Part 1
Happy to have spent a few days in famous Karuizawa recently. Not only is it a “hot” summer vacay spot in the Japanese Alps but  “Life” gave me an unexpected and surprising invite to a place where I encountered a cosmic connection with someone important from my past.
Let me briefly recap it for you.
Recently, my wife Chieko and I were siting around at home, sweat pouring off us from another scorching Japanese summer day with only only one thing on our mind — the Japanese say “hishochi” (escape from a hot place”).
I  don’t really know why but we settled on “escaping” to far off Karuizawa, which in my mind is nothing but a summer haven for the carefree famous.  I couldn’t conjure- up  how I would enjoy “kicking back” in a place that caters to especially the Tokyo elites, highfalutins and Japan’s royals.
Only when my wife promised we would stick to “chilling-out” in Japan’s beautiful and refreshing mountain atmosphere so rich in the negative-ions you can’t help but get high on — did I say ok.
Part 2
The road trip from our home in central western Japan to Karuizawa was a beautiful drive, especially through the mountain sights of Nagano. It took about 6 hours and over 500 kms.
On our first night in Karuizawa, our hope to get a table at one the premiere French restaurants turned out to be impossible. Couldn’t even snag two seats at our second, third or fourth choices along Kyu Karuizawa’s trendy main street lined with many enticing restaurants. There was nothing to do but try our luck at finding an eatery a bit out of town.
By this time it was close to 9 p.m. and last kitchen call, so we jammed on the brakes at the first Italian restaurant we spotted with lots of cars parked in front…scurried to the front door…but couldn’t get in because a little a note to the door said the restaurant was closed for a private party.
We deliberated on whether to pack it in for hotel room service or keep trying. Then a noticed another Italian restaurant right across the street, their lights still on but only 1 car parked outside — usually a bad omen. For some reason though, we decided to take our chances and slowly walked in.
It turned out to be a brilliant move.
Part 3
We were greeted by a smiling hostess-waitress who led us into a small retro-styled empty dining room with a questionable “cool” factor. We quickly checked the menu and ordered the pizza  special…because pizza makes everything better for me,
While eating our pizza our waitress stopped by and politely asked what seemed to me an absurdly curious question at the time, regarding the name Zildjian, which was embroidered in gold lettering on the baseball cap I was wearing.
I told her it was a famous cymbal company and one of the cymbals I use in my drum kit as a rock drummer,
Somehow that triggered her to say  “Do you know that John Lennon was one of Karuizawa’s most famous people?”
Completed taken by surprise, I simultaneously continued to listen to her story while making a  frantic fact check on Wikipedia. She was right! — John Lennon and Yoko Ono and their son Sean spent the last 4 summers of John’s life in Karuizawa, before he was tragically killed in New York City on Dec 8, 1980.
I am a long term resident of Japan but John Lennon’s Karuizawa period was under my radar.
As my wife will tell you, I sat there stunned at that news. I felt a deep sense of historical nostalgia about my own John Lennon experience. My mind was flooded by the stirring memories of the day over 50 years ago when I was a teenager and hardcore Beatlemaniac and succeeded in sneaking in to John and Yoko’s “Bed-in for Peace” at Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Not only did I see my idol John Lennon and take some snaps of the two in bed, but I got to speak to him. Everyday I look at the photos I took of John and Yoko that are hanging in my drum room.
Next, my head exploded when our waitress revealed John’s favorite cafe was located in the nearby forest…and is still in business.
As we started driving back to our hotel, I asked myself  “Why did we end up at this restaurant?
Part 4
Next morning’s first priority was to check out Cafe Rizanbou, where John Lennon and Yoko were regulars during their summer stays in Karuizawa.
After a quick drive,  we found the place, a bit off the beaten track from downtown Kyu Karuizawa and the Manpei Hotel, where the Lennons stayed.
It’s easy to see what Lennon and family found so endearing about the place. —  it looks the same as it did over 40 years ago —  a large rustic wooden cabin nestled in a forest with luscious greenery all around— such an enchanting and magical space that it swept John Lennon away!
While not a memorial like Strawberry Fields in Central Park in New York City, Cafe Rizanbou has become a place of secular pilgrimage for John Lennon worshippers and fans from all over the world.
There are no tables to sit at inside the main room of the cafe…only tables with all kinds of cafe merch for sale and lots of Lennon memorabilia, especially photos of John and Yoko’s life in Karuizawa, covering the walls. (I think I heard Beatle’s music playing softly in the background.) I took my time inspecting all the photos and posters and art that makes up this homage to John Lennon, and was really struck by how happy John and Yoko looked together during this period of their life. (Sadly the pictures of John and Yoko pleasantly idling on their summer vacation here in Karuizawa in 1979 are the last photos of the two of them taken in Japan).
Next, we walked out onto the adjoining veranda and sat down at the end table, which we were told was the world famous rocker’s favorite. The young man working there (a relative of the original owner who befriended the Lennons and is still around) recommended ordering John Lennon’s favorite drink — a tall glass of blueberry juice. How could we resist that pitch!
I took a long slow, deep breadth,  started sipping on that glass of blueberry juice, and my mind zoomed way back in time to recall my incredible personal  experience meeting John Lennon at his  “Bed-in for Peace” back in ’69. I remember that year was a horrible time for the global legion of fanatical Beatlemaniacs, (myself included), suffering from the break-up of the Beatles, the world’s greatest band. And we were furious at the mysterious Japanese woman we blamed for driving a stake in the heart of the Beatles. When I heard John and Yoko were in Montreal I somehow had to get in to see them and say to her how could she do it!!!
As soon as I walked into their room — suite 1742 — I felt the vibe that everyone inside was so ecstatic to be there in the presence of John and Yoko and the euphoria  overcame me. Telling myself to calm down, I tried to take some photographs but I was too far behind the throng of well-wishers surrounding the couple’s bed. I knew I needed to get closer and lucky for me the crowd started to thin out and soon only a handful of people were left lingering in the room.
I thought I was losing my mind when I heard John’s unmistakable voice call out to me. “Hey did you get some good shots?” I confess I was speechless. He beckoned me over to his side of the bed. In that moment, with my heart pounding, he told me stuff that made me come to the realization of just how kind and deep a thinker he was.
You probably would like to know what he said to me but i’ve kept it personal all these years. Let’s just say his words have been like a guiding light for me.
As for Yoko, over the years I decided it was best to let go my feelings for what she did or didn’t do to the Beatles. John Lennon went on to become a great solo artist  and inspired so many of us as a symbol of the peace movement. And it was also obvious, he truly found his bliss with Yoko.
So like Beatle George Harrison’s song says  —“all things must pass.”
 Part 5
When we got home I pondered if it was my kismet and karma that led me to Karuizawa or was it just a fortunate stroke of serendipity.
I started to sing one of my favorite Lennon (Lennon-McCartney) songs.
“I am the egg man
they are the egg men
I am the walrus,
goo goo g’joob”

Day Sixteen - Last Day in Tokyo and Home

22nd November 2022
Tokyo and Home
Our last day in Japan and we still have so much to do. We checked out of our accommodation and went straight for Akihabara and Tokyo Skytree.
Super Potato has all the best, nostalgic video games and memorabilia. It’s almost a museum at the same time it’s a shop, and on the top floor — a retro arcade with a snack shop. I could spend HOURS in there looking at all the second hand games for every console. I bought some Kirby stuff and candy. Then we made our way to the Skytree.
I managed to find another tomato ramen place but it wasn’t exactly the same - which makes me think it’s a franchise and they could all be different. Maybe we got lucky! It was still great though.
At sky tree we went up to the top to see all of Tokyo. Not only do they have another Pokémon centre there but also a Kirby cafe. I really wanted to go but they were booked out.
We had to bust it back to the airport for our flight and this is the worst part.
The airport closed all their shops and restaurants at 5pm and there was one open, but the line was too long for it to even be worthy. I wanted for 45 mins and got to the front to be told they were closing and my food will still be 30 mins and we might not make our flight… so I had to wait and have food from the plane. Horrible. Seriously. I hope they sorted that out now!!
Aside from some small things, which I’m sure they can fix soon.
TRAVEL IS BACK BABY IG post: "Last Day in Tokyo 😭🍜
Maybe I should just post all the food that I wanted to eat today because it turned out that we missed dinner because the airport closed all its restaurants before we got there. We lined up for the only place for almost half an hour and we’re told that most of the food was sold out, last order was in 4 minutes and it could take more than 30mins to make a hot dog.
I dunno man.
Anyway. Starbucks for breakfast. Then we found another Tomato Ramen (so gooood! I’m going to try and recreate it next week!) and had the cheesy dumplings again too. Ben had Orange Chicken so he was happy.
Then it was just plane food 🙃🙃
Until next time Japan. ✌️" "
After (more than) two weeks (not including travel days) abroad, today we make our way home. But first — back to Tokyo to do some things we didn’t get a chance to.
First up, Akihabara to go to Super Potato. A retro game store. 4 floors of nostalgia and video games. It’s so much fun to see!
Then we headed to Tokyo Skytree. The “second tallest building in the world”. Apparently. It’s pretty bloody tall, I’ll give them that! We had issues with the airport transfer… even though it said to buy tickets on the bus… we apparently needed to make a reservation more than a day in advance. So, we ended up having to catch a taxi to the airport … then when we got to Haneda airport. Nothing was open. No restaurants or shops. It was only 7pm. I was so confused and hungry.
I guess travel isn’t back to what it used to be, but it was still so good to be able to have an adventure again. ✈️"

tokyo tohoku trip - day 6.
back in tokyo after a 5 days trip up north, i wanted a more relaxing day to just relax and chill, hence this day would revolve around exploring my friend’s neighborhood - ningyocho. this neighbourhood is super interesting and there’s a lot to explore with a lot of good food too.
we started the day by visiting a nearby coffee place - kissako kaisenken 喫茶去 快生軒, this is a very traditional retro style place, and for some reason they don’t allow photos in the store. i had the cheesy toast with iced coffee, very simple and light breakfast. toast is very fluffy so it’s really nice. after that, we visited a popular meat store - ningyocho imahan 人形町今半 to get the signature sukiyaki croquette, the meat inside is very soft and flavorful, it’s an enjoyable and satisfying snack to have. we also bought pudding from a dessert store before heading home.
at home, my friend has invited a kimono expert friend to help us put on kimono so that we can look pretty while exploring the neighborhood for the day. the process is quite fun, she is very detailed and took her time to made sure everything looks nice. and my friend did pick out really nice kimonos for both of us too.
for lunch, we decided to visit a famous place for grilled fish - uokyu 魚久 本店. the menu here is very simple with set meal that is served with different type of fish, together with white rice, soup and pickles. we ordered the meal with a small portion of three kind of fishes, so we get to enjoy a little of everything, which is super delicious. the fishes has different texture and slightly different flavor as well, very fresh and grilled to perfection.
after lunch, we head to the nearby shrine for prayers and photos, koami jinja 小網神社. surprisingly, there’s quite a lot of people there and we had to queue as the shrine is quite small. we also visited a furoshiki store 風呂敷専門店 東京唐草屋 that sells different kind of clothes for furoshiki. i picked a few for my friends as souvenirs as i plan to wrap their christmas present in one. the store staff also taught me a few ways to wrap with the furoshiki i purchased, so it’s really fun and educational.
since we did quite a lot of walking, we decided to go to the tea store morinoen 森乃園 for some desserts. this store specializes in hojicha and it has been in operation for many many years, it a great place to get tea for souvenirs if you enjoy hojicha. i ordered the parfait at their upstairs cafe which has so much things inside, hojicha ice cream, jelly, bean paste, and many more. it’s quite enjoyable but also quite a lot to eat as well.
after that, before the sunset, we visited hamacho park 浜町公園 for some more photos with ginko tree leaves which is beautifully yellow during that time. the street lights was also lighted up at that time so the ambiance does change and feels quite romantic. it’s a very nice feeling to walk and enjoy some peaceful time in park.
within ningyocho neighborhood, there’s lots of crafty stores that sells nice decoration of stationery or kitchenware, and it’s great as souvenirs too. mucco is one of many, which has really cute selection with japanese style and elements. they do have branches in other areas as well, but definitely very interesting to visit and have a look. during that time, there’s so much christmas and new year stuff which are pretty.
for dinner, my friend brought us to her favorite izakaya place 立喰い処 酒喰洲 that is also within walking distance. this izakaya is very popular even on a weekday. my friend is so close with the staff here already, she just made the decision and ordered us a lot of good food, sashimi, ginko, fried fish, fried vegetables, cold soba. the food is so good as their ingredients come from fish market from other prefecture directly, so it’s very fresh. i got to try more fishes that is local to japan and it’s really nice. the fried food is so crispy and enjoyable, and surprisingly not too oily or heavy. another satisfying meal at an authentic neighborhood izakaya.
we decided to head home early to relax and unwind as we have an early dat tomorrow for our day trip to kawaguchiko. so it’s better to just chit chat and catch up and just go to bed early. to be continued...
