Visit To New Mexico Wildlife Center - Turkey Vulture - Animal Ambassador My friend Kevin and I went to visit the New Mexico Wildlife Center ( @new_mexico_wildlife_center ) in El Valle de Arroyo Seco, New Mexico (near Española) Most of these photos were taken through the cage mesh. Ironically the close up come out better than wider shots. I did the best I could to share these amazing birds with you. #TurkeyVulture #TurkeyVultures #Vulture #Vultures #Scavengers #Scavengers #VulturesOfInstagram #Birds #Bird #BirdPhotography #Birding #BirdingPhotography #Naturalist #PhotoByJeriRae (at New Mexico Wildlife Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpq69r1tgJA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I happened upon a wake of black vultures. All of them standing in this horaltic pose. It was creepy! I had to turn around and drive past again so I could get shots. Apparently it’s totally normal and they do this to thermoregulate and dry their feathers, not summon a demon. Also, in my googling, I found that the black vulture and turkey vulture are endangered, but we need them. #endangeredwings . . . . . #blackvulture #wake #horalticpose #feathers #vulture #birds #wildlife #birdsofinstagram #birdphotography #nature #naturephotography #vultureculture #sessumsphotography #animals #vulturesofinstagram #birdsofprey #raptors #raptorsofinstagram #wildlifephotography #shotoncanon #natgeowild #natgeoyourshot #featheredfriends #savethevultures #birdnerd #birdfreaks #eye_spy_birds #yourshotphotographer #yourbestbirds (at Charleston, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdeTk57u47i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It's September 4th, International Vulture Awareness Day. Now I readily admit that vultures are not our planet's most popular, attractive, cuddly, or photogenic creatures, but they do fill an ecologically vital niche. They currently face a wide range of threats, though. Of the 23 species of vultures, 16 are considered endangered, vulnerable, or threatened. In some parts of the world, the numbers have declined by 90%.
Vultures play an essential role in the ecological health of the environment by acting as nature’s garbage disposals. As an "umbrella" species, vultures also benefit other wildlife species, including endangered birds and mammals. They quickly devour carcasses, which keeps the environment clean and free of contagious diseases like anthrax and rabies. Vultures also aid in catching poachers. When poachers kill an animal, they leave the carcass behind. Vultures find it almost immediately and circle above it before descending to dispose of it. This behavior, of course, leads authorities to the poached animal.
The majestic and instantly recognisable sight of a vulture soaring high overhead is truly captivating. Two hundred years ago, vultures were common throughout Europe, but by the 1960s, they had practically all disappeared because of persecution, poisoning, and habitat loss. Today, though, thanks to conservation efforts, a vulture soaring high in the sky in Europe and other regions of the world has become an increasingly common and spectacular sight again. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Past Photo Favorites - Turkey Vultures - They are majestic fliers and use the thermals to surf the sky. When I’ve seen them they flew in large arcs and circles across the sky “The turkey vulture is a scavenger and feeds almost exclusively on carrion. It finds its food using its keen eyes and sense of smell, flying low enough to detect the gasses produced by the beginnings of the process of decay in dead animals. In flight, it uses thermals to move through the air, flapping its wings infrequently. It roosts in large community groups. Lacking a syrinx—the vocal organ of birds—its only vocalizations are grunts or low hisses. It nests in caves, hollow trees, or thickets. Each year it generally raises two chicks, which it feeds by regurgitation. It has very few natural predators. In the United States, the vulture receives legal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.” - Wikipedia #PastPhotoFavorites #TurkeyVulture #Vulture #Scavenger #CarrionEater #VulturesOfInstagram #Birds #Bird #BirdPhotography #Birding #BirdingPhotography #PhotoByJeriRae #Naturalist (at Santa Fe, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co0fYQbv2cX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here are some of my personal boning tips:
Use bug spray. Also use tick spray to treat your clothing.
DO NOT go on railroad tracks. It is illegal to be on or near them. Never, never, never. There are plenty of other places to look. Bones are not worth risking you’re life for.
For me, I live in Ohio, I go boning year round except in the winter. I don’t believe there is a “best” time to go. The more you go, the more bones you’ll find. Persistence is KEY.
Same goes for antlers. I searched in the early spring because they are said to be easier to find then, with no luck. The recently, I found some without much effort. (Fun fact: Porcupines eat them!)
Go in the rain. When everything is wet it makes the white of the bone stand out much easier.
If you find a spot with multiple different kinds of animal remains or more than one sketelon, it could be a kill site. I always drop pins on my phone to mark the location because animals are very habitual. It is likely they will use same spot every time they eat.
Sometimes even if I find one random bone, I still drop a pin so I can come back and look another time. Give them easy recognizable labels and save them all under the same location as the others.
In ditches is a great place, or anywhere with sloping down areas. I find tons sliding down sides of hills or at the bottom.
Don’t look TOO hard. A lot of the time I have more luck if I’m not concentrating too much.
Bases of trees.
Areas with a lot of coverage. When animals are near death they like to lay somewhere quiet so they feel safe, so these are great places to check.
Animals often drag their prey near water sources to eat it. So check in or near creeks.
Animal scat (poo), fur, prints, and feathers, are all good signs that you are on the right track.
I love to look at beaches too.
The more you look for bones, honestly, the better you get. It’s almost like you are training your eyes.
If you’re into vulture culture, always keep a ziploc bag, gloves, and tweezers with you at all times. A garbage bag is always a good idea too 😂 I have it in my purse no matter what.
Bring someone with you. Even if you have to bribe them. I tell my boyfriend if he finds more bones than me we can go out to eat after. And a lot of the time he does.
Don’t listen to your headphones. Appreciate the sound and atmosphere of nature. It’s also a lot safer to be aware of your surroundings.
Check the laws for your area.
