The Fall of Fair City
"Uncle Brendan. I'm feeling sleepy. Can I go home now? I promise I'll help with your experiments tomorrow."The young boy said in a groggy tone, rubbing his eyes. He had no idea why he was this tired, he usually had more energy and vigor. He loved to help his Uncle Brendan with experiments. The young boy loved science and wanted to grow up to be a scientist like him. His uncle patted his head in a gentle manner. "Just a few more minutes kiddo. I'm almost done here." Brendan spoke, referring to a beaker that contained some type of liquid that was being heated up on a bunsen burner. Brendan then nodded his head to a comfy looking chair. "Why don't you take a nap over there. I'll wake you up when I'm done." The man spoke with a smile, not quite reaching his eyes. The boy, too exhausted to notice, just nodded his head and climbed up the chair, and fell asleep. Brendan then turned his head back to the beaker. It gave an eerie glow in the dark lab, illuminating the man's face, revealing a dark and maniacal glint in his eyes. "Soon my greatest creation will be complete." The man said quietly to himself in a crazed, giddy tone.
Some time later the boy was strapped to a metal table, wires attached to his head through suctions. A tube with a needle at the end was punctured into the young boy's arm. The scientist looked over the equipment for a final check over. Satisfied that everything looked in order, the scientist turned on a machine. As it was warming up, the man was startled by a quiet noise. He turned around and saw that his nephew was beginning to wake up. "Darn." grumbled the scientist. "I thought that anesthesia I put into his food was enough to knock him out for a few more hours." The boy blinked his eyes open and began to look around the room, he still felt groggy so his mind had not yet become aware of the danger he was in. "Uncle Brendan?" the boy groggily asked as soon as he spotted the scientist. "What's going on? Why do my arms and legs feel heavy?" Brendan smiled at the boy with a sinister and maniacal gleam in his eyes. You are about to help me with my greatest experiment kiddo. Although I do wish you were still asleep. The process will be a bit..painful." The man explained. He then gave a shrug. "Oh well as they say, no pain no gain." Before the boy could respond. A rush of electricity shot through the young boy, causing him to scream out in pain. He also felt something enter his body, forcing it's way through his system, causing his insides to feel like they were melting and burning. This caused the young boy to scream out in pain more as tears rushed down his cheeks. All the while his Uncle Brendan watched with elated glee. "It's working!" He exclaimed happily. Suddenly, the door that lead to his basement lab busted open, causing the scientist to turn around ins surprise. "Stop right there Dr. Brendan Boxleitner!" A commanding voice called out. Brendan's shocked face soon formed into rage as he saw who came in. "You! How did you find me?" Brendan yelled out at the figure. "You honestly thought you could keep your illegal activity away from the heroic Captain M." The hero spoke, then his eyes furrowed in righteous fury. "Your going to jail for a long time for unethical experimentation and kidnapping." Before Brendan could stop him, Captain M fired a ray at the man which released a bolo, wrapping up the mad scientist in seconds. Successfully tying the maniac up, Captain M leapt towards the machine and quickly turned it off, ceasing the poor boy's torment. "NO!" Brendan yelled, trying to struggle from his bonds. "You can't do this! You can't stop me from creating my magnum opus!" The hero glanced at the tied man with disgust at his words. "Shut up." Captain M said as he kicked the man in the face, knocking the scientist out. Captain M's face then morphed into concern as he rushed to free the poor child. Swiftly but tenderly, the hero freed the boy from his binding. The young boy was barely trying to open eyes. The hero frowned as he knew the boy was about to pass out from the pain at any moment. He had to get him to a hospital and fast. "Don't worry kid. Captain M has you now, your safe." The young boy looked in a daze at his rescuer. He caught a glance of a unique mouse shaped emblem printed on the man's clothing. "Mouse." The boy quietly said, weakly pointing at the hero's emblem before finally passing out.

Tumblr Game: Heads Up, 7 Up
Thanks so much for the tag, @blind-the-winds.
Rules: Share your last 7 sentences.
This is an open tag!
I only have two more chapters of Caven before I need to rewrite it, edit it, and pass it off to the person who edits my short stories I post to Tumblr.
This is a little more than seven sentences. It is also in a very unpolished form as it has not received any editing yet.
Caven snippet: tw: mentions of a child's death and abduction.
“You cannot give up,” Shannon said. He removed a coffee from the drink holder and handed it to her. “Stop thinking in terms that your son is dead. If he is anything like his mother, then he is out there somewhere, fighting for his life.” How do you know? She and Shannon met a few weeks ago, argued over whether she should have been at the crime scene where her son was abducted — which she knew was a conflict of interest at the time. He was one of the supporters who called for her resignation. He didn't know her. Why would he offer his help now? Perhaps, it was all a setup. Stranger things have happened.

Having a mini-phase where I'm really into Bleach again, anyway:
Aizen kidnaps the Kurosaki twins when Masaki dies and has them raised in Las Noches, alternately pitting them against each other and then against minor arrancar. He wants to see how much of their Shinigami/Quincy backgrounds he can force to the foreground via constant stressors and being surrounded by Hollow energy. If he's very lucky, one of them will accidentally become a Vizard of their own volition, which he would love.
Can't let them die by way of aggressive morons, though, so they're usually in the company of an espada with self-control and maturity, like Starrk, Nel, Harribel, or Ulquiorra.
After all, what mad scientist would pass up the chance for Twin Studies?
They're still alive, and Aizen finds it funny to taunt them with just what they're missing out on. They hate Aizen, but they're also a little resentful of the fact that (at last according to Aizen himself), there are lots of people who could theoretically come and save them, like Urahara and Yoruichi and their dad, but aren't. Aizen himself oscillates between 'your loved ones are too weak to find you, because I'm a genius and can hide your reiatsu even if they do look into Hueco Mundo, muahahaha' and 'look, they don't even care enough about you to come looking.' You know, just to fuck them up in the head a bit.
There are several options:
Orihime finds them when it's her turn to be kidnapped, and then Ichigo has a (loving and resentful) surprise waiting for him when he arrives.
Orihime doesn't get kidnapped, but Aizen draws Ichigo out anyway by sending a taunting six-years-late ransom video with Yuzu and Karin in it.
Yuzu and Karin slip out when Nel gets chucked off the tower, and spend the next few years until Ichigo shows up just hanging out in the desert, because none of them know how to open a Garganta, not even Pesche and Dondochakka. (They do, actually, but Aizen's still keeping tabs on his pet projects, and is blocking that ability from the Fraccion because, well, he can't just let the girls go home before he's revealed himself to Soul Society.)
The Invasion of Soul Society causes so much hullabaloo that they (barely) manage to escape through Aizen's Negacion exit. (They aren't sure if they succeeded on their own, or if Aizen let them go to cause more chaos.)
They befriend Lilynette and at one point mention that they miss their brother, Ichigo, whom they loved the way Lilynette loves Starrk; they haven't really been told the truth of Starrk and Lilynette being two halves of the same soul, but it's enough that Lilynette bullies Starrk into kidnapping her and her human-ish friends to the Land of the Living and/or Soul Society, which Aizen actually didn't predict.

Chapter 5 is out!
Tumblr media
Silence settles in the space once again. The phantom image slowly ebbs away into the faded - but not forgotten - darkness.
The aching tremor in your bones after a dream is not unfamiliar.
-
So you have refused to cease survived the cold, guided by a beast but time is not your friend, nor will it ever be
Something else lurks
Do not forget to look up, else you may not see the dangers which may fall upon thee
Return to your journey here.

a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment
Tumblr media
So uh 💀 you remember how Deuce got possessed by a ghost in Endless Halloween Night?? Well—
***CONTENT WARNING: mentions of death and kidnapping (more specifically, child abduction).***
... Isn’t that implying that a child died young?
First of all, consider that the behavior of the ghost is very juvenile. They’re distressed, and their immediate instinct is to express that distress by crying and calling out for their mother. While it’s possible that it’s an adult ghost (crying and calling out for a parental figure isn’t behavior that is restricted solely to young children), it’s also their choice of vocabulary that gives the impression of a kid. The ghost complains about being tired, scared, and, most telling of all, claims that he has a “boo-boo”. Even Sebek, the first character to notice the crying, mistakes it as belonging to that of a child.
Something else that’s kind of odd is that the ghost makes strange assumptions about Sebek, Trey, and Rook. Whereas the other ghosts are mainly adults who assume the NRC boys are attacking them, stealing from them, and/or intruding on their territory, the ghost that possesses Deuce thinks that Rook and co. are planning on KIDNAPPING him. Rook talks about his handkerchief was soiled because he had used it while sitting on a grave earlier, so he isn’t able to offer it to wipe Deuce’s tears and snot now. This causes the ghost to freak out, accusing Rook of planning on putting the handkerchief over his mouth to kidnap him.
That’s... weird, right? Why would a little kid suspect such a thing unless their parents instilled fear of unknown people in them... or the kid experienced it themselves? Because while I’ve heard of parents warning their kids to stay away from strangers, I’ve scarcely heard of parents going into explicit detail about HOW a kid would be abducted. And not only that, but the reaction was so visceral; the ghost immediately runs away (and, in the battle, says he “doesn’t want to fight”).
Following the battle, Sebek and Deuce’s sprites are very close, and the animation that plays for their 2D live rigs implies that Sebek has a hold on Deuce or is restraining him in some way. This is what gets the ghost possessing Deuce to snap and finally decide to leave the body--being restrained by someone far larger and far stronger than they are.
Upon the ghost’s departure, they say that they’re going “back to mama”, which implies one of two things: either the mom also died with her child, OR that the mom eventually died of old age and reunited with them. Either way, it’s super morbid to think about, especially if we (hypothetically) accept that the child not only died young, but was also traumatized via a kidnapping before their death.
asudffoyifeqebpfhdbsai I’M PROBABLY OVERTHINKING IT 😅 but hey, it’s something interesting, isn’t it? I doubt I can wrestle meaning and/or implications of death for every single ghost that possesses a NRC student (like... how am I supposed to get anything out of “Lollipop the Candy Fairy”???), but Deuce’s ghost was definitely one that “stood out” to me.

Eleven years. It had been hard to keep track of the time in Zola's dimension, where even the sun and stars didn't move in any predictable pattern, but he'd been able to guess at the number watching his son grow up. In truth, he had no idea who Ian shared his genetics with. He didn't want to hazard a guess at where or how Zola had procured an infant in a test tube, but regardless of the biology, Ian was his kid. He'd raised him, fought for him, told him stories of the Avengers to help him fall asleep, taught him how to use the shield, how to use his gifts to protect. He knew Zola had been trying to recreate the super soldier serum, and to some extent it must have worked. Ian was stronger and faster than the average human, but he was good too, not a trace of Zola in him.
And now he was gone. Ian. Sharon. Jet. The portal back to Dimension Z destroyed when the subway tunnel collapsed behind him. Steve didn't know how he was cursed to be the last man standing every time. The one who threw himself on grenades and punched Nazis and arm-wrestled Titans, and he was still here, against all odds, even when he would have preferred to lay down his life for the ones he loved. It was harder, Steve knew, to be the one who carried on. Before Z, it had been Thanos, half the universe snapped away in an instant. God, it felt like a lifetime ago. He didn't know, yet, that time moved differently in Dimension Z, and only minutes had passed in his world, leaving him a man out of time, once again.
Assuming he didn't bleed out on this dirty floor. He'd stumbled off the inter-dimensional elevator, tucked away inside a subway station, and that was far as he got before he slumped to the ground, back to the concrete wall, defeat heavy on his shoulders. The stab wound in his abdomen was self-inflicted and still trickling blood where he'd tried to carve out whatever Zola had infected him with--his own consciousness, it felt like. He'd had that fucker's voice in his head for a decade, but it was quiet now.
He might have drifted, but the sound of footsteps snapped his head up. On your feet, soldier. Can't just sit here and wait to die. You listen close, Steven. You always stand up. He pressed a hand over the wound, not quite stifling a groan as he hauled himself to his feet. Steve's pain tolerance would put most people on their knees, but goddamn, that hurt. "Hello?" he called. The shield still hung on his arm, battered and scratched from a decade in hell, much like Steve himself. He wasn't even positive the elevator had brought him back to his own dimension following the explosions, but the sign on the wall still said 51st street, so that was something.

You're no stranger to intrusive thoughts. You've had your fair share of them before the accident of course, and now you like to think you've made your peace with them. Some had actually been helpful! After all, you think to yourself as you clean up, you'd be lying to yourself if you said this whole thing had been your plan from the beginning. So, no, you're no stranger to intrusive thoughts but this one gives you pause.
If children went missing, surely that would cripple the company. Another child related scandal? Enough that they couldn't cover it up?
You shrug it off. That's crazy. That would make you just like them. Wouldn't it?
Forgive me but your afton au lives in my brain rent free and I was thinking about maybe if reader was a little less vengeance and a little more vanny and this ficlet just forced itself out of me. Kind of an au of your au I suppose? Reader starts out like yours but the afton influence is subtly shifting their goals to align with his over time

You're no stranger to intrusive thoughts. You've had your fair share of them before the accident of course, and now you like to think you've made your peace with them. Some had actually been helpful! After all, you think to yourself as you clean up one of your messes, you'd be lying to yourself if you said this whole thing had been your plan from the beginning. So, no, you're no stranger to intrusive thoughts but this one gives you pause.
If children went missing, surely that would cripple the company. Another child related scandal? Enough that they couldn't cover it up?
You shrug it off. That's crazy. That would make you just like them. Wouldn't it?
It's another few weeks when the thought returns. It's less sudden this time. You're watching Sun play with the children and you think of how easy it would be to separate one from the group. You drum your fingers stiffly against the security desk.
You… you supposed it could work. Between you and your boys you could keep the kids safe. Maybe set up a place down in the lower levels where you knew no one went. Where no one would look. It'd just be until the company crashed and burned. It'd be fine, you reasoned, the kids would be taken care of in the meantime. Their parents would worry but it'd be for the greater good. Wouldn't it?
When the thought comes again, you approach Sun and Moon with it. You've made no progress, you argue. You need to do something more drastic.
They almost seem to hesitate for a moment but as quick as it came, they were agreeing with you and offering their help. The three of you make a plan to test it out. There'd be no harm in that, you figure. You can always return the kid if things don't work out.
You find out it's far too easy to kidnap a child. You feel like you should feel bad. You don't. In fact, you almost feel… excited? That should worry you, but you shrug it off.
It'd be fine. After all, you're no stranger to intrusive thoughts.
Too bad you don't realize this one's not yours.

Tell me all about your lore for Pryce. I just finished the GSC Adventures manga chapter last week and I'm intrigued.
((WELP TIME TO TAKE A CROWBAR TO THAT PARTICULAR BOX, SORRY PANDORA BUT WE BUSTIN' THIS WIDE OPEN--))
((Going to put it under a read more because this is gonna get long, detailed and contain spoilers up to the GSC chapters of Adventures.))
So firstly, to get the big weird one out of the way: I have NO IDEA why the manga characterized Pryce the way they did. In literally NOWHERE ELSE will you get "takes over Team Rocket to grab Celebi" from this old man. Hell, the need to make ANOTHER Team Rocket villain when Giovanni is STILL ALIVE boggles the mind.
But so this gives us the question: how do you balance the idea of the Masked Man with his usual in-game depiction of "stern but cares about you" grandpa?
My answer? Batman.
Let me elaborate:
Before Red goes in and defeats Giovanni, Team Rocket is everywhere, and I do mean everywhere, in Kanto. On top of that, the manga even has Gym Leaders like Surge, Koga and Blaine working as members of Team Rocket. Now I don't think this means they all joined willingly--heck, my idea for Koga is that Team Rocket forced him to join by holding Janine hostage--but if the idea of a criminal organization having members in essentially government/leadership positions sounds like some Batman comics where he was fighting the Mafia instead of one of his rogue's gallery? Yeah, I picked up on that too.
When we see Team Rocket in GS/HGSS, it's three years after they've been disbanded. Considering that they were well situated in Kanto by the time RGB/FRLG happens, you would think in-universe (because we know irl it was more "shit wait we get to make a SEQUEL???") they'd be able to cross the border more easily. UNLESS someone was sabotaging their attempts to sneak across the border or bribe/persuade Johto officials. And who better than a Gym Leader of Johto, and an experienced one at that?
Putting this all in a more protagonist light also recolors Will, Karen, Green and Silver's inclusion, because as we all know, Batman also adopted kids. In this case however, Pryce would want to minimize the involvement of his wards in his vigilante work. He's canonically a grandfather after all, so keeping kids safe would be a high priority of his.
Now obviously there are way too many "Masked Men" characters in Pokémon. However, Pryce isn't actually bat-themed either (that would be Koga). So I took some liberties to redesign the outfit and give it a new name.

My insomia is still clinging on. I decided to write since I'm awake. I have what is called "sleep maintenance" insomnia.
I finished Camp NaNoWri. This means that whatever I type this month will be a "bonus". This is huge for me, as I have never "won" any version of NaNoWri.
How is your writing going? Did you develop any interesting characters or a passage that you would like to share?
Tumblr media
Author’s commentary:
As a writer, have you ever pulled an all nighter? I have many times. The reasons are plenty. My insomnia tends to be worse in the spring. Maybe allergies are causing it? I don't know.
All I do know is that I am tired, and my future self hates to edit the dreck I write in the wee hours of the morning, but I try to be productive.
cw: child abduction
For my inspiration, I was watching unsolved mysteries before I decided to work on Caven. Many shows sparked this passage. However, the main cases were Adam Walsh, Jacob Wetterling, and Morgan Nick.
Tumblr media
Snippet: (tw: child abduction. murder of the child. gun mention)
As always, this is my trash draft. There will be grammar issues and sometimes incorrect grammar. It is unpolished.
She was reminded of another case: an abduction that happened in the late 1980s in Oklahoma, United States. A little boy who went by the name of Caleb Mitchell and his friends were going to the movie theater to see the film The Goonies. Caleb was the apple of his mother’s eye, and after begging for what seemed like a millionth time and reassuring her that nothing bad would happen, his mother agreed to allow him to accompany his friends.
It should have been a simple trip: bike to the movie theater, watch said film, and then return home. Simple. By the witness accounts, Caleb and his friends arrived at their destination, ordered three small, popcorn buckets, two containers of Junior Mints and Skittles, and three Coca-Colas for a grand total of eighteen dollars.
It was after they left the movie complex that things became muddy and confusing. Caleb and his friends biked from there onto the deserted road to Caleb’s home before they were stopped by a lanky fellow with a firearm. He ordered all of the friends to lay down face first on the dirt road and not look at him before he started to pace around them. The American Police thought that he was judging them based upon his perverse desires, and they wouldn’t know how right they were.
Then, on a warm, fall day on October 3rd, 2018, the police received a tip from an ex-girlfriend of a convicted felon named David Smith. She alleged that Mr. Smith was inappropriate with her youngest son. After the arrest, the police held a press conference, stating that David Smith had confessed to the molestation and murder of Caleb Mitchell. The news broke internationally a moment later.

ANGST ANGST ANGST ANGST
Ghost Kids When They Were Kidnapped
You ask and you shall receive. I'm not including the uh... The certain inappropriate stuff because no. Listen I don't know the time frame of the kidnappings so I don't know if Max was there the whole time, but let's pretend he was.
Not proofread.
Kidnapping TW, anxiety, breakdowns, etc. Violence and child murder/death. Torture. Do NOT read this if you have an inkling that you may be triggered. This gets dark.
Griffin
This boy was the first and the youngest of the group. He has no way of knowing there was about to be a serial kidnapper and killer going around, nor that he would be the first target. I feel like The Grabber would have been more anxious about the kidnapping and therefore would've killed Griffin sooner.
Albert Shaw would've taken Griffin while he was on his way home from school, just like everyone else. I feel like Griffin lived a good way out of town, so he usually got the car or bus to and from school. That day, however, he was practicing walking part of the way home on his own. It was only when he didn't complete the trip to his mother's work was he reported missing. Griffin was definitely the easiest to kidnap, being the smallest and lightest and the one who never had a chance of knowing what was about to happen.
But for the short time that he was there he screamed and cried his lungs and heart out. All Griffin wanted was to go home. He didn't care if he couldn't report the Grabber, and he tried to tell him that, but he wouldn't listen. I also feel like The Grabber used to be a lot more outwardly cruel (though he still was by the end) towards his victims, so he probably beat Griffin up a few times just for the hell of it. However, Griffin's death was probably the quickest out of everyone, since the Grabber just wanted to job done. It's because he was there not very long that he knows Finney doesn't have much time.
Billy
With a little experience under his belt, Albert Shaw felt a little more confident in taking his next victim. However, he hadn't yet become known amongst the community for who he was to become, so Billy was still pretty calm about the situation. Everyone assumed it was just a one-off incident.
As we know, Billy was the exception to the 'picked up after school' pattern; he was kidnapped while doing the morning paper run. I feel like Billy had specifically trained his dog not to run over to people or bark while on the paper run as to not disturb the people, which happened to be pinnacle in his demise. I feel like it happened right when he finished doing the papers. The Grabber had memorised his routine and swooped in at the last moment to 'offer a ride him for those tired legs'. We all know what happened next.
Once Billy was down in the basement, he was immediately trying to scream for help. The Grabber informed him that wasn't going to work, so he decided to escape. He had heard Max calling his brother from upstairs, which is why he tried to climb the stairs; he was looking for Max. But he didn't find Max (despite Max apparently never sleeping due to being high. IDK how that worked). He found The Grabber upstairs, and was killed for it. His death was also pretty quick, but the beating that happened before it was much longer.
Vance
Vance was easily the hardest to kidnap. But he was also easy to convince The Grabber wasn't a threat. Vance never believed he'd let himself get kidnapped; he would beat the life out of whoever tried. So when the Grabber approached him as he was walking the long trip home from school, he didn't suspect anything. That was until he was hit on the head with a 2 x 4 piece of timber before getting the spray can trick.
Once Vance was in the basement, he for once didn't react with physical violence. Because he isn't dumb, you know. He knew acting up would get himself in trouble. So, he just worked on his escape plan until The grabber found the massive dent in the wall.
Vance definitely put up a fight. He used all the remaining strength he had (remember, The Grabber fed his victims little as to weaken them) to do damage to his kidnapper. But The Grabber had a knife, and as Vance put his hands on Albert's shoulders to try and push him away, he was promptly stabbed. The death was brutal. I imagine Max was out so The Grabber took all the time he needed taking out all that pent-up anxiety on poor Vance.
Bruce
Okay, so by the time Bruce was kidnapped everyone knew who The Grabber was. And Bruce was probably the hardest to coerce into getting near Albert simply because the boy had basic stranger danger training. But Bruce was also a very friendly guy, so in the end he crumbled and agreed to help The Grabber with whatever was going on in the back of his van (The Grabber was purposefully vague about it). Bruce had a horrible gut feeling, but he ignored it in favour of being kind.
Once he was in the basement, he immediately began to cry and berate himself. I mean, he had a gut feeling; why didn't he just listen to it? That was what was going through his head at the time. He was scared - so scared - as were everyone else before and after him, but Bruce definitely let it show the most. He eventually got control of himself, though, and began is escape plan.
Only, he was caught right as he had started. Bruce had begged for mercy, for anything. He was willing to do literally almost anything to get out of there. He was willing to let The Grabber cut off a limb while he was awake if that's what he wanted. But The Grabber liked knowing he had control, so he instead made it as painful as possible. Bruce was crying (I mean, they all cried, but he cried the most) and continued begging for mercy. But he never got it.
Robin
Robin, as we know, was snatched while he was on his way to the store from school. I feel like Robin didn't fall for the classic 'want to see a magic trick?' trick because The Grabber had specifically approached him. And Albert probably knew that; he had heard the kid's reputation and saw the way he presented himself and just knew. So, he decided to approach Robin while he was still a little ways' off the store and attack him there. Robin may have been strong, but he wasn't strong enough to get a fit, full-grown adult off of him.
Once he was in the basement, he tried to take the most calm and intelligent route. However, he just couldn't get a good escape plan going. So, he decided he'd just have to fight his way out. But that was difficult too, since he was barely being fed enough to stay alive. In the end, Robin ended up falling for the open door trick. He was at the end of his rope and just needed a lifeline, which was exactly what he wasn't going to get.
By then The Grabber was confident in his skills. Robin only lasted a good few days before caving and going up the stairs. Because of his confidence, Albert Shaw took as much time as he wanted bringing Robin the most pain possible. It was horrible. All the deaths were horrible. None of them deserved it.
