are Hanukkah sweaters a Jewish thing? i've seen them before but 90% of the time, they're people trying to make christmas displays more "inclusive." so are they legit Jewish or no?

Rating: Capitalism.

Hanukkah sweaters are a prime example of what I previously characterized as "capitalism's tendency to tepidly repackage any Christmas symbols in literally or metaphorically blue-and-silver wrapping paper to appeal to a Jewish market." As the "ugly sweater" phenomenon has grown more popular, retailers saw an excellent opportunity to widen their market by having "Hanukkah" versions.

That said, there's a wide range of Hanukkah sweaters out there, some of which are more problematic than others. Ones that are literally just recolored Christmas designs with a couple Jewish-y things tacked on, like this "Shalom Gnome" design or this "Oy to the World" design are more problematic than enthusiastically tacky designed-from-the-beginning-to-be-Jewish ones. The former says "Hanukkah! It's Christmas for Jews! Jews! They're just Christians without Santa or Jesus!" while the latter says, "Oh, you're going to walk around with an eyesore sweater full of tinsel and actual little jingle bells as though anyone could possibly forget that it's Christmas season in this country? I see you, I see you, and I'm just going to casually wear this sweater with a menorah and candles that actually light up because Judaism rocks, that's why."

Then there's a whole genre of Hanukkah sweaters with, let's say, more adult content, and people's mileage may greatly vary on how they feel about them. Personally, I find the ones riffing off more secular aspects of the holiday to be largely harmless, such as this "You Spin Me Right Round, Baby" design with dreidels. On the other hand, while some may find it amusingly subversive, I find ones making fun of the religious part of the holiday (i.e., the actual hanukkiah/menorah) to be in poor taste at best. There are a plethora of "let's get lit" Hanukkah sweaters like this one that genuinely annoy me. (For one thing, Hanukkah isn't even a drinking holiday! If you want a drinking holiday, we actually have those but Hanukkah isn't it!) Ones like this that make it into a creepy pick-up line actively disgust me. And this "gelt digger" one is genuinely antisemetic, given the stereotypes about Jews and money.

I would be remiss not to mention what I personally think is the best of the Hanukkah sweater subgenres: animal puns. My fiance owns this Meowzel Tov sweater with a truly garish design. What does "mazel tov" have to do with Hanukkah, you may ask? Absolutely nothing, but hey, cats! Can't be upset about Jewish cats! Similarly, llamas? Not Jewish at all! But Happy Llamakka? Okay, cute pun, cute graphic, I'm reluctantly charmed. Your Menorasaurus would not be kosher for actual use as the candles are all different heights, but you know what, that actually makes me smile.

So, basically: If you get joy out of being loudly Jewish during a season where everything is yelling about Christianity all the time, go ahead and wear your ridiculous ugly sweater to the company party. Just take a close look at the design to make sure it's not actually full of Christmas trees, not pretending something extremely Christmas is Jewish because it's a pun now, doesn't use Charedi men as a cartoon stand-in for anyone Jewish, and doesn't makes being Jewish primarily about not being Christian.

In sum: RIP my browser history, I'm going to be getting such terrible ads for the next several weeks. Click the links at your own risk.

Venus Return observations

you guys wanted some more observation posts so here you go!!

readings for these types of charts are open :)

these observations were made using whole signs

how to open your venus return chart: type in “venus return chart” in your browser and click on the first link you see (should be astroseek). insert your birth info and under “return of the planet” click on venus. select the year you want to see your chart for, however it is possible that you won’t have a return chart every year so you may have to use previous/future years

-> having the 1st house ruler in the first means that you could be more confident in the way you express affection/charm/flirting with others.

-> moon in 1st house could be a year where you focus more on self-care

-> the vertex in your return chart and where it lies in your natal chart can show where you may receive compliments or events/experiences having to do with pleasure/fun:

vertex in the 12th house can mean doing unusual/new activities (especially in isolation) that you find fun

vertex in the 5th can mean more recognition for your talents/hobbies

vertex in the 2nd house can mean some experiences with money (positive/negative depending on planets aspecting it)

-> 10th house stellium shows that you may be more popular or be getting more recognition for your art/fashion/charm

-> whereas a 6th house stellium can show someone who finds pleasure and fun in improving their artistic sense AND/OR the native could feel as if pleasurable things have more responsibility now, this could actually mean getting big bucks but also what should be pleasurable (art, music, dance, love) may feel more like a chore or a sacrifice now. i actually see significant 6th house placements in this chart where celebrities have gotten big publicity/success that year (olivia rodrigo, doja cat, billie eilish)

-> 9th house ruler in the 9th shows really important experiences that may help you better your philosophy on self-love, friendships, romantic love, etc… i had this and it was legit one of the best years of my life

-> planets/signs in the 2nd house show what the money/ situation is like that year (ex: mercury shows that you profit off of writing, marketing, communication exchange, etc… or having sagittarius in the 2nd could mean doing something new and exciting that deals with immigration/travel)

-> you should look forward to a year where you have sagittarius rising in this chart…abundance, new experiences, fresh slate :)

-> which house venus sits in for this chart shows how you will find pleasure/happiness/harmony,etc:

venus in 7th = reliable partnerships being formed, possibly getting into a romantic relationship

venus in 8th = easier time in reforming relationships, relationships/art/money are shown in a new light and bring value/worth to your current life

venus in 9th = blessed with a larger perspective on life this year, forming relationships with people outside of your comfort zone

-> natal OR venus return jupiter/part of fortune conjunct venus return rising can mean having an easier time getting what you desire

-> mars in the 7h can mean breaking away from a relationship for your own pleasure/relief

-> jupiter in the 8th can indicate good experiences coming to you from others (sex, vacations, money, etc…)

-> but i think having an 8th house stellium in this chart is bittersweet because it shows that venusian topics may become more of a responsibility/burden, it can limit the way that you want enjoy yourself for that year, BUT as with most 8th house topics, you come out the either side wiser and with a stronger sense of direction and purpose.

-> jupiter in the 4th house, especially if it’s well aspected, on the ic, or in a sign that it likes (cancer, sagittarius, pisces) can show that you make wealth from doing hobbies at home

-> when the sun is in detriment/fall, you could feel less appreciated during that year

-> saturn on the mc can mean that your putting out a lot artistic content for that year or there may be a lot of pressure on your social reputation (another success indicator in my opinion)

-> whereas saturn on the ic can show that the pleasurable/fun experiences you have at home present obstacles, there's something preventing fulfillment of compassion, love, etc... with family. difficult placement in my experience

-> mercury conjunct part of fortune (whether that be in the venus return chart alone or x natal) means that people agree and get along with you better

-> venus return moon conjunct natal ascendant indicates a year where you will feel extremely sentimental and passionate about the things and people you love, you may be reconnecting with old hobbies and interests you left behind

-> sun square mars in the venus return chart means that you're really trying to get attention in an artistic/romantic/connection (depends on what houses the square is in) sense, but you could struggle to feel satisfied, may be an overall unsatisfying year especially if detriment/fall placements are involved (if its >3 degrees orb i wouldn't worry too much)

-> may be obvious, but planets/asteroids that are conjunct your venus highlight important themes for that year:

venus conjunct mars - a year where you may be working more on your hobbies, looks, compassion, etc... depending on the sign indicates succeeding in your goals

venus conjunct saturn/pluto - transformative year, may change your viewpoint on current and future friendships, artistic pleasures, and overall how to find more happiness/fulfillment in your life

venus conjunct mercury - knowledge (book smart), charisma, and social exchanges (online and in-person) are highly beneficial for this year

the cpn of them knowing each other and interacting even before cql casting is not new. i love this “new idea” of them being familiar with who the other is because of this CP between them lol. these two are no stranger to searching their names and i would think they did it more frequently earlier in their career. so when they do, the other person’s name comes up. 😂😂😂😂 then they “meet each other” in ttxs and think oh this is the dude people ship me with. lol

If you don't have a dedicated ereader device it may not be obvious that downloading fic to read as an ebook could have any advantages over just reading online, but here are a few!

More control over appearance - you can change the font, size, spacing, background and text colors (depending on what app you use)

Can still read it if you go offline

Can still read it if the author deletes for some reason

Harder to lose your place because it won't randomly refresh the page on you

This one's subjective but I personally am less prone to distraction when I'm reading as an ebook than when I'm reading in a browser

Bonus: you can set most ereader apps to infinite scroll (rather than 'turning pages') so you get that fic reading experience even in published books! This has legit helped me get better about reading books.

While I'm trying not to dissolve in a puddle of stress (every time my graphics card kicks in or the PC makes a noise of any sort, I legit yelp, "I'm sorry!" and quickly close the browser), I've managed to almost finish "15 Minutes" chapter 7 still by hand. I'd scan a page so you could see my nearly indecipherable "writing" but I don't dare hook the printer up just yet so, no scanning. 🤷‍♀️

I'm going to write out another full draft by hand to start fixing some of the most obvious "first draft" stuff, then I'll start marking up spot-rewrites, where I end up looking like I've drawn a very poor treasure map in crayon and despair, trying to find space to rewrite larger blocks of text.

Then I'll write all of THAT over by hand. And then I'll try entering it into Google docs. I don't have Word on here and am not willing to risk that just yet, but there's something weirdly uncomfortable to me about Google docs. Maybe I just need to make the font bigger? It's definitely too small for me to read comfortably at this point.

Yeah, I just need to customize it a bit more, make it more homey. I like absolutely adore that it pretty much autosaves constantly, that makes it feel less likely that I'll lose a lot of work if we should suddenly end up with the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.

I think part of why I’m so mad personally about the whole James Somerton mess - aside from all the plagiarism - is that he introduced me to series I’d never heard of before. A friend had mentioned Killing Stalking to me, but couldn’t remember the name, so I had no idea what it was until that video of his popped up in my YouTube recommendations.

I’d never heard of Painter of the Night (real talk though, lol, there was way too much glowing white censored peen columns in that for my ace ass; I did so much scrolling trying to get past all the porn to get to the actual story, which I legit liked).

I’d have never have heard of Helluva Boss, which I watched in one sitting and love. I’ve got the Amazon pages for some manga he mentioned, No. 6 and O-kaeri Alice, on tabs in my browser. They’ve been there basically waiting for me to go ahead and order them.

He introduced me to all this stuff I like now that he made seem interesting, when the fact of the matter is, he probably didn’t know the first thing about any of it. He wore other people’s interests like a comfortable old coat, something he could pull out and put on wherever he wanted to.

What is uBlock Origin?

Glad you asked! It’s a browser extension available for users of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome (derogatory). It is THE best adblocker out there in terms of scope, options, power, reliability and speed. It is not available for Safari users (derogatory) because Safari does not allow you to use any kinds of content blockers with the kind of power that uBlock Origin has. If you must use Safari, obtain a copy of ghostery. It is nowhere near as good as uBlock Origin or even adguard, but it is actually functional and legit, which cannot be said for most other “adblockers” purportedly available for Safari. Sidenote: uBlock Origin does not have a website of its own. The closest you’ll get is their subreddit, which you 100% should check out. If you use reddit, you can even get other people and uBlock devs to help you troubleshoot issues that you encounter.

OK, but, like what makes uBlock origin better than MY adblocker/no adblocker?

SO glad you asked! Ok, so you know how I said above that uBlock Origin is an adblocker? Well, technically it’s really a “content blocker”.

What does this mean?

So, when you get something like adblock or adblock plus or adguard or whatever, the creator of the extension make and maintains the block lists and can do whatever they want with them. They block ads. Supposedly.

But uBlock Origin? YOU can block whatever annoying adverts OR clutter on pages that you’d like. You control which filters the extension uses, can write your own filters, use the extension’s element picker to physically select an element to block on screen, or use filter lists created by other users. (Highly recommend checking out the filter lists you can add from here, here and the listed ones here in the uBlock subreddit’s FAQ. Also recommend you check out Peter Lowe’s Ad tracking list.) The extension comes out of the box with a bunch of pre-added super useful lists, and you can expand on this by adding whatever other ones you’d like.

Also uBlock Origin blocks ALL ads on YouTube. You can even remove the recommended videos column on the right hand side of your screen with this filter list. YouTube premium whomst??

But let me show you the ublock difference using screenshots! I will be screenshotting with ublock in Firefox and with no adblocker in safari.

tldr; the internet is godawful and unusable without ad blocking and uBlock origin is the best tool for the job. Also, you should switch to firefox, because I have heard rumours that google intends to join safari in the anti-adblocking crusade. There are numerous other reasons to switch, but, uh, that’s another post entirely. Finally, I am not personally affiliated with raymond hill (creator of uBlock Origin) or the mozilla foundation, I am simply a fan of their work.
