Why I love Jack-o-lanterns
Tumblr media
I love Jack-o-lanterns and I think a lot of people misunderstand why I love them. I don't think of Jack-o-lanterns as sinister or scary. To me Jack-o-lanterns are warm and comforting. Kind of like why some people collect teddy bears. (One of my friends collects teddy bears.)
It's something comforting and protective from childhood that lets you feel safe and soothed.
The original purpose of the Jack-o-lantern, according to the Irish legend, is to protect against wandering or evil spirits. They were a protection ward.
The earliest jack-o-lanterns were carved out of turnips but when pumpkins became a popular discovery from The New World (as they were delicious and easier to carve) Jack-o-lanterns evolved into the popular American-style pumpkin ones we see today.
Jack-o-lanterns were originally not just for Halloween. They could be carved any time (so long as you had pumpkins around) to ward off malevolent spirits. So to me an image of a house with many Jack-o-lanterns is warm and protected. They are a light in darkness.
It's also supposed to be very lucky if you can keep a jack-o-lantern burning all night long.
It's bad luck to blow out a Jack-o-lantern before midnight on Halloween and it is good luck for the whole year if it can keep burning until dawn.
Pop culture depictions of Jack-o-lanterns being used to successfully protect against supernatural threats include:
Trick 'r Treat (2007 movie)
The House with a clock in its walls (novel and movie)
Mervyn in The Sandman: The Kindly Ones (Graphic novel an The Sandman audio drama act 4.)

MIDNIGHTS – OCTOBER 21, 2022
It’s a momentary glimmer of distraction. The tiniest notion of reminiscent thought that wanders off into wondering, the spark that lights a tinderbox of fixation. And now it is irreversible. The flame has caught. You’re wide awake.
Maybe it’s that one urgent question you meant to ask someone years ago but didn’t. Someone that slipped through the cracks in your history, and they’re are too far gone now anyway. All the ghost ships that have sailed and sailed away, but at this hour, they’ve anchored in your harbor. They sit with flags waving, bright and beautiful. And it’s almost like it’s real.
We lie awake in love and in fear and in turmoll and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t — right this minute — about to make some fateful life-altering mistake. This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching. Hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.

Aizawa x reader - the first move
Tumblr media
Hello! I really liked your Aizawa x Student!Reader :) If you can may I please see an Aizawa x Reader where Reader and him have been going out for some time and he finally makes a move to kiss her at a lantern festival? (Releasing a lantern together) Thank you, have a good day! 💕 - Anon💜
Sitting in your office, you heard the door open and you looked up, grinning for ear to ear as you watched the underground hero walk through.
“Hey, what’s up?” You asked.
He pointed to the clock on the wall.
“You were supposed to finish and hour ago and you didn’t come meet me.”
“Oh, right sorry Shota I was supposed to text, I’ve got some work I need to finish going through, I actually thought you’d be on patrol tonight which is why I never let you know.”
Aizawa nodded his head, making his way over to your desk, hands stuffed in his pockets as he leant over, taking a look at what you were doing.
You looked up at him, resting your chin on your hand as you smiled up to him.
“What’re you doing?” You asked.
“That’s no important, leave it for tomorrow.”
“Come on, I’m nearly finished anyway.”
He shrugged, sitting in the chair while he waited for you to finish your work.
You carried on with your paper work, and you set a few of them aside.
“Why do I keep getting intern requests from your students?”
“Huh?”
He walked over and you gestured to the papers you had just set aside.
“I’ve never taken on any interns.”
You finished your work, putting it all away and stood up, grabbing your knife belt, putting it back on, and you turned to look at him.
“Mic.” He sighed.
“So, can I accept them?”
“You just said you’ve never taken interns, why would you want them now?”
Aizawa follows after you, back through the office and you waved at a few of your side kicks.
“Why not, I think it would be interesting. They seem promising.”
“No.”
You grinned from ear to ear.
“What? Come on!”
“No, they ask too many questions.”
This made you laugh a little bit, and you nudged him with your shoulder.
“I’ve heard half your students think I’m dating mic anyways, it’ll be fine!”
He snapped his gaze to you.
“They think you’re dating mic?”
You nodded your head.
“Yeah, I think that’s got something to do with him constantly being at my office though, he’s like a pet at this point, I feed him and take him on walks.”
Aizawa gave a small laugh at this, hiding his face in his scarf so nobody would see him smiling.
“Don’t tell him that, he won’t be happy.”
“Come on, tell me you can’t see it. Like if he was a pet he’d be a golden retriever.”
Aizawa gave a small nod, indicating that he agreed with you.
Since you were both pro heroes, and you were a bigger hero than he was, you both settled for going to your apartment for the evening.
Aizawa didn’t want anybody to know that you were dating, it was the easiest way to keep you both safe, and since he didn’t like people knowing his personal life it also made him more comfortable.
Which is why you mostly had date nights and spent time together at one of your apartments.
Today was no different, he changed into the spare clothes he kept there, coming out in some sweatpants and a black sweatshirt, and you came back wearing some jeans and a hoodie, rolling up your sleeves as you walked to the kitchen.
“So, tell me about the problem children today.” You said.
He gave a heavy sigh, telling you about how his day had gone, and what he had been doing.
You made him a coffee, then started getting everything ready for dinner, and while you were doing that he started preparing the food.
“So, what you’re saying is your students are out of control and you can’t teach?”
“Doing a better job then you could.” He huffed.
You snickered a little, patting his back as you walked past him.
“Yeah, that’s true. I’m a terrible teacher.”
He hummed in agreement, lifting his arms so you could duck underneath him, getting something from the cupboard before moving away.
While he was setting the vegetables into a pot, he noticed a flyer on the counter, and he looked at it.
“You’re going to the lantern festival?” He asked.
“I was thinking about it yeah, I’ve not really decided yet.”
He walked over to the sink to wash his hands.
“You’re going.” He said.
You turned around with a little smirk.
“Oh yeah? Am I now?”
“I’m taking you.”
Your mischievous smirk turned into a gentle smile.
“Shota you don’t have to. I know the students will probably be there, and you’re not comfortable with the whole personal life being put out there, and I’m bound to be recognised.”
“I’m taking you.” He repeated.
You laughed softly at him, nodding your head.
“Alright, I’ll go with you then.”
When the day for the festival came, you weren’t really sure what to wear.
You needed something comfortable but practical in case anything happened, so you had on some boots, jeans, and a grey sweater that may or may not have been stolen from your boyfriend a while back as well as a jacket to fight the cold.
You had also hidden a knife in your boot, because one weapon was better than none, and you wanted to be ready for anything.
Aizawa had asked him to meet you just in front of the entrance, so that’s where you stood waiting, talking to a few fans of yours who recognised you.
“Are you going to the festival with someone?!” One of them gushed.
You smiled.
“Yup, I’m meeting a friend in fact, but don’t worry, any trouble and I’ll be right on it!”
They laughed a little bit, asking if they could take photos with you which you happily allowed before ushering them inside to have fun.
You looked at your phone for the time, and when you looked back up you saw him walking over.
He wasn’t wearing his hero costume either, instead he’d settled for a causal look as well, but he had his hair tied away from his face.
Walking over he stood with his hands in his pockets, looking at you.
“Ready?”
“I’ve been waiting for you idiot, course I’m ready.”
He rolled his eyes, gesturing with his head to the entrance and you both made your way in.
Aizawa had no preference on what he wanted to do, so you took him around to look at everything that was going on.
You were grinning from ear to ear, and he was just letting you drag him around until finally he stopped you.
“Follow me.”
You nodded your head, letting him take your hand and lead you through the crowd, away from where everybody was going to set off their lanterns.
He took you down to the waters edge where there was less people, and he got you to hold the lantern while he lit it.
Both of you held on to it, and you smiled softly at him, which he returned with a small smile.
“This has been really fun.” You whispered.
“Yeah, it’s been nice. I’ve never really come to one of these before.”
“Really? So this is your first one?”
Aizawa nodded his head.
“Well, I’m glad I could be with you.”
Aizawa glanced to the side, then to you, and he counted down from three, both of you pushing the lantern into the air with all the others.
You were beaming brightly, your eyes focused on the lanterns above you, eyes shining with excitement.
Aizawa was focused on you, a soft expression on his face.
Reaching out, he placed his palm on the side of your face, and you turned your gaze to him.
You guys had been dating for a while, sure, but you had never actually had your first kiss, Aizawa wasn’t one for PDA, he didn’t know how to fully express his feelings for you, and he knew that you were letting him decide to make the first move.
And that’s what he was doing.
He leant down, capturing you in a gentle but unsure kiss, and you immediately responded.
Closing your eyes, you placed your hands on his shoulder, giving him the confidence he needed to deepen the kiss.
When he pulled away, he grinned a small grin of pride, and you smiled at him.
“Not so scary is it?”
“Shut up.”
You laughed at him, knowing he wasn’t being rude, he was just feeling awkward, and you moved your hands to cradle his face, pulling him down so you could kiss his forehead and you let him go.
“It was perfect Shota.”
He nodded his head in agreement, and leant down to kiss you again, only to stop, resting his forehead on yours with a heavy sigh when there was a squeal of excitement.
Lifting his head up, he stepped away from you, turning around and he pointed at the gathering of teenagers.
“Don’t you know it’s weird to follow your teacher?!” He yelled.
“I can’t believe you just kissed Razor!” A pink haired girl squealed.
You laughed a little, patting your boyfriend on the back a few times.
“Get out of here you lurkers!” He snapped.
The laughed, running away and you laughed as he turned to look at you, sighing softly, leaning down to kiss your forehead.
“It’s not fun here anymore…” he grumbled.
You snickered, gesturing for him to take your hand and he did.
“Let’s go home then.”
He nodded, happily following after you

A theory about Merv
I have a theory about Mervyn Pumpkinhead.  I’d say it’s a headcanon but it’s more a theory.
Tumblr media
According to the tale of Stingy Jack (the origin of the jack-o-Lantern) we carve Jack-o-lanterns to drive away old Jack and other wandering ghosts.  The Jack-o-lantern is a protection ward against supernatural threats from entering your home. One superstition has it that if you blow out the Jack-o-lantern before midnight on Halloween you invite evil spirits to enter your home for the entire year.  It’s only safe to blow it out after midnight. Another superstition is if you let the Jack-o-lantern burn out naturally you invite good luck for the entire year and have warded your home against evil for the full year.  It is especially good luck if it manages to burn until after sunrise. In The House with a clock in its walls Pumpkin Jack-o-lanterns are used as protection wards all year long. Jack-o-lanterns, at their heart, are symbols of protection.  Now, because we see Mervyn as a Mervyn Turniphead in The Sandman story The Tempest, it’s very clear that his Jack-o-lantern head isn’t just for the aesthetic. In his Turnip form, that is an old school Irish Jack-o-lantern.  That is a pre-Halloween decoration (use for any time of year) Protection symbol against supernatural threats.
Tumblr media
So even in present day when Mervyn has a modern Pumpkin Jack-o-lantern head, Mervyn is a walking, talking, protection ward against supernatural threats.  He’s not just the groundskeeper or janitor.  He’s a line of defense.   This does explain why Mervyn stands up to The Furies (The Kindly Ones) the way he does.
And this is also one of the many reasons I, myself, love Jack-o-lanterns.  They aren’t just symbols of Halloween. They are kind of comforting in their protective light.

hello pissa nation, i'm here to declare that i'm actually in charge of canon now and this is what happens ty xo
CROSS POSTED TO AO3
Missa comes back to grab his backpack he left and finds Phil in the kitchen.
It’s an accident– he would’ve thought at this time of night the other would be asleep, but he’s wrong. The light hadn’t even been on. Phil had just been sitting in the dark, and Missa had shrieked long and loud when he’d flipped on the lanterns and found him perched on a stool staring at nothing in the dark.
Once he’s recovered from his heart attack, Missa has at least enough decorum to cough and ask: “Why are you awake?”
“Why are you here?” Phil immediately fires back, and that’s when Missa clocks into the fact something is very, very wrong.
Philza looks like a mess. His hair is loose and limp, framing a face that looks gaunter than Missa remembers it being. The eyebags he’s sporting are truly impressive. His wrists look strangely thin where they lie on the countertop, fingers clasped in a knot of knuckles. Phil looks like he hasn’t eaten or slept well in weeks. The tone of voice he uses with Missa is all wrong, edges and sharp angles and accusing words.
“I left– my bag,” Missa says. He shuffles to the side where he had dropped it earlier and forgotten it before dipping and getting distracted by the capybaras. “The last of my things.”
“The last?” Phil asks, and it’s like the last piece of twine holding him together snaps. “So you’re gone, then. For good.”
“Not from the island,” Missa says. “Just– I’m useless, I know you don’t want me here, it’s not like I’m doing anything for you.” Plus whenever I’m around you I go a little crazy stupid, he doesn’t say. He can only avoid Phil for so long– maybe this conversation was a while coming. “I haven’t lived here in a long time. And with Chayanne gone, I don’t see why–”
“Why you have to stay?” Phil asks, then laughs. It’s grating, abrasive. Missa winces.
“He’s not here anymore,” he says. The reminders of Chayanne hurt. They hurt like nothing Missa’s ever felt before. The memories come flooding in unbidden, of warm mornings making breakfast in this very kitchen, wandering around the top of the wall. Chayanne is written into the cracks and corners of this house and that’s fine, but Missa knows he can’t stay here with Phil in the same way they’ve been for the past few months. Not without something changing.
“And so you leave,” Phil says, nodding. “Okay, cool. I see– I get it. It’s fine.”
“I mean…” Missa slings on his backpack. “Are you sure? You don’t look–”
“It’s fine,” Phil repeats. Missa is about ready to run, but something makes him linger and slow down, stepping back towards the door. But Phil doesn’t say anything, just stares at the mess of his own hands. Missa takes another step back, and another.
“Bye,” he offers softly. Phil doesn’t answer, and so after another agonizing moment of waiting, Missa turns. In the same second, his heart shatters.
And then–
"No, stop," Phil says, and Missa pauses in the doorway. The pieces of his heart record-scratch on their way to the floor, and slowly– very slowly– start to rewind back upwards. "I don't–"
When Missa looks back at him, Phil is breathing hard, like he's just run a long way. Neither of them move. The words come out next ragged and scratchy, torn out in fits and bursts between teeth. "I don't want you to leave. The house is– so quiet, with them gone."
It's cruel, but Missa doesn't say anything for a moment. Just lets the silence sit between them.
"I think I'm going crazy," Phil says next, clearly nearing desperation. “I keep finding things. Seeing things. I take pictures, but they disappear. I try to show someone, it’s gone. I’m being fucking messed with, Missa, and I can’t– I can’t do this anymore. I can’t be alone.”
“What changed?” Missa asks. He still hasn’t crossed the threshold yet, caught inside. He feels a little bit like a fly trying to escape a glue trap. Like there might be an inevitable conclusion despite his efforts.
“I don’t know,” Phil says, burying his face into his hands and letting out one long whoosh of air. “I don’t– I just can’t do it anymore.”
The glue constricts. Missa feels his throat tighten, his eyes smart. The backpack that had felt so secure on his shoulders just a minute ago loosens, and then slips to the floor. He sets it down gently, taking a few short, quiet steps to where Phil sits on the stool. He hesitates, but only for a moment– Phil is clearly putting himself out there right now. Missa thinks this might be the first time he's seen his husband so honest, so distraught, and it’s that which gives him courage to do the same. He reaches out and catches Phil’s elbow in his hand, the other one reaching up to draw one of Phil’s hands away from his face. He’s surprised to see tears silently falling down Phil’s cheeks, but neither of them say anything for another long second. Missa just holds his arm and Phil looks back.
“I love you,” Missa says. He says it slowly, purposefully. The translator won’t miss a word this time. “Do you know that?”
“Yeah,” Phil says. His fingers grip Missa’s hand, firm and unyielding.
“No, no,” Missa says. He doesn’t think Phil gets it. He changes his grip, makes it so he’s the one holding Phil for a change. “I love you. Do you get it?”
Phil nods imperceptibly, just the briefest shake of his head. “I know.”
“Then why don’t you say anything?”
“I’m not–” Phil stutters, stops, and then starts again. “I’m bad at…”
“Nothing,” Missa interrupts. He feels strangely calm, weirdly in control. This is a situation he can handle and Phil can’t. It’s not something they’ve run into together before. “You’re bad at nothing and good at everything, Philza. You are strong. It’s part of why I love you.”
Slowly, Phil leans forward. He inches closer until he’s collapsed almost entirely against Missa, his head resting on Missa’s shoulder and staining his jacket with tears. Missa doesn’t let go of his hand or his elbow, cradling him and supporting him as he goes nearly limp. There’s a hot brush of air against his upper arm as Phil says, “I need you.”
It’s a strange feeling, to know you’re needed by the one man on the server who doesn’t need anything, ever. The man who forgave you for running, who treated you with kindness you probably didn’t deserve, the man who has saved your life a hundred times over. The same man who killed a code monster and raised two kids without so much as complaining once needs Missa, the sad sack of an absentee dad who can barely hold a sword right.
I need you is as close as you can get to love with a man like that, Missa thinks. He’ll take it. He tightens his grip on Phil’s arm and kisses the side of his head ever so softly, pressing his nose to the top of his hair and inhaling.
“I won’t go,” he says. He feels the sob more than he hears it, the shuddering that wracks Phil’s whole body, and moves one hand to rub his back in gentle circles. He breathes and makes a promise: “I’ll stay.”

Imagine Luis hugging you closely as you two navigate through the darkness of Castle Salazar. But not just because he didn’t want to lose track of you…
Tumblr media
“Luis, what the hell are you doing?”
“One would think someone as intelligent as you would be able to tell when they’re being embraced. And by such a dashing man, I might add.”
You roll your eyes and proceed to bend your elbow back with swift force. Although you couldn’t see behind you, the contact with leather and the sound of him cursing in his native tongue was a sure satisfactory sign that you landed a perfect hit. He didn’t let go of you completely, but he did loosen his grip so that he wasn’t completely pressed against your behind. His closeness caused your cheeks to burn and you were thankful that it was dark.
The two of you found yourselves wandering warily inside the castle, having been forced to evade Saddler’s plaga-infected cultists once again. Their pursuit chased you inside a series of rooms devoid of light save for a few torches dimly lit with strange purple flames. As the torches were steadfastly stuck on the walls, it would have been difficult to navigate through the area without a reliable source of light on hand. Thankfully, on one of the side tables, you found a lantern already lit. This one burned a distinctive, eerie blue flame and like a moth, you were drawn to it, picking it up gingerly in your hand. It offered little in terms of illumination, but it was enough to help you get a grasp of your surroundings.
By then, your Spanish companion took it upon himself to attach his body to yours. His excuse, he didn’t want to lose you amidst the darkness despite the lantern offering enough light to allow some distance. He didn’t relent even as you shared this fact, creating the excuse that he didn’t want to take the chance especially as monsters could be lurking about anywhere and wanted to be ready to leap to your protection. While he had a point, if you had to guess, it was more likely that the notorious flirt just wanted to be close to you. For the moment, you let it go and moved on to lead you both through the abyss. Upon further inspection, you discovered that the two of you are in a library of sorts. One of many, as Luis candidly pointed out.
“And vastly interconnecting,” he added. In the darkness, his lips thinned into a pensive line before curving to that of delighted realization. “Actually, this place looks familiar. There should be a few hidden rooms somewhere around here. ¡Rápido! Look for a grandfather clock.”
He advises to act quickly yet the man still has his arms wrapped around your waist, restricting your movements. “You know, it’s hard to look for anything let alone move at the pace we’re going what with you holding onto me like this.”
“Hm?” The man hummed, intrigue rumbling in this throat. “How should I hold you, then?”
You scoff. This man is incorrigible. Yet as insufferable as Luis is most of the time, he is also undeniably charming. If you weren’t struggling to stay alive, you’d enjoy private moments like these with him.
As if reading your thoughts, he spoke up. “You know, if not for the certainty of danger lurking in quite literally every corner of this terrible place, this would be a rather romantic setting. Don’t you think?”
“What are you on about this time?”
“C’mon, just think.” The dark-haired man steps around to snake his arm around your shoulders and reposition his tall frame against your side. It was easier to walk this way for certain, but now you can see each other’s faces. You hope he can’t see how flushed your cheeks are. “You, me, and a single candle light. All that’s missing is fine dining with some wine and this would make a most promising night worth remembering.”
“I have a feeling that this whole journey is going to be memorable whether we like it or not,” you sigh. “So what, then? Like a date?”
Luis shrugs, “If that is what you would like it to be.”
Why can’t this guy ever be straight with you? As flirty and playful as he can be with his teasing, there are far too few instances where you can tell he’s being genuine. This is not one of those instances. And over such an intimate topic. You decided to bite the bullet and prod further.
“What would you want it to be, Luis?”
He pauses, clearly not expecting you to turn it around on him. The man twists his head to look into your eyes thoughtfully, the blue flame reflecting off his brilliant silver hues. There was a glint in his gaze that bordered on something hopeful and you wondered if you returned it. As if in doing so, it would drive from him the answer you wanted him to say. However, his lips didn’t move and although the words danced upon the tip of your tongue, you bit them back out of pride. Luis catches how your jaw moved when you clenched your teeth and opened his mouth to break the silence.
Clank!
You both freeze in place.
“What’s that sound?”
“No se-”
Clunk! Shhft!
That sounded alarmingly close. You flash the lantern towards one of the countless bookshelves and through the thin openings, you see movement on the other side. Its figure is hard to discern but the way that the light reflects off its body, you deduce that they are covered in some type of metal armor. You and Luis aren’t alone anymore. Luis squeezes your shoulder and when you turn to face him, he had his pointed finger pressed against his lips. Nodding, you two kept walking as quietly as possible while also keeping a low head and an eye on the mysterious figure walking about. It didn’t seem to notice you and you thought you were in the clear until you heard another set of heavy steel footsteps thumping on the side.
The steps grew faster towards you and out of panic, you flash the lantern that way to see what was coming. The light reveals an animated suit of armor running at you with a sword raised high. You were about to run for it until you felt a familiar hand upon your waist, keeping you in place. You struggled against Luis’ hold, stricken with horror. Just as you were about to scream at him to let you go, he takes a firm grasp of your hand that held the lantern and lifts both of your hands upward towards the armor. Your eyes flinch to a tight close, shoulders tense of what you assumed to be your impending doom…
But the steps have stopped, the limbs of the armor come to a screeching halt and you open your eyes to see this new, terrifying enemy completely stationary, as if frozen on the spot.
“Huh. That’s new.” Luis comments with intrigue evident in this voice. “A mutated variant capable of using non-organic hosts. Salazar has been busy.”
So many questions flooded into your mind but your anger took over your voice. You glare at him over your shoulder, miffed over how calm he is given that he nearly gave you a heart attack. “How about a little warning next time?”
Shhft! Shfft! Shhft!
That’s definitely not good. It sounded like you two are surrounded and while the castle is huge, the rooms in the library are packed tight with shelves and thin aisles. A step in the wrong direction would spell your end.
Luis speaks up, “I have an idea. Do you trust me?”
Did you have a choice? The man practically drags you by the arm, managing to sneak you both behind the cover of a book-filled aisle. The tall, thick volumes block the lantern’s light from the plagas’ view. Leading you both into a crouch, he guides you through the library. You could do nothing but follow, keeping a careful ear to the movement around you. After several careful turns, you enter another dark room and stop right before a grandfather clock. Luis takes the lantern from your hand and a rare, serious expression settles on his rugged features.
He whispers, “Stay here. I’ll be right back.”
“Wait, what are you-”
He dashes off before you can finish your sentence. How a man can move that fast and not make a sound is beyond your comprehension. Completely alert, you watch his retreating form go down what looked like a long corridor. In the darkness, only the light illuminated his shape, making him appear like a shadow. You couldn’t see what he was doing but before you could ponder further, the walls seemed to shift in the distance, consuming the light and leaving your sight with only the only void.
Panic fills you like insects crawling into your pounding heart. Terror pricks upon your spine in chilling shudders. What did Luis do? Where did Luis go? Did Luis leave you?
You thought about calling out to him but the familiar sound of steel-capped footfalls fills your ears. You back yourself into the wall, making yourself as small as possible and hold you breath, daring not to make a single sound. The armored plaga are so close, the sharp clangs of metal echo off the walls in rhythm of your blood pumping. You thought for certain that it was over when one dreadful step resounded against the floorboard right beside you but a harsh thud in the distance catches the attention of the overgrown parasites. The plaga rush towards the noise and you listen carefully for their footsteps to echo further in the distance before sighing softly in relief.
Believing it would be best not to linger in this spot longer than necessary, you were about to shift to a stand until something firm gripped onto your shoulder. You nearly gasped aloud in shock, but your mouth is covered by what felt like a warm hand.
“Calma, calma.”
Luis’ thick accent reaches your ears in a soft, soothing whisper and you immediately relax under his touch. Remembering yourself, you slap his hand away and admonish him through clenched teeth.
“Luis, what the hell?!”
“No time for questions. Follow me.”
You hear him shuffle before you, the lack of light making it very difficult to make out what he was doing. After a minute, you hear the soft click of a mechanism and the low dragging of something heavy scuffing against the wooden floor. The hand on your shoulder swiftly slides down to grip your arm and you’re once again dragged through the darkness. The rush of your pace was short lived as Luis lets go of you. His body heat retreats from you and you nearly reached out for him, but your hand stops midair when you hear him tinkering offside and the familiar mechanism shifts gears. He must have led you both to one of the hidden rooms he mentioned before and just closed the entrance behind you.
“There. We’re safe. For the time being,” the Spaniard says.
You take in some much needed breath at his words. Once you have completely relaxed and was certain that you were not in immediate danger, you steal a moment to absorb your new surroundings and come to a familiar conclusion- it was dark as hell!
As you were about to ask what the next part of Luis’ genius plan was now that you have successfully evaded your armored pursuers, a soft click echoes off the wooden walls. Your curious eyes catch a small flame burning a ways from you, the warm light casting a warm glow against a familiar figure. It was Luis. With a lighter in hand.
You blink. “Have you had that this entire time?”
The man was hunched over one of the lower shelves of a large bookcase, tossing aside several books over his shoulders without a care for the amount of noise he made with his rummaging.
“Hey, are you listening to me?” you said as you beelined to his side. “What are you doing now, Luis?”
He responds without looking at you, “Un momento. It should be… ¡Oye! Found it!”
His hand lifts from the recesses of the shelf, revealing a rectangular tin container.
You blink, “It’s a box.”
It was Luis’ turn to roll his eyes. “Not just any box. Suppressants. This should help our two American friends with their parasite problem.”
His words perk you up to attention immediately. “That’s great! We should tell Leon and Ashley right away.” Your hand moves towards the communicator you keep on your person. However, again, Luis’ voice stops you.
“Not yet.”
You quirk your brow at him inquisitively. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
The dark-haired man shakes his head. “Nada. Rest assured, we’ll break the good news. But first, ¿por qué no nos tomamos un descanso?”
He wants to take a break? When you uncovered such a critical find?
You countered, “You really think now is the time for a breather?”
He responds with a shrug, “Now would probably be the only time, my friend. This room is completely safe, I promise. And I have every intention of savoring the moment it has to offer. You’re free to join me.”
The finality in his words truly left you with no room to argue. And boy, did you want to argue. But the ache in your muscles begged for rest and truthfully, the idea grew more tempting by the second.
Eventually, you cave. “Five minutes. And we keep going.”
Luis grins, “I can work with that. Next time will be longer.”
With that, his lighter closes with another metal click, killing the only light in the room and effectively rendering your sense of sight useless once more. You didn’t realize he moved until you felt his warmth breath fanning against your face, your nostrils taking in his musk.
“And for the record,” his voice comes off low and deep. “Me encantaría salir contigo.”
Before you could ask him to repeat himself as you didn’t quite catch that last part, he silences you with his lips pressed against yours, warm hands returning to your waist and pulling you close.

Coming Home (Part 4)
Azriel x Reader
Part One | Part Two | Part Three
Hiiii! Thank you so much for all the love on this so far! I’m really enjoying writing it!
Here’s part 4…ANGSTANGSTANGST 💃🏻
Warnings: Nah.
It was late. Late enough that even the faelights had begun to wink out on their own. The words on the page before you were nothing but squiggles.
You should have dragged your feet home hours ago — as soon as you’d shut and locked the clinic door for the night. But the busy day had left you with a crowded mind, and you’d favoured some quiet reading time in the back room of the clinic over returning to the house.
And potentially having to encounter Elain.
Busy days had time sweeping by in almost a blur, and suddenly it was over a month since your return. It was nice to be back in the swing of things — to heal, and to feel helpful and productive — and to truly become reacquainted with the life you’d walked away from. The homecoming ball Rhys and Mor were planning — that seemed to snowball with extravagance every time you received an update — was fast approaching. You were excited. Life was good.
But Elain…Elain made you…uncomfortable.
It didn’t take a genius to recognise that she had no interest in you, try as you might to engage her in conversation. Living under the same roof as her had become a tentative performance of tiptoeing around her, of enduring her painfully short responses to your questions and the troubled glances you sometimes caught her shooting you. Not to mention having to watch her come alive beautifully whenever Azriel came around, and they took long, pleasant walks around the garden together.
You could only assume that she’d picked up on your history with Az. Or worse — that he’d confided in her about it at some point. The thought made you die a little inside.
The decorating of your own house was coming along nicely. The sooner you could move out, have your own space, the better. But until then, you’d been lingering later and later at the clinic as the nights swept by.
You rubbed your eyes, shutting the large, battered tome about medicinal herbs, and pushed out from your chair. It was late enough, now, that Elain would probably have retired to bed, and you wouldn’t have to have an awkward run-in with her in the hallway.
It was as you were gathering your things together, packing your satchel, that you heard it — a soft rapping on the clinic’s front door. You frowned, glancing at the clock, and then grabbed the lantern of dimming faelight from your desk, striding through to the front.
The imposing figure you could just make out behind the glass could only be one person — the shadows coiling around him a telltale sign. You laid the lantern down on the counter and hurried to unlock the door.
“Az?” You blinked, taking in the still, stunning sight of him. His hair seemed to be windswept, his cheeks tinged slightly pink and the smell of cold air clinging to him. “Are you alright?”
He grimaced, holding up one of his scarred hands. The sight of his blood had you starting towards him. “Ash arrow.” He explained. “I pulled it out, but…I think there are still some splinters in there that need digging out.”
That would explain why the wound hadn’t already healed itself, then. You gently took his hand in your own, using every bit of your focus on not trembling at the way his touch both cooled and heated you. You winced at the wound, glancing up to meet his gaze.
“Come through to the back.” You said. “I’ll get those splinters out.”
The grateful smile that tugged at his lips had you faltering on the spot for a split second, the breath almost knocked out of you. Only when you realised you were staring did you clear your throat, turning and pulling him with you. You didn’t let go of his hand, even with his blood staining your own palm.
Your back room was just large enough to fit the two of you in, as well as the table in the centre, and the cupboards along the wall that housed your supplies. Strings of dried herbs hung from the ceiling, crisscrossing over your heads and releasing a potent mix of different scents into the air. Azriel took the room in slowly like he’d never seen it before, and the breathtaking sight of his quiet observation almost had you stumbling.
You turned away from him — mostly to hide your blush — and nodded to the table. “You can take a seat. Sorry that the chair isn’t very…wing-friendly.”
Just a soft chuckle was his response, and you heard the scraping of the chair being pulled out as you gathered your supplies, used your magic to brighten the faelight, and took your own seat beside him.
The position was…intimate. His legs knocked yours gently as you sat down.
“Let me see.” You murmured softly, and he placed his hand on the table, palm facing up. You studied the gash in his skin, slowly manipulating his long, rough fingers. “Do I even want to know why someone fired an ash arrow at you?”
“I was investigating a supposed threat near to the wall.” He responded, close enough that his breath fanned your face. “I suppose I got too close to a mortal estate and they considered me a threat. I didn’t see the arrow until it was lodged in my hand.”
You frowned to yourself. It was unlike Azriel to be so…unaware. It always seemed that his shadows whispered to him about peoples’ decisions before they’d even made them. So unusual for anyone to catch him off guard. Unless he was distracted by something.
Still, you weren’t there to interrogate him — just to patch up his hand. You set about cleaning the wound, praying to the Mother that he didn’t notice the way your fingers shook. It was only as you began to dig the splinters out that a thought occurred to you.
“How did you know I’d still be here?” You asked, your gaze trained intently on his hand. “At the clinic. It’s late…”
In your periphery, you could just make out the way his perfect face molded into a frown. “I don’t know…” He admitted. “I just…did.”
Strange, you thought — but you didn’t push it. It was the first time you and Azriel had been alone together since the night of your return, and you simply enjoyed being in his calm, quiet presence, neither of you feeling like you had to fill the silence. For a while, it was just the gentle plink, plink, plink of the retrieved splinters that you dropped into a bowl, and the measured sounds of Az’s breathing that would hitch every now and then when you tugged a particularly large, nasty splinter out. You were well aware of him watching you, the concentration on your face. It was almost too much…too close. Your cheeks were on fire.
It was somewhat of a relief when the last splinter was out, and you were able to draw back just slightly. You lathered a thin layer of a healing salve across the wound that was already beginning to stitch itself back together, and you reached for a roll of bandages.
“It’ll probably be completely healed by the time you get home, but…wrapping it will give the salve a chance to do its thing.” You smiled gently, his calluses brushing against you as you wrapped a bandage around his palm and secured it in place.
He dipped his chin. “Thank you.”
Gods, he was beautiful. Too beautiful. It set your insides alight in every delicious, possible way. With your faces so close, all you had to do was lean in a few inches more to feel his lips, just like you had on Starfall—
You quickly jerked yourself away, silently reprimanding yourself as you gathered up your things and began to clean up. Azriel didn’t move from the chair. You could feel his gaze tracking your every movement as you tried to shake your reckless thoughts from your mind.
A moment later, he cleared his throat — pointedly. An announcement of sorts.
“We, uh…” He sounded…uncomfortable. Out of his depth. He continued to watch you. “We need to talk about something, Y/N.”
Just like that, you froze, anticipation coiling in your gut.
You’d hoped, what with a decent amount of time having passed since you’d returned, that Az had simply decided to brush your awkward past beneath the carpet, to pretend it didn’t exist. But as you slowly turned, pressing your back against a counter, every flicker in his gaze told you that such a hope was useless.
His eyes met yours, deep and intense and smouldering. The sharp cut of his jaw moved as he shifted in his seat. Whether it was from the uncomfortable position of his wings, or the uncomfortable subject lingering in the air, you weren’t sure.
“…You left.” He said quietly. His voice was a deep tenor that had a chill skittering over your skin. “You left without saying goodbye.”
Your eyes dipped to the floor. “Yes. I did.”
“Why.”
You sighed softly to yourself. Every part of you — every tense muscle and limb and area of your skin felt too hot. You didn’t like this — facing your problems head on. You’d had the luxury of running away from this, of not having to talk about it.
But what really could you have expected from coming home? The past never did stay in the past.
And you weren’t sure you even wanted it to.
“I was…embarrassed.” You admitted quietly.
A soft noise sounded in Azriel’s throat, one you couldn’t put a name to. “You just…left. One day you were there, and everything was fine, and the next thing any of us knew, Rhys was fretting and saying that you’d suddenly decided that you wanted to travel, to see the world, and you were gone.”
Fine. Everything had not been fine. The thought almost made you laugh. But you tamped down that thought, closing your eyes just long enough to take a deep breath.
“I’m sorry…” You said. “I didn’t mean to just…take off like that. I was scared that the longer I hung around, the more I’d lose my nerve.”
You were met with a silence so heavy, so potent, that you had no choice but to glance up and study Azriel’s face — to see if anything could be read on him. His jaw was set firmly, and his eyes burned with intensity as he stared at you.
“Was it because of…of Starfall?” He eventually asked.
And there it was — the giant fucking elephant in the room. You fought the urge to cringe, to run away and hide. This clearly wasn’t going to go away on its own.
So you shrugged. Tried to seem nonchalant. “I guess it was — partly.”
Az’s soft sigh was a caress on your skin. “You should have just talked to me once you’d calmed down…once we’d had a bit of space. You knew you could talk to me. You didn’t have to go running off for a century just to avoid me.”
“It wasn’t just for that.” You could feel yourself getting defensive, sure your cheeks were burning scarlet. “I did want to travel, to see the world. But yes, part of it was about avoiding you…avoiding what I’d done. I was embarrassed, and ashamed, and—“
“You didn’t need to be any of those things.” He cut you off.
“How could I not be?”
“You were young. You’d been through a great deal of awful things…”
Just like that, your eyes shuttered.
So that was the game he’d decided to play — to pretend that your attempted kiss had just been a heat-of-the-moment mistake born of being young, of being traumatised, of being misguided.
Not of being in love.
The dismissal hurt almost as much as the original rejection.
“Azriel.” You said slowly, carefully. You pinched the bridge of your nose, trying to reign in your temper. “Don’t—don’t do that.”
“Y/N—“
“If you feel nothing for me, that’s fine.” It certainly didn’t feel fine. You hardened your gaze as you met his. “But don’t talk to me like a child. I wasn’t one then, and I’m not one now. I knew perfectly well what I was doing that night.”
Azriel stared back at you, his throat bobbing with a hard swallow. A muscle in his jaw ticked.
“No, you’re not a child.” He agreed, pushing out from his chair. He was a vision of night as he stood up, towering over you once more. “You weren’t then, either.”
You nodded, trying not to tremble as he came closer.
“But you are Rhys’s sister.” His voice was deep, guttural — feral. Like he was trying to tamp down his own anger. “And you respect your brother as much as I do. So — for that reason, what you did that Starfall night? Don’t ever try anything like that again.”
His tone was dangerous enough that you knew it was a command — and a hard, solid rejection. It stung, almost enough for the backs of your eyes to prick with tears that you willed away.
You looked up abruptly, forcing anger onto your face in the hopes that it would mask your hurt. Azriel was already passing you in great, purposed strides, full of tension and ire.
“Thank you for patching up my hand.” He said gruffly. “I’ll see you at the party.”
Just like that, he was a whisper of movement as he left the clinic, just the slamming of the door and the chiming of the bell the remaining evidence that he’d been there at all.
You sagged against the counter, your cheeks and eyes burning, stinging. You wanted to scream, to cry, to — something.
Mor’s efforts to make you up for the night of the party would be painfully pointless. Any hope that had ignited in you about that was snuffed out.
As you bit down on your tears and cleaned your things away, Azriel’s deep, hurtful words rang loudly in your head.
“What you did that Starfall night? Don’t ever try anything like that again.”

・———— ・ ✦୨୧✦ ・———— ・
There was two things Bi-Han hated: waiting and not being informed on what was happening in his home, he hated the latter more as he was the Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, he was supposed to know what was going on.
Bi-Han paced back and forth in the main sitting room of his quarters waiting for news. Hands behind his back, his eyebrows were knitted together, his lips formed into scowl which were bigger than usual. Every few minutes He stopped pacing, looked up at the clock on the wall then resumed pacing near the bedroom door. Being one the biggest rooms in the Lin Kuei temple, His quarters were large and spacious. Fitting for their Grandmaster to retire after fulling their duties to the clan. The room was flooded with lanterns and candles illuminated the room after the sun set long ago.
On one of the sofa in the room sat Kuai Liang and Tomas. Silently they watched their older brother pacing near the door to his bedroom. They were also worried and anxious about any news but hid it better than Bi-Han; Kuai-Laing was the first to speak up.
“Brother, I know you’re worried, but we need to be patient what can’t do anything right now but wait.”
Bi-Han stopped pacing and looked at his brother with a bit of annoyance “Of course I know that it’s just frustrating I can’t even be in there with her due to tradition.” He growled.
Kuai-Liang was not offended by his brother’s outburst, he and Tomas were long use of their brother’s impatience, but they knew this time that impatience was out of concern.
The birth to his child was happening and couldn’t be in the room to see.
After rushing to return home after getting the news, he was told he could not enter his own bedroom where you were. He wanted to be by your side, but tradition forbids it. Normally Bi-Han was the first to support following tradition in the clan, but this moment made him think not all traditions needed to continue.
Just then they heard a loud moan of pain was heard from the closed doors that broke his concentration, you have been in labor for hours and every hour that passed was torture for you. Hearing your pain was enough to hear and Bi-Han quickly walked back to his quarters to be with you tradition be dammed.
Bi-Han burst through the doors; he saw a few servants near the bed they all turned to see where the loud noise came from. They all felt his cold aura filling the room none of them spoked, fearing the anger from their leader.
Until one of them a familiar face, stepped forward.
“Grandmaster you know it forbidden for you to be here during this time.” Madam Bo spoke firmly.
“I came to see my wife and soon my child.” With a slightly annoyed voice.
Madam Bo stood her ground and Bi-Han couldn’t help but admired her stubbornness.
“I know you’re worried about your wife and child but they’re in my good hands. I have helped deliver many babies even helped your mother deliver you and your brother.”
She stepped close to Bi-Han meeting the man eye to eye. “Plus, it doesn’t help your wife when you come in bursting in making all that noise and bringing in that freezing air.” She gave the Cryomancer a sympathetic hand on his shoulder.
“Trust me I have it covered, you can see her before you leave.” She gestured towards the bed.
Bi-Han walked to the bed where you were sitting. Your hair soaked with sweat, face red. Breathing hard you reached out your hand, and he grabbed it instantly. You were so happy to see him at your side. You were overcome with emotion and just let it all out, how you were scared, afraid you might lose the baby, lose your life, or both. He reassured you would be okay as much as you wanted him to stay, he had to leave. Before leaving their bedroom, He gave your hand a squeeze one more time before exiting.
He returned to the sitting room and resumed his routine of pacing.  While pacing he thought back to the day you told him you, he had an heir.
・———— ・ ✦୨୧✦ ・———— ・
Bi-Han had just finished training for the day when you found him and told him the news. He stood in silence for a few seconds not reacting; he then pulled you in a tight embrace and kissed your forehead. Inside he was excited you were pregnant with his child; he was going to have an heir. Someone to follow his footsteps and one day received the title Grandmaster like he had with his father, keeping the Lin Kuei bloodline growing strong for another generation.
The first months passed you noticed how Bi-Han changed. He was more attentive to you, bringing your food and tea in bed, being with you during your visits to clan’s medic, and on presenting small gifts. You never saw this side of him before and thought it was sweet and but towards the end of your pregnancy, you started to feel smothered. He began assigning guards to you, limiting your visits outside the temple and finally not letting you do your previous duties around the clan. He explained that the changes was just for safety so you reluctantly agreed but kept your frustrations to yourself.
The breaking point was an incident near one of the Lin Kuei borders; a report of unknown intruders put the temple on high alert, and you were rushed off to your quarters and locked inside in for hours. That was a bit much for your liking and after the incident was over with the help of Kuai Liang and Tomas, you asked Bi-Han to give you more space. You knew he was worried, but you reminded him you can take care of yourself. Bi-Han admit he acted too controlling and pull back on the changes.
Before your due date Bi-Han was summoned for an outside mission for the Fire God Lord Lui Kang.  A few months ago, He would’ve gladly take the mission anytime to show off his skills in Kombat but with you due soon Bi-Han wanted to be on temple grounds for the day, but as Grandmaster had to follow his duty to Lord Liu Kang and protect Earthrealm from any potential threats. On the evening of his departure, you said your goodbyes to Kuai Liang and Tomas and lastly your husband. You hugged him while He gave you a kiss on the forehead and laid a cool hand on your stomach.
“Please be careful and come back safely so you can meet our child.” You whispered.
“I promise I’ll be here when the time comes.” He gave you one more kiss this time he lingered a bit more then left the grounds of the Lin Kuei temple; you watch him disappeared as the giant temple doors closed behind him.
A week passed as you patiently waited for Bi-Han to return. To keep your mind, occupy you went about your days completing your duties around the clan. Which was harder than usual due to being heavily pregnant, but you didn’t want to be a burden.
On the day of the birth, it started off the same you completed your duties for the evening, you and a servant were walking to the dining hall for dinner. You mostly ate in your quarters, but it felt lonely without Bi-Han and wanted company while walking in the hallways suddenly you felt a sharp pain You keel over holding your lower stomach, when you felt something wet down your legs and realized your water broke.
It was time.
Quickly the servant helped you back into your bedroom then left to alert the midwife.
You sat on the edge of the bed keeping your breathing steady. You were in so much pain it was hard to concentrate. You really wish Bi-Han were here with you. A few minutes later the servant returned with the midwife you looked up in surprise to see Madam Bo with another midwife, and a few servants. She looked at you with concern and brushed your already sweat soaked hair from your eyes.
“Don’t worry, I know you’re scared but I promise you it will be okay.”
You smiled at her reassurance and felt a bit at ease until another contraction hit you this one more intense you grab the bedsheets tightly, squeezing your eyes shut you letting out a groan. You were told that contractions were painful but did not know how intense they were when the time came.
“Where’s Bi-Han?” you asked trembling after the contraction ended.
“He’s coming soon, they sent a messenger to alert the Grandmaster. But it will be a while before he arrives” Bo explained.
You were happy someone alerted him but still hated the fact it will take time but hoped he’ll arrive before the birth. The room became chaotic as more servants came in bringing towels, lanterns, and water. They then began to undress you and place you in a simple gown and lay on the bed doing their best to keep you comfortable. As evening slowly crept into night, the servants began lighting lanterns in the room. Hour after hour passed and you were in the worst pain you felt in your life, still no sign of Bi-Han returning.  As the contractions shortened Bo told you the time for pushing came close. You were relieved but still wanted Bi-Han with you.
You silently prayed he would return on time.
・———— ・ ✦୨୧✦ ・———— ・
Bi-Han was running a fast as he ever ran in his life, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest, His breath shallow coming out in a cool mist from his mask. His legs burning but he didn’t care, he had to return home as possible. Glancing over his shoulder he saw Kuai Laing and Tomas not far behind him. Not too long ago they completed their mission for Lui Kang earlier than expected. They caught their enemies by surprise close to the Lin Kuei border, saving them days of tracking. After providing Lui Kang with an update the God of Fire was satisfied and sent them back home, Bi-Han accepted and was glad to be returning home. The entire trek back he thought of nothing of you and the baby. With the mission ending early they can reach the Lin Kuei Temple by morning.
Treading back Bi-Han decided to stop and rest for a bit. After setting up camp Kuai Liang started a small fire. Once the fire was going his solders relaxed drinking water and taking warmth from the fire. Bi-Han away from everyone relaxed against a tree while observing the forest he notices a small shadow moving quickly and headed straight for them.
Bi-Han quickly stood up taking a defensive stance against the unknown intruder, there was no one else in the forest except Lin Kuei as the shadow approached, his guard was immediately dropped when he realizes it was a fellow Lin Kuei foot soldier.
The foot soldier approached Bi-Han and bowed quickly to his leader.
“What are doing here outside the temple without permission.” he said in a disapproving grunt.
“Apologies, Grandmaster but I came to give you an urgent message. Your wife is in labor you need to return to the temple right away.”
Bi-Han ’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, the time finally arrived.
“Kuai Liang, Tomas!!” he called.
His two brothers were relaxing by the fire when he called, they instantly came to his side.
“What’s going on?” Tomas asked first.
“We must return to the temple immediately Y/N is in labor.”
Both brothers “Understand brother but what about the others?” he said gesturing to the foot soldiers.
“Let them still rest and Have Cyrax take charge while we’re gone, he can manage it.”
“Will do brother.” Kuai Liang noodled he ran to tell Cyrax.
After Cyrax was notified, the three brothers quickly followed the messenger back home. Bi-Han in the lead outrunning the messenger. The only thing on his mind was you and the baby he prayed to the Elder Gods that you will be ok.
Finally Bi-Han saw the tall roofs of the Lin Kuei temple and the lights from the watch tower. They watchers in the tower alerted the ground that Bi-Han and the others were approached and open the gate. Bi-Han quickly entered through the giant gate doors and raced to the main quarters, as he entered his main chambers. but was stop by Madam Bo, hear Bi-Han entered and she informed Bi-Han that you were alright, and was about the start the delivery but he needed to wait out in the sitting room as he wasn’t allowed in the room.
“This is ridiculous as Grandmaster I demand to be in there!”
“Grandmaster or not I can’t let you come in during this difficult and stressful time. You will be able to see them in a soon just be patient.”
Before the Cryomancer could counter back, another midwife poked her head in the door alerting Madam Bo to return. The elderly lady hurried back in the room before he had a chance to speak again.
Bi-Han stood by the lock doors his anger brewing, he ran all the way back home then wasn’t allowed to his wife due to tradition. He could easily break down the doors but remember what Madam Bo said about stress, so he sat with his frustrations until they passed in the main sitting room. Tomas and Kuai Liang entered a few minutes later, after Bi-Han explain they both stayed with their older brother. Keeping him company while He grungily listened and waited patiently at the bedroom door.
・———— ・ ✦୨୧✦ ・———— ・
As Bi-Han was replaying the last hour in his mind your scream broke through his concentration one last time the room was dead silent all three men held their breath until they heard it: a small cry coming from the room. Kuai Liang and Tomas rose up from their seats and hurry to Bi-Han. They heard more noise from the room where Madman Bo exit out quickly, she walked up to Bi-Han then bow her head.
“Congratulations Grandmaster you have a healthy girl.”
“A girl.” Bi-Han thought. He has a daughter.
He was a father.
A look of relief was washed across his face.
“Thank you for your help,” he said with genuine gratitude in his voice.
“My pleasure Grandmaster you can go see them now.”
Bi-Han at last was able to enter his bedroom. As he entered the room, he saw one of the midwives holding his crying daughter over a tub of warm water cleaning her off. She was red from crying but appeared healthy, he then came over to you on the bed. You were still panting but now you also had a look of relief, and happiness across your face. Bi-Han leaned down and kissed your forehead.
“Well done wife, she’s perfect and will become a fine warrior.” Bi-Han said proudly.
You laughed. “Thank you, I’m so glad you made it.”
“I told you I would be back in time.”
Bi-Han watched the midwife carefully clean and swaddle your daughter never taking his eyes off her, remaining at your side he started to Brush the hair from your face.
Once finished the midwife brought the now quiet infant and gently place her in Bi-Han strong arms. He was surprised at how light she weighed. His hard eyes soften upon looking at her. Up close he observes she took after him. She had a full head of his dark hair and had his light brown eyes. Bi-Han couldn’t help himself and found the faintest smile gracing his normally stoic features.
You watched your husband holding your newborn daughter and you thought how gentle he was. His hands trained for combat and killing were now holding something soft and delicate.  You would hold onto the image forever. Bi-Han then left the room with her to show Kuai Ling and Tomas their new family member. While the servants began cleaning you up.
Both brothers still waiting by the doors when Bi-Han stepped out carrying the child. They stepped forward to look at their new niece. Tomas carefully touched her face while Kuai Laing placed a hand on his shoulder and gave his older brother a warm smile of approval.
“Congratulations brother, she’s beautiful. Father and Mother would be proud.”
After a quick wash change of clothes and sheets you were placed back in the bed which you happily obliged you finally had your daughter and husband together and was all you needed now. As she was packing up to leave Madman Bo informed you she would stop by in the morning to check on you. Giving you a final bow and left along with the staff while leaving Bi-Han returned with Kuai and Tomas not far behind. He sat on the edge of the bed giving you the baby to hold while your brothers-in-law gave you their congratulations and accepted them with a smile. After a few minutes of admiring and holding their niece Kuai and Tomas said their final congratulations and goodbyes for the night leaving the two of you alone.
As you laid back on the pillows, admired your child you felt the body growing tired, eyelids getting heavy, the need to sleep was creeping up in your body. The adrenaline was finally wearing off. You reached out and grabbed Bi-Han’s muscular bicep.
“I think it’s time for me to rest now.” You said gently.
He took your hand off his bicep and gave it a slight squeeze.
“Understood, take your rest now.” Bi-Han then took your daughter. “You can enjoy her in the morning with full strength.”
“Thank you.” You whispered and lay back and closed your eyes after a few minutes your body fell asleep after a grueling day. Bi-Han still on the edge of the bed watching your chest slowly rise and fall. He did not know why he watched but just wanted to make sure you were fine. He realizes too it was time to rest; he walked over to the bassinet and gingerly place his sleeping daughter in he then quietly walked over to the large chair by the window. Letting his body sink in the soft leather. He let out a large sigh releasing all the tension from the day and evening and feeling the muscles in his body unwind. He looked out the window and saw the first sign of dawn approaching, a small sliver of light was coming up in the east.  Today was truly a new day for him he thought and soon became the last person in the room to close their eyes and rest.
