trying to teach myself emotional regulation after a lifetime of being taught (mostly through violence) that the only mature way to handle my emotions is to not feel them at all is i'll admit a little hysterical. every day i have to hold my own hand and go now are you going to be a big boy and acknowledge your feelings? it's okay if you don't acknowledge all of them but i need you to at least try alright? if you finish acknowledging your feelings we can go out for ice cream shakes later, how does that sound?

No idea if they would since they all live in a castle but how do you think the uknighted parents each would deal with empty nest syndrome?
AUDJSJSD NGL I’VE KINDA BEEN HOPING FOR A QUESTION LIKE THIS BC!! they DO. and they are NOT good at it. AT ALL.
ukd are very adamant on giving their kids the freedom they never had growing up, so as long as they’re managing their own duties they’re basically free to do whatever (though eugene can be a Little overprotective sometimes he means well). of course bc ilmari’s adopted and isn’t of any royal blood they end up being the first to leave the nest… i’ve already discussed that vaguely here, so this time i’m gonna talk more abt ryder!!
Tumblr media
being the eldest of the twins ryder is technically supposed to take on the throne to corona, and people have a LOT of high expectations from him, especially other nobles/those who were….less than pleased with rapunzel’s approach to ruling. he’s basically seen as the “light” of corona and has been held on a pedestal since he was very young, which leads him to repress himself and puts a lot of strain on his relationships for many years- especially with alina who’s often left in his shadow (and he doesn’t mind it per se!!! but he does feel like her life is pretty directionless, and she’s always been rather dependent on ryder bc of it).
all this to say, eventually on their 18th birthday everything boils over and leads to a nasty fight between the twins. they both kinda realize that they need to grow up and branch out in their own ways- and ryder in particular realizes that he rlly just needs to get Away for a while. so going to help edmund in the dark kingdom seems like a pretty good way to gain some new perspectives!!
after all the pressure she was under herself, rapunzel understands this more than anything…..but that doesn’t make it any easier for her (or cass and eugene, for that matter) to accept. :’3
Tumblr media
idk if any of you guys watched steven universe future, but i think they’d all be like this final scene like. ALMOST WORD FOR WORD LMFAO
in fact as soon as ryder even suggests the idea to rapunzel shes awkwardly slipping out of their painting session and running to cass and eugene in TEARS and they cry for a good 3 hours but obviously they want to be SUPPORTIVE and STRONG for their BOY!!! so they pull themselves together and when he brings it up again at dinner they’re like. “omg thats great!!! ^_^” and ryder is just like ?????????
and ryders almost a little hurt that they seem so unfazed so he tries to prod them like. Aren’t you guys upset. but they don’t budge. and so obviously right at the end as he’s saying goodbye to everyone and they’re STILL nonchalant abt it he just bursts into tears like “WHY AREN’T YOU GUYS SAD IM LEAVING :(“ and IMMEDIATELY the three of them all jsut run to him BAWLING
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ryder rlly enjoys his time in the dark kingdom actually. obviously edmund and the brotherhood have a Lot of flaws in their approach to ruling….but that’s not rlly what ryder needs anyways. i think they’re very goal oriented and focused on what they can do as a unit rather than what other people think of them, and that’s a lesson ryder definitely needs to learn. not to mention he brings a lot of color to the place (both in a literal and metaphorical sense).
Tumblr media
alina pretty much stays in corona tho…which her parents certainly aren’t complaining about. i think he really needs some time to stand up and take on more responsibility without ryder stepping in for him. the twins wont be taking on the thrones anytime soon, but i think when they do, they’ll end up switching- so ryder will be the king of the dark kingdom, and alina will take on the role as queen of corona. alina’s always had deeper ties to her kingdom than ryder did…not to his fault, but the pressure he’s had put on him just made it hard for him to focus on the things that Mattered, yk? he’s ended up being very stuck in his status, while alina has been a lot more down to earth and has always felt a closer connection to the public, if that makes sense… :3
but ryder and ilmari still visit all the time, and ilmari will take over the library one day too…like, raps, cass and eugene haven’t been Perfect parents by any means, but they’ve never failed to make sure their kids know just how strong, capable and loved they are. even though it hurts to see them go (and poor alina definitely has to deal with their theatrics and coddling for YEARS while her older siblings are gone), it’s very clear that no matter where they go, their kids will always know their home is with them, yk??? they love their parents so much and it just makes me so emo😭😭😭
additionally, i think uknighted dream kind of do some equivalent of fostering long after their own kiddos leave the nest… the three of them do a lot of community work, they have a lot of programs instilled for struggling families and kids alike. they end up helping pretty closely with a lot of the orphanages, not only with funding but also by putting in their own work. they visit a lot, come to tons of events…they end up forming a lot of bonds with the kids individually, or occasionally take them in when there isn’t anywhere else for them to go.
sometimes they know these kids for years, sometimes only for a few weeks…but they always try to stay in contact with them regardless. and even when that isn’t possible, they never forget about any of the kids they’ve met….so by the time they’re all old and grey, they basically have hundreds of pseudo-kids and grandkids all across the seven kingdoms, and in a way, their nest never really feels completely empty 🥹🫶

okay wait let’s talk about what made mike go from this
Tumblr media
to this
Tumblr media
his behavior changes drastically, and it wasn’t just because of that fight. there’s a reason mike is apologizing now, which he was unable to do in s3 after the fight that was a direct parallel of the rink-o-mania fight. mike can apologize this time. why??
let’s consider the nature of the apology — it’s practically a confession. he’s admitting that he was an asshole and he explains that he’s felt lost without will specifically. if the parallel is genuine, which it is, that means the reason mike couldn’t apologize in s3 is because it would’ve had to include a confession like this. he’d have to explain himself to will and why he said what he said, which would’ve meant explaining that he did want to play games with will for the rest of his life but felt he wasn’t allowed to. it would’ve meant explaining the “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” comment. he couldn’t do that then, but he can now. mike is comfortable making a confession now.
the fact that he’s comfortable enough to do such a thing, bearing himself open enough that will grabs the painting because even he could see that what mike said was important and not entirely platonic (maybe he wasn’t certain but if the love of your life looks you in the eye and says you’re different from all his other friends you’re gonna have a little hope) says that whatever had been preventing mike from confessing before is almost no longer an issue.
what changed? what blockades were removed from mike’s path to will? there were three big factors that played into it
1) mike hadn’t accepted himself before.
he was pushing the part of himself down that knows he’s gay, but between s3 and s4 mike had made huge progress in accepting himself, which we see reflected in him allowing himself to indulge in his puppy crush on eddie in ways he didn’t allow himself to do with will. I’m s3, mike kept very careful distance from will and averted his eyes when he realized he was staring. he often schooled his expressions around will too. he doesn’t do any of that with eddie!! he leans in, he stares unblinkingly, he smiles and we can see admiration in his expression. he lets himself be happy!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mike hasn’t accepted himself to the point of being out to people, but he’s accepted himself enough to feel those emotions and not want to push them away. he’s no longer repressing, just hiding (and not doing a very great job of it).
2) mike is scared of losing el.
in many ways, mike feels like he owes it to el to love her. when they initially reunite in s2, his reaction is platonic while she eventually moves in to try and kiss him. right before el died, mike had promised to take her to the Snowball. one of the first things we learn about mike’s belief system is that a promise us something you can never break, and while the phrasing is childish the way mike puts it into action isn’t. mike understands the implications of a promise he made as a kid before he really started to understand himself and he promised el a romantic relationship. this girl who sacrificed her life and saved his best friend, saved everyone, still wants romance from mike. how could he deny her that?? mike couldn’t just go back on his words and hurt her like that. it also helps that she came back right after he realized his own feelings towards will, something he wasn’t prepared to deal with. everyone was expecting him to be with el again, he felt like he owed el, and mike has this need to be exactly what other people expect of him and everyone had expected him to be the straight boy in s1. turning back on el means losing her and outing himself to everyone. he tries to fix himself for her sake and everyone else’s.
even after he’s accepted himself, he still makes an effort to be that straight boy. he doesn’t put up the intense act he used to back in hawkins, but around el? he’s trying to be exactly what he thinks she needs. he still owes her this, he still wants to be good enough for her to keep in her life. if the only thing mike is good for for el is being her boyfriend, that’s what he’ll do even if he hates it.
there’s something el does that makes mike no longer afraid of losing her because he doesn’t love her.
From, El
el told mike that she didn’t believe he loved her because he wouldn’t write it. the letter wasn’t a break up, but it was an admittance; el doesn’t love mike. not like that, at least. there was no formal parting but el isn’t just being petty here, she’s telling mike that she doesn’t love him. that’s only further confirmed by her not kissing him when they reunite and by her choice of words, “i missed you” in a talk that very close to being a break up talk. she doesn’t love him. mike is infamous for understanding coded conversations and using them rather than speaking like a normal human being, so of course he knows what el is saying with this. he isn’t stupid.
3) mike is unsure if will still feels the same.
yes, i do think mike once hoped will felt the same, maybe even knew. will reciprocating the want to play dnd and games together in mike’s basement for the rest of their lives only for us to see mike accept himself over the course of his isolation and playing dnd with hellfire isn’t a coincidence. mike was accepting his love for will while simultaneously accepting that he liked boys. it isn’t an accident that mike asked if will still wanted to play dnd with the party (a metaphor for mike and will’s relationship) and smiled like that before being forced back into a relationship with el he didn’t wanna be in. mike had hope at one point.
he loses that hope after going almost zero contact with will for six months, assuming will has moved on. the ‘painting for a girl’ definitely didn’t help his belief that will has moved past his feelings for mike.
however, there’s a scene that gives mike a little hope again!! it’s not a full confirmation, but mike is always prone to hoping for too much too quickly (he heard will’s voice on the radio and decided he was alive and they had to keep looking despite having seen his literal body. the boy hopes for the good things above all else).
the scene where mike and will talk in jonathan’s bedroom is that scene. honestly, this scene is actually really weird. not in terms of the supernatural but rather that the way mike is speaking and acting makes me think what he’s saying isn’t just about el. the fight he describes is adult, something he’s worried they can’t come back from. he says that he knows he could’ve said something that would’ve changed the outcome.
he’s speaking about el and he adds in small details about her being missing at the end of his rant, but for most of it? it could very well be describing his and will’s fight at rink-o-mania. in fact, it almost seems more likely that he’s using el as a cover again.
what he describes is applicable to his relationship with el but then why does he keep it so vague? what is he constantly looking at will, watching his reactions to what he’s saying? mike isn’t really giving will anything specific to react to beyond him and el having a fight they can’t come back from. he never tells will what it was he could’ve said. the intentional vagueness in his wording makes it seem like he’s fishing for something from will, not just seeking comfort from a friend.
the fight mike and will have was serious, more adult than their other fight. it’s no longer about dnd and games, it’s about their friendship as it currently, barely, stands. the fights were the same in meaning but they’re both much more direct with each other here. it’s no longer about ‘the party’ it’s about ‘us’. mike still speaks in code the way they both did last summer, using el as a front, but will doesn’t entertain it. he calls mike out for exactly what he’s doing and he makes it about them. no way to excuse it. their fight was more adult in the sense that they’re talking about their relationship as an isolated piece; it isn’t a piece of the party but its own entity.
mike goes and expresses the fear that this is a fight he and ‘el’ can’t come back from. he says the line while looking at will
Tumblr media
they’d fought over whether or not they were still even friends. they’d both come after each other for the lack of communication and never resolved it. of course he’s be worried about not being able to come back from that!!
mike always talks about saying “that thing” in order to fix the fight. in his fight with will, mike could’ve helped resolve it by telling will he tried to call but couldn’t get through. that would’ve revealed it was miscommunication the whole time! but he doesn’t. he doesn’t even suggest that there was a “thing” until after he gets the letter and thinks about From, El. mike barely engages with will after their fight at all until this moment.
will tells mike that it’ll be okay, that he just has to tell her when they find her. i don’t think will realizes mike is using code again, because he’s already moved on from it. if will was thinking about using code, the van scene probably would’ve gone very differently. he didn’t. the el-code is mike’s thing this season. where will is just being supportive, mike is given a glimpse of hope.
this scene ends with them being flirty with each other too!! they’re joking again, leaning towards each other, smiling. it’s something they haven’t done since that day in october.
maybe i’m reaching a little, but something in that scene gave mike enough hope to feel like he could edge towards a confession.
BASICALLY, mike is able to confess to will because he’s undergone some self acceptance, he knows el doesn’t love him and doesn’t have to worry about hurting her, and will unintentionally gave him hope through a potentially coded conversation and flirting. mike gives his confession while being the biggest flirt we’ve ever seen him be, and will reciprocated in kind again.
all of those components are explaining mike’s sudden change in behavior. when i say mike was actively pursuing will, this is what i mean.

Hi! I've been trying to educate myself on various aro and ace experiences and concepts, and I find your blog really helpful with that. However, I have a question about lovelessness that I wonder if you could help me with?
While reading a post about lovelessness that seemed influential (https://aroworlds.com/2019/07/16/i-am-not-voldemort-an-essay-on-love-and-amatonormativity/) I started thinking about families and the responsibilities of parents. I know someone (not aro or ace) who has struggled a lot in their adult life because their parents showed little emotion/tried to repress bad emotions to protect their children, and who never told their children that they loved them. This person feels unworthy of love today and has been going to therapy for years to try to manage it. Obviously it's very complicated and no one can know for certain where this person's issues stem from, but I was just curious to hear about a loveless person's opinion on this topic.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is, do you think loveless parents have a responsibility to show their children love / tell them that they are loved even if they (the parent) does not actually experience love?
Would be very grateful for a response and I hope this does not come across as rude 🙏
Well, I think, at least in my personal opinion, there's many ways to show affection to children beyond saying "love". The thing is, children learn what you teach them. If you teach them love as the final frontier, the wholeness of your care, and then take it from them, they'll notice its absence. So, you... don't base your child's worth on love! You base it on something else.
If you tell a child you care for them, you want the best for them, you are proud of them, etc. from an early age, they can still feel cared for without "love" needing to be said. You can show affection in a lot of ways! You just need to show your child those ways and establish early that you still care, even if you don't use the same language other parents might use. Kids can recognise when they were raised differently, so a parent should be ready to have conversations about why they're different from their peers. It can be a good way to introduce your child to the fact it's okay to be different than people around them, and that they don't need to be exactly like every other family.
The main holding point is the expectation that someone would teach their child that love is absolute and then refuse to give it to them; this just isn't realistic. Any loveless parent who wants healthy kids isn't going to enforce love normativity just to dissapoint their children by not being able to give it. How someone cares for their child varies, and it's a conversation you can have properly when they're old enough to understand. But, in the meantime, there's many, many ways to have a child feel safe and secure without saying "I love you". It's about building their confidence and support network, not establishing love as the most important thing in the world so you can tell your toddler they can't have it. THAT'S how you screw up a baby. When they're older and can understand more complex concepts, you can talk about the word "love" as a family and what it means to you and your child. It'll depend on each and every person what comes of that, but regardless, it's important to reaffirm love isn't necessary for that child to be an important part of your life.
They have an obligation to show their child they are wanted, they are welcome, they are safe with you, and they are cared for; this doesn't necessitate love. All it takes are dedicated parents willing to put in the work required for raising a baby, and make sure their child knows they mean the world to them without using the word "love".
[Plus, from personal experience as someone who did get told I was loved by my family? It didn't help me out. At all. Mostly because the word meant nothing when they did not back it up with anything. Love only means as much as you put into it.]

Not an ask per se, just a similar feeling. You’re someone whose Ninjago stuff, here and on YT, I’ve really enjoyed for at least a few years. And I’ve been similarly obsessed with the show for some time. But… it’s as you say — DR is objectively fine, objectively nice, but I don’t feel the same obsession about it and its characters, plot, etc that I used to feel all the time with Ninjago. And I *cannot* figure out why, and it’s also been driving me slightly up the wall. It’s maybe because I genuinely try to give media the best chance when I interact with it, but despite multiple DR rewatches I don’t see what everyone else sees. And the disconnect is a sad, like you mention — I joined the community here because I was so glad to have people who loved this show in the same ways I did, and now it’s like they’re all on a different wavelength and I want to be there but I’m not. It’s definitely strange for sure, made worse I think by the fact that DR isn’t like horrifically bad or anything, I just feel… okay, when watching it, and can’t even explain why.
I don’t know how much sense this makes, but I thought it might be something for you to think about if you’d like. I’ve been tossing around the idea that I don’t love DR because it is… good. It’s good, but too neat — if that makes sense? The new characters — I love them all, but their personalities and backstories and situations they’re put in all remind me of several other stories. The subplots of the episodes always have an end goal in mind, often an emotional realisation, and whilst that’s a neat way to tell stories, it doesn’t feel like, to me, the way Ninjago used to tell stories. Like, the first thing that comes to mind is Sora feeling hopeless and that episode with the djin where she realises that it’s important to hope. And maybe this isn’t a great comparison (as I’m typing it out, I realise that it isn’t the best example oof), but I immediately thought of Zane after Seabound, when he’d turned off his emotions. Sora’s bad feelings, whilst not as ‘significant’ as Zane’s in that context, began just before and were wrapped up neatly in that episode and not brought up again. Zane acts detached from the start of S16 if I remember, and it’s only near the end of the season (I think! I know that it’s a few eps at least) when he meets Sally, talks to her, learns a little about her life, and is able to come to the realisation that he shouldn’t be repressing everything. I think DR, because of the amount of characters it has, especially those that are new, and the amount of new worldbuilding, plot stuff, etc that they have to add in, it being a reboot/sequel type of thing, leaves less time for the nuance and time devoted to the character arcs in the original show. Or maybe I’m just crazy, honestly idk.
Something else that stands out to me is the fact that DR has to establish so much about these new characters and their world that they… they do something that old Ninjago didn’t do, and whilst it’s maybe objectivity a better storytelling choice, I think it’s part of the reason I’m not really feeling it. What they do is that they have the characters act kind of realistic. Arin worries about his parents, often. Sora did too. Wyldfyre and Kai definitely have a few moments where it’s implied that they’re confused about what’s up with their powers. In Ninjago up to s16, because they wrote a lot of it without intending much or anything to come after it, I feel like they thought less about this than the DR writers, who know that they’ve got a few seasons lined up, do. For example — hands of time is when we find out about Ray and Maya, but it was never often addressed by Nya and Kai. It’s brought up in s4, of course, but if they were real kids whose parents had vanished one day they’d probably bring it up more often, like Arin did. But it’s often not done in the narrative because the writers gave them other things to focus on, because they’re storytelling devices and not real kids. There was no real buildup to Nya being the water ninja, for example, but Sora’s said to be good with tech a few moments after we meet her. This ain’t a critique of either show — just a different choice I sort of picked up on, if it even makes any sense. And as crazy as it may sound, I liked that about the old Ninjago — it saw the characters more as storytelling devices, I think, than relatable to the audience (Kai was the hothead, Jay the humour, etc — ofc they were more than that, but they retained that sort of vibe from S1 a little all throughout the show I think). DR, on the other hand, seems to want their characters to be more relatable, more multifaceted, make more sense — which, when coupled with the fact that they’re new characters and that the ninjago fandom has historically thrived on gaps in the show to enjoy it (we’re a very AU, OC, heavy fandom, etc), I think DR attempting to flesh out their characters in the way that we’re often used to doing with the old characters in fic, art, etc means that I like DR a little less because there’s less to ‘work with’, and less that inspires thinking of the characters in different situations — bc whilst relating is nice, it is also enjoyable when the characters are written with some core characteristics in mind and you explore other parts of them or those characteristics in different contexts. I don’t think makes much sense, but I hope that it maybe gives you something to think about — as you can probably see, I’ve been going a little crazy over not liking it and not knowing why, so I know that the feeling isn’t great.
I'm picking up what you're putting down here. My next video has a bit about getting disillusioned with a fandom, and it sucks. It always does. It's heartbreaking when you feel like that special bond between you and your show was somehow broken. I empathies, and it's important to feel it out.
Now, I don't think ninjago was better at character arcs, i don't think having a character arc be longer is better, or even really a characteristic of classic ninjago, but I do think the DR character arcs feel very by the book. They're following the screenwriting 101 guide perfectly, but it ends up feeling a bit lacking because of it? If that makes sense? Now, ninjago was historically very bad at character arcs, but when they got it right, they always had a bit of a spin on things, and interesting visual payoff, whatever. I think the zane's emotions arc isn't particularly great (and the sally piece is sort of at the end of the first half of the season ;) I would argue sora's arc in season 1 about finding confidence is better, but that doesn't mean I find it much more enjoyable.
I will agree that that the characters in ninjago definitely feel more like characters, while the DR cast (old cast included) feel more like people. Neither are a bad thing, but I think it definitely has an effect on the tone. Characters allow for a more lighthearted goofy vibe, because the show isn't asking you to completely suspend your disbelief most of the time. DR on the other hand, does want a little more vulnerability from its audience on a regular basis.
Lastly, I do think you're onto something with DR being fully planned. The two seasons we have so far feel very indistinct. There is less of a defining singular "adventure" in each season. And again, that's not a good thing or a bad thing, but it ends up making things feel different. Ninjago is an episodic series of adventures. DR is a continual evolving set of circumstances. Those are just going to feel different.

also can u infodump about ur agents
hi i will but its kind of a lot. Putting a break on this cause its long
Alister's a chill but still serious guy. He used to play turf war and ranked a ton as a kid while also working as agent 3 for the new squidbeak splatoon. His parents are missing. Cuttlefish took care of him cause of that, kinda treated him like a grandson. He almost outranked callie and marie in terms of skill before he was partially sanitized. He's a bit bad at taking care of himself. The only medication he's willing to take is his antidepressants. He loves the squid sisters and has so much merch of them, mainly from his youth. He has no fashion sense and will walk out of the house in the worst outfit you've ever seen thinking he did ok. He renamed the nss to neo squidbeak splatoon when he was promoted to captain. He loves his boyfriend josh a lot, ignore the fact they tried to kill each other in their first encounter. They live together.
Zara is cheerful and seemingly confident. But she thinks of herself as a fraud and is worried about people finding that out. She's good at her job as agent 4 and more but she focuses on her mistakes a lot. She is really good at building and using computers and the like. Her laptop is enhanced by octarian technology, she has reverse-engineered it. She prefers making friends more than splatting enemies, but knows when she needs to stop being friendly. She used to have a celebrity crush on Pearl and Marina when she was young. It didn't stick but she still loves the two. She has worked with them and still does as a social media manager. She is a lot less involved in agent work than she was as a kid due to her job + being with her girlfriend but she still loves it.
Josh is really mysterious, but still very talkative and nice. He has a lot of repressed memories. He's glad he can't remember some of them. He used to be a trainee in the octarian military. The calamari inkantation changed his life. He used to be a lot more daring and reckless, but he'll never remember. He's agent 8 of the new squidbeak splatoon. Something's wrong with him, but he's okay. He has a special interest (inkling culture) that he studies a lot. He isn't the best at socializing sometimes. He's loved alister since the two were stuck in the deepsea metro. He likes wearing most clothing, except for things that are tight. He loves loose, baggy sweaters. It took him awhile to do agent work, but he's good at it. He still can't play turf war matches with pink and teal as the ink colors without feeling dread. Ink bombs scare him a little.
Orion is a bit of a loner. He was recruited as agent 7, by his own request mainly. He's an old friend of josh, though josh doesn't remember that much, and josh seems like a completely different person. He worked in the octarian military until the domes stabilized. He mainly did it for his family, who he still visits often, no matter how awful travelling conditions are. He values connections the most despite insisting on going on missions alone often. He has a bit of an ego due to his experience. It won't ever hurt him though. He wants to train the new agents, though they're hard to work with. He doesn't mind.
Violet is the most energetic of the group. They feel a lot of pressure being neo agent 3, they have a feeling captain alister did a lot as agent 3, from what they've heard. They were an orphan that learned to survive in the wilderness with their best friend, scope. They got help from another soon-to-be close friend, too, and want to repay them by secretly letting them explore alterna (that will definitely go well). They love alterna. They hate the fuzzy ooze. Theyve been partially infected by the fuzzy ooze, though this doesnt show too much. Mr. grizz considered them partially mammalian when the two first met. They hated that. They want to be a pro splatterscope player when theyre older. They love the z+f one in particular. They do aim drills with their friends. They love their friends dearly.
Scope is quite rowdy but still well meaning. He had gotten lost from his family while on a salmon run, and violet had found him. He couldn't have asked for a better friend. He doesn't know his original name, he feels bad about it, he wants to learn about his culture. He's agent 5 for the neo squidbeak splatoon. He helps out violet on missions. He was apart of a family of stingers, and strives to be one himself. He really wants to work with violet as snipers some day.
I have an agent 6 in the works, but ill talk about them later

Had an idea for an tsctir au where dungeons never happened, but the magic and mana within born s classes still lingers. The fact that theyre different and that people have skill aptitudes that affect their surroundings is still present, but no ones really aware of it (the born s classes Feel it but cant do anything about it)
So HYH is still Like That and HYJ still has the effects of the “caregiver” title, just- kinda watered down?
So the fic idea that i had that takes place in this au would be centered around the fact that HYH still has to deal with the feelings and things he feels in the manhwa/LN with his nature being (spoilers) that of a flame. He still wants to fight and grow stronger; he still wants to consume that which is precious to him (HYJ); he still gets unusually protective and jealous with HYJ.
And, HYH is getting increasingly frustrated cause he wants HYJ all for himself and cant explain why and, while his hyung is confused about it, he mostly indulges his dongsaeng but, because HYJ doesnt really understand what it is HYH needs to be happy, he keeps pushing HYH away and telling him to hit milestones that are relevant for human beings (like getting a spouse or getting a good job)
But all HYH really wants is to just be with HYJ and the conflict is centered around HYH not really understanding why hes Like That and trying to conform for HYJs sake and HYJ just wanting HYH to be happy and live a good life, but failing to really understand HYH enough to be okay with the actions HYH takes in order to live a happy and good life
Of course, the conflict within HYH would only get worse as HYJ continues to meet people and make connections and have less and less time to spend with HYH
And HYH cant help but feel guilty for being how he is cause his hyung is happy! Hes finally getting to live his life now that HYH can help with the finances! But HYH has to fight the urge to sabotage everything in order to have his hyung focus on him again cause he still wants his hyung to be happy
So hes simmering in frustration and self loathing and, because its hard for him to continuously keep getting brushed off by his hyung, he starts limiting contact because he Cant Take the small and fleeting interactions he has without feeling a sense of deep yearning for the way things used to be (just the two of them)
Maybe it reaches a boiling point for HYH when its his birthday or something?? And HYJ has a bunch of people over to celebrate with him and hed brought over a girl that he thought HYH would be interested in (and the icing on the cake is how everyones being touchy and HYHs already in a bad mood but now it’s worse) and all HYH had wanted for his birthday was for it to be just him and his hyung spending time together and now theres all these people and he, of course, acts cold and petulant and HYJ is like dude wth and HYH cant explain himself in a way that makes sense so he just storms out and leaves HYJ dealing with an awkward atmosphere but HYJ ultimately asks everyone to go and apologizes to them so that he can hang out with HYH and see whats going on
And thats where theyd start to re-assess their dynamic and try to understand each other better so they can co exist in a healthier way. HYJ would learn that HYH doesnt want a relationship or to be great or anything like that, he just wants to live comfortably with his hyung. And HYH would learn that he doesnt need to repress his nature and conform for HYJs sake cause what HYJ wanted all along was for HYH to be happy (and if that means theres a lot more hugs and quiet leisure time spent between the two just enjoying each other’s presence then so be it)
HYJ gets to go out and be the extroverted single dad he is and HYH gets to be the kid who gets doted on extra from HYJ
I imagine that HYH would be in college during this time and would probably be a doing some kind of fighting related martial art (taking out his frustration on his opponents a little too much during tournaments or something); hes gotta be at least a little violent and intimidating to be around cause its HYH; he may have been an angel around HYJ growing up but i like to think that he was the worst to deal with for any other person who had to deal with being in a position of authority over him; the most petulant child ever; never did enough to warrant his hyung getting notified (and if he did he was too intimidating to actually do anything against)

Hobbies I think the Black Sheep would have that don't seem to fit them but they do it anyway.
Lil Rose: Drums. I don't know why but I feel like it would fit them, all that repressed anger and built-up emotions could just be released freely without anyone batting an eye and it sounds good too. Probably got introduced to it by Kalim who invited them to try it and then they got hooked.
Also taking care of Lily is a big focus for them and so outside of drumming their main hobby is just being there for Lily and studying
Lil Lion: I've said this before but reading. The escapism is a hard reason here, I feel like this is the one thing that the Elders wouldn't have a problem with and it allows them to escape the reality that they're in.
Lil Octo: I've had some issues figuring out what they might do as a hobby but I ended up with writing, it's nothing serious they don't plan to post or publish it anywhere but they love the process of creating a world where people aren't so cruel as they are in real life. It's partially escapism on their part but they love doing it and they probably won't stop.
I can also imagine them becoming fond of cooking/baking, their mother owned a restaurant and so they probably had to learn how to cook to help out and ended up loving it. While they don't necessarily eat it themselves they like to watch people enjoy their food. I also imagine them wanting their brother to enjoy their cooking but being acutely aware of his own body issues and fears that he'll hate it or refuse it or maybe even get mad at them for offering it (they know he probably wouldn't do that however they can't help but worry).
Lil Scarab: they have many hobbies however the one that stands out for them the most is games, whether they be video games or board games. For their whole life, they've been 1 in 32 other children with no one paying any attention to them or defining them by their name, when they go online they are no longer (Name) Al-Asim, 1 of many children, but (Username) someone completely different that people like and have respect for outside of their family ties, and despite them being a jack of all trades being good at all but never mastering any one talent, games seem to be an exception. They aren't as chronically online as Idia but a good chunk of their time is online and they can easily master a game and complete it in record time if they set their mind to it.
In addition to that I love the thought that Little Scarab joining Board Game Club with Azul and Idia, however, the Black Sheep have other nicknames other than "Little *Nickname*" albeit they are more joking and they're used while they're just joking around and not really in any other situation. That being said, Imagine Asim going to visit Lil Ashengrotto for help with a group project and then afterward Ashengrotto walking Asim out only for Asim to turn around blow a kiss and say "Thanks for the help!" only for Ashengrotto to reply with "Of course baby girl, anytime!" and Azul just so happened to see the exchange (this isn't the first time this had happened), so one day in a club meeting just:
*playing a board game in a club meeting* Azul: "Asim, why does my little sibling call you 'Baby girl?'" Lil Scarab: "AHA HOW ABOUT WE STOP TALKING HAHA"
Lil Shoenheit: Aerial silks(and/or Ballet). Idk It just seems so them, so high in the air and seemingly so free only for them to be gripping the silks for dear life lest they fall and hurt not only themselves but also their image or the graceful dancing only for their feet to be in extreme pain and feeling as though they want to collapse but keep going in fear of the disappointment that they would be faced with if they did. If they did take these up I feel like they would notice the irony in this and find some amusement in it.
Lil Flame: Piano. I don't what it is but I look at them and think "yeah they look like the kid that would know piano" they don't play it often but it allows them to express themselves openly like if something gets to them or they're just not having a good day the chances are that once they get home they are b-lining to the piano there is no stopping them.
I got this idea from watching Corpse Bride with my friend I checked out halfway through because I was hungry but I did see the scene where Emily and Victor do a duet after something happened and it felt like they were both expressing how they felt to the other person via the piano with Emily's lower notes expressing her sadness while Victors higher notes expressing his eagerness to talk. That being said that totally caused a massive brain rot about the fact that I feel like if Lil Flame ever got into a relationship with someone I feel like that's how they would end tiny fights. Like they both were in the wrong and overreacted and after the fight, Lil Flame seemed to be overthinking it and just sat down at their piano and started playing, and then their S/O just coming up and joining them in a small duet sort of telling them that they want to talk it out in a calmer then they did before and make up with them and that just. FJDGSHFKSHDGFKH. Idk it makes my tiny little angst-filled heart melt.
[for reference]
Lil Dragon: I can imagine them getting into scrapbooking, it's for memory preserving much like Vanrouges is but a little closer than that, I can imagine them going to Yuu to get a copy of the pictures that they took of their friends so that way they can preserve it in a book and they do in fact show it proudly to the rest of the black sheep and sometimes even does it with them I can imagine them having little notes about what they were doing the day the picture was taken.
I can imagine one of the books they did getting ruined and they might have cried like they were close to wailing but it was okay because they remade it with the rest of the black sheep.
Lil Bat: ok I mainly did this for Vanrouge and Lil Rose because out of all of them those two are my favorites so far. I imagine them picking up painting like they visit so many places (this was before the camera was invented in twisted wonderland). They have no way of preserving the memories and so they picked up painting to allow them to hold onto them. They probably started as a child and then lost interest before picking it up again as an adult. They don't sell anything it's purely for their eyes only (maybe their families and the servants that clean their room can admire them no touching though). Even after the camera is invented they still paint as it feels more intimate and they enjoy the process of it all I can also see them getting into photography but still paints mainly.
I will do more of these however it is currently late at night and I am tired so that will have to wait I'm sorry that this is so long
-the random roach in your inbox aka ARandomeRoacher
aaaaaa okay okay okay so! i have inspiration part 129342 anyway
i love how some of the hobbies are so obscure compared to the lil sheep?? like lil rosehearts playing the drums???? just imagine lil baby rosehearts going at it on the drums.
i also like the idea of lil asim being into games? escapism :D and then bonding with azul and idia because of board game club :OO
i do have an idea for shroud!(name) but i guess it would be less of a hobby? idk just wanted to say that they'll have their own specialty if that makes sense? like idia is really really good with tech to make a body for ortho and (name) will have... something :)
but as for them playing the piano, i know the scene you're talking about! i love love corpse bride and just thinking about them playing emily's part because they're so used to just being quiet because of how their parents treated them is mwah.
and scrapbooking!!! for lil draconia!!!! yes yes yes because they can immortalize memories when the people in them pass away :OOO
also also vanrouge just painting on their travels!!! oogh a bit of a n idea but imagine they send the painting back home, either to show their brother where they are (if they're on good terms) or to give hints on where to find them (if we're doing the disappeared sibling hc)

Can I also have breakup exes HC thing with sebek, floyd, leona and malleus?
Tumblr media
hi anon!! my friend lyza requested for malleus ex head canons so you can check that out for him. i answered for floyd, leona, and sebek in this post.
SEBEK ZIGVOLT
sebek honestly doesn’t understand how to handle a breakup. it’s something completely foreign to him and he thought it was only for humans to experience.
his first instinct is to not tell malleus or anyone for that matter. such an event is probably disgraceful and embarrassing. a break up? even though you were on amicable terms? it still proved that he was an inadequate partner and that’s the most frustrating thing for sebek.
when lilia learns of this, he tries to comfort sebek. sebek doesnt deny the fact that you guys broke up but he insists that he’s okay. he’s not in emotional distress or anything which lilia finds highly unlikely.
sebek is all about emotional repression. he wrapped all the emotions up in a little box then shoved it into the closet. how is he supposed to keep watch over malleus while being emotional?
in the long run it prevents him from moving on. he struggles with moving on because he hasn’t confronted nor felt his emotions. and it eventually becomes a detriment to his relationship with you.
he’s a walking disaster.
LEONA KINGSCHOLAR
leona’s never leaving his room. he keeps himself locked up where not even ruggie can get in. furthermore, he rarely leaves his bed. it’s very hard for him to get up out when all he can feel is the weight of his sadness.
ruggie has to have jack break into leona’s room so they can drag him out by his ankles from his bed. leona is his normal grumpy self when it happens but the air has a hint of sadness to it that just seems unfamiliar.
this is also one of the times where he actively goes out of his way to spend time with his nephew. cheka provides him a well needed distraction plus he’s a child who doesn’t notice the heavy cloud of depression weighing over his uncle’s head.
it’s kind of cute actually with how cheka cheers up his uncle. it’s just simple babysitting things but the kid keeps him up and out of bed which is entirely necessary.
the next time you see leona, he looks quite disheveled. to be fair, he hasn’t left the bed in a while. but it’s progress. he’s slowly learning how to manage the depressive episodes post-breakup one episode at a time.
ruggie wishes there was an easy cure for leona.
FLOYD LEECH
a lot of people say that floyd’s mood swings are already bad enough without any stress. that’s how he is naturally. so imagine adding a stressful breakup on top of it.
you guys broke up because of floyd’s mood swings. you couldn’t keep up and it was draining. endless energy, constantly flipping back and forth. you were not having the instability. and it only caused the mood swings to become more unstable and a lot more frequent.
floyd’s angry. he’s a lot more irritable than he normally is and his moods easily devolve into anger. he threatens people a lot more but especially the first years. so they’ve learned to do what floyd says to avoid getting the life squeezed out of them.
floyd’s hurting a lot on the inside. but he doesn’t cry sad tears. instead his tears are angry. there have been few occasions where people have witnessed the angry tears during his mood swings. but usually the tears are reserved for jade and azul only.
floyd is a lot different from his brother’s reaction and it’s up to jade to keep a look out on the more, clearly, emotionally unstable leech brother. you’re lucky you haven’t witnessed any of it.
squeezing things is a lot easier than processing after all.

What are your thoughts on the Amphibia fandom complaint's about S3? For me, it felt like people complained about the stuff I had no issue with but ignored or praised the things I did have a problem with.
I'm curious to hear what u personally thought were s3's issues; feel free to lmk that!! as far as my own opinion goes:
I'm really not picky w Amphibia's writing. I've always loved it and that did not change when s3 aired. the major thing I saw most people complaining abt was Anne's seeming indifference in s3a to the situation regarding her friends; I really never thought this to be bad writing imo. we had two seasons of the show to learn how Anne deals w all of her emotional issues: she represses and ignores them. idk why people expected Amphibia to suddenly become this depressing show after True Colors, bc 1) Disney wouldn't have let them (their younger audience wouldn't have found it engaging) and 2) that's never been Amphibia's style anyway. I think there were well-developed and subtle signs that Anne was struggling throughout the season (see: the entire museum episode and also that little outburst Anne had at Sasha during Sasha's Angels), and not to mention the kid had Andrias's robots and the literal FBI after her during all of s3a??? idk, speaking as someone who compartmentalizes all his problems, I think it's def realistic that Anne wasn't having visible breakdowns. so yeah, I didn't and still don't vibe w the complaint that s3 is too cheerful in this sense.
another major complaint I've heard: not enough Marcy. which is so laughable that that's a complaint in the first place. this isn't the Marcy Wu show, this is the Anne Boonchuy show. sure, I would've loved to see more of Darcy, but I'm also v aware that the crew ran out of time for a lot of things and I'm willing to give them some leeway in that sense. s2 really ruined the fandom's perception of the show from what I can see, bc as soon as Marcy was introduced, it was like no other character could be as important as them. I see very little gripe abt how little we see Sasha in s2 and it's practically just Marcy and Anne, but the second we have smth like s3 where Marcy is barely there and it's practically just Anne (and then Sasha), it's a major problem for some reason. it's dumb. s3 was perfectly fine as far as how much Marcy showed up. again, this isn't their show.
final complaint I can think of (which I again disagree with) is how Amphibia ended. I do seriously wonder sometimes if I watched the same show the rest of this fandom did. the entire damn theme of the show is change. did people somehow expect the trio to NOT drift apart? or even for them to be able to return to Amphibia? look, I get it, Amphibia's ending is bittersweet and it hurts, but then again, doesn't life hurt like a bitch sometimes? this is literally inevitable. Amphibia's message is all about change and being made better through the connections you've made and the people you hold close, EVEN if you have to leave those people physically. the point is that love is strong enough to persist without that constant face-to-face connection, and we get an example of that w the future trio reunion ("you'd be surprised what makes its way back to you"). sometimes shit sucks, but you just keep moving forward and you keep hoping. you keep loving. Amphibia is insanely good at representing REALISTIC emotional scenarios, despite the grandiosity of its plot. this is why I love the show so much. you don't have to like the finale, but to say that it's bad writing is just. missing the point.
other than that, I can't really think of the other major things I've seen people say abt s3. I am a s3 defender no matter what. I love Amphibby that's my final statement🫶🫶

i feel like mateo doesnt get enough love in this blog so im asking for mateo in the oc emoji asks!
🙈💧❤️📎
You're absolutely right anon, we ain't getting much Mateo Alcantara love in this blog >:(( But it's understandable since the triplets have everyone's heart in a chokehold HAHAHAHAHA
Also Mateo is super proud of his little grandkids getting all the attention because he's just a sucker for them.
holy shit anon you're going for Mateo's neck on the first few emoji asks oh lord HAHAHAHAHAHA
🙈 - What's a side of your OC that they don't want to show other people?
Oh boy, Mateo doesn't want anyone to see how short of a temper he has. Contrary to what you might believe, Mateo has a really short fuse. That guy can sucker punch a dude with only one working arm just because someone would look at him funny, but he learned to control his temper because he doesn't want Evalina to see such an ugly side of him. His late mother always told him that his outbursts were similar to his father (who we know is an abusive bitch to both him and his mama) and that really gave him a slap in the face.
When he met Pedro for the first time when they were like ten or twelve, he learned to be more patient and compassionate. Pedro balances Mateo out like a charm, and his goofy tendencies led to Mateo learning restraint. When Alma came into the picture, Mateo's anger issues were lessened as well since that woman can give him a scolding of his life and he can't do anything about it because Pedro, who's like a brother to him, is smitten with this woman who likes to hit him with a chancla.
He learned to be more mellow and more accepting with what he has in life when Alejandra came into the picture. He doesn't want her to see his flaws while he was courting her, so Pedro made sure to teach him everything he needs to know to romance a gal (and that included him NOT going into bursts of impatient rage). But Alejandra still accepts him no matter what his little mood swings <3 He vowed to never hurt Eva like his father hurt him, so that also contributed to him repressing his anger prone side.
💧 - Random angst headcanon
Mateo would often go weeks without sleep as punishment for himself for not protecting Pedro when they ran away from their pursuers. He always blamed himself for how Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno grew up to be fatherless.
❤️ - Their love language(s)?
Definitely Quality Time and Words of Affirmation. Mateo never got any good quality time with his parents as a kid, so whenever someone (aka Alejandra) makes it a habit to dedicate a significant portion of their day for him, he'd be over the moon. He never really knew that he had Words of Affirmation as a love language, but when Alejandra started trying her best to write him little poems and written love letters (which she is terrible at, by the way), he'd cherish them like it was the most precious thing in the world.
📎 - a random fact.
Mateo likes to read...questionable literature. It's very well written, it's good, and it's literature...but it's questionable cough aka he likes to read erotica cough

Grey's Anatomy: Stronger Than Hate (18x18)
Ah, a classic dinner party episode of Grey's Anatomy. I love the gentle chaos.
Cons:
A full episode built around the premise of "everyone getting to know Nick" is bound to be irritating to me, because Nick is still the boringest boring to me. Like he's helping out with the cooking and cleaning, which is meant to be charming, but just seems bland. He talks to Maggie about his own difficulties with a sibling who is troubled and takes advantage, and that's meant to teach Maggie something about Winston's struggles with his brother. But instead I'm just thinking I'd rather spend that time with Winston, exploring how he's feeling about all this. When Amelia is talking to Nick about Kai, and about Meredith possibly leaving, I was struck by the contrast between all of Meredith's interesting friends and family in Seattle, and the boring guy she might be leaving them all behind for. I don't want to feel this way. This show has gotten me to appreciate and admire so many new characters over the years, but Nick is still not clicking with me at all.
There were some tonal problems with this episode that stopped it from being one of the more iconic Grey's episodes... I like the big group scenes where we see the characters hanging out socially, but we kept cutting from that, over to the hospital where we were dealing with a) Richard learning to accept that Catherine might be dying, and b) a hate crime against an Asian woman, and the Asian staff at the hospital responding to it. So the tonal stuff there was a bit odd to me.
And okay, here's the thing about the hate crime plot thread. I think a lot about it worked really well, but at the same time there was this awkwardness to having a bunch of AAPI characters at the hospital who we don't really know suddenly having speaking lines just to react to this travesty. Nico is the only actual character we could connect to on this, so it kind of put into sharp relief that the show could use more actual representation in that area.
Pros:
I can't believe I have to keep putting Owen Hunt, one of my least favorite characters on any show ever, into the "pros" sections of these reviews! But I loved his conversation with Kai. I liked watching him be happy with Teddy, have a drama-free evening, talk about his kids and Amelia and her role in his life. It's almost like he's not 100% insufferable when he's not being an angst-machine. Who knew?
But speaking of angst, we see that Amelia and Kai are doing really well, but when Kai sees Amelia in her element as a mother to Scout, and an aunt to Meredith's kids as well, they realize that they might need to reconsider the relationship. Kai doesn't want to have kids, and they're never going to change their mind on that. We leave things lingering, uncertain what that means for Kai and Amelia's future, but let's just say it doesn't look good. I'm a little bummed about this, but it's also very understandable, and I like that it's being explored realistically.
Back at the hospital, I will say I found the stuff with Nico very moving. He's such an emotionally repressed character, we know that about him, it's been such a point of conflict in his romantic life. And he quietly and calmly treats the patient without showing outward signs of distress, even as some of his colleagues talk about the horror of their lived experience. Then, we see Schmitt going to check on him, and he's punched a hole in the wall. His knuckles are bruised and bloody. I loved Levi coming back into the room with an ice pack for the injury. He doesn't say anything, doesn't push Nico to talk about it, just does the practical thing that can help in the moment. That was such a strong scene, as brief and simple as it was. I really do like Levi as a character, and I want to know Nico better. I want them to find a way to be happy, whether that's together or apart!
I'm always impatient with Catherine story-lines, because I find her irritating, but I will admit I liked the stuff with her and Richard here. Very tender and sad. Richard has outlived two women in his life who he loved dearly, Adele and Ellis, and the thought that he might have to do it again is such a tragedy. But Catherine needs to be able to relax and live and laugh a bit, even as she continues to fight for her life, and I like that our patient from last week helped to teach Richard that. Just cute vibes all around, even considering the inherent tragedy of the situation.
And then you've got Wendell, Winston's brother, conning Maggie and Winston out of $20,000. Wow. Yikes. I truly didn't see that coming. I appreciate getting to explore Maggie's marriage a bit, seeing how they deal with this situation. They seem to really love each other, but one consequence of them getting serious and getting married so quickly is that there are so many things they don't know about each other. This is a trial for their marriage that I think they've been handling admirably so far. I'm definitely invested in seeing where it goes.
Next week is the finale! Looks like we get to see Jackson and April, which I'm really excited about. Also looks like we might get answers about the residency program at last. Dun dun dun...
8/10

Rest in peace, Toriyama.
My heart hurts. It legit hurts so much that I feel there is a hole somewhere between my abdomen and chest. I don't even know why I'm typing this.
Dragon ball and DBZ were what made kid me's day a little more bearable. As someone who did not have a very good childhood, I still revisit the feeling of rushing home to catch an episode of dragon ball. It's one of the few memories I have not repressed and puts a smile on my face when I remember the feeling of being on time to catch the OP.
I was bullied as a kid and had no friends but I did not mind that as I had to watch an episode of DB/DBZ at home so what did it matter if the girls in my class did not invite me to play with them after school? I had better things to do and to be very honest, I would have declined anything if it meant I was gonna miss an episode even if I could catch the same episode at night (which I did daily despite watching the same episode in the afternoon).
I know there are many like me who watched Goku and his friends get up and work on themselves with a smile on their face even when everything was against them and it gave them hope that maybe tomorrow would be kinder and even if it were not, we could learn something and be a little more resilient.
Watching the gang reunite after the time gap made me wish I had friends like that. That even if things changed somethings would not.
When I developed an ED in fourth grade, I could not eat without my brain turning against me. My appetite was dead and my mum would force a bowl of food on me after school. It would take me a long time to eat even a scoop of rice but I'd always put on DBZ and take small bites as the episode progressed. This became a ritual and I'd manage to eat lunch and dinner while watching DBZ.
Even though I've grown up and a lot of things have changed, dragon ball is something I still cherish so much. It is 'the' medium in my life which has been a constant companion. When I'm feeling down I'd put the OP or an episode or read a couple of chapters from the manga and I'd feel a bit better. I don't know how to frame this is words but I'm so thankful for dragon ball existing in the same world as me and at the same time because it really helped me a lot and made every day a bit easier for a five year old me.
I never thought Toriyama would die to be very honest. I know it sounds ridiculous but to me he was so much bigger than someone who could just die. I don't know if I am making any sense here but he was a larger than life figure. Someone beyond mortality. Now, I understand how ridiculous that thought process was.
I've never been into celebrity culture or care about these things so I'm surprised how hard I'm taking this.
I hope Toriyama knew how much his work meant and impacted a lot of people's life in a positive way. That no matter the criticism and sometimes hate, the world and characters he created resonated with so many of us. The world of dragon ball made me feel as if anything and everything was possible. Magic and science co existing together like that was nothing short of breathtaking and I loved and still love every minute of it even if sometimes some scenes would stretch on for days.
I've been pumped for diama and I still look forward to it but things will not be the same anymore. Rest in peace, Toriyama. We will miss you a lot.

[meta] What are your muses closest relationships, good and bad. And how do they define who your muse was, is, and will become?
I put it under a read more for length! I’ll be discussing sibling death and domestic and emotional abuse. The passages will be marked, but please be careful if you want to read!
Solomon: [domestic abuse tw] I think Solomon was the first fae Virgil met when he came to white crest! They had this beautiful meeting where they just talked about each other and talked about being sort of isolated and compared their experiences of being fae. He just loves to listen to the Leshy talk okay. It boggles his mind when Solomon tells him stories of places his country ass has never heard of. Solomon is also one of very few people who he feels like he can be vulnerable with. Solomon also never seems to be afraid of him or his spook factor which is a huge bonus.
Virgil can come across as overprotective of Solomon, but it’s honestly just because he’s the first real connection that Virgil has made out from under his mother’s thumb, and he wants so badly for things to go right with him. Like she used to kill anything she saw him get too attached to, and now he’s terrified that Solomon will die if he lets anyone (even Solomon) know how much he cares. And Solomon did die, which sort of proved his point. So he’s just trying to keep his leshy safe, because if Solomon gets hurt he takes it as a personal failure. He’s trying very hard to keep Solomon separate from his past in the Mirror.
Nothing makes you confront your repressed feelings like a demon referring to your “dear friend” as a lover to be sacrificed! Things are not chill!
Milo: Virgil’s first friend/kidnap victim! Milo and Virgil were so different they were just constantly being like ?? about each other. But they’re very soft. Virgil has based his (very limited) understanding of human culture on what Milo has told him. Each one secretly thinks the other is a pitiful blorbo.
Nassus: [sibling death and domestic abuse tw] Virgil’s dead older brother/the person who raised him! Nassus was like the only good thing about life in the Mirror. He just had a way of making it seem like a game when they were running from Myrrha, or hiding, or sneaking out of the house to stay in the woods, or with their neighbors for a few days. He was sort of the buffer between Virgil and their mother. He also had a way of just standing his ground when she tried shit that she’d just lose interest in him and walk away. Virgil didn’t realize how fucking scary she could be until Nassus left. The guy got suckered into hunting for humans in White Crest, and he had to leave Virgil alone with Myrrha. Virgil learned very fast that she wasn’t actually messing around, or playing games. Virgil was already suffering a lot when Nassus left him alone, but it was Nassus’ death that really pushed him over the edge. One of their spellcasters burned the both of them alive. So Virgil lost both his anchor and the trust he had in the humans he kept when Nassus died.
But Nassus is still following his little bro as a ghost so yeah. He’s not leaving him completely alone, even if it feels that way to Virgil. He can’t really talk because he’s too burnt, but he’s watching. He’s going to follow Virgil until he seems happy (which could take a very very long time)
Horan: [domestic and emotional abuse tw] Virgil’s dad. Dead. Pretty much a shitty, neglectful father who said and did some horrible shit. Very encouraging to Myrrha, and found her antics funny. But he never actually hit his kids, which is something. Killed by wardens.
Myrrha: [domestic and emotional abuse tw] Virgil’s mom! Oh man did Myrrha fuck him up. Like she was constantly hunting/biting/""fake"" trying to kill him whenever she saw him. She killed the humans he got overly attached to and left them for him to find. She also really went in on him if he cried or flinched (and she’s like 8′9 without her horns so not really someone his childhood self ever thought to fight back against). She used to call him overemotional/ a walking bruise/etc, thought of him as soft because he wasn’t like her, and called him a whole lot of bad things for trying to take care of the humans instead of just leaving them to rot in their cages.
So he's just like real traumatized at this point. He can't really sleep because he thinks she’s coming into his room to kill him, he needs to be silent and hidden at all times, he's constantly afraid that people are going to snap and hurt him. At the same time, he's masking and repressing everything he feels so hard. Like he thinks that if he genuinely shows how he feels someone is going to hit him (or at least hate him forever). Every time he cries it’s like a mini breakdown because he just can’t hide it anymore.
Like he knows that his white crest friends love him and he vaguely knows that it’s normal to like.... let down your walls and be vulnerable with people you trust. But at this point he doesn’t even know how to begin to do that, and it feels like something that’d just emotionally exhaust them anyways so he just keeps a bit distant. He also hates to feel weak in front of people he cares about (even though he is! he’s constantly on the verge of fainting because of white crest being upside down to him. but he’s also just a very soft boy and that’s okay!). And sometimes he just genuinely doesn’t realize that it’s not normal to have your parents try to kill you and feed you to a demon.
This boy needs therapy bad dsflkj

Fine I'll bite I'm doing Encanto headcanons. this is centered on Mirabel and her parents and siblings (bare with me there's a lot)
Mirabel has full conversations with Casita. Everybody has walked in on her talking to the floors at least once (basically canon tbh)
Agustín sometimes just doesn't notice that he's gotten hurt because it happens so often. Someone will start a conversation and then point out the blood dripping down his leg and he just "oh. that's not good."
Mirabel is so fucking competitive. She shows no mercy. once she hit Mariano in the face with a soccer ball so hard his nose broke (again) and she didn't even pause just kept playing
Mirabel fights dirty. Biting, scratching, sand in the eyes. She has to when she's used to fighting a SHAPESHIFTER
Agustín taught Mirabel skills that the rest of the family couldn't do so she'd feel special. He'd throw things into trees so he could ask Mirabel to climb up and get it for him.
Mirabel taught herself how to make stuffed animals. She made one for Antonio when he was born, and for her dad for when he got hurt, and for Camilo for his 10th birthday (he said it was lame but he sleeps with it every night)
Isabela was very jealous of Mirabel and Luisa's close relationship, and started bullying Mirabel for it
Agustín used to say Mirabel's gift was being the heart and soul of the family cause she always made people happy
Bruno and Agustín used to talk a lot before he "disappeared". When Bruno showed up, he just started the last conversation they left off on
Mariano is friends with Isabela, and they bond over loving women and being repressed. The purest friendship is between a lesbian and her himbo
Casita does NOT pick favorites but if it had to it's Mirabel because she talks to Casita outside of when she needs something
Isabela hates pink and purple. It's not even the colors themselves just the fact that she had to be surrounded by them her whole life
Mirabel made Isabela a bunch of new dresses after the movie
Agustín has a little trouble seeing and inferring emotion, so he taught his daughters to be very vocal about their emotions. They taught themselves not to after a while, so he was frustrated because he could never tell what they were feeling.
Agustín usually relies on his wife to understand what's going on because her face is very expressive and he's memorized what her expressions mean
Luisa never asks for anything. When she wants something she holds it up and stares at Julieta or Agustín until she gets a yes or no
Agustín and Julieta would absently pet their kids when they were busy but they wanted attention. they would poke their parents just whenever because they knew it would get them Head Scritches
Agustín almost lost an eye once when spending time with the girls and they wouldn't let him leave Casita for a month
When Mirabel was born, Agustín expressed how he would die for his girls without question. The notion startled the other adults, who also didn't let him leave Casita for a month
When they were dating, Agustín learned to cook so Julieta could take a break.
Isabela used to chew her hair when she was stressed
Luisa very much squeals when she's excited and it's So Loud
The girls go to Julieta for help when they're sad, but they go to Agustín when they just want to cry without doing anything about it
Agustín used to be able to hold all his daughters at once and he cried when he couldn't bc they got too big
Julieta used to enjoy cooking a lot, but eventually it became more of a chore than an enjoyable thing to her
For one of Julieta's birthdays, her husband and daughters tried to cook dinner and bake a cake. They failed spectacularly. She still loved it.
Luisa loves mythology and used to imagine that she was Athena's daughter
Luisa is very much a crybaby and we love her for it
Luisa has frequent nightmares about not being able to protect her family
Isabela accidentally poisoned Augustín with a flower once
Mirabel tried to teach her dad how to sew. It did Not go well
Isabela and Julieta laugh very loudly. Luisa snorts when she laughs. Mirabel and Agustín wheeze when they laugh
Isabela is so expressive naturally and having to bury it all down physically pained her and she got frequent headaches
Isabela likes to scream. just because. she just lets out a "AH" and then goes back to what she was doing
Julieta liked to sit down with her kids and just squish their tiny faces when they were little
Agustín actually likes bees. they just don't seem to like him back lmao
Agustín likes to help and provide for his family like Mirabel does, but he doesn't really have the opportunity. Julieta will send him on random ingredient pickups so he has something to do

did you mean it?
read on ao3.
It’s a total of 3 significant events that led to this, her forehead knocked against his, breaths heavy and mingled, eyes wide and hearts bleeding.
It’s a total of 3 significant events that led to this, her forehead knocked against his, breaths heavy and mingled, eyes wide and hearts bleeding.
The first event isn’t really an event at all. It’s a prologue, necessary context to truly understand the monumentalism of this moment. It’s the memory of her eyes, piercing and reproachful, being the first thing that he saw after losing his mother. It’s shared trauma and oreos while they’re young and naive. It’s truces and training and growing up too soon together. It’s stargazing and stupid jokes saving eachother in every possible way. It's the culmination of the years Percy spent growing, learning, and being with Annabeth, and the unknown and therefore repressed feelings that came with it. Feelings are like the sea in that way, they don’t take well to being restrained. Percy has found that you cannot box in oceans or sentiments, they always find a way to spill over and out, with no regard for the destruction left in its wake.
The second event is Dionysus deciding on a whim that the inhabitants of his camp are ‘uncultured pests’ and taking it upon himself to set up a field trip for campers to the Ancient Greek Cultural Center in New York. (Percy thinks it’s really just to distract kids that were still shaken up about the battle at camp and the losses it caused. But, Dionysus would never say so. He’s far too proud to admit to caring for the children he’s been assigned to look after.) Argus loaded all the kids he could fit into the strawberry vans, as Chiron listed all the reasons this was a terrible idea. As it turns out, his worries were in vain as miraculously, no monsters attacked, and no mortal asked too many questions. No, instead, the only hitch in his plan was the glaring inaccuracies of the Center sending Dionysus into a fit of rage. He ranted for so long, their 2 hour long field trip ended up lasting until the place closed.
Event the third is the ridiculously long line leading to the mens room at the rundown gas station they’ve stopped at, causing Percy to traipse into the woods, deep enough to know that no one other than the squirrels were watching, and pee there. Unbeknownst to him, Annabeth had decided to take a quick walk in the forest as well, (in the opposite direction of his peeing endeavor) with the purpose of clearing her head. Both returned to the parking lot after 10 minutes, with no truck in sight. The gas station lights are turned off on the inside and the door sign has switched decidedly to closed. They look at each other in disbelief.
“Percy?”
“Yeah?”
“Uh...did they…”
“They didn’t. They wouldn’t.”
“I think they would.”
“They would never-”
“I have pretty solid evidence to the contrary.” Annabeth deadpans, casually letting her hair loose and hopping on top of the miniature gas machine for motorcycles.
“But, how did-”
“No Argus.” Which means, no all-seeing eyes to double check the headcount. Percy begins to pace.
“Okay, but-”
“Two trucks.” Both of which are probably assuming Percy and Annabeth are on the other.
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Oh, gods.”
“Leave them out of this.”
“Those fuckers.”
“Which ones?” She asks. He looks up and she’s fighting a smile. He pointedly doesn’t notice the way her mouth curls up, or the way her hair falls around her shoulders and down her back, or how pretty she looks lit up by the neon red lights of the gas stations prices, which apparently doesn’t turn off when they close.
“Do you know something I don’t?”
“I know lots of things you don’t.”
“Ha-ha. I mean about how to get out of here.”
“Ohhhhh, let me think.” She wrinkles her nose in faux concentration, tilting her chin up towards  the sky. Percy is too annoyed to think it’s adorable. “Nope, not a clue.”
“Your phone?”
“Left it on the truck.”
“Iris message?”
“Percy, it’s dark as shit.” The laughter she’s been holding in comes pouring out. Nevermind that he feels his chest sigh in relief at hearing it for the first time since their quest, this is serious.
“You’re laughing.”
“Just a little.”
“You’re telling me, you don’t have a brilliant plan to get us on a truck.”
“Yes.”
“So, we’re stuck here.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re laughing?”
“You’re just really funny when you’re stressed.” She giggles. He can’t remember the last time she giggled. He missed it. He hates her.
“Oh my gods.”
“Okay, okay, look, I’m sorry. We’re halfway to camp right?” He nods. “I’m sure they’ll figure out we’re missing before they get all the way back to camp, but let's say, worst case scenario, they don’t-”
“Not helping-”
“And they make it the rest of the way back to camp. It took us four hours to get to the center, which means camp is two hours away, so if they make it the two hours back to camp before they realize we’re missing, and they drive back up-”
“C’mon ‘Beth, you know I suck at math.”
“We’re stuck here for five hours at most.”
“Five hours?”
“And that's if no passing cars let us use their phones to hurry the process up.”
“Five hours.”
She’s laughing again. “Seriously, what is so funny?”
“It’s just-” Her cheeks are red and she’s very poorly attempting to suppress her smile. “You’ve been calm in so many life or death situations, and being stuck at a gas station is what finally breaks through.”
“It’s nighttime.” She stares at him for a moment and then she’s laughing again, full bodied real laughter, and he's laughing too.
And it’s as if this gas station became their own personal Ogygia, an oasis, a resting place for them to be stupid kids again. And they don’t talk about the battle, or Rachel, or the volcano, or any of the million things set on tearing them apart. They talked about his mom getting serious about his new boyfriend, about Tyson’s underwater adventures and Grover’s searching shenanigans.
They smack talk with no real heat about who the better fighter is (Oh please, Seaweed Brain, I've been training since before you could tie your own shoes.), and argue about which ancient hero had the greatest journey (Hercules, are you kidding? Did you even read the myth?). They break into the gas station for snacks (What the fuck, Annabeth, where’d you learn to pick a lock? No, I wouldn’t prefer you break the glass, you psycho. Oh my gods, can you really break the glass?), and dissolve into giggles as they try to fit five drachma into the cash register.
They end up back outside sitting on the gas machines facing one another from three feet away.
“Your mom called me the other day.”
Percy, who’d been lazily squinting up at the murky sky, searching for any sign of stars, whipped his head to look at her. “What?”
“She called me on the phone. We talked for a bit. She said she wanted to make sure I was alright.”
“That sounds like something she would do.” He sighs and hops down from the machine, turning away from her, hoping to hide his blush from the dim light. “She cornered me on one of my off weekends, asked what was going on with us.”
“Oh.” He hears the shifting of fabric and assumes she followed him in sliding off the gas machine.
“Yeah.” It’s silent for a long time before she responds.
“What did you say?” She asks, her voice smaller than it was moments ago. He hears her scratching at the flat metal top of the machine. “When she asked, what did you say?”
He runs his finger through his hair, and one gets caught in a particularly large snarl. “Doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to me.” She whispers and gods he’s terrified but he really doesn’t have a choice when her voice wavers like that. Her words shake and every ounce of his being tells him to do whatever it takes to soothe it.
“I said we were fighting. That there wasn’t one sole reason for it, just a bunch of little reasons. I told her that I scared you when I….went away for two weeks last summer. And that you didn’t like bringing Rachel on your quest. I told her that we….. disagree about how to best handle Luke. That I probably wanted to protect you more than I wanted to listen to you.” She laughs softly and he blames what he says next on her laugh. It is the catalyst for everything that follows.
“I told her that we’d be okay. Because no matter what happens I’m always gonna love you.”
He hears her breath catch. He doesn’t have to look back to know she’s turned to face him fully. “Did you mean it?” She calls. He doesn’t answer. The words haven’t caught in his throat, they’ve spontaneously combusted in his vocal chords and he doesn’t think he’ll ever speak again.
The sound of gravel crunching gets closer until suddenly she's beside him, and he didn’t tell his torso to twist toward her, he thinks she might just be his center of gravity.
“Did you mean it?”
She’s looking up at him, and her hair smells like lemons, and her cheeks are pink, and her eyelashes go on for miles, and her sunspots are better than stars. And it’s as if she pulls the words right out of him, he’s hypnotized by everything about her.
“Of course I meant it.”
She exhales and closes her eyes and while he mourns the loss of the sight, his body moves on it’s own accord again and he’s edging closer and closer and she opens her eyes and here they are.
Their noses brush, and this time he closes his eyes, and their noses brush just so, and…
Whoa.
He was wrong, it wasn't just those three significant events that to her forehead knocked against his, breaths heavy and mingled, eyes wide and hearts positively bleeding. It’s clear he’s been waiting his entire life for this moment at this shitty gas station.
Waiting for this. Waiting for her.
They kiss for a moment or an eternity, and they fit. His hands are on her hips and hers clutch at his shirt before sliding up to his throat, and it’s like his soul is whispering, oh there you are.
And then she’s pulling back, so she has just enough space to shake her head without disconnecting from his forehead.
She's breathless when she whispers, “This is a bad idea.”
His hands trail up and down her forearm of their own accord, and when he whispers back he’s breathless too. “Yeah, really bad idea.”
Her hands slide up from his chest to his shoulders, and then she’s kissing him again, with purpose, and he’s kissing back like his life depends on it because he thinks it might, thinks if he lets go of her he’d die on the spot.
It seems his theory might get tested when she pulls back again just far enough to whisper against his lips, “Is it always like that?”
He kisses her again, once, twice, because he can’t help it and whispers back, “I don’t know, you were my first kiss.”
He’d released any serious hold he had on her the moment she hesitated, but then she’s rocking back up to meet him halfway and his entire body thinks thank the gods. He actually sighs his relief into her mouth, as his hands desperately reach for her face, some fingers tangling in her hair, and their lips are magnets, opposites that don’t have a choice but to pull together. Despite how much he wants to keep doing this forever, he has to tell her.
“I don’t wanna lose you, again.” He means not ever, but he figures she understands the severity in his voice. She’s running her hand through his hair, and his slide up and down her back, and she knocks her nose against his as she answers, “I know, me either. I’m confused, this is confusing me.” And she tilts her chin just so, like she did a million years ago, and this time he kisses her.
They kiss for an infinity, he gets to taste her laughter when she giggles at the absurdness of it all, and it’s better than ambrosia. He kisses her until he doesn’t know anything else, until his entire universe is Annabeth Chase, with her cheeks and her curls and her lips. She is everything.
And then headlights penetrate their universe, voices bring an end to their infinity, and Chiron is speaking but it’s nothing, it’s all white noise because she’s no longer in his arms, and his center of gravity is being ripped away and he hears someone ask, “What’d you guys do?”
He’s still looking at her face when she answers, “You know, tried not to strangle each other mostly.”
But, she looks back before she turns all the way around and her gaze is charged and her lips quirk with the secret they share.
He is so screwed.
