I can't seem to read ANYTHING fiction rn that isn't DW, DW adjacent, or scifi that's been on my to read list forever BUT. Hypothetically if I am ever capable of reading anything else ever again, what's the best reading order for WC for people who were too busy rereading Percy Jackson for the 87th time to read it before. Most skippable books? Least skippable books? Will cat Ianto be enough to convince my brain that WC is DW adjacent?
first of all. yes cat ianto DOES mean wc is dw adjacent and i will die on this hill <3
anyways i would definitely start with the prophecies begin arc aka start with into the wild. i feel like all 6 books in that arc are super important for world building and understanding how clans work etc etc. the authors still didnt really know what they were going for when they wrote this arc and it makes it? better? in a weird way? also it has two of the coolest and funkiest villains in the entire series (being scourge and brokenstar)
(anything below this point is just me rambling LMFAO sorry i didnt realize how much i typed)
the second arc (the new prophecy) is kind of boring and sucks and like. yes it has very important and permanent plot stuff in it but the only book thats rly good that i remember is sunset...
the third arc (power of three) fucks ummm like every book is good i think. characters are cool the story is fun and it makes me want to eat concrete like every good book series should
the fourth arc (omen of the stars) every book is good except sign of the moon which made me stop my reread originally because its literally so fucking boring
the fifth arc (a vision of shadows) is ok..........the villains kinda make it worth it but kind of not ? shattered sky is really really good but the rest of it is kind of forgettable.....
the sixth arc (the broken code) is ongoing. however so far it is definitely my second favorite arc and its fucking insane!!!!!! really good writing compared to some of the other books imo!!!!!!!
the dawn of the clans arc is the Best and most well written arc imo!!!!!! i definitely wouldnt start with it but its kind of like a prequel for the whole series. like shows where all the clans came from etc etc and thats where clear sky is from!!! unfortunately the least likeable character is in fact the main protagonist (hes kind of just ...... boring and annoying hsdfbdshfsbd) but i think the plot and rest of the characters make up for it!!!
the super editions are very hit or miss. same w/ the novellas. here r my recommendations
good super editions: bluestar's prophecy, crookedstar's promise, tallstar's revenge, HAWKWING'S JOURNEY (this one explains a lot of whats going on in the fifth arc and imo is like.....way more fun to read than that whole arc HGDBGH),
okay super editions: firestar's quest, yellowfang's secret, moth flight's vision, tigerheart's shadow, crowfeather's trial, graystripe's vow
PLEASE GOD SKIP THESE: bramblestar's storm, skyclan's destiny
the novellas r a bit harder to assess bc some of them i really havent read since i was 11 but like. uh. tbh id say all of them are worth a shot EXCEPT for spottedleaf's heart. fuck that book and fuck everything that happens in it and fuck the authors for writing it <3. other than that i either think theyre pretty good or i just dont remember the events that take place HDBHFDBSFHSD
theres other stuff like the graphic novels and fields guides but i have already said. so much

Yule Ball Dilemma // Draco Malfoy x Reader - Chapter 3
Summary: The Yule Ball is approaching and one of the main problems students are facing besides their studies is who they're going to the ball with. You couldn't care less. You believe that you'll be able to enjoy the ball whether you have a partner or not. Draco, on the other hand, has been thinking about asking you to be his partner.But what's this? Someone else is also planning on asking you out? Will they beat Draco to it or will Draco man up and ask you out first?
A/N: I scratched the original outline for this chapter and redid it and honestly this one's much better lmao. I also scratched the idea of making an epilogue and just merged it in this one because I literally can't stretch the story any longer HAHA. This is supposed to be a oneshot ffs
Sorry this took so long!!! I got sidetracked and I'm now deep in Animal Crossing (Pocket Camp, not NH I'm broke).
No beta since I literally just finished writing this and it's 6am and my beta readers are asleep orz
Anyways! I hope you enjoy it!! I'm going to try to work on the requests without stressing myself out too much because I noticed that I do that a lot :') I might start an actual series soon too but it's still 50-50.

Before you even managed to register what Macmillan just said, Draco lunged at Macmillan. His fist met the poor Hufflepuff’s face which made him stumble backward. Your eyes widened when you saw the bruising around Ernie’s right eye. He charged at Draco and punched him back, breaking his nose. You panicked at the sight of blood on Draco’s face. 
“Stop it! Both of you!”
The two didn’t hear your yells as they were too busy grabbing and trying to hit the other. You tried to pull Draco away but he was too strong and you couldn’t successfully pry him away from the other boy. Everyone in the Great Hall is now looking at two fighting boys. To your luck, Professor Snape has arrived, along with Professor McGonagall and Professor Sprout. Professor McGonagall whips out her wand and separates the two with a wordless spell. 
“Care to explain yourselves?” Professor Snape’s voice was the same as usual but you can sense a bit of annoyance in his tone. 
“He started it!” Macmillan exclaimed, pointing a finger at Draco. “He just punched me out of nowhere!” Draco tried to raise his fist again but Snape was holding his arm back. “Professor, he was being—”
“No more reasons! Both of you.” Professor McGonagall said sternly. “20 points from Slytherin and Hufflepuff for fighting in the Great Hall. I will also talk to your head of house about your detention.” You heard groans from both the Slytherin and Hufflepuff table. Professor Snape and Professor Sprout then brought the two boys to the hospital wing as Professor McGonagall tells everyone to go back into their dormitories. 
“I’m going to go check on them. You guys go ahead.” You waved your friends goodbye and went to the hospital wing. You were fuming. Not only did the two of them make a scene, but Draco also managed to make your house lose points and get himself hurt. You weren’t really mad over losing points, you were angry over the fact that Draco did something so irrational.
You swung the door to the hospital wing open and walked by Professor Snape and Professor Sprout on your way in. Once you’ve spotted the two boys, you angrily stomped towards their beds. Madam Pomfrey just left to fetch something she’ll need to lessen the swelling on the boys’ faces. They were looking away from each other, avoiding each other’s gaze. Draco tried to open his mouth to explain but you cut him off.
“What were you two thinking?” You yelled at them in frustration. Macmillan looked at you. You could barely see the blackeye around his right eye but the swelling was still there.
“Y/N, you saw it yourself. He attacked me first!” He tried to explain. “That doesn’t mean that the two of you should start fighting in the Great Hall.” You glared at him and he lowered his head. “In front of other students and teachers too! Have you got no decency?” You saw Draco about to speak up in the corner of your eye but before he could, your glare shifted from the Hufflepuff to him.
“And you!” If looks could kill, Draco would have been dead on the spot. He has never seen you this mad before. “I don’t even know what to say to you. I’m so angry at the two of you right now.” You brought your hands to your face and tried to take a deep breath. You wanted to pull your hair out of frustration. You looked at them one last time, with the same angry glare, and left. You can’t handle seeing their faces right now, you needed to cool off. 
Draco made his way back to the common room immediately after Pomfrey had healed his broken nose. He remembered how angry you were when you showed up in the hospital wing and he was scared that you’d ignore him once you see him. He whispers the password and the bricks open to reveal the Slytherin common room. 
The moment he stepped in, the first years, who were doing their essays in the common room, hurried back to their dorms. He saw his friends sitting by the fireplace and made his way towards them. They were the only ones in the common room since the moment another student saw Draco, they just hurried back to their dorms. 
“Nice punch.” Theo snickered, Draco just scowled at him. It wasn’t funny. 
Seeing Draco’s reaction, Blaise smacked his potions book behind Theo’s head and mouthed the words “Not funny.” This made Theo shut up, but he was still grinning like an idiot. Three figures sitting on the floor caught Draco’s attention.
 He swallowed the lump in his throat when he noticed that it was you, Pansy, and Daphne. The two girls were sitting across you as you finished ranting to them. You buried your face on the pillow you were hugging. The two girls just rubbed your back in an attempt to comfort you. 
You didn’t notice Draco making his way behind you since you currently have your face buried on a pillow. Pansy noticed him and stood up, followed by Daphne.
“You better make up to her.” Pansy glared at Draco and poked his chest with a finger before she left. Daphne just gave him a sad smile and left. 
You noticed the sudden disappearance of the two comforting figures in front of you and raised your head to confirm that the two girls you were just talking to were now gone.
“Y/N,” You heard Draco say behind you. You felt the anger you felt earlier coming back and quickly stood up. You tried to ignore him and just make your way to the dorms when you felt him grab you by your wrist. The rest of your friends noticed this and immediately scurried back to their dorms, leaving you and Draco alone in the common room.
You pulled your hand away from his and crossed your arms across your chest with a huff.
“What do you want?”
You tried your best to look mad. You felt your heart twist when you saw the sad expression on his face. No. You’re not going to give in easily. He didn’t answer your question. Instead, he just looked at the ground, not meeting your gaze. You exhaled sharply and uncrossed your arms to bring them to your sides.
“What you did earlier was stupid, Draco.” You started. “You didn’t have to launch yourself at Macmillan. You should’ve let me handle it. Look, you even got yourself hurt and cost us points!" You exclaimed. “I promised you I wouldn’t entertain him. Did you think I would break that promise?” Your voice faltered. “Don’t you trust me?” Draco looked up to see the mixture of anger and sadness on your face, mostly sadness. 
“No, It’s not that,” He grabbed both of your hands and held it in his. “I trust you, Y/N. It’s just—I just couldn’t handle seeing him so close to you.” His eyebrows furrowed in annoyance as he recalls the scene from earlier, Macmillan asking you out, a bouquet in his hand. You pulled your hands away, which made Draco frown. As much as you love him holding your hands, you need to hold onto your angry façade.  
“What do you mean?”
“He fancies you, Y/N.” He explained. You were surprised. Macmillan fancies you? “I just can’t have him asking you out before I do. You know how much I hate competition.” He was now rambling. He wasn’t even looking at you directly and you noticed the shade of pink starting to spread on his cheeks up to the tip of his ears. 
“I was planning to ask you out myself, I just couldn’t find the right moment—” He stopped when he heard you laughing. Your angry expression was now replaced with a smile. He felt his heart pounding in his chest when he saw your face. You wiped a tear from your eye and looked up to him. His entire face was now pink and you couldn’t help but laugh again.
"You could've just asked me. You know I'll never say no to you." You told him as you tried to calm yourself down. He grabs your hands once more and holds them. “It’s not just that.” You shot him a confused look. 
“What—” Before you could finish your sentence, he presses his lips against yours. Your eyes widen. He pulls away to see your reaction. Just like him, you were furiously blushing. Your mouth was hanging open from the surprise and Draco couldn’t help but chuckle. 
“I’ve always fancied you, Y/N.” He cups your cheek with his hand as you stare at him, mouth open. You were still processing the fact that Draco kissed you. Not only that, but he also confessed that he fancies you. You continued to stare at him as you brought a hand to his face. Your thumb gently caressing the bruise by his lips as you examined his face. 
You couldn’t believe it. You couldn’t believe this is happening.  You tried so hard to push away your feelings for him because you were scared and in denial. You were scared that he wouldn’t feel the same and you would end up ruining your friendship. A friendship you both cherished. 
A smile appeared on your lips as everything finally sank in. He likes you back. You prayed that you weren’t dreaming. If this was a dream, you’d prefer not to wake up. Your eyes met his. He was looking at you with so much adoration you might just melt.
“Well then,” You broke the silence. “Are you going to ask me now or not?”
Draco raised an eyebrow. “What?” He has completely forgotten about the Yule Ball at this point. All that matters to him is you in front of him.
“As your date, silly.” You softly laughed and he swore his heart fluttered. “Are you going to ask me out as your date for the Yule Ball?” He chuckled as he wrapped his hands around your waist.
“I have a better question, actually.” He leaned towards your face, your foreheads touching.
“Will you be my girlfriend?”
You giggled as you wrap your arms around his neck. You leaned forward, planting a quick kiss on his lips. 
“Yes.”
Draco started humming your favorite tune. The two of you closed your eyes, foreheads touching once more as you slowly swayed to his humming.
Meanwhile, by the stairs, an annoyed Theo hands a grinning Pansy twenty galleons. The two of them made a bet on which of the two would confess first. They tried to get Blaise to join but he didn’t want to. Theo was confident that it was going to be you, while Pansy believed that it would be Draco. The four (Pansy, Daphne, Blaise, and Theo) watched as the two of you wallowed in your moment.

It was finally time for the Yule Ball. You examined your reflection in the mirror. You felt gorgeous in your gown. Not to mention the makeup look Pansy gave you made you feel more beautiful. You smiled as you imagined what Draco’s reaction would be when he sees you. You were confident that he would probably be head over heels for you. 
“Y/N, you look stunning!” You saw Pansy’s figure appear behind your reflection. Pansy looked gorgeous. You shot her back a compliment and she just waved it off. 
“I still can’t believe Blaise asked you out and you said yes.” You said as Pansy just rolled her eyes.
“Don’t get it all twisted, Y/N. I only said yes because the ball was close and I don’t want to attend the ball alone.” She said as she crossed her arms across her chest. “Unlike you, not all of us have a boyfriend that could take them to the ball.” Pansy grinned as she noticed your face turning red. Ever since you and Draco got together, your friends would always find a way to rub it in. You don’t really mind but it doesn’t fail to make you flustered. 
“Ugh, I just can’t believe all it would take for the two of you to realize your feelings for each other is to have Draco punch someone.” The two of you laughed. You took one last look in front of the mirror before you headed downstairs.
 The moment Draco saw you walking down the stairs, he swore you were the most beautiful thing his eyes had ever landed on. You chuckled at the sight of Draco staring at you with his mouth open. He shook his head as you approached closer. He took your hand and kissed it. You blushed at the gesture and held onto his arm when he offered it. 
“Don’t you look lovely tonight, darling.” He mentioned as you and your friends made your way to the Great Hall. You caught yourself blushing again once the pet name escaped his lips. Ever since you started dating, he would refrain from calling you anything but pet names. He loved the way you get flustered whenever he says it. You gathered yourself together, trying to brush off the blood rushing on your face. 
“You don’t look bad yourself, Draco.” You replied. He looked ravishing in his dress robes. He chuckled at your response and planted a kiss on your cheek.
“Oi, save that for later when no one’s around.” You heard Blaise say behind you, Pansy in his arm cackling. You just stuck your tongue out at him and returned your attention to Draco. 
When you entered the Great Hall, you almost couldn’t believe you were in the Great Hall. You and your friends made your way to the side as Professor Dumbledore announced the entrance of the champions and their dates. 
Everyone lost it when they saw Granger on Viktor Krum’s arm. She looked completely different. Not in a bad way, even you would admit that. You can’t exactly point out what it was that made her look more beautiful but you couldn’t help but stare, like everybody else.
Well, everybody except Draco. His eyes were fixed on you. You didn’t notice that he was staring at you as you were too busy staring at the champions and their dates. Draco looked at you as if you were the most precious and most beautiful gem in the entire world. 
After the champions and everyone else danced, you and your friends were standing by the sides, talking and occasionally observing the crowd. You were quietly sipping your drink while leaning on Draco, who was playing with your hair when you heard a familiar tune play. You squint, trying to focus on the music. 
Draco was surprised when you suddenly squealed and placed your drink down before you dragged him into the dance floor. Then he realized the music that was playing. It was your favorite. 
The two of you pressed your palms together as you began dancing your special dance. He held your hand in his as he twirled you. Everyone on the dance floor was now looking at the two of you but Draco couldn’t care less. 
All he cared about is how happy you look as his arms slide against yours. As the two of you swayed along to the music. The rest of the world seemed to disappear as he looked at your smiling face.
The song ended and everyone went back to minding their own business. Draco had his arms on your waist and you had your arms wrapped around his neck as the two of you slowly danced. 
“We should get back to our friends.” He whispered at you as you felt his hand leave your waist. You hugged him and buried your face on his chest. He was surprised but he wrapped his arms around you, hugging you back.
“I love you, Draco” Your voice was muffled but he heard you clearly.
You could hear his heartbeat beat faster as he buried his face in your hair. 
“I love you too.” He whispered.
You looked up to meet his eyes. You gave him a warm smile before you reached up to him and kissed him. You felt him smile in the kiss as he brought his hands to cup your face.
This night just couldn’t get any better.

so i finally watched the new season of stranger things, and i still stick by my original opinion that this series was only written to be a one season show. When s2 came it out it seemed clear to me, that with its big success they scrambled to push out s2, which is clearly weaker, repetitive and just kinda disappointing and stinky. the first season i loved! it was a great mystery, its was a coming of age period piece, it was horror, humor, suspense, it was all these great things that felt right and actually was written really well as a whole, and even more impressive, there was some pretty good acting by a cast of children. the whole 80s angle was great in s1 but it wasnt the huge ridiculousness it became in s3. like it was just too over the top and just stupid at point. the music. oh jeez every scene had an 80s song. it just felt a little desperate. like they did that in the first season too, but it wasnt this blatant and bottom of the barrel. idk. it was just played up too hard or something.

the problem i think is that they only thought this was going to be a one season show because they did the one thing youre not supposed to do in a mystery, which is solve it at the end of s1. so they had to come up with something in s2 quick, cause kids grow fast and you need to capitalize on the cultural thing it became, and they basically did the same damn thing as s1. they also made the mistake of adding more and more people in the damn show. i tried finding a pic of the entire cast all in one pic and you just cant find one, CAUSE THERES JUST TOO MANY OF THEM!!!! which is a huge problem starting in s2 and in s3. stop adding more kids!! you had the core 4 kids who were really great together. there was good chemistry among them, and also with 11 too and the parents and sheriff thicc. adding all these new kids just left less for the original 4 kids to say and do. 11 will always be the main character and have the most to do. but what the hell did lucas do all season 3, or mike besides being a love interest for 11, or will besides grab the back of his neck… and it would seem to me that will would be as integral to the main plot as eleven is, since he was in the underground, and had all this shit happen to him, so hed have some kind of target on him or have some knowledge or idk something more to do, but no, theres just another shot of him and his spidey-sense not saying or doing much else. 
like i said the problem is there too many damn people. get rid of nancy, jonathan, steve, max, erica, billy i could do without them all, or at least shrink their roles considerably. the nancy and jonathan adventures were just painful s2, and just boring and pointless this season, cause whatever they dug up, 11 would have gotten to it anyway. erica was just a pain in the ass little shit, who had a couple good one liners but was mostly just an uneccesary mean shit, and ok shes a math genius, thats good, at least they shaded her character a little more than just being a dee from whats happening clone. and it like dustin was also a math genius he could have done all that without her, and her role could have easily been smaller to give the main cast more to do. max is another not well written character but at least they gave her something more to do, i liked her friendship with 11 and her helping evolve and mature the most important character of the show. 
and like i get it that the guy who plays steve is a popular actor and his character is popular, but the really stupid bond he and dustin have is almost cringe worthy. like why is this college aged adult hanging around these literal children. he might as well be a pair of loafers, they shoe horned him in so desperately. 
ugh, i just wish whatever lmagic they created in s1 found its way into either of the next 2 seasons, but it didnt. it lost what was special about it, and that kinda sucks.

Eden’s Zero Chapter 1 Review
Hey guys, now before I dive into this already longer than usual review, I did wanna take this time to mention something. Its been no secret that I turned on Mashima and FT pretty hardly after the end of FT and some of you may be aware that I was moderately active in the fanbase with putting out my reviews and such. That said some may liken that shift in mentality to me not liking how the story went and a common critique of fans is that when what they’re fans of doesn’t gel with what they want they wanna destroy it. As if the fan has ownership of the source of the fanaticism.
I admit there are times that I’ve question decisions on Hiro Mashima’s end and has posted rewrites, but that’s not me doing it out of a sense of ownership. I’m doing it because I have a standard. Being a fan of something and letting your disappointment get to you and fester into salty, bitchy purest is one thing, but being a person who’s judging what a series puts out and actually caring about the quality of what’s in the popular media is important. FT got negative reviews in its latter half because it was that bad. By the end of the series it was legit that bad. Now I don’t say that is someone who was in the fanbase and hated Hiro’s decisions cause they weren’t mine, I hated them because it was bad writing. I’m a reader with standards, as are all of you, and in the digestion of media we make distinctions between good and bad. I make this claim with more concrete surety now that I’ve been around longer and have reviewed more series than just FT, I think it be harder to believe if I made this case when I was just starting and all I was talking about at the time was FT.
Some of you might remember when I first started out on MHA, my second chapter I ever reviewed I had found it boring and mundane and to date its my least popular MHA review and I still stand by that assertion. I hold everything to the same standard, and that includes FT. The reason I write this is that while throughout this review I will mention comparison’s to FT’s first chapter (and yes, even ways Eden’s Zero improved on it), but I will be holding it to the same standard. So this entire review won’t be me holding a grudge against Hiro, but it will be me holding it to the same standard as I do everything I read. That out of the way lets dive in.

We open on a hill side and met our MC named Shiki. Beside him is the mecha demon from the cover page and what they see is a... dragon. Yeah, Hiro I thought you wanted this to be wholely original?

On the hand I actually like this scene in the sense robo demon here is actually encourging actual adventure (something FT lacked) and its kinda amazing listening to this demon looking guy talking about friendship, yet on the other hand, damnit Hiro. Is this the only thing how to write about? Like damn man.

We cut to the future where we see our main female Lucy-I mean Rebecca! Y’know I could make a Rebecca from One Piece joke, but she’s kinda already a bit of a decisivee figure so I’m not gonna bother.

I mean its okay. Its just castle theme park. Also Rebecca we find out is apparently a youtuber. Look if DBS can have GodTube then I can put up with Blue Cate (Aoneko) website. Also yeah Happy here, no sugar coating its just Happy. Also Rebecca here purposely made her skirt short. Just because you point out the sexualization in canon doesn’t make it better, ya still drew it, Hiro.

We see that the theme park is full of robots and each one acts as an assist in sending the guest through some kind of medieval simulator. And if anyone has seen Westworld you know where this is heading. To be fair I love worldbuilding so please, explore!

So we find out Rebecca’s dream is to have one million suscribers and now here’s where I gotta give props to Hiro because he actual made a dream for a character that doesn’t seem like it can be achieved a chapter from now. Granted this seems a bit hard to actually quantify, but this dream could potenially evolve into something of why she wants the suscribers and could be like Nami making the map of the world that getting video of unknown locations may actually be worth something to the general population.
We see that Rebecca chooses to go on a monster hunting quest and they encounter...

...This thing. Also it seems Rebecca’s character quirk is she really likes cats I guess? But this doesn’t last long as someone crashes down on mecha cat.

Okay that was kinda funny. I mean if this was FT would’ve actually gotten the panty shot so maybe Hiro has learned his lesson! Also note that wrench!

Oh god damnit Hiro. So this tarzan guy after acting like an animal is knocked out by Rebecca. Y’know it took about 60 chapters before Natsu got all up in Lucy’s chest, guess we’re cutting straight to the chase here.

Okay is joke with here just going be about here short skirt? Damning it with faint praise here, but at least he still hven’t flashed us them yet. Also Tarzan here is the only human on the island.

We get some scenes of Shiki here wanting to be friends with Rebecca cause she’s a human and Rebecca isn’t interested and she returns to the Granbell town where Shiki is there and the robots know who he is.

Shiki’s expressions and creepy advances really gives off this tinge of sci-fi horror, unfortunate Hiro doesn’t really go that route and we’ll get to it. Also that wizard looking robot from the color page is also here.
They then have a party where the robots all celebrate them having a costumer for the first time in so long they have a party being nice to Rebecca and lavishing her with stuff outside is robot that looks like Robin Hood and he reports to his boss this machine king.

We see Shiki trying to bond with Rebecca and it leads to him expressing he wants to leave the kingdom and see another country, but we also learn he’s in charge of fixing this and the robots are acting up lately. We find out that the one who was talking to Shiki and is his “Grandfather” was called the Demon King a robot designed for playing that role in the park.

Umm Rebecca... That’s being a dick. So you don’t like it, so you decide to cut it, cause it bothers you. You could’ve framed it like, “If he fixes you up then maybe he needs better vision” or “He’s been so nice to me, let me do something for him.” And what makes this worse s that Shiki is asleep, so she doesn’t even consult his feelings. Like seriously, that’s not being a good friend . But for contrivances sake I’m sure Shiki will wake up and love it, won’t he?

Y’know I said I’d give Hiro atleast two free fanservice moments for his first 3 chapters. He’s now used all of them up in a single chapter. Also Rebecca is tied to a stake while robots with torches surround her along with the machine king.

Shiki is also there and here’s something that did remind me of rave, the tightness of the first chapter. Everything seems to flow like one continuous story and doesn’t seem to do some dumb interlude like FTs first chapter did with that awkward moment where Lucy leaves Natsu and she’s just randomly in the park reading.

Oh wow, for a first chapter villain that’s actually a really deep thing to unload. That as amusment park hosts they must’ve just been seen as pleasure tools and with no one around these robots who seem to be senstinent must’ve felt betrayed and...

Oooooor you cut out all moral ambiguity by just saying they have a virus. Sure. Trust me, this is where it gets stupid really stupid. And that’s the inconsistency.
So these robots I guess are like the ones from the Animatrix where they just kinda develop sentience out of nowhere. But unlike Animatrix it doesn’t seem to imply when they developed this sentience and that they began to think they were being abused.

So why do you hate humans? They abandoned you I guess, but there’s not other robot saying “hey our times were fun together” no everyone is like they left us to rot  so we hate them. Not like Humans did anything legitimate bad. We actually see that at the end of the chapter that there is some sort of central battery on the park that all robots are hooked up to. You could make their reason for hating humans that. That even though they left these sentiment robots still had a little kingdom to themselves, but realized that its all just going to end one day and humans didn’t even bother to unplug them. They’re existence is literally knowing when they’ll die, imagine that as why they harbor negative emotions and maybe Shiki actually fixing things might’ve actually been prolonging their lives so maybe that be why they kept him around. This whole sentience things just feels like Hiro wanted to do a trope of crazy robots and ended using multiple to fit the whatever story purpose at the moment.

You do run the planet, dumbasses. This entire plane, apparently for hundreds of years, has been solely controlled by you. Maye this should be rephrased as, going to the place that built you to get revenge or as I spoiled with the battery we’ll take the ship to get more power for our kingdom?
Shiki doesn’t do anything and kinda lets the robots just wail on him as he found out all things in his life were a lie. Then Rebecca gives a friendship speech. A stupid stupid friendship speech.

You’re right, Rebecca! Too bad we didn’t see that. I’m serious we barely see memories of Shiki with any robot outside of the demon king and Michael so there’s no weight to this conflict. We only get the vague sense they raised hm, but there’s no moments of Shiki really laughingg and enjoying their company outside of the party with Rebecca which rather is made more for getting Shiki to like Rebecca for this moment.

So they fight with shitty action scenes (If I can give Horikoshi a hard time for how he draws his fight choreography, then I sure as hell will give Hiro the once over.) Happy manages to save Rebecca and like Happy from early FT, he basically spots off exposition on powers.

So is it like a literal gear? Because Happy afterward destincties as the Gear of Gravity, so is it like a devil fruit? Is ether in all humans, but this specific gear brings it out in a certain way? If its internal then I guess its like the magic circuits from Fate? And then every of has their own unique variation like Nen? Like cause Happy gives it the distinction of Gravity it doesn’t seem like Shiki gives a reason why he has this power. I’m hoping \its like devil fruits, literal gears you implant and then it brings out your ether in a certain way.

Credit where credit is due, Hiro actually did build up the reveal of this power throughout the chapter and its actually really well done. Kinda reminds of something Oda would do with subtly building up a devil fruit power without revealing it. Like Crocodile drying out a flower but it isn’t stated his power is specifically sand.
They then flee when the other robots rally and Shiki takes Rebecca back to her ship.

This scene would actually be really nice if we actually saw more young shiki actually having fun with the machines and not a being a creeper with them.

It seems like worlds in this universe are basically like kingdom hearts worlds. They’re not real “worlds” so much as they are islands in space.

Well great place to end the chapter. Little dry of a first story, but I definetly see that has room for improvment and there is something-Wait this isn’t the last page? But what else is there to talk about. There’s nothing left-

Oh for fuck sake. That’s right they were trying to send SHiki away. Because apparently these robots thought there was no way to restore battery life even if stayed.
Here’s a tip, ifyou really care, and had such a close bond, maybe tell him to leave? Tell SHiki the truth that you guys are tied to a battery and instead of Shiki vowing to leave for the stars so he can make 100 friends (I’m not kiding that’s his actual goal here). Then this would be an interesting goal.
But no, you have to act like human hating jackasses and shatter the boy’s entire reality, just so you he would go out and “change the universe”

This would be a really nice scene with a very nice amount of character development starting point, if we actually saw their past. All we know is they raised Shiki, but its never really seemed like they’re loving or caring or Shiki openly gets upset if one of them had a problem. Again the biggest flaw with this chapter is that it sacrifices seeing one potentially interesting relationship (Shiki and the robots) for another one (Rebecca).

So we end on this page which reveals that Shiki’s goal is to have a hundred friends. Not going to say something snarky I just realized this is the same motivation as Yuki from future diary. Like before the crazy yandere shit.
Post Chapter follow up:
Lets be positive and look at the good stuff in this chapter. The first thing great about this chapter is it improved upon two of the biggest failings in the first chapter FT. Goals established and world building. Not only does this set up force Hiro Mashima to actually world build (literally) but each person in the first chapter has a goal that doesn’t seem like it can be accomplished quickly. It means we can have investment in the story.
Another thing I’ll give is Shiki is an okay MC. He has more personality than Natsu, but not as much as Haru and this first chapter is about him. Its easy to understand that Lucy is often considered the MC of FT because it literally focuses on her for the story than Natsu. But this chapter had a healthy balance.
Also the power system at least seems to have some definition. Unlike how anyone could have magic yet normal people just don’t choose to use it like in FT. Ether Gear seems to be a powersource that only a select few can use. Now we need to see first if there are ways of combating it like technology or such so a non ether gear person can still fight.
It also has its own unique aesthetic. Ft is a pretty generic fantasy world. It doesn’t have the bleakness of bereserk or the Japanese aesthetic of naruto. You could say Black CLover, Fairy Tail, and Seven Deadly sins all had their first chapter happen in the same world and I’d have trouble arguing it.
Now on to the crappy stuff. This series suffers from the usual Mashima foibles such as the sexual harassment, the stupidly way it tries to justify and give all conflict happy ending, not actually bothering to have a situation drawn out ad built up too, etc. I mean for the first conflict of the chapter its a heavy one, these guys raised SHiki yet their own mentality is against humans so Shiki has to choose, but instead of actually answering that question, it turns out there was no real conflict and the machines were just faking.
As for my like for Shiki, I flat hate Rebecca. She is so pointless and useless. Look I will defend Lucy and she actually can d things. First chapter she saved Natsu by using aquarius. But Rebecca? She’s just all of the bad traits of post timeskip Lucy. She is used for pointless fanservice, does nothing contribute, and becomes a mouth piece for friendship.
Speaking of friendship as a concept and goal here, Hiro just rewrite what you mean. Have deeper meaning than friends for once. There is ways you could take the motivation “I want to make 100 friends” in a compelling way. Prehaps Shiki is going out to make his own world where he can make a happy place for people where they can laugh and cry in harmony. Like story telling wise its pretty weak.
Like me personally, I would’ve taken the first chapter like this, the robots are sentinet and they are nice to Shiki and Rebecca and they have genuine fun together. They gradually reveal that they are shutting down maybe one starts acting wonky and tries to hide it and maybe the machine king is the real bad guy. He has sentinece and hates humans and he wants to eliminate SHiki and Rebecca and that’s because they’re shutting down. The other robots say they don’t care they were abandoned, they were mad at first but Shiki showed them that why they loved catering to humans. King and Shiki fight and they all reveal they’re shutting down and Shiki cries he doesn’t want them to go. The robots say its inevitable and they don’t hpw to recharge the battery and Shiki vows to leave the planet and search for a power source to bring them all back. Then that’s shiki’s goal and it even can cause questions like “Is it worth all this for machines?” or “who designed them maybe we can figure out the right substance to power them up?”
or if Hiro wanted to go a more darker route. Have the machines have no sentience and literally be dolls for the King who turns out to be a human who stayed here on Granbell and made his own little kingdom. Make it a bit meta on how Shiki’s only friends were just hollow imitations of people who were only friends because that’s what their programming dictated and they can all be switched off. It be meta as critiquing Ft and how all the guild characters basically had no conflicts, all got along, and were just friends with no depth or reason.
This all highlights the issue with Hiro Mashima and that’s he is not a good a writer. Hiro is an incredibly talented person and can come up with incredibly unique ideas and looks, which is why his cover pages are the best things he puts out because its him free forming. But writing. He has a limited scope on that and stuff like sci-fi and fantasy can be very morally grey things. But Hiro doesn’t seem to understand tragedy in the sense that its tragic because a person fails or dies unsatisfied. But he only seems to know how to write painfully obvious concepts like “save the world” or “friendship” instead doing a concept like “what it is to be a hero” like MHA does which can have a variety of answers to it.
So what’s the final verdict? Well I actually am going to do something different than usual. I’m going to say what I though the quality was compared to FT and then to what I’d consider this work compared to anything else.
In comparison to FT, Eden’s Zero gets a Final verdict of 8/10
Improves on a lot of FT’s first chapter flaws
Created a more unique environment for a story
And actually has a lot tighter narrative
But in comparison to everything else...
Final Verdict: 5/10
Even if it wasn’t Hiro, its a pretty generic start (some names aren’t even all that inspired like Machine King, Demon King)
Potential to grow into something better is there
Nothing is outright offensive

12 ‘Unpopular’ Viddy Game Opinions
I’ve seen this topic floating around a lot, but didn’t think I had enough ‘unpopular but maybe not’ opinions about games to make a post. Turns out I do! So if you see this and I say something blasphemous, remember it’s just my opinion and my personal experiences with the games I list. Hope you enjoy or hey, maybe even agree with some of this!

12. The opening of Kingdom Hearts II isn’t as terrible as everyone says

Okay, so it’s not brilliant, but at the same time, I don’t think it’s the worst. For those not in the know, KH2′s opening is a basically a massive slog where you play as a character you don’t know or care about with seemingly no real link to the events of the previous game. The general consensus is that there’s some interesting stuff in here, but it’s buried among endless dialogue that really doesn’t mean much. And they’re right, but I really think there’s some great stuff here that people tend to gloss over. The music and the motif of Twilight Town is atmospheric, there’s some genuinely intriguing plot elements that are woven into Roxas’ story and believe it or not, the stuff that happens here is intrinsic to the rest of the game. So yeah, it drags on a little, but I don’t think KH2 would be miles better without this opening.
11. I loved Breath of the Wild’s final boss

One of the problems I see talked about with Breath of the Wild is that the boss fights are fairly mediocre, especially the very last one, Dark Beast Ganon. And I couldn’t disagree more. I think every boss in the game is wonderfully crafted, intense, challenging and great for testing you on what you’ve learned throughout the game by encouraging you to make creative use of your slate powers and the flurry rush technique. And while Mr. Pig Man at the end here is sort of easy and short, it serves as a brilliantly epic finale to damn near perfect game. While the difficulty is mostly gone after the mammoth fight with Calamity Ganon, it’s still just as intense as you frantically fire off arrows into the massive beast in front of you. Plus, the design of this thing is one of the best looking monsters in the game, so I really don’t understand the dislike for this ending.
10. I really like Crash of the Titans

Okay, so maybe childhood nostalgia has something to do with this pick, but every Crash fan I’m aware of seems to hate this game. But I don’t really know where the hate comes from! I played the PS2 version of this and I thought it was a genuinely fun 3D platformer with a variety of locations, good visuals, well-designed boss battles and even a vague story you can sort of follow! The game’s main gameplay feature is also brilliantly integrated, as using Aku Aku to possess various monsters throughout the game keeps everything interesting. One thing I will say though, that tiger dude you have to fight about halfway through is the most annoying thing I’ve ever had to endure in a game.
9. Life Is Strange: Before the Storm is BAD

I loved Life Is Strange when it first dropped, so I was beyond excited when they announced a prequel from Chloe’s perspective. But I really think they dropped the ball and they dropped it hard. But everyone else seems to adore this game! For me, this wasn’t a touch on the original. For a start, they dropped out one of the main mechanics of the first game, the time travel, which they then replaced with a much less interesting ‘Backtalk’ feature, which was then only used about twice throughout the game. Instead of interesting, developed characters reacting to genuinely dangerous or heartfelt situations, it felt to me like a bunch of one-dimensional teenagers who are edgy for the sake of being edgy. Chloe spends the majority of the game being a dick to her mother and bunking off class to spend time with Rachel, who she has literally known for like a day and their sudden relationship drops out of nowhere. Not that I didn’t enjoy the emotional moments of their relationship, it just didn’t feel like it stemmed from anywhere, unlike Max and Chloe from the first game. And the game’s attempts at villains were also rubbish compared to the first, with Damien (random scary knife guy who doesn’t really tie into the plot that much) and Eliot (who doesn’t appear for the whole game and suddenly goes full incel on Chloe when she breaks into Rachel’s house). Yeah I think you can tell I had some problems with this one.
8. Dishonored: Death of the Outsider was also a hot mess

I LOVE the Dishonored series. The first game and its DLCs are amazing, the second game was arguably even better. And then this happened. In this one, you play as Billie Lurk, a character I love, and Daud comes back, a character I also love. But both of them are incredibly badly written and it doesn’t feel like there’s any development to them or even much reason for them to do what they’re doing. This entry took the mystery surrounding the Outsider and basically did a big poo on it, giving us the revelation that he was apparently HUMAN this whole time. I think that was the nail in the coffin that made me sort of think this was a bit rubbish. While the combat and side missions were as brilliant as ever, the level designs felt less creative than other entries in the series and lacked variety or colour, all the side characters were entirely forgettable and to wrap it all up, they killed Daud offscreen. Out of nowhere, they just killed him, mentioned it offhand in a cutscene and that was that. If you like this game, fair enough, but it kind of baffles me that more people don’t see this in the game.
7. Mario Galaxy 2 is good. It’s just sort of good

Some people cite this as being one of the best 3D platformers of all time, and that’s fair enough, but I just kind of see this one as ‘good’. Sure, it has a good, satisfying control scheme for the most part, the level design is creative and the bosses and puzzles are pretty standard for a Mario title, but still enjoyable. However, sometimes, the floaty physics and weird knockback effect from jumping into walls led to quite a lot of unfair deaths, especially if I’d been punished for messing up already by losing a life, only to then immediately be punished again by falling into the void. Plus, I found Yoshi near impossible to control at some points with the motion controls. So yeah, this one is genuinely enjoyable, but I don’t think I’d personally put it with the best of all time.
6. I LOVE Dragon Quest IX TO DEATH

This is a game in a legendary franchise that consistently almost always see ranked at the very bottom of the pile in the series. But I really don’t understand how or why. Okay so your protagonist and party are basically silent and don’t have a lot of character, but I don’t see this as a reason to totally write off the game! The side characters, villains and story are all amazing and well-developed, the world is huge, colourful and interesting, the monsters are brilliantly creative and Dragon Quest’s signature lame sense of humour is gratefully carried through the whole game. The music is always brilliant and atmospheric and the bosses are just as memorable as each character you meet. What was everyone’s problem?? This is genuinely one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played and if you haven’t had a chance to pick it up, it is so, so worth it.
5. Sonic Adventure is a broken mess

So before I kick this one off, I’m not someone who hates Sonic and I’m not here to slate the whole franchise, but considering this game is often considered to be one of the best in the series, I thought it was definitely worth addressing. When I first played this, I literally couldn’t believe this was made in 1998, AFTER Mario 64 and yet it’s so broken! The physics and control scheme are totally wonky and hard to control, the unending amount of glitches make a fair amount of the stages almost unplayable, the voice acting and facial animation is cringey and oddly broken and yet, this was all on the Dreamcast. The most powerful console of the time. And I don’t think I even need to mention how boring some of the later stages get, with Big the Cat’s fishing section being the main offender. I can’t vouch for Adventure 2 as I haven’t had a chance to play yet, but I really hope it isn’t like this.
4. Dragon Age Origins is the best Dragon Age

Dragon Age has always been a popular RPG series, but I think it properly shot to fame once Inquisition dropped in 2014. And don’t get me wrong, I liked Inquisition! The world was colourful and expansive and the characters were fairly memorable, but I still think the best experience you can get is in the series’ first entry, Origins. While it’s pretty easy to see that it’s slightly dated considering it’s ten years old now, the best characters and story in the series I think is here. Each companion you recruit is varied and developed and the story wraps up brilliantly in the end with each companion and army you meet playing a different role in the final battle. Plus, I kind of can’t forgive Inquisition for making Leliana lose her sense of humour and making her kinda boring.
3. Oblivion is better than Skyrim

Okay so I’m not sure exactly how unpopular this is, but I just thought Oblivion was miles better than Skyrim ended up being. Just to clear it up, I still love Skyrim and I thought it built on the series’ combat system and variety of enemies really well and still provided an enjoyable experience. But Oblivion feels like more of an adventure you feel at home in. The story is dense and full of twists and turns. The soundtrack has some of the most atmospheric music I’ve ever heard, the world is full of bright colours, each city is vastly different and has its own lore and I found some of this to be absent from Skyrim. I’d go into more detail, but I think the simple fact is that Oblivion had so much more I liked than Skyrim.
2. I don’t think The Witcher III is all that amazing (in some regards)

This by no means says that I don’t like the game, because I do, but I think it has more flaws than people let on. Now, don’t get me wrong, a lot of the stuff people praise about this game is true, the quests are in-depth and masterfully crafted, the characters, especially Geralt, are extremely memorable. In fact, Geralt is one of my favourite game protagonists. But most of the problems I had were in terms of the gameplay. The combat, while fast-paced and satisfying, can sometimes feel a little finicky, so a lot of precision is needed. However, I felt that the world itself didn’t particularly interest me and the music is often ambient but outside of combat, isn’t anything special. Mostly though, the leveling system I found to be a bit wonky. I did absolutely everything I could in the first area of the game; all the side quests, treasure hunts, killed a whole bunch of monsters etc. And then I arrive in the second area and find I’m too underleveled to do literally anything. The majority of the quests have too high a level cap, a lot of the monsters kill me very quickly. And because the bulk of EXP farming is in the quests, I’m sort of stuck in an endless loop of constantly not being strong enough to do anything. On top of that, all my equipment keeps breaking and I’m finding that repair kits are extremely few and far between and that makes me even WEAKER. It’s something I’m gonna need to persevere with I think, but hey, this is just my experience with it.
1. Ocarina of Time, as amazing as it is, may have overstayed its welcome as best game of all time

I reckon this might be the most controversial, so it’s number 1. Let me preface this by saying I really like Ocarina and I agree that it was innovative for the RPG genre at the time. There’s a hell of a lot in this game that we have to thank for the games we have today. But considering how far the gaming industry has come since then and the sheer amount of high quality games we’ve been getting year after year, is still fair to call this the best game ever? When more recent games have taken what Ocarina started and built upon it? Games like Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption II, God of War all gave us expansive, beautiful worlds and a story you can really get stuck into. And all the time, more and more games of this caliber are coming out. So yes, of course Ocarina of Time deserves a place in the hall of fame, it was revolutionary and still holds up really well today! I just can’t help but think there have been plenty of games since then, as flawed as some of them may be, that have improved upon the formula tenfold since Ocarina’s release.

Okay now here’s a two vs two matchup, Ultraseven and Ultraman Jack vs Gigan and Megalon
Hi!
Wow this is definitely gonna be a test of my memory of the two ultra series but ill try my best lol
The two Ultras in question are actually much more than a match for Gigan and Megalon tbh (Also im gonna use Millennium Gigan here as youll soon see why Gigan needs the amp here)
But as usual, the Showa Ultras are always holding back for the sake of having dramatic fights as well as them always showing mercy to their opponents. However, I shall use some of the actual feats that the Ultras have displayed to give you an idea how strong they truly are in order to explain how I arrived at my conclusion
Ultraseven (1967)
Seven is very well known for his expertise in using the Ultra Willpower as well as the Eye Slugger, not to mention that he can combine both tactics to use in battle as well.
With his Ultra Willpower, he can literally toss opponents and negate any homing attacks and either redirect them at his enemies or simply just destroy them, and even if he dosent manage to do so, he has an ability called ‘Body Spark’, which repels any projectile attack.
His Emerium Beam is strong enough to literally vaporize enemies. But for stronger opponents where his Emerium Beam doesn’t even faze them, his Wide Shot (which I highly suspect is still suppressed) can still manage to vaporize all of the flesh off them, leaving only bones behind. 
Even so, his Eye Slugger is also so sharp that its able to cleanly slice an enemy in two like a knife through butter in one episode when the Emerium Beam also had no effect on the kaiju.
As for his physical capabilities:
He has enough strength to literally tear off appendages of kaiju as seen with Gyeron.
Has also managed to survive being ran over by the 70 000t Dinosaur tank multiple times
Shrugs off a beam that one shot Windom, a mech from alien gut’s spaceship
Not to mention he can literally manually recharge his energy due to him having special Ultra Protectors to absorb sunlight
The next few feats of power will exemplify how strong Seven truly is as in these battles were the stakes were very high, Seven shows a hint of his true power:
1. In the episode where he fought Crazygon, even though his Emerium Beam and Wide Shot were unable to damage him, his sheer speed after being propelled from a rocket launcher was literally able to one-shot him
(Note that in that final fight, Seven was already critically injured)
2. In the final arc, Seven was already severely low on energy due to his fights on Earth, he still manages to kill the final boss of his own series, Pandon, TWICE.
And in the second battle he still manages to use his ultra willpower to one shot reconstructed pandon 
(Note that in the second battle, Seven was even weaker than in the first round and yet he still can exert this much control over his Ultra Willpower, imagine his max control at perfect condition)
3. Fought Petero on the moon at sub zero temperature (Lets remember that most M78 Ultras are weak to cold) where Seven had to finish the fight fast, he absorbed the little amount of energy obtained from a nearby asteroid which collided on the moon to obliterate Petero with one wide shot
4. He bested Robot Ultraseven, his virtual equal without much difficulty
(As the creators of Robot Ultraseven analysed the fights Seven had, they engineered it to be supposedly as strong as Seven’s displayed fighting prowess (except the emerium beam iirc), but the fact that Seven still managed to best him supports the fact that Seven was holding back a lot in his previous fights prior to the encounter with Robot Ultraseven)
Current Ultraseven:
In Ultra Fight Orb, he was able to manhandle King Joe, when in 1967 he could virtually do nothing against it
In the Orb Movie, Seven’s eye slugger was able to cut through the Deavorick Cannon, the attack that sent Orb Trinity back, aside from its sheer force, this also says something about his reaction speed as well.
Seven was able to physically grapple with Deavorick along with Orb Trinity(whom stats is MONSTROUS as most of his stats are the highest ever recorded), does this means that Seven and by extension the current ultra brothers can be scaled to OT? Its debatable but that’s a question to be answered for another time.
Ultraman Jack (1971)
Considering that throughout his series, we see that he oftenly incorporates lifting his opponent and tossing them around into his fighting style so I think it’s fair to assume that Jack is physically stronger than Ultraman and Seven (Even if he isn’t, he’s arguably stronger than both of them overall as ill explain later)
Moreover, considerably more of Jack’s battles in his series involves him fighting two kaijus simultaneously, so he’s definitely no stranger to getting double teamed so taking on both Gigan and Megalon is no issue for him.
He could probably take Millennium Gigan with ease considering Jack literally tossed Black King (60 000t) way up into the air who weighs exactly the same as Millennium Gigan with seemingly no effort at all
This is further cemented when Jack picked and launched Builgamo easily as well who was 68 000t 
Not to mention that he lifted and tossed around Seagorath which weighed 52 000t (when his colour timer was flashing red no less)
Another point to note that Jack seems to oftenly use his vastly superior strength along with his speed in aerial battles with airborne enemies. He literally just accelerates towards an opponent and throws them off course mid flight with so much force that made a tanky airborne enemy like Terochilus hit the ground and died immediately upon impact, we see him do this very often (Note that it was shown to be unfazed by Jack’s Ultra Shot and Specium Ray previously)
Also a rather significant point to note that he transforms through pure ultra willpower without any henshin item, does that mean his Ultra Willpower is stronger than Ultras who require a henshin item to transform? This point is debatable but very convincing as we saw one instance of Jack possibly using his Ultra Willpower on such a level that we’ve never seen before, which was when he literally repelled a Tsunami that was stated to be ‘hundreds of feet tall’ created by Seagorath via his Ultra Barrier but u can argue that he either actually used his Ultra Willpower or ‘reinforced’ his Barrier with his Ultra Willpower
On the topic of Jack being pit against kaiju who could summon natural disasters, I remember that there were 2 more of such cases:
1. Created a Typhoon that was even stronger than Varricane’s which launched it into space
2. Defeated King Bockle who could summon Earthquakes on a whim
We can also assume that overall, jack also has a stronger beam potency that Ultraman and Seven as significantly more one shots occurred within his series
Not to mention that his Cinerama Shot was stated to be 10x stronger than Seven’s Wide Shot (Note that it wasn’t clarified whether its 10x stronger than the normal, uncharged Wide Shot or the Charged Wide Shot)
Jack also displayed strength at least on par with Ultraman and Seven as he was able to chop off the solid horns and literally tear of the arms off Paragon
As for his durability,
He is vulnerable to electricity but his Ultra Armor could tank more than the damage done by a nuclear missile in addition to being resistant to fire.
His head is also stated to be 2000x harder than iron. To put this in perspective,  Mechagodzilla’s Space titanium armor is 10x stronger than steel, steel is 2x stronger than iron, which makes Jack (1971) 100x tougher than Showa Mechagodzilla
So yeah, can you even imagine Gigan being able to tear through Mechagodzilla in the first place?
At this point if you don’t think Jack is OP yet, well he essentially becomes almost BROKEN after he receives his Ultra Bracelet from Seven.
You can see the entire list of abilities the Ultra Bracelet (Which is probably non-exhaustive tbh) has on Ultrawiki but ill highlight some significant ones:
1. For those kaiju that Jack can’t defeat with his already IMMENSE strength? 
Well the Ultra Bracelet one shots them with the Ultra Spark which can make a tough kaiju like Magnedon which could hold out against several billion volts of electricity explode in one shot
2. Jack was once frozen solid and mutilated, but Ultra Bracelet literally
a) Rejoined his mutilated pieces back together
b) Unfroze him
c) At literally NO COST AT ALL
3. Reflects projectile attacks with a higher potency than original
But you could say that jack’s physical attacks were as lethal as Ultra Spark as we saw Alien Zelan used the Ultra Bracelet against jack and made the Bracelet released hundreds of Ultra Sparks which Jack managed to parry a few before finally being overwhelmed
Jack also defeated a stronger variant of Zetton that Ultraman fought and lost against, this time being Zetton Gen 2 which Ultraman himself initially warned Jack to stay away from. But Jack went to fight Zetton anyways, while against  Alien Bat simultaneously nonetheless 
Also let’s not forget, Jack also literally defeated a planet eater that was Vaccumon (was stated to be infinite in size but yeah DOUBTS, but his planetary feats were undeniable) and the sword the Ultra Bracelet transformed into was used to kill it (This also says something about this particular sword the Ultra Bracelet transformed into)
Current Ultraman Jack
In Ultraman Zero the Chronicle when Zero and Jack were having a spar with their own respective Ultra Lances, Jack was able to position his Ultra Lance close to Zero’s chest, nearly impaling him just after Zero descended on him after the latter distracted him with his Ultra Willpower.
This shows that current Jack’s reaction speed is probably much faster than Zero’s flight speed which is Mach 7
In Ultra Fight Orb, Jack easily manhandled Gudon and Twintail with no difficulty at all when both of them forced Jack to retreat back in 1971
So tbh as far as Gigan and Megalon goes, theres not much they can do against Seven and Jack.
None of their attacks have enough firepower to rival even a nuclear missile
Jack is essentially immune to Megalon’s Napalm Bombs
Millennium Gigan’s Bladed Slicers wont work cause both ultras have their Ultra Willpower which may even cause the Bladed Slicers to work against Gigan instead (Assuming that the Ultra Willpower dosent make them explode in the first place)
Seven’s and probably Jack’s flight speed is more than twice as fast as Gigan’s and Megalon’s flight speed on Earth, and a battle in space would essentially be game over as Ultras’ flight speed in space is light speed.
The only 2 things I can see working for Megalon are that:
1. His punches can discharge electrical energy
2. His shell is as hard as diamond, which is 600x stronger than iron
But I haven’t even brought in the rest of the abilities of the Ultras like literally freezing them solid, paralysis ray, stop ray and whatnot.
Not to mention the fact that the amount of hax abilities that Ultras can use when there are more than 1 Ultra on the battlefield like the exponentially much powerful combo beams and attacks.
In addition, im mostly centering the argument around Ultraseven (1967) and Ultraman Jack (1971), current Seven and Jack would just take the W much, much faster.
So in conclusion, even if both kaiju were to double team either Seven or Jack, it would still be overkill.

1) So this is how Faith is doing as the leader…

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder who’s the boss… (maybe we should ask Abed.)
2) I don’t like seeing Faith hurt, but I do get a very sick (I admit it) satisfaction at seeing all these girls hurt and scared because they kicked Buffy out and they screwed everything up in the worst possible fashion. I know that by having Faith lead them into yet another trap the writers were trying to prove the point that what happened at the vineyard could’ve happened to anyone and that it wasn’t Buffy’s fault (Buffy will make this same point herself later on the episode.) Both Buffy and Faith were trying to do what they thought was best, yet it backfired. Shit happens yada yada yada. Yet I just can’t help but feel personally vindicated when I see Faith and the potentials fuck everything up so spectacularly.
On the other hand, not only was Buffy able to pull herself together after the group (and her friends! Her family!) kicked her out and made her feel like the worst piece of shit in the whole world, but she also managed to A) get the scythe and B) make Caleb nervous, which was a first. So yeah. #teamBuffy
3) So why exactly were the Scoobies looking for Buffy? I mean, didn’t they kick her out literally the day before? And now they’re suddenly worried about her or something? The only person who followed Buffy after they all kicked her out was Faith. Faith! Do you see how wrong/ironic that this? Do you see how painful it must’ve been for Buffy not to have NONE OF HER FRIENDS – not Xander, not Willow, not Giles, not even her own sister! – go after her to see if she was okay? To ask her where she was going or what she was going to do? The only person who showed any concern whatsoever about her was probably the only person she would’ve labeled a potential enemy. 
Damn you all, I’m still pissed off. I hate this. I hate having to feel this way about the characters I’ve loved for seven seasons in the FINAL EPISODES OF THE SHOW. It just feels so wrong, but I can’t help but HATE THEM. What the hell was this fucking writing choice? I hate it. I hate everything about it.
4) If I have to say something in favor of Kennedy is this, when shit hit the fan, she was the only one who wasn’t screaming like a moron and who was actually trying to fight off the Turok-Han. So yeah. The girl got spunk.
5) But she’s nothing compared to our designated BAMF.

11) Again, I get the same feeling with Xander. Like, did they all suddenly forget they had left Buffy alone and kicked her out of her own house? Xander is all like, “I don’t need you to protect me just because I lost an eye” but literally a day before he was telling her it was HER fault he’d lost it, and using that as a justification not only for removing her from her role as a leader but also TO KICK HER OUT OF HER OWN HOUSE. And now it’s just like nothing ever happened? How is that possible? How is literally no one apologizing to Buffy? And not only is he not apologizing, but Buffy is telling him that he’s her heart and the reason she’s still alive, which okay, it’s all kind of true, but he’s also the guy WHO BLAMED YOU FOR LOSING HIS EYE AND WHO KICKED YOU OUT OF YOUR OWN HOUSE THE DAY BEFORE?!
I didn’t know that End of Days could make me as angry as Empty Places but here I am.
We’re 14 minutes into the episode and still, no one has apologized to Buffy and they’re all pretending like they didn’t turn their backs on her and it’s pissing me off. I hate feeling this way in the episode prior to the series finale. This is not how a fan should be feeling right before the show ends!
12) Not only do I know what a glottal stop is but I’ve also learned how to pronounce it. Or at least I was able to pronounce it a few years ago. 
13) And hence the fate of Miss Kitty Fantastico was finally revealed…

This is something that had been a long time coming. Since day one, Faith had envied Buffy. Just like Buffy saw in Faith her road not taken, Faith saw in Buffy the life she could’ve had but didn’t. She envied it and she wanted it for herself. She literally tried to steal it away several times. So if she couldn’t have it, if it wasn’t meant for her, then she could take Buffy away from it, drive her to the dark side, where she lived. Every attempt was futile, even stealing Buffy’s body and literally taking her life. It only made her feel more undeserving, more inadequate, more unworthy. But every time she’d taken a shot at being the leader, it was by playing tricks, by taking what it wasn’t rightfully hers. This time around, she had somehow earned it. There was no foul play on her part. Others made the decision for her and gave her the role she’d craved for so long. And she finally understood that it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Yes, Buffy did have friends and people who looked up to her and cared about her. But when push comes to shove, when tough calls must be made, the Slayer is always alone. The weight of the world is only on her shoulders, and she can’t share the burden. It took four seasons but Faith finally got it. And she could finally let go of all the envy and jealousy.
18) I just love the fact that for the first time Buffy is the one who opens up to Spike. She’s always been the one who pretends there’s nothing between them and who skirts around her feelings and dismisses his. But not this time. And for me, it was enough that she acknowledged that it meant something, even if they – and we – don’t know exactly what that was.
BUFFY You're a dope.
SPIKE I'm a what?
BUFFY You're a dope. And a bonehead. And you're shirty.
SPIKE Have you gone completely carrot-top?
BUFFY Do you see this? This may actually help me fight my war. This might be the key to everything. And the reason I'm holding it is because of you. 20) Am I the only who thinks this speech is okay but like, the writers were trying too hard to give Anya her “Anya Speech Moment” of the season and it kind of feels a bit, I don’t know, forced?
ANYA Well...I guess I was...kinda new to bein' around humans before. But now I've... seen a lot more, gotten to know people... seen what they're capable of, and... I guess I just realized...how amazingly screwed-up they all are. I mean really, really screwed-up in a monumental fashion. And they have no purpose that unites them, so they just drift around, blundering through life until they die...which they...they know is coming, yet every single one of them is surprised when it happens to them. They're incapable of thinking about what they want beyond the moment. They kill each other, which is clearly insane. And yet, here's the thing. When it's something that really matters, they fight. I mean, they're lame morons for fighting, but they do. They never... never quit. So I guess I will keep fighting, too.

Okay, I get it, I get what you were trying to do, but it was so fucking obvious, it was so transparent. Like, I know most of the so-called metaphors in this show were not so subtle (think the fucking monster-penis in Doublemeat Palace, for instance.) But the feminist struggle in the slayer vs the council struggle was always something that I personally enjoyed. And this is how Joss’s brand of “feminism” began to crumble down, in my opinion. This is what a white dude who is a self-proclaimed feminist believes to be a Good feminist storyline, but it’s so clichéd and self-evident it's almost cringe-worthy. Like, you get a bunch of Evil Men quite literally raping a Poor Woman, who is faked Empowered (her powers were lent to her by the Evil Men and the source of her powers is Evil, Demonic in nature because  duh! she is a Woman)  so that they can Manipulate her and Use her for the benefit of the Patriarchy. But oh wait! This is a Feminist Show! So in spite of what the Evil Men who were supposedly the Powerful ones did, there always were These Great and Powerful Women behind it all, the True Guardians of the Slayer, This has been a Matriarchy all along, you see?! PLOT TWIST!
Yawn.
The worst part? I can imagine all the writers patting themselves on the back for writing such a groundbreaking and Feminist storyline and for sticking it to the Men.

Because I’m positive this is what former lovers do after not seeing each other in over a year, being currently emotionally unavailable, and facing the greatest evil of all. Suck face.

RE:169 quick thoughts before I go into rabbit hole of tg posts on tumbler (edited)
So I was expecting the scans to come out on Thursday but was surprised to see some fresh panels in the uta tag and FLIPPED.jpeg at my behavioural economics lecture. Honestly not the best place for getting a nosebleed xdd
Anyways here are some of hot takes I got from reading the chapter. More nuanced meta probably on its way. I read it on mangastream and I did screenshots there.
The chapter starts with the first part of Uta’s tattoo quote and ends with the second part, forming a sort of narrative framework to read it.
We jump straight into the fray, with contrasting shots of Yomo’s damn fine looking face and Uta’s there as well, clearly guided by very basic thinking and mostly intuitive, emotional impulses:

Like this is typical, stereotypical “unhinged” face people do in mangas. A mix of enthusiasm and bloodlust, it says this guy went “insane”. Ugh. Uta’s mental health warrants a LOT of unpacking nevertheless so let’s leave this face’ implications for later. 
We glimpse their fight styles then:

Uta is on the offensive, honestly his is such forceful, visceral way of attacking here - straight up fuck up your opponent with the sheer force of your blow. He is shown to be a lot more nuanced and deliberate in previous fights, steering clear from attacking and content with evading the blows, dealing some psychological damage afterwards. But that is Uta just half-assedly toying - clearly he doesn’t stop himself with Yomo. The reasons can be manifold - that’s how they’ve always done it; he’s so pumped, he stops thinking and loses himself in pure bloodlust; he’s in a serious crisis - this is my preferred angle.
Now his fighting style, besides the raw strength behind it, is also quick and agile. In a second Uta gets behind Yomo, and tries to strike through his body mid-air. His face looks like this:

Very unstable.
Uta’s pupils are incredibly large here - again, a visual reminder how little conscious control he might have in this situation. OR how vicious his intents are.
My impression is that when he’s led by such murderous motivation (whatever its composing parts), Uta moves intuitively, we don’t see him playing around or allowing to be struck. Here he has the initiative but Yomo can so far fend off or otherwise deal with his attacks.
I’m honestly so thirsty for Yomo in this chapter, just look at this fine motherfucker:

{I’m interjecting to thank my lord satan for my pan-shipping, slutty heart because now UtaRen became another ship I love. Add in some Itori and you have another one. This one just keeps on giving <3}
Also Uta is so messy here, my baby all playful like a rabid hyena.

Despite all the refinements older Uta keeps about himself (suave clothing, neat hair, designer mask studio, antiques in glass cases, chess), he didn’t seem to have done much growing up, emotionally. Donato comments on it like that:

You just gotta love the fact that for most of the manga Uta keeps the facade of actually being the least reckless of the ghouls. But I trust Donato on this, who seems to know Uta’s darker impulses fairly well. Possibly better than Yomo and that dude got his fair of beating from Uta too.
What got me interested is how Amon had commented how pointless Clowns endeavours were. Initially I thought it’s Donato who said it, but later on he tells Amon that he would soon understand...
Oh Amon looks fine AF too. Be still my slutty heart!
Furuta says something possibly pivotal for the incoming plot arc:

(IDK wtf this is, but if even Furuta comments on it as if he was both grossed out/scared, it must be important. Oh, he meets Kaneki too, no biggie. “That’s just freaky!!”, I love you Nimura)
Back to my boys, Yomo is getting beat up but mostly evades Uta’s attacks and looks more and more pissed. Uta just looks like a dumbass. Or rather as stupid as cats who torture smaller critters for fun and recreation do:

Also we get a glimpse of his kagune. It seems to be very elastic, easily changing shapes as Uta sees fit. It was just this gigantic mass of RC cells in the beginning panels, now it’s much more resembling the spider legs en masse that we remember from his fight with Juuzou:

But what is most important here, we finally get the first shot of Itori. She is wearing a mask in the beginning, and it’s important in context of what Uta will be saying shortly: edit: It’s Itori speaking, thoughts on that in a different post.

She’s an observer in that panel, very significantly voiceless, not shown to be nearly as amused as Nico here:

Uta’s Itori’s words are honestly a key to Clown’s philosophy and deserve a meta of its own. [In the beginning I thought these were Itori’s words, especially after I saw “Kanekichi” being mentioned; it’s how she had referred to Kaneki before.] - no wonder, it was my brain’s way to remind me I was far too concentrated on Uta to consider the awesomest queen Itori :/
Uta Itori says something very interesting here:

Obviously, if he were to be an OEK, first or the second one, that would be right up the alley. But even if not, it hints at very interesting possibilities. I want to see Ishida expand on it in some flashbacks. 
The most important words are coupled with shots of Itori slowly taking her mask off. It has a very dramatic effect.

Theres a heck ton to unpack here. Honestly I would never think Uta would look at his value system from that particular angle. Edit - and he wouldn’t because he is currently in the midst of a mayor meltdown. It’s Itori who actually bothers with explaining.
He She refers to the coldness of their existence as ghouls, of how senseless it is - like a vast, cold void stretching infintiely in front of them. 
Uta’s ways of searching for warmth are probably the only ones somebody as uprooted as him could come up with - he sees drawing blood, wounding (but also getting wounded - Uta seems to have a very laissez faire attitude to him perishing eventually as we remember from his talk with Donato).
According to Uta  Itori, Yomo is the warm one. For him her, it’s via bloodletting that he can get closer to taste it. Edit Uta def seconds that in the panels to come with his own actions
 I still think there’s some theatrics involved in this speech, as the next panel shows....

God, way to make your opponent unsuspecting of your next move Uta. 
And we get another important shot of Itori. She’s clearly positioned as somewhat stradling the line between Uta and Yomo but this series consistently shows her as being closer to Uta nevertheless.

Her eyes are shining so bright here, it’s clear she’s in deep thought and possibly a bit torn apart with what’s happening here. What Uta says clearly strikes a cord but her taking the mask off, idk it may signal some important differences between her and Uta’s worldview. That or it’s a sign she identifies with his words deeply. Edit ditto, these are her words and the scene took entirely different meaning and made me Love Itori, the first time since reading the series.
Honestly Uta is just beginning tho, as he has some creepy words about dreaming of the day where he would get his hands stained with Yomo’s blood. He actually left Yomo on the ground to have this mini speech properly. He’s posturing as far as my impressions go - Uta reverts to his younger persona, sans earlier sentiments of not wanting to cut his fun short by killing the only one ghoul who could match him somewhat. 
The most important thing in this chapter is what Yomo says next...

Here Uta is, going off about his strange blood kink and Yomo goes all shonen manga on him. But it’s not the same shonen posturing he did in previous chapter. We don’t see his eyes - we see Uta’s and that dude is honestly #shook. 
Naturally he reacts in ways only Ishida can think of. Honestly how Yomo’s words are literally drowned out by Uta’s uncontrollable and histerical laughter is such a masterful move:

This is the guy who dug up Ren from the ground because he was his “friend”. Now he’s just a mouth apparently.
Idk but this seems like the key panel for analyzing Uta from psychological angle. This dude most pronounced feature is his mouth which is nothing like human’s or ghoul alike. It’s like he’s truly the chaotic trickster god with none of the sentiments he was hinted to possess.
I was talking with @gaiajulz and I love how she pointed out that it seems like Uta is actually drowning out Yomo’s heartfelt words and he isn’t even fully aware he’s doing it. With Uta’s firm worldview, he’d rather go full crisis-mode instead of acknowledging how vulnerable and in need of closeness he is.

Honestly Uta is soo Washuu-like in this panel, like Furuta’s older brother or something. First screech like a  Cthulu monster and then do a little happy dance!
What’s important is how Uta links what he sees as Yomo’s nivete with his emotional honesty and lack of any hidden agendas. Yomo is pure and good and this is why he is naive enough to trust a world like this. Uta saw so many sides to it, he literally sees no other option than to play the fool, including fooling around with one of the precious few of potentially close people in his life.
I also think he kind of looks like crying? From laughing so hard maybe. 
The chapter ends with my baby going full kakuja (predictably it’s his shifty face that’s the most inhuman part here, just a mass of flesh) and this flirty words:

Renji seems so shocked, it’s possible he had never seen this form. Either way he’s speechless.
And Uta’s philosophy is hinted at again - he’s willing to trample his friend just to feel anything. 
What we are dearly in need of is some good meta on Uta’s mental health, how his values feature into it and how his own actions contribute to it unraveling. Obviously such speculations are about as scientific as psych profiling but I feel it would be very important to try and understand this character better.
And boy, is there a lot to unpack here... 
Edit - crossed the parts where it’s suggested it’s Uta who summarizes Clown’s philosophy. It’s Itori and I don’t get my brain could hint at the discrepancies in my own thinking but not make the definite link. Gotta love that sweet ADHD folks.

theres a meme of 'ask someone whos not in the fandom to interpret whats going on in this picture' but you know i think random ppl would identify this situation 100% correctly +- who Hinata is to Yukki. this anime is a cultural icon "Aren't you Yukiteru's girlfriend? Hinata and Yukki are both tied up so I'm not sure what they can do together behind Yuno's back but I know a foreshadowing shot when I see one for all that this anime keeps genuinely surprising me with twists, it does take care to make the events easy to follow, and I like that this is Quality Storytelling

ok so this is gunna be an essay lmao but im replaying the witcher 3 for the ladies and im currently playing through the quests that made me stop playing it the first time due to their fucking disgusting treatment of women handled in a downright distributing way (the murdered naked women strung up and all the women naked and gored in the whoreson junior quest) and somethings hit me that i picked up on before but only now have i really realised it? and that is that almost every woman in this game especially those who are portrayed as particularly strong willed and powerful and know it are ‘taken down a peg’ usually in the form of violence against them by men. philippa one of the truly powerful women in the series had her eyes gouged out by radovid in the previous game (correct me if im wrong but i also believe the player sees this happen?) and is then tricked into owl form by a bitter former lover, who traps her in dimeritium after which shes passed around as a pet between various men. triss has her fingernails ripped out in a quest that hinges on her being tortured and places a disturbing emphasis on her continually heard screaming. priscilla who is (more than) dandelions equal, is subject of a brutal and horrific attack by a serial killer who had a past penchant for torturing women (also worth mentioning that her pain seems to be for the sole purpose of making dandelion realise his love for her and settle down) while dandelion, who has previously been locked up in prison by the sadistic witch hunter menge is never shown baring ANY of the signs of his imprisonment to the extent that when rescued he looks identical to his usual preened, finery wearing self, meanwhile the women imprisoned throughout the game by the witch hunters are stripped and visibly brutally injured.) Whats more what should have been an awful experience for dandelion seems to have been of little inconvenience and is literally never mentioned again. 
The lodge the only organisation of true female power in the witcher universe was massacred before the events of the game and its sorceresses face varying degrees of horrifying fates: margarita and sile are locked in the witch hunters prison, magarita being ‘saved for last’ in the burings having watched all of her pupils go to the stake before her. sile a powerful player in the witcher 2 (who geralt can send to her death by boobytrapping a megascope in the previous game) is seen stripped and broken, bruised and bloody in an outfit that exposes her navel. fringilla is locked up by emhyr chained in dimeritium chains which are said to be very unpleasant for mages to wear, and is set to be executed before being freed. Keira Metz if allowed to follow her own wim ends up either dead by geralts own hand or burned on a stake by radovid, (and of course if this option is taken geralt gets a nice cutscene showcasing her charred corpse). Ves seemingly the only female soldier in the entirety of the land that isnt skellig is scolded something fierce by roche with no option to defend her (morally right) actions and is shouted at by a man for the impractical and ridiculous outfit the male developers put her in. Even ciri the most powerful character in this game and it’s universe who has been through hell and back is often portrayed as a petulant teenager who has to be reigned in by both geralt and avallac'h - a man who she apparently trusts completely and bares little ill will for despite the fact he imprisoned her in his own foreign land and forbid her to leave until she bore his king a child.
 Even the minor female characters are not exempt. Rosa var attre is shot down by Geralt and blamed/scolded for being "why people hate nilfgaardians" after two men tried to attack HER and she said shed have them punished (bear in mind it's also implied she's a very young woman.) One of the frequently heard npc lines is from peasant men and is clearly intended to be ‘funny’: “see you're a man well travelled so tell me should i beat me wench once a week or oftener?” 
One of the worst instances in the game however is the Bloody Baron Questline. Anna, who we find out was frequently beaten by her fuckwad of a husband the baron - to the point she had a fucking miscarriage and was so desperate to escape him she made a pact with some very dangerous crones - is treated disgustingly by this quest. Her husband we find out was absent fighting for years and returned to find his wife had had an affair with a friend of his and was leaving him. He then proceeded to kill her lover in front of her and feed him to the dogs, continually beating her for years after. and and yet the dialogue clearly indicates we are meant to feel sympathy for HIM because he suddenly feels bad despite the fact theres no evidence hes changed at all burning down his stables in a fit of rage with the horses and stablemaster still inside. (His men we also first run into rampaging a village and trying to hunt out the hidden women so they can rape them.) While he is given the luxury of explaining his “side” we are supposed to soak up the idea that it’s not entirely  his fault because she taunted him and fought back verbally after as he puts it “losing the desire to live.” Anna meanwhile is shown in service to the crones who have aged her and also robbed her of her sanity, therefore unable to give her accounts of the story. The game even goes as far to equate her as being deserving of him because she didnt take his treatment silently and having an affair is clearly the equal of murdering the love of someones life in front of them and subjecting them to years of verbal and physcial abuse to the point of miscarriage.
Meanwhile even the truly evil men in this game get a quick death at worst, and while characters like radovid and menge can be taken down by the women theyve hurt, their quick and clean deaths are far from on par with the humiliating and extensive suffering the women of this game are subject to.

Face/Off (1997)

Madman bomber Nicolas Cage stole John Travoltas dead sons life. So gloomy FBI agent Travolta steals Cages face. When Cage steals his face and his wife and freedom John Woos Face/Off becomes the biggest, wackiest and most operatic summer blockbuster in history, a gonzo combustion that flings everything from pigeons to peaches at the screen.
Hong Kong cineastes might applaud a script with roots in the ancient Sichuan opera genre Bian Lian, where performers swap masks like magic. Popcorn-munchers, of which I am front row center, are here to watch whack job Cage and soulful Travolta, two actors who love to go full-ham, play each other and go deep inside their iconographies. Call it hamception. Or just call it a crazy swing that hits a home run as Cavolta and Trage battling it out in a warehouse, a speedboat and, of course, a church. As Cage-as-Travolta gloats to Travolta-as-Cage, Isnt this religious? The eternal battle between good and evil, saint and sinners but youre still not having any fun! Maybe hes not, but we sure are. Bravo, bravo. AN
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Theres been an increasing sense of desperation clinging to the majority of roles picked by Tom Cruise in recent years. Outside of the still shockingly entertaining Mission: Impossible series, he was miscast in the barely serviceable Jack Reacher and its maddeningly unnecessary sequel, his awards-aiming American Made was throwaway and his franchise-starting The Mummy was a franchise-killer. But four summers ago, he picked the right horse just maybe at the wrong time.
Because despite how deliriously fun Edge of Tomorrow was in the summer of 2014, audiences didnt show the requisite enthusiasm. It was a moderate success (enough to warrant a long-gestating sequel) but it should have packed them in, its combination of charm, invention and sheer thrills making it one of the most objectively successful blockbuster experiences in memory. The nifty plot device (Cruise must relive a day of dying while battling aliens over and over again) allowed for some dark gallows humor and a frenetic pace that kept us all giddily on edge while it also contained a dazzling action star turn from Emily Blunt whose fearless Full Metal Bitch wrestled the film away from Cruise. Blame its relative failure on the bland title? Cruise fatigue? Blockbuster over-saturation? Then find a digital copy to watch and rewatch and repeat. BL
Back to the Future (1985)

Back to the Future very nearly wasnt a summer blockbuster. The reshoots required after Eric Stoltz was booted off, then the fact Michael J Foxs Family Ties commitments meant he could only shoot at night all meant filming didnt wrap until late April. Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg duly pencilled in an August / September release.
But then people started seeing it. Test scores were off the scale. Said producer Frank Marshall: Id never seen a preview like that. The audience went up to the ceiling. So they bagsied the best spot the year had to offer 3 July hired a squad of sound editors to work round the clock and two print editors with instructions to get properly choppy. They did, and those big trims tightened yet further one of the tautest screenplays (by Bob Gale) cinema has ever seen. The only bit of fat they left was the Johnny B Goode scene: sure, it didnt advance the story, but the kids at those test screenings knew we were gonna love it. Back to the Future is a pure shot of summer cinema: grand, ambitious, insanely entertaining. Deadpool, Avengers, take note: a blockbuster can be smart as hell so long as it wears it lightly. In the end, by the way, the film spent 11 weeks at number 1 at the US box office. Thats essentially the whole summer. CS
Teminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

The first film I ever saw at the cinema was The Rocketeer. We drove into Bradford city centre, bought our tickets at the Odeon and sat through the 1991 tale which followed the fortunes of a stunt pilot, a rocket pack and a Nazi agent played by Timothy Dalton who sounded like he was from Bury rather than Berlin. The way into the multiplex there was a huge poster for Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Arnie sat on a Harley with a shotgun cocked and ready. My dad was a huge fan of the original but he still couldnt swing taking a seven-year-old to see it. It wasnt until I borrowed a VHS copy that I finally got to see what was behind that image. Skynet, dipshits, T-1000s, a nuclear holocaust and a motorbike chases on the LA river.
Blockbusters dont usually have that edge: theres a more brazen mainstream appeal. But Judgment Day was and still is an exception. It did huge numbers at the box office (more than $500m), was a rare sequel that was arguably better than the original and introduced really odd bits of Spanish idiom into the Bradford schoolyard lexicon. I probably would have been scarred for life watching it as a seven-year-old, but as a teenager it gave me a story I doubt Ill ever get tired of revisiting. LB
The Dark Knight (2008)

The summer of 2008 was a busy one: Barack Obama emerged from a contentious democratic primary to become the first ever black presidential nominee of a major party. The dam fortifying the entire global financial system was about to burst. China hosted its first ever Summer Olympics. But somehow, and not exactly to my credit, what I remember most from that summer is the uncanny, ridiculously over-the-top publicity blitzkrieg that preceded the release of The Dark Knight, which has since emerged as not just an all-time great summer blockbuster, but an all-time great American film, period.
There were faux-political billboards that read I believe in Harvey Dent; a weirdly nondescript website of the same name; Joker playing cards dispersed throughout comic book stores, which led fans to another website where the DA was defaced with clown makeup. Dentmobiles, Gotham City voter registration cards, a pop-up local news channel: the marketing campaign might have seemed excessive had the movie not so convincingly topped it. Ten years later, as films like Deadpool and Avengers: Infinity War try to reach those same heights of virality, The Dark Knight remains the measuring stick by which every superhero movie, and superhero villain, is measured. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

In many ways, Fury Road is summer: arid, scorching, bright enough to be squinted at. The driving force behind all the high-impact driving is scarcity of water, the essence of life in a desert where death practically rises up from the burning sand. Even in the air-conditioned comfort of a multiplex auditorium in Washington DCs Chinatown, watching George Millers psychotic motor opera left this critic sweaty and parched. My world is fire and blood, warns the weary Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) in the scripts opening lines. Staggering out of a theater into the oppressive rays of the sun, it sure can feel that way.
Millers masterpiece fits into the summer blockbuster canon in a less literal capacity as well, striking its ideal balance of dazzling technical spectacle and massively-scaled emotional catharsis. There was plenty of breathless praise to go around upon this films 2015 release, much of it for the feats of practical-effects daring, but the hysterical extremes of feeling cemented its status as a modern classic. I cant deny that Ive watched the polecat sequence upwards of a dozen times, but Millers film truly comes alive in Furiosas howl of desperation, and in Maxs noble disappearance into the throng. CB
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Its the music, its the giant boulder, its the Old Testament mysticism, its the whip, its the Cairo Swordsman, its Harrison Fords crooked smile, its the bad dates, its Karen Allen drinking a sherpa under the table, its the melted faces and exploding heads. Its all these things plus having the good fortune of seeing this at the cinema at a very young age, therefore watching most of it through my terrified fingers. The modern blockbuster as we know it was created by Steven Spielberg with Jaws and George Lucas with Star Wars, so the hype was unmatched when the two collaborated in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark. As a kid I had no idea this was a loving homage to cliffhanger serials from the 30s and 40s, I took it as pure adventure. The seven-and-a-half minute desert truck chase (I dont know, Im making thus up as I go) is probably the best action sequence in all of cinema (John Woos Hard Boiled does not have a horse, sorry), but watching as an adult one notices a lot of sophisticated humor, too. (Indy being too exhausted to make love to Marion, for example, is something that didnt connect when I was six.)
Its strange to think I watched these cartoon Nazis on VHS with my grandparents who had escaped the Holocaust, and no one benefits when you do the math to figure out how young Marion was when, as Indy puts it, you knew what you were doing. But for thrills, laughs and propulsive camerawork (though a little mild Orientalism), nothing tops this one. JH
Independence Day (1996)

Short of actually calling their film Summer Blockbuster, rarely can a films height-of-summer release date been so central to a films raison detre. This being the mid-90s, when po-mo and self-referentiality was all the rage, brazenly hooking your tentpole film to 4 July was seen as a pretty smart idea.
Fortunately, all the ducks did line up in a row for ID4: a game-changing performance from Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum at (arguably) his funniest, a rousingly Clintoneque president in Bill Pullman and most importantly in that run-up to the millennium physical destruction on a gigantic scale. Much comment at the time was expended on the laser obliteration of the White House (an early shot from the Tea Party/Maga crowd?), but I personally cherish director Roland Emmerichs signature move of detonating cars in somersault formation. Like many other huge-budget films then and since, Independence Day was basically a tooled-up retread of cheap-as-chips format of earlier decades though who these days would roll such expensive dice on what is essentially an original script, with no comic book or toy branding as a forerunner? We shall never see its like again. AP
Aliens (1986)

An Aliens summer is one for moviegoers who prefer to sit in in darkened rooms when the sun is shining; the brutal confines of the fiery power plant make an excellent subliminal ad for air conditioning. In 1986, James Cameron took Ridley Scotts elegant, iconic horror template and turned it into an all-out action blockbuster, forcing Ripley once again to face down her nemeses in a breathless fug of claustrophobia, sweat and fear. Its relentlessly stressful and unbelievably thrilling.
I first saw Aliens many years after its initial release. Owing to its sizeable and long-lasting legacy, it was at once immediately familiar, yet also brisk and brutally fresh. I understood that it was a classic, but I wasnt prepared for just how good it is, for the pitch-perfect management of tension, the pace that never really lets up, the emotional pull. The maternal undertow of Ripleys protection of Newt, and the alien mirror of that, adds a level of heart unusual in most blockbusters, and her frustration at being a woman whose authority must be earned again and again, and then proven again and again, remains grimly relevant, 30 years on. Its also a total blast. Now get away from her, you bitch. RN
Jaws (1975)

It is the great summer blockbuster ancestor the film that in 1975 more or less invented the concept of the event movie. And unlike all those other summer blockbusters, Steven Spielbergs Jaws is actually about the summer; it is explicitly about the institution of the summer vacation, into which the movie was being sold as part of the seasonal entertainment. It is about the sun, the sand, the beach, the ocean and the entirely justified fear of being eaten alive by an enormous shark with the appetite of a serial killer and the cunning of a U-boat commander. And more than that: it is about that most contemporary of political phenomena: the coverup, the town authorities at a seaside resort putting vacationers at risk by not warning them about the shark. The Jaws mayor has become comic shorthand for the craven and pusillanimous politician.
A blockbuster nowadays means spectacular digital effects, but this film is from an analogue world. It bust the block through brilliant film-making and an inspired score from John Williams, summoning up the shark with a simple two-note theme which became the most famous musical expression of evil since Bernard Herrmanns shrieking violin stabs in Psycho took the place of actual knife-slashing. I still remember the excitement of the summer of 1975, and the queues around the block at the Empire, in Watford, round the corner from the football ground. The inspired brevity of the title meant the word was repeated over and over again to fill the marquee display: JAWS JAWS JAWS as if they were screaming it! PB

huh its episode 10 already man this anime is so short is it flashback time yet?

seriously tho Saitama's superpower is NOT superstrength, that's just now how physics works I think he has sped up perception, and I suspect he had that to a degree even before he started his training, judging from how easily he managed to take on the crab guy, if not all of it but what his strength training gave him (awakened in him?) was basically reality warping no wonder he's bored: he ACTUALLY REALLY doesn't have to put any kind of effort into his punches, as it's not his physical strength that's doing any work there, it's literally reality bending to accomodate him that has got to suck reality warping ennui I love my egg son
I love how all of these monsters demand acknowledgement and don't just try and step on pesky human distractions that ignore them
