Best of YouTube 2023

Yes, I did spend the first week and change of January on this. I wish I could have had it done for New Years, but too many people came out with incredible work in December, so waiting turned out for the best.

What these creators do are a huge influence on my life, I would honestly have difficulty doing what I do without them. That isn't to say that my favorites of the year are *only* on this image--It was almost impossible to narrow down my favorites. Many creators I wanted to include couldn't fit on a single page, and too many of them made more than one video I wished I could draw too!

But, to all of you, thank you for what you do. You're an inspiration.

For those who don't know, further is an explanation.

At the bottom center is an artistic masterpiece by Defunctland: "Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History." Over the last several years, Defunctland has risen from delightfully-entertaining commentary on decommissioned theme park attractions to occasionally dropping profound statements on the creation of art itself. "Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History" is worth treating like the cinematic experience it is: No second screen, you sit your ass down in front of a TV, set down the phone, and then you *watch it.* Any Disney, theme park, or independent film fan needs to pay attention to this one.

Bottom left is Caelan Conrad with their piece "Drop the T - The Deadly Consequences of Gay Respectability Politics." While I do think they've done more visually or artistically-daring pieces before, "Drop the T" is one of the most important videos released on YouTube in today's current climate of hate. We as queer folk (and our allies) need to understand how integral every identity of the queer experience has been since the start of the Civil Rights movement (and before!). While we are not identical, we *are* inseparable, and we deserve having our real history easily accessible.

TERFs and other conservative mouthpieces need not reply. Your opinions are trash. 😘

I cannot stop watching and rewatching this video by @patricia-taxxon, "On the Ethics of Boinking Animal People." It's not just a defense of furry fandom and its eccentricities, it's a thoughtful and passionate analysis of what the artform achieves that purely human representation can't. Patricia goes outside of her usual essay format to directly speak to the viewer about the elements that define furry media (the most succinct definition I've ever heard) and just how *human* an act loving animal cartoons really is.

As an artist who can draw furry characters, but never really got into erotic furry art, this video is a treasure. Why did I choose to have her drawn as a Ghibli character, hanging out with one of the tanukis from "Pom Poko?" Guess you'll have to watch, bruh.

Philosophy Tube continuously puts out videos that I would put on this list--I'm not even sure that "A Man Plagiarised my Work: Women, Money, and the Nation" is the best work she released in 2023. However, this video got many conversations going between myself and my partner, and the twist on the tail end of the video shocked us both to such a degree that I had no choice.

At the very tail end of the year, Big Joel released "Fear of Death." On his Little Joel channel, he described it as the singularly best video he's ever done, and I'm inclined to agree. However, for this illustration, I ended up repeatedly going back to a mini-series he did earlier in the year: "Three Stories at the End of the World." All three videos are deeply moving and haunting, and I was brought to tears by "We Must Destroy What the Bomb Cannot." While it may be relatively-common knowledge that the original Gojira (Godzilla) film is horror grappling with the devastation America's rush to atomic dominance inflicted on Japan, Big Joel still manages to bring new words to the discussion. Please watch all three of the videos, but if, for some reason, you must have only one, let it be "We Must Destroy What the Bomb Cannot."

Y'all. Let me confess something. I hate football. I hate watching it, I associate seeing it from the stadiums with some of my worst childhood experiences, I despise collegiate and professional football (as institutions that destroy bodies and offer up children at the feet of its alter as a pillar of American culture)--

I. L o a t h e. Football.

But.

F.D. Signifier could get me to watch an entire hour-plus essay on why I should at least give a passing care. AND HE DID IT. I might think "F*ck the Police," the two-parter on Black conservatism, or his essay on Black men's connection to anime might be "better" videos, but this writer did the impossible and held my limited attention span towards football long enough to make a sincere case for NFL players--and reminds us that millionaires can *in fact* be workers. That alone is testament to his skill.

Sit down and watch "The REAL Reason NFL Running Backs Aren't Getting Paid." Any good anti-capitalist owes it to themselves.

CJ the X continuously puts out stunning, emotional videos, and can do it with the most seemingly-inconsequential starting points. A 30 second song? An incestuous commercial? Five minutes of Tangled? Sure, why not. Go destroy yourself emotionally by watching them. I'm serious. Do it.

Their video Stranger Things and the Meaning of Life manages to to remind us all why the way we react to media does, in fact, matter. Yes, even nostalgia-driven, mass-media schlock. Yes, how we interact with media matters, what it says about us matters, and we all deserve to seek out the whys.

Folding Ideas has spent the last few years articulating exactly why so much of our modern world feels broken, and because of that his voice continuously lives rent-free in my brain. While the tricks that scam artists and grifters use to try to swindle us are never new, the advancement of technology changes the aesthetics of their performances. Portions of Folding Ideas' explanations might seem dry when going into detail of how stocks work in This is Financial Advice, but every bit of it is necessary to peel back the layers of techno-babble and jargon and make sense of the results of "Meme Stocks."

Jessie Gender puts out nothing but bangers, her absolute unit of a video about Star Wars might be my new favorite thing ever, but none of her work hit so profoundly in 2023 than the two-parter "The Myth of 'Male Socialization'" and "The Trauma of Masculinity." There's so much about modern life that isolates and traumatizes us, and so much of it is just shrugged off as "normal." We owe it to ourselves to see the world in more vivid a color palette than we're initially given.

"This is Not a Video Essay" is one of the most intense and beautiful pieces of art I've ever put into my eyeballs. Why do we create? What drives us to connect?

I don't even know what else to say about the Leftist Cooks' work, it repeatedly transcends the medium and platform. Watch every single one of their videos, but especially this one.

The likelihood you are terminally online and yet haven't heard of Hbomberguy's yearly forrays into destroying the careers of awful people is pretty slim. Just because it has millions of views doesn't mean that Hbomberguy's "Plagiarism and You(Tube)" isn't worth the hype. Too long? Shut up, it has chapters and YouTube holds your place, anyway. You think a deep dive into a handful of creators is only meaningless drama? Well, you're wrong, you wrong-opinion-haver. Plagiarism is an *everyone* problem because of the actual harm it creates--the history it erases, the labor it devalues, the art it marginalizes--which you would know if you watched "Plagiarism and You(Tube)".

Watch. The damn. Video.

In fact, watch all of them!

I think I finally get the Mononoke: Noppera-bo arc. I think I got it. (I've watched this series like 6 times in English and 6 in Japanese,,,, could it be insanity? 😏)

No, I don't think the Mononoke is Kusuriuri in disguise, and no I don't think Kusuriuri loved Ocho. The Noppera-bo are faceless yokai who are known to steal faces and cause tricks. They also can be Tanuki or Kitsune in disguise (could that mean Kusuriuri can be a Noppera-bo? Maybe that's how he knew to dispel all those tricks). This Mononoke could just also happen to be another nameless Tanuki or Kitsune. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Regardless of all that, Ocho obviously killed every desire she had and thus those desires were her different faces, in which created the Noppera-bo that fed off the pain of her sacrifices. She wanted to be a good daughter for her mother so she killed her playful side, she wanted to be a good wife so she killed her disobedient side. She sacrificed herself. She sacrificed her many faces.

And we've all been there. We gave up so many pieces of ourselves and gave up energy to keep the status quo in some way, form, or shape (reason and truth!!!). And it's so easy to hide away from reality and picture the "what ifs" if we kept to our honest selves or jumped into our impulsive/intrusive thoughts. And Ocho had done the same thing.

She is literally feeding her own negative thoughts by picturing what would happen if she decided to kill them all. Or if she stayed in her prison some faceless man (the Noppera-bo) will come and save her and build her a palace and love her despite the flaws. Like literally, the scene where they get "married" and all the masks are soooo jealous?? Like c'mon... That's Tumblr girlie sleepytime scenarios 101.

The Noppera-bo fed into her delusions, for lack of a better word. For her trial was fake in my honest interpretation. The trial was a metaphor for her final face. If she killed her final self, the self she had now, the obedient, selfless, demure Ocho, she would lose her identity once and for all. Who would she be after? Her face would have been stolen, and the Noppera-bo would have succeeded in stealing her, keeping her trapped in the prison she thought a palace.

Not to mention, ALL of this is happening in her mind. She is technically still in reality, picking up the broken sake bottle. And in order for the Noppera-bo to lose, Kusuriuri must bring Ocho back to reality and force her to remember her self worth, to remember her main face. The Ocho Kusuriuri kills in the end is the one that keeps her trapped in her daydream, the one that wonders why the Noppera-bo loved her, the one that wonders what her life would be like rather than the one who goes and does it.

I also wanna say that the Noppera-bo, the faceless man that would do anything for Ocho, is Ocho. Ocho is the Mononoke. I mean obviously they state it in the episode, but people still think the faceless man and Ocho are two separate beings. I treat the Noppera-bo as her imagination. Like your brain will do some crazy things to protect itself from self destructing, and that basically is what the Noppera-bo was. I can say from personal experience I dived heavily into fanfiction and fantasy because I wanted to escape the horrible reality of being homeless, depressed, and suicidal.

It's so apparent in the voice lines too that Kusuriuri didn't think the Noppera-bo was helpful at all.

"Why did he save me?"

"Do you really think he saved you?"

Like just because the Noppera-bo was trying to make her happy (and just because I dove in fanfiction to vent out my frustrations) didn't mean she was saved (did not mean I had the maturity to face my demons).

I think in the end, Ocho has the guts to leave. The medicine vendor saves her from her destructive self and she goes to run away like she intended.

I hope to God this dissertation makes sense. My brain is everywhere while watching these episodes for the 7th time.

#L1: Akudama Drive

Summary:

After the fall-out of a war between the Kanto and Kansai regions of Japan, citizens of Kansai now live in a dystopia. Criminals are bigger and badder than before, resulting in a specialized Execution Division rising to combat these ‘Akudama.’

An ordinary person accidentally wedges herself into the midst of a gang of the worst of the worst, and now she’s on the run with Kansai’s top Akudama to fulfill a cryptic mission. Her goal was to get back to her normal life, but one thing leads to another and she gets trapped, bound by her sense of morals to stick with her terrible team.

The team in question consists of a Brawler with a need to find the toughest opponent to fight, a Doctor who toys with lives, a Hacker who has run out of games to play, a Courier who always gets the job done, a Cutthroat with a kill count of 999 bodies, and a Hoodlum who was set for a prison sentence of 5 years. Joining them is the Black Cat, their mysterious recruiter, who promises great wealth to the Akudama.

Propaganda:

Akudama Drive is an anime produced by a video game company, and it’s amazingly a single standalone piece, unlike their other projects. The three people who lead the creation of the Danganronpa series (character designer, story writer, and music composer) came together and produced something so different from their usual pattern and it pays off.

The character designs are so fun, the music vibes hard, and the story is better than anything seen in DR before since (no offense meant) the cast all get fleshed out as individuals beyond a single trope. Everyone is depicted as morally grey, and it’s such a fun experience to watch the madness break out and root for the bad guys or the bad guys.

Every scene is so pretty, and you can see the color theory SLAPPING THE SCREEN, it’s so pleasing to look at. The voice acting is also top tier! The character evolution can literally be heard in the voices 🛐 The anime is a fun show with cool stunts and epic battles, but it’s still got some interesting social commentary if you’re the type that loves dissecting that madness. There’s a little something for everyone!

Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore, Rape/Non-Con, Self-Harm, Constant Flashing Lights and Screaming

#L2: BNA: Brand New Animal

Summary:

Throughout history, humans have been at odds with Beastmen—a species capable of changing shape due to their genetic "Beast Factor." Because of this conflict, Beastmen have been forced into hiding. Anima City serves as a safe haven for these oppressed individuals to live free from human interference.

During a festival celebrating the town's 10th anniversary, Michiru Kagemori, a human who suddenly turned into a tanuki, finds that Anima City is a far cry from paradise. After witnessing an explosion in the square, she is confronted by Shirou Ogami, a seemingly indestructible wolf and sworn protector of all Beastmen. As they pursue the criminals behind the bombing, the two discover that Michiru is anything but an ordinary Beastman, and look to investigate her mysterious past and uncanny abilities. Could she turn out to be the missing link between Humans and Beastmen?

Propaganda:

This is one of the first few anime I watched when I was getting into it, so I'm rather fond of it. Though the show is only one season, overall it's pretty solid and ties everything together at the end. I also really like how they utilize color in the animation (it especially makes fight scenes more interesting to watch). The worldbuilding they have with the beastmen is pretty neat as well. This anime is good if you're looking for something quick to watch.

Trigger Warnings: There is some violence, and since the characters are animals, that may fall under animal cruelty. There are a few parts in the show where the colors get pretty intense, so that could be considered flashing lights. There is racism, as the beastmen are discriminated against by humans.

"Fumi gives me a tanuki magic laced animal crossing amiibo card for my birthday, resulting in a very fun if different party~"

I originally started this a couple of weeks ago when I realized I shared a birthday with Whitney. Being a character from the Animal Crossing Movie, she reminded me of a memory of a incredibly eventful winter I had a very long time ago, a time when winter break started early because of a massive snow storm blanketing my place for good long while. It was an incredible week of having a cool uncle having a surprise visit, getting the first 1cc on a game I still hold dear to me, and the one random time where I randomly decided to watch the animal crossing movie subbed since I found out it existed at the time. All of that happened under that really snowy day, and seeing stuff related to that always makes me smile a bit, just a very simple, nostalgic memory. 

Honestly, with the current happenings in my life, I felt I needed a small piece for myself at the time, but those feelings of stress sorta evened out over the days I worked on this, I spent some time with some friends and I ended up having some of the most relieving days I've had in a long while, and it kinda just felt weird finishing this piece up lol. But I already spent some time on it and I figured, to hell with it. 

It would be rude not to finish this, and it's all for fun in the end, snappy~

1. How long have you been creating KakaIru fanworks?

I have been creating KakaIru fanworks since December of 2021.

2. What are you working on right now?

I am currently working on a piece for pride month, I haven’t figured out all of the details yet.

3. What is your favorite trope to create for?

My favorite trope to create for would probably have to be Rivals to Lovers/misunderstanding. I always find myself doodling Iruka and Kakashi being a bit fractious towards each other. I made up an entire B-plot for my magical girl AU just for this trope. It’s kind of a slow burn, Kakashi and Iruka horribly misunderstanding each other and then can’t stand each other as a result. It slowly clears up and they fall in love with each other in the end.

4. Which of your creations is your favorite, and why?

My favorite creation is this one I made about Mermaid Iruka and human Kakashi.

This is older art for a February prompt in the KakaIru discord server, I was thinking about that scene in The Little Mermaid where Ariel saves Prince Eric from drowning. I remember being really proud of it when I finished it.

5. Do you have any WIPs you’re excited about?

There is this one fic that I have been working on for a while, it needs some reworking and an ending but I am really confident about it.

6. Do you have any original characters? If so, tell us about them!

Haha I have way too many, a handful of them I have made just to ship them with my favorite characters. My most recent one is Yoshi Amamiya, she is 27 and a Jounin sensei who specializes in transformation jutsu (more specifically animal transformation) with water nature Chakra. Her birthday is July 19th, she has short red hair (heavily inspired by young Chariot Du Nord from Little Witch Academia), yellow irises, she is tall, 5’9 or 175.26 cm, yet slender with a more rectangular body type. She has a prosthetic arm and leg on the left side due to an ambush involving excessive paper bombs.

Yoshi is a sensei to a team of 2 girls, Suzu and Mai, and 1 boy, Akio. She is very close to her team but she has the tendency to mother them instead of being a teacher to them. Her favorite meal is Tamago Kake Gohan (a bowl of rice with raw egg). Her favorite thing to do when she isn’t on missions or busy training with her team is going for walks in the forest and finding a nice soft area of grass to rest in. She also knits occasionally.

7. What was your hardest piece to create, and why?

The hardest piece I have created was my Secret Santa gift, everything had to be just right, or at least close to it. The lights, the snow, the height differences, I wanted this to look good for the person receiving my gift and it took a long time to finish because of that. They loved it though and that’s what matters.

8. Do you have any favorite scenes from something you’ve created?

Yes, there is this one scene in my fic “Squeeze You” where Kakashi is messing with Iruka and mocking the Hallmark movies she is currently watching. It’s so sweet and I love it.

9. Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration for my more moodier pieces comes from my personal experiences, songs that really speak to me on a more emotionally raw level, and anime with a deep meaning and emotional maturity. Houseki No Kuni and Violet Evergarden are a few examples.

The others I create are inspired by scenery, pieces of fiction, and upbeat anime. Ghibli films are a big inspiration, I hope to one day be able to portray whimsical or comforting scenes, wonderful scenery, and also tell an enjoyable story like the creators in this company does.

10. Which of your creations is the most meaningful to you, and why?

This was my first collaboration with someone for the KakaIru Reverse Bang, I pulled the mood in the piece from times where I felt lonely and inadequate even when I had someone I hold dear near me. Projection through my art is part of my process so I was in a solemn mood the entire time I was making this piece. The event was fun and my partner, Badger, was so nice and did wonderful on the fic that they wrote for it.

hi guys, this is audrey and I am back :D it’s also me taking over for this week!! hereeee are some cool mythological creatures you could add to your wip…part 1’s focus will be some scandinavian, irish and japanese mythological creatures 🐍🧚🧟

scandinavian

elves: can take the form of dimunitive faerie spirits or tall, ethereal humanoids. associated with early morning mist or twilight specifically in swedish folklore. it’s said they dance in the low-lying mist during dusk or dawn and you can hear birdsong. little mushrooms sprout where their feet have danced.

fossegrimmen (norwegian)/strömkarlen (swedish): a water creature taking the form of a young man who sits naked while playing music on a fiddle underneath waterfalls. can teach humans how to play his music if they steal a piece of meat for him.

huldra (norwegian)/skogsrå (swedish): a forest creature who takes the form of a beautiful woman with an animal tail (often a cow or a fox tail) and a back resembling a hollowed out tree. known for being kind to charcoal burners by watching their kilns while they slept. some tales say that she seduces men by hiding her tail in a knot under her skirt.

kraken: giant, squid-esque monster from nordic folktales that can drown entire ships by wrapping its tentacles around them

lindwyrm/lindworm (danish): a limbless serpent that emits poison. grows fatter over time from the humans it consumes. legends say it likes coiling up around churches to prevent people from going to sermons.

trolls: forest dwellers with grotesque appearances; short limbs, slime-covered skin and fat bellies. known to live in family units inside caves or mountains. intrinsically connected to nature and not particularly aggressive towards humans but can be cunning tricksters.

valkyries: beautiful, female warriors who descend on battlefields to bring fallen warriors to valhalla (heaven promised to vikings)

irish

changelings: faerie babies that are swapped with human babies by faerie parents

banshee: a female figure who wails or shrieks to warn of an incoming death. can take various forms such as an old woman, a woman in white or a shroud, though it’s her wail and red eyes from weeping that can be used to identify her.

dobhar-chú: a half dog-half otter creature that lives in bodies of water and eats human flesh.

dullahan: a faerie that takes the form of a headless rider on a black horse. some folktales say that he uses a human spine as a whip and can foretell deaths – when he calls out your name, your death is imminent.

faeries: one of the most well-known creatures in irish folklore. they are split into two categories: unseelie faeries are known to be more troublesome while seelie faeries are more helpful towards humans.

fear gorta: legend emerged during the great irish famine in the 1940s. symbolises the spirit of starvation and takes the form of an emaciated, old man begging for food. generous passers-by are rewarded with good fortune

leprechaun: a small, humanoid being who loves being mischievous and playing tricks

pooka: a shapeshifter with bright, golden eyes who can transform into any form. it’s able to speak, confuse and terrify.

redcap: a malevolent goblin who can be found in castle ruins. described as taking the form of a short, old man. known for soaking his cap in the blood of unwary travellers who try to seek refuge in his lair.

japanese

tanuki: shapeshifting racoon-dogs known to be tricksters who enjoy playing pranks on and stealing money from passing travellers for fun

tsukumogami: household objects turned into spirits after acquiring a kami (spirit) of their own when living for 100 years. generally considered harmless but can be vengeful to the humans that abandoned them.

kappa: has amphibian and reptilian features – slimy, scaly skin in various shades of green, webbed toes and fingers. all kappa have turtle shells on their backs, beak-like mouths and are said to carry bowls on their heads with liquid inside that is said to be their life force. not necessarily friendly and known to lure humans into their rivers to drown them.

jorogumo: evil spider demons who disguise themselves as women to hunt for human flesh

kitsune: intelligent, mythical foxes with the ability to shapeshift. can be symbols of both good and evil in Japanese folklore. the most powerful kitsune were the nine-tailed foxes who had infinite knowledge. kitsune would grow a new tail for every 100 years they were on earth.

onryō: restless ghosts with long, unkempt hair and blue-tinted skin. driven by the desire to get revenge on people who did them wrong in their human life. reflect perceived wrongs, jealousies and crimes of passion.

Have you ever played DnD or something similar to DnD? If so would you be willing to tell a few funny stories or interesting ones that happened during a session of it?

Sure! I've played a couple of toonkind oneshots (you make a cartoon character and plop them in a dnd setting. Very fun. Please look up toonkind dnd) I have lots of characters but here are the ones who have appeared in games

Copper (a tanuki based on chopper one piece)

We went to an ice cream world and Copper was having a hard time so Tanguay (guy he just met but somehow fatherly vibes) just decided to Carry copper and a tiny ping pong toon. (World in a Bottle)

Sam Sharps walked in to the Scarlett Owl Tavern to have a root beer but apparently they were having some sort of class that day? He sat in the back and watched chaos ensue (Life Lessons With Chloe)

I soon realized that The Scarlett Owl Tavern was more of a place for your toon self to hang out so I made myself a character Mia Muse and she has different outfits because she's an actress with her own set of characters she plays. I've played a couple of ttrpgs with trash queen as dm. Two different zeda ones that unfortunately didn't get to finish. One I played a rito who was reminiscent of ralsei called Rasieli

Fresh out of the gate, this poor bird off on his journey to become a man was attacked by a helmroc king (unplanned, random encounter)

And while he can talk to birds as a rito, that did nothing to make the encounter less terrifying . He shook me down for food, ate my rations, and was ready to eat me when trash queen had mercy on his poor level 1 heart and sent I think a flock of loftwings?? To distract it and my little bird got away... barley.

The other Zelda game got farther and I was really sad to let that one go. This time I played an octopus Zora named Melanie (inky)

I think my favorite memory was her time as a chaperone at twili prom. She noticed some drug use (drugs that would turn people into demons, but the teens didn't know that) the teen who sold the drugs (bratty rich and popular type girl) called Melanie a nark. Being a 100+ Zora and a chaperone anyway, she did not. Care. It's not like she went to this school so there was nothing this brat could do to ruin Melanie's life. Then the brat called her "granny" and this mainly peaceful mage was about to fist fight a teenager.

We also got to do an Ace attorney trial about the murder of the gerudo queen by the twili queen. That was fun.

Last but not least I am in a more "proper" campaign with TQ currently where we are making a country! I play a Half-elf paladin named Paeony Willow and she is mainly a Barbie Girl in the best ways.

Is Zombie Buckle the only one with side-effect? What about Revolver, Ninja, Beat or Monster?

Geats’ plot seemed more compact than Zero-One. Every minutes dedicated to gathering puzzle pieces and unraveling mysteries.

Zero-One (arc 2) could be like this too if Toei did not insist in keeping Horobi in the basement and forced him to become the final boss.

Fox, cat and tanuki often depicted as mischievous. They were also predator animals that came in huggable size. Ukiyo, Neon and Keiwa could effectively use their brains and every resources they had on hands.

Buffalo was as a big herbivore and Buffa was so reckless to the point of dying stupidly. He sure was the odd one out.

Happy Wheels:

-He would be laughing constantly. He would think anything with this kind of physics is hilarious

-He would accidentally stay up until like 4am playing it and he'd laugh so loud that the crew wouldn't be able to sleep and would have to come down and physically drag him away from the computer

Stardew Valley:

-I don't really think he would care about or understand the plot, but I think he would manage to build an insane farming empire where he has billions of gold

-He has 1,500 hours on one save file and when the crew asked him about it, he said he was just trying to beat the game

-Nobody had the heart to tell Luffy that there is no ending to Stardew Valley

-Franky, Luffy, and Usopp love to watch her play it, because she always talks about the lore in detail and the boys love the story telling

-Franky cries everytime he watches her play it bc of all the depressing storylines. He wanted to learn more about the game on his own, so he could chat with Robin about it, but the first piece of "research" he came across was Ben Drowned and he thought it was real, so he tries to suggest that Robin plays other games instead because he's scared it'll happen to her

-He gets so scared every time a ghost jumps out

-Always runs and hides from the ghosts instead of vacuuming them up

hi. march. slowly shortening this introduction to my posts. sorry if this is a little incoherent i woke up in the middle of the night and im getting sleepy again

i tried looking up fanfiction involving hannyabul and magellan the other day and there was almost none??? i really thought theyd be .. at least a little popular ... the dynamics... arent the dynamics similar to zosan or cavendish and bartolomeo.. dont people like that.. (i wouldnt know since ive never really been a fan of the enemies/rivals to lovers trope)

im pretty sure kidd wears a beast pirate disguise? and like .. good for him... (good for me).. hes got the titties out. i love men. i also rly enjoy the few frobin moments we get when theyre in disguise, theyre super cute!! it seems like u havent been spoiled on the Biggest Moments in wano so im very very glad to hear that. it also kind of has a mystery aspect so i think its probably way more enjoyable to go in blind. there IS a special kind of anticipation when u know what's coming but.. imo its more fun to guess how things will go rather than know and be excited about it

honestly i didnt care for the setting either. in the anime tho .. big mom's introduction is so good. theres a song that plays (its in the manga too but it's way better to hear it rather than... read lyrics) and when i started wci i was still watching the anime, so i got to listen to the song. it was stuck in my head for days. very catchy. i love how theatrical it is and it really made me excited for the arc .. and then i ended up barely enjoying it LOL. also i do actually love pudding but her age also makes me go... ewww. oda made an awful decision making her 16 . gives me kyros flashbacks.. although sanji doesnt seem to be genuinely interested in her. but still like why did oda do that... why... what is the point ... wci does pick back up a bit imo after they get sanji back (which i think is the part ur at? or a little bit after?) and i honestly think it wraps up quite nicely. and yeah.. most importantly.. katakuri is introduced in the second half. lovely guy. i heart him

an issue i have post timeskip is that i actually cannot tell the women apart half the time. they all look pretty similar in the manga, although theyre distinguishable by their clothes and hair. but there was a spread (not colored) that had the main one piece women all in different clothes and with different hair and i sat there for multiple minutes trying to figure out who was who. like i genuinely couldnt tell. i miss nami's short hair,, it had so much character.. and i also miss robins short hair.. again.. it had so much character.

even on a colored cover i had a moment where i was like "is that vivi or is it nami" because it was just a solid blue. i assumed vivi based off context clues and bc.. blue. but if i hadnt had that.. i dont think i wouldve been able to tell. i have no problem with character design changing but oda makes most of the women next to indistinguishable from one another now. its really upsetting. if they had different skin tones or even just. different eye shapes. or different figures. it wouldnt be that much of an issue. but nooo he cant do that. all women who are supposed to be attractive have to look the same.

oh they for sure have some good points. i also miss the silly shenanigans of pre timeskip. but overall im enjoying post timeskip more, and i do think theyre at least a LITTLE BIT blinded by nostalgia. its hard not to be tbh. i do really miss seeing all the crew together. i dont exactly mind them splitting up but .. i feel like a lot of them end up kind of sidelined. we dont get to see (just some examples) brook or chopper or nami fight much and i. i love them.. i love them just as much as the rest of the crew. i think nami has a really interesting fighting style. and brook is just fun. and people complain (validly) that chopper has been mascotified. which i wouldnt mind so much if he got more cool moments but he doesnt!! we dont even get to see him being a doctor that often :(.

like the writing is still fantastic but yeah. i agree. oda has basically run the jokes that were already pretty tired. into the ground. sanji being the one who suffers most from it. i dont mind robin having more moments where she imagines a really gruesome thing has happened to someone, for example. because she barely did that pre timeskip, and now she only does it occasionally so its not like "oh my god STOP". its still enjoyable. but. idk if theres even a prominent example of someone's character joke being awful other than sanji. like hes the only one who has a consistently awful joke. that in my opinion has never been funny. and its been made into a huge part of his character. i still love post timeskip to death bc. look at everything thats happening!! but i have a lot . lot . lot of gripes with it.

i saw someone say usopp would get conquerers haki and i big time disagree. he has the best observation haki in the crew and i feel like him getting conquerers haki would kinda cheapen that. and it cheapens his growth. why does he need to have conquerers haki to be a brave warrior of the sea? hes doing perfectly well without it. and also i dont think it fits his character. hes cowardly, has no self confidence, runs away from battles sometimes out of fear, and definitely has a huge sense of shame. from what i know, people with conquerers haki are usually super self assured, strong in a pretty traditional sense, and dont have much self doubt. usopp is like the opposite of that. i think hes very brave because he fights despite how scared he is, but the character archetype just doesn't work imo. like usopp without those characteristics is. to me. not usopp. tell me what u think!! also im like 90% sure none of this is spoilery but if it is i am so so sorry

do all places in one piece just have extra chairs or tables that are bigger? cuz there are some characters that arent of the giant race but are huge. and yet they fit on regular chairs. do u have a 8 foot tall guy walk into ur bar and u have to say "wait a second, we need to get out the big chairs" and then drag out a chair twice ur size? is that the case EVERYWHERE? or do some places not have big chairs so if ur extremely large u just have to sit in a chair thats too small for u.. or maybe u just sit on the floor. or stand.

that scene in sabaody of usopp asking rayleigh if the one piece is real, and luffy gets mad and tells usopp that he doesnt want to know, and if he finds out he will quit right now because he wont go on an adventure that isnt any fun. luffy is such a chill, silly captain, that im sure him snapping like that must be scary. usopp looked so shocked. i love their relationship. i think moments like that. really solidify how real the characters feel. like yeah, they have strong, defined morals. and they will argue and be childish and yell for the sake of their morals. i feel like a lot of media has characters with morals but it doesn't ever show them actually disagreeing with someone. let alone a friend. idk im not wording this great but i think this moment is so good. i love the moments of childishness in one piece. its very humanizing to have immaturity in ur characters

ur so right about the sidelining (its like anyone that isnt the east blue 5) and especially about chopper. aside from being mascotified i wish he wasnt baby-fied too (which stems from the mascot problem). like…he’s 17. chopper is a full ass teenager, not a child. I GET that he’s a reindeer and also very naive but imagine how cool he could have been post timeskip…horn point chopper is my fav bc i just love the design but IMAGINE IF HE LOOKED LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME!!

and he could have so much more development in terms of constantly seeing his crewmates near death and always having to fix it…or just him improving as a doctor! i dont think we get to see chopper doctor enough but we also dont get to see him struggle! THATS A GOOD SCENE TO POINT OUT. Challenger's Road

Challenge: MEET IN THE MIDDLE Word count: 1,448

A challenge sounded fun to Queenie. She was always up to try new things, just to see exactly how far she can push herself. The fact that she would be able to have Momo by her side only further cemented in her head how much she wanted to do this, and having it be something as simple sounding as just reuniting with the little tanuki sounded like a piece of cake.

Her and the little creature had grown a deep bond with one another in such a short amount of time. She was never the type to enjoy watching fights, anyways - and even though Momo would do everything he could to protect her, Queenie did whatever she could in return to ensure that he wouldn’t ever get hurt, whether it was for their protection or not. She tried her best to not allow him to fight - but even though he was her’s, and for the most part felt domesticated, he still had the instincts of a wild animal - there were moments where, even if she tried her hardest to not let it happen, he would still fight to protect her.

They had practically grown inseparable, with Momo always stuck by her side. He constantly circled around her feet until she picked him up, and if they separated for even a minute, they would only take just a couple of moments to recollect themselves. 

In Queenie’s mind, a two hour time limit sounded easy. They would find each other again, and they would be able to complete the challenge. With a gentle kiss to the side of Momo’s head, Queenie sets the tanuki down and watches as he hesitantly begins to walk forward, looking back at her with a curious look in his eyes - as if he knew what they were going to get themselves into. 

“It’s okay!” Queenie tells him, crouching down to her knees with a smile. 

“We’ll find each other quicker than the speed’a sound.” 

With that, Momo turns back around, taking Queenie’s words to heart as he runs off into the distance until the woman could no longer see him. 

She watches for a few seconds, waiting for the timer to sound off. She isn’t sure if people are watching her, but that was the least of her concerns. Her mind was only focused on the mission before her - follow after Momo, and find him within the time limit. Queenie takes in a deep breath as a loud buzzing sound fills the arena, and she watches as the walls of what she assumes to be the maze she needs to get through go up. 

Queenie had two hours to find Momo. All on her own, but she knew that the little guy would do whatever he could in order to find her. 

They were inseparable. 

How hard could this be? 

Wandering around in silence, turning down paths that seem to lead to nowhere with the sound of light ticking in the distance - a harsh reminder that Queenie was being timed tells her that it was much harder than she had anticipated it would be. Every wall looked the same, every sound and creaks that surrounded her and filled her ears all led her down the same path. At her current state, she was nearly powerless. She was still only able to make things out of ink that weren’t any bigger than a baseball, and that could only do so much. 

Each attempt to make something that could potentially tear those walls down was met with failure - with ink only splattering all over the place. She had hoped that maybe getting ink all over the walls would maybe lead to a message that could point her in the correct direction, but no matter how hard she worked - she was met with nothing. 

She’s not even sure how much time has passed since she started. Time both felt as if it was going by quickly, yet, not at all. Queenie’s not even entirely too sure where she should be going, only allowing her feet to lead her in the direction of what they felt was right. Yet, her surroundings all looked the same. 

Was she going down a straight, yet, jagged path?

Was she just going in circles? 

Was she headed straight towards a dead end? 

The silence was deafening. The only thing she could hear was the sound of her own breath - her heart pounding heavily in her chest. 

ONE HOUR LEFT! 

A voice echoes throughout the labyrinth, and Queenie stops in her tracks. She never was exactly the best at fending for herself, but as far as she could tell - there was never actually any form of threat. Just endless halls of nothingness, the lack of sound surrounding her. By this point, she had already expected to be reunited with Momo - but that was the farthest thing from the truth! She had no clue where he could be, which path she should head down, and what she should do. 

Throwing nonsensical items created of her ink at the walls did nothing. She felt as though her feet led her down paths of nothing - she felt as though she was going in circles. Time was ticking down much faster than she had anticipated, and part of her wishes she had never gone out of her way to complete this challenge in the first place. She was scared, and though they had only been separated for such a short time…she felt alone. 

She could have just been sitting in her room, giggling with Momo on his back, pawing at her hands as she waves his toys over his face. 

The thought of the tanuki causes a small smile to form on Queenie’s face. She places her hand over her cheek, her steps slowing down. How was Momo doing? 

Was he just waiting for her? 

Was he looking for her, too? 

Was he scared? 

Did he feel alone, too? 

Before she could allow herself to get lost in the thoughts of what he could have been doing, she hears the sounds of faint barking in the distance- Momo’s barks. Queenie stops in her tracks, looking around at her surroundings. In front of her were different diverging paths, each leading to something different - the sound of Momo’s barks coming from each and every one of them. 

“Momo?” She calls out, her voice echoing. 

For a moment, the barking stops. 

Then, it continues again - coming specifically from the path in the middle. It sounded desperate, far off in the distance, yet, so close all at the same time. Without even stopping to think of the consequences of what could happen if Queenie went down the wrong path, Queenie runs as fast as she can towards the path in the middle. 

Her heels clack behind her, echoing through the maze. The ticking clock grows louder in her ears, sounding as though it’s going faster with each and every step. 

“Momo!” 

Queenie calls out again louder, and Momo barks back. 

They’re close - she can feel it. 

“I’m comin’, baby!” 

She runs as fast as she can, running down what feels to be an aimless path. Yet, she doesn’t give up - no matter how tired she gets. She breathes through her mouth, only stopping when she spots something in the near distance, and it spots her, too. 

Queenie’s legs feel like jello from how fast, and how much she’s been running. But with shaky legs, she takes several steps forward, and the creature in the distance fully turns to face her. 

She could recognize the little guy from any distance. With a smile, Queenie drops down to her knees, holding out her arms towards him.

“Momo?” 

She hears Momo let out a loud bark of joy, as he runs as fast towards her with his tiny, stubby legs. A laugh leaves Queenie’s lips as Momo takes a leap just a few feet away from her, jumping directly into her arms, right as the sound of the timer indicates that two hours have passed and that their challenge was up. She can hear the faint sound of the announcement saying that they’ve passed, but in the moment - it’s the last thing she cares about. 

“I told’ya!” She exclaims, rubbing her cheek gently against Momo’s. 

“I told’ya, Momo! We’d find each other! I knew we had nothin’ to worry about!” 

For the time being, Queenie ignores the fact that for a second - she contemplated giving up. She ignores how scared she felt, knowing there was very little she could do to fend for herself. All that mattered to her in the moment was that Momo was okay. 

He didn’t seem hurt. 

That’s all that mattered.

When the twins assumed you were dating Suna, he went along with it and you had no idea why.

Despite being Atsumu’s best friend, you barely knew his aloof and nonchalant teammate. Suna only made the occasional comment on the twins’ antics when you were around.

So when you needed a way to escape from the twins’ interrogations –including one about your longtime crush because you were definitely over him– Suna offered to walk with you after school to provide a way out. This raised a few eyebrows including yours.

Things got even stranger when the twins assumed you were dating Suna. And for some reason, he went along with it.

"Tanuki! It's a tanuki!" A hushed voice came from the other side of the bush. The canopy of leaves hovering above Suna's head swayed in the breeze. Whose voice was that? It sounded familiar. Laying his phone on the grass, he shifted his weight and craned his head over the bushes.

He didn't expect to see his sister. Karin scampered towards the raccoon-dog and crouched down a few feet away from it. "You're right, Y/n! It is a tanuki!"

"Y/n?" Suna thought to himself. A maroon bow loosely wrapped around the collar of your shirt and the skirt sitting on your hips matched his own uniform. Suna squinted his eyes. He had seen you before.

"Quick! Take a picture!" you whispered to Karin.

"I'm trying!" she told you. "It's not swiping." Karin continued to thumb at her phone.

The tanuki ran off.

"No! Karin!" you said as you clutched her arm. "You missed it."

Karin sighed. "I thought we'd be able to get one this time."

"Maybe we can lure it in with your Tom Nook plushie," you suggested with a smirk. "They could be friends."

Suna crouched back down behind the bushes. Was he hearing things?

Karin was laughing.

He laid down onto the tall grass, its soft blades brushing against his face. After blinking a couple of times, his arms relaxed at his sides and a relieved sigh left his chest.

He had been worried about Karin.

Over the past few months, she didn't give their parents a reason for concern. She came home with a plastered smile, ate dinner and then went to her room. Muffled voices seeped through her door as she chatted with the friends she left at Nagoya.

Their calls became less frequent over time. Conversations reminded her of the gaping void in her life, of how she was missing out on birthday parties, first loves and other milestones.

Her bright yellow aura dimmed. She was in second year, so many of her classmates had their groups of friends. Karin often went on with her days alone.

"Did you want to come back here tomorrow?" you asked her. "It might be here again."

Suna's hand searched the grass for his phone. Maybe Karin could start a new scrapbook.

His phone caught a glimpse of you and Karin, but the preview image didn't quite focus. A twig snapped under your foot. You and Karin were walking towards him.

Suna scampered closer to the bush, holding his breath as the two of you walked by. You didn't see him. He relaxed his shoulders and fell back onto the grass.

He should've taken the picture faster.

Suna watched as Osamu slumped on the gym floor. Ginjima tried to cheer him up. The last practice match went poorly and the amount of times Osamu spiked the ball out of bounds frustrated him.

"You useless piece of trash."

Suna tilted his head towards Atsumu. There he went as expected, although this was the first time Suna had witnessed just how tactless he could be.

"Any piece of trash that can't score with those sets should let someone else play already," Atsumu added.

Why you considered Atsumu your best friend was a concept Suna didn't understand. He didn't expect you to be childhood friends with the twins.

"Why you…," Osamu growled before kicking Atsumu to the ground. "Abusive tyrannical pig!"

Suna whipped out his phone. He was faster this time.

"You may be on your game, but there are days that we aren't," Osamu snapped at Atsumu.

Click.

"If I'm off my game, that's just what it means you stupid ass!" Osamu continued as he shook Atsumu's collar.

Click.

"Does wittle Atsumu-kun never make a mistake?"

"What's wrong with calling a piece of trash a piece of trash?"

The twins continued to argue as Suna checked the photos he took. This should be enough for now.

Suna browsed through his recent photos to see if any of them came out well. He came across a clear picture of the twins grabbing each other's shirts. Their faces looked hilarious.

He hit the share button and stared at his list of contacts. He forgot. He didn't have your phone number.

Suna sighed as he placed his phone back into his pocket.

He should get your number some day.

A new school year had started, and this time, you were in Suna's class. You sat two desks away from him, but you remained indifferent to his existence.

Atsumu came by class 2-1 often, claiming he was bored back in his class. You didn't mind his visits on most days, but today, they asked about your crush. Suna had no clue you had one.

He tuned out most of your conversation as he organized his playlists. As he selected a few songs to move, he had a thought: what kind of music did you like?

“Oh shoot!” you said, abruptly standing up, chair legs grinding the floor. You stuffed your phone in your bag along with your notebooks and scattered pens.

“Where are you going?” Atsumu asked.

You pressed your lips together, pushing the items into your bag a little faster. You rushed for the door only to have Osamu blocking your path.

“You’re avoiding the question again,” Osamu commented.

Suna raised an eyebrow. Karin had mentioned she was going to the park today. "You didn't tell the twins?" He shrugged off that thought. Whatever the reason was didn't matter to him.

Suna took a glimpse at the clock. You were going to be late. Would Karin be disappointed?

“Osamu,” you said, “can you please just–”

“Y/n, let’s go,” Suna told you, rising from his seat.

You scrunched your eyebrows together, trying to make sense of his words.

“Well?" Suna asked you. "Didn’t you want to go?”

Suna closed his social media app only to reopen it again. It was quiet in the hallway outside of his room. You had hung out with Karin in her room after dinner. Did you go home already?

He wished he could spend more time with both you and Karin. But not right now. Not when his own wants and feelings often complicated his relationships.

He refreshed the app. Nothing new showed up. Maybe he should finally download the game others kept recommending to him to distract himself.

A notification appeared on his phone. Someone had liked a photo he posted a week ago. He hadn't shared anything recently, not because he didn't have anything to post, but because he couldn't. What if you didn't hit the like button?

He dropped his phone next to him and covered his face with his palms. When did his feelings get so complicated? He didn't mind helping you out back when you had unresolved issues with Atsumu. He owed you. You helped relieve his guilt about coming to Inarizaki and even got Karin interested in volleyball again.

Suna hadn't talked to Karin much since the move. She was hurt and he blamed himself. Perhaps they could spend time with each other again now that she actually seemed better now. He fiddled with his phone. Would she cheer for him again?

The clock's red lights displayed 10:34pm. You must have gone home by now.

Suna turned the knob and saw you through the small gap. He began to pull the door back, but the creak caused you to turn your head towards the noise, making eye contact with him.

Your eyes grew, staring at him, then you quickly lowered them towards the floor. Suna's stomach tumbled and churned. He was familiar with this feeling.

He wanted to ask to walk you home. The guilt of distancing himself away from you gnawed at his gut. He didn't want you to lose him as a friend, but unfortunately, fear overpowered his guilt, fear that you'd eventually leave him for someone else. For someone better.

You walked away, your steps on the stairs echoing in his ears.

Just a bit more time. He'd get over you soon. He didn't want things to be awkward around you anymore.

He could be by your side again.

He just needed more time.

Suna slid his crumpled gym bag out of his locker. The sweat that was on his forehead had now dried up. He was exhausted.

The twins were at the other side of the lockers, saying their goodbyes to their senpais as Suna opted to leave his gym clothes on, only changing out of his knee pads and volleyball shoes.

"Y/n's been going to the playground again," Osamu said.

"So?" Atsumu replied.

"You know…," Osamu said. "That one. The one she thinks we don't know about." A locker snapped shut. "Did you do something again?"

Suna stopped pulling off his shoe. Were you okay?

"Why do you always assume it's my fault?" Atsumu replied. A nylon tie zipped against a cotton shirt. He hummed to himself. "It's been a while since she's been there. Do you know what happened?"

"No clue."

Suna felt a pang in his stomach. It was because of him, wasn't it? He tightened his shoes, his fingers fumbling around the laces. They weren't tying.

"Should we send Aran again?" Atsumu asked. Another locker door closed. Suna's stomach dropped.

"Ha? Don't you mean Suna?" Osamu replied.

Suna bit his lip. Choosing him wasn't any better. His laces were done now. He just needed to leave before–

"Oy! Suna!" Atsumu marched over to Suna's side of the lockers. "Go cheer up Y/n like a good boyfriend!" he instructed, pointing his index finger at him.

Suna gripped his gym bag. He took a deep breath and adjusted his shoulder strap. "I can't," he muttered, his eyes shifting away from Atsumu. Maybe he should go through the other door.

"Ha?" Osamu raised his brow, joining in on the conversation. "Why not?"

Suna stepped towards the exit, walking past the twins. Osamu placed a hand on his shoulder.

Suna whacked it away. Osamu was taken aback from his reaction, stuttering over his words.

"I said I can't," Suna repeated.

Atsumu's eyes narrowed as he clenched his teeth. "Oy," he said in a low voice. "What did you do to her?"

Ha. So Atsumu could catch on if he wanted to. "It's none of your business," Suna muttered.

Atsumu snatched his collar. Suna's bag dropped to the ground as the shirt tugged against the back of his neck. Suna glared down at Atsumu. Tch. Why did he have to get involved?

"What did you do?" Atsumu raised his voice.

"Nothing," Suna replied. "I didn't do anything." It was true. He didn't do anything. He was avoiding you.

"Then go and figure out how to make Y/n feel better."

"You can't do it yourself?" Suna snapped.

"Her boyfriend should be going!"

"I'm not her boyfriend."

"What?" Atsumu asked with a sharpness in his tone.

Tch. Suna didn't mean to say that.

"Ha!" Atsumu exclaimed. He continued to laugh, not noticing the appalled expression he got from Osamu. "What the heck is going on?" He turned to Suna and stared him down, still holding on to his collar. "Oy. Just what kind of trash breaks up with Y/n all of a sudden?"

You didn't tell Atsumu yet. Why did his tongue have to slip? It wasn't his place to explain to him that it was all fake.

Suna grabbed Atsumu's arm and whipped his hand off of his gym shirt before bending down to pick up his bag.

"Y/n should've stuck to liking Aran," Atsumu scoffed at him.

Suna clenched his fist. "Don't do anything stupid." He exhaled through his nose and relaxed his hand to pick up his bag again.

He approached the exit with the gym bag by his side. His hand turned the knob.

"Y/n doesn't need trash like you."

Smack.

Atsumu stumbled a few steps back, hand covering his cheek. His eyes widened before he gritted his teeth at Suna.

"Mind your own business," Suna slowly enunciated, stressing each word. He didn't need Atsumu to tell him you didn't need him. He already knew that.

Suna turned away from him, ignoring his yells and snide remarks. Osamu scuffled with him, frantically trying to hold him down.

"Atsumu! Stop!" Osamu called after him.

Suna glanced back. A fist came at him.

Thud.

Top 5 anime you think are criminally underrated!

This is a really good question, and it was VERY difficult to keep myself to only 5. These are all anime that I think deserve a much wider viewership! (Plus five more!)

I ended up spending waaayyyy longer on this than I thought, I can’t imagine how much I would have written if you’d said top 10. I can literally talk about anime forever. Here’s some I wholeheartedly recommend.

1. Shojo Kageki Revue Starlight (Action, drama, romance)

This is my newest love, as of yesterday, when I binged the whole thing. The best way I can describe it is by mashing up other anime. Take Revolutionary Girl Utena, iron out about three layers of metaphor, and trim off all of the dark themes related to the Rose Bride. Then throw it in a blender with Madoka Magica and Love Live!, add half a cup of Gay Concentrate, and serve up the result: A character-driven drama about girls at a performing arts school, who settle their differences in magical-girl-fantasy duels styled as impossibly gorgeous theatrical stage-combat musical numbers. Beyond the flash and high concept, there’s a well-written cast, solid emotional core, and really engaging plot.

2. The Eccentric Family (Drama, comedy)

This show is my favorite genre of fantasy; mythical creatures living in the modern world, right under humans’ noses. In this series, humans only know tanuki as the cute little raccoon-dogs, but tanuki are really sentient shapeshifters whose goals are to outsmart the humans who live in the cities, pester the tengu who rule the heavens, live a life of freedom and trickery, and not end up on the inside of a hunter’s trap. The story follows a family of a mother and four sons whose widely-respected father was killed to end up in a human’s hot pot, as they try to enjoy their lives, live up to his imposing reputation, and unravel the increasingly suspicious circumstances of his death.

I have called this one “deceptively light-hearted” when describing it. My friend got halfway through the first season and came back to me with the verdict, “consider me fucking deceived.” This show has weight and does not pull its emotional punches, but neither does it ever stumble into becoming grimdark. Its worldbuilding is solid and the characters are all fantastically developed. Plus I wrote a whole post about one of the main antagonists(?) who I hadn’t even mentioned here.

3. Dennou Coil (Mystery, sci-fi)

Dennou Coil is a masterclass in worldbuilding, in my opinion. It’s a near-future sci-fi world, basically if Google Glass had taken off and become as common as cell phones are today. Many people don’t see the real world, they see the virtual textures of the world as they’re rendered through the glasses. Kids in one city have learned to mess around with codes, collecting tradeable fragments that break off the edges where the system glitches, chasing viruses that hide in pockets of obselete code in abandoned areas of the city where the software doesn’t get updated often. They spend their time after school saving virtual pets from being accidentally deleted by the city’s antivirus, trading tall tales about kids who get caught by the antivirus and get their glasses bricked, and spinning urban legends about ghosts waiting just behind anything that’s visibly rendered, waiting to steal kids when they least expect it. Every detail they introduce is critical to laying the foundation for the mystery that forms the show’s plot.

Everything about this world feels real in a way I’ve never seen in a sci-fi anime. It’s all grounded in a clear understanding of programming, and lives by show-don’t-tell. The stakes aren’t life-and-death; the kids tagging glitches like graffiti to distract the city’s antivirus software are only at risk of ruining their glasses, at least at first. The plot and escalation is perfectly-paced, and the mystery is so satisfying to piece together as it unfolds.

4. ID:Invaded (Sci-fi, action, thriller, murder mystery)

This show is like Psycho-Pass meets Silence of the Lambs. To catch a serial killer, you need to think like a killer, and nobody does that better than killers. A contraption called an “id well” can manifest an uncaught killer’s unconscious mind as a bizarre, unique, deadly terrain driven by stream-of-consciousness, and convicted murderers turned “detectives” dive into these wells to try to solve the mystery each well presents and discern the identity of other killers before they can strike again.

This show is a tightly-written, perfectly paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller. The two layers of mysteries inside and outside of the wells balance high-octane, big-screen action with tight, tense realism. Plus the soundtrack is an absolute banger.

5. Ping Pong the Animation (drama, sports)

Imagine if I told you that there was a show that, in 11 episodes, unpacked how patterns of relationships are repeated across generations, how the tradeoff between talent, practice, and who you are outside of your achievements can scar the spirits of kids, and what it feels like to wrestle with the tension between your core understanding of yourself and how others expect you to be. Imagine if I told you that every major character goes through massive restructurings of their fundamental sense of self and how they see others, and that every single arc comes to a well-rounded and satisfying end. Imagine if the animation style pushed the limits of both realism and absurdity, landing somewhere between rotoscoping and caricature, pushing the impact of action and stretching the character’s expressiveness without betraying faces that are animated like real human people. Imagine that it had a dub so fantastic that it sits next to Baccano and Cowboy Bebop in my mind, shows where the cast threw themselves into their roles with their whole hearts.

Now imagine that I told you that this story is told in the context of high schoolers playing ping pong, and that it’s arguably the best show I’ve ever seen. Go watch this show.

Ayato, Ch 1: The Disappointment

Ayato: I hate small talk. It’s rough and course and irritating, and it gets everywhere. 

Genshin still doesn’t know how to write smart people. Last time it was Kokomi being such a great strategist she could predict ANYTHING, including the Traveller happening to walk past. This time, it’s Ayato playing shogi with Thoma not only not looking at the board, but staring at a wall and presumably reaching behind him to fumble at the pieces like a jackass. Which, if anything, makes him seem dumber. Look, even Yugioh wasn’t dumb enough to do this, and it invented card game parkour. 

He also 100% correctly solves a mystery with zero investigation phase because all the clues fell into his lap, so that’s cool and not impressive at all.  

Telling, not showing, is back in full force. Ayato talks a lot  about how much he hates small talk, even to the point that he suckers us into accompanying him on this quest under the pretext of using us to avoid it, and then just. Engages in SO much small talk, and is never visibly annoyed or bothered about it. Never tries to leave a conversation early. Never tries to make us take over for him, which is why we’re here! 

He also monologues about what a hard worker he is, and how he doesn’t have a lot of free time. He apparently had the time to play shogi while staring at the wall like a jackass, and never actually tries to hurry anything up because he’s got other work to do, so I don’t believe him. There’s a scene where he tries to blow someone off by saying he’s too busy, but he actually wasn’t working - he was staring at a damn wall again. I don’t think this man actually works at all. 

give this man a damn desk and make him sit at it, hyv. that makes the stupid shogi scene work better too; have thoma move all the pieces while ayato is working, and have them verbally inform each other what their moves are. ayato is now multitasking, not staring at a wall like a jackass. whoa

The plot is about as interesting as watching paint dry. Whenever Genshin acts like I know or care about NPCs, it’s wrong - not only do I not care about them, I definitely don’t remember who they are. Since the mystery was so half-hearted (Ayato just walked around talking to people, solved the mystery and was immediately validated, then fixed it), I couldn’t even enjoy that aspect. For some reason, they decided to make us hunt down a tanuki, except it was a couple meters away. Very boring. Artificial padding. Ayato wasn’t even funny about it.

he wasn’t even funny in general. he made a joke once, and then paimon, a terrible straight man with the charisma of a mouldy sock, didn’t get it so hard she forced him to explain the joke.

He also at one point goes on a whole tirade about how if something happens unexpectedly, if the outcome is good, he won’t investigate it and i gotta say if that’s a Smart Inazuman Person’s way of thinking it’s no wonder Kokomi got stuck with all those damn delusions

Ayato is very condescending to Chisato, under the guise of ‘guiding’ her. He’s very sure she can’t make her own decisions. Inazuma is also shockingly sexist, since her marrying into the Kujou Clan seems to be the absolute end of her independence. So much for girlboss island. 

You know, given what we’ve heard of this guy, I was expecting something much more interesting. I think I would’ve actually preferred watching paint dry.

his design is still awful, but he’s fun to play. terrible. WHY IS YELAN’S KIT SO MUCH COOLER THAN HIS??? DAMN 

I’m not even sure why Ayato decided to go visit Chisato and Kamaji, actually... he already knew they were getting married, but I guess we just reminded him he hadn’t visited them yet? Also he sucks our dick real hard. i just want someone to be mean to me. please. just a lil. this doesn’t feel like a real world with real people it feels like a world with people that love the traveller and people that don’t love the traveller YET because they haven’t met them

oh and ayato’s stupid ninja bodyguard was an NPC! at least use sayu???? goddamn are you actively TRYING to make this guy less interesting?!

god, i really hoped this quest would be interesting. i’m just disappointed

Under the blazing midsummer sun, the Yashahimes are fully in the middle of enjoying watermelon breaking. In ‘The Second Chapter’ that will broadcast this fall, will the harsh destiny surrounding the girls also get smashed like a watermelon!?

It’s summer! Leisure! Watermelon breaking! The Yashahimes normally face off against atrocious demons, but their opponent today is a large watermelon. Before the juicy fresh taste, Moroha’s fired up swordsmanship looks even clearer than usual♪

Just as exciting as the fever surrounding the three princess is the arrival of new information regarding ‘Hanyō no Yashahime’ The Second Chapter! There are a lot of things of interest like what will happen to Setsuna who lost her life in the battle with Kirinmaru, the true intent behind Sesshōmaru’s actions, and the whereabouts of Kirinmaru and Zero. But right now, everyone is probably curious about the new character, Rion. It seems she is Kirinmaru’s daughter but why hasn’t she appeared on the center stage before? Also, going forward, how will she affect the story of Towa and the other Yashahimes?

Regarding the growing anticipation of ‘The Second Chapter’, according to the newly appointed director, Hishida Masukazu-san, he is currently working in earnest while placing importance on “How to produce the three Yashahimes so that they are awesome and cute”. We now can’t wait for the day when we get to see the three princesses once again running around powerfully in the Feudal world!

Character Bios

Takechiyo

A young tanuki (racoon dog) demon who works at the “Shikabaneya” which deals in demon bounties. He’s always tough towards Moroha, but he can’t but be surprised by the quickness of her stick!

Moroha

A quarter-demon girl born between Inuyasha and Kagome. Making a living as a bounty hunter and having plenty of experience in battle, breaking watermelons is a piece of cake?

Higurashi Towa

A half-demon girl with Sesshōmaru as her father. She treasures her younger twin sister, Setsuna, more than anything else. She seems like she would happily share the broken watermelon with Setsuna.

What Will Happen to Setsuna’s Life!?

Setsuna

A half-demon girl with Sesshōmaru as her father and Towa’s younger twin sister. She is normally cool, but it seems she can’t help but smile seeing Moroha and the others having fun.

In the final episode of the First Chapter, Setsuna lost her life in the battle with Kirinmaru. Sesshōmaru entrusts a broken Tenseiga to a despairing Towa, as if to tell her to revive Setsuna with the sword. Tenseiga is a sword that can revive a dead person just once but is it still possible with it being broken?

What About the Reunion with Parents!?

“Towa, Setsuna, Sesshōmaru, and Rin” and “Moroha, Inuyasha, and Kagome”, whether each family be able to safely meet or not is one of the biggest points of interest in ‘The Second Chapter’. Rin sleeping within the Tree of Ages with her fate still tied to Zero and the safety of Inuyasha and Kagome who have been imprisoned in the black pearl is of interest.

Kirinmaru’s Daughter Makes Her Appearance!

One of the key people in ‘The Second Chapter’ is Kirinmaru’s daughter, Rion. According to Director Hishida “While Rion was raised properly, the parent-child relationship between her and Kirinmaru has become quite complicated”. We want to hurry and find out the parent-child back story between Kirinmaru and Rion!

— There is a feeling of ‘Who would’ve thought Director Hishida’ but please tell us the details of how you were appointed as director.

The Three Girls Will Grow Up Little by Little

Hishida: Since the announcing of the ‘Hanyō no Yashahime’ project, it seems there was a large echo to “create ‘The Second Chapter’ as quickly as possible”. It’s just that the previous Teruo-san (Director Satō Teruo) already had his next assignment set so they reached out to me to be his successor. Producer Naka Hisakazu-kun joined Sunrise when I was directing my first work “Onmyō Taisenki” and he oversaw production; it seems he remembered my name in the corner of his mind. For me, I made my production debut with ‘Inuyasha’ so when I received talks of this work that has gathered everyone I’m indebted to, I thought “I absolutely cannot refuse this job and it’s my destiny to accept it!”

— It has been roughly 20 years but please tell us some of your memorable moments from back when you were working on ‘Inuyasha’.

Hishida: Not only was I in the production rotation, but I was also a production assistant, so I think I was involved in all the episodes in some way in the first year. I remember back then my senior (senpai) producers pushed a lot of things onto me *laughs*. The flash of Tessaiga’s “Wind Scar” turning up boulders and the effects of Miroku’s “Wind Tunnel” were things I came up with after receiving the unreasonable request of “You think of something” from my senior producers. At the time, it was a cell animation only anime, so I remember struggling quite a bit to produce something flashy with only a limited number of moves.

Also, I created the sequence flow of Sesshōmaru (destroying) countless demons into little pieces. At the time, I had only just started doing digital drawing but because I went overboard with it, the CG person got angry with me like “Because you made such a difficult thing (it became the standard), it’s gotten rough for me!” *laughs*. However, those materials were used as *bank shots for ‘Inuyasha, The Final Act’ and the current ‘The Second Chapter’. No one else will say it so I will, but I was quite involved in building the foundation for ‘Inuyasha’!

— That is quite the meritorious deed. Regarding work on ‘The Second Chapter’, what sort of plan do you have?

Hishida: In terms of art creation, continuing Teruo-san’s direction is the foundation. Also, an important aspect is how much will we be able to produce the three Yashahimes in way that makes them awesome and cute.

This time, I told everyone in the production/storyboard team “In ‘Hanyō no Yashahime”, the girls are the stars, so I want you to think about how to make them shine on screen”. With Inuyasha and Sesshōmaru, I think it’s fine to just have them stand in a savage wasteland, but we specially have girls, so I wanted to be a little conscious of the showy aspect. I separated from Sunrise after ‘Inuyasha’ and created anime that was geared towards primary school girls at other studios, so while utilizing that experience, I want to depict the courageous Yashahimes.

— What are some overall highlights for ‘The Second Chapter’?

Hishida: The process of the three girls slowly growing up will be depicted, so I think that’s a point worth noting. For those with children, I would certainly like for them to watch from a parental point-of-view. Also, in ‘The Second Chapter’ all of them will get new weapons. On the point of getting stronger both physically and psychologically, the flow will inherit from ‘Inuyasha’, and will have not just a shōnen manga component but also a fun factor that I think is possible with ‘Hanyō no Yashahime’. By all means, please watch over the development of the three (girls).
