Hey everyone!! I've been running a Discord Server for a while now and figured I'd share it on here!

My Discord Server is designed for those who are currently working in, are in school for, or have interest in veterinary medicine or other related animal science fields. It's meant for the sharing of experiences, knowledge, information, resources, and many other things.

I aim to build a safe and positive community blend of the past, current, and future veterinary work forces to be able to grow as one and learn new things from one-another.

This is a server built upon a zero-discrimination policy (meaning no toleration of gender, sexual identity, racial, cultural, disability, age, or socio-economic class slander here). We welcome everyone to be a part of this vastly growing field and hope you will join us on our journey to grow, learn, and better help animals across the globe.

We have channels sorted by animal type to facilitate the finding and sharing of information and resources for those interested in more animal science than medicine!

I host events including lectures and trivia in the server and do a fact of the day!! Also planning on hosting some fun competitive events and voice chat study/hangout sessions!

Taking a hiatus from veterinary medicine. I had a small nervous breakdown during a shift due to bad management, hostile work environment, and unreasonable expectations. They fired almost everyone in the summer, refused to hire new employees for like 2 months, and started overbooking appointments. 15 minute back-to-back appointments starting at 9 am to 6 pm, with a mandatory 2 drop off appointments per doctor per day. We had one technician (me), one receptionist, one CVT who would regularly disappear for hours, and two doctors. I never had the chance to take any breaks. If I got behind I got yelled at. My coworkers were getting written up for unbelievable things that didn't happen during business hours nor on site. They asked me to work an extra day past my two weeks because otherwise it would have been one technician doing regular appointments PLUS surgery. On my last day, they asked me to stay, I refused. Then asked if I could stay part-time. Then told me that regarding work stress that "I do it to myself."

I'm now working for a local kennel, it pays less and is pretty boring, but I'm so much happier. I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to veterinary medicine, if I do, it won't be for the same clinic. The doctors were great, I will miss them. They even defended me when management tried to say I "was not fit for this type of work" even though I've been doing it over 5 years. It's a major veterinary chain, though I won't name it.

I've had two doctors advise me that my job was stressing me out too much. I was on prescription anti-nausea medication and my blood pressure was very high despite being on medication for it. But you know, "I do it to myself."

The attitude of "I've been doing this for 2 years and I already know everything" has got to go in vet met. I'm done teaching people that think they are better than me with less than a quarter of my experience, no people skills, and no formal schooling. Everyone in medicine will always have more to learn.

And honestly, I wish we started screening for people skills in vet med. We don't need any more people that hate talking to people and have 0 communication skills. I've seen staff yell at clients and slam doors on them for wanting to make a different care choice for their pet than the team wanted (these were not animals that were going to suffer from this choice btw. And even if they were, behaving like that is not going to help the animals get care. It's just going to drive people away). I've seen animals slammed on tables and floors, yelled at for being scared, clients shamed for seeking help or realizing they are in over their head. I've seen illegal, unsafe, and unethical practice out the wazoo and nobody seems to give a shit. Everyone thinks they are the exception to the rules and that maybe other people need training but they can just do whatever they want. People just need to get over themselves and realize that their opinion is just that: an opinion. We are never going to grow as a profession if we can't have basic standards.

IN NEED OF DERMATOLOGY TESTING AND TEETH/EAR CLEANING!

Hi there! I haven't been on tumblr in a decade so it feels really weird posting and seeing old posts, ya girl was going through it! BUT ANYWAYS. Niko is in dire need of dermatology testing, teeth cleaning and ear cleaning. She first started pulling her hair out a few years ago, it scared me to death because it happened in the middle of the night while I was sleeping.

Over time the excessive hair pulling and itching decreased after a few vet visits they gave her shots to ease the itching/biting, we tried anxiety meds for a few months (8 to be exact) and then determined that we should get dermatology testing because it is more likely to be an allergy issue. I even got blood work done and they said she's healthy THANK GOODNESS she's healthy on the inside because my heart would be BROKEN. However, it's still present. I still occasionally see chunks of hair missing. I am currently in a financial bind that prevents me from taking care of Niko's vet expenses in the way that I want to. I'm currently a student in college studying Vet Technology myself, but I'm unable to diagnose her properly so I can only speculate. Using GoFundMe was my very last resort. I understand there are more important causes people may want to donate to, but I would HIGHLY appreciate it if people donated to or shared this GoFundMe.

Animal Dermatology Clinic testing sliding scale of $1,250-$2,000 (I called and they said I have to pay for the consultation first which is $200)

hey fun fact: if your dog eats something they really shouldn’t (compost, rodenticide or insecticide, chocolate, raisins or grapes, onions or garlic, anything with xylitol, coffee grounds, corn cobs, pieces of toys, string, etc) yes you can induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide but please make sure you are giving the proper amount and then call the aspca poison control hotline! hydrogen peroxide can cause irritation of the esophagus and it is not ideal, obviously in emergency situations where you may not be able to make it to a vet soon enough it may be your only option.

and so u know what to expect: when u get to the vet hospital they may administer apomorphine to make your dog vomit and then afterwards an antiemetic to prevent nausea and vomiting. apomorphine is usually only effective if your pet has eaten the material within four hours (but i have seen it work on a dog who ate chocolate 6+ hours before the drug was administered). for toxic materials if it’s been long enough and your pet has partially digested the materials hospitalization may be recommended, or at least blood work being rechecked daily for a few days. for materials that may cause blockages, like corn cobs or pieces of toys, depending on the size of your dog and the size of the object you may be told to monitor at home. if necessary an endoscopy or a surgical procedure to remove the foreign material will be recommended. please don’t take your dog eating foreign material lightly, it can be very serious, i have seen dogs die because the foreign body inside of them went unremoved for prolonged periods of time. the sooner you get it out, the better for your dogs health (and the better for your bank account).

p.s. if your dog eats a battery or something sharp and piercing like a needle or wooden skewer, please DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING take them to the vet immediately

Hey guys I know I said I’d be more active but life has gotten crazy with me moving to some vet visits. I want to try and get some spare money for the vet and the animals. Just last night my sisters dog had gotten injured and this morning we brought her to the vet. The bill was almost 2,000$ I had to pull out a loan to cover the bigger part of the bill. I had to also give all that was in my account which still didn’t cover the whole bill. On the way home from the vet me and her had gotten into a car accident, luckily it wasn’t severe and no real big injuries occurred but the stressors are not helping my sister or family. Sense moving I haven’t really started work yet so I am not able to get a decent check.
