Redraw (edit???) of volume 3 cover with original designs of Vanitas and Noé… I mean, Chester. 

Tbh it’s more or less the same, except for Chester’s scar and hairstyle and Vani’s vampire fangs and minor outfit details. Those look fun, but I can see why Jun didn’t include them in the final version — all those tiny things must be a pain to draw consistently…

The catholic school education is coming in clutch rn. Let me cook I promise I’m not high. There are 12 paladins in VnC right? If not, ignore everything I’m about to say. So Gano is essentially Judas, driven by greed and extremism. Working with an influential vampire because he sees the chasseurs aren’t doing things the “right way”. Judas was working with the chief priests and Roman captains and one popular belief to his betrayal was that he had hoped Jesus would overturn the Roman Empire. Who were oppressing the Jewish people at the time but Jesus wasn’t doing that. He was “too soft” and Judas believed in a revolution. It’s also said he was “tempted by the Devil” and we can go down the devil —> vampire connections rabbit hole all day.

Now I say this, I don’t know how much inspiration mochijun is taking from the bible. Like is Gano gonna kill himself? Probably not, even if he does it won’t be from remorse of his actions. But if we are following some threads here, if Ogier is a paladin I don’t think he’s Spider then because there’s supposed to be only one traitor. Moving onto my next point, is Jesus then Charles or Roland? I’m going to go with Charles, he is the head and I think he also chooses the paladins so yeah. But Roland just embodies the Christ-like values. Unless you want to say Roland is Peter. Because Peter also believed in himself as a follower of God. He made mistakes and thought he was the most faithful apostle yet he denied Jesus three times.

Like Roland trusts in himself and his thinking more than God actually. I don’t know James like that so by default we’re gonna say he’s Olivier.

And John has to be Astolfo.

Because if you didn’t know, John was the youngest apostle. And he’s the only apostle that survived, living to old age. Every other apostle was brutally murdered for their beliefs.Fueling the hope that Astolfo will live. Finally Peter, James, and John are usually named as a trio in the bible. They were the closest to Jesus.

old sketch from march I decided to finish <3 usually when one of my sketches (intending to become a completed drawing) gets put on the backburner, it never surfaces. I usually have to prioritize other drawings and then months or years pass and once I have time, I lose interest and start other drawings in their place... but I'm glad I mustered up the energy to finish this one, ESPECIALLY since I strongly felt I needed more gothic pieces in my gallery hehe

the relationships between characters in this series are so interesting, because there are so many character parallels. I actually had to change the personality of white alice from the sketch to the final, since I .. think I misinterpreted her story! (so I think it turned out less gothic horror than desired but you know what I'll take this <3) I first read this story when I was 14 and I 1000% BET I'll still be finding nuances and new details in the writing years into the future...

I had a lot of fun with the animation albeit just being a blink animation 😩👍 but blinks can be animated in a variety of ways! in terms of my animation skills, I do consider myself on the weaker side. so if i can integrate more animation frames into my illustrations, it'll help me become more familiar and comfortable with the medium. I especially like the difference in how many frames it takes for dark Alice vs white Alice to blink. I think the blinks came out fluidly and I'm quite satisfied with how this drawing came out!

I just had a thought. What if our lovely Machina's real name is Carmilla? It definitely fits the lady-loving vampire theme we've got there.

Oh, interesting thought!

Besides being very wlw, Carmilla is also quite an early example of vampires in literature. It has predecessors, but aside from The Vampyre by Polidori (which kicked off literary vamps in the first place), the only one generally cited as having a major influence on the genre is the penny dreadful Varney the Vampire, the source for the name Francis Varney. In other words, August Ruthven and Francis Varney currently have names pulled from just about the earliest possible examples of literary vampires. That means that making Francis's real name Carmilla, Varney's immediate followup in the timeline of major pre-Dracula vampire works, would be a nice touch to keep all that consistent.

I can't think of many connections yet between Machina and the story of Carmilla itself yet besides the queerness, but still. Fun theory!
