The Company You Keep (2023-) | Season 1, Episode 1 | on Hulu | Favorite scenes (vol.1)
/ Honestly, I'm so hyped about this show, the premise is promising (con-man meeting and falling in love with an undercover agent) and I love the chemistry between Charlie and Emma.

In case anyone hasn’t heard it yet, apparently Hulu and Disney+ are following Netflix’s clown shoe footsteps and will be cracking down on password sharing starting in March I think?
Apparently that decision earned Netflix “millions of new subscribers” but even without checking I’m willing to call bullshit. Maybe they did but it doesn’t mean anything if you LOST a similar number of subscribers
So anyway. Personally I’m not losing much to those two (esp not d+ cuz I don’t use it) but I figured others should probably be aware

If you’re in the USA and meant to watch or rewatch The Company You Keep you have one day left to do it before Hulu pulls it. Unless somewhere down the line another streaming service picks it up, it’s about to vanish forever.

long (like ridiculously long) rant about watcher entertainment
Whilst the vast majority of the response to the watcher drama has been negative I still have seen a few people expressing opinions along the lines of ‘oh its just $6’  ‘shouldn't creators be paid for their work’ etc. I also think this situation is getting a lot of attention from people who don't necessarily watch Watcher, or haven’t keep up with them in years so here is my breakdown of why people are unhappy with the announcement that Watcher will be putting ALL upcoming content behind a $6 a month streaming service (with the exception of the premiere episode of each season going to Youtube.)
The issue is not that it's $6.
The success of other internet companies like dropout and smosh is proof people are willing to pay for content they enjoy and to support independent content creators. I personally have given money to kickstarters, patreons, digital downloads etc in the past. But I do that because I know I’m valued as a fan with and without my money. I still get access to content on youtube for free. Even Dropout, who is a much larger and more expensive operation than Watcher, releasing 5 show a week, still maintains a steady Youtube presence.
The thing with these internet companies is they can be successful in creating something but they do have to understand that you are on the internet. You're not netflix or HBO or hulu or whatever. Watcher’s obsession with creating ‘television-calibre content’ worth $6 a month whilst also only having one show a week is unrealistic. They want to be independent creators but also television producers… but you’re not!  They hate being youtubers so much but YOU ARE. That’s how you gained a fanbase in the first place and you were successful at it! If you’re not happy being a youtuber that’s fine, move on and do something else. But you can’t expect it to be funded by the fans. So many famous artists create content they care less about that has a larger audience, and that in turn funds the stuff they DO care about. If you’re so dedicated to making expensive, high-quality productions you should be using these smaller cheaper shows to save money and fund them, rather than forcing everyone of your fans to pay a monthly subscription fee that I’m sorry, just isnt worth it or is simply unaffordable for the majority of your audience who you have now essentially told aren’t welcome or valued by you. And which one is it?
Such a large percentage of your audience are casual viewers too. Why cut out that completely? What fans are you expecting to follow you to this ? Your most dedicated fans are there because they like Ryan and Shane, so why not push that? Are you trying to appeal to your fans or are you trying to make the content you want. There’s no clear creative direction that makes sense with this move and that’s why people aren’t supporting you.
Also I’m sorry but how can we suddenly trust the content is gonna improve once we start funding it when there’s already been so many missteps both in their content and their business. Look at how many fans have said Ghost Files and Mystery Files have started feeling phoned in. Their patreon has been mismanaged for years, they barely promote it and the perks on there aren't really worth it (but they have 6000 paying members because people can and do want to support them!). They go months having barely any merch. There are ways to make money on youtube, they’re just not doing it well .
And I’m sorry. But there is just absolutely no reason to have 25 employees. Shows like Survival mode should be cheap and easy to produce, and help bring in money to support larger ventures like ghost files. So why are there 18 people credited for a video of you playing Minecraft? And of course I don’t want people to lose their jobs. But continuing with this is going to cause EVERYONE to lose their jobs regardless.
They also barely have a plan for their new content. People watch for Ryan and Shane, you KNOW THAT. So why is your first new big show hiring the worth it boys and doing a globe-trotting, crazily expensive show. Are you even really expanding your content if you’re still sticking to a one-video-a-week schedule with no present plan to change that? They have a survey for subscribers to vote which past show to bring back, but there’s obviously a major budget difference between filming something like Weird Wonderful World and something like SD&D&D… or at least there should be but there isn't when you employ 20 people to make one video. There’s such a clear lack of thought put into it that makes me even less likely to want to support.
I want to say that they probably expected a negative backlash and thought they could just wait it out… but did they? Because WHY did they hype this up like it was an insane new announcement fans would go wild for. WHY do this several days before you have live shows where you let fans ask questions live to your faces? So much of this roll out makes absolutely no sense and makes Ryan, Shane, and Steve look so ridiculously out-of-touch with their fanbase, which only makes fans feel even less supportive.
I think their defenders think we want to see Watcher crash and burn but the majority of us don't. I want them to be successful but this isn't the way to do it and I truly do believe it’s going to ruin their company. Unfortunately as much as I love them, I wont be supporting them.

Doll - Matt Sturniolo
Tumblr media
summary : you and matt spend the evening together, being all cute, and you give him a manicure.
I lie back on the bed, my eyes resting, as boredom washes over me. Matthew had just left a little bit ago, taking Nick over to Madi’s house, leaving me alone with nothing to do. If Chris were here, I’d go bother him for some entertainment, but he’s out with Sam. I could’ve rode with Matt, but I’m not really feeling up to getting out. I just want to stay home and be lazy.
With a sigh leaving my mouth, I grab the remote next to me and place my other arm behind my head, propping myself up. Turning the TV on, I click on Hulu, ready to put on a show to keep me occupied for the time being. Of course, I play 911. I barely get ten minutes into it, and I’m already falling asleep.
I don’t know how long I’ve been asleep, but I’m suddenly woken by the bed dipping and a warm figure softly embracing me from behind. His scent instantly fills my nose and I immediately know it’s Matthew. I can’t help but melt into his touch, molding into him as if we are one.
“Sorry it took me so long, baby.” He whispers into my hair, pressing a soft kiss to the back of my head.
“It’s okay. I’m just glad you’re back.” I sleepily reply, rolling over so I’m now facing him.
He stares down at me with his piercing blue eyes, his facial features soft. I can’t help but admire him, taking in every one of his beautiful attributes. He’s truly the most perfect person I’ve ever laid eyes on.
“I miss you like crazy when you’re not around.” I mumble, interlocking our hands.
He pulls me in closer, my body flush against his, and his big, warm hand rubbing up and down my back. “Being away from you is my least favorite thing in the world. I feel like I can’t breathe without you.”
“Is that toxic?” I ask, a giggle emitting from my mouth.
He playfully rolls his eyes, resting his chin atop my head. “If that’s toxic, then I’m nothing but a red flag.”
We both quietly laugh together, enjoying each other’s company. It’s always easy with Matt. I’m always laughing and smiling when I’m with him, enjoying every little thing we do, even when all we do is sit and talk. Spending time with him is definitely my favorite thing to do.
His arms tighten around me and swiftly pull me on top of him, our eyes connecting once more. His hand reaches up and pushes a strand of hair behind my ear, showcasing my face. I watch him intently, noticing his eyes glancing over every detail of my face. My cheeks heat up the slightest bit as he examines me, now feeling a tad self conscious under his intense stare. His hand caresses my cheek, his thumb brushing back and forth over the smooth skin. He then begins to outline my lips with said finger, soaking in my so called beauty.
“You’re such a pretty girl.” He whispers, his breath fanning my face. “My pretty girl.”
His lips connect to mine, repeatedly peppering soft, innocent kisses to them. Both of his hands hold my face, inching me closer to him as he deepens our kiss. Our mouths move together, perfectly and passionately, speaking the volume of our love without using words. I crave every inch of this man beneath me, yearning for the simplest touches from him. The way he always subconsciously kept physical contact with me every chance he could actually drove me insane.
“I love you.” I whisper against his lips, running my hands through his soft hair.
“I love you more, doll.” He smiles into another kiss, interlocking our hands once more.
Once we pull away, I can’t help but admire him again. He truly is something out of this world. I bring his hands to my lips, placing soft kisses over his knuckles, a warm smile never leaving my lips. Suddenly, his nails catch my eye, bringing an idea to my mind that caused me to let out a gasp as the smile on my face grew wider.
“Baby, can I do your nails? Please!” I ask, dragging out the plead.
A soft chuckle leaves his mouth as he nods, making me clap in excitement. I swiftly get up from his lap and prance over to my desk, beckoning him to follow me. With the grin widely plastered over his face, he gets up and makes his way over to me. I motion for him to sit on my chair while I eagerly look for all of the supplies I’ll need. I usually do my own nails, so I do have a bunch of supplies for manicures and whatnot.
As I’m gathering everything, Matt connects his phone to the speaker and starts a playlist for us. With my hands full, I make my way back to Matt and empty my arms onto the desk, scattering everything out. I separate it all; the nail files, nail clippers, cuticle pushers, buffers, cuticle oil, stickers, base coat, and top coat.
“Do you want anything specific?” I ask as I turn the overhead lamp on.
“No, you can just do whatever you want.” He answers, his hands meeting my waist and pulling me to straddle his lap.
“You want me to do your nails, right?” I question, an amused smile making its way into my mouth.
“Of course. You can do them right here, doll.” He grins, rubbing my thighs up and down.
I shrug, more than comfortable with the position and proceed to start his nails. The entire time, we’re both just goofing off and having a good laugh together. He keeps sneaking in little kisses, singing the lyrics of our favorite songs to me, trying to peek at his nails.
“Matthew!” I scold him, laughing at the way he keeps trying to pull his hand from me to see exactly what I’m doing.
“I can’t help it! I don’t want you to draw a penis on me.” He defends himself, a small smile displaying on his lips.
“I’m literally using stickers! Does it look like I have any peepee stickers?” I sarcastically retort.
“I wouldn’t be surprised.” He mumbles, giving me his hand back.
I let out a gasp and shove his shoulder for his remark, causing him to burst out laughing. He tosses his head back, his mouth wide open as angelic laughter falls from it. His body shakes from the harmonious sounds, jiggling me on his lap. I can’t help but look at him with admiration and love, knowing he’s all I’ve ever wanted, and he’s mine. As his laughter dies down, I place a sweet kiss to his lips.
I scoot back from him just a bit, holding his hands out so he can see the results. It’s just an average manicure with blue hearts on a few fingers. He smiles down at his hands, admiring the art, before looking back up at me.
“I love them.” He says, planting another kiss to my lips. “Can I do yours?”
I raise my eyebrows and look down at my nails that I had just down yesterday. They’re just a basic white color, but they could use some design.
“Can I put stickers on yours?” He asks, his doe eyes hopeful.
“Yeah. Of course, baby.” I smile, about to stand up when he places his hands on my hips, halting my movement.
“No. Stay right here, doll.” He speaks, his voice low.
I look down at him, nodding my head, waiting for his next move. He most definitely has a way with words. He reached behind me and starts rummaging through the stickers laid out on the desk. I study his face, watching the way his eyes light up and a grin makes its way to his lips. He looks back up at me and covers my nails, so that I can’t see what he’s doing, causing me to laugh and look away.
It only took him maybe five minutes before he finished. He examined the nails, a satisfied look overcoming his face. He grabs my hands, placing a kiss on both of them before letting them go for me to see.
“Do you like?” He questions, reading my reaction.
There were blue hearts along every finger, and a silver letter M on my ring finger.
I smile, nodding, “Yes, I love them. Thanks, baby.”
He brings me in closer, his lips meeting mine in a gentle kiss, conveying our love for one another.
“If you couldn’t tell, the M placement means you’re gonna be my wife one day, doll.” He whispers against my lips.
I can’t help the smile that grows on me, connecting our lips again, confirming his statement.

❛  Karolina Teague was hardly famous. Her name carried a certain heft among culture critics whose heyday had passed, but she liked the anonymity that came with being washed up. All of her favorite people were has-beens, after all, and she wasn’t ashamed to spend her time reminiscing about days past with them or anyone else who would listen. Today, she welcomed a whole crew of listeners into her Nakawe home—a film crew to be exact, led by a director-producer duo who had known her name well before a previous interviewee mentioned it to them. She wouldn’t be the star of their documentary, but they believed from its inception that the story wouldn’t be complete without her thoughts.
❧ honestly very proud of the scrapbooking !!!! this is basically just shameless exposition, but i am convinced i picked a creative vehicle for it :^) i watched that 90s docuseries on hulu a year ago and this specific story post was born fjdhjf anyway, canonically, no one would be writing or printing in script like that but i am simply NOT that committed to my worldbuilding sdkjfsf consider this whole thing an english language reimagining (^:

Karolina took them on a tour of her colorful seaside house, one concluding in a room already set up for their perusal. It was the archive, she explained. This was what they came for; her recollections were valuable, but she had so much more than her own memories. Photographs waited on the tables, and an old television screen teased some scene from exclusive VHS tapes. Karolina plopped down onto a sofa and gestured widely, saying, “Have a look. I’m ready when you are.”
The director, a woman named Ildaria, picked up a photograph.
“Can you tell us about her?”
Karolina beckoned for the photo, and Ildaria walked over to hand it to her. For a moment, she peered at it, keeping everyone in suspense. Finally, she replied, “Sure. What’s she going to do, sue me?”
“Maybe,” a cameraman elsewhere in the room snorted.
“I’ll take the risk,” Karolina laughed. “Look, I don’t know Princess Leonor, but I met her plenty of times. She was at The Den at least half the nights in 1991, for sure. Probably into 1992, but I didn’t really keep track of her comings and goings. Definitely not after 1993.”
The producer, Eilo, held up another photograph. “What’s the story here?” he asked.
Karolina reached for it. Unlike the other photo, this one was a proper candid. There were several people in the frame, but Leonor was at the center, kneeling by a table with her hand draped across Renzo’s thigh as he held her head in his palm and said something beyond the capture of still photography.
“It wasn’t anything formal,” Karolina explained. “Renzo didn’t date anyone in those days, and I don’t think she did either. They liked each other. It was mutual fascination with zero understanding, is how I saw it. They hung out—liked each other’s company. Hot and fast, burned out quick, that’s what it looked like.” She shrugged. “That was Renzo.”
“And Leonor?” Ildaria asked, having sat down nearby.
“Like I said,” Karolina began. She seemed to be choosing her words carefully. “I didn't know her. Seemed like a cool girl. I’m older, mind you. I think she wanted to get a little wild and try new things—this is off the record—and The Den was for her what it was for everyone. You could kick your shoes off. Scream along to your buddy’s new song, have a movie star tell you his woes while he pours your drink, get high in the dressing room and probably be fine—”
“Did she do that?” Ildaria’s eyes were wide.
Karolina cleared her throat. “No, of course not. Not everyone did! Enough, sure. We all know the quote-unquote horror stories.”
The crew listened, rapt, having stopped flipping through albums and poking around the bookcases, eager to hear something explosive. They had set out to make a documentary about a particular time and place. The Den at the turn of the century was their subject. That glorious decade solidified its place in celebrity culture, to say nothing of its place in music history. The princess was just a footnote in that story. Nonetheless, it was a tantalizing footnote. Most people below a certain age were shocked to hear that she hadn’t been a humorless, buttoned-up bureaucrat her entire life. The idea that someone whose day job involved keeping the country afloat may have once been young and reckless intrigued. That she was adjacent to the salacious stories of sex, drugs, and rock and roll they knew better nearly crossed the line into unbelievable. Yet, people in Uspana also knew their royals had been wrapped up in the glamor of celebrity for decades. Even now, they continued to rub elbows with rock stars, including the one elder princess who was herself a music star.
“She’s a different person now, clearly,” Karolina continued. She spoke tentatively still but nonetheless addressed what everyone wanted to know. “But, for a time, she was at The Den with everyone else, drinking too much and carrying around a pharmacy in whatever cute purse you had that night. You may remember there was a big Reyes death around then. It’s like—when my mother died in 2009, I lost my shit, too.”
Karolina shrugged again. “She was having fun. I was doing worse, alright, so I only feel judgmental about it insofar as she’d probably be embarrassed if you asked her about any of it today. Royals are supposed to do their sniffing in private, right, not in a bathroom Renzo forgot to hire someone to clean. She was snobby, but my sense was that she liked pretending she wasn’t—roleplay, you know, transgressing or whatever.”
Someone coughed. The rifling through materials resumed. Ildaria and Eilo shared a look.
“You haven’t talked to her since ‘92?” Ildaria asked. Eilo, meanwhile, had pulled out his cell phone and was typing with fast fingers.
Karolina shook her head. “So, she knew I’d asked Renzo to let me collect photos and bring along my Zenith. I got a weird email in 2000 inquiring about them from someone who worked for her.” She grinned, then added as an aside, “Only one recording, by the way. The Den had a strict no video policy.”
“We’d like to see them sometime,” Ildaria responded.
Karolina nodded, then shook her head and clarified, “Which—my tapes or the email?”
Eilo answered without looking up, “Both.”
He finished what he was doing after a moment of quiet, then held his phone up for Ildaria and Karolina to see. “Seems like she’s still in touch with people,” he said.
They leaned forward to view the screen while he swiped at it, then Karolina laughed.  “Okay, maybe she just didn’t like me!”
While they watched, Eilo moved through a hastily thrown together slideshow of the princess with various people Karolina knew well. Some looked like event photos. Others were captured with long lenses—paparazzi shots that made money but didn’t always generate enough interest if the other person was a comparative nobody. Not everyone had evolved in the last thirty years. Plenty of people who visited the bar during the decade of Renzo’s ownership continued to have flourishing careers. They were, at the time, young and beautiful and painfully unprepared for the lifetime of celebrity ahead of them. That’s what they brought to this place more than anything: their pain, which, being creative types, they eagerly spun into something beautiful and private.
That’s what The Den gave them. These impossibly talented, dedicated stars created fleeting things for each other and no one else. Bands and dance troupes formed. An endless stream of songs and poetry and performance art kept the bar’s little stage occupied nightly for years. Offstage, people with no reason to meet in the real world bonded in this space of both contrived and undeniable intimacy. For some, the reprieve helped them endure the difficulty of becoming that invariably attended a rise in fame. It was detrimental to others. These were the ones who didn’t evolve—people who gave up their relevance to live forever in this meaningless, generative privacy or people who couldn’t make the choice and lost everything in the process.
Karolina hadn’t evolved, but she hadn’t died or wanted to die either. From her perspective, what people like the princess and even Renzo himself had done wasn’t evolution. It was more like a revelation. People don’t change, she would tell Eilo and Ildaria later, over dinner, when the conversation had moved far away from the royal footnote. She believed people just uncover deeper truths about themselves, knowingly or unknowingly, and those became harder to conceal once they were exposed.
Have you felt that way before? she asked them. Exposed, like when you break your leg so hard the bone snaps right through your skin? They had. The conversation detoured to childhood misadventures, but Karolina had a point to make. She pulled them back. Some people get comfortable with that feeling and learn how to live in it. Other people, you know, they deny and lie and call it growth. That’s my opinion. I’ve seen it—artists are the worst for it, I swear. Artists who don’t want to be artists anymore? Worse than that.
Can I say you sound bitter? Ildaria laughed.
Now, Karolina threw her hands up. She exclaimed, joyful, That’s my truth, baby! I took too many bites of the world, and I’ve been disgusted by it ever since. Some people come out of their mamas malcontent.
Later that night, Eilo was exhausted, but Ildaria’s hand hovered over the light switch with uncertainty. She heaved a big, put-upon sigh, then asked, “Is it bad that I want to give Mencia Cipac a call?”
“Give her a call?” Eilo snorted. “Sure, Mencia Cipac, whose number you totally have, definitely won’t ignore your calls because she, for sure, knows who you are and has endless free time to spare.” He sat up straighter, then added, “No more overloading on projects. You promised. Besides, you don’t wanna poke that bear.”
“Not a bear,” Ildaria retorted. “A jaguar. Roar!”

Death Rattle Dazzle Plot EXPLAINED (not clickbait)
Other title ideas: So None of the Picwick Triplets Did It?, Theatre Professional Unravels the Plot of In-Universe Musical for No Reason.
This is a list of my thoughts about the plot of the in universe musical Death Rattle Dazzle from Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. This will contain no spoilers for the plot of the show proper, or the mystery, but will spoil all the songs written and theorize about their placement in an actual, two act musical. It'll also reference a few of the gags from the final episode, and this metafiction article by Playbill, which was done in collaboration with OMITB. Maxine's in universe review is bloody funny, and it contains a Playbill, which reveals some plot details about the original play. This practically is fan fiction, I will admit, but its fun, damn it, and I did my research!
Death Rattle Dazzle has the distinction of being the adaption of what is called a "classic play" by Oliver (who, despite his kookiness, is clearly well versed in theatre.) Maxine's review says that "Anyone with more culture than a vanilla yogurt has probably encountered the play in some form—if not by starring in it at the local elementary school, then in the form of a spoof on television, in film, or by Cate Blanchett opening the Tonys in 2012." This is hilarious, basically making the play a straight play version of Little Shop of Horrors. Everyone's done it, especially regional or amateur companies.*
*By amateur, I do not mean bad or unpolished. Many local, amateur companies put on fantastic plays. I simply mean the definition of amateur used in theatre: unpaid.
To me, that means Death Rattle must be old enough to be in the public domain, or was willed to be public domain after the playwright's death, et cetera. We also meet the original director of the play in 3.10, though all we know is that his version was "Weirder." This adaptation element mostly comes up in the aesthetic changes from straight play to musical, because we do not see much of the original play. However it's clear to me that Oliver knows his chops, and knows how to reference original material (keeping 'Creature of the Night' as Act One's opener to replace the opening monologue, for instance.)
Now, I want to write a mock up of the plot, and then justify my decisions. I also had the idea to name random songs to fill out a 12 song tracklist - pretty short for a 2 Act Play, but I'm just doing this part for fun. Maybe they're the songs on the cast album. Made up songs are going to marked in Red.
Players The Detective The Nanny The Constable The Godmother The Father The Boatman The Pickwick Triplets Chorus
Act One
The Detective introduces the audience to the situation at hand - a murder that is driving him to madness. (Creature of the Night) The plot follows the Detective as he and the Constable begin to try and unravel the crime. The Constable admits he has had trouble keeping law and order, thus calling in the Detective. (Private Dick) The Chorus has a song about their own suspicions, including wondering about the parentage of the children (Is It You?) The investigative duo, along with the Chorus, lay out the details of the crime, woman murdered, only her triplets in the room, found tossed from the cliff with a rattle down her throat. (Death Rattle, DAZZLE!) We see more into the mental state of the Detective, who clearly is manic about this case. They go to interview The Godmother, who tells them about her final day with her best friend, casting blame on the "Children's Father," then the Nanny (Last Light / Only Duty) This leads into the Nanny at the top of the lighthouse, closing out the act as she expresses her devotion to the triplets. (Look for the Light)
Act Two
The Chorus brings us back in, summarizing the events of Act One using crab mating as a metaphor (Entr'acte / Nova Scotia Nightfall) The Father is questioned by the Detective, who reveals he knows the children are not his own, because he had been sleeping with the Godmother, not his own wife. However, he could not have killed her, as he was at his post all night, and his wife was inside. (Private Dick Reprise) The Boatman, who had been lurking since the beginning, is finally cornered by the Constable, and reveals that he not only ferried someone over the night of the murder, but couldn't see their face. (Deadest Night) Then, the Boatman tells the Constable that he saw no one enter or leave the lighthouse, which is where the Mother was killed. This leads to the Constable realizing he may have to charge one of the Pickwick Triplets to restore order to his island. He locks himself in the lighthouse, and tries to solve the crime. (Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?) As the Detective enters with a copied key, the Constable realizes it must be he who murdered the Mother. The Detective admits this, though doesn't reveal why. (Confrontation, Dear Constable) The Nanny finds the Constable dead against the rocks, and challenges the Detective. He reveals that he is the father of the children, as well as confessing his guilt. The Nanny pushes him to his death, in order to protect herself. (For The Sake of a Child)
Okay, Justification Time.
The original play is described as "Agatha Christie" like, so casting suspicion on every character is basically a must. The actual placement of songs is based on how they were shown in the show, along with my own knowledge of theatre. Creature of the Night is a quintessential opening number: we start with our main character, before introducing every major character as they enter the stage. Look for the Light is a clear reference to Memory. A lullaby-like song to end the first act, the emotional core of the musical. Thus, similar to Cats, I structured the show to be mostly ensemble, framed by the two investigators. Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It? made me immediately think of plot twist patter songs ( ala Your Fault ) that come in at the 11th hour. And, of course, ending on that spoken For the Sake of a Child is the right level of dramatic.
While some of the plot in between the lines is inferred from the show, a lot of it comes from that metafiction article I mentioned - there's a Playbill with descriptions of the characters, and dear god, did it give me a goldmine of ideas. Seriously, I highly recommend that article. Marketing that's actually fun and engages the viewer in the show? Wow, who could've thunk it.
My original mock up included more people dying, but decided to cut that, since we have no evidence for that aside from the Nanny referring to the Detective "Serial Killing" which could have been about him killing the Constable, since we know he dies. If you want to know, they would've been: The Godmother murdered at the end of Act One, then the Father murdered in Private Dick Reprise, though not revealed until Confrontation, Dear Constable. BTW, that song is basically the only one with any basis in the show's script, as we hear a confrontation between the Detective and the Constable as cross talk near the end of 3.10.
Some scattered thoughts:
Both Private Dick and Only Duty are songs that I expect would have Ironic Echoes later in the show. Private Dick originally introducing the charming Detective in a mostly positive light, and then in the second act, used to insinuate that the Father knows the Detective used his, uh, private dick elsewhere. Only Duty, meanwhile, would be used by the Godmother to say that a Nanny's love is only because it's her paid duty, as opposed to the Mother or Godmother, and of course, later we have A nanny's only duty is to the children.
Finally, I had to include a reference that crab people breeding bit they couldn't drop in the show, lol. In my head it's a dream ballet during the entr'acte, each of the crabs wearing the character's they represent headpiece, and of course, three eggs.
EDIT: I can't believe I didn't mention this, but I believe the motive of the Detective to be a simple matter of custody; he wants the triplets, and got into a fight with the Mother when he tried to take them, leading to him murdering her. Then, he returns to the island when called by the Constable, and plans to either kill everyone in his way of getting the triplets, or to accuse someone other than him, to get out of trouble.

Tumblr media
The US and its propaganda arm, Hollywood, have always been anti-Asian. Although opportunities are opening up for Asian actors, the underlying messaging—that divides and hurts Asians—hasn't changed.
Not too long ago, AsAms seemed united in outrage against racism and white-washed casting such as Scarlet Johannsen in Ghost in the Shell, Tilda Swinton in Dr. Strange, or Netflix’s Deathnote. Yet as more projects with AAPI leads and casts were produced, this so-called unity proved to be a lie.
The illusion of AsAm unity fell apart with To All the Boys I Loved Before—which was widely celebrated despite its blatant white-worship. The most recent blow comes from Hulu's The Company You Keep, a U.S. remake of a k-drama that replaced the male love interest with a white man.
Tumblr media
Once it seemed like AAPI women were getting roles and being “humanized” (i.e. garnering attention and approval from white men on-screen and off) AAPI with media power were satisfied. It didn't matter that AAPI men were still erased and dehumanized—even in supposedly pro-AAPI projects.
Not only do AAPI with media power not care about the continuing harm against AAPI men, they exacerbate it. When AsAms critique anti-Asian narratives—especially ones erasing or targeting AsAm men like TATBILB—they're gaslit, harassed, censored and even permanently blacklisted.
Tumblr media
This is because AsAm media is held hostage by the racist framework of the U.S. government's 1942-43 Mixed Marriage Policy. White men's hierarchy—based on perceived threat levels and receptiveness to white assimilation—still dictates Hollywood narratives.
Research confirms that the MMP persists today. A 2015 study shows how gendered racism leads to severe under-representation of Asian men (and Black women). Whereas monoracial Asian men face significant barriers in dating, a 2014 study shows mixed-white Asians get a "bonus effect."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is why Hollywood execs know there will be less uproar if monoracial Asian men aren't represented—it's been the status quo for decades. In the few roles made for Asian men, they still fall into two categories: pathetic loser or toxic man/villain. In some cases, both.
The hatred and erasure of Asian men is so deeply embedded that it's led to the widespread erasure of AAPI men as victims of anti-Asian hate crimes in recorded stats and media narratives. AAPI journalists know this, yet continue to do nothing to correct it.
So what's next for AsAm representation? In 2022, Janet Yang became president of the Oscars. She's co-founder of Gold House—an AsAm Hollywood collective—and executive producer of Joy Luck Club, a seminal work bashing Asian men as irredeemable misogynists compared to "good" white men.
Many AsAms like Yang want more of Joy Luck Club and similar stories. Amy Tan, author of JLC, has been pushing for years for a sequel with the original cast. A TV series was optioned in 2017, and as of 2022 a movie sequel is to be written by white male screenwriter, Ron Bass.
Tumblr media
Stories like Joy Luck Club aren't just bad media—they're dangerous. Arthur Martunovich randomly hammered three AsAm men to death because he saw a movie depicting Chinese men as abusers and he wanted to "protect Chinese women". There's a high chance that movie was JLC.
Hollywood has figured out it’s easy to make anti-Asian films and stifle criticism by hiring Asian tokens to give stamps of approval. An article from 1986 (40 years ago) about AsAm criticism of racism in Big Trouble in Little China shows there's a history of sowing division among AAPI and using government resources to do it. I understand the allure of the Hollywood dream because I used to believe in it myself. From an early age, all marginalized groups—POC, women, LGBTQ+—are taught to fantasize about how we'll finally be accepted and heal the hurt once we get on a big stage and give an award speech. Having experience in Hollywood as a comic creator, I know how people in power (esp. white men) behave. Their goal is to wear you down until you internalize their bigoted messaging, regurgitate it yourself, and then thank them for it. They hate the word "no." Awards don't matter if the content that gets you there ultimately serves bigoted and harmful purposes. In 2020, I made a test for AAPI media. None of the projects so far have passed. That's by design. We think we’re holding the statue, but really, it’s holding us.
Tumblr media
Correction: I just noticed a typo in the comic. Inside the Hollywood sign's letter "Y" I meant to say "non-Asians" not "non-whites." Sorry, it was a lot of drawing and writing, and I got tired 🥴 (Please don’t repost or edit my art. Reblogs are always appreciated.)

Seeing as the PFL/Bellator rumors are being openly talked about by fighters involved with both promotions, guess it’s time to wildly speculate.
I’ve seen some positive sentiment around PFL’s rumored buying of Bellator MMA. A lot of it stemming from how Bellator has been run since the Viacom/Coker takeover. That’s 100% fair. Bellator went from a place that developed its own talent, to a side show, to a place talent the UFC didn’t want anymore went, and is only now enjoying an influx of homegrown talent (at a reduced rate tbh). The hiring of Big John on commentary is baffling, as he’s terrible at it. Viewership fell off the map as they moved off Spike/Paramount TV. Cards are full of slow grind fest or mismatches. So I get the idea of Bellator going away being a potential positive.
What I don’t get is the enthusiasm around PFL being the ones to buy them out. PFL has many of the same problems. Cards laden with mismatches because of their odd seasonal format necessitates highly paid talent advance out the first round. A bizarre desire to be a PPV company without any fighters who appeal to a casual audience. No promotional ability. Like, they can’t sell out the goddamn Hulu theater! I was in the Hulu Theater for Serrano-Cruz and Glory and both times they were packed. That’s how little name recognition PFL has, despite years on ESPN. That’s the other thing, their deal with ESPN is up soon. It wasn’t much but that was a significant amount of the actual revenue PFL generated. Outside of VC and Saudi money, PFL has been a fire pit for cash. They’re trying to expand to all these places: Europe, Africa, South America, the Middle East, etc. They’re paying $10 million+ for a Francis Ngannou fight in 2024. Where is all that money coming from? They don’t have a TV deal. They don’t sell PPVs. They barely move tickets. I doubt they’ve sold 100 PFL t-shirts.
Not to mention, PFL is the same organization who’s former matchmaker had to be quit because he was the ACTING MANAGER for many of the fighters on roster. Lord knows how much influence Ali Abdelaziz still has in the office.
I understand that Bellator and PFL needed to make changes. They could not both keep limping along pretending they were viable alternatives to the UFC. But all of a sudden, we’re going from three “big” North American promotions to two. That means fighters are going to lose their jobs. That means you have less options on what to watch. That means fighters’ (little) leverage at the bargaining table is being cut. It means that one of the biggest media companies in the world decided a secondary MMA promotion to the UFC was not a viable investment in a landscape where sports are the things drawing eyeballs to the TV.
Like I always say, I’m hoping for the best. But buying Bellator does not address the #1 issue facing any of these promoters - you have to draw people to the product. No one but us and a handful of other sickos watched Bellator religiously. They won’t care that PFL has Johnny Eblen on roster now. You have to build stars. Maybe instead of spending 8-9 figures to buy a company with like no name value, you buy Kayla Harrison or OAM a publicist?

Hi !
I would like to ask what do you think about may ? Bcs that scene in the office where she and tommy where talking and he got offended to the fact that she just wanted his horse was so funny to me 😂
If possibly could you do something like that with the reader? If not its ok i understand your busy with your life amd your fics!
I thought it was funny because Tommy’s not used to women who moved on from him, like May admits that she had hoped he'd be different (different being not stringing along three women at the same time and not be an asshole about it). Like he assumed May would be another Grace or Lizzie who never moved on from him because Tommy is used to having that power over women.
So here, a gender neutral reader who just wants to keep things professional after a fling with Tommy that they actually regrets ever having.
The quote from Voltaire is from Hulu's the Great Season 1 Episode 10, where Voltaire says it to Catherine. The last dialogue of the reader is paraphrased to fit the time and the speaker.
What is a man?
Gif by @floweryshell
Tumblr media
You hadn’t expected him to act offended when he saw he had no power over you.
He had a wife.
Elizabeth Shelby didn’t deserve to be cheated on, and knowing how miserable he makes her has broken the illusion.
“I’m just here for business. I will manage the cargo ships and your new shares of my petrol company and that will be it.” You had said when you showed up punctual as always.
You had long debated ending things, but you believed yourself in love with him for so long that you couldn’t bear the thought of leaving him in the past.
For fuck’s sake, you were thirty and had a spouse of your own who should’ve divorced you instead of forgiving you.
“So, it’s over then.” His tone says differently. You’ll come back, they always do.
Thomas Shelby had the uncanny ability to be wanted by all those who liked men. You were no different.
The only difference between you and his two wives is that you have the fucking common sense to move on and mean it.
Elizabeth Shelby deservers better than him.
Grace Shelby is lucky she died when he still loved her and his inability to remain monogamous hadn’t shown up yet.
“I know you still want me.” He says because that is how he makes them crawl back to him on their hands and knees.
“What is a man? Some legs, a cock, a few words that float away into nothing as they are said.” You said, reciting a quote some attribute to the French philosopher, Voltaire.
He had laughed when you said it then, he doesn’t laugh now.
“I’ll divorce Lizzy if that’s what you want. We are good together, Y/N, don’t throw that away.” He doesn’t beg or plead. Well, he does in bed, but when he is Thomas Shelby MP OBE he does not.
“For now, tomorrow you could get hit by a car, or you fuck another woman and catch syphilis frm her and French kiss it down my throat and I die mad and worthlessly.” You drink the gin he had served you. You don’t look at him.
It offends him to know how easy it was for you to move on.
It wasn’t your fault he was used to people like Grace and Elizabeth who were too weak to move on.

This is more of a rant towards more than just Nintendo, but I fucking hate this trend of subscriptions literally everywhere you go.
You already have Netflix, Hulu, Discovery Plus, HBO Max, and every other fucking channel under the sun trying to make people pay subscriptions to watch literally anything, and now you also have shit like Nintendo Online, Playstation Online, whatever other consoles, and even Clip Studio Paint now?? A program that was praised for not being greedy like Adobe?
And even if you pay these damn subscriptions, they might just randomly pull beloved stuff from their platforms just because they personally don't see its value anymore, like HBO Max with tons of original content, cartoons, and even most of Sesame Street, a program literally MADE to be public access (they also didn't tell any of the animators who worked on these cartoons that they were pulling them, btw).
This also goes for Nintendo with all its beloved games that they KNOW people wanna buy, but for some reason refuse to make available, so now a bunch of games are just gonna die with the 3DS and Wii U era and never be made available again. They'll just rot in whatever database or archive or whatever the fuck they keep these games in, instead of preserving these valuable pieces of media that brought people so much joy and paved the history of video game development.
I hope this trend of making everything a subscription fucking backfires on these companies and dies, because my God, it is so tiring having to pay all this money towards all these mediocre services when they offer the bare minimum, and constantly take away what gems they have that even made us care in the first place. I'm not kidding or exagerrating when I say that money hungry, capitalistic stuff like this is what ruins the art of video game development, animation, and just creation in general.
When you prioritize your profits, you lose so much that can't be replaced with cash.
And I really do feel like we need to take this stuff out of the hands of these corporations and into the hands of people who actually care, artistically driven people, people who appreciate the mediums all this content is being made from.

Moxy's Part of The Lost Boys Megathread
Tumblr media
From u/NeoGotMyBack
Moxy's part of the 127 documentary dropped a bomb on the fandom and everything is crazy. Mods are regulating all updates to this megathread instead of clogging the home page with a bunch of posts about the same thing.
now for my thoughts :)
For those of you who don't know 127's documentary, The Lost Boys, dropped on Disney+ and Hulu for international viewers. Instead of a look into Moxy's childhood like the rest of the members, we got a look into Moxy's early days with 127. Specifically, Moxy reflected on the seemingly many times she wanted to quit because she didn't mesh with the group well.
One of the biggest unanswered questions within the fandom is what changed with Moxy and 127 during Regular promotions. Moxy went from being silent to the normal side of her we see today. The boys went from not knowing anything about Moxy (In meme worthy fashion) to actively sharing bits about their lives with her as TMI's
I think most czennies wrote this off as Moxy not being comfortable on camera but we all knew that was a lie when Moxy started doing press for comebacks both during and after Regular. She may be quiet but we all know her comedic timing is impeccable. She doesn't indulge in skinship much on camera but she messes around with the boys in bts videos.
I can't speak for everyone but for me. I've forgiven Taeyong and the boys for what's happened. All of this went down years ago. The members are all cool with each other and I don't think its up to us to judge and critique their relationships now when we wouldn't do it for others. Like members fight all the time not just in NCT but in other idol groups too. We hear about these fights that go on and nobody bats and eye. Now its revealed that a girl and a boy in the same group got into a fight and everyone's up in arms debating about whose wrong and whose not.
anyways that's all i have to say about it. Lets try and be a bit more civil here than things are on twitter.
_________________________________________________________
u/It’sAllAboutFamily - I FUCKING KNEW IT!!!! I called this like two years ago. I always though the way Moxy reacted to 127 back in her early days is like night and day compared to now. Like my friend, whose also an nctzen, thought I was crazy when I pointed out Moxy asking Taeyong for permission to speak
u/captaincut - I KNEW I WASNT CRAZY!!! you're talking about weekly idol right??? u/It’sAllAboutFamily - YESS!! It's the limitess!era episode. one of the mc's asks Moxy what its like in an all boy group. Moxy turns slightly while starting to talk but if you look at Taeyong, he nods before she keeps going
u/BasicallyinLove - OG Moxy stan here and my heart hurts after watching Moxy's part of the doc. I don't think nctzen's understand how many iconic moments we would have lost if Moxy truly quit. The Superhuman stunt. The Favorite High Note. THE CHERRY BOMB RAP BATTLE!!!!
u/BlackWidowsWife - I'm sorry but SM is real bogus for not giving the boys a heads up about Moxy. Were they just supposed to be cool with the company throwing a random stranger into a group of boys who LITERALLY RAISED EACH OTHER!!!
u/Combebe - What I wanna know is who won the fight.....
u/SnowCapped - I guarantee it was Moxy. Her words can cut like a knife. u/UrAWizard - Go watch any compilations of Moxy silently judging 127 and try to convince yourself she didn't win
u/GottaCatchEmAll - Not to be that person but I always thought the group finally meshed during Regular promotions
u/HeHadItComing - I don't think its right to make people feel bad about being disappointed in what the ilichil's did back then. Their actions lead to Moxy wanting to quit two different times. Who knows how many more there could have been. It's great that everything worked out for the better but those emotions have a place in the space
u/TakeMeToDisney - I'm pointing all my anger at SM. Not the boys. Not Taeyong and especially not Moxy. Everything that Taeyong and Moxy have went through with this company before debut could have been avoided
u/HeighHo - Right!??!?! Like Moxy always said the day the boys found out about Limitless was the same day they found out about her, johnny and doyoung entering the group u/LikeAPhantom - Like I bet SM was hoping the boys would be distracted by Johnny and Doyoung that they wouldn't even say anything about Moxy
u/SailorMercury - It's crazy knowing this information and looking back at 127's content. The legendary 127 meme of the boys not knowing A THING about Moxy on Weekly Idol is real.
u/RosesAreWhite - Taeyong and Moxy's relationship is one of my favorites within NCT. He treats her with such love and kindness. At an extreme he babies her. Now he may be doing that cause he missed out on years of doting on one of the maknaes.
u/FeelMyRhythm - Imagine being so good that everyone considers you a shoo-in for Red Velvet.....and not wanting it
u/MyAToTheZ - I'm sorry to anyone this offends but Moxy was not fit for Red Velvet or Aespa u/TheWhiteLotus - Like Moxy has too much swag for either of those groups. In each one, she would have had to turn herself down u/SpiritUnleashed For once I agree with SM!! Moxy's talents would have been wasted in any other girl group. Like not saying this is a bad thing but SM would have had to let her go to another company. If I were them, I'd do ANYTHING to prevent that. u/GottaGetBack - For real!!! SM hit the jackpot with Moxy. Red Velvet reference intended
u/LumosNox - If you think about it the only one in the wrong is SM. At worst, Taeyong and Moxy got in a verbal fight. Par of the course for any other pair of idols. Its training and debuting, tensions run high all the time and that's bound to explode in some way. Other than that, both sides ignored each other until they couldn't anymore. SM was the one who plopped a girl in the middle of their freshly debuted boy group after ONE MINI ALBUM!! How else are those boys supposed to feel other than not good enough
u/LaLaLandMachine - Warning to any Tyongf's or COH's, A lot of anti's are using this information to start spreading hate. Its best to just ignore these people for now
u/CrawlingOnYourKnees - I'm looking back at videos from before Regular!era and I'm definatly seeing the change in interactions. Moxy would go from being super stiff and rigid around everyone to being relaxed when its just Doyoung and Johnny.
u/Aquamarine - It's sad that these memories will be tainted for me as a fan. It's hard to look back and know how bad things were for Moxy back then u/ShiningBright - Even watching the To Us videos of 2 Baddies. Things that were mentioned about Moxy make WAYYY more sense with context
_________________ Hours Later ____________________
u/LaLaLandMachine - GUYSSS!!! Moxy and Taeyong are doing a weverse live RIGHT NOW!!!
u/LumosNox - I will never forgive that manager who told Taeyong if NCT fails, it's his fault. Those words clearly traumatized him
u/SpiritUnleashed - "When you walked through the door I was confused. When they told us you were becoming a member.....I couldn't speak cause my heart was in my throat." "I felt like I failed." and what if I cry, then what??
u/RosesAreWhite - Quote from Taeyong "The nitpicking started because of me. I thought if you made a mistake they'd come and scold me. If I made sure you didn't make a mistake, they couldn't say anything. But I took it too far
u/HeighHo - Man when Taeyong said he felt like Juno was a second chance to do what he should have done for Moxy when she joined. I felt that. I proud that Taeyong sees and acknowledges he was wrong.
u/captaincut - Some people wouldn't even admit they were wrong. I'm never doubting Taeyong again
u/UrAWizard - Moxy and Taeyong saying our feelings are valid, your favs could never
u/SnowCapped - This felt real to me. Like this wasn't planned by the company. Moxy and Taeyong saw what was happening and addressed it so the group and czennies could move on because they're in a better place
u/HeHadItComing - Loved that Moxy comforts Taeyong while he was sharing his side of the story. It truly seems like they've talked this out a while ago and are finally ready to move on

What to watch during the ongoing WGA strike
As the WGA strike keeps going, put the pressure where it belongs: on big companies, not the writers working for better conditions.
While we wait for new content (after an equitable agreement), here are some lesser-known movies, along with the (US) streaming services where they can be found. Feel free to add on with a title, short description, and where it can be found!
(Television show version here!)
Films listed under the cut!
Tumblr media
Netflix:
The Gray Man (2022) - Rated R. A CIA spook known only as Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling) is assigned to kill a former Sierra member... only to find himself at the center of a conspiracy. At the same time, he becomes the target of a sadistic ex-CIA mercenary (Chris Evans).
Genre: Action/thriller. There are likely to be more Gray Man films coming in the near future, along with a television show based on Chris Evans's chillingly villainous Lloyd Hansen.
Rocky (1976) - Rated PG. Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) is a washed-up boxer who works as a Mafia enforcer. He gets an unexpected chance at glory when boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) wants to fight an unknown.
Genre: Drama/sports. If you don't know the story behind Rocky, it's almost as good as the movie itself!
The Imitation Game (2014) - Rated PG-13. The story of Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), particularly his work in World War II to decode Enigma transmissions intercepted from the Axis powers.
Genre: Biographical drama. The Imitation Game is the story of Alan Turing's life, both triumphs and tragedies. It contains themes of hidden homosexuality, cruel and unusual punishment, and suicide.
Max:
Triple Frontier (2019) - Rated R. An ex-Delta Force soldier (Oscar Isaac) asks his prior teammates to come on one final mission, with the promise of an incredible payout.
Genre: Action/adventure. Triple Frontier is a typical action/adventure movie with some interesting effects and a cast (Isaac, Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund) that elevates it a little further.
Parasite (2019) - Rated R. The Kim family struggles to make ends meet until Ki-woo is referred to tutor a rich teenager. Through manipulation and daring, the entire Kim family ends up employed by the unknowing Park family.
Genre: Black comedy/thriller. Full of fascinating dynamics and an interesting look at divisions of wealth in South Korea, it's clear to see why Parasite gained such acclaim.
Casablanca (1942) - Rated PG. Casablanca, Morocco is a popular departure point for people fleeing the Nazis. Jaded nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) must decide whether to risk his life to help his ex (Ingrid Bergman) and her husband escape.
Genre: Romance/drama. Casablanca is considered by many to be the greatest movie ever made. If you haven't seen it, try it. Keep an eye out for dry humor and the way the director uses shadows to keep the black and white film interesting!
Ex Machina (2014) - Rated R. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) wins an office lottery to help the company's CEO (Oscar Isaac) test his new AI (Alicia Vikander).
Genre: Sci-fi/psychological thriller. With incredible effects, a labyrinthine plot, and uncomfortable questions about what makes us human, it's easy to see why Ex Machina is considered one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade.
Hulu:
The Last Action Hero (1993) - Rated PG-13. Film fan Danny (Austin O'Brien) goes to see the latest in his favorite franchise, he finds himself pulled into the movie, working alongside his hero Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzeneggar).
Genre: Fantasy/action/satire. Think of every action trope you associate with Arnold Schwarzeneggar, mix it with a vibe like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and add some self-aware humor, and you have The Last Action Hero. This is not a popular film among internet aggregators, but I enjoyed it!
Palm Springs (2020) - Rated R. Reluctant maid of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti) is fascinated by a wedding guest (Andy Samberg) who seems to know more than he should. When she follows him from the wedding, she finds herself stuck with him in a time loop.
Genre: Sci-fi/rom-com. Though Palm Springs has some real COVID-19 quarantine vibes, the plot keeps it from feeling like a time capsule.
Whiplash (2014) - Rated R. Talented drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is identified for an elite jazz band by sadistic and manipulative conductor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons).
Genre: Drama. Though Whiplash is not a horror movie, it is partially produced by Blumhouse Productions. That darkness really shines through in Fletcher's abusive behavior.
Role Models (2008) - Rated R. After a disastrous, drunken day at work, Danny (Paul Rudd) is assigned community service in a big brother program. He is assigned to awkward teenager Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and accompanies him during his favorite activity: LARPing.
Genre: Humor. Though Role Models can get a little close to cringe comedy, it's got enough genuine humor and heart to get away with it... and even be a little sweet.
Amazon Prime:
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - Rated R. An author tells the story of Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the owner of a once-grand hotel in the former country of Zubrowka, using several frame stories.
Genre: Drama. Wes Anderson's films have a very characteristic style. The Grand Budapest Hotel features stunning sets, a ton of cameos, and enough quirky humor to keep you entertained!
Hot Fuzz (2007) - Rated R. London police officer Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is reassigned to the small town of Sandford. He's frustrated by the small town at first, but a string of murders make him suspect something more is going on...
Genre: Action/comedy. Hot Fuzz is the second installment of the Cornetto Trilogy. It is a satirical look at the cop film genre - and thus has a lot of overdramatic violence - but it manages to stand on its own at the same time.
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) - Rated PG. Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are two teens more interested in their band than their studies. But if they don't pass their history final, Ted will be sent to military school. A mysterious stranger gives them a time machine, sending them off to write the best essay of all time!
Genre: Comedy/sci-fi. If you're used to Keanu Reeves as a broody hero, you're in for a shock and a treat to see him at his surfer/stoner/slacker best!
The Iron Giant (1999) - Rated PG. In 1957, 9-year-old Hogarth Hughes finds a 50-foot tall robot in the woods. He befriends the giant and the two work to evade the government, who suspect it is an attack on the United States.
Genre: Family/adventure. The Iron Giant is one of the most recognizable and emotional animated films of the 1990s - extra impressive considering it's a Warner Bros film that came out in the middle of the Disney Renaissance!
Disney+
The Boondock Saints (1999) - Rated R. Irish Catholic brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) living in 1990s Boston are sick of the crime on the streets. They decide to take matters into their own hands.
Genre: Crime/drama. The Boondock Saints has low scores on almost every film aggregator site, but is widely considered a cult classic. (Edit: warnings for insensitive portrayal of homosexuality and transgenderism.)

The Reluctant Dragon (1941) - Rated G. Robert Benchley wants to sell a movie idea to Walt Disney. As he searches for Walt, he wanders through the studio and sees how many of the magical movie effects are done.
Genre: Family/fantasy. I'll admit, this film was included on purpose. Not because it's amazing (it's interesting at best), but because of the story behind it. The Reluctant Dragon was released three weeks after the majority of the animators went on strike. (And most of the "workers" in the film are actually actors, another sore spot.) Disney fired all of the strikers before eventually agreeing to let them unionize and rehiring those who wished to return. (You can read more about the strike here.)
