Shameless Tuesdays: Livre 136 | Nick Hudson

It's been nearly three years since The Academy of Sun's Nick Hudson last invaded the Shameless Tuesdays playlist. The frontman brings his Ben Folds on Broadway sound & mentality to a brand-new solo album called Kanda Teenage Honey, coming out on March 15. The first taste of that honey can be heard on the leading single "For My Silence", a beautiful lament about apologizing for not being around during the bad times. Recorded in Georgia (the country, not the American state) in a former Soviet studio, Hudson's sneak peek shows delivers the beauty and tragedy that Kanda Teenage Honeywill more than likely showcase. In the heat of protest, Nick Hudson gives us a new Shameless Tuesdays playlist that's brimming with righteous anarchy!

Year: 1951

Designer: Edith Head

This has been called the most copied dress in cinema history. It was a bit of a gamble for Edith Head, as she knew there would be a long lead time before the film was released, and she had to predict whether the New Look would stay in fashion that long. Not only did it stay, but this particular dress became a sensation and set the style for party and prom dresses for years to come. As one blogger wrote, "It's hard to remember when the silhouette of this dress was not in our public consciousness; it's that much of a mainstay in fashion now."

Ms. Head's own comments on the gown: “For the debut gown, I relied on flowers, little violets, to accent the bodice, and I sprinkled them on the skirt. The dress became especially dramatic because I made the skirt exceedingly full, with yards and yards of tulle over a pastel underskirt, and the flowers made the bust look fuller. The combination of the full bust and wide skirt accented the waist, making it appear even smaller than it was.” Another website notes that the dress consisted of "six layers of white net over pale mint green taffeta, studded with single velvet violets and a bodice covered in white velvet violets."

At least two copies of the dress have survived (multiple ones were made for the film), and one is on display at Grauman's Chinese Theater. Below is a recreation of the dress for the stage show A Conversation with Edith Head, showing how it may have looked when new.

Does the academy have clubs or any extracurricular activities? If so what kind and are the ROs part of any of them?

Aurelian Academy does, yes! A lot of them I probably won’t truly offer as a feature— barring potential small side stories— as I feel they’d make the story a bit more convoluted.

For a couple of them:

Aquatics — As the name suggests, this club mainly deals with water and aquatic life. You’d expect to spend time out on the lake on campus, within the underwater school (for the aquatic species) learning about various animals/plants, and even interacting with a couple of them!

Equestrian — A club for the ones that enjoy horseback riding, but with an added twist! As you’ll meet a variety of species— from a Hippogriff to a Carnivyr (carnivorous horse). You’d also go on rides across the various trails that Aurelian, and Avalon, has to offer.

Student Council — Pretty self explanatory… The student council deals with a variety of topics that may influence student life within Aurelian; planning dances, various outings within Avalon, guest speakers, and more! All of it being overseen by the Headmistress herself.

(Magical) Dueling — A difficult club to get into, as it’s mainly for students that have an affinity for the magical arts (like wizards/witches). However, anyone, and everyone, is welcome to watch, and cheer on, the duelists during skirmishes or actual tournaments.

Media — For avid film/television fans that wish to discuss various movies/shows and debunk popular theories about them. Lots of movie nights and binge watching various shows— followed by (sometimes) heated discussions about what has been consumed.

I don’t think any of the ROs are part of any clubs, no… At least not that I have planned. People are trying to get both Scarlett and Cyrus/Cyra to join student council though. 😂

Demon Wars: Down In Flames (2023) MARVEL - Magik is reimagined as the demonic halfbreed Itsuki in Peach Momoko’s Marvel universe.

X-Men #24 (2023) MARVEL - Illyana engages Pogg-Ur-Pogg in a rhyme battle during a sword fight.

Dark Web: Finale #1 (2023) Magik exchanges sarcastic banter with a demonic combatant.
