
The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2016, edited by John Joseph Adams & Joe Hill

Total:
140 Books (up from 128 in 2015 and 87 in 2014)
Breakdown:
39 Novels or short story collections (down from 43 in 2015 and 44 in 2014)
98 Graphic novels/collected editions of comics (up from 84 in 2015 and a measly 42 in 2014)
3 Books of poetry (triple the 2015 and 2014 counts!)
About 35 Books written or edited by female authors (up from 20 in 2015 and 16 in 2014; note that I’m only counting writers and editors, not artists, and I’m counting books, not unique authors)
Roughly 19 books by (known-to-be) non-white authors (down from 30 last year but up from 9 in 2014...but both this year and last were inflated by multiple entries from manga creators)
...and at least 16 books written or edited by queer and trans authors.
So...any suggestions for 2017?

January 2021 Wrap-up
I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while and the new year seemed like a good time to start. These wrap-ups will function as a summary of all the things I read (books + fic), watched, listened to, played, etc. during the month. It’s partially self-tracking, partially recommendations. Italics = favorites.
THINGS I READ:
Books:
A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djèlí Clark
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado
Middlegame by Seanan McGuire
Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler (in progress, chilling how relevant this feels)
Comics:
Gwen Stacy (2020) 1-2
Spider-Woman (2020) 1-5
Favorite fics:
Ars cantus mensurabilis by Beltenebra (4k, This Is How You Lose the Time War): Ars cantus mensurabilis - the art of measured song or A playlist constructed over time. [Red and Blue, in love, leaving each other letters and music across space and time. Lovely and captures the book’s tone beautifully.]
know this feels like home by mimosaeyes (9k, Carmen Sandiego):  A series of domestic, slice-of-life, Team Red vignettes. Dadowsan and family fluff. [Excellent character voices, with just enough tenderness, all connected by concern for Carmen after she nearly dies.]
Publish and/or Perish by primeideal (5k):  In order to prevent “frivolous disputations unbefitting the history of our institution” (read: “some kid getting way in over their head, dying, and us getting sued,”) you couldn’t just walk in and demand to fight a snake. [A ridiculous, brilliant, and hilarious fic based off a short story. It captures academia, grad school, and imposter syndrome.]
THINGS I WATCHED
TV:
Carmen Sandiego season 4
Great British Bake-off (collection 5 on Netflix, in progress)
Hilda season 2
Julie and the Phantoms season 1
Revolutionary Girl Utena (in progress)
Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia season 1 (in progress)
Movies:
Knives Out
THINGS I LISTENED TO
(mostly I expect this to be podcasts but if there’s an album that I listen to a lot, I’ll add music as well - this month I mainly listened to video game OSTs and whatever Spotify threw my way)
Podcasts (all of which I’ve listened to for a long time now; in the future, I’ll just stick with putting new podcasts here):
The Adventure Zone
Be the Serpent
Minority Korner
My Brother My Brother and Me
The NPR Politics Podcast
Ologies with Alie Ward
Spirits
Triple Click
Wonderful
THINGS I PLAYED
Video games:
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Borderlands
Borderlands 3 (excluding the story - it’s just that the co-op gameplay is so fun)
Divinity Original Sin 2
My Time at Portia
Raft
Super Mario Odyssey
(NEW) THINGS I COOKED
only new recipes and only things I looked up recipes for, not stuff I threw into a pan and stir-fried
Ricotta cheese gnocchi
Turtle bread except I made it into a frog
