You people who think Steven should've killed the Diamonds, I just have one question for you:
How?
How? With what weapons? With what powers? With what army? How, exactly, could he have killed them?
Even if Steven wanted to, he couldn't have done it, he wasn't strong enough. He wasn't powerful enough. At least, not at the time of CYM.
This isn't like Avatar where Aang could've easily killed Osai if he'd wanted to, he was just some guy with really strong fire bending, he wasn't that difficult to kill.
The Diamonds were the biggest, strongest, most powerful things in the universe. How, exactly, was Steven supposed to kill them? Even if he wanted to, it wouldn't be possible for him.
He has powers and he's strong, but he's not strong enough. He's only 14. How is he supposed to kill them? He's short for a 14-year-old and those things are FUCKING HUGE.
What? With the Breaking Point? The Breaking Point's design is actually really flawed. You have to get super close to the other Gem to be able to kill them. It's not like a gun, where you can shoot from far away, you have to get super close or it doesn't work.
Little potato Steven wouldn't have been able to get close enough to any of the Diamonds to use the Breaking Point, they would've stomped on him.
Any way I try to slice it, there's no way Steven or any of the other good guys could've killed the Diamonds. They were too strong. They couldn't even poof them.
And I guarantee you. The same people who say Steven should've killed the Diamonds would probably have said "Deus Ex Machina" if Steven had suddenly found some great, powerful weapon or some insanely strong power up that would've allowed him to do the deed. You people are never satisfied. You always find something to complain about.
Also also, if Steven killed the Diamonds, then they wouldn't have been able to cure the Corrupted Gems and that would've been a crappy ending for fans of Jasper and Centipeedle.
So, if you have an enemy and you can't kill them (you literally, physically can NOT), you can't lock them up in prison, you can't even ignore them.... what's left? Talking. You have no choice but to use words. It's the only thing you have. Steven had no choice but to talk to them. He wasn't strong enough to do anything else. Talking was literally the only option.
Steven couldn't have killed them even if he had wanted to, he couldn't even poof them. None of the good guys could have done anything. They couldn't lock them up or punish them. It wasn't even an option. Talking was the only thing that had a sliver of a chance at working.
If Steven had tried to kill them, he'd be dead now.
If you want to argue he should've killed them, I need you to explain to me HOW.

So, yeah it's been four years since the Steven Universe ended. Also I've never fully got into the fandom, and idk if this had been pointed out, but I have a theory. It specifically about the Diamonds, and how each of them is responsible for creating/giving specifically aspects to every gem.
I'ma start with Pink Diamond, cause it has the most support. Pink is responsible for the gem's physical form. The biggest piece of evidence is all the corrupted gems on Earth. There was that beam from the other three Diamonds to end the war or earth, and what better wat than to essentially kill all the gems. So the Diamonds took away what they had provided for them to live (Mind, emotion, and modivation but I'll get into that later). Pink Diamond wasn't part of that, so all that was left is what she gave them. A physical form now better than a mindless monster. That's why Steven's healing powers could only work on physical wound and cracks to gems. It's also sorta fitting that the one to give them all physical forms would not only shape shift into an entirely different form to become Rose, but also give up her physical form to create Steven.
The Blue Diamond clearly gave all the gems their emotions. Whenever a gems gets close to her they're emotions match hers, or at least the expression of emotion dose. Would that not make sense to happen with her being the one to give them emotion in the first place.
Yellow Diamond I'm a little iffy about. I once thought she gave them their weapons, but like home world doesn't even really use them anymore. Instead I'm more so believing she gives them drive/modivation/passion. For this I'd like to point of Ruby and Sapphire. To start with Sapphire is blue, all blue, I'd like to think based on the color of the gem is how closely they serve said diamond. Anyway Sapphire dose have emotion, after all she falls in love with Ruby, but she dosent have much passion, not being made for fighting or close to Yellow in anyway. Unlike Ruby who are small little soldier under Yellow's army. "I'm a burning flame baby!" can't tell me that ain't passionate. It goes along with Blue and Yellow's gems being on opposite hands, as well as equal with eachother in the diamond symbol, they are two part of a whole. Emotion and modivate need eachother to function fully. The yellow is the one producing the knew tools and weapons what is progress if not the product of modivation.
White Diamond then gave the gems their minds, their power to think, to have seperatly identities. First obvious point is her gem is located in her head. Then the pink pearl wee meet in the series fanale, she is a litterally puppet of white, another body for white to use. She has no mind of her own, because White took it away.
The most ironic thing with this all is that what the other diamonds gave the gems is what would lead to rebellion and disobedience, not Pinks physical form.

I think Villain's Aren't Born (They're Made) by Peggy is an awesome song to pair with Rose Quartz
So most, as the viewers, don't view Rose as a full on evil character. She is more complex than that. However, Homeworld would because she is what flipped their society upside down and went against the rulers. I think the song works best when thinking of it as several conversations with different gems. Analysis below!
Tumblr media
"Watch the torch set aflame Watch it burn, watch it fade Watch the armies gather suit Someone's got to win and lose
They say my heart is almost black Well, baby, who's to blame for that? Who's to blame for?"
Okay so these first lines I think would be directed towards the diamonds. More Rose feeling confident and as though she is in the winning position. Here I think she'd be angry. The meaning behind the words really being "I am more than you thought" and "look at how you treated me before". As we know the diamonds underestimated her and hurt her. Despite if she put this on herself or not, she would hold resentment towards them and we see this in the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Count your blessings, count your minutes Played my game, hell now you're in it Bittersweet, my renegade And I'm anything but tame Grab your sword, you might just need it 'Cause I'm not afraid of cheating Oh, I hate to tell you this way But villains aren't born, darling, they're made"
These lines would most likely be directed towards Pearl. While Rose ended up with Greg, we know she had an important relationship with Pearl. Especially during the war as Pearl was a "knight" and dedicated to protecting Rose even if it meant hurting herself. The term "renegade" would match up with Pearl defecting to join Rose's cause. I think many first think of Rose when regarding that term but I think they probably would've considered each other renegades as they had an intimate relationship and affectionately called each other "my pearl" and "my diamond/rose". Grabbing the sword obviously would align with Pearl's advanced swordsmanship and training. Continuing, I think the reference of cheating works well with Pink Diamond's "death". All in all, these lines make it feel like Rose has accepted her position of villain in the diamonds eyes and realizes that Pearl (and others) would also be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Scream my name when they run Honestly, it's kinda fun Scream it louder when they fall I'm never satisfied at all
They take, they take until you give You taught me well, now watch me win Now watch me win" ...
"I aim before I kill If only for the thrill It's bad, I know, but still There's nothing left to lose Don't tell me it's not fair Believe me, I've been there I'd much rather be alone If I'm sitting on a, sitting on a, sitting on a throne"
These lines would more be inner reflection than talking with someone else. We know that Rose desires action, fun, etc. This would be referencing that and the feelings during the war. How fighting/killing affected her and how she never feels satisfied.

*this is just my interpretation and this specific song was not created for Rose Quartz or Steven Universe, I just thought it was interesting how well they worked together <3

sometimes i worry that *i'm* wrong and SU is bad/rushed/blah blah. then i remember whites fragile need to be perfect and ego defense of thinking she's fixing things. i remember how its perfectly mirrored by stevens need to fix others. how its both beautifully symbolic in CYM an made more explicit and heart-rending in future.
yeah that shit rules. white being reformed is great. its the ultimate rebuttal to the ideology that only good/useful/perfect people deserve to live- which is exactly the standard white held herself and everyone else to. it mirrors stevens arc of selfless heroism. it mirrors the toxic, insecure selflessness thats plagued everyone from pearl to jasper to rose about what it means to "deserve" to live it ties into "love like you" of how learning self-love is intertwined with loving others. it ties into how steven can't let go of his hero role until he's confronted by *literally* having his own mind in white's body, hating the idea of being like her yet ironically reacting exactly how she would - "this is someone bad for society, they should be shattered, this is what's best for everyone." trying to hurt her only hurting him. trying to help her helping all of gemkind - from the corrupted gems to dismantling a system that was held up by those exact ideals.
yeah no SU is fantastic. i'm so sad that its reputation is "oh well it wasn't that good, but it had some lgbt+ rep :)" which is just about the most condescending crap ever. i would gladly flip it. i think most cartoons that have come after SU haven't been that interesting, they've just been mostly generic stories with some lgbt+ rep.
