read in 2024: seven days in june by tia williams
“One thing,” she whispered, her lips by his jaw. She didn’t want anyone to overhear. “Before I forget.” “What’s that?” “Stop writing about me.” [...] In a voice both raspy and low, and so, so familiar, Shane said, “You first.”

Best Books Read in January 2023
I was incredibly lucky this year to read some absolutely amazing books and while I will probably do a top five of the year, there are so many good book I would be skipping over that I am going to try and make a post for the top 3-5 I read each month (it was a big reading year lol)
This post will cover January, which kicked everything off with a bang!!
Kindred by Octavia Butler
This was my first Octavia Butler book and it blew my mind. It is about a woman from the 1970s who travels to the 1800s, on the plantation of her ancestors. A difficult and rewarding read that commands respect and asks harrowing questions.
Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn
The sequel to Legendborn that makes me remember how much I love these big, epic YA fantasies. Deonn creates a loveable found family with vibrant dynamics that I crave more content for. Her commentary on grief and institutional racism are eye opening and heartbreaking. A worthy sequel that has me begging for the third!
Sisters of the Neversea by Cynthia Leitich Smith
I have come to love response literature, and this book is a prime example of using a secondary text to analyze the original within a novel. The way Smith approaches the sexism and racism of Peter Pan is really powerful. Truly an example of how middle grade books can be just as smart as adult books.
Honorable Mentions:
Seven Days in June by Tia Williams
A romance between two writers that subverts many tropes. Some of the best chemistry I have seen on page!!
Sorry, Bro by Taleen Voskuni
I've never read a book with an Armenian protagonist and so this was very special to me for that reason.

Book rec: A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams
This much anticipated book release was indeed worth the wait. Tia Williams has quickly become one of my favorite authors due to her in-depth, sultry storytelling.
Tumblr media
I had a very hard time putting this novel down and taking breaks once I got to about the midpoint of the story. The premise of the story is that main character, Ricki Wilde, has stepped out of her family's shadow and is trying to pursue her dreams in Harlem, New York. Once she begins working toward this, she meets a mystery man that she feels an irresistible urge to be near. Their love story begins to unfold in an extremely bizarre way.
This novel is not only a romance, but it is filled with historical mentions of landmarks, celebrities, and music. The historical parts of the book are just as captivating as the romance.
Tia Williams creates a journey through Ricki that shows stepping out into the unknown can be terrifying, but can also end in a lovely fate.
One of the best quotes from the book:
To me, love is like listening to an album. Some people skip to their favorite songs and ignore the rest. Other people listen to the entire album over and over until it's familiar and cherished and they know every note by heart. That's how Dr. Bennett and I loved each other. He was music I could listen to forever.

Seven Days in June by Tia Williams
@tiawilliamswrites
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Eva Mercy is a single mom and bestselling erotic author, who battles an invisible disease. Shane Hall is an award-winning author known for being a recluse. So when Shane shows up unannounced in NYC at a Black literary event where Eva is at everyone is shocked, but not as much as Eva herself. No one knows Shane and Eva spent a wild week madly in love twenty years earlier, and since then they have been secretly writing to each other in their books. Will this be the chance they have been waiting for to reconnect and rekindle the spark from their past? Or will the traumas that haunt them be too hard to overcome while reliving those seven days in June?
The emotional roller coaster this book put me through😩 I cried, laughed, sweated, screamed! It’s no surprise that I really enjoyed this book because I have only heard great things. Williams tackles themes like mental health, living with chronic illness, single parenthood, family issues/generational trauma, racism/systemic racism (and more!)!! The way she effortlessly sows these topics into this book is amazing and really helps you connect to the characters and identify with them! The romance and banter between Shane and Eva is *chef’s kiss* and her daughter Audre is hilarious. I’m not a huge fan of second chance romance trope but this was done perfectly, and the audiobook was great!!
Read if you love:
